Svatos awaits contract
Avs forward says he's 'optimistic,' but he'll sit if no deal in hand
By Rick Sadowski, Rocky Mountain News
August 24, 2006

CENTENNIAL - Marek Svatos was on the ice Wednesday when the Avalanche conducted informal workouts at the South Suburban Family Sports Center.
But will the gifted 24-year-old forward be there when the Avalanche begins training camp Sept. 13 to prepare for the 2006-07 season?

Aside from unrestricted free agent Jim Dowd, Svatos is the only remaining holdover without a contract, and he'll reluctantly stay away from camp unless he has one.

"This isn't what we wanted," Svatos said after staying on the ice for about 20 minutes after the workout to shoot and pass pucks with Steve Konowalchuk and Cody McCormick. "But I'm optimistic about it and, hopefully, by the time camp starts, I'm going to sign. This is where I want to play."

Svatos missed the final 20 games of the 2005-06 season and the playoffs because of a fracture in his right shoulder suffered on a hit by Dallas' Jason Arnott in a March 4 game.

Despite the injury, Svatos tied captain Joe Sakic for the team lead in goals, with 32, and matched the NHL rookie record for game-winning goals, with nine.

Except for spending about four weeks in his native Slovakia after the season, Svatos said he stayed in Denver to rehabilitate his shoulder, and he expects to be ready for the Oct. 4 regular-season opener against the Stars.

"He's progressed really well and should be ready to go, so that's good," said Rich Evans, Svatos' agent, from his office in Edmonton, Alberta. "Now we just have this small, little matter of getting a contract."

Svatos made the league minimum $450,000 last year and was tendered a $495,000 qualifying offer by the Avalanche in June to retain his rights.
He is a restricted free agent, meaning the team could match any offer from another team.

Evans said he hasn't resumed contract talks since returning from vacation Monday, but added: "I'm sure we'll be engaged in discussions over the next little while."
The Avalanche considers Svatos to be one of the league's bright young stars and wants to re-sign him, but it apparently is reluctant to give him a lucrative, long-term deal because of his history of shoulder problems; he previously injured his left shoulder three times.

"I spent pretty much all summer here working on my shoulders and everything else," Svatos said. "The trainers are putting lots of time on me. I just got on the ice this week, but it feels pretty good.

"(Injuries) are something I want to put behind me and not think about. It was frustrating last year because everything was going well. Unfortunately, I got hurt again. It's why, this summer, I tried to do everything I can to prevent those injuries."
Not wanting to take chances, especially without a contract, Svatos is skating and shooting but isn't participating in scrimmages. "A couple weeks from now, maybe three, I think I'm going to be pretty much ready," he said.

Long, scary summer for Lacroix
By Terry Frei
Denver Post Staff Writer

Avalanche president Pierre Lacroix Wednesday confirmed he had a major scare this summer, when doctors feared a mass in his spine might be cancerous or an indication of another serious disease.

After hospital stays in the Las Vegas area and in Denver, plus two visits to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., Lacroix finally got the good news on Aug. 18: The mass isn't a tumor.

He returned to work at the Avalanche office in the Pepsi Center last week, under a schedule that reflects his relinquishment of the general manager's duties and also doctors' orders.

Lacroix emphasized that he was grateful for the "unbelievable" support of the Kroenke Sports and Avalanche organizations during the ordeal, and that the scare had nothing to do with his decision to step down as GM. He said this all began a week after the hiring of Francois Giguere as Lacroix's successor.

The scare lasted so long because a biopsy in the spine area is so risky it is a last resort, performed only when the likelihood of cancer is determined to be high. But Lacroix said doctors finally were able to rule out cancer and other serious illnesses after he underwent so many tests that he lost count of the number.

"You're in a long period of knowing nothing, or imagining the worst," Lacroix said. "I had a mass, and still have a mass, in my back. They said to me that it could be from so many things. It could be from a virus or a disease, or it could be a tumor."

A tumor could have meant "cancer."

"No doubt the worst things go through your mind," Lacroix said. "It was very tough on my wife and my family, but the outcome is great."

Lacroix said the scare began at his Las Vegas-area home on the night of June 2, a few hours after his wife, Colombe, fired her first hole-in-one on the golf course. He had discomfort in his stomach and back, and when he couldn't sleep, he called his longtime friend and Nevada neighbor, René Angelil, singer Celine Dion's husband.

