espin - i have the kaddisfly cd... i'm not a huge fan of it - i mean it's good and all, but not quite what i'm into. do you have a copy of it?
and yup i might be attending The Used show... but i heard it was with alexisonfire? it really depends. now that we're getting done in the bum with shows, i actually have to be selective.
warped tour is one week tomorrow. that's soooo hella cool.
I think it's Alexisonfire, Underoath, and The Used. I'm going to skip that one, but I'm going to Kaddisfly tonight. I don't have their album, but they are playing with two other bands that I kinda want to check out and it should be cheap if it's the Collective too.
Actually, my band played The Zoo last Saturday and it went really well. We played with Uniporn and HMAO2. We are recording right now, but we'll still play a few shows here and there.

i go away for a few days and all goods things happen, NHL will be back, mosquitos are killed
You lucky bugger! Burnthe8track are awesome and I've seen Strung Out 5 times, but I'd kill to see A7X!

Just wanted to let you fellow Canadians I started up a Canadian BST forum. I'm hoping we can all save a few bucks by not paying the extra shipping and sometimes more for duties. We have a pretty good trading circle here in BC but sometimes you just can't find what you need. Trying to make that circle a little bigger! :D

DTK: I usually shop at CD Plus Madison square where they have "The Cellar". The prices are good and lots of used CDs too. They have a whole section of the building that's all Punk, Metal, Thrash, Grind, Psychobilly, Alternative, and Hardcore. It's right beside Hooters at Polo Park. A&B sound is good too, a lot of mid-level and indie bands for sale at 12.99 - 14.99.
I buy a lot of music online too from Suburban Home Distro, Hopeless, Asian Man, Fat Wreck, Smallman, Eyeball, etc. Suburban Home sells a lot of stuff on ebay and shipping is cheap. Hopeless has the best Webstore with sales and shipping to Canada is cheap. All of these labels usually throw in extra CDs, posters, stickers, and a bunch of free schwag when you order.
The best way to do it is to buy the CDs at shows, then I know that I'm helping the band get food, drugs, booze, gas, or laundry money for a long tour!:D

back from the good charlotte show. not half bad. but us old school fans were a little slighted - the played one song off of their first cd and said "good to see some of you own the first album - we really appreciate all the support.. yadda yadda" (as we actually managed to carry the song ourselves - the handful of us anyway), but ONLY played the one song. the *****ers.
all in all though - they did have a pretty decent live show. i was impressed. just wished for some other songs.
for some reason my messed up nose started bleeding in the middle of the floor crowd ("the pit" isn't appropriate for this concert) - easy do it yourself fixing? i somehow figured this out *right* before it started bleeding (musta been the subconscious working on me) - kicked off the sneaker real quick and pulled off my sock.
i'm thinking about mailing GC my bloody sock and demanding more songs from the first album next time around. i don't know how they could say no to that.
ps. love the Peg City reppin in the update today - DTK posts 1st, Senk wins the contest. good job boys.

GAMAX1001

I say anywhere but the CT parking lot.
You need to play in a enclosed area like the Burton Cummings Community Centre where there is a rink. Otherwise, you waste a lot of energy chasing the ball and slows the flow of the game.

They are still making the Han Trooper, Wookie and Shock Trooper.
Announced formally at the San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) last weekend though the rumour has been out there for a couple of weeks. Why? According to Hasbro the line doesn't sell well and it's too expensive to produce. I concur it doesn't sell well (only when the pegs are clogged with figures that were re-released unnecessarily) but I don't buy the expensive bit for a second. My main rationale for that is a comparison between McFarlane figures (be they movie maniacs, sportspicks or whatever) that are basically the same scale, very similar in detail, sculpt, paint apps, etc. and both have standardized packaging. Yet McFarlane's US retail price is 50% less than Hasbro's for a similar product. But I'm just a collector so I don't know anything about business and Occam's Razor has nothing to do with it.
As for links: Though I'm not the biggest fan of Rebelscum (http://www.rebelscum.com/article.asp?i=93815) this adequately covers it. At least the intent. They canned the 8" line, are introducing a 2" line that will tank. There's all manner of Star Wars miniature out there already done adequately well. No one wants this. Hasbro's just dumb, that's all.

