Animation director Rob Coleman confirmed in a recent press event for the upcoming DVD release of Revenge of the Sith that Lucasfilm plans to replace the puppet Yoda in Episode 1 with the CGI version we know from Episode 2 & 3 for the eventual release of the 6-DVD collection. Here's an excerpt...link follows.

Are you going to go back and make Yoda completely CGI for the first prequel?

Rob Coleman: We've actually have gone ahead and done that. We did that between Episode II and III. It was really an exercise to get the team back into the character. On Episode II I was really stressing living up to what my friend here created. So a lot of our focus was on that final battle sequence between Yoda and Count Dookuu. We'd nver seen Yoda do that before. But in the process we were learning about acting as animators. So it was really exciting for me to have the team back again, between Two and Episode III. We used Episode I, as a test bed, because we really didn't know what was gonna be in Episode III, and got the team back up to speed and really honed in on our acting. And using that as springboard we went right into Episode III.

Don't you feel that by going back and digitizing Yoda in Episode I that you're losing 50% of Frank's performace? (Note: Frank Oz provided the puppeteering for Yoda in every film until he went completely CGI.)

Rob Coleman: We don’t lose 50% of his performance because not only we have his voice which stays across of course, but we also have what he did in that movie and that was our touchstone. And we used it absolutely, exactly. It wasn’t my desire to do what he did. It was focusing my animators on what he didn’t do, and just bring that over into the CG world. It was a fantastic exercise for us to get a little bit inside his head, but very specifically to how Yoda moves and interacts with the actors.

Don't care not going to pick up episode 1 again. The only way I will pick up episode 1 again is if they add about 30 min. worth of new footage that aren't deleted scenes found on the DVD.

Even though Episode 1 was aimed at 8-12 year olds, I wished they would trim down Jar Jar's role in the movie, aside from this cool Yoda fix.

Don't. Care. Voted for nr. 2 so maybe everyone will stop talking about it... (not "everyone" on the Spawn board in particular, just everyone in general ;) )

Sounds like a decent move to me, as long as they don't touch the puppet Yoda in EMPIRE.

Yeah, this seems like the sensible thing to do. The Ep 1 Yoda was pretty horrible.

Leave it to Lucas to screw up Star Wars even more.

Here here. The facial structure was completely wrong. Like maybe he looked TOO young.

contre mon frair. I think the puppet looks much older in a weird way than the puppet from the orginal trilogy. Too much detail or something. He also looked stoned out of his mind. I have no problem with the puppet from the OG trilogy at all....it rocks but the Phantom Menace one bugged me from the instant I laid eyes on it.

NO KIDDING! Hated how he looked in that movie. Looked terrible. Didn't even look like the same character.

Considering we're talking about the prequels here, nitpicking little CGI fixes are really at the bottom of the list of things you could be annoyed with :p

If they wanted to re-re-release the OT with CGI Yoda, then they'd be fighting words.

George lucas needs to stop ****in with the star wars movies!
the original trilogy was ****ing amazing but the re released versions sucked!!!
if he changes episode 1 its just going to look stupid... lucas needs to start working on something else and stop messing with his movies, the originals were popular so why mess with them!!!!???
Yoda doesn't look that weird anyways, he just looks sorta younger which he should be like 30 years younger or something so what ever i like it just the way it is, except jar jar... but i don't want any changes to the movie to remove jar jar, jar jar just should not have had that large of a role in the movie to begin with, original star wars fans were in there 40's or something when Phantom came out and most of the original fans didn't like it due to the fact that it was aimed at kids... when i was 6 i saw the original UNEDITED trilogy and loved them, and still do. I like Phantom when i first saw it as a kid but now that i am almost 18 i do not want to watch it because it seems like too much of a kids movie, if jar jar had a smaller role, people who were young when they first saw Phantom would still like the movie and the older fans who saw Star Wars in the 70s would also have liked it more i think...
i know i got somewhat offtopic but i don't honestly give a ****!
all these directors editing their older movies that everyone loves pisses me off, and Star Wars 1 and 2 piss me off too...1 is too much of a little kid movie, and 2 is more of a love story. yeah the other Star wars movies had some love story parts but that was okay because the movie wasn't 100% a love story were as Clones is like 90% love story 10% action
****!

I encourage George to keep working on Episode I until all of Jar Jar's scenes are edited out. He can replace them with some hot pictures of Amadalia.

He can make all the changes he wants. I already have all 6 movies on DVD and don't plan on replacing them until I upgrade to Blu-Ray/HD

Glad they are making Yoda in Episode 1 CGI. It just makes sense since 2 & 3 Yoda are CGI as well. Puppet Yoda has to stay though for 5 & 6.

As for Star Wars re-release... I have 1-6 on DVD and I am happy with it. I will not buy anymore Star Wars movies until they come out on Blu-Ray.

If that's what they want to do that's cool but i'm not so anal that I'll have to run out and grab a copy on the re-release just because of it. I already have all 6 movies on DVD and don't see the point of re-purchasing one of them just because they want to make a minor change.