"He's had two heart attacks and I asked him, 'What are the symptoms?"' Lacroix said. "He said, 'Burning sensation in the stomach and back pain."'

Angelil was alarmed and took his friend to a Las Vegas-area hospital. Lacroix stayed
there several days and underwent an angiogram and other tests that determined he didn't have a heart problem. "They told me I had 'the Lance Armstrong' heart," Lacroix said with a laugh.

After an MRI, Lacroix was still having such severe pain doctors agreed it was best for him to return to Denver for more tests under the supervision of Avalanche team doctors and neurologist Stan Ginsburg. Lacroix spent two weeks in the intensive care unit at Rose Medical Center. He joked that at one point, he had been given so many steroids he would have flunked any professional sports league's drug tests. "I had all the symptoms of something bad in my spine," Lacroix said. "That's why I was in such pain. ... They told me they gave the maximum amount of medication my body would take, thinking they would shrink that mass. It didn't work."

Doctors gradually ruled out various serious diseases, including multiple sclerosis. Still, cancer was considered a possibility until spine specialists at the Mayo Clinic concluded after yet more tests that a biopsy wasn't necessary, that the mass wasn't cancerous.

"They told me they would have to monitor it, and that I might have another reaction like I had a few months ago, but that there was, in their opinion, no need to go in for any kind of surgery," Lacroix said.

"You can't call it a tumor. You don't know why it hits. It hit me and created this malformation of the spine. People live with pain in the back, and there's nothing wrong with that."

The alternatives were a lot worse.

even more about svatos. apparently, he's telling people he has already signed

http://hokej.sme.sk/c/2880833/Svatos-sa-dohodol-s-Colorado-Avalanche.html

Marek Svatos agreed on the new contract with AVS, where together with Sakic he was last yr the best scoring player. Information was brought up by daily Plus Jeden Den. "I was a bit nervous, but I trusted my agent that he makes it done. I have concentrated only on getting best prepared for the season before the start" said for the PJD Marek, who has chosen to make consensus with the team and not to go to take easier arbitration possibility. "We wanted a fair agreement, therefore arbitration was not an option". Svatos has agreed on the new over 1mil. contract only 2 weeks before the preseason camp. "If we wouldn't agree, Colorado would trade me to another club, or I would be forced to play in Europe. That would be the worst scenario." The Kosice system grown talent is after the shoulder injury that has not allowed him to play full NHL season and says he is 95% OK. "I will for sure miss out the preseason games, but I will be ready for the season." added Svatos.

http://www.hokej.sk/clanok43594.htm

Marek Svatos has signed a new deal with Colorado Avalanche. 24yrs old Kosice native that has scored 32 goals despite shoulder injury has had 450-ths USD, new contract is higher, which also Marek confirmed to us. He didn't want to mention exact numbers.

Marek is happy not to miss the training camp that starts 15. sept.

IT'S OFFICIAL!
http://www.coloradoavalanche.com/news/currentdetails.asp?ID=604

DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that it has signed forward Marek Svatos to a one-year deal.

“Marek played a key role in the team’s success last season,” said Avalanche Executive Vice President and General Manager Francois Giguere. “He had an outstanding year and scored several key goals. Along with Alex Ovechkin, Dion Phaneuf and Sidney Crosby, Svatos was a part of the outstanding and exciting new brand of NHL players that made their debut last year. We are expecting him to be a huge offensive contributor to our team again this season.”

Svatos, 24, distinguished himself early in his rookie year with a hat trick in his second game of the season (sixth career game), the fastest to begin a career since Dean Sylvester’s hat trick four games into the 1999-2000 campaign for the Vancouver Canucks. Clutch goal scoring would also mark Svatos’ rookie campaign as nine of his 32 goals were game-winners, matching Steve Larmer’s rookie record in 1982-83. In addition, 13 of his 32 goals tied the game or gave the Avalanche the lead.

