Bought a new receiver for the home theatre... VSX-515. I decided to stay away from an HDMI audio/video pass thru blah blah. My Pioneer HTIB has been very good to me and I was always impressed with it so I wanted to stay with that name. It supports DTS, DD and has power, that's what I care about. Maybe when the prices come down on these new HDMI receivers and they've stood the tribulations of time I'll look into getting one. Gonna stick with a good 'ol optical cable for a while longer.
Just thought I'd mention this is getting returned, it's just not cutting it.

It remains unclear how long Paramount's previously-released Blu-ray titles will remain on store shelves, and/or whether they're even included in the terms of the studio's exclusivity pact with HD DVD. Needless to say, we'll let you know as soon as any official information comes in.

Here are two dumb questions.....
Are all the discs in the Spiderman set in HD? The Amazon description doesn't make that terribly clear, though I assume they are. I just wanted to make sure.
Also, why do all of my movies still have the black bars on the top and bottom of my widescreen TV? I thought that movies weren't supposed to have them, but I am apparently wrong.

Columbia Pictures hasn't said what, if any, of the extras will be in HD or not.
As for the black bars, any movie in a 2.40 or 2.35:1 ratio will have them. You HD tv is only 16:9. There are some movies in that will fit exactly in any HDtv.

I wasn't actually asking about the extras. I meant the movies as a whole. Amazon seems to only describe the version of Spiderman 3. I was hoping they would all be HD and not like all the previous movies on one BR disc or something like that.
Yeah, I don't get the black bars thing.....at least with my 50" TV they aren't as annoying as on the 28" one. :p

1.) I don't believe the Spidey box details have been revealed yet. Of course all 3 movise are in HD with uncompressed audio. My GUESS would be much of (if not all of) the extras will be in HD.
2.) All movies are filmed at different sizes. Here in America, the most common ratios are 1.85:1 and 2.40:1. When a movie is filmed at 1.85:1 will you see no bars. When the first number is bigger (no matter how much bigger) you will see bars. Hey... imagine how much bigger the bars would be on a 1.33:1 full screen tv! To find out what ratio a movie was filmed in, search for the movie at www.imdb.com and click "techical specs." I think Amazon lists ratios in its product listings pages also.

OK, thanks for the info on the Spidey set. I figured that was how it would be, but I wanted to be sure. Amazon just talks about the third movie, so I thought it might be something odd.

Lots and lots of movies are 1.85:1. As a matter of fact, most are - scope, or 2.35:1, is the rarer of the two formats (but not much rarer - probably a 65/35 split at the very most).
HollandX
08-21-2007, 07:21 PM
As a general rule of thumb, most comedies are 1.85:1.
If you watch any TV show in HD (ie Sopranos, Prison Break, 24, Gilmore Girls), they're all 1.85:1.
Plus if you watch any movies in HD on channels like TNT... regardless what the movie has been filmed in (like 2.35:1), it's been cropped to 1.85:1 to fit your screen.
Yes, TV channels still crop movies to fit your screen. It's a brutal practice.

I thought about it, but I'm not going to. I don't really want to spend $300 on a HD-DVD player just to watch one movie. I already have an upconverting DVD player, so I can't even use that to justify part of the cost. Sadly, I'll just have to get the DVD version.
Honestly, I wouldn't even have a Blu-Ray player if I didn't own a PS3. The whole format war really turns me off. I would be one of those people on the fence until it all got settled out.

