I recommend what Lord Magneto says here, as well. I have a wireless router, but I usually choose to go with a direct connection, since I don't want to spare any bandwidth. In some games, that drop in speed can be the difference between living and dying. :D

I'm totally new to Xbox LIVE and it doesn't seem to make it very easy for first timers to understand. I THOUGHT I had an online match set up and after we picked teams and got past the coin flip, it said the connection was lost with the host... now I can't get back to play anyone online. there's a ton of people saying "invite me!" but when I try nothing happens

Sound slike you've got it hookedup to live...it might be your wireless connection...

go into the 360 main menu... go to the market Place option and download some demos...or videos...if that works you're connected...

try downloading some multiplayer demos (rainbowsix vegas) and see if you can get those working...

yeah, i'm connected to it but I just can't seem to maintain a connection in game. I've been able to download the Madden throwback jerseys and such. it's just that when i try to get an online game going, the connection drops at the same spot (where it starts to introduce players.) it could be the other person dropping out I suppose. It just seems odd that it's the same spot each time. Attempted 3 times with 3 diff opponents who all had 3 bars like me

could it have anything to do with large volume of activity due to Christm w/ peeps getting their new systems and everybody trying to get on?

Totally addicted to FIFA '07 ... got 3 separate "manager mode" seasons going.....Liverpool in the EPL, Dortmund in BundesLiga, and Lazio in Serie A. When I need a break from that I throw Viva Pinata in, but they really need to patch that game due to all of the glitches (game freezing and invisible garden items).
Got a couple of BB gift cards for Christmas, planning on getting the quick-charge kit, an extra battery pack and, for a game, I'm thinking Saint's Row - I enjoyed that quite a bit when I rented it.

La Liga is in the game, I just haven't started a season in that league yet. There are a ton of features missing in the 360 version that are in the last-gen versions though - cool new stuff like some fancy footwork moves, weather, more stadiums and leagues, etc...

I did actually see that price on Saint's Row, that's a great deal. I also saw that Need for Speed Carbon is the same price, so I've got to make a decision. I've played Saint's Row and I know I like it but I also enjoyed the NFS:Carbon demo. Anyone have NFS:Carbon, how is it?

It could be interference... you might want to change the channel your router is running on as cordless phones and other router could be messing thing up.

Also look at adjusting the antenas on the router and the wireless connector.

The "Lost connection to host" problem is more common... I've had it happen a couple of time now to myself and a buddy... neither of us can host games when we want to play each other.

In other 360 news I picked up Marvel Ultimate Alliance today for $40 :D Can't wait to start playing it.

And I'm definately game for an 18 rounder Wednesday night.

We usually buy for the kids for Xmas day and we do our shopping for eachother via the Boxing Day sales, with the exception of a couple of small gifts to open with the children. Anyway, she found time to sneak away and she got me Gears of War! I was going to pass on it for today as I just spent $450 with taxes for the system, and GRAW could have kept me busy for a while, but I'm stoked for Gears.

You can downlaod tons of free demos of games some are multiplayer as well... its a pretty sweet system...

I'd try calling Microsoft and explaining what happened. Give them receipt numbers, date of purchase, etc and show that your account hasn't been extended. Perhaps they can show that the code hasn't been activated, or something.

At any cost, just make a secondary account for now and use the free 30 days it creates, you get like 2 accounts per system to do that or something like that.

My wife gave me the XBOX LIVE Vision camera for Christmas, and I can't figure out how to take a snapshot of myself, so I can put my mug on my RSV character.

How do I take a pic? I can see the feed on my tv, but no "press __ to take picture/record" or something similar. I also didn't see anywhere to add my pic to the character on RSV. I haven't created one yet, so maybe that's why.

Finally was able to play two games of MAdden online tonight. My connection must not be stable enough to host or soemthing. But some guy and a buddy of mine both invited me to play and i went off without a hitch. I lost both games by a slim margin, but I must say that I'm startnig to understand why you guys dig this so much. It was GREAT fun.

