Quick question:
I was going to hook up my PS3 to my TV via HDMI. I remember when I hooked up my old cable box to HDMI, I couldn't access certain features of screen adjustment - mostly geometry, iirc. Is this because I was using DVI to HDMI, because my TV is a piece of crap, or because HDMI geometry is "set"?
Just wondering.
And to clarify, by geometry, I meant I couldn't move the height of the picture, width of the picture, etc. IIRC.

My first HD DVD purchase regret: Alpha Dog. This story could have been told in about 15 minutes but is dragged on for what feels like forever. Sharon Stone (who I didn't even know was in the movie, but she has a minor supporting role) is embarassingly bad in this movie, close to the end. It's been a while since I've actually forced myself to sit though such a painful (she would not ST F U) scene but I did it. PQ was okay, but nothing great.
Stay away, stay far, far away.

I've watched the first two disks of Heroes so far... hardly reference HD material (it is tv after all), but if you haven't seen the show, it's so worth the watch.
The first two episodes are pretty slow (I still need to watch the 72 minute intro pilot), but things pick up for ep 3 (disk 2). :)

If I had to do it over again, I'd still get it in HD... the PQ is pretty good for the most part, but I never realized it had intentional grain before. Just don't expect Corpse Bride or Hulk like PQ.

Watched Poseidon today, one of the ones I got with the recent Amazon deal....4/5 PQ for most of the movie. I actually thought this was a really good action flick...the effects make it, for me, much more entertaining than the first one...albeit without Gene Hackman.
Also bought Assault on Precinct 13 HD DVD online just now. I enjoyed it when I rented it mnoths back, plus I'm a sucker for anything with Gabriel Byrne.

Specs in for 'Die Hard' Releases; Fox Says No to Unrated 'Live Free' Blu-ray
Wed Sep 05, 2007 at 07:55 AM ET
Fox Home Entertainment has released full specs for its highly-anticipated Blu-ray releases of the 'Die Hard' franchise, but fans looking forward to an unrated high-def version of 'Live Free or Die Hard' are in for a disappointment.
As we first reported last week, Fox plans to bring 'Live Free or Die Hard' to Blu-ray on November 20, day-and-date with three standard-def DVD editions.
On that same day, the studio will also release a first-ever Blu-ray box set version of 'The Die Hard Trilogy,' containing the first three films in the series, 'Die Hard,' 'Die Hard 2: Die Harder' and 'Die Hard with a Vengeance'.
As if that wasn't exciting enough, the original announcement for 'Live Free or Die Hard' last week stated that the film would hit Blu-ray in an unrated cut of the movie, featuring additional footage not seen in the PG-13 theatrical cut. In fact, the announcement was posted on Fox's promotional web site (www.foxbd.com) alongside box art that also indicated an unrated Blu-ray edition of the film.
Alas, we've now received the full press release for 'Live Free or Die Hard' from Fox, and despite earlier indications, it seems that although two (of the three) DVD editions will include the unrated edition, the Blu-ray will contain the PG-13 version of the film only. When asked about the discrepancy with the box art displayed on their own web site, the studio told us that the "unrated" box art is inaccurate, and that revised artwork will be revealed in the coming days.
A screenshot of the 'Live Free or Die Hard' box art from the www.foxbd.com website. Fox says revised artwork will be unveiled shortly.
On the bright side, the just-released specs promise an otherwise full-featured Blu-ray release for the fourth film in the franchise, boasting each of the two-disc standard-def DVD's supplements, plus at least one Blu-ray exclusive. Among the bonus features are an audio commentary with Bruce Willis, director Len Wiseman and editor Nicolas De Toth, the ten-part documentary " Analog Hero in a Digital World: Making of Live Free or Die Hard," a 25-minute conversation with Willis and filmmaker Kevin Smith, an additional featurette, a music video (with its own making-of) and the theatrical trailer.
The Blu-ray will also include the BD-Java interactive game "Black Hat Intercept," exclusive to the high-def release.
Tech specs include a BD-50 dual-layer disc featuring 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, a DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround track, and D-Box enhancement.
Similarly, each of the film's in 'The Die Hard Trilogy,' will receive the BD-50 treatment with 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video and DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio.
Supplements will mirror those found on the previous standard-def versions, including multiple audio commentaries, featurettes, storyboard comparisons and multiple trailers and TV spots.
As previously reported, the list price for 'Live Free or Die Hard' is $39.98, while 'The Die Hard Trilogy' will retail for $99.98.
Fox currently has no plans to release the first three 'Die Hard' films separately, nor will there be a four-pack continuing both 'Live Free or Die Hard' and 'The Die Hard Trilogy.'

