The problem with the show is the promoter, Al Sinclair. This show has been on the decline every year for the past 5 I've been to. He won't try anything new,

the autograph guests have sucked for the most part, and he's just an idiot! This is why Mcfarlane won't ever bring an exclusive here! People won't go to the show, because of this idiot, and no people equals no exclusive! I have a gut feeling that TMP didn't come, because they felt it's a waste of time.

Time for Al to step down as show promoter, and let someone like Hersh Borenstein take it over. At least we'll have a decent autograph lineup! The Toronto Expo could be huge, if it was run properly! Hell, i didn't even go to this one, because the last few have sucked! :rolleyes:

And hey, nothing is stopping Hersh from running a show. There's a good six months between each Expo. Why not do one in February around the Olympic break? I'd love to see what Hersh could do with a big show because I know he's got a helluva mind fo rthe hobby.

I am passing fact (off the record fact) Bottom line Jon, is the attendance numbers at the Toronto Expo aren't big enough to chance an exclusive! That is from a TMP source! ;) Your right about the 500 boxes being an issue, that being they don't want to bring home 300 of them! If they set up down by the end where the signings are it seems to me there was tons of empty space back behind there! It could easily be done here. Toronto hockey fans are mental. A TMP exclusive would bring them to the show, don't you agree? I think it would be a huge success if done!

Hey guys I'm just getting back into collecting cards I just collected Patrick Roy cards for years and gave it up now Im going to collect Nash and Thornton cards and maybe some Crosby cards if I dont have to break the bank on them. Anyways I'm going to Ottawa next week to see U2 and Sens Vs. Boston, Can someone tell me some good places to get cards? I'll be staying at The Lord Elgin Hotel. Any help will be great thanks.

you know what turco / rocco , i too am in the same boat .
ive pretty much put to a close my collecting recently but i pick up a few things here and there.

it get harder when your a struggling student / slash designer / artist whatever and you got little money to pay bills / eat / put shoes on your feet and what not so enjoy it now while your young and live at home hahah .

and it does get crazy when they are doing 1 of 1s and **** like that it kinda takes the fun out of it for me when they make aebischer such a hard card to get , i mean **** i got almost all his cards up until the last couple years when they started making next to nothing of his and all of it was too pricey cause people just wanted it cause its short printed or whatever.
i mean the first three years aebischer played nobody cared that he was even alive. those were the days when you could get his cards for pennies on ebay , and i did .

oh well trends come and go but ill still pick up stuff i like here and there , when i can afford it .

You guys just need to take a step back from your collection and figure out what you really want/need. I'm more in the same boat as deadmanwalking. I don't have a bunch of money to spend on my Iginla stuff but I do get some extra cash here and there to buy his cards. And I try not to make a big deal over the ones that are numbered low. Does it piss me off the new Priority Signings Iginla is /10? It sure does, I'll probly never own that card or the /7 from the year before. But I'm just gonna go for the cards I CAN get and be happy with that. I've been saving up a little so I can buy some boxes this year cause of the big rookie crop. If I get lucky I can pull a Crosby or something big and sell it on ebay to make up the cash I need to buy some of those high priced Iggy's and if not then there is nothing else I can do.

i guess i just didn't get what i wanted. i know the notable numbers is probably my best pull ever (rarity wise) but i would've preferred a simple spezza GU jersey, or one of my other favorite players. perry is the only young gun i liked.

essentially - without the young guns that i wanted (crosby, phaneuf, carter) i probably should've bought the set and paid for a few of my favorite cards off the bay.

but that's what the crosby lottery will do to yah :rolleyes: :cool:

that being said, the set is pretty fantastic, there's a lot of other non-young gun rookie cards in there... pitkanen, bergeron, lethonen, auld (i think?)... i'm pretty happy with it.

i'm not sure if i'm brave (or foolish) enough to try another box for the crosby/phaneuf/et co. i might have better luck with the VLTs :D

-- A growing number of the Expo population are the hardcores, and the gamer market has been growing. That's a lot of the reason why Classic Collectibles keeps coming out. You asked about new things - I was merely pointing out something that was new.

