So how does SPx work? They have the auto'ed jerseys /1499 but then there are other non auto'ed ones out of /1999? And then the real RC's are /99? Is that right cause I'm totally confused so far.

Hey Shakes, I looked into one time and I could get an extra $20,000 but you have to have somebody appraise the collection. Unless you have alot of money then I suspect you can get whatever you want.

You can buy a fireproof safe from Walmart for $26, and it will hold 100+ cards! They have various sizes, and also have a fire/waterproof one available! They are a bit more. $65 or so! I have my best ones in one of those safes.

so i'm telling my g/f about the box of UD Ice i was gonna get, but just didn't think it was a good idea because of money and stuff. later on we're talking about saving money to move out, etc. and i say "well i'm not making sacrifices if you're not... i just gave up a box of cards i'm not spending it all on valentines day or anything else for fun" and she goes "well that doesn't really add up to much", "that box of card costs $100, don't tell me that's not a lot" ... "those cost $100??" ... me: "yeah, and i got a deal. so don't act like i'm not saving money by passing on those cards".


now i knew she didn't know exactly how much they cost, but i guess she thought it was like $50 a box or something... oh my. if she only knew. :eek:

I haven't been on this thread much but I have just recently got back into the card collecting thing. Plus it paid off today as brew has a card that I need and a deal has been struck. Anyways I try and build a few sets plus I collect a few FLames and have a couple projects on the go.

The first being I am looking for the 05/06 MVP gold cards for the FLames players except:

Plus this project. I am trying to get one of every swatch colour or combo that I can. I have a white lombardi GU and red iginla shooting stars on the way. If anyone comes across any lmk.

UD1 was very nice - great photography...
i did not like how MVP turned out - the cards without the auto's look much much nicer
Trilogy is kinda ok.
Black Diamond is always classy, but i don't like their GU cards. but a very simple design.

SPX looks like a trip back to 94-95.

i expect ICE to be beautiful (i hope to pick up a base set - and a phaneuf)
i hope the Game Used series (i forget exactly what it's called) turns out really nice too.

but definately - it's such a good year for cards - they really could've done more with less.

I've never really been interested in collecting them, and I certainly think i'm in the minority. I just don't feel that RC's have the same mystique that they once held, not when a guy has 20 different RC's. Now a Gretzky rookie, a choice of two companies... that's mystique.

I kind of feel that way too, Chris. I do however like to get select ones like Leaf players (Steen for example), and would love Ovechkin, and Crosby! The others don't really appeal to me much.

it's so true. two gretzky rookies (same freiken card!!)

how is it now that they "short print" the rookies, and they are worth more? great it's only numbered out of 10, 799, 1000, 1999, etc... guess what - there's like 20 different rookies of each guy.

i'm really only interested in the regular rookie of players i like, and black diamond ones because i consider them to be the higher end regular version. you won't see me flipping for the parallels or crazy memorabilia cards.

shortprinted rookies make me mad. while it should be fun to get a rookie (ie. not every pack) - it shouldn't be a chore to get one... 1 rookie per box? blech.

i vote for more rookie production - wouldn't it be nice to pull doubles of your favorite rookie? it's so unlikely now... i'd be inclined to buy more boxes if i had a better shot of getting the rookies i wanted.

In general, I'm looking for Moose GW cards and RCs. Also hunting down Jets alumni JSY cards (have 8 of 20 players I'm aware of already).

Got my box of MVP today. Big pull was a Cros. RC for the permanant collection. Other RCs I'm keeping are Leneveu, probably Parise. Pulled a Brule but might be trading for a Phaneuf. My JSY was Recchi, might keep it b/c of the cool design.

As for the RC debate, I'm gonna try get most of the Phaneuf's out there unless they are out of my reach price wise. Besides that, I like to get at least one RC of young players I like. So I'll still go for some players when the cards come out, mainly the Young Guns cause that's just the classic RC to get for me. And when I pull a decent RC I'll probly keep it.

considering that the first set of jerseys from both Edmonton and Philly only just started arriving at the doorsteps of those who pre-ordered the jerseys, it's quite likely.. The players wore the same white and black jerseys from the first day of pre-season until mid-December, and then they had to get processed and then shipped out.. I still don't have my Flames or Panthers jerseys yet. The third jerseys are still being worn too, so if there's a Forsberg card with an orange swatch, it's unlikely it's a jersey from any NHL game

That's why I don't really care about jersey cards. It's getting to the point where how do we even know what Upper Deck and other card companies are doing these days.

Since that fake Messier Stanley Cup patch, I've pretty much shrugged at jersey patches.. talking with the owner of Meigray, it's true, the card companies do buy jerseys from them, but they usually get the preseason shirts (up til this year, the teams used different jersey for preseason, and a brand new jersey in game 1 of the season.

Fishy is right, and for the price that you're paying for the box, the guarantee that McWilliams gives better be authentic, but as people are pointing out, it's not.

personally i'd just like to see the hobby go back to the days of 4 or 5 companies - and $4 packs, get some simple jersey cards in there like the UD1 or Beehive ones a while back, toss in a few autos, rookies that are readily available - and you've got a great set imo.

anyone know why UD went from the mail in Young Guns redemption set of like 10 cards, to a massive 20+ set and SP'd rookies in every set.... redemption cards like that were cool.

But with the abundance, they no longer have the drawing power they once did. High end GU products absolutely destroy lower end products. Now everyone thinks that they should get a three colour swatch or a patch, and cry if you get a full white swatch. I won't even get into UD Exquisite... what a waste that will be.

one jersey would make a lot of jersey cards... i don't know why the costs went up so much. i think it has to do with the licensing. (y'know, signing crosby to a million dollar deal :p)

i don't see any reason why i should have to pay more then $100cdn for a regular UD box.even 80 is pushing it.

i like regular plain jersey cards. i don't expect them to be worth $50-1000. if i get a multiswatch, great. if not, no biggie.


the hobby is a bit out of whack. i'd like to see it be more about fun then $ value (although i'm sure it's fun to pull a $1000 card... i liked it when pulling a $10 card was decent, and $50 was a big deal).
