I saw some of the other articles have been mentioned, but I didn't see this one:

Sounds like Spawn is finally going to start moving again!

Todd talks about everything from the comic to the animation to the movie. word.

Sounds like the new movie is going to be a Sam & Twitch movie... interesting idea. Sometimes I think Todd likes them more than Al.

The movie sounds like Predator 2. Its the character that is mainly focused on, but isnt shown much, cops know theres a bad *** guy running around, but hard to find. He also pointed out that the first script they came up with was questioned because Spawn didnt talk in the whole movie. I think it would be REALLY interesting to see in that form, but not sure how good it could be. Visually it seems they're going to take a step back because of the budget, or the lack of.

I agree with the Sam & Twitch movie thing, and this is something that's frustrated me about Todd McFarlane every time I hear him talk about Spawn. He can go on and on about how Spawn affects the world around him, but either won't go into, or has no clue himself, about how Spawn thinks inside himself.

I was with him right up until the "Spawn doesn't talk" parts, where the rationale is that Spawn is some demonic figure without a personality, etc, etc. The problem with that is that Spawn ultimately ISN'T a demonic figure without a personality, or doesn't need to be, in any event. Why the hell center a movie around a human character, rationalizing it as dealing with a supernatural being that people can't relate to, WHEN YOUR SUPERNATURAL BEING IS ALREADY HUMAN?! That's a MUCH more interesting dichotomy to me, where you have this character who's a monster and a man at the same time, and his internal conflict. In Todd's scenario, Spawn becomes secondary, the conflict becomes external, and there's less inclination to give a flying crap about anyone, because we've SEEN it before. Plenty of people have seen just as many dime a dozen film noir crime dramas and horror movies as they have superhero or supernatural action flicks - i'd even wager that the market is far more saturated by the former than the latter right now, and for at least the past five to ten years, so the argument that the one is more fresh or new than the other is out the window.

The thing is, I want to see not only a fantastical character called Spawn, but a character called Spawn who was once a completely plausable and identifiable human being named Al Simmons. This is a guy who died for his hatred, but was resurrected for love of his wife. That there is some of the best characterization you can come up with, and Todd doesn't want to do anything with it, because seemingly, he somehow thinks that it'll cost him more money to cast an actor as Spawn, and actually build him as a personality that people can care about.

A good performance is a good performance. I say it might as well be from your title character.

I still have nightmares of the first Spawn movie. The sight of John Leguizamo in that horrific outfit. The sound of Martin Sheen spurting out empty dialogue. Wanda's acting. The script. Terry . . . being white. And that stupid little kid. I can still hear the screams.

. . . . . I can still hear the screams. :(

But yah, a Sam and Twitch movie sounds gr8 :)

I was actually very impressed by what Todd said, especially concerning the movie. I think that his Jaws analogy summed things up pretty well. Spawn doesn't need to even speak a word since everything in the movie will be revolving around him anyway. It'll probably be about Twitch finding things out about Spawn's past or something. I for one, have complete faith in this direction for the movie. Of course, regardless of what we say, we'll never know untill it comes out...

Todd Mcfarlane sure reiterates himself a lot.

I noticed whenever he is in an interview, he fills up more pages than necessary because he gives such long-winded answers. Take this interview, for example. They only asked him about 8 questions and he took up about 5 pages because his answers were so long. Todd seems to always have so many ideas going on his head all the time... it's kind of like how Jimmy Hendrix was in his interviews. He always took up hours because he had so much going on at once. They're both kind of scatter brained, but also at the same time they're geniuses in their own right. That's what I like about Todd though... he's smart. Maybe you'd disagree with me on that, but I certainly think he is. He always is thinking and has something to say... and has lots of ideas about how to approach something.

But going back to the movie...

I'm kind of disappointed about it on some levels but on the other hand, like I said, it sounds interesting to have a "Sam & Twitch" movie. I hope ultimately the animated movie makes up for the lack of Spawn in the live-action film. Still, I wish Todd was going to have more villains and such in the animated cartoon movie. It's cool to have Spawn be the only thing with powers in a situation, but you can't help but miss all the other creatures like Violator and Trem. I'd also really like to see the Redeemer have a cartoon adaption... but alas, it seems like that's not going to happen... at least not this time.

i think the problem with making a spawn movie is that everyone has so many ideas of what spawn "should" be. hes had so many changes that you cant cover it all in 2 hours. hes been a super hero, an anti hero, a boogieman, a conflicted dynamic character, and a cold demonic monster. unlike ,say, spiderman, theres no clear way to define his story. i think spawn not talking might make for an interesting change. but so long as he doesnt spend the entire movie in the shadows and actualy does something cool i think the movie could work. i think BJC raises some exelent points though.

I always liked the movie "Darkman." Darkman shares a lot of similarites with our spawn.
