From the high-def digest review:
Well, I'm going to put on my flame-proof suit and say that because the film has been so intentionally processed and "degraded," its very nature just doesn't lend itself to the kind of truly eye-popping and ultra-realistic high-def that I've come to equate with the term reference quality. Yes, I know that this is the way the film is "supposed to look," but when you're dealing with a source that is so over-contrasted and "crushed down" -- not to mention intensely desaturated and laced with so much video noise that it seems like a swarm of mosquitoes has infested your television -- for me, the "wow!" factor is lessened considerably.
This is what I absolutely HATED about the movie...I don't care if that's how it was supposed to look, it totally killed it for me. I also know I'm in the minority here, but whatever. Can't see myself picking this up for even clearer nasty grain.

Perhaps we'll see a cleaned up version of the film down the road?

Watched both Bourne movies on HD DVD today, great movies, both look very good. I think for all the press Batman Begins and King Kong get for HD DVD, these two movies shine as the top exclusives for the format.

I just got a 50" Panasonic and absolutely love it... the picture is stunning at 768p ...drastically more noticeable than of my 62" Toshiba 720p DLP, which in and of itself is a beautiful TV even though it's 2 years old.
Highly recommend Panasonic.
My advice is that for any room, if you're on the fence, go with the larger TV...you'll thank yourself later.

This week might be dangerous for me....even without purchasing 300 for either format. I might dump a load for:
Hot Fuzz HD DVD
Shooter (whichever format I find)
Shaun of the Dead HD DVD
And I wonder what the reviews for that IMAX Blue Planet are going to be like? Even though I know I'll never find that one at retails.
Right now I'm leaning toward Hot Fuzz and Shooter and calling it a week.

