I have the EB Games warrenty on mine. Anyone know if I go to exchange my PS3, if I can get the new 80GB version with Motorstorm, since it is $599, which is what I paid for my originally?

Why would you buy it from CC??

Amazon has it plus a hassle free return policy

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Advanced-Universal-Control/dp/B00093IIRA/ref=pd_bbs_1/105-0237520-0318849?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1183815435&sr=8-1

Dude - you never said it was over $100 less!;)
I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't even click on that link at the time - I wanted the remote right then and there so I picked one up at Best Buy (who did NOT have the 15% restocking fee on it, I even checked with the manager). Anyways, I am absolutely blown-away with the remote - it's so awesome and does what I wanted it too plus so much more. I went ahead and ordered the one on Amazon last night after reading on the Logitech forums that it was over $100 less there. When it comes in the mail I think I'll just take it back to Best Buy since it won't even be opened and I don't want to have problems syncing a brand new remote or having to reprogram everything. I'm pretty sure they won't price-match Amazon so I won't even ask them.

Totally forgot about the 5 movies thing... and it's good until Sept. :)

It's still 5 crappy movies though, but with a BB gift card burning a hole in my pocket I should have it all for about $510 CDN... but I think I'll wait a month or two to see what deals come up from the local big box electronics stores.

USA DEAL: http://www.bluraysavings.com/index.html
CANADA DEAL: http://www.bluraysavings.com/index_ca.html

i think 4 of the 5 categories to choose from have at least 1 good movie.

Does anyone have any experience with the Samsung LN-T4042H LCD HDTV? I'm looking at taking the plunge into HD and this looks like a good one to bank on. I have heard about some audio problems with other models in the 42H series but I haven't heard anything on this one. Thanks.

My buddy bought a Samsung LCD 42" not sure what model and it's one very nice TV. Puts out a sweet HD pic.

If I were to buy one it would be the Toshiba Regza. 3 HDMI inputs. Very nice line of TV's

the 80 GB version supposedly is bundled with MotorStorm FWIW

Very true... but racing games don't do much for me. :)

And Sony was smart enough to use a standard laptop HDD, so anyone can easily upgrade to a WAY large drive if they so choose.

Nice find on that Optoma freezerfuel... have you seen any reviews on it?

Yeah, AVS forums has a lot of info and reviews on it, it confused the hell out of me because it looked exactly the same as the HD70 but it's called HD32. I guess Costco has to change the name for legal reasons or something but it's the exact same thing as the HD70 (which has got great reviews on AVS). One of the threads there at AVS explains it better if you search for HD32.

One thing about that Costco deal is if you're not a member they charge an extra 5% which still isn't too shabby of a deal.

Retail Stores often change the model numbers of popular electronics. One reason is to get around price matching and such, as price matching from one store to another usually states "same model."

Whoops, different deal I guess, Tiger.ca has an A2 refurb for $266, doesn't look like much of a warranty comes with it but I'll probably buy the extended warranty for 1 year which is only $35. Gonna call 'em tomorrow and see if they'll give me a deal on a bundle (screen, projector, Toshiba, some HDMI cables etc.) If they don't I'll probably get that Costco deal. Pretty much decided I want the HD70. Then I gotta find a reciever that does HDMI audio and video pass through, I think that's going to kill the rest of my budget. And I hear ya, it adds up quick, luckily I'm selling a few statues to help fund this madness. :D

Hey guys, finally got a chance to move my 58" DLP set from Miami to Palm Beach (Doing 80 on the highway with a thunderstorm on our asses, haha), and I've been working on cleaning it up so it looks like new (Took Goo Gone to all the stickers and tape residue since it was a floor model). I bought some Microfiber clothes for the screen, but I wouldn't mind also giving it a wet wash as well.

Is the best thing to use for cleaning the screen a mix of 50% rubbing alcohol, 50% water? I've been told this works well and is what those "LCD cleaners" basically consists of, I bought some 91% alcohol tonight but I'm hesitant to do any mixing until someone on here confirms.

Now that I'm finally starting my job, next up, Onkyo surround sound...and then a Harmony 880 remote...ahhhhh, Electronics :).

freezerfuel
07-14-2007, 10:15 PM
Be careful, I've always used just warm water and a very soft rag dampened with warm water for the screen and never had a problem... I've heard some cleaning agents can do some serious damage.

ps my buddy just asked my why I chose 300 HD over the less expensive 300 BD since I'm format neutral.

