Confirming everyone's suspicions, God of War 2 is officially in development, with a release date purportedly set for next February. It's a little surprising that it'll still be on the PS2 though...
Kratos is back, and this time its personal! The new issue of Game Informer confirms rumors that Kratos will return to Sony's current-generation console. Kratos returns to the PS2 in the sequel to God of War. Hinted at in the first God of War manual, this sequel by Sony Computer Entertainment Santa Monica and director David Jaffe continues the dark and brutal legeacy established by the awe-inspiring original.

Last month, rumors spread that God of War was getting a sequel. The source of the scuttlebutt was a report on Eurogamer.net (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=63230), which cited leaked Sony Computer Entertainment Europe marketing materials that revealed the untitled follow-up to the now-budget-priced actioner would be released in the US next February.
God of War 2 for PS2, not PS3

A leaked Sony marketing document reveals new details about the forthcoming God of War sequel, tentatively titled God of War 2. The leaked information claims that, the game is currently scheduled for a February 2007 release on the PlayStation 2.

The sequel will build upon the successful elements of the first game. This time around, Kratos will be able to ride Pegasus, sport the Golden Fleece, and even obtain Icarus' wings of wax and hubris. According to the marketing document, God of War 2 will sport next-genish visuals.

Though it seems odd that Sony would release the title on the PS2, with over 100 million PS2 consoles in circulation, the answer should be clear. No doubt, the 3rd sequel will make it’s next gen debut on the PS3.

Though for Sony to support a PS2 title into 2007 makes you wonder about the PS3 launch window and perhaps more importantly their commitment to the PS3.

However, the marketing materials allegedly said that, like God of War, its sequel would be released for the PlayStation 2. Though the first game's current-generation graphics wowed critics, the Eurogamer.net report dashed hopes that the series might debut on the PlayStation 3, which sports a much beefier GPU.

When the article (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=63011)--which was removed under legal threat from SCEA--broke, Sony Computer Entertainment America reps dismissed it as "rumor and speculation." However, this week, anyone who has seen a copy of Game Informer (http://www.gameinformer.com/Magazine/) magazine now knows that God of War 2 is indeed in the works. On its cover, the new issue of the Minnesota-based monthly proclaims that "Kratos returns to the PlayStation 2."

Since its release in March 2005, God of War has received many awards, including 7 top honors at the 9th Annual 2006 Interactive Achievement Awards and GameSpot's PlayStation 2 Game of the Year prize.

Overview:
The sequel to the hit PS2 game God Of War features Kratos in his new role as the God of War. He is to go up against the 3 Moirae or Sisters of Fate: Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. He is trying to accomplish what no man or God has ever done before. He is to go back to the time before he was betrayed by the Gods and change his destiny. In God of War II, the player picks up right where they were left from God of War.


Key Features:
Huge Collection of Combat Moves: Players can utilize their favorite combo attacks from GOD OF WAR along with a whole new set of moves and magic. Magic is based on nature’s elements which include utilizing the power if wind, ice and much more.
New Characters: From the popular Cyclops and Cerebus to the Flying Gryphon and more, players will encounter some of the greatest Greek mythological beasts, along with more enemies and bosses.

Put in the Demo Disc that comes with each issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine and on the main page (Where you may choose from "Extra", "Playground" and "Inside the Game" push in all FIVE buttons on the neck of the Guitar Hero SG Guitar Controller and the trailer will start. Barbarian King -
The same barbarian that was seen in God of War, in which Kratos called for Ares' help, well he has resurrected and is back ready to kick your butt. At the moment the only thing that is known is that he will absorb the souls of his minions, the Barbarian King then grows to immense proportions.

That's right. Medusa's uglier, fatter and malefic sister is here and she doesn't look very happy. The demo that was playable at E3 led you all the way up until this boss. However, the demo ended as you watch the cut-scene with her. :( Is she going to be the next most talked about God of War boss like the Minotaur? Who knows?