Interesting article off highdefdigest.com.....
I agree with a few, the rest just seems like whining at this point....
Commentary by Joshua Zyber
In my first commentary for High-Def Digest several weeks ago, I wrote a Memo to the Studios with a list of ten small suggestions that I believe can help make discs on both the Blu-ray and HD DVD formats better. The focus of the article was not on broad, sweeping, or expensive changes that would be a burden to implement, but rather little things that could use some tweaking to make the disc releases more user-friendly and appealing to consumers. At the end of the piece, I asked our readers for their feedback, and to weigh in with their own pet peeves and suggestions for change.
We received some tremendous feedback both on our forums and by email. So much so, in fact, that I've decided to dedicate today's column to your thoughts.
Quite a lot of people voiced their agreement with my complaints about the hideous swooshy cover art that some studios are inflicting on High Definition discs of either format, and those annoying beeping and clicking noises used in too many disc menus. Not everyone agreed, of course. There were a few who liked the swooshes and the beeps. And there were some people who thought I was being petty to even notice such things in the first place. So be it. I certainly don't expect to speak for every early adopter. But I do have to ask if there is there anyone who would actually be upset if the swooshy cover art and menu beeps went away? Anyone at all? I really doubt it, and I think that there are enough people bothered by these things that it would benefit the disc releases to just get rid of them.
By far the biggest point of disagreement voiced over my article was the suggestion that every disc should start with a setup menu before the movie. It seems there are a lot of people who prefer the movie to just start automatically with no menu, as releases from Warner Bros. and Disney do. I made a case for why I find this problematic, especially on Blu-ray discs where pop-up menus don't work when the movie is paused, forcing the viewer to make their audio and subtitle selections as the movie begins, and then skip back to replay the movie again afterwards. Again, I truly find that a terrible user experience. Still, even though main disc menus have been a standard feature of the DVD format for a decade now, there are some people who really just want the movie to start automatically. So how's this for a compromise: instead of forcing a setup menu, why not have the disc open with the choice of going right to the movie or going to a dedicated setup menu instead? If no selection is made, the movie would just start after a predetermined amount of time. I've seen a few discs designed this way, such as 'Dirty Dancing' from Lionsgate, and it seems like a pretty reasonable middle ground.
So now we come to the list of reader pet peeves and additional suggestions for High-Def discs of both formats. There were a lot of them, some that I wish I'd thought of myself. Let's get right to it:
1.
Previews should always be skippable with the MENU command.
Personally, I find trailers and promos before the disc menu or movie just obnoxious, and it seems a lot of people share my opinion. So studios, if you really must put these advertisements at the start of your discs, please allow us to skip them with the MENU button. Right now there doesn't seem to be any standardization for this. On some discs MENU works, on others we have to SKIP past each ad, on really annoying ones we're forced to FF through the spot, and on the worst discs there's just no getting past them by any means. Using the MENU button to bypass the trailers is a good idea that your customers will appreciate. Please make this standard. Or better yet, just put the trailers in the supplement section of the disc where they belong, not forced at the start of playback every time.
2.
Forced anti-piracy ads are insulting to honest customers.
Hey, Mr. Studio Executive, you may not be aware of this, but not everyone on Earth is a thief. Most of us pay for your movies with our hard-earned dollars, and treating us like criminals is insulting. Here's a tip: real criminals don't watch your ads. When they strip all your precious copy-protection and rip the data off the disc, they dump those files, and then they laugh at you for putting them on there in the first place. The only people actually forced to watch the ads are those of us who have no intention of bootlegging your movie in the first place. Stop treating us like we, the people who support your business, are objects of contempt. We don't appreciate it.
3.
Make the security stickers less intrusive.
As if the anti-piracy ads aren't obnoxious enough, before we can even get to them we have to pry the disc out from its cocoon of 12 dozen security stickers. Isn't this overkill? At the very least, could you stay away from the glues that leave a nasty tacky residue all over the case?
4.
Enable the "Resume" function on all High-Def discs.
On standard DVD, the ability to stop playback and later resume from the place where we left off was a regular feature on almost all DVD players, yet on HD DVD and Blu-ray that function must be actively enabled in the disc authoring itself. For whatever reason, it often gets forgotten, and it's really annoying to viewers. This is a big step backwards in convenience from what we're used to with DVD, so please put some effort into including this feature from now on.
5.
Give us the Unrated/Extended/Director's Cut when available.
You know what's irritating? Going to buy a movie you like and finding the longer, funnier, raunchier, more action-packed, whatever version available only on standard DVD, and the High Definition release getting the shaft. Why does that happen? Ideally we want both cuts. You can put them on separate releases if you need to, but don't leave us HD buyers out in the cold.
6.
Make interactive and picture-in-picture features also available for separate playback.
Hey, we all think the fancy U-Control, In Movie Experience, etc. advanced features on High-Def discs are pretty nifty, but sometimes rewatching the entire movie just to see what amounts to half an hour or so of behind-the-scenes content isn't what we're in the mood for. How about also making that content available for separate playback in the supplements section of the disc?
7.
Don't waste our time with interactive features if they suck.
I don't have much to add to this reader-submitted suggestion, but it struck a chord with me, and I suspect with others as well. We're all for innovation, but don't bother putting some overly complicated feature on a disc if you're not going to put enough thought or effort into it. What comes to mind for this is Universal's U-Control implementation, which forces a viewer to constantly push buttons on the remote to bring up picture-in-picture content for no particular reason. Either we're going to want to watch the PiP content or we're not. Making us push a lot of needless buttons just for the sake of calling the feature "interactive" is really pointless and frustrating.
8.
Don't be cheapskates with your disc art.
Here I'm not talking about the keepcase, but artwork screened onto the top of the disc itself. Sure, if it's a double-sided disc that's not an option, no problem. But what's with the generic blue design on most Sony Blu-rays? These High-Def formats are supposed to look fancy and high-end, not like a public domain cheapie pulled out of the bargain bin. Don't cheap out on us. Make it look nice. It can't be that hard.
9.
The more subtitle options the better.
Both High-Def disc formats brag about their greatly expanded storage capacity in comparison to DVD. Well, how about using some of that extra room to squeeze in extra subtitles for viewers who don't speak the language of the movie? It seems that English, French, and Spanish are pretty standard, but there are a lot more languages spoken in this country, let alone worldwide. We've even been told about the possibility of downloading extra subtitle tracks into the player that will sync up during movie playback. Innovations like that would be very welcome.
10.
When releasing on both formats, give them the same specs.
For the studios releasing on both Blu-ray and HD DVD, it does not seem fair to buyers when the same movie on one format gets lossless audio or nifty bonus features that the other doesn't. Half your customer base now feels slighted by your decision. We realize both formats have their technical limitations, but whenever possible please try to keep your disc specs even and fair.
11.
Be better about day-and-date releasing.
Considering how often High-Def discs are delayed for weeks or months beyond the release of the standard DVD version of the same movie, we in the High Definition market often feel like an afterthought. Try to get the HD version out at the same time as the DVD. And this applies as much to catalog title reissues as it does to new releases.
12.
Don't be so secretive about your release calendar.
If you want to lure new buyers to your formats, you've got to entice them with titles available and those coming soon. When DVD announcements are made months in advance, why is it that so many studios are tight-lipped about their High-Def plans? Sometimes we don't even know a title is coming until it pops up on retailer shelves. That's no way to build excitement.
13.
Make sure catalog titles have been recently remastered.
I debated whether or not to say something about this in my original list, simply because I feel that matters of audio and video quality are best addressed in reviews of the individual titles rather than in blanket lists of suggestions, but the complaint keeps coming up so I feel compelled to mention it here. Unfortunately, High-Def buyers are finding that certain studios (yes, Universal, this means you -- but no, everyone else, it doesn't only mean them) have been dumping catalog titles onto High-Def discs using video masters that are clearly several years old and don't hold up to modern video transfer standards. There's no excuse for a High Definition disc to be plagued with edge enhancement or excessive filtering, yet that's what we're seeing on a lot of older movies. If remastered under current standards, these same movies would no doubt look a lot better. I certainly don't want to discourage studios from digging into their back catalogs, but could you at least take a closer look at some of these older masters before deciding what makes it onto your release calendars, and put the effort into a decent remaster when appropriate?
There you have it, the voice of the people. A baker's dozen of new suggestions to add to my last list. Once more I'll offer the disclaimer to any studio execs who may be reading this: I can't guarantee that following these suggestions will help your format win the war, but doing so will certainly improve your products, and should make High-Def discs more appealing to your target customers.

