View Full Version : My own character : Misfit
Hey all, I decided to put up some of my pics of a character I made up named Misfit. I like to do shilloettes, like Frank Miller sort of. Also, like Frank, I deal with b/w only with ocassional color.
As you can see, Spawn was one of my inspirations. This pic is about a year and a half old. Yah, an oldy but a goody.

That is a cool design for your character. Do you think you could post him without the shadows covering his body. I would like to see what he really looks like. Keep up the good work. Hope to see a comic from you one day.

Some pretty nice imagery. Do you have a back story about Misfit? What's his origin and why the name Misfit?
Some pretty nice imagery. Do you have a back story about Misfit? What's his origin and why the name Misfit?
no1 knows where he came from. he just was one night spotted by a news chopper, perched on top of the tallest structure in the city: the pyramid. things then turned bad for him.
basically, he is guy that has decided to take pleasure in using his abilities for fun. he's ignorant, arrogant, and very well-witted even though he doesn't sound like it. his powers include flight, regeneration, and the ability to conjure. he can have a pistol in your face whenever he wants cuz he's had lots of time to practice on his own. he likes to wear a leather trenchcoat and mask to add to his fancy of roleplaying. i mean cmon, who doesnt read comic books?
as for his name, he hates it. it's a name he got stuck with after blowing up a building, but it wasn't his fault. "a misfit to society" they say.
as for where this takes place, the city's name is Dark City around the year 2130. one of the ten cities left on earth that hasn't been touched by war, BUT that doesn't mean that crime does not exist within it.
here are some pics that i have done over the span of a year and a half......

You could whip up a quick website with all your pages, kind of like a slideshow. Wouldn't be that tough, but you would need somewhere to host. I'd offer, but my host server is down.
ive never tried making a web site. is it hard? do you think you could give any pointers on how to make a cool web site and a also a way to put the pages(they range from 20-45) into presentation so that people can download them?

You could also go to imagecomics.com and get directions to submit it to the company. that's what im going to do with a character im working on called Black Ninja. it would probaly be a better real comic book, and thats what image comics will do if its good, and from what i have seen, i can't wait to buy it.

It's good but the first picture could BE spawn. Also, the names are somewhat cliched. Also, if you have these stories, do you use dialogue? Because if so then you'll need to change things like well-witted to quick-witted etc. I'm not trying to patronise and I realise you're probably using internet language, just in case though I'm trying to help.

this how you submit them
How to Submit to Image Comics
Image Comics accepts only PROPOSALS for new comic series (please read the numbered items below for what this means).
WE DO NOT ACCEPT writing (that is plots, scripts, whatever), inking, penciling, lettering, or coloring samples. Image publishes ONLY creator owned/creator generated properties (what this means is that we do not hire writers, artists, letterers, colorists and hook them up with one another REGARDLESS how "good" you might be--we do NOT have the facilities for this. If ALL you can do is write--or draw--we cannot help you. DO NOT send your script, your plot, your pencil sketches, your cover paintings, etc.)
A PROPOSAL should contain the following:
1.
A type-written cover letter with all contact information (name, e-mail address, address, phone and fax numbers) clearly printed on the TOP of the page. Introduce yourself. Please remember this is a job interview, politeness, professionalism, and spelling/punctuation count. We do not want to see your resume.
2.
A typed ONE PAGE synopsis of the over-all STORY. We DO NOT want a single-issue synopsis we want a synopsis of the entire series or story arc. As concisely and as succinctly as you are able, TELL US THE STORY, make us interested. Please avoid hyperbole – avoid questions as plot points ("what will Alex do when confronted with...?), etc. We are the PUBLISHER, not the audience--TELL US WHAT HAPPENS!
3.
Tell us whether you see it as a full color or a black and white book, a mini or on-going series, a Prestige book or an Original Graphic Novel. Explain why we (or anyone else) would be interested in this series. Tell us what sets it apart from other comics and who the target audience is ("Everyone" is NOT acceptable).
4.
8 1/2" x 11" photocopies of fully INKED and LETTERED pages DO NOT SEND ORIGINALS OR OVERSIZED PHOTOCOPIES OR PACKAGES. How much? Five fully inked and lettered pages are MINIMUM! If you have MORE than 5 finished pages, fine. Five is the minimum we want to see. We want to READ it! (We believe comics should be read).
5.
Color is OPTIONAL. If you have a colorist and can provide color pages -- great! This means you CAN send in colored pages you just don't HAVE to (although, if you want a color book, it would be advisable).
6.
A cover mock-up (this lets us know whether or not you understand the market and gives us a good barometer on your design sense). Do not put the Image "i" on your mock-up -- just give us your cover with a logo. NOTE: A good logo can be EASILY read from across the room. We DO make people change their logos OFTEN. Don't be "fancy"--be CLEAR.
DO NOT send character sketches/bios. DO NOT send script pages. DO NOT send pin-ups.
BECAUSE WE RECEIVE SUCH A HIGH VOLUME OF SUBMISSIONS, NO UNSOLICITED PROPOSALS/SUBMISSIONS WILL BE RETURNED. DO NOT INCLUDE A SELF-ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPE.
Please do not try to "impress" us with all the deals you've lined up or testimonials from your Aunt Matilda. We are only interested in the comic.
Please, DO NOT send it over the Net, send hardcopies ONLY to:

As for how many stories I'll come up with, I don't know. Misfit is still a baby working on his baby steps.

I've seen this thread for like a week or 2 now and I never bothered to open it up until today. I feel ashamed of myself. Anywayz, great pics and many great luck with your attempts of publishing it. I'd love to see the stories you do have for it tho. Not only will your art be appealing, but you need to have a good enough story behind it too.
Hey, I'll try to get to sending the first story to you today. (yu gotta change your avatar rofl)
Also!
I just recently (yesterday) come across a comic book character that shares so many similarities to Misfit it's almost scary. Deadpool. Any1 ever heard of Deadpool? He is a masked anti-hero that cuts as many wise-cracks as he can. What caught my eye was his mask. I thought Misfit's mask was a little plain and a little well . . . underexposed. So yah I come across Deadpool and I'm all "I like that!!!" Here's what I'm talkin about. I want Misfit's mask to look something like this. . .

Or you could just cut the "hello". It takes away intimidation factor.
Also, when it comes to Deadpool. If you are finding that Misfit shares a lot of similarities with Deadpool then I suggest you switch a few things up. Deadpool is a pretty well known character and it probably wouldn't go unnoticed. The way he looks now though is great, I would have never thought of Deadpool. Keep up the good work!

The character is all well and good, but I'm thinking that the name "Misfit" isn't working...
Villain: "OH NO! It's MISFIT!"
Misfit: "Yes...I don't fit in...prepare to die..."
It's just not clickin' to me.
And I agree with Human Animal, having Misfit in heavy shadows all the time isn't that interesting. It feels more like a crutch, like you don't really want to have to draw him for real.
Just my 0.02, though.

Wel, I am still in the beginning stages. I still gots a lot to work on.
As for his name, he hates being called that. In the stories, he hates being called it because it is a very corny name. It's a name the public gave him cuz he blew up a building. "misfit to society" they call him. but anyway, i like to stick with corny names.

why are you so concerned about it? maybe it doesn't even have a cover yet.
That last one's nice. Some parts of it are too soft (not sharp enough), I think. But it still has nice composition and I like the long frame it's in.

i love the style. your choice of images to layer is amazing. i tried reading through everyones stuff but they all seemed to say the same thing. great work. the only negative i could see is that some of the photos used in the backgrounds are sharper in contrast than the foreground images. i must admit tho. the city scape image made me look closer. good job. miller couldn't do that. he's pen and ink. you defn. have a unique style. try monochromatic instead of spot colors. greyscales too. just some ideas.
thx redhed :) Yah I really need to work on keeping the closer shapes sharper than the farther away backrounds. These are things I'm trying to work on before I go any further on making my stories.
Still working on the first ones. This si taking longer than I thought. Crap.
Oh, and as for a Misfit logo, I came up with something. It's pretty whimsical, but what do you guys think? What ideas do you have too?
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y38/mark84j/misfitlogo.jpg
p.s. : Things would be so much easier is som1 could give me a site or way to present these stories in some kind of presentation. Not Powerpoint hehe. Or maybe som1 could fill me in on how to make a web site of my own? Maybe a . . . free on? lol. I've had no experience at all making a site.

mr. lightning is really really close to being a big knock off of electro and maybe dr. light. just my thoughts on him, but he still looks sweet, as for misfit, is he like some punisher-ish kinda guy? his secret identity should be jared, that guy from subway, because he was a misfit whohahahaaaa...yeh, but sweet stuff, me likey.
as for misfit, is he like some punisher-ish kinda guy? his secret identity should be jared, that guy from subway, because he was a misfit whohahahaaaa
dude, what?
anywho, I've been really busy so I haven't had much time to work on anything Misfit realted. What I've been doing in my ridiculously thin spare time is working on some new styles, trying to open new doors, but also trying to stick with my shilloette style that I started out with. I am re-doing my Misfit stories. I want a new slate so . . . yah.
This is a pic that I would most likely start off with. The clouds were a holy bi.tch lemme tell ya. And thank God for the smudge tool.