Svatos played in 61 games, recording 32 goals and 18 assists before a fractured shoulder sidelined him for the remainder of last season. At the time of his injury, his 32 goals trailed only Ovechkin among rookies and his 50 points ranked him third behind Ovechkin and Crosby. Despite his injury, his goal mark would hold up as being the most on the club (tied with Joe Sakic) and Svatos would finish the season ranked third among NHL rookie goal scorers. He finished second only to Anton and Peter Stastny in goal scoring among franchise rookies (both scored 39 in 1980-81). His 12 power play goals matched Anton Stastny’s mark (1980-81) for most by a rookie. Svatos’ four-point effort versus Calgary on October 10 equaled the Avalanche rookie record set by Milan Hejduk during the 1998-99 season. The franchise mark for points in a game stands at eight set by Peter and Anton Stastny during the 1980-81 season.

Svatos made his Olympic debut with Slovakia at the 2006 Winter Games, playing in all six games. The Kosice, Slovakia native was Colorado’s 10th selection (227th overall) in the 2001 Entry Draft.

starscream's ghost
09-05-2006, 10:35 PM
what do you mean "would" be writing us off? they already are! no one thinks the avs will do anything. personally, i think they'll be just fine. maybe not immediate cup contenders cause the d still seems weak, but if theo keeps the form he had in the playoffs and the offense is like it was last season the avs will be a force in the northwest. and they also need to stay consistent and not floundering around the standings so damn much

avsfan21
09-05-2006, 10:45 PM
Probably just squeak into a playoff spot again. All depends on injuries I guess.

IceRat
09-05-2006, 10:46 PM
I'd answer that question pretty much the same way I answered it last campaign

I have low expectations
only problem is a number of players on our team overachieved last season or had career years..... one cannot count on that to happen again

I'm not bothered by the Tanguay loss and I don't believe he is worth the coin he got from Calgary
I still think we failed to address our need for a bonified second line center
still I like what will be our top 2 lines and look forward to seeing some of the younger guys get a chance

D is a big concern, not because we lost Blake (who only showed up for half last season) but because we still have liabilities around such as Breezeby and Sauer.
The best part of our D last season was not its D but its ability to contribute to the offensive side of the puck. I don't know that that kind of output will be repeated but there is no way the D can play as poorly in our own zone as last season if we are to do anything.

As for goaltending I was never a huge Theo fan but I am much more confident going into this season with our goaltending than I was last season.

We'll have to see how healthy the top guns on this team can stay and if we make any moves to address needs during the season.

IceRat
09-05-2006, 10:58 PM
I'd also add if it wasn't for some rediculous clause that allows bonuses from 01 to count against our current cap we would have almost an additional 5 million more to spend

as it is I believe we still have room under the cap to spend now or better yet around the trade deadline if needed

for being such a young organization, the avs sure do love to bring in former players. goulet, billington, eric lacroix, curtis leschyshyn and now, sylvain lefebvre is back

http://www.coloradoavalanche.com/news/currentdetails.asp?ID=605

DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced Wednesday the appointment of former Avalanche defenseman Sylvain Lefebvre to its scouting staff. The focus of his work will be in scouting and overseeing the development of the organization’s prospects.

“We’re extremely happy to have Sylvain join our staff,” said Avalanche Executive Vice President and General Manager Francois Giguere. “He’s going to be a key component of our player developmental efforts and he’ll be a strong resource for our younger players.

“Sylvain enjoyed a very successful NHL career, he knows our philosophy and we believe his background will be a great asset in his new role.”

Lefebvre, 38, was a draft day acquisition by the Quebec Nordiques in 1994 from the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was a key member of the Avalanche blueline corps for four years and a member of the club’s 1996 Stanley Cup Championship squad. Originally signed as a free agent in 1986 by the Montreal Canadiens, Lefebvre would go on to appear in 945 NHL contests over 14 NHL seasons with Montreal, Toronto, Quebec/Colorado and New York Rangers organizations.

Thinks of Klee in more of a leadership role and that he should play well with Kono because they have experiance playing with eachother. Also said he would like to see Wolski really step up and take a spot on the team.

What surprised me was his talk about Paul Stastny. He sounded really high on the kid, which makes me think he might be given a real good shot to make the team.

i wouldn't be surprised to see stastny doing something like wolski this season. and hejduk does need to step it up. went from a 50 goal scorer and rocket richard winner to just a middle of the pack goal scorer. maybe it was forsberg being healthy that season, but i think the duke needs someone like forsberg on his line again to be like he was

finally, some optimism about this team! and leo won't be out as long as originally thought

http://www.denverpost.com/avalanche/ci_4313285

Jose Theodore has bought a house in Denver and his mind is on nothing but hockey. Jordan Leopold won't be out as long as first feared, and there might not be enough spots for all the quality forwards on the roster.

