Finally bought some skates this year! As you guys might remember, the woman and I bought some ice skates last year, but the next day the alternator blew on my car AND my fridge died. I had to return the skates to get money for repairs.

For X-Mas this year I got a bunch of Sportmart gift cards and we went and got skates today. I got some CCM Vectors and she got CCM Tacks. I swore that this was the year I would learn to skate and get my fat azz some exercise! Do you guys have any tips for a newbie?

howdy guys.. back from florida... slept for one hour in a span of like 38 hrs... oi.

tampa vs habs was good. wore my jets jersey (as did the g/f), and i think 12 people stopped us to comment. one was a former WHA player who "sucked" (by his own admission lol). we waited for autographs after the game - and sean burke chatted it up with the g/f mentioning that he loves winnipeg, etc. very nice guy. none of the lightning stars stopped... then again, they *did* lose.

new years in magic kingdom = the BIGGEST crowd i have ever seen in my life. i was actually in fear of being trampled... it was insane. i got all shifty eyed.

disney world goes something like this: when you're 8 years old, you don't notice the crowds or the waits in line. when you're 22, you *really* notice it all.

that said, i'm happy to be back - i've had no hockey exposure, looks like spezza has been hurt, alfie is out, and i have to get my head around who's hot and who's not... aie.

as a reference for how much football takes precedent in the usa - before the tampa/habs game, they were playing football on espn in the bathrooms in the arena... :rolleyes:

anyhoo.. i'm gotta go turn off this wwe crap that turned on after the finns/swede game and eat/clean/etc.

I started playing goal an oh-so-long time ago because no one ever wanted to play between the pipes. Then I started to like the feel of robbing players of goals. Of course, with my old age that seems to be occuring less and less these days.....:( :( :( ......

It's funny because I met up with Gary at Polo Park before Christmas and he showed me his new skates. Later I told my wife that I saw Gary at the mall with his new skates. Then she said, "Well, you're due for some new skates now, aren't you?" (She meant player skates). I said, "Sadly, no. Even though I bought them about 6 years ago, I can probably count on my fingers and toes the number of times I've been out as a player. At the rate I'm going, I won't need new skates for another 10 years. But GOAL skates, on the other hand....."

Anyway, I long for the good old days of rushing up and down the ice again.

There are quite a few first time/year players at the pick up game on Sat. Nights, so skill is not an issue.

If you don't play, you are never going to get better, I can't stand it when people make that excuse for themselves. (Here is another excuse i hear, "I'm not in shape, so I shouldn't play unitl I get into shape.") That's the reason why you are not in shape, but that person wants to make excuses to sit on their lazy A S S some more.

The guys who come out, come out for fun and exercise first and foremost. Scoring goals is secondary.

Equipment can be cheap, just don't get the high end stuff b/c we are not playing at the NHL level. Equipment from head-to-toe can run you about $200 to $300, not including skates.

Also, your equipment is like an investment, you can use for the next 5 to 10 years.
Trust me on that, I have some pretty old stuff.

Something to think about, also, Crashz, you live very close to the rink

Don't bother. Just call GAMAX and come out to Billy Mosienko on Saturday nights. He has a few guys there who, at first, really couldn't really skate or play hockey. But over the past few weeks and months, they got a lot better. One of them actually scored a couple of goals the last time we played.

The invitation is open to any of you guys who want to play ice hockey and have some fun and exercise.

We have a great group of guys who play a nice clean game of hockey. No slapshot and no hitting.

All I can say is that if you are worried about the skill level. Don't, b/c there are no NHL scouts out there.

Just come out and try it once, and if it is not for you, then you don't need to come out anymore. It's all good!!!!

Hockey Pants, unless that included in leggings.

If you really just want to try it out without buying everything.

This is what I suggest.

Pants
Shin pads
Jock
Socks
Gloves and Helmet.

There is no bodychecking, so the Shoulder pads and elbow pads can come later.

I had one guy come out and all her wore were Shin pads, Gloves and a Helmet.

elbow pads are a good idea if your just starting out, as they often tend to break your fall. Last time I was at walmart on regent they were blowing out their hockey stuff, pants reg $45-50 for $24, shinpads were under $20, they had pretty much everything and it was cheap.

Well boys,

I finally got a look at NHL 10 in Yorkton, SK. I case on the trolley cart at Zellers. My 3 year old is yelling "DAD, you can't do that" as I tore open the case. I set plus doubles of Iginla, thornton, Aebischer and Jage chase. Only took the Jagr because the goalies were squished. Now that I couldn't find them on my other stops I wish I had time to go back.

I like the notion of a Doan retro Jets, but I don't see us getting yet another figure unfortunately. If we do, perhaps a WHA Hull, but they'd have to redo the logo and it would have limited use. I'd put up with an incorrect Jets logo for Hull but I'm not sure TMP would want to bother with all the subsequent complaints. I do think it's a figure that should be made because he was essentially stolen away from the NHL, but we'll see what happens. It is a "Legendary" moment in the history of hockey, after all:p

Also I can't see a surprise figure from a team that has no player yet made. I can't see them ramping up a logo and getting team permission for a retro or surprise player alone.

I'd like to see a Doan for the sole purpose of getting both jersey combinations available for the Coyotes. I can live without the Jets retro for a White and/or Red Phoenix Doan.

Dale Hawerchuk is a hall of famer, so maybe we'll get lucky and see a Ducky in the old school Jets...

As for Oilers, I'd kill for a Stoll, Torres, Horcoff, Moreau, Peca, Pisani, etc.......but a Smyth 2 would be the best fiscal choice. Smytty really needs a better pose. Some sort of "parked in front of the net, limbs all over the place, big cut on my nose" pose would be good.

I have a feeling we are going to see Legace, but in my eyes neither Detroit goaltender deserves a sportspick right now. Maybe Lundqvist will take the Rangers deep into the playoffs and earn himself a fig...?

I think I did pretty good. I was out there for an hour and only fell once. I swore that I would learn to skate and God help me, I'm going to do it!!

I stayed pretty close to the boards for some balance, but once I learned to glide a little better, it was okay...

Yep, it was first time ever. Well, actually my dad bought me horrible used skates at a thrift store when I was 8 years old and I tried it once, hated it, and threw the skates out. They didn't fit and it was awful. No one in my family can skate, so I am determined to do it. I think I may sign up for those lessons....

i think it's hard to trade in our league because there's so many teams...

i mean, what's the point in swapping two half decent guys? if both have roughly the same point total...what would be the benefit in getting a new guy?

earlier on in the season i tried to swing a few trades... and zooms and i were sitting on bochenski for awhile...

the thing with the FAs is that a higher up team (say zoomer) might not have room for someone, drops him, and then a week or two later the player heats up again and someone else benefits. it could go either way. ie. i dropped gionta - and he's doing well now... mcgrattan was scrapping it up to start, and he earned me 2 pts in the last month (should've watched that closer).


by comparison if i had made dtk the trade of richards for carter, i'd probably be further ahead.

that and we have to balance our F, RW, LW, etc... it's not easy to make the trade :)

an even challenge - go up against someone to see who excercises the most over a period of thirty days for at least a half hour. you're gauranteed to lose some pounds that way - don't check the scale for two weeks, you'll see a big difference.

if you want to go up against yourself, put a dollar in for every day you exercise and buy yourself a hemsky card at the end of the month. or maybe i'll take you up on it - but i don't have anything to bet... i'm hella broke. bragging rights if anything.