man, i really want to read the story!!! please, please, please send me a copy!
Bad news people. Very bad news.
As you probrably know I just started school. Well, yesterday the worst ****ing thing that could happen to me . . .happened.
See I brought my hard drive to school with me. I was living in California and am now attending school in Mississippi. I couldn't leave it at home because there's just too much stuff on it to just leave behind. I also brought my laptop, cuz evry1 needs a laptop right?
So yesterday I wake up at 5am to go to baseball practice to do my runnning, lock everything up, and head out to the field. Well, at 8am when I get back, my door is open. Someone took a ****ing crowbar and jimmied open the door. My ****'s allover the floor, even my roomate's stuff(he's on the team too). My closet, which I lock up with a pretty big lock, was torn up. The door was practically lifted out of its hinges and propped onto the wall. My clothes were still there, but my laptop and hard drive were gone. GONE.
In the end my laptop, hard drive, DVDs, money, food card, and fan were taken. The hard drive really makes me furious. I have been investing so much time on my drawings that I feel like it's pointless to go back and start over. I had EVERYTHING on that hard drive. My music, family scans, and worst of all my Misfit work. It's all gone. My old stuff, my new stuff. All of it. What makes me even more pissed is that this is ****ing Mississippi. If the person that took my **** actually puts it into another machine, he's gonna just throw it away since I have it all password protected. And it's highly unlikely that he'll ever bring it back.
So. 5 years worth of drawings and scans. Gone. Misfit drawings. My pride and joy. Gone. All because some ******** piece of **** thought he could make some extra cash.
Now, I gotta start a completely new slate. I was already thinking about making a new PC, but now it seems unlikely.
I don't know what to do guys. I had so much stuff on it that I don't know if I could ever start over. I could never bring back all the ideas it had inside it. 5 years of my life are ****ing WASTED.
Man, life really knows how to kick you in the balls don't it?

Luckily, tho, not only are my stories saved on my cpu, but I print them all of and all in case something wrong happens to my cpu, and my bro has a copy of all my stuff on his computer in case something happens.
Here is the new pic I finished on Tuesday . . . in the library. I don't know if I'm 100% done with it though. It's suppost to be a huge explosion. I hope ya'll can see it. My main focus was trying to create the movement of the clouds, parting away into sort of a sphere-ish type way. Hope yu like it :)

Yes, stories do tend to be better produced when you start over. But thats only at times. Sometimes when you try to go for the EXACT same thing, it's gonna come back crappy, so go for something new and fresh, but you can still stick with the original theme and original plot of what you were going after.
yah, i'm gonna stick with the whole "mysterious, black figure" feel to it.
This is probrably what I'm going for....
There's talk of a mysterious, black figure that looms on the roofs of Old York.
I've decided to change the name of the city from Dark City to Old York. It's an entirely new city that has been built on top of what was left of New York, but they couldn't keep calling it New York so they called it Old York. New city yes, but still on the old New York.
Anyway, there are sightings of the black creature here and there, but most believe it to be a hoax/myth/whathaveyou. The internet geeks believe it to be real though! It's probrably a ghost or phantom, according to them.
News reports come in, explaining whether or not it's real or not . . . "probrably not" they say. But as the months go on and on, more sightings are reported, and they're all sounding the same. They all give very similar characteristics. "Blue eyes, black coat, very fast moving, and just flew away..." etc. This only fuels the idea of o buncha guys just starting up some nonsense.
But! Things get a little more serious when there is a sighting on top of the Pyramid, the tallest structure in the world, located in Old York. A news chopper catches the creature just sitting there by itself, looking up at the sky, zoning out. It captures some pretty reliable video of it flying away too, after it flips off the camera that is. This gets evry1 buzzed up and more confused.
There isn't a sighting in months after that, and people start to lose interest. "Had to have been a hoax."
But the public officials have established certain guards throughout the city. Men, droids, sensors, cameras. All that jazz.
When the facts come in that there is in fact someTHING that is scaling the city rooftops almost every night, some of them decide to take action and just kill the damn thing. See, just about every night it follows a certain route around the city. Starts here, then goes there, and ends up here...etc. They pretty much know when it's gonna show up at any spot.
One night they wait for it, and it shows up on schedule. This is where the real tussle begins. What they don't realize is that this things packs some heavy fire power as well, something they hadn't expected. It seemed to create the weapons it used with its hands, from thin air.
After a failed attempt, the city deciedes to comporomise this thing as an enemy, of course.
That's basically a vague outline of what would come outta this. It'd probrably be a mini series or whatvever. Don't know yet. Hows it sound so far?

