brief scanning shows that there is some kind of fogging debate going on...

i vote for wearing bugspray... i just don't know how long we can keep spraying crap in the air. but that's an uniformed opinion - but spraying and spraying and spraying doesn't make me think that in 50 years it'll be ok... sorta selfish to do it right now. but i see the immediate gratification.

minneapolis is fun (i'm in the lobby waiting for info on how to get to the damn zoo). the freeway is nuts though...

warped was good. i have the oddest sunburn (apparently i didn't get under my neck). and dropped like $200 on merch and cds - Espin, check out Paramore (purevolume maybe?) the leader singer is a chick and i was blown away. she looks like she's 17, and about 5 foot nothin - reminds me of STOY.

anyhoo - i think the front desk has survived the "i overbooked the kingrooms" dilemma and will be alive to get me my info.

ciao mates.

does anyone find Morgburg's in-depth knowledge of all these chemicals a little conspicuous? you got a lab at your place
Nope, no lab there. But I do know some people with one. Odd folks they are.

As to my knowledge, for a change I'm actually talking about something I know a little about. It doesn't change me from being an opinionated *****, but for once I have something to back me up. I am employed as an entomologist and have a couple of degrees in bugs (with a minor in toxicology) so I'm moderately comfortable discussing the crap.

Actually, the crop dusting thing is kinda what I imagined it would be I wasn't expecting them to fly high and drop a gas bomb hoping it would envelop the city. Is that what they actually mean my Aerial fogging? If so that would be rather stupid as you had pointed out. I just assumed it would be similar to a crop dust method since it looks to be the most effective way to cover a lot of ground in a limited amount of time at night.
Yeah, aerial spraying would employ fairly large aircraft (probably DC-3) at a fair height because of safety restrictions. Grand Forks does it, but they fly a little lower for the most part there (not sure why, different rules for aircraft?) and they rely on ground based spraying as well - easier in a smaller town. But I think they've done ground based spraying 11 times this year and aerial only once.

i vote for wearing bugspray... i just don't know how long we can keep spraying crap in the air. but that's an uniformed opinion - but spraying and spraying and spraying doesn't make me think that in 50 years it'll be ok... sorta selfish to do it right now. but i see the immediate gratification.
Not an invalid point at all. If all the City did was rely entirely upon spraying it would be pretty pointless. But they try as best they can to use larviciding with biologically based products (mostly) to control the mosquitoes before they get to the biting stage. It's just in extreme cases such as the extremely high rainfall we've had here that they resort to spraying. If next year's dry, you're unlikely to see the sprayers out.

No one here probably knows (or really cares) but malathion was introduced in 1950, so we actually have 55 years experience with it. That pretty much amounts to a generation. Use patterns have changed dramatically since the time in which it was introduced and we are much, much more cautious than we were at that time (anyone see the X-Files episode with people in an empty swimming pool being sprayed with DDT for delousing?) and tend only to use prescribed rates and in the case of malathion within the City, only ultra low volumes. When talking chronic doses (i.e. what might give you cancer) the dose still makes the poison. There are those that would suggest otherwise, but when you adjust for age, cancer rates are pretty darn stable or even declining (only really climbing in terms of lung cancer). You have to adjust for age because there are indeed more absolute cancer cases, both because of an increase in population and because older people tend to get more cancer. This is not to say there are not absolutely tragic cases of young men and women or children getting cancer, they do. Unfortunately there is seldom a "cause" for this other than crappy genetics and misfiring genes.

With respect to the 50 years spraying, you'd be looking most importantly at the mosquitoes developing resistance to the spray over time. In general I think the city does a decent job and to some degree this spraying is politically motivated because of the uncertainties of West Nile Virus. At some point in the not too distant future we'll have a much better handle on it. Much better minds than mine have suggested it will settle out like Western Equine Encephalitis. How many of you guys are familiar with it? Not too many and no reason you should be, it's a pretty minor concern. The same will probably occur with West Nile as the majority of the population becomes exposed and develops antibodies or some other type of autoimmune defense.

