'300' HD DVD Goes Non-Combo For Toshiba Bundle
Fri Sep 21, 2007 at 10:02 AM ET

Answering the cries of HD DVD/DVD combo-haters everywhere, Warner has issued a non-combo edition of '300,' but there's a catch -- you'll need to buy a new Toshiba HD DVD player to get it.

As we first reported several weeks back, consumers buying Toshiba's third-generation HD DVD players will receive a total of seven free HD DVD discs, including two of the format's most popular titles -- Warner's '300' and Universal's 'Bourne Identity' -- bundled right in the box.

Now that the first of the new players have begun shipping, we've learned that the edition of '300' that comes in the box differs in one crucial way from the HD DVD/DVD combo version that was released in the US this past July: it drops the combo disc's DVD flipside.

According to initial reports, the disc's HD DVD side is otherwise identical to the commercially-released version, with the only net loss in terms of overall content being the audio commentary, which had been exclusive to the disc's DVD side (the HD DVD side replaces that track with its own exclusive picture-in-picture video commentary).

Considering the disdain some early adopters have for the HD DVD/DVD combo format (see Josh Zyber's recent commentary, "Combo Discs - What Went Wrong?") we can only imagine these non-combo editions of '300' are soon to become a hot item on the trading circuit.

Well, I just took an assload of DVD's to Blockbuster and traded them in for over $500 worth of credit. I was pretty impressed with how much credit they gave me for each DVD. They just scan each bar code and give you exactly half of what they sell them for. I came so close to getting a PS3 for almost free and going format neutral but decided not to. I kept DVD's which I simply can not live without and don't know when they will be released in HD, or just really cool boxed sets I don't want to replace yet.

I didn't ask, pretty sure they would though as they sell previously played games. The hardest part is finding a Blockbuster that has the Trade & Save program, There are 4 Blockbusters fairly close to me but I ended up having to go to the one 45 minutes away because it was the only one that traded movies.

For Primebane or anyone else that buys imported HD DVD's. Are the menu's in german or whatever country it was meant to be seen in and do the cases look the same (not the cover art but the case dimensions etc.) ? I want to buy Resident Evil, Silent Hill and maybe a couple more.

Menus are in the foreign language, but for the 3 I've bought they're pretty easy to navigate to find English.

As far as the cases, it varies. Silent Hill is a standard HD DVD case. But the Running Scared HD DVD I bought was in a cardboard fold-out type case, and I bought a few HD DVD cases and just converted some of the case art and did a makeshift one.

You may catch a break, but it's tough to sell receivers online. They're so heavy, shipping is a fortune. You may have better luck with someone local through Craig's List.

OK, guys, I figure someone here will be able to help me out. Now that I've got an HDMI equipped 360, I want to upgrade my TV.

I'll be keeping my main 50" 1080i projection screen (it sucks, but I won't have THAT much cash to blow in the upcoming month or two).

I'm looking for something under $1000, native 1080p (1920x1080) with HDMI, and a good contrast ratio (5000:1 or up). Size isn't that big of a deal, because this will pretty much be my personal tv set, something I can throw in my room and easily take with me when I get an apartment.

I've found one or two sets that come close, but I figured I'd ask around anyway, see what you guys can come up with.

PrimeBane

Well, if you're going to go below 50", I wouldn't worry about 1080p too much.

Check out a nice 42" plasma (768p) from Panasonic, Samsung or LG. :)

if you're going with a smaller TV, you're basically wasting your money on 1080p. Depending on how the lightning is in your room, also, might determine if you want LCD or Plasma (LCD handles ambient light better, but has weaker blacks than plasma).

Check out some of the reputable web sites online...Vanns.com, DTVCity.com....if you're dead set on 1080p your money will go further there than Best Buy.

SIMPSONS MOVIE ON BLU-RAY DISC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't have a cow, man! Fox has announced it will bring 'The Simpsons Movie' to Blu-ray day-and-date with the standard-def DVD this December.

After over a decade in development, 'The Simpsons Movie' lived up to the hype and emerged as one of the summer's biggest hits, with Bart & Co. netting a worldwide gross of nearly $300 million.

Fox will debut the Blu-ray and DVD day-and-date December 18, with both sharing identical extras (al though the Blu-ray versions will all be presented in full 1080 HD video).

Among the goodies are two audio commentaries with multiple cast and crew, three featurettes, deleted scenes, a Homer monologue from the "Tonight Show," and alternate character designs from the show's creator, Matt Groening.

The BD-50 dual-layer release will come with 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video and a DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround track.

Fox has set a $39.98 MSRP for the Blu-ray.