I might as well post my reply here in case someone else is interested.

HD DVD Exclusive Extras.

Most importantly, HD DVD has the IME (In Movie Experience) picture-in-picture video commentary.

“Bluescreen Picture-in-Picture Version: Director Zack Snyder Compares the Pre-CGI-Enhanced Version to the Finished Film”

So I think you get to watch the whole movie with the actors against the blue screens in a little square overlayed to the finished movie while the director talks the whole time.

Also of additional (but little) exclusive interest-

“Game ‘Vengeance and Valor’; Lead More Spartan Warriors into Battle Against Xerxes’ Forces and You’re your Combat-Hardended Knowledge of Tactics and Strategy”

“Web-Enabled Features: Cool Mobile Downloads”

Plus, while I wouldn’t specifically pay more for it ONLY, it IS a combo disc. So that is a benefit since I’m already buying it.

If you aren’t concerned about HD DVD exclusive extras or the combo disc, save $4 and grab the identical PQ/AQ BD version.

:)

It's all about the distributing studio.

300 is a Warner property and they support both formats.

Pirates of the Caribean are a Disney property and they only support Blu-ray.

The lines are drawn as such:

HD DVD - Universal, Weinstein, Warner, Paramount, New Line, Dreamworks.

Blu-ray - Sony, Columbia, Fox, MGM, Disney, Warner, Paramount, Newline Dreamworks

I own it. It's decent...maybe slightly above average. Some shots are good, the restaurant in the beginning comes to mind. The audio is average, as well. Good movie, no doubt. PQ and AQ are acceptable for a movie that age, but nothing that'll wow you.

Well, right now the PS3 is only $499.

The best advice I can give you is take a good hard look at the titles that each offer exclusively right now and base your decision on that. Blu-ray does offer more titles, but a lot of them suck.

I think both formats will be around for at least another year. They both are about equal these days in picture and audio quality.

Get HD DVD now as the players can be had as low as $199 (A2, 360 addon) and then pick up a BD player down the road when the price is better.

I'm looking to buy a new receiver, as my Pioneer (as well as my Bose 5.1 that I bought with it) is going on 10 years old. I do have a Sony 42" HD LCD with 1 HDMI, and I do use the HDMI from my HD Time Warner cable box to my TV.

2 questions-

1. When looking for a receiver, I need HDMI so I can run it to my 5.1, correct? Right now I have what I believe are high gauge audio cables. Some channels display the 5.1, whiel others don't. It's not always the HD channels, either.

2. I just got a new HD box with DVR today. I formerly had a HD box, but in order to get the HDMI, I needed an upgarded box. Now, my ESPNHD doesn't play video or audio in 1080, but most of the other HD channels do. Advice??

PrimeBane
07-19-2007, 04:27 PM
Well, you don't have to have HDMI to run 5.1... you could still use optical or digital coax, but considering the number of devices using HDMI, a receiver with HDMI switching is a good idea. Also if you buy and HDMI 1.3 capable receiver it will be able to decode next gen HD sound (Dobly TruHD, etc).

As for ESPNHD, that's an odd problem... I'd call their customer support line. You could have a faulty receiver or it might need a firmware update.

Daig12
07-19-2007, 04:34 PM
Thanks Primebane. The ESPNHD worked on the old box, that is the weird thing. I might look into upgrading my DVD player, which is over 6 years old, as well as the rest, but I figure the receiver is my next project. I do have digital cables now, but was curious to see the upgrade the upgrade the HDMI could offer.

Plus, some recievers have jacks for Ipods also. Right now I have the $100 dock that I bought running into my VCR port on the receiver. I have to turn off Dolby, PLUS turn up the receiver to -20 or near there to get decent volume.

PrimeBane
07-19-2007, 04:38 PM
Honestly, you probably won't notice a huge difference between HDMI and what I'm guessing you had before in analogue component cables (red, blue green). The benefit of HDMI now is that it can carry both sound and video so you're running less cables to the tv or receiver.

One thing you might want to try, although I'm not sure why they'd do it like this, is change up the output of the TW cablebox to 720p and see if ESPN is coming through. It's a shot in the dark though.

