why is that card stores price their cards so high?? its like they want people to buy off ebay rather than put money in their pockets. a card store near me wanted $45 for a brule fleer ultra rookie; 45?! what, cause he is a local vancouver guy?! seesh! ill go to ebay and buy it for 4 bucks thanks. oh, and someone wanted to sell me a nick tarnasky sp game used rookie for $15!! he says "well, i have someone else that wants to buy it for 15"; i proceeded to tell him to take the money and run as ill be buying mine off ebay for 99 cents. so like seriously; why are card store guys overpricing so badly? or is just the stores i go to?

agreed on the card store front...

the overhead makes it so that their cards are more expensive... i don't know how else they can get around it. it's not like you can break more product to average it out.

even then, buying boxes is cheaper for me online. i like finding the bargains.

in terms of a business model - either you need to sell other items to keep your profits up, or you need to find a better way to sell ie. the internet and card shows.

personally - if the market says a card is only going for $10 then that's what it is... i don't know how beckett and card stores can continue to dictate prices, a card is only worth what it can sell for. if you want to hold on to that card until the guy pays the steep price - then fine... but otherwise??

followup question -
how is it a guy can spend $1000 on a case and only get like $10 for a completed set...

in terms of percieved/actual value - and what people charge for a pack for what you could sell the contents for - the whole hobby is kinda outta whack.

I only bought 3 boxes this year but if you don't pull something you collect, something low numbered or one of the big rookies it's probly going to be a waste. so how about Paypal was drawing from my bank account - which was apparently empited - then instead of going to my credit card... it somehow sent money or something to people... and i'm looking at Paypal, i just got back a "failed transfer" from a bank account, but i think the credit card covered it - and this was from a few weeks ago...

i have no idea what's going on. i was pretty sure my paypal was covered with a CC..

i'm looking at my bank statement and i'm being hit with NSF charges of 4 x $35, one for $70...

i have noooo idea what the heck is going on or if my paypal payments from like the past month are about to bounce :( it looks like i have an emergency meeting at the back five minutes ago!

ok guys, i need to give you the 411 in the event that i wasn't the only moron that didn't know this:

if you have attached a bank account to paypal and for whatever reason it is empty - anytime you send paypal from it (even though it's empy) you get hit with an NSF. paypal is authorized to take the money, so apparently it's just like writing a cheque and the bank docs you NSF (and not like swiping your debit card at the store where it simply tells you you have no cash).

the best part is that if you have a credit card attached along with your bank account (that is apparently empty) it will first try to take money from your empty account, the bank hits you with an NSF, and then paypal decides to take the money from your credit card.

so you pay whatever you owe to the seller of your item, +35$ charge to the bank for being NSF (and then you still have to pay the credit card company...)

the bank lady was nice enough to reverse 4 charges, after explaining to me that it's my job to know where my account is at (yeah i get that), and after me arguing that i had no idea paypal could do that or that i'd ever get an nsf charge (which i've never had before). and that when i noticed my bank account was out the first time i squared up right away (or so i thought), but that same day i had sent two more paypals through and i guess in the process my account wasn't updated, and i wasn't actually square, and then hit with two more gdamn NSFs.

so right now i'm still out $70. and paypal is happily taking money from my dad's credit card (which means i haven't actually paid out of my money for anything - and that my dad did)...

i have to challenge paypal (and being a big happy stupid corporation, i might actually win) for the outstanding service charges. because after all, i thought that was the whole idea of setting up a back up credit card - obviously i want to cover my ***, why hit me with the NSF?

i'll keep you all updated.

