Nice Manning cards. I remember in about 2001-2002 when his auto'd cards would go for $15 sometimes. Amazing.

That's got to be one of very few Thurman Thomas auto'd cards. When the heck is the last time he signed for a card company? I saw that there's about 20+ players in UD Legends that have never had a certified auto card issued, either. This is starting off to be an incredible year for NFL trading cards....

Coltsmavs, PM me your address. I've had this in a box since about 2000. I got it through the mail back before anyone cared that he would be setting tons of records every year. The yellowish tint is from lighting, the card is NM+ and crisp white.

Well, after seeing that there appears to be hope for Topps products and autographs this year, I went to a show in downtown Columbus today. Not much product out there interests me at this point, but I'm definitely liking the odds with this years rookies. I picked up 4 packs of the 2006 Donruss Classics and pulled an Adam Jennings autographed RC #581/599, as well as a Michael Vick "Sunday's Best" game jersey card. Not bad, I figured. .......... I also grabbed a box of the 2006 Topps Draft Picks and Prospects. I wasn't expecting much since the product is deep in rookie offerings, perhaps a Reggie Bush or Leinart base RC. About 4 packs into the box I pull this...

No problem,It's changed a few times but this is the latest version I've seen. The Brodie Croyle Signature series and Alumni Association K.Stabler/B.Croyle/50 is a redemption but yet it appears he signed the Saturday Signatures

Anyway, pulled a triple jersey of gale sayers, walter payton, and cedric benson out of donruss classics.
Also bought a pack of sweet spot baseball and got nolan ryan auto 25/25 on a glove, thought it was a cool card.

No problem ColtsMavs, I knew you were a fan of his and would enjoy it. That Bowman Sterling is loaded. If there ever was a year worth dropping big $$ on cards, it's this year with these rookies. I'll be hurting later this year when this stuff all releases...

I did already pre-order boxes of SPx and Legends-- Since it didn't seem like there was going to be enough interest to purchase the whole cases. (Also because the dealers aren't cutting any breaks this year anyway because of the strong RC's).

I missed this when reading last month's Beckett football, but the last part of the autograph article mentions that UD has rights to make 12 sets. They only preview 11 of them in the article. I don't know what set is missing (if any), so it looks like something awesome might be releasing from UD late in the NFL season...

Only thing that worries me about product like Sterling is that I'll bet it's loaded with a TON of autographs that will be worth about $3 each. The jersey's are great, but with so many included no one will care much for those either. It's the main reason that I stick with Upper Deck stuff on the high end. It's proven time and time again to be just about the only time that I can recoup what I paid for the product and still keep my favorite cards.
*** After reviewing the information about UD SP Authentic for this year I noted that the auto'd jersey cards will be falling one EVERY 2 BOXES now. Be careful with this one. That pretty much means that UD has jacked up production because they know it'll sell to everyone after the RC's. It also means that they had to determine a 1 per 2 box ratio of insertion on the Auto'd RC's. If you aren't buying a sealed case, or see the person selling you packs bust open the case right in front of you, I'd avoid this product. It doesn't take much to figure out that if you bought a sealed case... open box #1 and find auto'd RC... you then bust box #3 and #5 in the case and you've left other customers with the boxes that (likely) don't contain auto'd jersey RC's. Not trying to down the SP product, but this can be figured out with little effort and might save someone some $$.

What the heck is up with that Nolan Ryan card? Is that from a new product? Did UD really put that in a pack as a certified autograph card? If so... wow...
I am in no way detracting from your post, but I'm just blown away if that is how that card was issued.
The Legends cards have got some really great photos from the past. I really wish UD would do a comprehensive set in B & W. There is so much great classic photography that most people will never see because the rights are owned by a lot of archives and such.
On a different note, I've got something that should arrive each week for the next few. Topps Jumbos box should be here Mon/Tue. 2 boxes of UD about a week later when released.... a box of UD Legends when released... a box of SPx on release. I just noticed that the regular UD has 25 SP rookies this year, so that should make it a pretty good deal for the $50/box. it's going for right now.

Broke a box of 2006 Topps Jumbos (hobby). Pulled some duplicates of the top RC's like Leinart, Williams and Cutler. No auto's or jersey cards, though, which is disappointing. Did also pull an AJ Hawk "Special Edition" RC that I might keep for now. If anyone is interested in any of the base RC's, they're on eBay beginning at $.99 each under my ID: nabzy28.

I have busted 2 boxes of the Topps Jumbos so far. Was looking for a Rookie Premiere auto, but came up empty. I am surprised you didn't at least get a jersey card in your box, as you are supposed to (or a "hit" of some kind-auto, jersey, etc.). In one of my boxes, I got a Jonathan Ogden pro bowl jersey card, and in the other, I pulled a Willie Parker "Super Tix" card, with a ticket stub from Super Bowl XL on the back. Pretty neat little card, but I would have preferred a Rookie Premiere auto.

