Yes... do that.

And in 6 months your plasma will look like this.

http://www.plasmasaver.com/images/tv-43.png

And warranty won't cover repair or replacement.
You have a point, even though most plasma screens today have some kind of burn in protection, they are not 100%, if watching 4:3 constantly then you will eventually run into burn-in problems with Plasma screen.

Garth it all depends on how much you want to spend. Onkyo makes some really nice Recievers for under $600.00 that will work

The biggest thing seems to be the decoding ability. Some of the receivers out there dont upconvert the signal-However it comes in is how it goes out.Just dont want to have a under powered receiver when im use to having the mack daddy.

I have the new Onkyo SR605, which retails for $499, but got it for much less at J&R preorder ($399, had to call to get that price), I have it it for a month and love it.For this receiver it only upcoverts to 720P when using anything other than a HDMI cable. Only thing, like GPWYNKEE said, many receivers don't really upconvert (unless you're willing to fork over the cash, usually close to $800+). Not only that, HD/Blu Ray players today don't truly have TrueHD audio spec fully implemented as of yet.

Well my whole Onkyo 7.1 surround sound system cost me $399.00 and it works perfect. It doesnt have HDMI switching but I dont need it.

You can spend some serious coin but really dont need to unless you have a dedicated HT room.

My STRDA3200ES from sony converts everything to a 480p through HDMI and I have my HDMI 1080p passthrough, with HDMI switching (I should have gotten the 5200ES) but I do not have TrueHD or any of the new sound codecs on it, however I don't think I would be able to tell the difference...unless you think you will be able to tell the difference in the audio codecs it wouldn't really be worth it to change your audio system around

Garth here are a few that would work

TX-SR505 ($380, now available)

TX-SR575 ($480, now available)

2 HDMI inputs (video pass-through only; audio requires separate connection)
Component video conversion (composite/S-video converted to component output)
Audyssey 2EQ auto speaker calibration
XM- and Sirius-ready

TX-SR875 ($1,700, June 2007)
7.1 A/V receiver, 140 watts per channel

The whole lineup is impressive, but the sweet spot--especially for those on a reasonable budget--definitely looks to be the TX-SR705 and TX-SR605.

I wish I could take a picture of it but yeah 1 HDMI cable going to be TV, which is a pretty big reason why I bought my receiver, now looking at those Onkyo receivers I may be regretting my purchase, however since I work for Sony it really doesn't matter, the next line of ES receivers should have all those fun new codecs so I am not sweating anything, plus they have a high resell value

Any fixed pixel panel does (plasma, lcd, dlp)... how else would it fill the screen with picture if you ran a 480i signal into a 720p tv?

Just like other sources, upconversion quality varies.

MofoEd

I honestly don't think it works that way, will have to ask my techie buddies. My understanding is that HDtv's will just display resolution depending on the source. My LCDtv usually tells me the source resolution, for ex. SD channels will read out as 480p, HD channels 1080i. I will only get upconversion when I connect the Cablebox to my reciever and my SD channels get bumped up to 720p according to my LCDtv (My 1080i HD chennels remain as is). The LCDtv does no upconversion, nor have I heard any HDtv that does. It is the source device that upcovert the signal if it is capable of doing so (DVD, cablebox, A/V receiver, etc.)
But will have to ask to make sure :)

I went to BN.com and chose 4 titles that qualified for the deal; The Jerk, Talladega Nights (unrated), Children of Men, and Breach. Getting The Jerk for Free, my total was $107.02 ($115.85 w/tax)

I went over to amazon.com and chose the same 4 movies; the total is $102.80 - before the 10% off high def DVD promo, which knocked my total down to $92.52 DLVD.

I know it was buy 2 get 1 free on BN, but I still chose 4 cheaper on amazon. I know amazon is hard to beat, but why bother with BN when you can get the same amount of dvd's for less money - even without the extra 10%?

No it doesn't Primebane - I've got a 720p/1080i DLP, and it will output whatever the source material is in that format.

It clicks over to 720p when it's HD, but most of the cable stations coming in are 480i.

PrimeBane
06-26-2007, 01:18 PM
No sir... Your tv will say the signal is 480i, 720p or 1080i, but it will take that signal and upconvert or downconvert it. (depending on the native res and the signal).

DLP, LCD and Plasma are all fixed pixel units.

This is a poor representation, but I think it illustrates it well enough.

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=483204

Like the original poster says, it looks WAY better in person.

With the price of HD DVD players hitting all time lows, I'd suggest buying the Toshiba A2 the next time it goes on sale (it's been as low at $199 US). It does as good a job as an Oppo upconverting DVD player and you get the benefit of being able to play HD DVDs.