Another thing which I don't like, is that you have to use the balance in your paypal account before it'll go to your CC. I had $25 in there, and wanted to spend the $65 from my CC but it made me do the $25 balance and $40 off the card :(

I tell you that what Ebay/Paypal does cannot be legal. Between freezing funds and taking money from your account (chargebacks) I could see as a seller why no-one wants to deal with them.

the lady at paypal says that they aren't responsible for NSF - and that they e-mailed me (to my other account... which i check once a month) - at which point i should've added funds to my bank account... i said i don't get how that works because they got their money from me anyway from my credit card.

it is technically the banks charge - but it's paypals system that has screwed me over (back up funding my arse).

i'm not sure who the heck i should be calling next... i'm not biting the bullet on a $70 charge.

i really think there's an issue here with paypal, as i thought i was covered... that's what back up funding is isn't it?... with the bank all i can say is that i had no idea that that could happen and hope they are sympathetic (which the lady mostly already was- i got 4 off, when she's only allowed to do 1).

yeah it's mostly my fault about the account - that was a mistake on my part. but my understanding though was that it wouldn't even matter because PP was hooked up to a credit card. thereby always being able to pay for what i bought. which was the idea to prevent any mistakes.

-- now i'm reading these e-mails... the first one that bounced is now covered by PP balance... but it said it couldn't charge my back up source of funding. so i don't even know what that's all about (or when i'll find out)... now i'm waiting to see what happens with the 5 other transactions that haven't been paid for...

a credit card only guarantees an instant transer. paypal fronts the money to the seller so they can ship it out to you.

credit cards do not protect you against any charges or fees...

because of the time frame (and i guess paypal tries a few times to get it done) i think only one charge went to my dad's acccount... the rest of it will be covered in 5-7 business days as they are rechecked, and will get money from my bank account (which i filled up).

so boy do i ever understand how that works now... i hope to talk to the bank. if a billion dollar company (can i call a bank a company?) can't forgive a kid a few bucks when he's been banking there for 15+ years, i don't know what the world is coming to.

i'll be removing my bank account as soon as those expenses clear... that's some bogus action right there (oh, and adding *my* credit card to make sure that i don't have to go through my dad to balance it all out).

1935 Sporting Events and Stars - Ice Hockey

chalk that up as card #5 from the pre WWII era for me. This one was a purchase from a member of a research organization I belong to. The cool thing about the card is it depicts the Winnipeg Monarchs against the Wembley Lions.

so with little to no money until next wensday when the auction ends I had my eye on one more card for snipping, with this in mind i held onto my 73.59 in paypal credit. Hey guys, help me out here.

I haven't collected cards for some time other than the McDonalds cards each year.

So I've been looking for an Ales Hemsky rookie card and looking on eBay. What I found were all kinds of "rookie" cards listed for Hemsky.

Now my question is this. What constitutes a "true" rookie card? It used to easy back in the day to figure this out.

Here's the definition I posted on the Card Corner boards a couple months back

- A rookie card must be part of a base set. It can be part of a subset therein and have added features such as serial-numbering, autographs and jerseys, but the primary clause is that it must be part of the main set.

- A rookie card cannot be an insert or a parallel.

- A rookie card can be a redemption card, as long as the redemption follows the same numbering as the set (see OPC's redemptions from the '01-02 and '02-03 sets).

- In order for a set to qualify as 'RC eligible', it has to be a "widely available" set. This, in the past has meant what I refer to as "standard releases", ie. those available in hobby or retail outlets.*

- An "RC eligible" set can be either in pack or boxed form.

- An "RC eligible" set must have licensing from at least one governing body, those being the league (NHL) and its corresponding players association (NHLPA).

- RCs cannot come from regional or premium sets. Regional refers to cards such as team sets, while premium sets are those which you have to buy a non-card item (eg. McDonald's fries) in order to get the cards.

Now, there are a couple debates on-going in the hobby which I will quickly note:

- I asterisked the point on "standard release" sets because there is a big debate in Beckett regarding online cards like Rookie Showcase and eTopps, because they are only available online. Personally, like mail order sets (Young Superstars comes to mind), I consider these to be RCs as they qualify as being "widely available". There isn't a collector today who can't either click on at home or go into a web cafe and place an order.

- The Original Six sets that ITG did a couple years ago raised debates, since the sets were team oriented and viewed by Beckett and others as being "regional" sets, despite being released internationally. Same would go for the various Yankees sets UD produced.

The next big debate will come as alumni bodies like the NHL Alumni start to become more active in licensing. IF that comes to play a major part, further restrictions could be put in place.