OK I have a question though, even though you gave us the plot...what is the plot? I could see no plot in your plot summary.
Black figure jumps around
People talk about it
It jumps some more
Doesnt jump for a while
People stop caring
He jumps some more
City trys to destroy it
Fails
I just don't see what his hopping around the city on top of rooftops does...I mean is he doing it for excercise, or saving the day, or keeping the streets safe. I'm not trying to diss your story but could you be more clear please?
he does it to escape from his regular life, which is pretty much like any other. he is an anti-hero, he doesn't care about the people. thats about it.

Man, I'm really sorry about Misfit... I liked it very much. I have some pics from the thread on my PC and I love them very much. I don't have just the last 4- 5 mayby... Whell let the new comic you design be more cooler than the last and good luck for making it a real story that will go out in stores :)
good news and bad news all!
i went to T's house and it turns out he's one of my teammates best friends, wierd note: i've actually hung out with him one time. T said he had no idea that it was my room, cuz he just picked a random room. of course i was still a little upset, so were my teammates. all T did was spew out excuses of why he HAD to do it it blah blah blah yah right. while he was creating a spectacle of himself, i just wanted to know, "where the hell is my stuff?"
so he leads me to some room in the back and I see my laptop. I immediately pick it up and put it in my backpack. then it gets really silent for about 10 seconds.
"well? wheres the rest???"
he says "oh, right" and leads me into some other dudes room (he had roomates, but they werent home). but before i step inside, he says "now don't get pissed here aight?"
im all "why?"
he then points to the floor where my f.uckn PC is. But it wasn't what I was expecting. The damn machine was THRASHED! the side window was completely mangled, there were chunks of the motherboard lyin next to it, there were chewed up wires stickin out of it, it was a horrible moment for me. I just point at it and look at T and ask, "what the hell HAPPENED to it?"
turns out he wasn't exactly a computer wizz, but he did hook it up to a monitor a few days ago he said. he said that since my whole machine was password protected he didn't really have any use for it. and also, he wasn't familiar with computer hardware so his roommate took it upon himself to trash it, literally. i couldnt believe my f.ukn ears, this guys just casually telling me that he let his roomate demolish MY property that i invested so much time in.
i felt like hitting the guy, but he left the room. i walked over to my precious ex-PC, and began lookng inside because there was only ONE thing that was on my mind. the hard drive. but alas, it was completely destroyed. the insides were all cracked or broken in half. i seriously felt like my kid died or sumthing :p .
so i just sat on the floor of this s.hitty a.ss apartment in god.damn mississippi, 5 miles away from my dorm, 2,500 miles from my home in california, and just depressed. not as mad anymore, just depressed. All my stuff was gone.
so quite pathetically i continued looking inside. my insides started to feel a little better once i found a few vital pieces that were literally untouched. i opened up my backpack and put in my 1GB DDR RAM chip and my video card, my ATI 9800. Bout $300.00 resurfaced right there.
SO! once i went back into the main room, my teammates were standing in the doorway, but one of them was chewing T's *** out. T was just sittin on his couch like a thug, noddin his head. then T sees me and ask "yo dog, yu wanna beer?"
im all "NO I DONT WANT ANY F.UKN BEER!"
ok, i gotta let you guys in on a little sumthin about myself. im a nice guy. im TOLD im a nice guy all the time. but i wasn't very happy when i was walking out. when i got back to my car, i took out my teamate's baseball bat (we'd just finished practice earlier :) ). the guys were all "whoa whoa! what're you gonna do?", but i told em i wasn;t gona hit T, I was just gonna trash his tv or stereo or sumthin. haha so they all said "cool".
so yah i walk back inside with this bat right, and T gets up and his eyes are like basketballs. im all "you have any idea how much s.hit was on that PC?" T was probly pissin his pants.
so i said "well, you f.ucked up my s.hit, so now i get to f.uck up your s.hit. what'll it be?"
he said "aight aight. anything but the tv though, dog."
so naturally i hit the tv cuz it was like right next to me. T sees me hit in like 5 times, and says "man..." and sits back down on his couch. and then he says" man, how'm i gonna watch sunday ticket now?"
that made me laugh. i then walked out and drove my guys back to the dorm. was a fun day i guess.
that was 2 days ago.
OK so lets go over what I got back from T:
1. laptop
2. video card
3. DDR memory, well half of it.
so what does this mean? I gonna build a new machine, restart evrything from scratch, and try to make some Misfit stories. T can't pay me back cuz he a sorry a.ss broke moron. On this site I was tryin to sell my other DDR RAM chips, but I'm using those to add to my new PC. In about 2 weeks I'll be up and running again. kinda sucks to think that once i start it up, it'll be completely empty with no music or pics n everything, but eh. Good times.
edit: is it just me or are there just TOO many stick threads right now?