Now I just have to find a way to look cool w/ my headset on so my wife will quit calling me a nerd ;)

As far as the card goes, that's happened to me before too on one of the 1600 points cards. I think my fiancee used a screwdriver or something and rubbed most of the numbers clean off. Microsoft was pretty useless over the phone, eventually we talked to a supervisor who wanted us to take pictures of the card and e-mail them to him which we did and after that they pretty much said there's nothing they could do because they didn't have a database for the card numbers (which seems actually ridiculous, each card has a serial number in addition to the code so they should have been able to look it up that way). Believe it or not though Target exchanged the card with no problem for a new one so give that a shot, call the store you bought it at first and explain what happened, I think it's actually pretty common with these cards.

yeah, I thought I had the free month, but maybe due to the fact that I set up my gamertag before I got my 360 so to use it I had to recover it. i think the system thinks I''m migrating an account or whatever and nullifies my free month... just a guess

The constant Viva Pinata freezes have been a flag to me, tonight I also went to play PGR3 for the first time in a long time and had major graphical glitches - looked like polygons out of place all over the screen, I looked that up on the xbox forums and basically was able to conclude that the GPU is overheating.
I had my "ring of death" about a week and a half ago, but after unplugging everything from the unit and the wall and putting it back I was able to still keep her going. I've also gone back and forth with the Nyko Intercooler. When I read about MS coming out against it I took it off and games were freezing more constantly so I put it back on. Tonight after the PGR3 scare I took it off again only to find it fairly loose and clearly scorched in the center. We'll see if they decide to repair it or not - the female end that the power cord plugs into on the 360 certainly looks to be burnt in the same area as the Intercooler, it's darker black there and they'll probably be able to tell that I was using the Intercooler and I've heard that it could void the warranty.

Alright, this is about the best I could do for a pic of the scorched Intercooler. I've got to say if you have any concerns that yours isn't properly installed, get it off now!!!! I thought mine was on okay but it was very loose when I went to remove it - don't know if I had a power surge (I do use a very nice surge protector) or if it worked itself loose or if I just didn't have it on good enough in the first place but be careful!

Is Live working okay tonight?

Live was acting a little funky for me towards the end of the night

I was able to throw down some mad ranked Uno games and some Madden, but then later on I tried to go online w/ Pocketbik Racer and later w/ Uno and neither would find a game

Really sorry to hear this. it's why i am afraid to play my 360 for very long. This is also the first i've heard of the intercooler being a bad idea can you be kind enough to fill me in. i just got my 360 on tuesday.

If you just bought a 360, you shouldn't need to worry about an intercooler or playing for a long time. Then newer 360's dont get as hot as long as they have room to breathe. My launch day 360 saw the ring of fire back in Nov, they sent me back a refurbished unit immediately, and it has worked flawlessly since. I wasn't crazy about not getting my original unit back, but I can't complain about the results.

The entire matchmaking system on Live was screwed last night. Many of us were hanging around & chatting with one another, all the while playing games we either haven't played in ages, or wouldn't play otherwise (DOA 4 was what I was playing, for example), all because we couldn't get our beloved Gears of War game going. :(

We finally did get on and going around 11pm PST, and it was good. Sadly, I didn't get to bed until almost 12:45am, and had to get up at 5:30am this morning. :D

After talking with Chugga during the Xbox Live "down time" last night, I realized 2 things:

1) I really need to start playing Oblivion (I've only owned it since October)...I'm a big fan of the true RPG games, and the Elder Scrolls series is as good as a paper & pencil RPGer is going to get. It's a shame I haven't started playing it. :(
2) I really need to start playing Rainbow Six: Vegas

the only issue i have with best buy and there "extended warrenty" is i bought one when i bought my PS2 many moons ago and about 6-7 months after i bought it it wouldn't read disks anymore when i brought it back they told me that the "extended warrenty" only covered the manufatuers warrenty so instead of sending it to sony i could just bring it back to best buy. Let me tell you that is the only time i yelled at a retail person (i did it for 3 years i know what it's like) i told the lady that that was a bunch of crap and that if she didn't replace my PS2 she could either refund my money or give me a new playstation or i was going to make the biggest scene she has ever seen in a store.....yeah she replaced it but told me the next time i return it i would have to buy a new one. sorry for the long read but thought i would share that hope your new xbox runs perfect

Thank you....yeah you have to be careful. When I was shopping around for my PS3 I almost went with one from Wal-Mart, until I called Wal-Mart and found out their warranties are through the manufacturer, not Wal-Mart. Always ask those important questions.