A blurry and pretty much incoherent video has been posted which guides you through the steps of converting HD-DVD media to Blu-Ray format. The result is said to be playable on the PlayStation 3 with zero quality loss.

inre Top Gun HD:

I should mention that I noticed one strange audio anomaly on thise disc. At approximately the 55:11 mark, right at a cut from a shot of Kelly McGillis in bed staring at a note to a shot of Maverick walking with a group of fellow fighter pilots, there is a prominent dropout of the soundtrack. Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" plays in the background, and about a half-second too early before the video cuts, the audio simply cuts out. It's like the jarring audio silence you hear during a layer change on a standard-def DVD, only the video holds tight.

We've contacted Paramount to get a response on the potential defect, and will report as soon as we receive official word. In the meantime, if any readers have experienced the same problem with the disc, we've opened a dedicated thread for 'Top Gun' (linked below) where you can discuss the issue.

That looks a lot like a slip cover... although the actual cover will be the same.

There's a website somewhere that creates their own HD DVD and BD covers... you could always snag their's when the movie is released.

how do you find out what blockbusters accept old dvds? i have a bunch of dvds that id like to get on bluray.

I called my local Blockbuster and asked if they traded DVD's for HD titles. The lady told me all 4 of the locals don't accept DVD's except for one that was 45 minutes away in a town/small city. Just call the one nearest you and if they don't, ask which ones near you will. Also, you don't have to use the trade credit at the same store as the one you traded in the DVD's, you can use the credit at any Blockbuster as they give you a "credit" card. I used most of my trade credit at a different Blockbuster.

That's another thing, out of 5 Blockbusters only 1 sells HD titles, but it has a pretty good selection. Must be an experimental type thing with that store.

Man, I have GOT to get surround sound hooked up in my fiance's (our) house. Watching these HD-DVD's on a 40" Samsung LCD is great except for the stereo sound coming from the TV. I've got a 6.1 home theater system at my parents house I need to bring over.

My receiver doesn't have HDMI but supports everything all the way to DD 5.1 EX and DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete. So I'm guessing via optical cable from my 360 to my receiver all the audio I'll be getting from HD-DVD's will be Dolby Digital 5.1 and EX or basic DTS 5.1/6.1 right?

Beginning in January 2008, the HD-DVD Combo will be discontinued by Warner Home Video for the Theatrical New Release Business Unit. Warner will be offering the HD version only.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will be the last title we are offering the HD-DVD Combo for. The Invasion will be the first HD only title on the TNR release slate.

What do you guys think about HD movies released with little or no extras? Some negative chatter has been mentioned about Top Gun's HD-DVD release next week which has virtually no extras. My opinion, I couldn't care less about extras on a HD-DVD/Blu-ray movie release. Most extras in DVD's I've ever checked out have always sucked. Except maybe for a nice documentary every now and then. Pretty much all the extras in HD releases I've seen are 480i/p anyway so really what's the point? HD movies could come with no extras and it wouldn't bother me. I just want the movie in HD.

Not caring, I can understand, that's one thing....but polls like this just show make you shake your head, and reaffirm why I feel like punching everyone around me when I'm in public.

I think the biggest problem with the public and HD is that people aren't buying a large enough tv for their viewing distance.

If you sit far enough away from any size HDtv, you'll never see the benefits... IMO that's the biggest hurdle HD has to overcome in terms of media sources.

true...but what gets me is that seemingly everyone is buying HDTVs these days. I mean go into Best Buy, Circuit City, etc... that's basically all they sell. So all these new HDTVs are getting sold and nobody seems to know what high-definition even is...and I'll bet they're all wondering why their cable picture is poorer all of a sudden.

I'll take extra's if they're given to me but it won't make or break my buying decision. I do think every release should at least have the theatrical trailers/teasers and TV Spots but I'll only watch a documentary or whatever if I really, really want to know more about a movie, that's not very often. Tried a CD case last night..... which he cracked and got to it. Think I outsmarted him this time though - took a piece of acrylic and cut it to size and wedged it up against there....... hopefully it works.

Well, if you're going to use it to feed through an HDTV, then I really like the fact that it has not only 2 HDMI in inputs, but an HDMI output, as well.

It has a lot of different audio modes, but you'll probably never use most of them. And it's 7.1, which is a cool feature if you use it. It has 110 watts per channel, but you'll probably never reach that potential (even 100 watts per channel is way more than enough in my opinion).

I've never used my receivers for MP3s or anything like that, so I can't really speak to the options it offers there, although it looks like it offers quite a bit from reading through.

Pioneer is a great brand, although I've never owned or even heard one of their receivers.