I happen to be of the opinion that the City sprayed way too much last year. Numbers were low, very low. This year when trap counts exceeded 10,000 in Headingly (sp?), that's almost beyond a nuisance threat. I have a buddy with an autistic child. When his kid gets repeated bites, outside of restraining the kid physically, the kid will scratch until he bleeds, often badly enough to require medical treatment. The point is just that there are other reasons to spray when mosquito numbers are extreme, West Nile just makes a more sensible justification. And before anyone asks, yeah, the autistic kid has on long clothes, wears repellent, etc. Still gets bites though, whether they're on his body or head.

have the ultimate solution. We jack up the city so water drains down away from it. Drill holes strategically outside of the city so it drains out to lake Winnipeg! That'll show em!

I know you're joking, but in technical terms this is called drainage remediation. When the media gets folks from say Edmonton or Ottawa to comment on the Winnipeg mosquito situation this is always what they suggest. They also merrily point out that they don't ever fog. Two points:
1. Drainage remediation in Ottawa/Edmonton is possible because of some odd geography called hills. We don't have anywhere for the water to go, outside of the above suggestion which isn't all that practical. Other, hillier cities can do that and do it well. We have no changes in topography and a largely clay bottom soil (drains like crap)
2. Because of said drainage remediation, there is seldom, if ever, a need to spray because trap counts rarely exceed 25 per night. Ottawa HAS sprayed in the last 10 years (adulticided/fogged) but they were under 100 mosquitoes per trap when they did it. We didn't spray this year until around 600/trap/night, roughly where Randy Gadawski used to draw the line as well. Bluntly put people that live in other cities couldn't handle it here because they're *******.

DR.Morgbug thanks for the valuable info. I'm going to sit down in my backyard the next time they spray(I hope they do), and i'll let you guys know if I get sick or grow a tail.

I know you're joking (or hope so) but I wouldn't recommend that. To call malathion a poison is indeed accurate. Everyone out there is crapping over chronic (long term) exposure of which my opinion is that there is very little risk, particularly if you don't go outside within an hour of the spray being in the air. To sit outside while the spray comes by is to risk acute (short term) exposure, something bluntly called poisoning. It is still highly doubtful that you would be affected, but it could happen and that's just no fun at all. Certainly not worth the risk.

It forever boggles my mind that the anti-fogging folks go out and confront actively spraying trucks. It makes me extremely angry that these people drag their children out there with them, exposing them and using them as perceived weapons against the trucks. To me that's nothing more than child abuse. There is no good or sensible reason to involve children in active protest with poison in the air, regardless of the dose. It's just plain stupidity. They should get their protests done at the Yard site before the trucks leave or through political channels. They don't win their protests because they are short on science and long on lies and half truths. We all have opinions, the debate has to be won or lost based on facts. In this case the facts are science and that doesn't include crap you or the Sierra Club makes up or distorts.

Anyway, I'll leave it at that:o

Not much coming out that interests me in terms of sportspicks. Might pick up a red TC Brodeur, want both Orrs, maybe a Cherry (anyone think there'll be a Cherry chase piece in a different jacket?). Nothing from football interests me though.

Just to add, Edmonton never fogs because there is no need to fog. It's far dryer in that part of the country, and any standing water will quickly be absorbed by the ground. The mosquito season in Edmonton is about 3 weeks long.

The down side to this is that if you have eczema and you live in Edmonton, it'll flare up because of the dryness.

Here is my position on the mosquitos although none of you probably care:

Like it or not, there are always going to be mosquitos in Winnipeg in the summer. When it rains like it has this spring and summer, there are going to be increased concentrations of mosquitos. I don't understand why everone is going crazy about them and the risk for West Nile. It's not that much of a risk for the vast majority of people. I admit that the moquitos have been bad the last couple of weeks, but they won't stay that bad. They will peak and naturally decrease. There are way to avoid getting bit.

I am totally in favour or larviciding and the other non-spraying means of controlling the mosquitos that the city is pursuing. I don't see spraying as being that effective and mosquitos are not the only things that get killed by it.