I basically made a Robin Hood clone in my Oblivion game. Good stealth/archer...that way I could make it through all of the guilds. Mages/Knights aren't all that great getting through both of the stealth guilds.

Now that I removed the Intercooler, my games won't go more than 20 minutes without freezing. Saint's Row and Viva Pinata freeze pretty consistently, NHL '07 and FIFA '07 aren't as bad but even FIFA froze on me this morning. If they do end up repairing it and shipping me a new unit can you see anything wrong with my setup?

Is there enough ventilation there in your opinion? To me it seems okay. It may be too close to heat sources - the TV, the receiver, the floor lamp, xbox surge protector, etc... but I'm not sure that's the problem. Obviously my current unit is fried anyways and I'm just waiting for the coffin to be shipped but when and if they send the new one do you think it's safe to keep it in this location? Is the power supply okay? It's off of the carpet on a little cardboard box.

Looks like you have the same tower I just bought...anyway, I think they systems are just faulty man. I've had mine out in the open, elevated, careful as hell the whole time with it, and it just started freezing.

I honestly don't think there's anything you can do to prevent the freezing if the system wants to freeze. Sucks, but evidently that's what happens.

damn man...i totally feel you... i had a big issue with BB a few months back with my ipod...they sent it out and lost it and gave me the run around for 2 months... in the long run after many many many calls to corporate and many visits in store i ended up swapping my 2 yr old crappy ipod for a 360 hahaha

Could having it sit upright like that affect the way it runs? I've heard some cases where that was a problem.

I believe I have almost every character unlocked except for Fury & Silver Surfer, with a great deal of the costumes unlocked. I didn't really dive too much into the comics missions yet, so I'd have a large part of those still, but I'm not convinced (as of right now) that the game is even worth a $40 purchase.

I always thought it was a rent at best. The game is repetative and it became old very quickly. I'd save the money for maybe that Lost Planet game coming out soon.

Anybody have problems saving with Call of Duty 3? I go to load the game and I always end up at the scene prior to paratrooping into France. I drove the jeep for the first time and got past that. It said it was saving. Plus, I played longer so it would save again in another spot. When I went to load again I was still back at the same spot. Any help? Thanks

Hey good game to all the boardmembers that showed up last night for Gears of War....I'm still savoring our hard fought 17-16 victory. Finally got the curb stomp achievement too. Now it's onto headshots.

The last game of the 16-16 tie was nerve racking though. All 6 of us pent up in that tiny hallway in Canals. I freakin grenade tagged Primebane and all it did was down him. Hey good game to all the boardmembers that showed up last night for Gears of War....I'm still savoring our hard fought 17-16 victory. Finally got the curb stomp achievement too. Now it's onto headshots.

That was (IMO) as excellent match. I was on the losing team, but I thought it was one of the more see-saw battles I've been involved in. It sure beats an 18-0 blowout (Even if you and I were on the 18-wins side). I had gotten the curb stomb the night before, when we played in War Machine. I had something like 23 kills and 22 downs when were playing at Canals. I couldn't believe how many downs I had gotten!! My latest target for achievement has become the chainsaw, since I loathe the inconsistency of killing with it. Sometimes getting shot does take the chainsaw down (Like it is supposed to), but other times, not even a pointblank shotgun blast will stop the other player from being Leatherface.

We can go either way on Gears. We've just been doing the games ranked lately, because we want to work towards the achievements. When we're playing, though, our attitudes toward one another don't change just because it's ranked. I don't give a damn about a so-called ranking, I just care that we're playing with guys we know, rather than the random clowns that usually litter ranked matches. :rolleyes:

Man, people can sure suck sometimes. I am playing gears, in a "friendly" game. The first two rounds I didn't do so well, so I got waxed pretty quick. Then, I figure out what the other team is doing. I tell my teammates, and we take cover right where they are coming through, and we dust all 4 of them. The next round, the guy who I guess was the host rushes me, and I get lucky and get my chainsaw up. Not 5 seconds after I split his face, I get a message saying the host has removed me from the game. Why play if you are afraid of getting killed? Sorry, just had to vent.

