Hello everyone,
First time posting here.
SPAWN has always been character near and dear to me so I went ahead and made myself a movie replica suit that I wanted to wear for Halloween.

I was fortunate enough to have Michael Jai White sign the mask and costume and even luckier to have Todd's brother Bob sign it shortly after when I met him in Toronto at one of our local conventions. Both are great guys and very down to earth. It's always nice when these people actually take the time to talk with the fans. A true pleasure. I hope one day to meet Todd in person just to thank him for all he's contributed to the world of comics.

I'm not very good with message board sections so I hope this was posted in the proper area.
It was a lot of fun to wear, people really love this character but the fun of halloween sadly only happens once a year...

Thanks Graham.
It was a lot of fun to make and a lot of really hard work. Took about a year to finish up.
I should add that the Burnt All Simmons face is one of the originals from the movie. I didnt make that. The rest of the body is all mine but I am working on my own burnt All Simmons head mask so that I dont have to keep wearing this beautiful piece of movie history. I'm terrified of ruining it.
Thanks for the kind words. :)

Ok, Ok...
Question are needed to be asked here...
Is this REALLY yours?
I mean like its really too good to be true... coming from someone a "New Guy"
Sorry but i'm not to quick to believe this... plus if you like Spawn as much as you do then you should have been on these boards WAY back in the early days

I'm sorry but I didnt know there was a message board here. I was only told about it last night while in costume.
I dont spend much time on the internet, I work insane hours, and have a family.
Here are some progress photos of the suit being created. I appreciate the fact that you're skeptical about this but trust me, it is not an exact copy of the original. I had to improvise much of the burn marks because it's just not possible duplicating them all.
Arm sculpts...sculpted in Kleen Klay..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/UDesigns1/UniversalDesigns2/armsculpttop.jpg
Working on the burnt skin detail. Kept having to spray it to see it in detail as I was working on it...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/UDesigns1/UniversalDesigns2/burntskindetail3.jpg
First test pull of foam crotch skull from mold. Worked about 60% the way I needed it to but tried to paint it up to see how it would look finished just the same.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/UDesigns1/UniversalDesigns2/crotchskullfrommold.jpg
Test pull of body and added the finished crotch skull and sculpting the white chest detail in Chavante clay..

Final Latex Foam casting. Unpainted at this point..

I hope this clears it up for you. :)

Thank you all. I really appreciate the feedback.
I am posting here as a fan of the SPAWN Universe, and am fortunate enough to have the skills to have realized my own dream to have a full replica suit in my collection.
As much as I would love to show more work, I just dont think it ethical to post other works here that are not SPAWN related.
I've been making all sorts of costumes for a very long time but my SPAWN suit is honestly my prized posession.
Thanks to all for understanding and once again I am humbled by the kind words.

As for the comment about the cost to make something like this, yes...it is quite expensive but it also was a labour of love on my part.
I for one hope that there is a Spawn 2 motion picture. I loved the first one and truly believe a sequel would do even better.

Nice try, though, I like how you came into an old thread just to make yourself look cool by "outing" someone, even though you're completely wrong.

I feel positively joyful right now, I love it when someone tries to make someone look stupid without doing their research.
And for the record, the reason I know this is based in Toronto is because of the phone number on the website. I DO live there, after all. The whole .ca extension is a dead giveaway as well.
Sorry Orbits, coulda been anyone, but it's just not cool to spend all that time finding the site and posting in an old thread just to try and make someone you've NEVER met look bad.
Normally I wouldn't care, but you were so co-cky about it, I just had to jump in. Coulda been anyone.
Anyhow, I've actually seen these guys display stuff at comicons before, and they do look really cool.

I'm just going by what he said
He said he did it himself
Yet, on the site, it says multiple people worked on it.
Also I'm not trying to look "cool" someone brought the suit up in another thread and it reminded me of this thread.

Yes, but when the site's in his profile, it's easy enough for anyone to just go there and check it out. You're back pedalling now, trying to say that he tried to take ALL the credit for it..;. but the fact is that he had a link to that site and you never ONCE associated him with that site.
Admit that you had no idea that it was his site and that you thought you were really catching someone in some big lie; because that's exactly what happened.
Other than that, I don't care, you still made yourself out to be a laughable wet blanket.

And on TOP of that, his is the ONLY name on that site; I think you're confused when he says things like "our costumes" on there and stuff, because he's saying that stuff in order to make it look like it's a bigger company; a very common practice... it's not like there's a staff of 50 people or something, which is why the site is registered to "David Pea" (which is Toronto Spawn's real name, I assume.)
Anyhow, again, you got confused, and I'm sorry, but you also got caught trying to "expose" someone for something they actually did, so just drop it.

Anybody can come out of nowhere and throw a site in their profile say it's their's just as easy as someone can take photos from myspace and say that's their girlfriend of boyfriend. Don't believe everything you see or everything somebody says.
I'm not back back pedalling either. If you'd bother to look for the thread that I mentioned you'll see that that was what I stated to begin with. Not once in this thread did he say we, our or us.

You don't get it. What Im saying is that you had NO IDEA that he was involved in the making of the costume AT ALL, so you tried to make him look like an ass. And now that you know the difference you're trying to cover up the fact that you were deliberately being a jerk and trying to "out" someone.