Such news had Avalanche coach Joel Quenneville hardly sounding like a man resigned to a foreboding NHL season, as some pundits already have declared for his team. The Hockey News has picked the Avs to finish 13th out of 15 teams in the Western Conference this season, grading the team overall with a C.

Quenneville's team faced dire predictions last season as well, however, and managed to finish among the final four teams in the Western Conference before playoff elimination. Despite the offseason losses of Alex Tanguay and Rob Blake, Quenne- ville said this season's Avs can be better than last.

"This year, we feel we're even deeper up front with our forwards," said Quenneville, who will oversee the start of Avalanche rookie camp today at Centennial's Family Sports Center and regular training camp Friday. "We've got to be respectful to what Alex, Rob and Danny (Hinote) brought to our organization in the past. But the nature of our game now is you've got to expect change."

While the Avs lost second-leading scorer Tanguay to Calgary, Quenneville likes what he sees from his remaining forwards. Joe Sakic is still around, along with Milan Hejduk, Marek Svatos, Andrew Brunette, Steve Konowalchuk, Ian Laperriere, Antti Laaksonen, Brett McLean, Pierre Turgeon and newcomer Tyler Arnason.

Add youngsters Brad Richardson, Mark Rycroft, Wojtek Wol- ski and, possibly, Paul Stastny to the mix, and Quenneville believes Tanguay's loss can more than be overcome.

Quenneville said defenseman Leopold, acquired from the Flames in part for Tanguay, should return from hernia surgery by mid-October - not November, as first forecast. Quenneville, who has a 350-239-86 record in nine NHL coaching seasons, is hopeful Leopold can bloom into a solid, No. 1 defenseman. Leopold couldn't ask for a better coach than the former defenseman Quenneville, who has a reputation for bettering the careers of his blue-liners.

"I think he had an injury last year that really bothered him," Quenneville said. "We feel like he's going to help us, and feel he could improve on some things."

Overcoming the loss of Blake probably will be the Avs' toughest challenge.

"You hate to lose Rob Blake. He's one of the top D in the league. He can change the game, but it comes down to money," Konowalchuk said.

"No one wanted him to leave, but it's all money these days. That's one luxury the Avalanche used to have. But we've still got veteran guys, and still got belief in one another. It seems like most teams lost guys. Today's game is going to be which teams come together, even more so. Because there aren't going to be the powerhouses like there used to be. Look how Edmonton came together all of a sudden. It doesn't take long to fall; on the other hand, it doesn't take much to rise up, if guys come together."

Quenneville and Konowalchuk pointed to goalie Theodore for additional optimism. A summer for Theodore that included some off-ice headlines has been replaced by the tranquility of a new home and regular workouts with his new teammates.

"He looks great," Quenneville said of Theodore. "We're counting him as a new guy this year. We think he's going to play well for us, and he's anxious to get going."

Quenneville said he is also eager to see his rookies perform today, including 2006 first-round pick Chris Stewart.

"He had a great summer playing for the Team Canada developmental team, and I can't wait to see him," Quenneville said.

I like the optimism Q has but you don't get deeper in the forward ranks by losing Alex Tanguay and adding Arnason and Rycroft. That being said I'd think a ranking of 10th or 11the West would be more realistic at this point.

Last season SI dogged us, had Chicago in front of the Avs and the Hurricanes and Rangers were ranked in the 20s I believe. I think the Avs will go how Jose goes.

Potential bad news for Kono...

Konowalchuk having heart checked out

ENGLEWOOD, Colorado (Ticker) - Steve Konowalchuk of the Colorado Avalanche could not join his teammates for the start of training camp.

The team announced on Friday that an EKG revealed that the veteran left wing may have a heart problem.

"Results from standard EKG testing done yesterday (Thursday) revealed an abnormality and further examination is required at this time to determine the exact nature of his condition," Avalanche trainer Matt Sokolowski said.

