this is one of the largest threads i have seen. someone has probably mentioned this, but mcf should do some more anime figs.like ninja scroll and vampire hunter d figs to continue. were the first 2 lines failures? i thought they looked well made and well priced compared to other anime sculpts/model kits.

Due to the cost of licensing and the fact that Japan has its own very well developed and highly competitive collectible figure industry most likely means we won't be seeing this happening any time soon, if ever.

While I wouldn't call them complete failures, my impression was that they were just marginally successful. I can only speak judging from local conditions mind you. Around here, I still see figures from that line warming the pegs even to this day... But it could just be retailers trying to move old stock since anime is more popular today than it was back then, having penetrated the mainstream to a much wider degree...

Hypothetically speaking, if McF decided to do another anime line and he chose the licenses carefully, it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that they'd do better this time around.

I agree. Some of those license choices were pretty obscure from a general collectible consumer's standpoint, perhaps save for "Akira".

I think McF branched out a little too early, too quickly with the anime line. If he concentrated on the series or movies that were more well known to Western audiences, like concentrating on an "Akira" and/or a "Ghost In The Shell" line for example, he might have met with more success, fewer peg warmers, and we might have had a North American manufacturer of anime figures today.

Yeah, anime goods are expensive but unfortunately there's not much we can do about the differences in economies and the cost of importation. But prices and availability are a lot better than they were when I first got into anime, way back when it was very very obscure.

Anime has become a part of today's Western culture. Ask someone about anime chances are they've seen it or at least heard about it. Back when I got into it, virtually no one knew what it was! Anime was special back then. You'd show some anime to a non-anime fan audience and their reaction was always, "Holy sh_t! And this is a 'cartoon?!'" It's like they couldn't wrap their heads around the concept that animation could be for audiences other than children. :p

Oh, I'm not disputing the fact that there is a demand for anime figures. I'm saying is that it's unlikely to happen because it's not tenable from a business standpoint, at least as far as McF is concerned.

The collectible figure market is very dense in Japan. Japanese studios would have a high preference for local Japanese companies (understandably) when awarding licenses.

As well, the costs involved procuring licenses to produce figures is very high and lately there's been talk that McF has hit a bump in the road financially, so I don't see them shelling out big bucks for foreign licensing at the moment. That's why we're seeing McF shift focus to producing figures from their own properties or local properties.

I'm reading about McFarlane anime figures and I'd like to throw in my two cents. I don't know if this has been brought up, but McF Toys' nitty-gritty style (sculpting, paint) means most if not all anime figures can't be translated faithfully to 3D the McF way.

Anime is pretty much characterized by the clear-cut lines and clean shadows. Even in the most decadent of environments, there is a deep contrast between lights and shading. It's part of the appeal.

The only anime that comes to mind that breaks out of this mold is the Kill Bill sequence, which is done excellently in sketchy mode.

Just as an example, the Trigun figures are perfect renditions of anime in 3D. It's not just the design of the characters and the big eyes. It's the right amount of detail, enough wrinkles in the sculpt to make the figure interesting, but smooth enough otherwise to create the anime feel. The colors as far as I can tell are mixed in the plastic, and the shading is minimal, if not non-existent. And even though each part is is molded in one single color, the colors are unique to avoid making the figure look dull.

McF's anime lines looked like cartoony Movie Maniacs. The Manga Spawn lines relied too much on shading and hand-drawn detail. And the colors chosen were dull and faded.

I think to make true anime-styled figures would mean a thinking out, planning and training a completely different assembly line. Would be nice to have an affordable anime products, but so far we've been getting McF styled anime figures. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Good point, dodob. Every artist approaches the subject matter in their own way and brings some of their own perspective to the table and this is no different with McF sculptors.

You're right about the aesthetic differences in that line. In that sense, it seemed to me that the McF anime line had a much more experimental feel to it with the blending of sculpting styles and visual design. There was a bit of a Westernization in those figures and it's quite possible that it could have contributed to their marginal sales performance, along with the license choices.

Not knocking the skills of the sculptors, mind you. I'm sure their skills are such that if they set out to reproduce the "look n' feel" of 'authentic' anime characters, they could do it. In hindsight, I'm not sure that going experimental on a fledgling figure line based on an already established and recognizable visual design was such a good idea.

I've only watched up till Episode 6. I love it so far!

I can really identify with that show because back in my fan subbing days, I fell into a group of guys who not only acted like the members of Genshiken, but some of them even physically resembled the characters as well! In fact, one of the guys I met was a dead ringer for Madarame Harunobu!