Minotaurs -
Not much is known about these monsters been bosses or just minions. The only info we have at the moment is that they are in the game, and they look more hideous than their smaller size cousins from God of War.

Yeah, that part was damn hard. That was the breaking point for my roommate. He couldn't get up that thing no matter how hard he tried. So he never finished it.

I read about GOW2 in that GI. Looks like I shouldn't have sold my ps2 when I upgraded to a 360...

i was kinda disapointed in pandoras box as well. I was kind of looking for some magical upgrade or something.

GoW is an excellent game. IMO, it is one of the best games that has been released on the PS2 to date. While I think some people have overstated its place in gaming history (Claiming it is the best game of all time, one of the Top 10 ever...must like the GTA games), there is no denying it brings something that all games should: FUN. The game is just plain fun. The graphics are good, but not the primary objective in this game. Great gameplay is, and as such, the game is as fun as I have had in some time when I played it. Anyone who owns a PS2 should give this game a whirl.

That being said, news of a sequel is great news. I hope that the gamers who supported this game on the PS2 get a chance to play its sequel on the PS2, as well. I think the game would be good looking on the PS3, but the same great gameplay cna be achieved on the PS2. Plus, it would be a nice reward to the gaming community who played it on PS2 before the inevitable jump to so-called "next gen" gaming. This is the same feeling I have towards rumors that the next Zelda installment might be moved from the Gamecube to the Revolution.

I think when Kratos opened the box and then grew to the same size as Ares, that counted as a pretty big magical upgrade. The fight was still hard as hell, but it would have been impossible if Kratos had stayed the same size.

Really psyched about this report. GoW is one of the best games I've ever played. It had this great and unique combination that no other game has offered.
The spinning spikes part didn't really bother me, but the part that really frustrated the hell out of me was the one part where you had to clear the entire room before the floor gave out. I did that part at least 25 times before finally getting it. Also finding the syrens in the desert was a real *****.

[UPDATE] March 21, 2006 – At the 2006 Game Developers Conference (GDC), Sony started off the conference with the God of War II: Divine Retribution (officially announced) trailer. The trailer shows what Kratos is known for doing what he does best - fighting, slicing, and ripping his opponents to shreds.

I decided to pick up GOW at best buy last week for $20, using my gift card I've had for the last two years. Best perchase ever. I beat the game last, playing it for hours for the past 3 days. Just wow. I love the puzzles, and I like how the aqua part of the level at the temple was caputered and given this watery feel to it, even the sound of the aqua level was well done. I felt very comfortable and claustrophobic at the same time. After playing and beating God of war last week, I now have an interest in Greek Mythology gods and want to learn more about them.

One thing I hated was the armored bull boss fight due to the fact that i could never twirl the control precisely and/or quickly as shown on the screen. Funny thing is when i first fought the bull, I knew what to do then on, but the 2nd time when it came to do the analog stick twirling, I did not realized I had to twirl the left stick, so i ended up twirling the right stick which was not working.So the whole time like an imbecile noobish idiot that I was, screaming at the tv and throwing the controller, thinking it was not working, to which I finally realized my mistake. :D

And now I look forward to GOW 2, but I will wait for it to become greatest hit at a cheaper price.

I agree with every positive comment in this thread, I was anxious to play GoW when I first, only reason I kept my dustgatherin PS2. It is easily the greatest game ever!! controlling Kratos made you trully feel like a brutal warrior. As for the thoughts that this could even become a DMC2 fiasco, I say highly unlikely, just look at the brillian screen shots video and story premise that is on their official site. GoW2 the only reason I still have a PS2 gathering dust, my third one at that, since they finally only got the system right when they slimmed it down.

Xbox (360) the only console system to ever live up to the hype. I mean you get a two year service contract directly from the manufacturer, Microsoft, for a $50 and the option to extend. Now thats quality customer servce.

no they released a rushed system and when the original dvd drives fail on thousands of first run systems, they ignore it. And if you knew anything, you would know that Microsoft has worked to get hundreds of popular Xbox titles backwards compatible on the 360.