Obviously Brent knows more about this that everyone else on the thread put together, and I have a question for him: Do you let your daughter play outside in the yard the day after the trucks come through and spray your neighborhood? Just wondering.

I can't speak for Brent, but the day after spraying I saw a whole lot more people outside, including children playing outside on their lawns. They were virtually absent prior to the fogging. The day after the fogging started (in the parks), we had a barbecue at King's Park. There was one mosquito for the entire 2-2.5 hours that we were there. I have yet to see scores of dead birds or squirrels on my lawn, or anywhere else for that matter.

Even just 2 weeks of heavy mosquitoes is bad in my book. Anything that can be done to reduce them is great. Wearing long sleeved clothing and pants on hot humid days is something that I can do without. And staying indoors isn't an option when there's work to be done. I can't imagine that heavy usage of bug repellant can be all that healthy, and I hate the sticky feeling that accompanies it.

As far as west nile, just ask anyone who's had to go through it. I'll take my chances with malathion (the dosage concentration of which is harmless to the majority of people under normal circumstances, unless you're Glenda Whiteman) over the chance of getting west nile. Heck, I'd use it alone just to be relieved from nuisance mosquitoes.

Mostly absolutely true, but there was indeed a tremendously elevated risk of West Nile. What I said about it becoming minor is still speculative. Those speculating it are pretty bright and darn knowledgeable so I expect they will be proven right. But they might not be. The number of Culex tarsalis (not all mosquito species can transfer or carry the disease) that is about right now (and prior to spraying) is very nearly unprecedented in the history of the insect control branch. The numbers are extremely high as a proportion of the population.

With respect to the natural decline in the mosquito population, you are 100% correct. My position differs from yours largely on this basis though:
-We do not have a great handle on how West Nile operates in humans
-There is a very high population of Culex tarsalis around, that is the vector, there are also many more infected birds than anyone is letting the media know
-The risks from ULV malathion, unless you're stupid enough to run behind a truck, are negligible if they exist at all
-I'll happily agree that the residents of this city get way, way too worked up about it as well, but I do understand that the summer is exceedingly short and for guys like my buddy with the autistic child, there are other very serious issues at hand.

You are correct West Nile is largely not a risk for most people, aside from the elderly. However most of the rural cases in Manitoba involve fairly large, healthy men in their 30s and 40s. One guy out just east of Portage is taller than you Brad and quite fit. He's in his late forties, weighs about 225 and was laid out like a baby for over a month. The generalizations hold true except for the exceptions. That said, given he lives in a rural area, no amount of malathion would have prevented his contracting the virus.

I am totally in favour or larviciding and the other non-spraying means of controlling the mosquitos that the city is pursuing. I don't see spraying as being that effective and mosquitos are not the only things that get killed by it.

Let me ask you a question. If other things are getting killed, how can it be that mosquiotes are not being effectively killed? Do you see the conundrum? You're making the suggestion that we're spraying something that is selectively less effective against mosquitoes than non-target insects. It's not a direct suggestion, but the implication stands: we've been using a product that is selective for everything but mosquitoes.

With respect to non-target insects part of the reason for spraying at night is because the mosquitoes are out and active at night. During the day they primarily rest in the foliage (trees, grass, bushes) and spraying would be interfered with by physical barriers - those same trees, grass and bushes. Now here's another question: if those trees, grass and bushes afford mosquitoes protection from the spraying (adulticiding, malathion) why doesn't it afford some protection to the non-target insect species since they're using the same resting spaces, just at a different time of the day? You are correct, there are non-target effects, the point is just that they aren't quite as bad as some sides of the story would indicate. I'd have a hard time arguing that the dragonfly population didn't suffer some impact, but they were also about to start declining naturally given they'd about run their normal life span, just as you suggest happens with mosquito populations. I'll avoid going into why dragonflies as biological control organisms is a load of crap. For now.