I saw a bit of me in Sasahara Kanji's character. And I did have an experience similar to Sasahara's "hentai cabinet" escapade but I won't go there! :D

Although I don't think my behaviour has ever reached the level of otaku, still, I have to say that it's a little unnerving to see how close Genshiken came to portraying my own anime fan experience back then--- except sadly, we didn't have any busty girls like Kanako Ono join our group. ;)

The series struck a chord with me so I ordered Kanako Ono:

It's a shame that only 13 episodes are planned. It's understandable though. From what I've seen so far, Genshiken's plot and storytelling style doesn't really lend itself to another full season continuation. But one can hope!

Heh heh! 'Cool' is not the word I would have used. :D Looking back on it, I think from other people's perspectives, we were a creepy bunch. But at least we weren't hygienically challenged. :p

I'm glad affordable collectible PVC statues/figures are becoming more prevalent. Resin or vinyl figure kits would just drive me to bankruptcy.

Yeah, that's crap! There's no reason a store is entitled to that kind of information, even for the purposes of preventing mail fraud--- which, I assume, is their purpose for collecing it. I've ordered from U.S. retailers and I've yet to encounter one that asks for that level of personal information from Canadian or American customers.

The store's based in Canada and we have privacy laws concerning that sort of personal information. You might want to politely point out Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

While PIPEDA was drafted specifically to protect Canadians and our social insurance numbers (which is synonymous with your SSN's) it's not unreasonable to see how asking U.S. customers for their SSN's still violates the spirit of that Act, especially in light of our uniquely close trade relationship with the U.S..

we import and export on a daily basis and never do we need to have any information like what that website is asking for...I do know that if an export shipment is valued at over $5k we have to fill out some extra paperwork and include our Federal EIN number...

i feel the same chubs. im glad a lot of new people are posting since alot of the first few who started this thread dont post much. me mostly due to the fact i dont get on as i used to plus i hvant gotten anything anime related since Gungrave vol. 4. which by the way is getting better and better with each ep i watch. the SF figs are cool and i cant wait for series 2. but all ive got was vol 4 as i said and lots of batman stuff. got an extra Hush Batman and Catwoman to open plus i got the softcovers to the Hush books and the hardcover to Hush vol 2. then of course there are the many other books i bought and the animated series sets, and animated movies even a mini bust.

the reason why everyone keeps buying VS series 3 morrigan is cause you can connect her to the series 4 lillith. Where as the variant white morrigan and lillith don't have this option. Kinda sucks cause my friend has both of the white figures and she was pretty pissed.

lillith comes with an extra arm for morrigan that has a collar and leash that goes around lilliths neck I'll try and take a picture of mine.

$159 from the site i got the pic from. Not bad for a 90% complete resin kit. They do all the hard work and you get to enjoy it.

no, but it was the cheapest one i found on ebay. there was one that did have the extra arm but the guy selling it wanted $25 plus shipping for her. that too much money for this little fig imo.

i feel the same chubs. im glad a lot of new people are posting since alot of the first few who started this thread dont post much. me mostly due to the fact i dont get on as i used to plus i hvant gotten anything anime related since Gungrave vol. 4. which by the way is getting better and better with each ep i watch. the SF figs are cool and i cant wait for series 2. but all ive got was vol 4 as i said and lots of batman stuff. got an extra Hush Batman and Catwoman to open plus i got the softcovers to the Hush books and the hardcover to Hush vol 2. then of course there are the many other books i bought and the animated series sets, and animated movies even a mini bust.

Picked up another last week for a board member. Like i said, use a twist tie to hold her weapons on, and if you have access to them, pick up some 3 3/4 Chap Mei figures. Thei rifles are scaled for 6" figures, and work well on Deunan.

ive been meaning to pick up samurai champloo. all the dvds here at best buy have it packed with the soundtrack, but i dunno if i wanna start another anime yet. i think ill wait till after i finish Gungrave and R.O.D. the TV. the Gazelle figure rocks and ill put him on the wall next to Monev. as for now he is on my shelf looking sweet as ever. never did get a call about my comic, but ill wait till friday and see if this other shop has it. either way im still going cuz i have a lot of old bat books i wanna get.

Well, if you can score one at clearence prices, i would. $25 is steep for any 6"-9" figure, but Japanese ones consistantly go at that rate ( Virtual On, Ah! My Goddess, Evangelion.)


Like i said before, the only real flaws are the hand design and the upper arm swivel, which has a tendency to pop out. They used fubber in the arm joints for some unknown reason.

Get her, arm her up, and watch her kick Al Simmons Spawn's *** around the shelves!

AFAIK, a great deal of the movie is different from the manga. The whole thing with Deunan's mom was re-written for the movie. In the manga, Deunan's mom was only casually referred to, I think. She was a journalist who was murdered (hate crime) during the war.

Deunan's family situation wasn't the only thing they changed. IIRC, they reversed the situation in regards to the Bioroids and humans in the movie. In the manga, the Bioroid council wanted to elevate themselves to the master race and let the humans die out. Because of this plot, Gaia determined that the Bioroids posed a significant threat to the humans who she was programmed to serve and protect. In the manga, she uses the gun platforms to attack the Bioroid production facility in Olympus in an attempt to stop the production of future generations of Bioroids.