I've tried enjoying Blade Runner twice Jaylis but you aren't alone... I just can't get into it.
So I watched my first HD-DVD, The Host on my new 100" screen and was impressed... I actually was setting my equipment up and only meant to watch the first few minutes to get an idea of what kind of picture adjustment options I had but ended up watching the entire movie with only one speaker hooked up and a crooked picture, I just couldn't turn away. :D (the movie itself was decent but nothing great, about a 7/10) I had it hooked up to my projector via HDMI, then I hooked it up to my 52" HD Ready TV thru S-Video and the picture was okay but nothing amazing... on the projector though, all I can say is WOW. I'm going to get a ceiling mount for it tho because I'll keep bumping it and have to keep re-adjusting the picture.
I can't wait for 300 on HD-DVD, I was going to get it on DVD but that has definitely changed.

Basically, the film hasn't been what Ridley Scott has wanted up until this day. It's one of the ultimate examples of how a film can be completely changed from the vision a director has.
He was fired but forced to finish the film after it went massively over-budget. Not to mention it was being re-written while being filmed, went under a ton of re-writes, etc. The 1992 "Director's cut" was a hack job Scott threw together. Vangelis, the scorer on the film, had huge differences with Scott. I could go on, but this is just a small example of the problems with the film.
Is it a perfect film? Hell no, far from it. But it was so far ahead of its time, its scary. It's like a fine wine, it keeps getting better with age.

Anyone else finding it impossible to find the remastered "Fifth Element" in stores anywhere?
Everywhere I go, they've got nothing. Some places still have the original BD release, but no remaster.
You'd think that, considering how anticipated the first, disappointing release was, and then how the remaster was anticipated even more (because of how crappy the first one was), that Sony would actually do at least one of the following.
1)Ship tons of the things out to every location, big or small, that sells Blu-ray discs
2) PULL every freakin copy of the original release from the shelves to avoid confusion and wasted space. Make things a little easier on the consumers (then again it is Sony:rolleyes: )
3) Take at least one or two further steps in seperating the box art of the remaster from the original. Seriously, there are one or two VERY subtle differences in the cover art for each, and for those who don't know what to look for, it's pretty much impossible to know which version you're purchasing.
Why does Sony do stupid crap like this with so many of its Blu-ray releases? Seriously. Big Fish...a pretty major title...only ONE store in my town got it on the week of release...and even then only one copy. Same with Hellboy. Same with 2 or 3 other Sony Pictures titles that, while not super new, aren't really old either. Maybe 3 or 4 year catalogue titles that are still pretty popular or well known. You'd think for they'd get some better distro going on some of these.

It's actually pretty common to see HD disk releases out early... often companies will send them early so the buyer gets it for the release date.
Even stores will mess up putting stuff out early. I've found both A Scanner Darkly and Shooter out the week prior to release. :)

As grainy as I remember it being in the theatre, the HD DVD is still pretty fantastic I have to say. I compared it to the DVD side both upconverted and not... the HD version was obviously superior in my viewing. In fact the upconversion (used the PS3) made the grain look like noise. If anyone was just considering buying the DVD version due to grain, I recommend paying the extra for HD in either format.