Just a heads up, for those who are interested in limited edition premium packages there will be a God of War II Special Collector's Edition. This collector's edition will probably be available as an EXCLUSIVE title at EB Games/GameStop and GameCrazy retailers when the game debuts in February 2007. I loved the Pandora's Box idea. Mostly because if it was just a magical upgrade, then many mortals would be able to defeat ares. But making him big made Kratos still have to use his physical strength, power and speed to defeat Ares. Which makes sense because the Gods chose Kratos as their champion, not just anybody.

And I still am a bit confused with the storyline for God of War 2. It says he is a more ruthless god than Ares ever was. Does this mean the other Gods try to dethrone him?? Also, he decides to go after the Fates to change his destiny and go back to when the Gods first abondoned him. I'm guessing this is when he first tried to jump off the cliff? Also, they seem to be ignoring the storylines with Kratos' brother and the whole Kratos/Zeus arc until GoW 3. I would definitly expect to see Kratos battling Zeus on the PS3 God of War 3 especially with the picture in God of War of Zeus battling a mortal in the future and then the Secret Revealed video.

In the June ‘06 issue of PSM it stated a review on some of the content that’s going to be featured on God of War II, soon a month later an August ’06 issue of PSM was released. According to an interview with God of War II’s game designer and director Cory Barlog in the PSM Aug. ‘06 issue regarding the possibility of more sex scene min-games was questioned. When asked about any sexual content mini-games in GoWII, he was mum about the whole thing but he hinted on some of the aspects that he is not going to back away from it. Although it isn't clear, the PSM June ’06 issue review of the game seems to conclude on some possibility of such content.

It’s not often – in fact, it’s almost never - that we play a game, let alone a sequel, this early on that feels so solid (it’s not due out until next spring). To that, we say that the developer’s mantra of sticking with what worked in the first game and going from there seems to be the right one. They’re not backing off of the mature content, either – not by a mile. They’re not going for actions or situations that would seem inappropriate to the game world, but they’re already finding themselves asking whether certain things might earn the game an Adults Only rating (it won’t; from what we’ve played, it’s a hard “M”).

Even tough the PS3 will be out by the time the game is released, we can honestly say that God of War II: Divine Retribution is going to turn plenty of heads when it hits next spring… for all the right reasons. It’s bigger, bloodier, and bursting with new ideas – and isn’t that just what you were hoping for from this sequel?

Cory Barlog: In the first game, it was done because we wanted to show that players what kind of character Kratos is. There are areas in this game where-if it fits-we'll totally put it in. I'm not going to shy away from it.

I'm resting assured right now that if a sex mini-game fits into a place, they'll put it there. David Jaffe himself has said, "if we reach a part of the game where one fits, it'll be there". So, you know it might wind up in there somewhere since they seem to be doing it for fun but I can't blame them. Besides, that kind of behavior in the game displays how men in the Greek age acted in the subject of sex. It suggests that they worked hard on getting the game to feel like it was in the old Greek age. If we can't find any cyclopes, harpies or minotaurs to slaughter in ancient Greece, then kill someone or have a lust-ful moment and make love to some women to get health orbs.

In a recent GameTrailers interview with God of War’s series creator David Jaffe, he talks about the upcoming God of War 3 game, which may be released on the Sony PlayStation 3. Although, it might seem that God of War 3 is in the works, he did state that Sony hasn't commissioned him for a sequel yet, so as of right now, nothing's been announced. He said he's designing it. He could also be designing a Twisted Metal 5, but that doesn't mean he'll make it. So, will there be a GOW3? Probably. Does the video confirm it? No... but it is still on the horizon... and there is no doubt that GOW2 will sell well, hopefully David makes this one as good as the first...