I'll happily admit that the effects of spraying are transient and relatively short lived. In the absence of larviciding it would be utterly useless as the hatch would just continue regardless. But the effects are real. Many of the opponents cite literature from the old days when guys got paid for driving the truck regardless of how long it took - the less scrupulous guys could do it in 4 hours rather than 8 and be home sleeping while getting paid for 8 hours work. Nowadays they have GPS units in the trucks that monitor precisely where they went and how fast they were going. Efficacy is up considerably. How long does the control last? In my opinion somewhere between 3 and 10 days, depending on weather conditions, wind blowing in new mosquitoes and how effective the larviciding program is.

Obviously Brent knows more about this that everyone else on the thread put together, and I have a question for him: Do you let your daughter play outside in the yard the day after the trucks come through and spray your neighborhood? Just wondering.
The answer is yes, absolutely she was outside the next day. I put her toys away in the shed for the night and we were out the next morning. Why? With ULV there is so very, very little residue out there that the risks are largely phantom risks. Many of the safety considerations that are brought up are done so largely because of litigation avoidance, not toxicological reasons. Courts seldom use science as a basis, they rely more on the ability and charisma of the lawyers arguing a case.

Does anyone here use antibacterial soap? It's a pesticide, a bacteriacide specifically. How about something like lysol? Anyone smoke (did you know a goodly proportion of the folks out protesting do?) or drink? Those are real risks (not the soap;) ). Does anyone here treat young children (under 2 years of age ) with citronella? You're not supposed to, it's more hazardous to children under that age than is DEET? Curiously CROW doesn't talk about that too much, do they?

Ok, I'm a liar, I'm never done:o If anyone wants me to tee off on the whole dragonfly BS, just let me know;)

I really enjoy my friend group, but not enough of them are music fans, you know? I need to start recruiting "show buddies" for different music genres. Punk dude, Straight Edge Hardcore guy, Metalhead, New wave hip retro guy, etc...

That way when bands come to town I can always count on my "show buddy" to come along, drink a few beers, make light chat, peruse the merch, and watch the show.

As I get older (27) I'm finding more of my friends domestication included an aversion to loud music. I'll never conform! I'll go flippin' deaf first!:D

Gratzi - i'm way up for a hockey league. that's one i'd actually be ok putting in for a prize, i have a legit shot at knowing whats going on. i guess keeper would be fun (same team year to year?) but that's assuming we're around for the next 2 + years :) might not be necessary.

Espin - samuel l jackson? that's cool. i felt totally snubbed at work today when i realized someone else got a "project" (as they put it) which was essentially what my job is to do (as trainer). then i slept for like 4 hours, and had two seperate dreams where all these people from work either made fun of me or hated me or something. way harsh. lol needless to say i'm *so* excited about my shift tomorrow :D

thats true but for a reason.

1000 corpses was setup like a classic horror film from the point of view of the 'stereotypical' lost friends, but to the nth degree, and definitely messed up. devils rejects focuses on the bad guys, kind of a buddy road movie comedy whatever. but it also has more heart than the first movie

in terms of action (but not plot), comparing them is kind of like kill bill vol2 vs kill bill vol1. people expecting the same movie should always be disappointed imho (not directed at you moosefan :p)

man - foote to columbus... that's awesome. i feel so bad for starscream - but i'm a hockey fan at heart, and hold a softspot for the blue jackets. hopefully a good sign of things to come as parity spreads through the league.

foote was/is never going to get a SP, niedermayer, gonchar, aucoin, mcCabe, boumeester, redden, chara, souray and rafalski deserve it more than him IMO.

Also being on the Avs was not helping him with Aebi coming out in 10 and tanguay will probably made next and even another sakic before him

ShakesO

yeah - he could always swing for a custom. i love my custom sakic.

i like cheering for the smaller bastard teams. in all honesty my avs needed to be broken up - it was fun, and i'll still collect their stuff and hope for the best for them. but the teams that really excite me, the oilers, flames, canucks, canadiens... and the races with the kings and the other western teams.

the powerhouses just aren't my style. i really started following hockey with the avalanche because of Roy... but rooting for the little guy is alot more fun.

yeah kinda like i will never cheer for detroit, dallas, toronto, new jersey, or new york to win any series against any team. (i suppose toronto goes without saying - either your the number one fan, or you want them to burn)

you bite your tongue zoomer :)

it's still a fun movie to watch. a little more owen and vince - a little less will ferrel (that guy is starting to get to me).