I still dont like the Chewie for whatever reason. I kinda wished they made a better one of him. One of the only ones that I still want to get for my collection is the Emperor, Anakin with 2 sabers and possibly Jango Fett. All the other characters just are too blah for my tastes. Of course if enough of an uproar is made they may reconsidder somewhere down the line. It's not as if they cannot go back an start up the line again if the demand definitely is there. All I can say is that this is the only line of SW figs I've been excited about. I doubt I will get anything from the new/last series. I'm still tempted to buy a Grievous...

Picked up the Masters of the Universe "10 Best" DVD set. I can't believe He-man is on DVD! I though it pretty much died with Filmation in the 80's. SWEET! I was the biggest MOTU fan...ever.
Also grabbed the At The Drive in CD/DVD "This Station is Non-operational". I though there would be more to the DVD, but the greatest hits/anthology disc is totally essential for any fan of music.
Also saw "The Island" last night. It was awesome! It's a high concept and the movie really demands that you invest yourself in a farfetched plot, but Ewen Macgregor and the jaw dropping action really pay off. The freeway scene is the best "car wreck" scene I've ever watched. T3 and Matrix 2 had good freeway scenes, but this was totally nuts! Go check out "The Island", it's worth the price for a summer movie. It's better than "War of the Worlds" easily.
Oh, and in other news, I'm hooked on SW Unleashed. Damn you Astrodave and Gary!:D

They need to do heavy aerial fogging. This is friggin ridiculous. it's a heck of a lot more efficient than sending trucks out to spray only certain corners of the city while others get neglected. Some forget those areas pay tax dollars too. Plus the bonus is anti foggers can't block a plane

Our city needs to take a lesson from Grand Forks. Apparently just south of us they fog about 8 times over the summer, and they use trucks and plane dusting. They also use a chemical that's one notch down from the chemical we use (I guess that's why they fog several times), and nobody complains or requests no fogging.
I'd like my tax dollars spent on more fogging, please.

Hi Espin,
I sent you a PM
The city needs to fog again or it is going to be bad. May be the health minister for the province will put out another fogging order. Let's hope.

Yeah, what's not to like about poison getting sprayed over the entire city.

They've been doing it for years and no one that I know of has gotten sick or died. Hey if it makes the outdoors more bearable then I say go for it. The summer's too short to have to put up with the skeeters.

This isn't directly aimed at you Brad, just in response to your comment in general.
What's not to like? Well, that all depends on how your knowledge of toxicology is. The basic premise of all toxicological notions is that the dose makes the poison. What does that mean?
Sit down one night with a buddy. Get a bottle of tequila. Pour yourself 1 oz. Give the rest of the bottle to your buddy. You consume your 1 oz, get your buddy to drink his 25 oz in a minute or two. Then sit back and watch what happens. See any difference? That's the difference in exposure rates. Drink enough tequila and you'll die. Drink enough malathion and you'll die. Is malathion worse than tequila? Only if you're drinking it. The exposure from Ultra Low Volume (ULV) spraying is so minimal it's barely measurable. Unless you're sucking the back of the sprayer, you're just fine.
Do you drink? Do you smoke? Do you eat salt? Tell me what's worse for you: salt or the pesticide Roundup? Now tell me why.
You'll forgive me if this gets me fired up but there's just so much horrible misinformation going on out there. Taz is not doing a horrible job, but people aren't letting him do his job. This is not to say he's not got faults (dragonflies have not been released by the city folks and don't do anything to control mosquitoes in the numbers we've seen) but let him do his job. Spraying malathion (adulticiding) is just part of an integrated pest management program. They are not excluded. But the risk to people from spraying malathion? Nada unless your azz is dumb enough to get behind a truck while it's spraying - that's called acute poisoning.
It's a wet year, we're bound to have mosquitoes and tons of them, regardless of what Taz or Randy Gadawski or anyone else does. Mitigating that population for comfort and to reduce disease risk (a real risk, not some phantom toxicological risk) is not a bad thing.
And yeah, if you want I'll print you out the REAL scientific material regarding pesticide and human health risks. It's from peer reviewed scientific journals, not some circle jerking group of activists that wouldn't know science if it fell on it's head.