So here are my thoughts on the idea of a special edition...and this is a person who buys many games. I LOVE the idea of a special edition from a content standpoint. I love getting the extra content (behind the scenes stuff, deleted content, bonus game content, etc...) but I never understood why they needed a special edition to do this. For me I think ALL games should be special editions. Now I know that doesn't exactly make them special anymore, but who cares it is the content that matters not the moniker of "special". So with God of War 2 I want the release disc to be the special edition...so all of the extra content is available to everyone without the extra charge. As a gamer...I dig that kind of stuff.

The metal box idea is cool and it was something we discussed but in the end we ultimately felt that giving people the content in one edition of the game is a much greater service to the fans than a limited run special edition.

Kratos’ possible arsenal of Magic and Weapons:
The game starts with a battle as Athena brings life into the Colossus which attacks Kratos’ and at the same time Athena strips Kratos’ of his godly powers and he is left only with the Blades of Athena and Poseidon's Rage. As the story develops Kratos will acquire new powers and weapons. The following information may serve as Kratos’ possible arsenal in God of War 2.

For the magical panel spell elements, there are 4 slots with at least 3 levels of upgrade for each spell as well as the new attack/new functionality which are:


Ice – This spell is not Ice Gauntlets but a spell that allows for the following upgradeable abilities: Lvl 1 shotgun blast of ice shards, Lvl 2 ice orbs which act as an ice shield that surrounds Kratos and damages any enemies that come near and can use any other spell while equipped with the ice orbs and at lvl 3 a massive blizzard with a secondary effect of either a knock-back or frozen.

Wind – This IS NOT an alternative weapon but a spell which has the name bow in its name as everything has changed since the E3 demo of 2006 from the alpha phase to gold stage. This spell allows for the following upgradeable abilities: lvl 1 shoots supernatural wind arrows, lvl 2 is a charged whirlwind shot which will send multiple enemies into the sky and at lvl3 a massive tornado which will spin across the ground and rip enemies to shreds. You can actually see a tornado in some of the gameplay footage.
Thunder – This spell is from Kronos, Zeus' father and thunder element runs in the family’s blood and not much is known apart from that you can place 3 thunder blasts at one time and they will essentially tie an enemy or boss down and shock them.

Unknown – Possibly a trident, water, earth/nature spell or could be Poseidon's Rage which is no longer a thunder/electrical spell but may instead be a SHOCKWAVE. Poseidon's Rage, returning spell which has been re-designed and different upgrades but Wrath of Poseidon (O [circle button] spinning attack returns), is rumored to have earthquake attacks as Poseidon was known as the Earth-shaker when he struck his trident to the ground, he commanded earthquakes and tidal waves.

It's debatable due to the fact that the development team wanted to do an Atlantis level so it would be safe to assume that there will be a trident weapon or water (Tidal wave) spell but another element could be FIRE.

It's controversial because we already have ICE and Ice is a sub category primary element of water so it would be "trial and error" that the remaining element would have to be Earth or Nature but most probably 100% earth. For earth spell there might be a possibility to unleash Earthquakes or Fissures that opens up the ground and swallows enemies inside hence, crushing them and for Nature, there might be a possibility for summoning tree branches or roots which grab the enemy's arms and legs that allows for tearing apart or get swallowed into the ground.

Alternative weapons: There is a possible of 4 alternative weapons and the Blades of Athena or the Wind Bow ARE NOT alternative weapons.


The Blades of Athena "forged in the fires of Hades" which is the default. For alternate melee weapon, we have the Barbarian King's Hammer which is slow but powerful with spinning attacks and is a replacement for the Artemis’ blade. The Barbarian Hammer is rumored to have a sweeping electrical thunder/heat wave spell at lvl 2 and is incorporated with the returning "ARMY OF HADES" spell at lvl 3 summons dead souls.
Rumored to be a water trident to summon tidal waves and earthquakes and let Kratos swim underwater. The development team and Cory Barlog stated that they did an Atlantis level where you would possibly fight Poseidon and take his trident.
The game states that you will be fighting new gods, as well as titans and Kronos is a titan so the third weapon is possibly from a new god. There is a boss fight with the Goddess of Heart.
The Sword of Olympus, not much is known about this weapon either in its effects or role in the game but in order to power-it up, you will need to sacrifice red orbs and *one magic spell* Poseidon's Rage.