Man, a lot of movies in the long run we know they'll double dip, but for some of them why do they make it so obvious? No unrated cut? That is pure BS and if I had Blu-ray I wouldn't buy that box set and wait for the real thing. What a low blow to Die Hard fans.
PrimeBane
09-05-2007, 10:22 AM
It's typical Fox BS... they've been doing it for years with DVD.
They may have some great movies, but they sure screw over buyers in the home video market. :(
HollandX
09-05-2007, 10:30 AM
It's not just Fox.
Why is Sony barebonesing Spidey 1 and 2? Why aren't they getting uncompressed PCM sountracks?
Why are there two versions of Troy out for HD DVD? Theatrical and Director's Cut? Why can't they be in one release?
I love how the BD camp laughs at HD DVDs for the tiny disc space HD DVDs have.
"Ok, you're right. BD is superior. Can we have the version of Die Hard 4 that is 3 minutes longer?"
"No."

I agree, neither format should be bare-bonesing anything right now, if anything they should be cramming as much extra crap on each disc to get people to pass on the DVD version and want to get the HD version. Then again it's the studios decision and not the individual formats decision I guess. Maybe they figure they can make more $$ waiting until more people jump into the HD world and then double dip with the stuff they should have put on the first release.
PrimeBane

Both are lossless formats. You'd have to have the BEST hearing in the world (and probably a $10k plus HT system) to tell the difference between PCM and TruHD if you could at all.
I agree, it should have a PCM track especially with the space. But TruHD is just as good. :)
Don't fall for the BD fud on PCM.

Need some help on a small problem I'm having.
My new plasma TV has a habit of giving me a quick black screen when I'm playing a movie on my PS3 (can be DVD or blu-ray). It's like a quick blip and then goes right back to the movie. Does it for PS3 games, too. A few have been brand new movies, so I don't think it's from scratches or anything.
My other TV doesn't do this, and it only happens with my PS3.
Is it possible I have a faulty HDMI cable? I can't think of any other reason why this would be happening.
Any thoughts?

How often does this happen? My Sony TV and PS3 sometimes do this as well. Though not nearly frequently enough to be irritating. Usually it does it right when it starts up. Like the PS3 will be on for about 10 seconds, then it blinks blank and comes right back. Rarely does it actually happen during a game or movie.
I have a monoprice HDMI cable as well.