Warner Home Video has confirmed to us that they will be re-issuing the Stanley Kubrick classic 'Full Metal Jacket' in a new "Deluxe Edition" on Blu-ray and HD DVD this October.
'Full Metal Jacket' was initially released on both next-gen formats in 2006, in feature-starved editions that were met with generally tepid reaction from early adopters and reviewers.
When Warnerunveiled plans last week for first-ever next-gen special editions of four other Kubrick classics due October 23 -- including 'A Clockwork Orange,' 'The Shining,' 'Eyes Wide Shut' and '2001: A Space Odyssey' -- 'Full Metal Jacket' was originally absent from that list, but as several eagle-eyed readers pointed out to us over the weekend, the studio has quietly added listings for a 'Full Metal Jacket: Deluxe Edition' to its list of press materials for its upcoming Kubrick collection.
The re-issue of 'Jacket' will join the quartet of other Kubrick releases hitting high-def on October 23, though no tech specs were immediately available on what (if any) elements of the release will receive an upgrade.
List price for 'Full Metal Jacket' will match the other Kubrick releases, with a $28.99 MSRP.
Note also that the original standard Blu-ray and HD DVD editions of 'Full Metal Jacket' will now be discontinued.

They needed to update Full Metal Jacket though... the current release is pretty piss poor for an HD offering. They better remaster it.

from high-def digest...man can't wait to pop Hot Fuzz in now...
"Our site has never reviewed a release that's scored 5 stars overall -- in fact, this entire disc seems too good to be true. Not only is the movie entertaining and satisfying, but the video transfer is gorgeous, the audio packs significant punch, and there are approximately eighteen hours of entertaining supplemental materials.
Judged in comparison to the standard-def DVD, the video and audio package is significantly improved, and this HD DVD includes ten hours of features that aren't even available on the DVD.
Simply put, in my opinion, this is currently the best overall high-def release on the market -- especially when you factor in the price. Purchasing 'Hot Fuzz' on HD DVD is a no-brainer for fans and an easy recommendation for newcomers. This is what high definition is all about."

Heh, reading is fundamental!
The article stated that with the new monster cable, you get a free upgrade for life as technology changes. Sooo if they come out with 10000000p and you need a special cable for it, you get upgraded for free. For life.
However, I have to think that by the time I got my $150 worth, we'd be in a wireless society. Go figure.
But, this is an amazing competitive advantage for those who are in Best Buy and are comparing Monster vs. a competitor's brand right there and then.

First congrats on the stereo :)
PQ and AQ wise HD DVD and BD are exactly the same. Both offer great 1080p and lossless sound. If one movie looks worse over another it's often due to the studio doing a poor job with the transfer.
BD has two things going in it's favor. First it has 7 out of 8 major studios supporting it. Second, it has way more disk space.
HD DVD counters with the least expensive player on the market and superior interactive features and extras content at this point.
If you can afford it, buy both players and enjoy all that HD has to offer. :)

I didn't bother with the Ultimate Collection. If you have the DVD release of the Ultimate collection, you already have all the extras. Plus all the extra in the Ultimate set are standard def. That includes the Animatrix. They are also flipper disks

Well, the PS3 is the best value and probably the best BD player on the market right now. Plus you get a video game system with it. My only 2 complaints about it as a BD player are no IR port (that fancy universal remote won't work with it) and no analogue out for sound (not a big deal for most).
The 360 HD DVD addon will give you a great picture, but if your HT is set up for next gen sound (ie Dolby TruHD, etc), you can't take advantage with the addon. In that case, you'd be better off going with the Toshiba A2, or the A20 if you can afford it.