Or if you're warry of buying HD DVD, you could spend a couple hundred more and buy the Sony BDP-S300. I've heard very good things about it's upconverting capabilities and you can play Blu-ray movies.

Or you could just buy and Oppo 981, the best upconverting DVD player in it's price range.

Interesting little piece of positive HD DVD news today....

Courtesy of DailyTech.com, sales of Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD-DVD stand-alone player have reached a total of 155,000 since its launch in the United States, and it represents the 360's "biggest-selling accessory" ever sold for the console.

Even though there is more Blu-ray hardware in the hands of consumers, the HD DVD side averages more movies sold per machine. According to CNET, an average of one disc per Blu-ray machine is sold, compared to four discs per HD DVD machine.

Well...the fourth one isn't free also...so it's really only worth it if you buy 3...furthermore it's only worth it if you buy the ones they marked down to 23 bucks or so....All the titles you mentioned are much more expensive at BN so it doesn't pay. I think avsforums' thread about it lists which movies are the cheapest for each format that make the deal worthwhile.

I got 3 for 48 dlvd. Even with Amazon 10% it would've cost about $60 dlvd for the same titles...and BN had better shipping.

Just a tidbit of info for those that were talking about upconverting and have the same problem I do... the Oppo 970 can indeed be hacked to upconvert via component and by the sounds of it, pretty easy. I've read nothing but good about Oppo so I'm going to get one. Also, there is a Samsung (981 I think) and a Phillips that can do the same but I haven't read as much good stuff about those, but they are cheaper.

Now outside of that I'm looking to get a dvd player to go along with it all. I was thinking about just doing the xbox 360 HD add on and give the real machines time to drop in price. Any thoughts?

The projector I picked is the Panasonic PTAE1000U 1080P
The reciever is a Marantz MARSR5001 90 watts x 7 channels
Polk Audio 5.1 surrond with the PSW505 Sub

Now outside of that I'm looking to get a dvd player to go along with it all. I was thinking about just doing the xbox 360 HD add on and give the real machines time to drop in price. Any thoughts?

Nice set-up.

I think they need to lower the price of the add-on. Prices were $199.00 for the a2 standalones for a little while. Still a nice pc of equipment for only $199.00 tho

Looks VERY SWEET Wofford29!

As for the addon, it's a nice cheap way to get into HD, but you can find the Toshiba HD-A2 for $299.99 or less. It comes with 5 free movies and makes a terrific upconverting DVD player as well.

Wofford29
06-27-2007, 09:24 AM
So if I went with the A2 the max it will ever put out is 1080i right? I know the 360 add on is releasing a cable to put out 1080p next month, do you think the A2 would still be a better option as far as quality and for playing SD DVD?

PrimeBane

I'll def have to look into those as well, it will be minimum 2 months before I can get one anyway so I've got plenty of time to read up. :D

Yeah 720p seems to be very affordeable, under $1000 is crazy.

Know of any reputable online dealers in Canada that sell projectors?

These are two that were recommended to me... I haven't purchased anything from them yet so I can't comment on them personally.

www.tigerdirect.ca (http://www.tigerdirect.ca) also carries projectors.

1080i to the project should be fine for now... it will upconvert to 1080p, but you'll probably want to look at a true 1080p output device when the price is more reasonable (maybe my Xmas if you're lucky).

The A2 will do a way better job than the 360 for upconverting DVDs.

Don't hang too much on that new 3rd party 360 HDMI cable... it looks great, but there's a lot of unanswered questions and no price has been released.

There's also the new Sony Blu-ray player if you want to go that route as well. It does a fine job of upconverting and it's a true 1080p with 1080p/60p and 24p output (it's what all the Blu-ray fanboys RAVE about) player. MSRP is $499 US so you could probably find it for less in a month or so.

Oh you bet I will. I'm pretty much at the point where almost everything needs upgrading, first thing I'm going to do is get that Oppo DVD player, then get a projector for the basement, then get a HD and good upconverter movie source happening for the projector, once that happens I'll move the Oppo upstairs and use it with the 52" for casual DVD watching. I have a not so bad but not great reciever, still need to figure out the audio situation but I'll get to it eventually lol.