None of us actually take the ranked games seriously anyways. They are basically player matches that we've moved over to the ranked part. We get an unranked game going then when we realize we've got 8 people on who aren't d*****bags we move over to play ranked games. I mean if all 8 of us are going to be on for another hour+ why not get some statistical credit for all the killing we are doing?

It also gets us away from having to deal with idiots who would rather spend the entire match trying to get the boomshot or hammer of dawn to work just so they can get 100 kills with it. Everyone really plays to win regardless of skill level thats why we often times come out with close matches like the 17-16 we just had or the 18-16 a day or so before hand.

It's one of those games that you can really only get better in through experience. I played through the entire campaign on insane thinking I would be battle tested and I got owned. Then I started playing with boardies and got some good practice in. Some of my practice was a little obnoxious....sorry for that grenade week. At least I rarely use them now. But best part of playing online is if you get 0 kills you won't have a 12 year old idiot in your ear calling you a noob, and if you get 30 kills....well good for you....I'm impressed.

Indeed. It was cool to broaden the horizons a bit more with regards to playing with fellow boardmembers. Sorry for my "whining" in the 2nd game, but we had discussed making sure the teams were balanced, and they ended up anything but. In the future, it is imperative we make sure we don't have 4 dominant guys on 1 team, and then have the 2nd team be a group of guys learning the game, or guys who don't communicate. I think you and I communicated well, but the other 2 didn't follow a gameplan. :mad:

So, will I be missing out on a New Years' game session? It sucks being here at work. In my defense, though, with the Sabres and Michigan playing today, I'd be missing a good chunk of the afternoon, anyway.

Yeah I really like that stage though, tons of cover, makes you think about every move you make....corners are deadly in that game and theres so many of them. But anyways you did pretty damn good today led the team in kills for a while.

Glad you finally see how bad Gridlock is Chugga - I think I mentioned it the only time I played with you guys.

Canals and Clocktower are my top 2, Canals by far being my favorite, with Tyro Station or whatever its called being a clear cut #3.

Personally in games like Rainbow Six I'm not huge on the multiplayer since it seems way too quick but the team objective stuff is fun as hell

It depends on the game... in Gears of War it's done right in the game when you're in the multiplayer menu. Instead of signing on a profile it says "Sign on Guest".

Rainbow Six: Vegas' adversarial modes leave a bit to be desired, at least if it is straight-up survival or sharpshooter. I don't like the "hide until you heal" concept---it's kind of arcadey. However, I think the objective-based games could be fun. Also, I think the co-op terrorist hunts could be a blast, too. Those are 4 player maximum. The adversarial modes (I believe) are 16 player maximum. Now, if we can just get people to jump on board with that $39.99 price tag...... :D

Yeah I know that annoys me to no end. Yesterday oaktown was hosting a match and I got paired up with a friend of mine and 2 guys split screening so only one had a mic and supposedly his was broken. Literally 2 seconds into every single map half to 3/4s of my team is gone. So I'm frantically yelling out "we are up top make them come to us, take a good defensive position". All 3 of them go running down the stairs like mad men all dying to shotgun/grenade blasts. Thats when I just started picking up grenades and going desperation....I know oaktown called me on it but I couldn't take it anymore with the team I got stuck with. I was so highly frustrated between Josh telling him listening to Bon Jovi put him at a new level while playing Gears of War (only to die at the end of his sentence) and neither of them saying a word and playing like this game was Halo 2.5 or something.

I would just prefer to play with you guys since there is no pressure to be perfect, but mostly because it seems like you guys mostly are about talking and planning strategy and organization. I can perform much better in that scenario than an "every man for himself" mode

I was only really incensed last night at the 5 second down rule (Because it made it a shotgun frenzy---EVERY round), and the lack of communication in getting a 2nd game set up. I nearly signed off before the 2nd 18 rounder started due to no one talking to one another about what was going on. Thankfully I didn't, otherwise I wouldn't have gotten those whopping 10 more gamer points due to the chainsaw kills. ;) :D

I am serious about the R6, though. I still want to play Gears, but we need to have variety. We've had far too much conflict and strife with our games lately. We need to keep the aura of "friendly" games, especially since we are such a pillar of light here on the boards. :D :D :D

my beef is, im tired of listening to people complain about the lag, of "i shot him first" syndrome. Everyone has somewhat of a lag, even if its not noticable. But to use that as an excuse EVERYTIME you get killed just gets a little old.