Yeah, I thought the odds were best on the Jumbos but maybe not. I don't even consider jersey cards as 'hits' anymore for any product. They're virtually as common as any other insert they include. If it's not a signature or auto'd RC it's just filler these days. (Unless it's something like a Jim Thorpe jersey that you might find in Leaf Limited or something.)

I totally agree with you. Game used cards are pretty much worthless, especially most of the ones in this product. They do count as a hit according to Topps, though, unfortunately. As for the Topps cards themselves, they look pretty nice, but I am already real sick of looking at them. That said, I am still contemplating getting maybe 5 or 6 more boxes to open, just to maybe pull a Rookie Premiere auto or 2 if I am lucky. At 50-60 bucks per box, it's real tempting.

I think I'll likely just hold off and put that money towards boxes of Bowman Chrome baseball when it hits in a couple weeks, where I know I will at least get an auto per box.

Ahh, that's what always scares me from purchasing older product.... the inevitable fact that I will somehow pull the rookie or "star" that is now a bust. I picked up a box of 1999 SPx a couple years ago. What should I discover the auto'd RC to be: the one and only Shaun King redemption. Not only was he washed up by far at that point, it was the redemption.... long expired. Fortunately UD understood and sent me some other auto's in replacement, but it was a disappointment (and really bad luck) on my part. I'm not too upset with the 2006 Topps. You can't expect much for about $50/box anymore. That's 'low-end' when there's stuff on the way that's got an MSRP of $100/pack. I'd imagine the unmentioned UD product in last month's Beckett is Exquisite for the NFL. If that's the case, I cannot imagine what the auto's will be fetching from something that begins at about $350/pack.

I'll usually only try a box or two of any product. If I get a great card, awesome. If I don't get a great card, no big deal. I give all the base singles away during the holiday season to the toy drives or whatnot. I haven't liked the design of a base/insert set since the 2003 SP Authentic Sign of the Times inserts, so until I'm really moved by design I just keep picking up NFL product and busting a random box for the enjoyment.

Anyhow, I did really like those "Signing Bonus" inserts that year. They blew it when they went to that etched glass standup thing.

You might as well just hold off on the boxes and purchase any of the rookie premiere auto's you want if you were going to drop that much more on boxes. I wish I could take my own advice on that subject, though. It's just so much more fun to take the chance and actually pull a great auto instead of just picking it up on eBay. I'll take a John Elway SP SOTT from 2003 just about any way I could right now, though...

The prices on the Rookie Premiere autos are out of control right now, though. Even "lesser" players are routinely selling as high as 200 bucks. I saw a Derek Hagan go for around that the other day. With a case of Jumbos able to be had at around 350-375, it's a better deal to just get one and hope for a good auto like Bush, Young, Leinart or Davis. I think cases are averaging 2 or 3 autos per. I doubt I'll do it, but it almost makes more sense.

I think those Rookie Premiere auto's selling so high are more the result of the early set builders fighting over them to ensure they can complete a set. I don't see those keeping such a high price tag for the lesser names. I know the red ink auto's are selling for more, but I have to wonder just how long this silly fad will last. People pay more for a different color ink? What the heck is that about? I'm pretty sure that if I was at a show and had somebody sign an official NFL ball in green Sharpie, no one would care. It'd probably be 'worth' less.

Got to be careful on the Topps auto's now, too. Apparently they aren't too great with security on those things when they're unsigned by the players at the premiere and a lot of unsigned copies were 'borrowed' for trading amongst the players. People then just forged sigs of the various players and affixed a Topps hologram from some random common autograph card to sell it as authentic. This has been reported to Beckett and Topps has admitted that they don't keep track of the hologram numbers they utilize for each batch of auto'd cards. (This is the most incredibly stupid practice I've heard.) Meaning: If they were getting 10,000 auto's from the NFL Rookie Premiere, they just didn't even bother to write down anywhere that they would be affixing Topps Hologram #'s 10000-19999. Therefore, it is now anyone's guess as to which auto's might not be authentic and cards that were stolen from any given signing.

Somewhere in this thread is the story surrounding this card. This card has been the center of so much frustration. I have been building the 2003 UD NFL SP Authentic "Sign of the Times" set since its release. I had 3 redemptions turned in to Upper Deck for the Terrell Owens and ended up receiving 3 replacements instead. One was a Peyton Manning, but I still needed an Owens for my set. Paul was kind enough to relay a message from me to the right person at UD and I thought I was finally going to get an Owens. No luck. The card has a stamped number /286 on the front, but there is absolutely no way that 286 of these were released. I believe that the "6" is an error and it's probably closer to /28. Maybe less. I have only ever seen 4 of these in 3+ years. I didn't bid high enough because I was holding false hope that there really were 286 of them floating around. That naive thought hasn't entered my mind in over 2 years now that I haven't been able to find this thing at 3 national shows or get any kind of a response from Upper Deck personnel as to the true numbers in existence of this card.