Actually, no. Aerial fogging over a large residential area doesn't work very well at all. The turbulence from the movement of the aircraft alone causes all manner of whacky distribution of the spray. Much of the spray drifts at the altitude they need to fly at and doesn't come remotely close to it's target. If you really, REALLY want proof I'll pull up the data from the early 1980's when they did DC-3 spraying to help control Western Equine Encephalitis. Lots of hit and miss crap going on there. Putting planes up in the air makes people happy, but does little to address the problem.
Crop dusting or aerial application of pesticides to crops works because of the difference in the size of the aircraft (smaller) and the distance above the crop the plane flies while distributing the pesticide (5-10 feet above the crop versus a bare minimum of 100 feet above the city).
The trucks, while inefficient in some respects, are a much better distribution system for hitting the targeted areas. Unfortunately there are not enough to cover the large geographic area the size of Winnipeg in a short time period. Winds and continued hatches of mosquitoes means the mosquito population rebounds fairly quickly. That's the point behind continued larviciding of water bodies. Fogging gets the adults so they can't lay more eggs; larviciding gets the juvenile stages so they don't hatch into adults.

Fogging or not, I think we can all agree that something needs to be done so we can enjoy the outdoors a little more during our short summers. What ever happened to the chemical bars in standing water that would last about 160 days? I distinctly recall our mayor talking about them as a solution to the mosquito problem if he were elected.
Gary, thus far I haven't pursued organizing something for this coming weekend.

I think there's been a fair bit of miscommunication about the effectiveness of methoprene (or Altosid by trade name). Lots of people, our good mayor included, believed some of the hype around methoprene. It is a juvenile hormone mimic in insects meaning they can't moult from one growth stage to the next. (BTW, it also affects the good bugs like dragonflies). Early "reports" on methoprene were that it lasts a long time (ergo the 160 day number). Unfortunately that seems to have been some eco-hype as much as anything else. It turns out it's more like the Bti (the other biological agent) they used to and still do use.
Specifically the residual effect of methoprene is around 21 days or so. That's better than the Bti at around 2-3 days before needing reapplication. Unfortunately neither of those were near as good as chlorypyrifos, an organophosphate insecticide, that gave close to a month of control. But none of those give that really long control so you need constant reapplication. Altosid is more expensive than Bti and both of those are a lot more expensive than chlorpyrifos.
The early season control we had here was due to application of larvicides and a lack of hot weather. When it gets really hot, mosquito populations increase exponentially in a short period of time. No one seems to remember, but May and most of June were cool. Mosquitoes in cooler temperatures take longer to go through a generation, upwards of 2-3 weeks. When the really nice heat hit in late June/early July, that generation time went down to about a week from egg to biting adult.
Think of it this way - each female mosquito needs a blood meal to produce eggs. They can produce multiple batches of eggs, so long as they aren't killed, but for easy numbers let's say each female produces 100 eggs. So...
1 female = 100 eggs - temperature about 20 C --> 3 weeks to develop to adults so for each female in that temperature range you get 100 offspring in three weeks.
At higher temperatures 1 female = 100 eggs, but at 30 C generation time is 1 week. So 1 female --> 100 eggs --> 100 females x100eggs = 10,000 females --> 1,000,000 eggs in three weeks. That's why our population of mosquitoes went boom.
The city can only treat so many standing bodies of water with larvicides. Obviously in a year like this when you can't take a step without a puddle falling underfoot the City cannot treat them all, add some heat and we're screwed. It's not really the switch to biological control that hurt it, nothing would have worked especially well. Hot weather + clay bottom, flat ground + mosquitoes + standing water = unhappy winnipeggers. Oh well.
Don't believe political promises. Don't believe non-scientists talking about science. The media is so very full of crap and tends to distort just about anything they get their hands on.
Anyway, when's the next football series due (before or after Team Canada) and who's in it?

I have the ultimate solution. We jack up the city so water drains down away from it. Drill holes strategically outside of the city so it drains out to lake Winnipeg! That'll show em!

Actually, the crop dusting thing is kinda what I imagined it would be I wasn't expecting them to fly high and drop a gas bomb hoping it would envelop the city. Is that what they actually mean my Aerial fogging? If so that would be rather stupid as you had pointed out. I just assumed it would be similar to a crop dust method since it looks to be the most effective way to cover a lot of ground in a limited amount of time at night.