That's why you always see me using the Lancer or the grenades. Lag isn't really a factor with those weapons. I can't kill anybody with the shotgun. I'm starting to use it more now that everybody keeps killing me with it.

I've given up aiming with the shotgun ...i also cant seem to hit anyone with it when im hiding behind a pillar and someone walks up and i try and blastem... im just horrible with it...

I haven't been on live in a while. I'll accept it next time I'm on. I never bought the headset so I haven't played much.

Plus, I have to unhook a cable from my PC and move it all of 6 feet to plug it into my 360 - it'll be a while.

I agree with you, dude---I hate having to hear that all the time. Hell, I try not to use it. I do whine sometimes when I get killed, but mostly because I just shot someone from the same distance that they did, but instead of them exploding, they get a minor flesh wound, and I blow to pieces. And I'm not even saying the other guy aimed for the head, or anything, he merely pulled the trigger on a blind shot, just as I did (Not Left Trigger aim).

And as for the lag---the host doesn't have lag. I get some hiccups here and there while playing in others' games, but when I host, there is no lag. You had to notice it at least somewhat while hosting last night, no?

My cry for R6 is mostly motivated by not having a game I paid for on release day just sitting there and collecting dust, followed closely by the need to "mix it up". :D

Lag is part of the game...hell in the grand spectrum of things I'm out in east bum**** whenever anyone hosts. It's either all the way across the entire freakin country or all the way south down the coast. I'm hit with lag every night and it's frustrating. I don't go to sleep every night crying but when I know I've got someones number and then get blown to chunks from 50 feet away I can't help but to enter the lobby in a foul mood.

But with that being said I don't even think I'm vocal all that much when I die...I was just vocal last night because the game we played absolutely blew. The thing about cross country lag in Gears of War is there are steps around it. If I'm getting hit hard by the lag monster then I'm going grenades and I'm going often. Or maybe I'll try to create distance and use the lancer....or worst comes to worst I'll hunt down the boom shot and cross my fingers. Last night was like "The Perfect Storm". I was playing on a 1-2 bar connection, you'd die if you went for grenades, there was no boom shot, lag+shotgun=broken, and the lancer was rendered completely useless by 5 second downs....there was literally nothing I could do to help my team and ontop of that people were just straight up charging and I had no defense for that what-so-ever. I'll admit I was whining like a 5 year old last night but my complaining had absolutely nothing to do with my connection, I've gotten used to a bit of skipping over the last month, just the game, my god I can't get it out of my head.

Back to Gears... how the hell do you get the perfect reloads? I mean how do you hit the reload button when you have your finger on the trigger? I haven't been able to figure out an easy way to do it yet. :(

Reload when YOU want to...not when your gun wants to. I rarely if ever shoot through an entire clip of ammo and then get caught with an unexpected reload. When you don't realize the reload is coming it can be somewhat difficult to get the perfect active reload. But when you know you're reloading it's simple. Take your shots, don't be afraid to get back behind cover and reload. Even if you've only wasted 2-3 shots always reload. You always want to go into every single encounter with a full clip because you never know if those 2-3 bullets you didn't bother to reload are the 2-3 bullets that will do your opposition in. I can't count the amount of times I'm yelling "reload, reload" in the lobby after I've died and the last guy left for our team empties out 3/4ths of an entire clip but doesn't reload because he's not completely out of bullets yet.

So lesson #1 for today....reload under your own conditions.

Do you want to get the 5 in a row? Just go to singleplayer take out the lancer (easiest to reload) go to a place that has absolutely no enemies, shoot 1 bullet, reload, shoot 1 bullet, reload, shoot 1 bullet, reload. Just take your time, you should get it quick enough.

Is it normal for the 360 to make circular scratches around the disk? It does that to all my games.

As much as I love the Xbox360 this is getting downright ridiculous. Looks like I've officially burned through my 3rd Xbox and tomorrow I'll be going out to get my 4th. I try to sign on to Gears tonight only to be greeted by red lights. I've never had a system this bad before. Both of my NES systems still work to this day but within a years time I've gone through 3 Xbox360s.