Correct me if I'm wrong....but these so called "exclusivity" contracts are not forever...aren't they for just 1 year.
I think HD-DVD is just trying to force it's hand into getting more players into households for the next 12-18 months....then they will not re-new these multi-million dollar exclusive contracts

spider-man WHAT THE F)(*#$#()FK#$(UI$(%UR@W(#RK(@#$#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But while the box set will roll out the red carpet for 'Spider-Man 3,' featuring identical specs to the concurrently-released stand-alone Blu-ray edition of the movie (which includes a bonus disc filled with extras, plus PCM 5.1 surround and Dolby TrueHD audio tracks), the first two Spider-Man flicks will come significantly less feature-packed.
Neither 'Spider-Man' nor 'Spider-Man 2' will include any of the bonus features from their original DVD releases, and -- in a first for Sony -- neither will include support for PCM audio. Instead, both 'Spider-Man' and 'Spider-Man 2' will contain Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround tracks only.
For high-def fans of 'Spider-Man 2,' however, all is not lost. The 'High-Def Trilogy' will contain both the theatrical version of the sequel and 'Spider-Man 2.1,' an extended version of the film that was subsequently released on video. Viewers will be able to choose each seamlessly via the Blu-ray format's branching technology for uninterrupted playback.

All is fair in love and war and this, my friend, is war. If the HD DVD camp can buy every studio (except Sony lol) then I say DO IT. Besides, Blu-ray has playing hardball for so long it's good to see HD DVD stand up and not go out like a *****, for a while I was wondering if they were even trying anymore. Right, I agree that if MS is helping then the money doesn't matter. I don't disagree with their strategy, other than the fact that I can't get Transformers on Blu-Ray now. According to everything I see, they were losing market share to Blu-Ray pretty quickly, so they needed to do something.
I just wondered if throwing $150 mil and possilby another $225mil (as reported by HollandX) seemed deperate to anyone else like it does to me. Espeically when they aren't getting the deals for more than a year and a half so far.
How many HD-DVD players do you think will get sold based on this most recent announcement? Will that many people run out to buy one just to see Transformers, Shrek 3, and whatever else on HD-DVD?

I mainly want to toss this one out to the BD only folks... with the Paramount announcement, do you have plans to buy an HD DVD player now or will you stick it out with BD?
No I have no plan on buying a HD-DVD player anytime soon. If I didn't have a PS3 I wouldn't have bought a Blu-ray player either, it was the combo of the functions that sold me. I would not have bought a PS3 at launch either if it didn't play Blu-ray.

Huh, after reading this I double checked the reciept and sure enough I was charged $39.83 for it but the sticker on the case says $25.83. Good thing I haven't opened it yet. I'll take it back and see if they'll give me back the difference. Bummer, here I thought Combo's were actually going down in price. :(

Really though, would a HD-DVD version of those 2 movies be that much better than an upconverted DVD version?
In my eyes no. Even when I buy Blu-ray, it is only something that would really enhance the experience.

It will really depend on the quality of the transfer.
But I agree, comedies aren't always the best for showing off HD.

good point. Pirates will sell well (I'll be buying it), i have my questions about spiderman, though. I think a lot of people hated it in the theaters, and it's got a $49.99 MSRP, which is insane. I know most retailers will have it for less, but imagine someone on the fence going into FYE and seeing it for $44.99 there...ouch.
Agreed!! SM3 blew. I'll probably ask for it for Christmas, but I won't drop my own cash on it. Honestly, I'll still be on the fence about it, since I'll never watch it anyway as it was such utter crap.

I thought the same about SM... but look at how well it did at the box office. Whether people liked it or not, it's going to sell VERY well in both DVD and BD.
Although judging by preorders, most BD folk are buying the boxed set.

