Canuck fans have been spoiled by the best play by play guys in the league since the beginning. Robson, Hughson and now Shorthouse. That's a great lineup of guys, but think for a second what it would have been like if the job went to Dan Russell instead of Shorty, like everyone thought would happen

oh. by far. I totally agree, Robson is in a class all by himself, it's a shame he doesn't get mentioned in the top 3 all time, Gallivan, Hewitt, Kelly, Robson, Cole, Lange, Hughson

Down to the wire, another Luongo Steal.
inverno-76
03-04-2007, 11:12 PM
For all of those naysayers who say Luongo isn't a proven playoff goalie. For my money his performances in games like this says a ton. His stellar goaltending in OT and SO's says he's a money goalie. I think it will translate well for the playoffs.
As much as I despise my NW rivals, I do hope that you guys make a run and I think you have the horses to do it. Smolinksi was a great acquisition.

I have a strong feeling we can pull out another win tonight. We have an excellent record against teams from the Southeast Division and as long as we play with passion we'll steal 2 points.
wgsgecko
03-06-2007, 01:38 PM
I don't like all this stealing of games. Nucks are getting the two points but are they really winning games? I haven't seen a clear domination of play since???????? I can't remember. Maybe the new NHL is to evenly matched and we won't see any domination of play unless its a blowout?

I think it's also because of the weakness of the extra point in overtime. Every team fighting for a playoff spot just shuts down in the third period and prays for overtime. Take the Canucks for example. More and more I get the feeling that we're just playing for a tie so we can win it in OT. There's no point gunning for a win in regulation, risking a chance going the other way, when you can secure one point by making it to overtime.
I think the system needs to change. Either take away the extra point in overtime or make regulation wins worth 3 points. I just can't stand boring third-period hockey.
wgsgecko
03-06-2007, 02:00 PM
How about they go to a system of 2 points for a win and no points for a loss. Get rid of the shot out and just have overtime till someone scores!
99gretz99
03-06-2007, 02:02 PM
OT til someone scores could make the game last too long. Good for us but the player would prob vote no.
Shooto
03-06-2007, 02:38 PM
At 82 games a season, you would see a lot of guys ending their careers playing overtime until someone scores. Tired hockey players = more injuries.
I like overtime in the playoffs, but I'm also happy with shootouts during the regular season.
At least the fans don't go home with that blank feeling of a tie.

The problem isn't overtime or the shootout, I think both work very well, it's rewarding a losing team a point if they go out past regulation.
It takes away the passion and flow of the game when teams are just trying to insure one point. That's why you see the Canucks playing so many one goal games this year.
madchild1978
03-07-2007, 09:23 AM
It should be 2 points for a win, nothing for a loss. An extra point doesnt need to be awarded, and 2 points should be enough of a reward for the players, regardless if they have to play 5 extra minutes or not.
COWAN!!!!! THE NEW NASLUND!!!! ;) :)

I think the idea of every game being worth 3 points is interesting too, a full 3 points for a regulation win and then you split the points if it goes to OT/shootout. It would defiantely put a premium on winning the game in regulation rather than playing for the shootout. It would sort of ruin all the old records for most points in a season, but Bettman and Co. have crapped all over tradition anyways.

I think if you make a win worth 3 points it will really split the teams up and take away from the race. It keep things interesting with teams being locked in a race for points with only there being a gap of 10 more points between 1st and 8th?

That's true I guess, I definately see the desire to keep the races close. I wonder what the difference would be between the two systems though because there isn't much of a race going on in the West for the teams that aren't in a playoff spot. There's a lot of jockeying for spots, but the teams on the outside looking in like the Oilers and Avs are sort of toast at this point.
In some ways it feels pretty artificial to give out points for losing though, sort of like getting a participant ribbon at the track meet. :D

Exactly like I stated before in this thread....this is all great that there winning consistently but for me I will judge them come playoff time. They've won alot in the OT and 4 on 4 , the playoffs don't showcase 4 on 4 and shoot out so they better start getting it done in regulation.
But more importantly I love Jim Hughson's analysis on the Canucks and the Cowgary Flamers. The Flamers just keep getting further and further away in Nucks rear view mirror. I hope the Bolts stick it to the Flamers tonite.

Ahh yes. Forgot about the Nuck's series win vs St.Louis that year. Lost to Minnesota next. Still, I beleive that's their only series win since the 94 playoffs. You guys definitely had a " situation ". Not sure we do. Like I said, people are to hard on Turco. He's only been in the playoffs 3 times. The 2 losses to Colorado were partly him, but the entire team failed. The loss to Anaheim, he played well but just like Cujo in the first round vs Anaheim, got beat by a hair by a hot team. So I dont really see us as having a "situation".

An update on one of the 'Nucks prospects that I'm high on. He's a Jr and could forego his last year:
Minnesota-Duluth is coming off of a heartbreaking loss and tie to Wisconsin in their regular season finale last weekend. The Bulldogs ended the final month of the regular season at .500, going 3-3-2 in the month. Junior Mason Raymond (VAN) has been the best story coming out of UMD this season. He has the Bulldogs most consistent player all season long and currently leads the team with 43 points (14 goals, 29 assists). His 29 assists are a WCHA-best coming into the weekend. No skater in the WCHA this season meant more to his team on the scoresheet than Raymond did. He accounted for just over 44 percent of all the Bulldogs scoring this season - another WCHA best.