This is the stepup entrance into the theater...

http://i9.tinypic.com/4pbmm1l.jpg

This is day one of construction. The screen was tac'd up and the speakers were dropped in.

http://i14.tinypic.com/5x62oht.jpg
http://i11.tinypic.com/66jtg86.jpg

This is opening up the doors into the theater. This was start of day two. Walls Painted, trim painted, can lights dropped in front and back, and all the outlets and switches changed from white to black and dimmers added.

http://i14.tinypic.com/67o7d4h.jpg
http://i17.tinypic.com/62ru89l.jpg

This is where I'll be building the platform. I have to get the recliners in first before I can spec out the details. But it will be back in this area.

http://i9.tinypic.com/4th5k0p.jpg

Here's the doors leaving out of the theater. I've yet to paint them because I'm probably going to take them off and mount them to swing out instead of in.

http://i11.tinypic.com/6ezxvee.jpg

This is the screen taken down with a coke can placed in front of it for reference.

http://i19.tinypic.com/4pnlxld.jpg

Finally, here is where all my components will be housed. It's the closet in the room behind the theater, but it's been wired from the attic and the wires dropped down inside the walls to come out here.

http://i11.tinypic.com/6cgtytv.jpg

I haven't decided what I'm goin to do to the ceiling yet, but I'll probably end up painting the majority of it the same dark grey color on the walls, and have a little drop down trim in the center of the ceiling with the inside painted like a night sky. I'll keep the progress shots coming. Thanks for looking and if it would be easier to start my own thread with this let me know so you won't have to dig through pages to see the shots.

Yes purchase a power strip, the one that was shown is the one that I have, but like i've said before I work for Sony so I got it for waaayyyy less that 300 bucks, its got like 4 ethernet ports and 4 coax inputs/outputs and I like how it has different plugs for different types of products, high power, medium power and low power, it also equalizes all your power so nothing causes a power spike

Wow....set up my Panasonic 50" Plasma last night and am completely blown away. I'm really glad I listened to to your guys' advice, because the picture and performance is just simply breathtaking.

Standard TV looks very clear with no pixelation or blur....Blu-Ray of course looks ridiculous, but I was most pleased with the combination of the PS3 upscaling a regular DVD and how well it displayed. I popped in The Warriors that I got from blockbuster online, and I couldn't believe the quality...I always rolled my eyes at the guys who said their upconvert DVDs were "good enough" until a high-def format was decided, but I can see what they mean...the detail wasn't there, but the clarity and to an extent the colors were on par with HD material.

Anyway, one quick question - I know if you're watching in 4:3 and you have the gray bars, that can cause burn in, but if I'm watching something that doesn't fill the whole screen, but the "bars" are just black space on the top and bottom....will that cause burn-in as well over time?

Thanks, and thanks again (Prime, Grif) for the plasma info.

It could. Take the time and break in the plasma. Turn down brightness and contrast under 50% for the first 100hrs. Wait untill the plasma breaks in because the picture will only get better.

Just make sure you switch up the content. Som 4:3, some full screen and so on and you shouldnt have any problems

Enjoy your new toy

Make sure you take that plasma off Vivid mode.

Yeah, the 2.35:1 and 2.40 could give you the same problems if you watch too much of it. But you should be fine for movies here and there... the burn-in occurs when you watch nothing BUT 2.40/2.35:1 content or 4:3 content all the time. If you mix things up nicely and stretch 4:3 stuff you'll be just fine. :)

I know how you feel. I've been watching Discovery HD nonstop since I got mine. Not only is it a great channel for the break-in period, the programs they show look freaking amazing. I just have a big grin on my face as I watch it.

Thanks for the hot water tip, guys - Bullitt worked afterwards. The disc flat out wasn't being recognized before I did that.

What exactly was wrong with it where running it under hot tap water would fix it?

Oh, and any suggestions for a new sound system for HD-DVD watching and X-Box 360 playing? I'm moving into a new house that has a bedroom where I'll be that is roughly 10 feet by 10 feet. I have some Logitech Speakers that came with their 500 dollar PC system from a few years ago, but the sub died. I was thinking of maybe getting an Onkyo receiver (the one listed on the last page) for 400ish, and using the old speakers as I think they would be enough for the room, and then dropping 200 or so on a nice sub. Would this be more than adequate for now? Mind you I'm a recent grad on a pretty strict budget.

You've got the 360 HD DVD addon right?

If so, this system will do you for now.
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5280864

You can't get lossless audio from the 360 so an Onkyo would be a complete waste of month for you at this time.

I have this system and it does a good enough job for the price. :)

Thanks again, Primebane - Yeah, I've got the 360 add on. Only other thing I have to hook up to it would be my Macbook for music, and I'm assuming it has a standard hookup for that.

Man, TIB's got so much cheaper over the last 4 years.

I'm pretty sure it does... if you like I can check when I get home tonight for whatever connection you need.

It's not going be the greatest system, but it does well enough for movies and games... I have heard it lacks a little for music, but I've never had a chance to try it out.

MPCanes
06-29-2007, 03:31 PM
Honestly, it sounds like its slightly lower than I want - lacking for music would be a huge hit for me.

I think I'll look for something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-SR600-Theater-Entertainment-System/dp/B000NZ6JE8/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-5594405-5709703?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1183153758&sr=8-1

Sounds like roughly my price range and I like the greater inputs and whatnot.