Just FYI for anyone interested....Microsoft's response to the payoff claims.
Hello everyone,
My name is Kevin Collins and I have worked for Microsoft for the last 14 years working on database technology (Jet and SQL Mobile). I have been involved in HD DVD for almost three years; from the HD DVD Video specification process in the DVD Forum to current promotion of HD DVD features. I met a lot of you with the HTF chat in January of this year and hope to do another chat when my schedule permits to have more ongoing discussions. For those that don’t know me, I am a home theater enthusiast. Starting in 1992 I had a Pioneer laser disc player, 1994 I had a Pioneer Elite 51” RPTV, in 1997 I had the Sony DVD player. In 1999 I moved to watching DVD’s on a HTPC on a Sony G70 on a 8ft wide Stewart Filmscreen Studio Tek 130 screen and currently view HD content on a Marantz 1080P DLP PJ with BOTH formats on a Stewart Filmscreen Gray Hawk RS screen. So, even though I work at Microsoft, I have been a home theater enthusiast well before I started on HD DVD at Microsoft.
At any rate, since I am constantly traveling for HD DVD I haven't had time to become active on this forum. I’m currently on vacation but something has come up that even my wife hasn’t been able to prevent me from responding to. It has to do with posts regarding why and how Microsoft supports HD DVD. Here is an example of what I am referring to:
http://www.thedigitalbits.com/mytwocentsa141.html#dp
“8/20/07 -- Well... the high-definition format war just got more confusing for consumers, and you can thank the hubris of the folks at Microsoft for it. Their HD-DVD format (because I'm sorry, can anyone really say it still belongs to Toshiba at this point?) badly needed a shot in the arm going into the holiday season, and just got it thanks to suitcases full of cash from the Microsoft camp”
I want to go on the record stating that Microsoft did not provide any financial incentives to Paramount/Dreamworks recent decision to support HD DVD. This type of “reporting” amazes me and I challenge anyone to provide proof around these statements. They are unfounded and inaccurate.
I’m not writing this to debate opinions on why one format will or will not prevail. I’m a writing this to provide some factual information on why and how Microsoft supports HD DVD to hopefully put to rest some of the incorrect information I see online.
Originally Microsoft supported BOTH formats, then two CES’s ago, Microsoft changed to only supporting HD DVD for the following three reasons:
1) Mandatory Managed copy. BD has since also supported this and we are all waiting on the “final agreement” to be completed from AACS.
2) Guaranteed hardware features on ALL HD DVD players. The mandatory features here being persistent storage, secondary video decoder and networking. Microsoft simply believes, as do the studios, including Disney, that interactivity is a reason for consumers to move from DVD. Please reference this document for reasons that the Warner Home Video and Disney put together in the DVD Forum: http://www.dvdforum.org/images/Requi...0HD%20DVD%20Vi deo%20Application-July2005.pdf. Warner Home Video proves this out by releasing different features in 300 and Blood Diamond (networking – sharing scenes with friends and PIP) and Paramount did it with MI:3 last year with PIP only in the HD DVD version.
3) Cheaper, higher yield and greater availability of replication. A perfect case point for this is the European market where there are a multitude of HD DVD titles that are only available from the BD studios in the US. The reason for this? Cheaper replication costs and the ability to use local replicators to produce discs. BD50 discs are only produced at two plants in the world (Terre Haute, IN and Japan). Thanks to no region control in HD DVD we can all legally enjoy “Mr & Mrs Smith”, “The Prestige” and others from sites http://xploitedcinema.com/catalog/hd-dvds-c-35.html and http://amazon.co.uk/s******sr_st/203-...t=-releasedate.
For the record, Microsoft’s involvement in HD DVD rotates around supporting the format by:
1) Xbox 360 HD DVD drive
2) VC-1 support for BOTH formats
3) HDi support
4) Work in the DVD Forum from working groups up to the steering committee.
This type of support shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone as this is what Microsoft has historically done, support developers to use tools to provide the best experience for their customers.
While a lot of people disagree with data posted on Harry Knowles site (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articl...oap060107.html) Harry accurately reported why Paramount is supporting HD DVD moving forward when he said (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/33722):
“For those of us consuming these products - it's easy to simply believe decisions are made due to just advertising incentives, but when you speak to the technology guys inside these studios - you hear that HD DVD is cheaper, serves the technological needs of the High Definition format, that the programming languages are an extension of the established DVD format - so it is easier for them to work with. This decision is about more than an intial Toshiba advertising incentive - the decision was made at a tech level, an economic level and about a cost delivery level to the public. Paramount made this decision from the tech guys up.”
I hope this clears up the misinformation that has been reported regarding Microsoft’s involvement in the Paramount/Dreamworks decision or in the “rumored” involvement with Warner. For the record, I respect Bill in that we are both enthusiast from the days of laser discs and we are both interested in seeing movies in HD the way that they were originally on film. In the meantime, I look forward to continue showing everyone, with shipping titles, why Microsoft believes in HD DVD.
Best,
- kevin