Other extras on GOW2 which are mostly relics that are going to be acquired in the game such as Euryale's Head, the Amulet of Fate that slows down time when activated near a statue of the fates and there is a small, yellow bat which appears when a relic is activated. The Wings of Icarus allows for hovering for a few seconds, more of a double jump feature. The Golden Fleece allows parry and the Helmet of Hades gives invisibility for short period of time.

Kratos takes Icarus Wings:
From the looks of it, the Icarus fight looks like it'll be a freefall battle...... Maybe it's in some relation to the griffon fights to get to him first? In Greek mythology the Icarus story had Icarus with wax wings, and he flew too close to the sun, the wings melted, and he fell to his death.... in the game you'll probably chase him while riding on the Pegasus or something until he can no longer fly, and then battle him on the way down through the famous cut-scene button pressing or something, and then take the wings and float to safety in some sort of way. That's what I'm guessing....

At any rate, I'm thinking those Icarus wings are going to be very useful for platforming, and hopefully for combat like some kind of dive-bomb attack or something.

TITAN MODE! I can’t freaking believe this as if God of War on god mode wasn’t hard enough they are actually making a titan mode for God of War 2. Well let’s see I beat god mode, so I think I’m ready for God of War 2. I guess I have to suck it up as if God mode was *NEXT* to impossible, watch my analogs melt and buttons collapse -mobile-agile-hostile smoke ‘em.

Cory Barlog has stated in an interview (http://media.ps2.ign.com/media/811/811719/vids_1.html) that you get to keep everything you've collected from a previous playthrough. The interview is found on IGN. Its probably much more challenging but I find it very boring to have to upgrade all of your weapons again from scratch, in my opinion this would increase the replay value of GOW2 because I just love to go back and play a game after I've earned all the weapons and upgrades and just bully the enemies that gave me a hard time during my first playthrough.

Rage of the Gods is replaced by Rage of the Titans in God of War II?
In God of War II, Athena has striped Kratos from his godly powers as many of you have seen in the GOW2 demo where he battles the Colossus. Therefore, Kratos is still a powerful warrior he has become a mortal again and may not have the full support of the gods which means that he will acquire other powers as well as weapons from other sources during his quest. So, in conclusion the Rage of the Gods might not be used in GOW2 but instead will be replaced by Rage of the Titans which was mentioned in the March 2007 EGM magazine issue #213. Although, the full potential of the Rage of the Titans power-up was not fully disclosed but was only hinted by Cory Barlog in the interview. The ability of Rage of the Gods was only used if the Rage of the Gods meter was full which granted Kratos temporary invincibility. I assume that the Rage of the Titans will work in a similar way but it is unknown of what granted power will Kratos get from this.

This definitely makes sense, as I recall in God of War when Kratos acquired the Blade of Artemis, she mentions to him that she used it to slay a titan. Well since the titans are the enemies of the gods it seems that Kratos will get the help of the titans to defeat the gods because the gods turned on him and he will damn sure take care of that and bring Olympus to its knees.

On IGN they posted new screens that show Kratos on the Pegasus fighting gryphons. In one of the screens you see Kratos' stomach has a big scar. I don’t ever remember seeing this on him so it got me interested at how it happened and I couldn’t think of a good reason for it. Maybe he got into a fight with a god or something while he was with godly powers?

God Of War Heading To PSP?