Not ANOTHER Hi-Def Format! Does It Have A Chance?
Thursday, September 06, 2007
CEDIA is the "Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association", and this week (Sept. 5-9) they're holding their annual Expo in Denver. There's a lot of hi-def media talk going on there since it started yesterday, with each side claiming better hardware sales than the other, depending on what point of view they use. We've been deep in the middle of a hi-def home video format war for over a year now, with rivals HD DVD (which launched its first discs on 4/18/2006) and Blu-ray Disc (whose discs debuted on 6/20/2006) going at it tooth-and-nail. Each holds a very small piece of the overall home video pie, with most of the industry pundits agreeing that any recent single best-selling DVD would probably sell more copies in a week or two than all the hi-def discs of both formats which have sold since launch.
It's kind of like comparing hybrid cars vs. all-electric cars, and trying to decide which one's better on it's merits, and also measure which one is selling better. Yeah, they're both newer technology, with obvious benefits over the old technology. And obviously one of them is selling better than the other, and is better-supported than the other among manufacturers and consumers. But neither hybrid car sales nor all-electric car sales hold a candle - or even a spark - compared to good old gas car sales...it's the de facto standard and doesn't look like it's gonna disappear too soon. Right now, Blu-ray and HD DVD is kinda like that: DVD is still embedded as the de facto standard, and the new formats aren't making a significant dent in DVD's market share. At least not yet.
So it's still early enough in the hi-def disc game, thinks New Medium Enterprises ("NME"), to introduce a 3rd contender in the contest. And so they have. Yesterday at the CEDIA show, amidst presentations by Toshiba for HD DVD and by Sony for Blu-ray, NME put on an exhibition of their own. And also issued a press release . The UK-based company announced the USA launch of the HD VMD format.
HD VMD stands for High Definition Versatile Multilayer Disc. NME's specs say that this is a fully-capable hi-def player, with ability to produce up to 1920x1080p video resolution, 7.1 sound channels in both Dolby and DTS formats, a data transfer rate of 45 Mbps (right in between HD DVD's ~36 Mbps rate and Blu-ray's ~54 Mbps rate, and significantly higher than DVD's ~11 Mbps), a video transfer rate to match, HDMI port, USB port, internet connectivity, and capable of playing (and upconverting) DVD discs. Current disc capacities are up to 30GB on a single-sided disc, according to the press release. Players are thinner and lighter than most of the competition, and would be available in a variety of colors that include White, Jet Black, Solid Grey, and Flaming Red.
Cost for the player? At launch in the USA, the price is just $199.99.
http://www.tvshowsondvd.net/graphics/news3/HDVMD.jpg
Wow. That's the price point that Toshiba has been struggling to get their HD DVD players down to (and reportedly will achieve later this year, although from a manufacturer that big name retailers like Wal-Mart say they have no current plans to carry). But NME plans to start at that price point, and work their way down from there. One reason they do that, though, is because they use the "older technology" red laser, like a DVD does. Blu-ray and HD DVD use a "newer technology" blue laser. NME feels that it won't matter, though, if the video quality is the same hi-def 1080p levels as the other two.
At the announcement yesterday, no studio support in the USA was given by name yet. However, the press release addresses that by saying "HD VMD is currently being embraced by content providers around the globe, offering consumers a broad option of content. From U.S. to India to France to China, content from the world's leading film markets will be available to all. VMD is currently being adopted by content providers and distributors in dozens of regions worldwide, including Australia, Brazil, Central Europe, China, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Japan, the Middle East Russia, Scandinavia, and the United States." Elsewhere on NME's site, it is prominently mentioned several times that films "from Hollywood" will be available on VMD.
And why not? One of the advantages that VMD is supposed to have to the studios is that their discs will be cheaper to produce. They indicate that the manufacturing cost of the physical disc will be around $1 per disc, just a bit more than it is for a DVD. That's about one-half to one-third the cost-per-disc of the blue-laser competitors, meaning that consumers may not only see cheaper hardware; they might also see cheaper films as well.
What does all this mean to a site called "TVShowsOnDVD"? Well, it's another format. So far there are 20 TV-on-BD titles either released or announced, and 14 TV-on-HD DVD titles either released or announced. Could there be TV-on-VMD in our future? Gord and I don't know...but if there is, you can count on us to cover it!
Stay tuned.

Disney Investigating Reported Framing Issues on 'POTC' Blu-ray
Fri Sep 07, 2007 at 11:00 AM ET
The discovery of apparent framing issues on Disney's Blu-ray release of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' has caused a mini-firestorm among early adopters online, and now the studio says it's looking into the problem.
'The Curse of the Black Pearl' first hit stores this past May, as one of the most highly-anticipated Blu-ray releases on the format thus far, and it earned high marks from most reviewers (including our own Peter Bracke).
More recently, however, reports have surfaced online that the disc suffers from significant framing problems that wreak havoc with the film's original aspect ratio
The story first gained traction early last week when an eagle-eyed AVS Forum member named Denner posted a series of side-by-side comparisons (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=898666) of the same scenes on both the Blu-ray and the standard-def DVD versions of 'Curse of the Black Pearl.'
The screen captures present stark and compelling evidence that numerous sections of the high-def version are noticeably mis-framed, resulting in such glaring crops as the one captured below, as posted by master AVS screencapper Xylon:
http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/images/post/3/3571/original.jpeg http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/images/post/3/3572/original.jpeg
The same frame from 'Curse of the Black Pearl,' as captured on both the DVD and the Blu-ray.
Since its original posting last week, Denner's AVS Forum thread has been viewed over 25,000 times, and has spawned several popular "companion threads" both at AVS and elsewhere.
We contacted Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment about the apparent issue, and were told that they are now aware of the potential problem with 'The Curse of the Black Pearl' Blu-ray release and are investigating the matter, but have no official statement at this time.
Needless to say, we'll keep you posted as soon as any official word comes in from the studio. Stay tuned...