I guess I still find it hard to believe that the tech guys that program the menu features and whatever else on a HD-DVD have enough pull to get the bosses of the studio to say they only want to support HD-DVD.
Let's face it, those guys didn't get to become rich studio owners by being dumb and giving things away for free. They asked for cash and other incentives and got it.
Maybe HD-DVD really is the better format. I have no idea. But I'm real sure they got something ($$$$) in return for their loyalty.

Thinking about getting a HD DVD player now, but worried Blu Ray is going to win maybe. This is the only issue I have I guess. I have a 360, not the Elite so I'm missing out HDMI quality unless I put the money out. What do you think is the best way to go?

There really isn't such a thing as "HDMI quality", unless you are referring to 1080p - which can be done on any 360 via VGA cables (someone can correct me if I'm wrong, which I may well be). Even then, 720p HD-DVD's look spectacular.
I say go for it. You can currently get the HD-DVD player for 179.99 w/o tax from amazon, with 2 free movies up front, + you send away for 5 more movies. A great deal, in my opinion. And, even if HD-DVD loses the war, your discs aren't going to be rendered useless.

With the Paramount/Dreamworks deal, neither side is going to lose now. By the time enough people start buying these to where the studios actually make money, there will be dual-format players for a reasonable price and it'll all work on everything....more or less.

Just ordered my second round on this...i'm definitely done now...probably.
Monster House blu-ray

That's makes 7 high-def movies today for about $115 dlvd = $16.40 per movie. Damn good deal for new, sealed HD media.

Whoa!! Now that is a Blu-Ray list. Something is getting bought from that.
I need suggestions for a 6th movie. Right now I have POTC 1&2 and 300 in one order. I have The Patriot and X3 in the other.
What is a good third movie? Fifth Element? (I can't remember if I like this movie, but everyone gushes over it all the time.)
I'm looking for something that is pretty rewatchable and with good picture quality. Based on my previous selections, I obviously like action movies. Comedies and sci-fi/fantasy are my other likes.
Departed is out. I liked it but the wife hates it and I won't ever watch it twice.

Would I ever watch either of them more than once? Crank seems like it would be a generic shooter that I would find dull after seeing once.

It's definitely candy for when you want to go into a movie brain dead...but I've watched it 3 times already. If you like stupid action, you'll get replay value out of Crank.
Fifth Element I've seen about 8 times so far. The remastered blu-ray is such a thing of beauty you'll be popping it in not only to watch it, but to demo your system for friends and family.
Also, The Guardian I thought was a good movie with top tier PQ.

Kingdom of Heaven is an alright movie, kind of long, great PQ though, I purchased Relentness enemies a while ago when it came out, it is like a 45 minute documentary about lions, Jeremy Irons does the narration, it was a so so movie, nothing like Planet Earth though, if it is free and you can't figure out anything else to get it's a cool movie. I have a lot of the off beat not easy to find Blu-Ray titles so if you have any other questions on movies that you aren't sure about ask away

I'm got a question, perhaps someone can help me with. I purchased a Samsung LNT4042H along with a HT-X50 (Home theatre in a box) and I'm using a toslink digital audio cable to connect the two when watching DirecTV and using my 360. After about an hour, hour and a half of use, the speakers begin to chirp intermitently.
The sounds seems to fluxuate between the 5 speakers. This doesn't happen when using HDMI to watch a DVD. There's another issue there altogether. But my question is, does it sound like the problem may be my toslink cable? I got a cheapo one from Amazon.com that I'm using.
Thanks.

I'm definitely not the authority on this, but I wouldn't think it's the cable. It's my understanding that digital audio cables are much like HDMI, they either work or they don't, there's no grades of quality...but again don't quote me.
Also, there's always the possibility that the cable's faulty....meaning there's something wrong with it outside of the general quality.