Further information will be announced after more medical tests are conducted

Avalanche Blueliner

.. John-Michael Liles was chosen by the Colorado Avalanche with the 159th overall pick in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. After a stellar career with Michigan State, the 25-year old native of Zionsville, Ohio, made his NHL debut in 2003 and led all rookie defensemen in scoring with 34 points, making the All-Rookie Team in the process. In 2005-06, Liles upped that total to 49 points and finished 14th in scoring amongst all NHL defenders (11th in goals). In the process, he became the first defender since Brian Rafalski in 2001 to score 30 points in each of his first two NHL seasons. He is already one of the top offensive defensemen in the game, and with Rob Blake’s departure, Liles will be counted on to anchor the Avs blueline. Liles is a star in the making and we are thrilled to welcome him to Frozen Pond.

looking at the updated box score
we are taking a lot of shots against 26 vs 18 with 7 mins to go in the second (good sign for Theo)
and we are loosing a ton of faceoffs

the kids Wolski, Stastny, and Strazzobosco look to have the most shots on goal with 3 each
that Strazzobosco goal noted above must be a mistake

screw most of what I said above (I think) since the boxscore I was looking at just updated after the 2nd and now says Theo only faced 12 shots and Budaj 1 shot while Turco faced 10 and Ellis 1

Hi guys. Hope all of you are doing well tonight.

Avery hit Sakic early and to me it was not a cheap hit. I'm also not the type of person to defend Avery or any other player in this league but he did hit Sakic shoulder to shoulder into the boards and it looked like Sakic's Feet came out from under him. The Hit was right infront of Ref Mick McGough(Yeah thats another story) but after that I don't remember Sakic playing. Speaking of which after the hit and the fight that occured after Avery did not play again til the 2nd period and the fight happened about 2-3 minutes in if I recall right.

Budaj played well tonight and made about 3-6 good saves on some good Kings chances.

Overall with Sakic not playing the Avs lineup changed around a lot. Brunette and Hedjuk at that point were obviously the best scoring threat and without Skrastins in the line up Finger got a lot of playing time as well as Cumisky who seemed to play solid that you didn't recognize him much.

from tsn:

While Yan Stastny vies for a job here with the Bruins, his brother Paul, ex- of the University of Denver, has had an impressive first training camp with the Colorado Avalanche. The Avalanche, with aging pivot Joe Sakic centering a No. 1 line with Milan Hejduk and Andrew Brunette, are in need of young legs and scoring depth. Paul Stastny collected eight shots, and popped in the OT winner, last week in an exhibition game against the Red Wings. He pivoted a line that had fellow newbies Wojtek Wolski and Chris Steward, the No. 6 pick overall in this year's draft. - Boston Globe

Avs' Ian Laperriere, 32, is happy in Colorado. He is coming off a career-best 21-goal season and enters this season as one of the Avalanche's alternate captains. He hopes he can duplicate his statistics of last year, but isn't going to judge his game by stats. - Denver Post

The Avalanche still does not have further news on the condition of left wing Steve Konowalchuk, who left training camp after abnormalities surfaced on an electrocardiogram. The team hopes to get a prognosis early this week. - Denver Post

Just got back from Vegas and wanted to give my 2 cents:

Avery got a huge hit on Sakic knocking Sakic down (as everone heard) - it happened on my side of the ice, so I can't judge where the puck was. It looked to me like Avery was headhunting, but I wasn't super close to it. Regardless, Sakic upper body hit the glass and his legs kept going. He did skate a few more shifts, I believe, but he wasn't himself. He didn't come out of the lockeroom after the 1st.

Seconds after Avery made the hit, Finger grabbed him by the collar from behind and attacked Avery. It was great, but Finger was in over his head. Avery got in a bunch og great hits before Finger grabbed Avery's leg so they'd fall to the ice. It WAS nice to see Finger react so quickly to protect Joe. The game had just started (5 minutes or so) and Avery was playing full speed when it didn't look like anyone else was.

Richardson centered Duke and Bruno for quite a few shifts. Kind of an odd group.

I heard Stewert got hurt, but I never saw it. He played well on a line with May (although I saw him with Wolski and Stastny a couple of times). Wolski was the entire team from what I could tell. Duke had a few good shots, but Wolski and Liles were definitely the most lively and were pushing the Kings hard. The rest of the team (especially D) looked lackluster - Scratch and Clark didn't play.