My thought on this unit is that it's kind of in the middle ground of the receivers. It's a little bit of a step up from a standard, fully-capable 5.1 that can do the dolby, etc.. and those usually have at least 1 HDMI input and at least 1 or 2 Optical audio inputs. (You can get a nice Sony or Yamaha for $200 at Best Buy, probably cheaper online).

But it's a step below the receivers that can handle the True HD sound or the other top of the line uncompressed audio formats being offered on blu-ray/HD DVD discs (unless I missed it when reading the receiver's specs, which is possible.)

I'd say it's a good product if you're going to use 7.1 and want all the bells and whistles of the settings/options, but if you just want the sound quality and the basic inputs to handle a nice HD setup, you can find others out there for 150-100 bucks cheaper.

Good luck! I just bought a new receiver a few weeks ago, it's always fun to shop for new electronics.

If DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 are good enough, then go for it. :)

what are some good movies that are good on blu-ray?

Good is subjective, but I'd start with Pirates of the Caribean movies. If you're a Bond fan, Casino Royale might be right up your alley.

Pretty much any Beuna Vista (ie Disney) title you're pretty safe PQ wise.

Titles like Flags of our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima are really good if you like WWII movies.

IMO, most of the really good movies for BD are coming out this fall starting with Meet the Robinsons and the Spiderman boxed set.

do you all have alot of regular dvds? and now you have started buying blurays and hd..i have like 500 dvds, and now ive begun to aquire some blu rays, since i got a ps3. i am debating to buy a hd but havent quite gotten to that point yet. i remember when dvd came out and i began replacing my vhs with dvds. i wish the price of the blurays went down..30 a pop is alot per dvd. im up to 7 now, and just ordered the shooter from amazon.

The sooner you sell them the more you get back. I waited waaaay too long to get rid of my VHS collection (finally sold them about 4 months ago) and got a whopping 50 cents each! I sold and traded a bunch of DVD's while they have some value. I made a deal with my wife that every title I got rid of on DVD I would eventually replace in HD. (although some were blind buys and I have no intention to replace):D I have a list and am crossing them off one at a time. I did keep almost 100 DVD's, just the movies I love, and don't know when they will be out in HD.

Is it worth paying $1,000 for a 37" Samsung LCD if its only 720p?? I only intend to play Xbox 360 and watch a movie here and there on it. It will not have an HD cable box being run to it..

It's all relative........how much is a $1000 to you? Is it a lot...or is it a drop in the bucket?

If you don't have any HD sources for your movies, the part of it being 720p won't matter. It will only display your XBOX games in HD. Which comes to the second part...do you game alot? Would the tv be worth getting just for the gaming alone? You're the one who will answer these questions...not us.

Anyone watch Galapagos yet? I went ahead and ordered it. It was only $22 and had a running time of 150 minutes.....which isn't bad. As long as it has some komodo dragons killing and eating stuff....I'll be happy :D

Is there a better option than the Samsung for the same cash??? I have a 50" Sony downstairs that all my movies are hooked up to. I just don't want to hook up my games to it because I like keeping my game systems up in my office. I play mostly sports games and usually about an hour every night or couple of nights.

At 37" 720p will do you just fine. :)

Samsung and Sony both use the same panels for their LCD screens... I'd go with Samsung due to the lower price.

Seriously....if it were for nothing more then a gaming monitor, so to speak.......I'd just get a cheap 32"-37" 720p TV from Vizio or Westinghouse.

I don't know about "raving"....but they are reasonably priced. Of course....they're not the same standard as a Sony or Samsung...but they're not priced as high either.

Like I said...if it was for nothing except playing videos games on...I'd get one of those or a Westinghouse.

I actually think Westinghouse makes 1080p "monitors" for relatively cheap.

Vizio tends to get a good name due to price and a better picture than most bargain tvs... and as long as they work okay, you'll have a pretty good tv.

But if it goes, you could have a hell of a time getting it serviced by the company.

If its going to be a pain to deal with customer service than its not worth the savings. I am actually eventually looking to get two flat screens (one for the bedroom, one for my office).

Playback Problems Reported on 'Silver Surfer,' 'Day After Tomorrow' Blu-ray Discs

what was initially a cause for celebration has become an exercise in frustration for some Blu-ray fans as incompatibility issues with some players have hindered playback of the discs.

The most severe problems have been reported on Samsung's BDP-1200 and LG's BH100, which are both said to be incapable of playing back the discs at all. Less catastophic issues (error messages and playback stutter) have been reported for Samsung's BDP-1000. The discs appear to play back fine on all other Blu-ray players (including the PlayStation 3), although users have reported lengthy load times of up to two minutes.

WOOHOO!!!!!!!!