Well, if it turns out to be true, it's just another reason to own a PSP. Can one of the PS2's greatest games appear on Sony's handheld in all its amazing glory? Look at the type of font used in "Coming Soon" on the image it's the God of War font for the upcoming title. But it does have Daxter screens in the background so I’m not too sure. Hopefully, if Ready At Dawn does make a God of War for the PSP it might be a prequel rather than a current continuation of the series, since they said they are going to announce an original title for the PSP. Presently, they've changed the font so it no longer looks like God of War. Maybe they felt they were tipping their hand too early, I don't know. Still, the way the blood color fills the graphic certainly points to some sort of bloodbath and not just another Daxter title. It would be nice to have a handheld version of GOW but I don’t know how well it will translate into the PSP since it lacks a second analog stick, as well as the two lower shoulder buttons.

Any one know a really good place to pick up these figures? I went to Amazing Toyz.com and there presold out of the one that I really wanted... and my only option is to get both for $24.99, or get the 13" and have to wait til Summer... what would you do? Vin Diesel IS that guy - he played one as Rid**** and could easily pull off Kratos - a bit of voice training (or just dubb out his voice if necessary) and it'd be all good -

Happens in the first level when the Colassus statue throws you the first time. You land in the hot springs, go to the right side and knock down the paper drapes and there are two naked chicks awaiting you. I only did it for the expseriance points, not to mention I couldn't have Kratos leave without a little fun :p

yeah ive been playing it on god mode with bonus play. playing as the black kratos with the gold tattoo with urns and all weapons maxxed out. It'sridiculously easy...but so fun just destroying everyone.

You can save up to ten spaces on your hard drive with God of War on your PS3. I haven't used a memory card on my brother's system. Just keep saving over the last level you played. unless you want to go back to that portion of the game later on. :cool:

I picked up God of War (PS2 Greatest HIits for $20) and am having massive amounts of fun.

I beat the first Hydra in the ship, but am having trouble with the trifecta on the deck.

I'm able to "kill" the one on the right, but the one on the left will come back to life in about 10 seconds.

Of course, I die while trying to slay the hydra on the left...so the center one remains untouched.

I may have missed it in the directions booklet, but is there a way to heal myself while in game?

The only way to heal yourself is with the green chests that are scattered about the game. And from what I remember, you battle the hydras on the left and right when their heads hit the deck, there should be boxes to climb up and onto their necks to finish them off. If you just knock them down to the deck they will recover if you leave them be.

Try to get it off the bay...I got a PS3 title for under $40 off of ebay...new and sealed and in english.

When thehead falls to the platform it should be near a section of boxes that you're able to climb up on. If there's a platform go for it if it gaines leverage against the beast. A Mini game should ensue in order to finish the Hydra off.

Vin was the first person i thought about if they decide to make this into a movie, loved his role as Rid****k, wish they would've made the Rid****k game into a movie, that would have been sweet. But yeah he'd be pretty good as Kratos. He would have to work on the voice though, although i think his would be allright, any actor (aside from the voice actor from the game) won't sound the same anyway.

I'm very excited about this:

Playing as Kratos before it all went bad. Seeing his relationship with his daughter and his wife in the apparent flashback scenes. The new storyline and his connection with Atlas. However, they need to stop ******* with me and get on with this God of War 3 storyline. The way the second ended, as powerful as it was, just left me hungry....starving in fact.

It will for sure be PSP game of the year!! Incredibly awesome game, and easily the best PSP game since MGS: PO. I played the demo and the kills are just as satisfying as its PS2 versions, and I haven’t played a great game on the PSP in quite a while. Even with games out like Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow, and GTA: Liberty City Stories as well as GTA: Vice City Stories, this game will still come out on top!

WOW! Any God of War fan needs to find a way to play this game. It doesn't have the epic feeling of Kratos vs. Zeus and the rest of the gods like the end of God of War/God of War 2 but the storyline is nuts, the boss battles are awesome and you learn so much to Kratos' character and why he is how he is in the first GoW. There is one part in particular involving him and his daughter that I won't spoil it but when you play it you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. Terrific!

yeah i died a little more than usual in this game. Not sure if it's the new controls or some of the enemies or more aggressive...especially those little bastards with the blades of fire that do like a 450 degree frontflip into you constantly.