OK guys, weird question:
Got the PS3 today finally, hooked it up via HDMI. When I pressed yes to "detect optimal settings", the TV said output: 1080p.
I'm 99% sure its not a 1080p TV. Is it just accepting the 1080p signal, and then downsizing to 720p, the native rez?
It's an HP 58W or some nonsense, a DLP that isn't made any longer.
I think I love this PS3 guy, by the way. what a pretty system.

When Fox goes neutral (I hope :p ) I could see myself paying a few hundred (maybe $300 or so) for something like that. Also I'm super lazy when it comes to getting up and changing discs so it's going to be awesome when these companies get around to releasing the few TV series' I want. I'm hoping for a season of, say The Simpsons to fit on one disc and have one other disc for special features. If they packaged 5 seasons together in a set that would only be 10 discs. Just made the switch from Comcast to DirecTV. Huge risk, knowing DirecTV's reputation for "HD-Lite" but I'm hoping the new satellite and the MPEG4 decoders will give them enough bandwidth to actually send out a decent HD signal. Anyone else been following and anticipating when Directv10 lights up? There's 70 HD channels in Engineering mode right now, ready for release. To be fair, a good chunk of these are Regional Sports Networks but there's more on the horizon. I'm sick of waiting for Comcast to employ Switched Digital Video and the Tivo software - seems like it's never going to happen. Who do you guys use as your HD programming provider?

Plans to ban plasma TV's
THE Conservatives will propose banning plasma screens and other energy-guzzling electrical goods in a report to be unveiled next week.
The proposals target white goods like fridges and freezers, as well as TVs, personal computers and DVD players that use too much energy or operate on stand-by.
The ideas come from a Conservative group set up by David Cameron to develop policies to protect the environment and although the measures to make household electrical appliances more energy efficient are not binding on Mr Cameron, they are thought likely to be warmly received by the Tory leader.
The group will also suggest scrapping Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a measure of the nation’s success in favour of a model that measures people’s happiness drawn up up by Friends of the Earth.
Under the proposals, a cap could be set on the energy use of each electrical appliance, and those exceeding limits could be banned from sale in the UK.
A new labelling requirement could be introduced to inform consumers of products’ annual energy consumption compared with other similar appliances.
And there could be a ban on electrical goods with stand-by lights which can stay on indefinitely. Some 2 per cent of Britain’s total electricity use is currently taken up by appliances left on stand-by rather than being switched off.
The proposals are set to be unveiled on Thursday in the final report of the Tories’ Quality of Life Policy Group, chaired by former Environment Secretary John Gummer and green activist Zac Goldsmith, a Conservative spokesman confirmed.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has already announced his ambition to “eliminate” the stand-by function on appliances, which was blasted by the Government’s energy review last year as a waste of electricity.
The report is expected to focus on plasma-screen TVs as particularly wasteful of electricity, and it is thought that many models would fall foul of proposed energy cap unless dramatically more efficient technology is developed.
Householders are also expected to be offered tax cuts potentially worth thousands of pounds to make their homes more energy-efficient.
Mr Gummer warned: “We live in a joined-up world and yet we organise our lives in silos. The imperative of global warming demands that we change that approach utterly - not just governments, but businesses, groups and individuals.”