Does the 605 have dolby true HD?
Yes it does, I have it, but remember HD/BD players do not have the full capability to output TrueHD audio as of yet. as quoted from this thread:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=789994&page=1&pp=30
In the alternative, if the decoding is to be done in the RECEIVER, then you need to get the still-encoded "bitstream" -- the original, packed TrueHD or DTS-HD MA data -- over into the receiver. And THAT requires HDMI V1.3 or higher on both ends. But beware, that, once again, the ability to pass these new, "lossless" bitstreams is an *OPTIONAL* feature of HDMI V1.3. As it turns out, there are only a scant few players out there now that implement HDMI V1.3, and, as of today, *NONE OF THEM* actually implement passing these bitstreams to HDMI V1.3 receivers. This, of course, will change over time.

This will be done as future firmwares are released. I recently have the PS3 and have the SR605, the 605 does not give me the "TrueHD" display, but according to many articles and posts I have read, this is ok as long as my receiver is displayed MultiChannel Audio which it does. Either way, the I am very happy with my Onkyo 605. I don;t care too much about the video upscaling for the 605 as the PS3 does a decent job in doing that for my standard DVD's.

It upconverts. It does NOT upscale.

So it will upconvert your DVDs to HDMI. It will NOT upscale them to 720p or 1080p along the way.

That starts with the 875 model.

It's going to be a showdown at the high-def corral this September, when Warner Home Video saddles up a trio of western classics including 'Wild Bunch,' 'Wyatt Earp' and 'Gods and Generals.

Stampeding to stores on September 25, Warner will debut all three titles simultaneously on both Blu-ray and HD DVD.

Wyatt Earp is tempting.

Actually the SR605 can upconvert to 720p, but you have to activate a hidden menu to do it. I did it but I can see why it is a hidden, it's nothing much to boast about, the upcoversion still looked a bit grainy to me, so I just left it at 480p on SD cable channels. My HDLCD does a decent job anyway in SD PQ.

Very nice price for a 1080p TV of that size, but I'd be wary of the contrast ratio...1600:1 isn't that great...and that, coupled with the fact that LCDs struggle with deep blacks to begin with, means it might not be up there in terms of PQ with some of the plasmas. Not sure if you're 100% set on LCD or still considering other options. I went through the same thing a month ago before I bought my 50" Panasonic plasma.

Also, you probably don't need 1080p for a TV that size. I'd guess you'd never tell the difference. You might want to invest the extra money in a reliable brand at 768p with around a 10:000 to 1 contrast ratio. Panasonic, Samsung come to mind.

Just my two cents...

Now...out of curiousity....I went to ebay to see if any really good deals could be found. I can't believe how cheap you can pick up a 20gb version now. So my question is.....what are the main differences in the old 20gb to the now available 60gb/80gb?

Keith,
I would get 60 since it's cheaper now.

500 bucks is nothing to sneeze at!
I have no problems with it being refurbished (should I?)

thanks!

I see no reason why not, I just bought a refurb HD-DVD player although it only came with a 3 month warranty so I bought an extra 1yr's worth for $30, but the warranty for the Vizio is a lot more cash. I'll tell you that I've considered buying a refurb'd Vizio on their Canadian website. I wouldn't even bother paying more for a longer warranty but I'm lucky and have never had to return any electronics and I love pushing my luck. :D

Haven't seen the Fry's ad yet.

I guess the 5 free Blu Ray movies deal is done. I went on Amazon looking at the PS3 and there is no link or info on that deal. I think I'll wait til they do something similar (or at the very least a free remote) before I buy it.

Just don't put them side by side or in the same closed unit... the heat the PS3 give off can kill your 360 (like Sony didn't plan that! ;) )

Hey guys, I went ahead and ordered the Vizio.
One of my friends has that same model and I went and checked it out (took a few test discs with me i.e. planet earth and The Wild on blu ray) and was actually quite pleased with how they looked.

I actually found a slightly better deal than tigerdirect had going on here:

Most of it is just hype, but soem does seem true. It really dpends on your individual "ear" if you actually hear the difference or not. Playing around with different settings and so forth. I am quite happy now with my 6.1 setup and PS3. Just wondering if there is truely any difference with TrueHD sound when they come around to actually implement it.

