10 bucks is no problem at all. I'd be game with almost any figure, but more than $20 each makes the pool more about money than the fun of a hockey pool.

ShakesO
08-25-2005, 07:51 PM
i think $10 is a solid number. gets you a decent prize without making the league all about money like cracker said :) sometimes being king of hill is cool - and king of the hill with a new jersey is pretty pimp too.

for the hockey league - can we add GAA or save % or something to the goalie stats? i don't think that wins and shutouts are enough - considering a goalie might have a strong team (ie. colorado last season in my pool) and it wouldn't matter about his own performance because the team was usually good enough to win if he had an off night. another stat or two might balance it out.

and maybe points for penalty minutes? helps make up for the often tarnished +/- "statistical" category.

just my 2 cents.

I gotta agree with you here Shakes. Having GAA and PIMS would really make the league interesting!

Yeah I'll add the goalie stats but I don't know how much I like the PIM's thing.

ShakesO
08-28-2005, 10:39 AM
i think the PIM just adds that wildcard factor in there... every pool i've ever been in has included the PIMs and i think it just adds some fun (it's always a good time when your guy scores himself a 10 minute major). :D

espin
08-28-2005, 10:46 AM
Yeah, PIMs is like a wildcard factor. I mean you could draft Kovalchuk and he could have a 3 goal night, but if you also had Thronton and he had a goal, two assists, 2 mins for cross checking, a 5 min major for fighting, and later a 10 min misconduct....now that's a big night!

ok you guys twisted my arm

Cool, It's always good to have a little bit of luck factor so that the league will have parity. Otherwise the people that end up with the best players after the draft will hang onto them. Or, If someone gets devastated with injuries, they can leverage PIMs into the factor when scouring the FAs to band-aid their team.

Oh, and when I win I'll take a Oilers Blue home jersey with 44 Pronger on the back...:p :D

I think a point for a save is "pointless".

I guy like Luongo with 40 shots against and a loss will end up with more pionts then Brodeur that gets a shut out and faces only 15-20 shots..Why should a goalie get a point for stopping a puck shot at him from the other end of the ice?(ie.penalty kill)
Just my opinion. I'd rather give a goalie 5 points for a assist and maybe 20 points for a goal. Something that is rare but does happen.

gratzi
08-28-2005, 06:34 PM
Well it can still be changed but I just added it for now to see what people thought. You can't do the GAA or Save%, and your ideas are good but you can add those either.

a point per save *is* a bit much... not sure how to adjust that to include some kind of save % thing.. must tinker i suppose.

but i think in the sense that we are likely to draft point getters - it's a little bit more fun when you've got a rough and tumble guy - get that gordie howe hat trick right?

it's all up for debate/vote. more people should weigh in on it.

i was just thinking though - we should have a date for collecting (probably before the draft) so that someone can't scrap out if they pull a bad team or something. not saying that anybody would - but it would negate any potential problems.. just a thought.

Be careful with the stats for goalies. We ran it last year with 2 points for a win, one for a tie, 5 for a shutout. Goalies ended up being the biggest point getters. I agree they're important, but not that much. Fortunately we had the league set up so you could only have one goalie in at a time.

Also not a fan of the PIM points, but I'll live by whatever. It's a great stat for guys like Thornton or Bertuzzi (pr1ck) but it can seriously overvalue some idiot like Domi or some other thug.

Want list should you guys actually be checking star wars while you're out there:
green commanders #33
red clone/shock trooper #6
blue guard #23

As for sportspicks, only thing I want/need is an LT chase from the Legends line.

You gotta do what you feel is real."
Ain't got no picture postcards ain't go no souvenirs
My baby she don't know me when I'm thinking about thoes years

Pale as a light bulb hanging on a wire
Sucking up to someone just stoke the fire
Picking out the highlights of the scenery
Saw a little cloud looked a little like me

I had My hand in the river
My feet back up on the banks
Looked up to the lord above and said hey man thanks
Some time I fell so good I gotta scream

*** extramarital flings don't count as adulteryWoman heading to court in Vancouver to challenge law By CYBELE SACK

Tuesday, August 30, 2005 Updated at 8:19 AM EDT

From Tuesday's Globe and Mail

Shelly Pickering thinks it is unfair that her husband's extramarital affair with a man doesn't legally count as adultery. So today, she's heading to court in Vancouver to challenge the law.