-- I agree, eBay is killing the hobby dead. It's not just the Expo that's having problems. Every show, form the local high school shows to the big ones are losing ground. The only ones that are stable are FanFests. Hell, the National, which has the TMP exclusives and more corp. giveaways is decreasing in popularity.

As I said in my post, part of the problem is that the Expo, for the last 4-5 years, has been on weekends where there wasn't a Leafs game (or AHL for that matter). Hersh is able to bring guys into his store while they're through Toronto, particularly on layover road trips.

This is why I suggested a Turin-time show would be a hit. Think about how many star players will NOT be in Italy. You could do a helluva show then.

--- Could a TMP exclusive draw? Honestly, I'm not even sure anymore. Seems like TMP is coming back with more and more figures every show. I don't think anyone would fly in from out of town for one. Local pick-up? Maybe; but it would have to be someone on the level of Doug Gilmour.

What would attract would be if Todd made his way up to the Expo. Exclusive or no exclusive, Todd would draw a crowd. That was evidenced at the CFLPA logo unveiling in Calgary. If Todd can do the National, he can sure as hell do the Expo.

some of them are eligible for rookie of the year (lehtonen out of that list)

Gordie's been there at least twice in the last 5 years. He was there... I want to say for 01-02 Fall when ITG was re-launching Parkhurst, and he was there in Spring '04 signing copies of his book.

Cecil, I agree that the dealers coming in is a bit of a problem. While some rotate their stock, there's some that I keep seeing the same stuff over and over from. There's a couple BSB guys who I usually buy from because all they have is vintage (picked up T206 and Goudey samples for 6 bucks each), but overall they don't really have much to offer the "newer" collector.

I think everyone who wants to know knows about the fallout between Hersh and Al The card industry is full of interesting behind-the-scenes stuff. I'm sure we could all go on for hours about those stories.

those are tough to come by and they are expensive when they show up. I was lucky enough to catch one for a $60 BIN. About a week later another was listed and it went for $100+ I believe (or close to it)

Tim, Im not even too sure if you'd know the answer to this. But literally HOW MANY Turco cards are you missing still? I mean you gotta be gettin' down there now. You must have pretty much all base and inserts, as well as rookies, alotta higher numbered parallels...MANY, MANY GU and Auto's. The only things I can see you needing are the low numbered inserts and GU/Auto's...

$40 from a dink-wad at the mall here. I think I can get them for $30, but I was impatient, and wanted to try one. Nice stuff if you get a big gun! I wish they would do an NHL set like this! I'd go freakin nuts on these if they did! :eek: You also get 2 base cards, and a jersey card in the pack!

:) last time at the sunday market i pick up a pack of Upper deck power pay and pulled class A redemption :) witch includers crosby card. To day i went to the market and bought a couple of packs of 05-06 upper deck (first time this year) all i got was a stefan jersy card (**** all) with 4 packs left in the sellers box i said **** it and bought 2 packs that where on the bottom of case and all and behold I pulled crosbys young gun card:D wow it was just amazing and people around me where offering me $$$ as some traders opened 8 boxes and still have not pulled 1 :)

Very nice Cecil! :) How exactly do you know if it is a game-used stick? Is there some sort of way of telling like special markings etc? Jerseys have a special tag I would assume? I'd love to get a few items, but have always been leary of fake stuff.

Look for consistency of tape on the blade and knob. Name stamp also helps. But plenty of reliable sources out there... if you are looking for a particular stick, LMK and I'll see if I can help.

You almost couldn't ask for better swatches on a card. I mean one of them is 6 colours (at least it looks six), the other a 3 colour, and although the jersey is white you get a seem + mesh on it. Pretty much a PERFECT card!