Cuminsky was awful. Almost embarassingly so. Speaking of embarrasing - Breezebois whiffed on a shot and the entire crowd cheered. He looked like Frankenstein on skates most of the game.

The passing was terrible, but Stastny and Wolski have pretty good chemistry.

Budaj was phenominal for the first 2 periods - I don't know what happened after that. Kings goal #2 sat in the crease for the longest second of my life before it got knocked in behind Budaj. It sat there long enough for evey fan in the MGM to stand and point at it and start saying "There's the puck!!!" before it finally went in.

All in all, it was a pretty damn exciting game. THe Kings really stepped up in the 3rd and that goal with :52 was a heartbreaker.

Coach Q never had the same 2 D-Men paired up for the whole game. He just kept them rotating through. Liles and Wolski seemed to have a ton of ice time (though I haven't looked at any stats). Liles also QB'ed the powerplay.

Stewart got injured I believe late in the 2nd period if I recall Correctly. he went into the boards and was hit but his hand/arm was outstretched so what ended up hitting the board first was his hands. So he dropped his stick and skated off. Most likely it's a jammed wrist and nothing too serious.

The passing was awful on both sides due to the very poor ice out there in Vegas. The third period Ice was probably the worst ice as late in the game you could still tell it was wet.

Yeah, I pointed the puddles out to my wife late in the 3rd. And that does explain all the passes into people's feet! Although the Kings had some really nice crisp passes down low to score on Budaj. Very pretty.

PS: I saw those WWAD shirts everywhere. Kind of funny in a sick, moronic kind of way! ;)

PPS: The only time I really noticed Stewert was up against the boards he had some great maneuvering to keep the puck away from 2 Kings, who eventually wrestled it from him when no Avs showed up to help. I didn't know it was Stewert at the time, but he was quite a puck handler!

On the final Kings goal From where I was sitting I thought Kopitar was far far too low to make the pass back to O'Sullivan but apparently he was not. I was closer to Cloutier for two periods and down low so at that point my vision was distorted.

The WWAD shirts were at first a joke just basically saying if you're boss is hard on you just think What Would Avery Do. The original picture was him with a beautiful sunset it was a funny photo at that point. Well then they made the Avatar I have and decided to make it on a shirt. This was all on www.LetsGoKings.com and one guy works as a shirt maker so thats what they did. They sold like 300 shirts and donated all profits to charty for Breast Cancer Awareness if I believe. Avery was given a couple of shirts for himself and when Avery scores at Staples Center they even put the WWAD Icon on the Jumbotron. It's quite cool to see that one website caused all this.

I think if Stewart gets a couple more years in him he'll be a great checking line foward.

Colorado 1:24, Brad Richardson 1 (power play) (Ian Laperriere, Wojtek Wolski)
Colorado 1:39, Johnny Boychuk 1 (Brad Richardson)
Detroit 2:57, Matt Hussey 1 (Darryl Bootland, Evan Mcgrath)

Means nothing but the small spark of a rivalry kinda still exists :D

whatever paul. i think we all knew he'd make the team like wolski did last season if he impressed in camp. i'm sure he'll be the first called up when the avs get the chance. but i'm wondering if they keep him on the roster till kono gets back or if they stick with richardson or mccormick

DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced Tuesday that it has sent forward prospect Chris Stewart back to his junior club in Kingston, Ontario. Stewart was the club’s first selection (18th overall) in last June’s Entry Draft.

This move brings the Avalanche training camp roster down to 30 players.

The 18-year old Stewart participated in three preseason games with the Avalanche, recording no points with four shots-on-goal. He will return to the Kingston Frontenace of the Ontario Hockey League where he ranked second on the team with 87 points (37g/50a) in 2005-06.

so this article is more about captains around the league than it is sakic, but i'm postin it anyways