In the movie, the humans were made to be the threat so the movie's writers came up with the whole D-tank virus idea as a means for the antagonists to wipe out the human race. The virus never existed in the manga.

The animated Appleseed movie that was released back in 1988 was closer to the manga's plot than the 2004 version.

You may want to double check my data. It's been a long time since I've read the manga.

yea its been a while since we last talked like this. good ol times. yea brandon died in ep 14 DIE. Ep 16 LETTER is when Big Daddy gets a letter from brandon saying that he wants to be brought back if Harry goes out of control. Maria finds out Harry killed Bradon and goes to try to kill Harry, but Big Daddy stops her. so he goes up to kill harry only to have harry kill big daddy. the next dvd will start with the ep called Mika. i havnt seen the prices for the human inuyasha till now and i gotta say thats insane. i never did hear from toynami but animecastle.com still has it on pre-order. saying the Human Inuyasha figure will be rereleased on their site on the 20th of this month.

Monev was the only one i heard that was supposedly being rereleased sometime this year. Toynami hasnt updated there site since 12/17/04. but im pretty sure we'll end up seeing pics of them real soon. the hush superman is my fave superman figure. im still a lil bummed that the jim lee superman line has been put on hold for now. cuz i really wanted superman and wonder woman from the line. i wouldnt say batman from hush series 1 is hard to find cuz i see him popping up at comic stores here and there. plus they are rereleasing Hush series 1 and 2 again around the same time as series 3. so if you plan to buy one you wont have a hard time finding them. man chubs the more u keep talking about opening gazelle the more ur going to make me wanna open mine too.

chuubs & vegeta: The trailer that came out with the superbowl had the first ever shot of Scarecrow. He looks great. They are trying to make it as 'real' as possible, so no 'costume' really, so it seems like a guy just found a sack and threw it on his head. its pretty cool.

I just tossed those beach bases in a bag. The ladies went right into the fish tank with the rest of my gashapon/ trading figures. Unfortunately it's about full.

Ninja Scroll the Movie takes place sometime before the series. As far as I know, Ninja Scroll the Series has never been released in a boxset. I think you might have bought some Hong Kong bootlegs, especially for the price you paid. How much was it? Like $16, right? I know there is a boxset coming out in the Spring with a Jubei figure. Hope this helps.

I decided to take some teaser shot of my HUGE HAUL, which should all be here by the end of the week. Vash is from my local comic shop, I got him about 3 weeks ago. Rei & Asuka came early last week from E-bay. The 2 Evangelion gashapons were a gift from my boss's trip to Japan. The FLCL Haruko was an E-bay purchase too. I had no idea she would be this small though! She's no bigger than a gashapon but I still think she's great none-the-less. My favorite thing though is that huge Rei statue, another E-bay purchase. I love the head sculpt. The best likeness I've seen for a Rei statue or figure yet, IMO. Does anyone know where she is from? Like what series?

Mark Hello, I started watching the Ninja Scroll TV series and I am sooo hooked on it. I have only seen the first 4 but can not wait to see the rest. And it has 13 series on it. The graphics are not as good as the movie but the music rocks and it keeps u on the edge. So do u think I still got a bootleg? Becasue u said they do not sell the whole series togther yet??? It looks halfway authentic to me. Even the 2 CDs themselves.

thebootleg thing is a tough question... i usually assume that anything thats labeled 'region free' is a bootleg... a couple months back, i had one like that, where i just didnt have bootlegs on my mind, so i didnt think to check... after i bought it, i realized that that was probably what it was, and sure enough, i checked and it was 'region free'

so i like to always assume anything that is a good price (especially a box set) and 'region free'is almost always a bootleg

you cant really blame the guy for not putting the word 'bootleg' in the description, as i believe its against ebays rules to even sell the bootlegs...

I did a little bit of checking around & the boxset comes out in April & it's a 4 DVD set so it's pretty certain you got bootlegs. I would let him know for sure. I was in a samiliar situation a few summers ago. I bought Kenshin DVDs from a seller who claimed that they were authentic. After waiting a very long time to get them, they turned out to be bootleg copies he did. I e-mailed back & forth arguing to get my money back ($185). Eventually he stopped responding to my e-mails & I never got my money back. So that's been my rule for DVDs, never buy them off of E-bay from a individual seller.

I have that issue. "Magneto Triumphant" it's called. Damn Jim Lee should have stayed with X-Men, but no, he just had to do those second rate Wild Cats. :( :D

All Star Batman & Robin looks very promising. Story by Frank Miller, art by Jim Lee. Lee described it as a sequel to Miller's BATMAN: Year 1 storyline, designed to fit in even with The Dark Knight Returns & The Dark Knight Strikes Back.
