Background Info

The Ninja Gaiden (roughly translated "Ninja Side Story") game lineage stretches as far back to 1988. It first made its mark on the world as a stand-up arcade game and has since seen incarnations on no less than 13 different platforms. The latest version being brought to life on the Xbox in 2004, with a follow-up edition to be released soon, working title: "Ninja Gaiden Black." This line of 1/6th scale PVC statues from Kotobukiya is based on character designs seen in the 2004 Ninja Gaiden version.

In the game, you play as Ryu Hayabusa, a young member of the Hayabusa Ninja Clan, whose bloodline stems from a race of ancient beings who defeated the Evil Dieties during the age of ancient myth. As the inheritor of the Dragon Lineage, it's now Ryu's responsibility to combat evil wherever it rears its head. But the inhabitants of Ryu's village have been massacred, and now Ryu has returned with the ancient Dragon Sword to avenge their deaths and to stop the evil forces responsible but uncovers a far more deadly and sinister plot.

During Ryu's quest, he is aided by a young female ninja named Ayane, who passes along secret messages and items to help Ryu in his quest. Ayane was actually first introduced in the "Dead or Alive" fighting games and her presence in Ninja Gaiden is a cameo.

Ayane is a member of the Mugen Tenshin Ninja Clan. Born into the ruling family clan, she was raised in secrecy and trained in all the Ninja arts.

Review

Ayane, when mounted on the included base, stands about 11.5-inches tall. Her ninja outfit is detailed and wonderfully painted, from the leaf pattern to the individual rings and links of her armour. There's some spill-over where the small metal rings meet the cloth of the body suit, but overall, the painted detail is crisp and clean. Her lips are subtley shaded and her eyes are crisply painted and properly aligned, none of that "lazy eye" phenomenon going on.

Ayane is strictly a statue, so there's no articulation to review. Unfortunately, except for a rather bland stand with simulated wood grain (the striations on the base in the photo below), there are no accessories to review either. They could have at least included her trademark pinwheel-decorated throwing darts which she uses to pass messages to Ryu in the game.

Pros:

Collectors who are Ninja Gaiden fans have long clamored for figures, and now they have them. Though I think most wanted an action figure line, the quality in thisKotobukiya statue line should please most fans. It's this high quality that makes these statues a must-own for any Ninja Gaiden fan. Even if you aren't a fan of the game, you can still appreciate the quality. They'd look great in anyone's collection.
Large 1/6th scale makes a good sized figure for display, especially when combined with all the detail in the costume.
Very nicely painted. Definitely a quality job overall.
Out of the current selection of Ninja Gaiden statues (three characters so far), Ayane is easily the most visually striking due to the detail in her costume.
Ayane is packaged in a box that's windowed on three sides. What's cool is that the box is designed to allow you to package and re-package the figure easily. You have a choice to display Ayane mint-in-box, or out of the box in her full glory at whim.
She's cute.
Cons:

While you do get what you pay for, these statues are relatively expensive due to the high quality, large scale, and the fact that this is initially an imported product. I've seen Ayane listed on eBay for between $50 and $70.
No accessories! They could have at least included her throwing darts, a sword even... But instead, she comes with nada, zilch... And the base is pretty bland, though it does the job of keeping her upright with no lean.
Verdict:

Recommended! Though it's a bit pricey, the figure quality is top notch and is a great addition to anyone's collection, Ninja Gaiden fan or not.

But she's mine! ALL MINE! :D I'm just happy 'cuz I was sitting on the fence for four weeks on whether or not I should buy her. The owner of the store must've thought I was trying to shoplift something because I had been there a few times, handled the box but then put it back each time. :p I don't feel much buyer's regret at the moment but maybe that will come later. ;)

I was going to buy a resin figure kit initially but after factoring the exchange + S&H + brokerage fees and then requiring building supplies and enough time to build and paint it properly (school's on, time's short), this was pretty much the next best thing.

I do want to add a few things though--- a decent diorama base for one, perhaps some pinwheeled throwing darts. And I wouldn't mind scoring a Mononofu sixth scale sword to go with her too, although I can't recall if she ever used a sword in the game.