Anyhow, I certainly was not going to be outbid on this when it popped up on the 'bay this last week...

The one incident that stands out to me at the time this card was released was Owens' holdout and trade demand from the 49ers. *Maybe* that explains it. If they had these suddenly available at the office for the redemptions, and the next day began his holdout and trade demands... he could have possibly been considered out of the Players' Union and therefore issuing this card would have been illegal. (?) I do remember that it was during his Eagles/Ravens/49ers debacle. Perhaps someone doing redemptions on some random day didn't know they weren't supposed to honor these and whatever arrived that day in the mail was all that ever made it out...

The possibilities are endless at this point.

I don't know how many people pre-buy, but I'd recommend staying away from SP Authentic (NFL) for a couple more weeks. It is absolutely ridiculous what the resellers were charging just 2 weeks ago for this product. It started at $150/box + shipping. Everyone started there. Luckily, no one was buying. It's down to about $115-$125 right now and I'm sure some will fall to about $110, but that should be about it. If the odds are the same as what was advertised early on (one auto'd patch RC every 2 boxes this year), that is lame just by itself and would not justify boxes anywhere near $150 each. Does anyone have the sell-sheet for this? I am wanting to get a couple boxes from one of the larger dealers since the prices are falling, but want to know for sure that the RC auto patches are either every box or every two. Thanks.

^^ Do you really like the LCM that much to pick up a case? How about the Leaf Limited? I know you don't receive as many cards, but the Lettermen 1/1's are a lot more possible than some of the LCM stuff. There just seems to be so many lesser known players being put into the Leaf Certified Materials and a lot of box breaks similar to what you've posted above.

I still find it amusing that, even after my numerous emails, Beckett still does not look into that card and still lists it at $30. I would like to hear and meet the people that have purchased that card for about $15 on the low end, $30 on the high end. I'm pretty sure it's ZERO.

What cards of theirs do you have that you know are very rare or have been in your personal collection (and probably prevented some other collector from completing a particular set because of it).

Here are 3 of the 5 2002 Score Darren Woodson's from the 2002 National. They have the embossed National symbol and are serial numbered on the back. You could only get these from a wrapper redemption program at the 2002 National.

Hey Nabzy! I am a big DWood fan too. Don't collect all his stuff but do have a few things. Would look to get a custom done of him using an RW fig. A couple of years ago, a guy here in the bay area had a 1/1 Leaf Mirror Black NFL Logo card of DWood. He wanted $300. It killed me that I couldn't get it off him but that's just too much dough...I've been looking at 2004 Fleer Platinum RC's #/299. Still need the Big Ben and Eli, just missed out on a Big Ben one on ebay a few days ago. Just picked up Julius and Rivers recently. Love the old school looking cards.

That Leaf Mirror Black is in the possession of a collector in Texas, now. He's listed it on eBay a couple times but is asking too much for my liking. If he got it for $300, I think he's trying to more than double his investment if I recall correctly. Between the two of us, we should have at least one copy of every Darren Woodson card ever released. I am missing less than 5-10 that I know of... and they're some super rare regional or retail variations, for the most part.

The low numbered RC's like that always present a problem. If you don't get them now you risk never seeing them offered again. On the other hand I think that, outside of RB's/QB's, you can always get the other offensive players for a lot less if you wait. Tough call on that Colston.

SPx is very much a hit or miss this year. I know it's still an expensive break just on the potential of the big 'hit'. I got a little mojo and pulled an AJ Hawk auto jersey RC and a Mario Williams in box #2. I stopped pressing my luck and haven't broken any more since. Hang on to any of the offensive RC's and hope these guys end up having a break out season in a couple years. The 4 RC's I pulled were guys I never heard of but they could still do something in a few years.

Each pack is a box, pretty much. You get 4 cards for whatever price you pay. It's all about the big 'hit', so to speak. I've always had some pretty good luck with this product, but I've seen people break a case on Beckett and report nothing but jersey cards of guys like Chris Chambers and the like. It's all luck, of course. I am very happy with what I pulled. Had it been just the regular jersey cards of common players, I would have been disappointed big time. I haven't even seen a lot of the Lettermen inserts pulled yet, so the opportunity is still there...

I have one more box on the way and I think I'm done with this for a little while. Gotta start savin' up for the 2007 National in Cleveland... :)

Not really, he gave me a pretty decent deal on them. Sad part is he had a TON of stuff I needed, but he wanted full book value on everything even though his stuff wasn't selling well on Ebay. I needed his jersey card from 2004 Prestige, he wanted $40 for it and it was a plain white piece.

I just ripped open a box of 89 Pro Set series 2. I got 1 B. Sanders 1 D. Sanders, 2 Aikman 1 Irvin and 2 D. Thomas. Not bad for one box :)