Ok, I'm about to buy a tv... I found this store that sells televisions at seriously reduced prices, so I ask you guys... Which one should I get? There's lcd and plasma in there, sizes ranging from 26 over 32 to 40 inch.
First of all, there are a couple of brands I can choose from: LG (plasma), Hitachi (plasma and lcd), Sharp (lcd), Philips (lcd) and Samsung (lcd). Which of these is considered to be good/bad, and why? (with good and bad I mean if a particular brand is considered to be better than another, for example, a bmw is considered to be "better" than hyundai, but that doesn't mean a hyundai is bad. You get the idea.)
Off to the models I can choose from:
Hitachi 37LD6600: lcd, 37inches diagonal. I've heard the normal price is about 1900 euros or 2600 dollars, the store has it for 699 (967 dollars).
http://www.loveno.be/product/10304/Hitachi-37LD6600-37-inch-LCD-TV-HD-Ready.html
Samsung LE26R41: lcd, 26 inches
Normally priced at 1000 euros or 1385 dollars, I can get it for 400 (553).
http://www.trustedreviews.com/tvs/review/2006/05/31/Samsung-LE26R41BDX-26in-LCD-TV/p1
Samsung LE32R51B: lcd, 26 inches.
Normally priced at around 1400 euros or 2000 dollars, I can get if for 599 or 829 dollars.
http://www.samsung.com/nl/products/tv/lcdtv/le32r51b.asp?page=Specifications
And then there is a 40 inch LG plasma (from the Flatron series) that's about a year old, which the store didn't have the model number of, priced at 800 euros or a bit more than a 1000 bucks. There was also a supposedly new Sharp Lcd (32 inches) and...
Philips 26PFL3312. I didn't get the price though. I was rushed.
http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/television/philips-26pfl3312/
Please help me out. I'll be watching basic cable, regular dvd's, and playing xbox360.
Thanks a million.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that the Sony store has a new Bravia (lcd, 26 or 32 inch, I forgot) for about 900 dollars.
PrimeBane
09-15-2007, 09:47 PM
Picture wise, you'd probably be most happy with the 40" LG plasma... as long as it wasn't a floor model.

Hey guys, another question for you...although this is technically not HD-related. I have an older Kenwood receiver that I recently broke out to use in my bedroom (a VR-305 if it matters). It says it supports surround sound, but since it's older there's no HDMI or Optical audio inputs...will a composite input still work for surround sound? I'm just trying to do 3 speakers, a center and two on the front sides. Thanks for any help.
PrimeBane
09-16-2007, 11:58 AM
Composite is good for one channel each... if your receiver has connections for analogue 5.1 and your source has the same then you can take advantage.
The other option is digital coax... it should be an orange connection.
JaylisJayP
09-16-2007, 12:06 PM
the source is a PS3...
PrimeBane
09-16-2007, 12:22 PM
Well, you have a couple of choices... this is assuming your receiver will accept a digital coax (aka S/PDIF).
You can try to find a 3rd party cable with the digital coax.
You can try your luck with one of these.

Hmm, thought about Planet earth, will have to get it then. Already have children of men, but if you think its Worth to get it in HD i'll do it, Serenity is a must, forgot about that. King Kong? Although i'd love to see that T-Rex fight again in HD, i can't stand that movie. I'll have to get the matrix trilogy though, since i don't have them anyway. Transformers i'll get when its released in october. I just gotta buy that HD player now :D

Well, if nature shows aren't your thing, don't get Planet Earth... I don't own it as it's really not my cup of tea.
I thought the PQ in Children of Men was excellent... it helps that it's one of my fav movies now as well. :)
If you get the 360 addon, you get KK for free.

Yeah, there's usually a select few movies every year which I'll make sure to get the day they're released. This is one of them. It will be a good day. :D

Death Proof will be on HD DVD in Germany if you want to import it... I haven't heard anything about Planet Death yet. Weinstein has been brutal with their HD releases. :(

flux...it's definitely not what people would say is "the norm" for a must-have HD DVD, but my latest favorite is the German Silent Hill import. I thought it was a very cool horror movie and the HD DVD PQ gets a 10/10 in my book, as opposed to the U.S. blu-ray release that was reportedly plagued with problems.