The new machines should be out sometime this fall.

The lowest end model (A2, A3) are only 1080i, but if you don't have a 1080p tv nor plan on getting one in the next year I wouldn't worry about it.
Basically the high end model has HDMI 1.3 where the others don't. So if you want to run TruHD or other lossless codecs over HDMI, you'll need that. If you're still in the DD 5.1 and DTS world, the A20 or A30 will do you just fine. :)

TMNT
Our favorite ninja turtles are back in a new adventure. Going into this movie, I did not realize that it begins where the previous movies left off. I thought the franchise had been restarted with the switch from live action to computer animation. Oops.
The movie gives a blink and you’ll miss it introduction to the characters, place, and time. If you are unfamiliar with the characters large (the Turtles themselves) and small (Casey Jones), you probably will not appreciate them as much. While the Turtles are obviously the main attraction, the movie is Raphael-centric. I would be hard pressed not to call it “The Raphael and Leonardo Show” with everyone else playing second fiddle.
TMNT waffles between being a fun kid movie and a serious adult affair. The writers failed to properly strike a balance between the two. If I had the plot (especially the generic angry monsters’ goals and weaknesses) repeated to me one more time, I was going to hurl something through my TV. Yet, in between some awful one-liners, there is a silver lining. The scenes written towards the adult are gripping and actually near brilliance.
The CGI is phenomenal. Without being hampered by oversized animatronics suits, we finally get to see the Turtles saunter and fight like true ninjas. There is one fight scene in the rain that will become a reference point to show off your shiny new home theater.
Recommended if you’re a hardcore turtle fan, looking for another quality reference scene, or under 10 years old. Very mildly recommended for the rest of you looking for a CGI superhero movie.

Stranger Than Fiction
Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) wakes up in a real life story starring him. Each step he takes and each thought he makes is poetically narrated to him by a charming female British voice (Emma Thompson).
Perhaps intentionally, I never felt a part of the story. I always was aware I was simply watching it unfold. Just like Harold Crick.
It was shocking to read on the Internet how much Maggie Gyllenhaal’s romantic character is hated. I found her mannerisms sweet and neither forced nor obnoxious. I enjoyed her performance, and impatiently wait to see her Rachel Dawes. As usual, Dustin Hoffman was brilliant in a supporting role.
While I did enjoy it, the movie never quite pulls the trigger when I want it to. One of the biggest questions of the movie, “How did this happen to him?” is neither answered nor explained. Perhaps it is all just fiction.
Recommended if you like quirky and romantic fantasy movies with a little comedy.

So, I guess I should come here instead of making a new thread.
In september my best friend and me will move in together in an appartment, and we're looking to buy an HD-ready flatscreen LCD television. Our price range will be somewhere around 800 dollars, but that's not really important.
What IS important is the fact that neither of us is a tech-geek. We've seen tv's for half that price with a 32" screen but with 1000:1 contrast. All I know when I see that is that the more expensive ones have like 5000 or even 7000:1. (I'm not even checking out the REALLY expensive ones)...
This is the one I'm talking about
http://www.fnac.be/nl/Catalog/Detail.aspx?cIndex=6&catalog=immagineSuono&categoryN=TV%20&%20Hifi&category=tvlcd&product=10134124&scategory=tvlcd3032
So, I humbly ask for help.
Contrast, brightness, resolution, response time, etc...
What are the "ideal" numbers for those properties?
What's the best I can hope to find in the price category I've just mentioned?
Thanks in advance :)

I'm no expert compared to some of the other guys on here, but I pay enough attention to get you started in the right direction.
The better the contrast ratio, the better the picture will look overall. It makes the blacks and other colors seem more life-like and real. Maybe starting at 5000:1 is a good idea.
Resolution is a bit more tricky. For anything under 50", you don't really need 1080p. 1080i is great if you can get it. Otherwise 720p is fine as well.
I'm not sure about response time on LCDs, but the lower the response time, the better as well. Under 5ns for a PC monitor is good, so I assume it is the same for a TV.
I think Sharp and Toshiba make good LCD TVs. Maybe Phillips too.
If I were you, I might try saving up a bit more cash and getting something like this. I've seen this TV in stores before and it is pretty sweet. It is a plasma, not an LCD, but I think it is a good TV. Might even be able to find it online for cheaper and in your price range.