Hello everyone,
First let me say sorry that I havent posted here in a long time. I received an email from Orbits regarding this thread and have just read through it all. Just so no one thinks I read that above and conveniently added it here, here's the email:
I'm just curious to know if anyone from Universal Designs posted this topic on the Spawn.com message boards
http://board.spawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=236100
If so, please come and clear things up. My username is Orbits
If not, Then if you wouldn't mind can you please give me the story behind the Spawn Costume?
Who All Worked On it?
How Long Did It Take?
When Was It Completed?
Etc.
Just a short story with some key information.
I find it amusing honestly because I thought I did that earlier on in this thread.
Yes, I am David Pea and yes I run Universal Designs. The timing for this email was also perfect as my computer crashed about 3 weeks ago and have been without one for nearly all that time, until this morning.
When I use words like we it's because I'm not the only one working on the costumes. I do all the sculpting myself, unless otherwise stated on my website like in the case of the DragonBall Z costume or some other items that also are clearly stated in there. The mold work however usually involves others too. I'm not going to justify my use of simple choice words like 'me' or 'us'...but when there have been others working with me on any given project it's common to just say US. If nothing more then just out of respect for my helpers.
I posted here as a fan of SPAWN..not as a costume making company and I believe I even stated that over a year ago when I was asked for other costume images of my work. It wasnt my desire to post here to sell anything but again, just to share the work done with my SPAWN movie suit because after all this is a SPAWN message board.
All the details regarding my costume are on my website. It's all there. I have absolutely nothing to hide. Skepticism is fine, it is the internet after all, but dragging this thread up after all that time just to make me out to be a liar is rather bad form. I'm not on the message boards a whole lot...I run a business and have a family so I dont have a lot of time for this sort of thing but at the same time, I do enjoy it from time to time and I think it's great that fans of whatever film or character have a place they can all meet and chat about it...but nit picking this way isn't needed.
All the sculpture work on the SPAWN suit was done by me. The mold work was done with several others at my side and I'm pretty sure that some of the trimming work on the rubber suit once out of the mold was done as a group effort too.
Back then, I'm guessing it was about 4 years ago...maybe even 5, I'm honestly not sure but we used to have some down time between projects and that down time allowed us to work on things that I felt passionate about. I'm a huge SPAWN fan, loved the movie, loved the suit and love the character. Michael Jai White was very kind and great to meet in person. I look forward to a sequel if that day ever comes.
For the record, again....I dont post as Universal Designs, I post as a fan of SPAWN and as a fan of these characters in general. The SPAWN suit is not for sale and I'm not looking to confuse my time on the boards as Toronto SPAWN with my day job. I'm just a guy who digs costumes and loves SPAWN.....just like the rest of you here.
I do hope all this makes sense and clears this up. A guy who makes costumes for a living can still post on message boards without having to justify his day job, when you really look at it, no one's day job has anything to do with message board posts.
Peace to all.
David Pea.....
or....
Toronto SPAWN....and I post as DAVIDYR1 on most boards. That should clarify everything now. :)

I also want to note that I wasn't out to make you look bad.
I just think that if someone loves what someone else does or who they are, they should at least have enough respect for that person to not go around claiming to be them or claiming their work as their own. I know that that isn't always the case and some people are who they actually say they are. But as an Illustrator I've seen many try to pass someone elses work off as their own.

Even if Chappelle showed up himself as Tyrone I still wouldn't have given first place to that costume. I guess it just shows that pop culture popularity at a specific time can actually beat out something far superior.
And I'm not even a huge Spawn fan...your work simply kicks major bootay in the artistic "skills" department.

Well my best advice is if your brother in law is doing his own thing, he's probably going to learn much more and much faster doing it that way. He should be hitting the internet hard for info as it's readily available....and a great help for this sort of stuff.
I went to Ontario College of Art in 90 and 91..I think those were the 2 years. It was a 4 year program but I left after the second year...yup..that makes me a drop out but..in my defense, I didnt feel I was learning anything that I would be able to put towards a future career. Learning about historical artists is great, and I have all the respect in the world for them and all artists...but outside of a cultural education I didnt feel I was getting the hands on know how I believed I needed. I wanted to learn about sculpting, molding and basically costume making on a whole. In all honesty, that probably wasnt the proper college for my needs as it didnt have that particular focus so I left after the second year...moved to Italy and worked in the fashion industry and quickly picked up garment construction from pattern work to realizing the finished product. Nearly 8 years in Italy, then moved back to Toronto...started Universal Designs shortly after and now we do rubber suits, leather garments and some props.
In 1984 when I first started learning about latex, there was no internet...no real tutorials or books to read up on this stuff either. I learned by rolling up my sleeves and getting dirty. I still say that's the best way to learn, however we do have the internet now and it's a wealth of knowledge for this kind of thing. I wonder how my life would be today if the internet existed in the 80's....
Anyhow...your brother in law should keep practicing...use the net....and get some handy step by step DVD's also. Costuming is fun and cool (I think it is :)) and anyone having fun with it should be encouraged to continue.

He's gearing up for a huge zombie party tonight, will post some of his pics. Thanks for the advice, I'd love to get him jazzed up again about something he loves so much. Wish he'd do more of it. You should hear him speak when he's on a costume kick...such passion....

No...Tyrone. Shows how much of a Chappelle fan you are. ;)
Ups, thats right it was Tyrone Biggums... I was thinking in that character but wrote the name of the Tron Carter one. Both of them are hilarious though, but there is no way to compare that costume to the spawn one.

I suggest making it darker, the red was kinda too bright for the costume, any other details to make it appear organic and etc.