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=178890&hubname=

Joe Sakic begins the new season as the NHL's longest-serving captain.
The 37-year-old centre inherited the distinction when Steve Yzerman retired after 20 years in the role with the Detroit Red Wings.
Sakic was named captain of the Quebec Nordiques in 1992, and he has continued to lead the team since it moved to Denver and became the Colorado Avalanche in 1995.
Mats Sundin, captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs since 1997, has the second-longest tenure.
Montreal's Saku Koivu and Ottawa's Daniel Alfredsson assumed the responsibility in 1999, Vancouver's Markus Naslund has had the distinction since 2000, Edmonton made Jason Smith captain in 2001 and Calgary gave the C to Jarome Iginla in 2003.
Others continuing on in the captain's role are Mike Modano in Dallas, Scott Niedermayer in Anaheim, Olli Jokinen in Florida, Shane Doan in Phoenix, Patrick Marleau in San Jose, Mattias Norstrom in Los Angeles, Scott Mellanby in Atlanta, Alexei Yashin of the Islanders, Dallas Drake in St. Louis, Adrian Aucoin in Chicago and Rod Brind'Amour of the Hurricanes.
"Rod is by far the best captain I've ever played with," says Carolina forward Eric Staal. "He's a guy that's going to say things at the right time.
"He lets you do what you need to do to get prepared but he's not going to let anything slide. He's the hardest-working player I've ever seen and you need that, especially from your captain. He's just a great guy all-around and we're so lucky to have him as our leader."
Nine of the 30 teams will have new or no captains.
Centre Peter Forsberg takes over in Philadelphia from the retired Keith Primeau and says he hopes to emulate Sakic, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 1996 and in 2001. Forsberg plays a rambunctious style of hockey, but he's not a screamer.
"Joe wasn't real vocal either," says Forsberg. "He led by example.
"He was always the last one off the ice. He doesn't need to scream and yell. He's just a great captain, a great leader."
Adam Foote, a key cog on defence on those championship Avalanche rosters, is the new captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Luke Richardson was captain last year before being traded.
Defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom is expected to take over from Yzerman in Detroit, although the Red Wings are being coy.
"We're going to name a captain opening night," coach Mike Bab**** said during training camp.
Star right-winger Jaromir Jagr is expected to be named captain of the New York Rangers, although no official confirmation has been forthcoming.
Tim Taylor is the new captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Chris Clark takes over in Washington.
Nashville will name a new captain to replace Greg Johnson, who now is in Detroit, before the start of the season. Prime candidates are Paul Kariya, Kimmo Timonen and Steve Sullivan.
Boston hasn't had a captain since Joe Thornton was traded last Nov. 30, and the Bruins have yet to make an announcement for this season.
New Jersey went without a captain last season and nobody has been tabbed for the C thus far.
The Minnesota Wild select a different captain each month.
Pittsburgh has decided it won't have a captain.
"The biggest reason why is out of respect for what Mario Lemieux did for this franchise," explained head coach Michel Therrien. "We'll keep doing what we did after Mario retired last year."<
Teen sensation Sidney Crosby will ascend to the post, but not quite yet.
Taylor, a third-line centre, is an excellent example of a team opting for a player with a strong work ethic rather than star status to wear the C.
Taylor got to know some of the most respected captains in recent league history as a teammate of Yzerman in Detroit, Ray Bourque in Boston and Mark Messier with the Rangers.
"You can't fly off the handle when things aren't going well," says Taylor. "At the same time, you have to keep an even keel even when things are going real well."
Previous captain Dave Andreychuk retired last winter.
Clark is another not-so-big-name with a C. He replaces Jeff Halpern, who left for Dallas via free agency. Olaf Kolzig would be the captain but the rules disallow goaltenders because the league doesn't want goalies skating from the crease to the penalty box to debate referees' calls.
The Capitals had considered 2006 rookie of the year Alexander Ovechkin but the Russian forward declined, saying he wants to improve his English before taking on such a responsibility.
"Leadership is not a sometime thing or a come and go thing," GM George McPhee explained in picking Clark. "It is an all-the-time thing.
"Chris Clark has all-the-time leadership qualities. He is a leader in the mould of one of our all-time favourites, Dale Hunter, who was a quiet man off the ice, a cantankerous, ultra-competitive player on the ice."

This whole thing sucks...they should just bite the bullet and keep Rock and Roll pt.2...it's a fricken Colorado Hockey Tradition(for thoise that don't know...rock and roll pt.2 was first introduced to the sports world as a celebration song after a Colorado Rockies Hockey game at old McNichols Arena)

And of the selections they have...it had better be "Crowd Chant" the other choices suck. The goal song the DU Pioneers use should at least be considered.

Shaking the pompoms after playoff goals just won't be the same.
