You can almost feel your skin melting away. The air this deep inside the earth is hotter than the mid summer sun and the steam vents, with their sudden gusts of wet, hot vapor are enough to burn the flesh from your bones. You shouldn’t be here right now. No one should. Beneath the surface of the world, dangerous things lurk. And the sweaty, damp walls of the jagged stone corridors in this long-active and tremendously furious volcano, in which you now find yourself, are no place for the fragile body of a man. Yet here you are. Venturing ever deeper. And deeper still. In search of a legend few believe to be true. A treasure of immense magnitude – golds and silvers and jewel-encrusted crowns. It is said that this vast wealth had been stolen from the kingdoms of man by a tyrant – a lord of thieves and murderers. But many things are said, and rumors and folk tales should not be the driving force by which a man finds himself lost in the volcanic glow of uncharted caverns.
The sulfur air burns your lungs as much as it does your body. It has been hours, possibly weeks – for time has no meaning beneath the surface of the world, where there is no night and day – and the atmosphere has begun to make you feel light-headed. Drowsy. You have scald marks randomly burnt across your body where steam has boiled your flesh. Your vision is hazy and blurred from the fumes and sweat. Your eyes sting. But all of this is small in your mind when weighed against the thought of the riches that await. If only the stories, the rumors and the hushed whispers were true.
The rumble of the lava flows that dance along side and below your path has become nothing more than background noise. Until you hear something different. A rumble, but of a different nature. A rumble from behind that sounds more like the labored breathing of something large. Something dangerous.
And you turn. And the treasure and the riches and stinging in your eyes no longer have any meaning, for what you see through the fog and steam tells you that you should not be here and true-to-life or not, no treasure will ever be yours and you will never see the sun again…