okay man, i know all the s hitty things that have happened to you, but here are the NEW subbmission guid lines for image comics.
_________________________________________________________________________
HOW TO SUBMIT TO IMAGE COMICS
Unlike many of our competitors, Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material! In other words--we want to publish YOUR comics--we aren't looking to have you work on books that WE dream up (at least, not generally, individual creators at Image may seek out collaborators but when you're submitting stuff to us at the home office, we expect it to be something original--not something utilizing existing Image characters). Image Comics accepts only PROPOSALS for new comic series or graphic novels or--whatever.
WE DO NOT ACCEPT writing (that is plots, scripts, whatever) samples! If you're an established pro, we might be able to find somebody willing to work with you but it would be nearly impossible for us to read through every script that might find its way our direction. Part of the way we're able to "thin the herd" is by forcing wannabe writers to find a willing accomplice. DO NOT SEND your script or your plot unaccompanied by art by a willing collaborator--it will be discarded, unread (and yeah, that's a bit harsh but it's the best we can do, folks).
WE DO ACCEPT inking, pencilling, lettering, or coloring samples. We'll keep them on file and hook you up with other top-flight creators when the occasion presents itself. Keep in mind, the books Image publishes are creator owned/creator generated properties and WE DON'T PAY PAGE RATES. It will be up to you to strike a deal with whomever you end up working with and we'll do our best to make it as painless as possible. Image takes a small, flat fee off the books we publish and the rest goes to that comic book's creative team. How that profit is split up is entirely up to the creators involved.
A PROPOSAL should contain the following:
1.
A typewritten cover letter with all contact information (name, e-mail address, address, phone and fax numbers) clearly printed on the TOP of the page. You don't need to ramble on or be flowery or tell us how much you love Image Comics--introduce yourself and get on with it. If you've had published work you could let us know about it but we don't need your résumé. We really don't care where you washed dishes and how long you worked at that record store. Presentation is not THAT important--a pretty binder is not going to make or break a proposal. We don't green light bad projects because they're in a nice binder--not do we reject a good project because it's not in a nice binder. Don't get all caught up in this crap. Sure, if printing colored material off of your computer at home looks like vomit on a tile floor on Sunday morning after a night of heavy drinking, by all means--get it printed elsewhere--we want to SEE how it might look on a printed page--but don't run out and get a $30 slipcase to put your stuff in. Make sure it's printed nicely, sure--but forget about the highfalutin’ packaging. If the pages look like ***--it WON'T get a green light.
2.
A typed, ONE PAGE, synopsis of the over-all STORY. We DO NOT want a single-issue synopsis--we want a synopsis of the ENTIRE series or story arc. As concisely and as succinctly as you are able, TELL US THE STORY--make us interested. Please avoid hyperbole--avoid questions as plot points ("what will Barney do when confronted with...?), etc. We are the PUBLISHER, not the audience--TELL US WHAT HAPPENS! Explain why we (or anyone else) would be interested in this series. KEEP IT SHORT! We get thousands of submissions--so do us a favor and cut to the chase. If you can sell us your book with a single paragraph--do it!
--You can tell us whether you see it as a full color or a black and white book, a mini or on-going series, a Prestige book or an Original Graphic Novel. There are times, however, when we may have a better idea what might fly so don't get married to any one format but we'd like to know what you have in mind. Tell us what sets it apart from other comics and who the target audience is ("Everyone" is NOT realistic--there's no single book on the market today that everybody buys).
3.
Send photocopies of fully INKED and LETTERED pages (any size). DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL ART! We'd like to see AT LEAST five pages that are fully inked and lettered. If you have MORE than five finished pages, swell! Bring 'em on! Five is the MINIMUM we want to see--not a maximum. We want to READ it. If the lettering sucks we may suggest a different letterer for the final comic book--the important thing here is that we can SEE that you know what you're doing--that you understand where to place copy and how to tell a story.
4.
Color is OPTIONAL. If you have a colorist and can provide color pages--great! This means you CAN send in colored pages you just don't HAVE to (although, if you want a color book, it would be advisable). We DO reserve the right to approve colorists as a poor one can ruin a decent book.
5.
Include a cover mock-up (this lets us know whether or not you understand the market and gives us a good barometer on your design sense). A good logo can be EASILY read from across the room. We DO make people change their logos OFTEN. Don't be fancy or artistic--be CLEAR. You can send character sketches and or bios--but not in lieu of storytelling pages--we still need to see five finished pages of sequential storytelling, lettered and inked. DO NOT send script pages--DO NOT send unlettered pages accompanied by a script and expect us to follow along--unless your stuff is mind-blowing--we won't make the effort to read it.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:
Things often change from proposal to the printed page. If the intended title of your book is awkward or unwieldy, we may suggest changing it. If your logo is an unreadable mess, we may suggest changing it. There are cases where we've designed logos and helped redesign characters and done cover sketches. We WON’T do anything without YOUR approval, of course, but it’s not uncommon for us to get pretty involved. Our ultimate goal is to sell a $#!+load of your comic book. If you succeed--we succeed. We'll do what we can to help.
The creative team in your pitch is the one we have expect to see actually working on your book. It is NOT okay to pitch a book and say it will be written by Alan Moore and drawn by Joe Madureira and then switch to another creative team. If the artist you pitch with walks--go back to the end of the line and start over. This also means that on all ongoing titles, we need to be made aware of and approve ALL changes in the creative team. It’s NOT okay to have six pages in issue #1 drawn by some hotshot while some guy off the street draws the rest of it.
DO NOT hand Image employees submissions at comic book conventions. We have enough stuff to haul around as it is. Your pitch is far MORE likely to get lost, misplaced or discarded if we get it at a show.
BECAUSE WE RECEIVE SUCH A HIGH VOLUME OF SUBMISSIONS, NO UNSOLICITED PROPOSALS/SUBMISSIONS WILL BE RETURNED WITHOUT A SELF-ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPE (and even then--it's unlikely). Again--DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL ART--EVER.
DO NOT try to pull a fast one! Don’t think that you can get away with saying that you had a book approved at a convention or that a previous publisher gave your book the go ahead. If your book is not up to snuff, you’re just making yourself look like a nincompoop. We’re NOT that dumb.
Please do not try to "impress" us with all the deals you've lined up or testimonials from your friends or family. We don't care that Stan Lee told you that your stuff looked "neat" when he was cornered in the Men's room--we are only interested in the comic itself. Your work sells your work--not praise from others. SHOW US why we should publish your stuff.
You CAN send it over the net or point us to a link--but jpegs are often misleading or difficult to see clearly. To get your project green lit we WILL NEED to see hardcopies. Send them to:

You have some talent there. I have a question, what tool in PS do you use when making the rain? Love the siluet work!
misfit84j
11-26-2005, 11:42 AM
For the rain:
1. Make a new layer and make it black.
2. Use the Noise filter so you get white dots with a black backround. (Make sure you have Gaussian and Monochromatic checked)
3. Then use the motion blur filter. Make it a slanted angle so that you get the rain look.
Do thise as many times until you are happy :)
But sometimes you can make it look a little bit better by making a new layer on top of all the rain, manually put some small white dots in random spots, and motion blur those too.
**also, as for sending Misfit1, I'll have to send them some other time because I'm in the process of packing all my stuff to go back to school. Thanksgiving break was just too qwik for me. But I won't forget to send it

I like the idea of submitting to image comics, it seems like they're a company that I might actually have a decent chance with. I think my character would fit in with a lot of the other characters, thanks to the "Differen viewpoint" idea.
I can't imagine her fitting in with Marvel or DC.
I'd feel kind of guilty though as I've only read Spawn and that was because I borrowed it... when I have money again I'll be sure to bolster, I really like Image and I think I'll pick up a Hellspawn or Savage Dragon trade if they exist.
Btw, I love the style of your drawings. It's visually appearling but looks like it only takes a couple of hours per page, which is nice and clever. I'm developing a very surreal style than I can draw very quickly.

Thank you for the rain lesson! I've always had a hard time creating rain in PS. Have tried a couple of times but nothing has ever turned out decent. Thank you. And I really like your style! Dark and the siluet work is amazing! It would be nice to maybe see your book in the stores in the future! Here's a link to some stuff I've made. It's been a while since I updated it though.