Ya, sometimes I can be like that, but who doesnt get like that at times. Besides. it is all in fun. Check my last 2 posts on here. Not sure why he has either in the first place. But he's on the computer , so he can act as tough as he wants.

Hey man, cool, I understand. But what Im saying is check my last 2 posts on here. Chilled. And breeze decides to act tough and then its on. And Ive probably only been on this thread like 4 times. Not 4 total posts because of course when youre in a heated back and forth internet yip fest. But Ive only come on here like 4 times. Thats hardly enough to be considered some kind of aggitator. For whatever reason, they seem to have trouble holding leads these days. In January and February, it seemed pretty much a given that they would hold a third-period lead.

I wouldn't want to play Calgary or Minnesota, I think the best case scenario is to avoid a first-round divisional matchup because those games are so emotional. Those teams would give 110% to beat the Canucks and even if they won the series, it would probably be a long, draining series.

Ya. i think it would be a wierd series. Close games probably. Not being bias but I think if one team had a chance to dominate it would be Dallas. Especially getting Brenden Morrow back and Modano hitting stride and feeling healthy again. But it would be a good one. With a goalie like Luongo though, you could beat about anybody.

wow u must be kidding, do you watch every game like I do? Rory IS the biggest liability in our own end, he gets lost is constantly hooking/grabbing, etc. he is THE last Dman id want back there. Ya Krajicek has moments of idiocy, but hey he's super young and will learn. I still think I've noticed him MUCH LESS than Rory on the backend, and when it comes to dmen, the less you notice them=the better job they are doing. I mean are you forgetting that string of about 6 games where Rory basically costs us a goal per game minimum?

Actually Ry I do watch every game, and I am not saying Rory is the answer, but as many times as I have seen him screw up, so has Krajicek. Krajicek is equal to Rory right now, maybe a bit worse simply due to his age and non-knowledge of the game. By no means am I saying Rory is the answer, but niether is Krajicek and they are both equally bad.

Rory is just as bad if not worse, Krajicek can at least skate and id much rather give him the experience then let Rory play. In my opinion Krajicek is 10X better than Rory. Rory cant pinch, cant clear it, cant stick with his man, cant do anything really. When it comes down to it, id honestly rather have tremblay up than him
madchild1978

I actually think that Krajicek has played much better since he started playing with Sopel. When Rory and Krajicek were paired together, I worried every second they were on the ice. I think he and Rory are nice to have as 6th d-men because they bring different things. Rory is bigger and more physical, whereas Krajicek is a better skater and puck mover. Given the importance of skating ability, I think Krajicek gets a slight edge from me, but Rory hasn't hurt the team when he's been in recently either.
I see Edler got the call-up, looks like Salo and Mitchell are both out for a while. I'm glad that they got Sopel to fill some minutes!

That was a strange game, the officiating was bizarre and it seemed like there were people diving all over the place on both sides. It was a great defensive effort though, they shut down the best team in the Western Conference and they did it without Mitchell and Salo in the lineup. All of the depth guys like Rory, Krajicek and even Edler stepped up their play, which is great to see. If there's an injury in the playoffs, it's nice to have depth.

Throw up a list, cause I dont really have any glaring needs, but I will tell you I gave up a Deion set and an Carson Palmer chase to get these, so I wont let them go for less.

i arrived at 1045 and sat in the nosebleeders. Heard there was a big lineup at 930. They announce a sellout of 18000 but seemed more like 8000. Still lotz for a 1.5 hour practice. I enjoyed the shootout the most.

Barf, one of the worst defensive displays of the season. Part of that has to be due to missing Ohlund and Salo, but I haven't seen them run around like that in their own zone for some time. They looked very disorganized and sloppy which is unusual since Christmas. Credit to Sakic, he's one hell of a player though. Every time he was on the ice, he was dangerous. If only our #19 could say the same.

I think the Layoff hurt them. they didn't look as sharp and plus missing Ohlund and Salo and playing Kraijcek hurt them...Kraijcek was on the ice for most of the goals they scored. I hope they rebound in Denver.

Yeah, very true. He wasn't as sharp as usual and in his post game interview, he seemed pretty cranky. Ah well, can't win 'em all.

Yeah, the bra is a Cowan only deal. It's too bad none hit the ice when he lit it up a few games back though.
I can't wait for towel power though, or the playoffs in general, it's been too long since the Canucks have played post-season hockey.

Krajicek's flaw is that he isn't consistent. He'll have a great game one night only to play poor the next. He's got a great stick and can make a good first pass but doesn't play physical and is sometimes too soft when leaving our zone. Plus his coverage is hit-and-miss. I don't think that Vigneault will give him enough ice-time to hurt us in the playoffs.
By the way, you confuse me. You're from Vancouver, you say "we" when you talk about the Canucks, yet you have a Wild avatar. I...cannot...compute.
