Just won my first eBay auction in a while.

After pulling out half my hair in frustration over Nathan Smith and Ryan Kesler JSY cards, I decided to look elsewhere for some good swag and found this:

The card, natch, is the Teemu AS jersey. That now makes four different teemu JSY cards i have from four different sweaters - Jets, Avs, Ducks and World. Now all that's left (as far as i know) is Sharks and Western Conference AS. I don't know if there have been any Team Finland sweater cards.

I bought a pack of UD MVP today I know they arent the greatest but Im thinking about collecting them, cause i think they are cool. My question is whats the best way to go about it buy by the box, or by pack ??

If you buy a box you should get one jersey card. There is a couple of us working on sets, so you can get help here also. Boxes sell for about $35 - $40. (You'll need several.)

that's a GREAT idea. I've always done that. You always end up with so many extra cards and when you see a kids face light up when you give him a shoe box full of cards........:) man it's priceless.

Heck I had a guy wanting to sell me an Orr auto that I had 2 of the silver version(# to 125) of the card. I paid $90 US ( now see them selling at $120 ) and he had a high numbered bronze version. I offer him $60 US and it's too low. I think it's stuff like this that gets me fed up with collecting. Okay done my rant :o

lol hey i'm with you there - i don't think you should be able to buy a base set of cards for $5. but you can. Beckett comes out once a month, i don't know how they can *really* have an accurate reflection of the market. the guy at the card store might have a rookie priced for $10 BV sitting there for a few months, but if you can get them on ebay for $2.50 and those are the ones moving - then what is the price supposed to be?

i still can't figure out how Crosby books for $250 when you can buy it for $150 on the bay. things are only worth what people will pay for them - the nice thing about ebay is sometimes you'll get really lucky - i have no idea how i sold my Lupul notable numbers for $75USD, but i did! i wouldn't have paid $10 for that card.

Shakes - that's just it, how do you gauge stuff like that. With the (SP's when I was collecting them) you could go by Ebay but even then people didn't like your pricing. That's why I think it's hard to have a set of rules for what you are doing. I think morals/ethics go out the window at times when collecting. People usually collect what they like, some collect things for investment, some for the better end of the deal, some for the chance to meet other people. I think it all comes down to that if you have people who will help you as much as you are willing to help them, everything works out for everyone.

None of us will ever get rich of this, the days of having something of great value tucked away in the basement,crawl space or closet are long gone. Even if it is still to happen, chances are we won't be around to see it.

I personally just like to get out what I put in.

In answer to an earlier question, the GP show is free. get there early or you miss out on some sweet deals. last time around i got a Ted Lindsay jersey for 5 bucks. Sure it was an Expo redemption but hey a lindsay jersey is a lindsay jersey.

This time around my target is a nathan smith jersey. a lot of peeps were selling Samsonov jerseys for 5 apiece last time around so i might pick one up if it's a decent swatch.

Finally got my Hockey Showcase cards today. My dad's came earlier in the week. Best rookie is either Vanek or Jokinen (others are Arturkhin and Nystrom). Got all four with the NHL.com redemption so it looks like i didn't get punished for my double dip. How the hell are they pricing around 25 in Beckett????

Personally, i think the Hockey Showcase cards look better with the gold.

tru - is a BD booster just a regular pack? it's tempting, but i'm holding money for the card show.

KovyFan - heatley was MVP of the All-Star game... not MVP of the whole year right? unless that stick was used in the AS game, it might be expendable for something that seems more collectable (ie. his first year at Ottawa). i'd lean toward ottawa, just because it's his first year there, every single game (know what i mean?). where as that other stick might not have any real connection to the AS game.

. I believe both his and Crosby cards will drop. Ovechin I think will go lower as most European players cards don't seem to retain there value in the North American market. It is always the "hype" that sells. It's what they accomplish before they retire or the limited # of things that are produced that retain high value.

What do you think of this. I just traded my Winning Materials Crosby for the SPX rookie signed cards of Ward,Danis,Montoya and Steen. I think in the long run I'll have a better deal. Right now I think it's par. From what I've seen with jersey cards don't retain the value they used to.

Not a chance, it's because of how much more of the stuff back then was made. The cards will go down a bit, but not to those levels. Those cards weren't worth a lot in the first place

i should clarify - not exactly the $3 level. but in relative ratio. the black diamond rookies were SPd back then too. crosby is the freak exception to the rule for a couple of years i think, it should stay about $100 (the regular YG) unless he gets hurt or tanks next season... but ovechkin might dip down to $50ish (YG).

but even in limited amounts - there has to be some sanity to the pricing at some point.

and how about second year cards probably not being worth anything? since there are already so many different true rookies to pick from. it won't be "i've a year 2 crosby... it'll be i've got the MVP crosby".

i'd even explore that situation from the 5 years from now perspective, versus the 40 years from now perspective. given that most collections are well kept, would the ultra rare cards be the ones collectors try to go after?

on the parallel end of things - the Parkhurst emerald cards (the first real popular parallel i think - and a neat idea at the time) are barely worth more then the regular card. there's absolutely no demand for them 13 years later.

That was my whole point with rookie cards these days. Greztky you had choice of OPC or TOPPS. Now you've got tons of different Products, albeit from one manufacturer. I think when Ultimate or Exquisite comes out, that will be the benchmark. IF the Patch auto cards are /199 or less.

Just finished opening my first box of MVP 05/06 and I pulled an Ovechkin rookie card, and a Crosby rookie card, and a Bertuzzi materials card.