So. FLIPPING. Pissed.
I’m watching both Bournes in HD before I see the new one… Wed. night was Identity, last night was Supremacy. I opened the Supremacy HD DVD, and popped the disc in.
The player (XA-2) made horrible HORRIBLE noises and then said “invalid disc.”
Me: What the crap?!
I opened and closed the tray again thinking I didn’t center the disc on the tray and part of it was hanging over, and bam. Same thing. Horrible noises and “invalid disc.”
I opened the tray, and flipped the disc over. THE FLIPPING LONG BLACK SECURITY STICKER WAS ON THE BACK OF MY DISC!
First thought: *****! MY HD DVD!
Second thought: *****! MY $500 HD DVD PLAYER!
I can’t believe it.
I took the sticker off, but the disc is now beyond repair. I tried playing it again, but it died in the menu. It wouldn’t eject. It froze the whole player. It was an awful mistake for me to try again but I was just so desperate.
I unplugged the player, and got my disc back.
Luckily I still had my SD DVD version, so I watched that instead.
After watching nothing but HD for months, it was downright scary how sad an SD movie looked. Especially with the best consumer upconverter (under $1k) on the market.
I toughed through it to get the movie over with. But there was some scenes that I thought I was watching an illegal download off the net.
At least the player still works. I would have committed suicide if I broke it.
Anyways, now I’m screwed with my Bourne. Has anyone on here bought Supremacy recently? I bought it forever ago. If yes, is there any way I can borrow your receipt to swap it out with a new one? lol.
Let me know.
Thanks.

Yeah, it's not a big deal...but I do like those cool transitionals that introduce you to the main menu, like the Van Ling's T2 editions. They really are in artform in and of itself.
Jumping straight into the WB logo and 300 intro really caught me off guard....but...it's just nitpickiness on my part.

My NIN: Beside You In Time BD does have a main menu, so they should try to keep it in the mix. Granted some can be a hindrance if not done right, but it's nice to have that gateway at the beginning.

I haven't seen either movie.
Personally, I don't trust AVS for ****.
I have Bullitt, and it looks great as long as you realize it looks how it should - as a movie shot on a certain type of grainy film stock from the 1970s.
I go by what Robert Harris says in his "Few Words About..." columns over on hometheaterforum.com, and he gave Bullitt glowing reviews, and I totally agree with him.

That PS3 deal is a steal, I'd jump all over that if we had a Fry's down here.

No problem. I'd say I go with Robert Harris first, Hometheaterforum.com reviews second, and Highdefdigest.com reviews third. Robert Harris is a motion picture archivist who supervises transfers from time to time, and he is INCREDIBLY knowledgable.
Just realize Bullitt is going to look grainy, grainy, grainy. It's no "King Kong" in visual style, for example.

what do yall mean grain?
In most movies you see grain on the picture..which are, for lack of a better way to describe it, tiny speckles/sand grain-like particles that appear as a coat over the picture. This is just a natural occurrence that varies depending on the type of film used to shoot a movie.
For 300, the entire movie was basically CGI, so there would've been no grain to speak of...however they put in a hefty amount of intentional grain as an effect to make the movie feel more "real," as some believe grain adds a positive element to some movies.
I, personally, dont' care for grain in any capacity. It distracted me from some of the movie in 300 when I saw it in the theater, but it was less evident on the Blu-Ray, surprisingly.

Just like there are movies I love and you probably hate. Everyone has different taste. I thought the movie sucked. Not funny at all.
I like movies like snatch and others but just not Hot fuzz.

It makes you wonder why others are going exclusive to one or the other
Support them both and they will sell
LIke others have said this is still a very niche market and will be for some time
Until HD TVs are in every home there is no advantage to this format

Thing is, not every title it going to sell like that... just the blockbusters.
And unfortunately for HD DVD, Fox and BV are way too paranoid about region coding and DRM to ever move over at this point... sales would have to pick up to DVD levels for them to even consider going neutral. :(

Fox is killing me the most, I need Kingdom of Heaven: Director's Cut in HD very badly.
That, the Disney films, and Casino Royale.

I have to say that the general price of BD movies turns me off of them at the moment. I can't bring myself to pay $30 for a movie, I may or may not watch again at home. Plus, I like to take movies over to my mom or step-mom's house to watch sometimes, and they don't have anything other than standard-def.
I thought the wife would frown on spending $30 on a movie as well, but she was pretty shocked I didn't get the BD version of 300. She seems to like the HD movies in general as well, so I may look into it more in the future.
I do rent the BD version of anything that I can find at Blockbuster when I'm there looking for a movie. Sadly, BB seems to only get one copy of whatever in BD, so I usually don't get it.
Probably the first things I will actually own on BD will be that Spiderman set and Transformers.

You have to buy 3 high def DVD's (doesn't matter if it's all HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, or a combination of the two) in one order, then enter the promo code HDDVD10 (I think that's it).
The site may prompt you and say "save 10% and enter this code blah blah blah," or it may not. You can probably find more info on amazon, highdefdigest.com, or just go straight to google.