If you're absolutely set on LCD, you might want to go for a very high contrast radio...10,000 to 1 or so. LCD's historically have lighter blacks than plasma, but I think that's been improved with recent generations (much like burn-in has been reduced greatly on plasma screens)
I agree that 1080p isn't needed for even anything at or under 60"....50 is probably the breaking point to where you'd ever see a difference. Both times in the last couple years that I bought an HDTV (62" DLP and recently a 50" plasma for the bedroom) I opted for the larger size at 768p native resolution over losing 8-10 inches just to get 1080p for the same price.

I pretty much agree with everything here. To be honest if the original Turtles movie ever came out on HD DVD I'd rather own it. I was a little disappointed in this one. Also, I can't remember the exact running time but it was a fairly short movie, pretty sure it just barely reached the hour and a half mark.

Well, he really is right. This is why I really hate LCDs. I think the picture always looks washed out on them. I'm guessing this is because the contrast ratio is not so good.
A low contrast ratio will make everything look flat. People in shadows, or shadows won't show as well. Dark scenes will be really difficult to watch as everything will just be the same greyish color.
Buying a TV with a low contrast ratio will only upset you in the long run. Have you looked at some of them in the store yet? It is pretty easy to tell the difference.

Ultraviolet
Recently, there was a poll on the IMDB asking which actress is most typecast. While Drew Barrymore won, I still stand by my vote of Milla Jovovich.
Ultraviolet can be summed up in three words: Style. Over. Substance. Set in the late 21st century, there is a war between diseased (aka superhuman) rebels and healthy (normal) humans. Violet (Jovovich) shockingly is a skimpy-clothes-wearing sexy martial arts heroine
The plot is nonsensical. The fight scenes even get boring as the viewer rarely ever feels Violet is in any real danger. She could single handedly find bin Laden and kill the entire Taliban before the next commercial break.
There was however one stylish attack scene I had to rewind to watch over again. Think the arrow scene in Hero.
Very mildly recommended if you’re in a brain dead mood to listen to techno music and watch colors flash before your eyes. Strong recommendation to avoid for everyone else.

Æon Flux
It’s so ironic I watched Æon Flux soon after Ultraviolet. I didn’t know the plot of either ahead of time. They’re like... THE SAME. Only Flux is way better. Set in the 25th century, a skimpy-clothes-wearing sexy martial arts heroine (Charlize Theron) leads rebels against the evil tyrannical government. That sounds familiar.
I actually enjoyed this movie. It's great eye candy. I was even pleasantly surprised by the answers to the movie’s mysteries.
I don’t remember the TV show from when I was younger, so I can’t tell you how this compares.

The Marine
The Marine is a throwback to 80’s action movies. Roar, boom, punch, boom, one-liner, boom. It’s Commando for 2006 with popular professional wrestler John Cena (in his film debut) subbing in for Arnold.
The movie just isn’t any good, though. Even with a runtime of 93 minutes, the movie drags. The characters are annoying. The simple plot and stupid dialog aren’t even saved by any level of comic relief. The Marine certainly has its share of action and stuff getting blown up. Don’t worry. If you blink and miss an explosion, just wait another few seconds. Except, even the explosions aren’t even creative or fun. Fire makes things go boom. We get it.
I like John Cena. I want him to do well. But this was awful. And my, how Robert Patrick has fallen.
I expect this movie to be repeated endlessly over weekends at 1am on USA.
Unless you’re a big John Cena fan or really want to see stuff get blown up, strong recommendation to avoid.