Right now I'm thinking about starting up a short story that shows Misfit's baby steps when learning to deal with his powers. In fact, it'll probly be before he's even called Misfit.

Hey everybody. I just wanna keep you posted on my future Misfit shenanigans.
As you probly know I play division1 baseball so that takes up a LOT of time. But I asure you that I am still doodling and stuff. I have a new story idea that will shed some light on Misfit b4 he was Misfit.
It will be the story of some kid that has kept something inside him ever since he was born, and has decided to play with it in a sense. But as he goes on his first "walk" he stumbles onto some trouble of course.
I want to portray Misit as a phantom figure. Maybe borderlining on the portrayal of Spawn and the Mothman. I think that part is important.
I dunno WHEN it'll be done, but I will keep at it whenever I can.

i'm really liking your art and style. and misfit is pretty badass as far as the anit-hero types go. just some constructive criticism, try to make your story more original instead of using plot points like, a kid has hidden powers and wants to use them, he gets in trouble. try and twist it to make it sound new and original, the story has a lot of potential though so keep up the good work and continue to work on those pics.

I just started reading over this board and this is awesome! Your work is phenomenal and the character is really tight!
Sorry to hear about your computer but thats happened to me before also and I've learned to make the best outta it because starting over from scratch sometimes allows you to improve your stories and your ideas. I have a story of my own that I'm working on but I havent done anything more to it than make character sketches and written a screenplay (I see it as a movie, but would like to storyboard it as a comic book for myself).
I guess you use Adobe Photoshop for your drawings and I plan to get the program to do some stuff for my work. Im not familiar with the program so if you could gimme pointers on how to do the crazy stuff you do on your drawings, that would be sweet.

Yah. I'm trying to find something that will make the story stand out. I'm tired of all the stereotypical new stuff that's coming out so I wanna make sure that my own character doesn't fall into that category.
The one thing that I hope to establish about Misfit is that he's not really an anti-"hero". See, he doesn't fight the "bad guys" to defend the people. He fights because he ALONE is threatened. He couldn't care less about the public. I'll try to make it more clear later.

I've used the pose in this picture b4. Thought maybe you'd recognize it? The sky I did using Bryce 5.5, and spriced it up with Photoshop.

Same sequence as the first one. Don't know how these will fit in, but I'll find something to tag these with :o
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y38/mark84j/walkway2-2.jpg
Okay this one is the one I'm gonna put in the Misfit story. Not the same ol trenchcoat flapopin kind of guy he's gonna be. I like this pose, and after checkin out a bunch of comics I own I think I got it down. Thought I would take the Frank Miller route and just keep it shilleoette-ish. As for the backround and foreground, I wawnna make Old York look like a real s.hitty area. Just dark dark dark. Wires hangin everywhere, always scattered rain, blah blah blah.

Isn't that supposed to be the mystery though? For the reader to try and figure out who exactly the character is, I would like to think of it as a slasher film where we have the killer whose identity is a mystery to us, since he wears nothing but a mask, and it is our job as the view to try and guess who the killer really is.
jamal91788
01-19-2006, 07:41 PM
I wonder...does Misfit have a real identity like regular superheroes? Kinda like how Spiderman is really Peter Parker, is Misfit really someone else? Or is he just Misfit? Or maybe is he someone else that the reader isnt even supposed to know (which would be cool and original)?
Also, you should make a pic of what Desmond really looks like b/c all the pics you have of him are just his face in shadows and you cant get a real distinct idea of what he looks like.
misfit84j
01-23-2006, 07:32 AM
Yes, Misfit does have an identity, but the reader doesn't know who he is, at least until later on down the line. We never know his real name.
As for pics with his face, I'm working to get better at faces. I've done a few pics, but they just didn't look right so I just post what looks good at the moment. Plus, I wouldn't wanna spoil any vital artwork from the story ;).
Anyhow, be back sooner or later with some more stuff. Peace.

What you could always do, if you finish it in the next few months, is go to Kinko's or some other printing company and have them print a ton of copies. Then you could rent a booth at some comic conventions during the summer and promote it. Well, that's if you want to take the Indie comic route.

Ok...
Been a while since I posted something new so I thought I'd put up a sort of teaser poster thing for the first Misfit story. In fact, I am not entirely sure that I'll continue calling it Misfit. I am trying to brainstorm a proper name for my stories because "misfit" just isn't sitting well with me anymore. But eh we'll see.
So yah here is a simple teaser pic for my first story that I will (sooner or later:o ) finish.