Probably not new...I haven't been in the market for a year but I'm sure they're all pre-loaded with Vista these days. Maybe if you have someone build one (Computer Shopper advertiser?) you can specifically request XP instead of Vista...maybe one will do that to make a sale, who knows.

If anyone has a 360 and was on the fence for getting the HD DVD add-on...they just sweetened the deal massively.

SAN DIEGO — July 26, 2007 — Today at Comic-Con International 2007, Microsoft Corp. announced it will lower the price of the popular Xbox 360™ HD DVD Player from $199 to $179 ERP (United States only) starting Aug. 1, 2007, and will add five free HD DVD movies for anyone purchasing an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30. In addition, Microsoft further solidified the Xbox 360 as the ultimate high-definition (HD) entertainment platform, with key announcements around the HD DVD launches of “300” from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and “Heroes: Season 1” from Universal Studios.

To promote the HD DVD versions of “300” and “Heroes: Season 1,” Microsoft unveiled exclusive content for Xbox LIVE® Marketplace. Xbox LIVE will offer “300” on demand in HD starting Aug. 14, and is working with Warner Bros. at Comic-Con on a Bringing It Home campaign featuring “300” and other Warner Bros. properties. In advance of the street date for the “Heroes: Season 1” HD DVD boxed set, Xbox LIVE members will be able to download for free the show’s pilot episode in high definition for a limited time. Members will also be able to download trailers, teaser scenes and other promotional materials highlighting the “Heroes: Season 1” boxed set on HD DVD.

Already the most affordable high-definition player available, the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player is the best solution for movie lovers seeking HD content in the highest possible resolution. The player’s price reduction to $179 (U.S. ERP) continues to set the bar for value, making the Xbox 360 platform the most affordable solution for consumers seeking the broadest, most compelling selection of next-generation gaming and HD video experiences.

“With the price reduction to $179, the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player continues to be the most affordable way to enjoy high definition,” said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of Global Marketing, Interactive Entertainment Business, Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. “From the beginning, we set out to offer Xbox 360 owners an unrivaled high-definition experience, with a choice of optical discs on the HD DVD format and digital downloads through Xbox LIVE Marketplace — both of which have a selection of the best content Hollywood has to offer. Today’s announcements around ‘300’ and ‘Heroes: Season 1’ are great examples of how we believe HD content can be offered to consumers.”

In addition to the price drop, Microsoft is extending Toshiba’s highly successful “Perfect Offer” of five free HD DVD discs to Xbox 360 consumers. Previously exclusive to Toshiba HD DVD Players, with the purchase of an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player at the new low price of $179 ERP, consumers can choose five HD DVD titles for free from a selection of 15 popular titles through a mail-in offer. With a retail value of over $140 (U.S.), this promotion makes the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player one of the most compelling offerings for consumers looking to make the leap into HD this holiday season.

God damn that 360 add on deal is sweet, too bad I got mine launch day.

In other news, I'm pulling the trigger on the Onkyo HTIB today. I can't take being without surround sound anymore.

:D

That addon deal is pretty enticing... it's unfortunate that it's just in the USA.

Now if that Circuit City deal shows up again ($40), it's steal. :D

See I don't see it as that great of a deal. $20 bucks cheaper isn't a big deal to me and I don't know what the 15 movies you can pick from are. The other stuff revolving around 300 and Heroes aren't specific to the HD-DVD.

I agree the add-on is still way over priced. I would rather pay the extra $20 and get the A-2 which is a better machine and the 5 free DVD's

Its a start with the add-on but not that great of a deal..

Pretty crazy and that's ONLY season 1. :(

I imagine only the diehards will be buying that one... even with the typical 30% off at Amazon it's a pretty pricey set.

I didn't know Heroes was HD-DVD only. Still my comment was meant to reflect that the main stuff they were highlighting was content that would be available on Xbox Live. This means that anyone with Live can get it, so they don't really need the HD-DVD add-on. Of course, to get more than the pilot of Heroes, they would so I see part of the draw.

10 Discs? How much crap did they add to make the set 10 discs? I thought HD DVD was supposed to add a ton more storage than regular DVD. It would be nice when they get around to releasing TV sets to have all the episodes on 1 disc, and then bonus features on another without compromising picture quality. If they do that for shows like The Simpsons I'll have no choice but to replace my DVD sets.