but i guess it is a pretty safe date movie. nothing worse then a movie that sucks on a date.

time to cut down the cd collection... i always maintained that i wanted to hang on to most of my cds so that my kids could listen to random old stuff - but i'm thinking they are taking up too much space.

selling cds has probably got the worst return ever.

on the plus side, it's been awhile since i've thrown on my Bone Thugs cd :D:D (the classics have to stay)

dont get me wrong, i liked it, just a little more sappy than old school/dodgeball etc.

cause of the whole wedding angle. let's face it, the movie is about dating. lots of laughs tho. will ferrell gets better and better (to think i used to hate the guy  )

I still dont care for Will Ferrel too much. Anchorman was good. but aside from Jeaopardy skits, i didn't really care much for his brand of comedy. Vince Vaugh I've been enjoying, hating and enjoying again. Sometimes his characters just annoy the hell out of me. Loved him in Swingers, hated him in Made.

Oh the Family guy movie is pretty good btw.

Any of you seen Sideways? Did any of you who have seen it and have also seen Swingers think that Sideways was just a more sophisticated version of Swingers? I thought it was anyway. Great movie

Well it's nice to see that Calgary has joined the FA party. Amonte and McCarty in, however, Marty Gelinas is now a Panther. Gelinas has that weird tendency to play on teams that make it to the finals, foresight perhaps...oh question for flames fans, are Iginla and Kiprusoff signed yet?

Meanwhile, my Oilers have traded away Brad Isbister for a 4th round pick...yeesh, I hope Kevin Lowe is working overtime on something.

The best news tomorrow morning, would be a press conference announcing that George Laraque will be changing his jersey #27 to something else for the upcoming season...how good would Scott Niedermayer look in copper and blue?

Still need a number one centre, whose left?

Oh, and for the Stars fans, Modano has reportedly signed a 5-year deal with Dallas...looks likes his dogs won't be going hungry anytime soon!;)

GAMAX - hey, got your message but i wasn't sure how late i could call you. i'll call when i get home from work tomorrow.

goOilersgo - supposedly C town and Ed city are deep in the mix for neidermayer... not sure who's left for 1 forward... thornton maybe? keep in mind that there's also going to be another mad crop of FAs next season.. so blowing their load entire load this year isn't really necessary.

08-02-2005, 10:19 PM
I have mixed feelings about this free agency thing.

It's great that big teams like Detroit, Colorado, and NY won't get to go on spending sprees anymore, and it's great that teams like Calgary and Pittsburg will be in the running for more UFAs and RFAs, but it's a pain for teams like the Canucks. They drafted and traded for their core players BEFORE they were all big names, developed them, surrounded them with a cheap supporting cast, and now it looks like they might lose that core to free agency.

Well, I've heard that the NFL has been living with this for a few years.

:(

hmmm, I don't know how I feel about the Brewer/Pronger deal. Unless the Oilers felt that Brewer was going to walk after his contract was up I would rather have Brewer at this point in his career over Pronger at this point in his career. I guess no Oilers Brewer fig but the possibility for an Oilers Pronger repaint exists now...

I've had 3 people call me about credit card insurance, 1 person about carpet cleaning, 1 person about a school survey, and 1 person calling me about shampoo.

6 calls in an hour and a half. Does everyone just hang up(no time) or like me figure i should at least sit there and listen to their whole speech and say no thank you 5 times?

Anyways everyone have a good long weekend, i'm off to Edmonton tomorrow.

I was out of town on the weekend. Just getting caught up now.
You live in Charleswood, right? I am going to be out in that neighborhood

this year should be really exciting (for at least the first few months :) ) since everybody's getting all hyped about their teams and all the fa activity

Peca is a win too. York is another guy who has some bonifide skill, but I don't think he's got the true grit and tenacity to be a real winner. I would rather have a healthy Peca in the playoffs anyday. Now they need some speed to play with Hemsky.

Get Hejduk!