Why would you wanna change the name? It's a catchy title. Even though it's got that corny ring, it works enough to make it passable.
But if you were to change the name, how about Maverick? Kinda unoriginal but it could work if that's the kinda name you're going for. I still like Misfit better though.

what other villains besides Desmond and Mr Lightning exist in the Misfit universe?
misfit84j
06-19-2006, 02:55 PM
HERE ARE SOME CHARACTERS I'VE BEEN BRAINSTORMING
There is Das Drache.
If there ever was a person that is almost guaranteed a victory in hand2hand combat, Das Drache is that guy. Born in the vacinity of what was once Germany, Drache decided that the only way to keep himself busy and . . . happy, was to kill people for money. He is an expert in practically any form of melee combat. The fact that he is quite insane just adds to his reputation of being the world's most well-known and feared mercenary. It's only a matter of before this Misfit character becomes the next target of Das Drache.
Also, Justice.
Born John Justice. Born into a family that taught him one thing: the United States must be reformed. A true American so to speak since the United States was ultimately destroyed by the rest of the world in WW5 in the year 2145, 200 years after WW2. But, as new powers came and went in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave, it was just hopeless to think that North America would be once again be a profitable landmass. The USA was to begin with fatigued and tattered after years and years of being the world's top superpower; it was bound to die. According to John Justice, however, the United States is still here. And what better way to support your country than to take out anyone that may threaten your freedom? For years John had been taught that America was a beautiful place, the greatest place on Earth! It was the only place someone could live a peaceful life. John grew to love this place. He grew to loev America. Yet he had never seen it. After his parents passed away, he took it upon himself to fulfill his dream. With his rifle strapped on his back, he alone will restore his United Staes of America, his true home.
Duke DaVinci.
Head of practically any crime in the colony of Old York. Since money is inexistent, the only profit comes in the form of shere authority. Pop, Heroine, Vile-X, you name it, Duke can get it for you. But it'll come at a price: your soul. Once you get a taste of Duke fukcin' DaVinci, you're in his pocket until someone puts a bullet in your head. It's been a long time since anybody hasn't heard the name DaVinci. According to the authorities, approximately 15,000 of the 21,000,000 inhabitants of Old York work under him. Nobody messes with the Duke. Except that Misfit. He messed with Duke DaVinci one, but never again. He's dead.
jamal91788
06-20-2006, 11:05 AM
Not really digging the name "DaVinci" since it shows no relation to Leonardo DaVinci, just the fact that the name itself is cool. And also...WW5? Isnt that a little over the top? By WW3, I think the world would be ****ed-up enough with the nuclear weapons and stuff.
I really dig the name Justice though. Cool character arc.
spawn5061
06-20-2006, 05:30 PM
it makes since for it to be WW5 because in like 20 or 30 years after the first WW, WW2 popped its ugly head in. its shapeing out to be a great story. keep up the good work.

Here is a very short synopsis.
Misfit is gonna be a story set in the future(2130), where most of the world is is recovering from WW5. Towns in North America have merged into larger, more dense cities/colonies, one in particular being Old York Old York is the new city that was built on top of New York after massive battles from the years before. This new city is about 10 times the size of New York.
Old York is independent of other colonies, due to its shere size and density. The others have simply given up on trying to bring order and organization to the constant madness that lies within the city barriers, which stand taller than most buildings. Which makes it a pretty dark place.
Inside the city, there's talk of a phantom of some sort. A black figure with glowing blue eyes. Very similar to the Moth Man, only again, with blue eyes. Some say they've seen it fly, some say they've actually spoken to it. And some say it's actually a man. This talk is taken as mere fairy tale fodder.
Once it's finally proven that this phantom is REAL and in fact a MAN, things in Old York tense up. It has to be killed. Why? Why should someone with such extraordinary abilities be killed off so quickly? Well, why didn't makind kill the extraordinaries that brought on WW3 and WW4 . . . and WW5? After they were all exterminated in the aftermath of war, peace and harmony seemed near. But there seems to be one left(Maybe more?). It's imperative that city officials track it down and kill it!
Misfit. It's the story about the night this phantom becomes apparent.
***Very vague I know, but I really shouldn't give away the details in between because that's the project I'm working on right now. How does it sound? I need critiquing.

I personally think WW5 is way too far down the road. I think WW3 would even be good enough since it would be the next one coming and would ultimately be the cause of the end of the world if it ever came bout.
But if you're going for a stylish, hyper-neo feel like Sin City or Dark City or The Matrix, I think you can do alot. I just hope you'll post an actual issue online for everyone to really grasp this story.