Then, I splurge on a sweet Harmony remote :D.

I'd stick with a known brand...avoid something like Westinghouse or one you've never even heard of. Toshiba's products are always very good and they tend to be cheaper than the Panasonic/Sony/Samsung line of TVs.

Just shop around, read cnet.com and circuitcity.com reviews, those helped me a lot when I bought a new TV a few weeks ago.

After you find a tv that you would like to buy, go over to frys.com and check out their prices. A lot of times it's cheaper online than in store. I saved $1200 on the tv I bought from frys.com vs Best Buy and $900 vs the Sony Store, which was cheaper than BB by $200:eek: Oh yeah, there was free shipping, too.

Strange thing was the fact that I couldn't buy the extended warranty from the brick & mortar Frys, since the store and web site aren't directly connected to one another:rolleyes:

Got the warranty from the Sony Store instead, and it was actually $50+ cheaper than the Frys one.

That's odd......I could have sworn somewhere in this very thread someone posted an article where they did high tech tests on several brands of HDTVs and Westinghouse was near the top in overall performance...even beating out some High Profile Brands.

It was the article on the actual refresh rates (as opposed to the "claimed" refresh rates 1080i, 1080p, etc). I'm 99.9% it was in this very thread.

I was amazed that it picked up and controlled EVERYTHING. It was so simple too...after the initial program, if something isn't picking up at first, you press Help on the remote, and it asks you what's on or what turned off, and if something didn't turn off when you wanted it too, it will at that point read it and turn it off and add it to the memory for that function...

..then it asks "Now did it turn off?" Almost like the remote is exhuding arrogance as if to say "you like that, don't you?" :)

More important....the part where they say they are going to re-imburse anyone who had to pay $$$ due to the the three red rings.

PS3: $100 off and 5 FREE BDs.

It's not Circuit City. It's everywhere. And it starts July 12th.

i actually heard somewhere on Avsforum around October....don't quote me on it, though.

Also in October is a new BBC release Galapagos...looks sweet, for both Blu-ray and HD DVD.

I wonder if Batman Begins on Blu ray is just going to be a port of the HD version. In which case I'd imagine it would lose a little in the transfer eh?

It doesn't work like that.

It is simply recoded in the same codec on a different disc format. It will look the same, provided they don't intentially **** blu-ray over, which would be insane.

This is pretty cool, I'll definitely pick this up when it comes out, as I've always been a Dave Matthews fan...his acoustic shows with Tim Reynolds are great, I imagine this one will sound phenomenal.

Going back to the Harmony remotes for a second - I had the 880 all rang up at Circuit City, ready to go until I asked "What happens if it doesn't do everything I want it to?, What is the return policy on this?" They said there would be a 15% restocking fee so I told him to take it off the order right away - that's crap IMO. For a $250 remote they want to charge me almost $40 to return it if I open the box? Yeah, right.

Why would you buy it from CC??

Amazon has it plus a hassle free return policy

why would you ever buy electronics from Circuit City...for the reason you stated and because their warranties are always extremely expensive, even more than best buy. I regularly see warranties coming in at more than a third of the cost of the actual product.

They'll never get my business for anything other than games or movies when they're on sale.

That's how much I paid for my last HDMI cable...$1 with $5 shipping.

Another reason why Circuit City is criminal...I think the cheapest one they had there was $90 bucks.

I just bought two to make it a better deal with combined shipping. $10.30 dlvd for two 6ft HDMI cables is pretty good. No one around me sells any for less than $50.

is it stupid to buy a 5.1 htib and only use 2.1 or 3.1 sound? i want the tiny speakers and simple receiver for the low cost for $200-$250. it's for my little exercise area. i don't feel like paying for longer wire to run wires behind me. at least not now.

Sale at Fry's for Blu Ray

20 movies at $12.50 each.

Most of the movies suck, but they had Hellboy, Identity and Memento.
The other movies I saw were Big Fish, Kung Fu Hustle and Hitch. They had a whole table set up, but I wasn't interested in most of those.

So it sounds like Sony FINALLY confirmed the PS3 price drop and the 80 GB for North America

Effective immediately (hopefully reflected in stores soon) the prices will be

60 GB - $499 US, $549 CDN
80 GB - $599 US, $659 CDN (available in August)

Now if I can find a deal where they include a free game and movie, I might just make the BD plunge :)

Totally forgot about the 5 movies thing... and it's good until Sept. :)

It's still 5 crappy movies though, but with a BB gift card burning a hole in my pocket I should have it all for about $510 CDN... but I think I'll wait a month or two to see what deals come up from the local big box electronics stores.