New Line Brings 'Pan's Labyrinth' to Blu-ray, HD DVD
Thu Oct 04, 2007 at 04:10 PM ET

In the studio's first dual-format day-and-date high-def release, New Line will bring the Oscar-winning 'Pan's Labyrinth' to Blu-ray and HD DVD this December.

Ever since New Line finally announced it was jumping into high-def with last month's announcement of 'Hairspray,' 'Pan's Labyrinth' has been one of the most highly-anticipated catalog titles for next-gen release in the studio's library. Now the wait is over, and both HD DVD and Blu-ray fans will be able to feast on Guillermo Del Toro's highly-acclaimed, multiple Oscar-winning fairy tale when it streets December 26.

New Line will be pulling out all the stops for 'Labyrinth,' which will come loaded with bonus features. Among the extras is a video prologue and audio commentary by Del Toro, two featurettes, an interactive "Director's Notebook," extensive storyboard and still galleries, an excerpt from the "Charlie Rose Show" with Del Toro, and a Marketing Campaign gallery with trailers and other ad materials.

Exclusive to the high-def versions will be an enhanced picture-in-picture video commentary with cast & crew interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, while the HD DVD will also enjoy web-enabled content (to be announced at a future date).

Tech specs are equally impressive, with 1080p video (codec TBA) and a DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio track in 7.1 Surround -- so far the studio's first high-def title to be confirmed with high-resolution audio.

Retail for both next-gen editions is $35.99.

i agree with ewto but only as far as owning the movie. For me, at least, much of the replay value is having a movie on while I'm cooking in the kitchen or putting something together, so I'm not 100 percent with the movie the entire time...so if it's not in English at least dubbed (a la District B-13, which rocks by the way), it doesn't really pay for me to own it.

That said, Apocolypto is probably the 1 movie where you don't need to understand what they're saying so much to enjoy the film a second or third time.

I think it's a lot better than people give it credit for. Eric Bana does a pretty good job as David Banner. The CG for Hulk is pretty good as well. It's not the greatest movie of all time but it has it's strong points. Like the scene where Hulk smashes the Hulk-Dog in his balls. :D

Does anyone who doesn't have a receiver that supports Dolby TrueHD still select it when playing HD-DVD's or Blu-ray? Now that I have my surround sound hooked up I've found that even though my receiver doesn't Dolby TrueHD it does sound better, louder and more dynamic with my rear surrounds. The first 10 minutes of Top Gun sounds amazing!!!

hmmm... I'll have to give that a try :)

Bought Planet Earth and Troy: Director's Cut last night :D

Has anyone done any importing of HD-DVD's? I'm thinking of importing Total Recall and possibly others. What are the best HD-DVD imports right now of big titles that won't see the light of day here for a long time if not ever?

Invincible - Slow and boring
The Lookout - Never head of it
Imax: Roving Mars - Would only watch once
Dinosaur - Possible
Eight Below - Not interested
Bridge to Terebithia - Heard it was terrible
Pearl Harbor - Slow, boring, and terrible
Gone in 60 Seconds - I'd rather cut out my eye than watch Nic Cage in a movie.
The Guardian - Saw it and liked it, but don't know if I'd watch it again.
Deja Vu - OK, popcorn flick, but wouldn't watch again.
The Wild - Cartoon? Don't think I saw it.
Chicken Little - Not interested.

There might be more...

Thanks though.

I'm tempted to buy the T2 French import but I'm hearing a forthcoming German version may be better

I've bought 3 imports so far...Silent Hill HD DVD and Running Scared HD DVD from Xploited (who are awesome), and French T2 HD DVD from HDADDICTS (who was good, but took a while to ship coming from Canada, at the time Xploited was out of stock).

I don't know how much better they can get T2 to look considering the source, but I did hear the German version will have more extras. Oh well, I can't afford to triple dip just yet on T2!

yeah of all those disney movies I only own Deja Vu (bought used) and The Guardian (one of the best looking blu-ray titles out there.) And my dad bought me The Lookout but I'm yet to watch it yet.

Also, if you're considering The Wild, do yourself a favor and use the same knife to gouge your eyes out that you used for Gone in 60 Seconds :)

The Guardian? Is that the movie w/ Costner and Kutcher?

Tell me you don't own that one.

agreed, people are real quick to dismiss Costner flicks. I've watched this one 3 times already.

Guardian is actually a good movie to watch once. I wouldn't watch it again, unless it was with someone who had not seen it, but I don't repeat view a lot of movies as it is.

Christ, my "optical in" on my HTIB is broken. Now I'm running sound through RCA cables, how prehistoric is that. Time to bite the bullet and get a HDMI receiver. I want to hear what TrueHD sounds like anyway.