The 44-year-old Vancouver resident had been married nearly 17 years when, in October of 2004, she discovered her husband was having an affair with a younger man.

She and her husband separated immediately and she filed for divorce two months later, seeking an immediate end to their union.

Canada's Divorce Act allows for a no-fault divorce after a one-year separation, on grounds of marital breakdown.

It also allows for an immediate divorce if there is admitted or proven adultery or cruelty.

Ms. Pickering's ex-husband signed an affidavit on Jan. 5, 2005, acknowledging his adulterous relationship, and did not appear in court in February to contest the divorce.

But Justice Nicole Garson of the B.C. Supreme Court declined to order the immediate divorce, because the definition of adultery in common law does not include homosexual relations.

The judge also told Ms. Pickering that she would hear the case again if a lawyer would argue why the legal definition of adultery should be broadened to include same-sex adultery.

The traditional definition of adultery, which dates back to church-based courts in England, is "penetrative sexual contact between a man and a woman not married to each other and one of whom is married to someone else," notes Ms. Pickering's lawyer, barbara findlay (who spells her name in lower-case letters).

Ms. findlay argues that the definition of adultery is as outdated as the original common-law definition of marriage, which was based on procreation. Times have changed, along with the definition of marriage, and so too should the definition of adultery, she said.

"The grounds for divorce should be interpreted in a way which is consistent with the views of the Supreme Court of Canada about the purpose of marriage," she said, noting that the top court has deemed marriage to be the intimate union of two people, regardless of gender.

Ms. findlay suggests that the definition of adultery be amended to something along the lines of "intimate sexual contact between two people not married to each other and one of whom is married to someone else." She said such a definition is closer to what the public already considers to be adultery.

Ms. Pickering realizes that her divorce may not come any more quickly through this legal challenge than if she had simply waited the requisite one year and obtained a no-fault divorce. But she says she is doing it to help others who find themselves in the position she did.

"It's important to me to take back that bit of control," she said. "I feel like I haven't had any control [during the marriage] . . . I wasn't given the facts. . ."

While the Divorce Act falls under federal jurisdiction, it is administered provincially. The results of the Pickering case could set a precedent not only in British Columbia but in other provinces, Ms. findlay said. "If we win this case, I think it will be followed across the country."

Chris Girouard, a spokesman for the Justice Department, said the department does not know of other similar cases or decisions that have challenged the heterosexual definition of adultery. Judith Bowers, a B.C. lawyer who works for the Justice Department, will be present as an intervenor at today's hearing at the B.C. Supreme Court and will file a brief outlining their position to the court at that time.

Ms. findlay said she will also launch a constitutional challenge based on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, arguing that the definition of adultery discriminates against ***s and *******s by making divorce less accessible to them than to heterosexuals.

For the past two decades, Toronto psychotherapist Caryn Miller has devoted part of her practice to couples with one straight partner and one homosexual or ******* partner.

"The courts really have to catch up to protect the straight spouse in this situation and to legitimize the union of *** and ******* people," she said.

Ms. Miller said that homosexual or ******* infidelity is often labelled as something distinct from adultery by the *** spouse, but the effect can be no less devastating for the heterosexual spouse.

I'd suggest 2 points for a win, 1 for a shut out. In other leagues we've assigned 5 points per assist or goal for goalies, but yahoo doesn't allow that stat.

There's a pile of stats in there for goalies, but they must have been created by Americans. Number of shots and stuff like that aren't necessarily just a goalie stat. I remember when CuJo was averaging about 40 shots a game - crappy Blues D, not great goaltending, though not bad.

Goalie stats are:

Game Started, Wins, Losses, Goals Against, Shots Against, Saves and Shutouts. Right now I have it as 2 points for a win and 4 for a shutout, then the -1 for goals against.

I'm always up for variant figures. I love posting pictures of them loose to make the MOMC crowd a little nutty;) I have the following variants loose:

Doombot
Wolverine no mask (don't worry, it's from series VI)
Goliath
red Phoenix
Phasing Ghost Rider (thanks zoomer)
Green Hulk
scowling Bullseye

So missing a few obviously (would still like to get phasing vision, mohawk storm and blonde black widow) but I'm happy with either variant or regulars. I only get one of each figure, either one.
