I'm not an expert but I'd say no, Primebane would probably know. Although some might say 7.1 is the only way to go, that's too many for me. To save money for now I'm going to use my HTIB speakers and sub until I can find some that I want.

This is the receiver I'm probably going to get, but not from this source.

No any speaker should play anything that you send to it, your receiver on the other hand, and source both need to be capable playing it and sending it to and from each other...

That's right,.. you don't need special speaker, but I think you would notice the difference more with better speakers.

Yeah, I was considering the 605. Sounds like a real good receiver. The only thing that concerns me is the video going from HD DVD (or HD source)-> Receiver -> Projector thru HDMI. It sounds like the 605 will upscale it and I don't want that. Any video going thru the 810 will just pass thru and not be affected. If I play a 720p source then what goes thru the 810 will be 720p, same with 1080i. Basically wanting a receiver that has the convenience of HDMI without messing around with the picture too much, and I've read the 605 does not do a very good job upscaling. I might get the 910 for 7.1 but I really can't see myself using that many speakers... ever. Even 6.1 wouldn't be used for a long time, if ever. I'd probably just upgrade my 5.1 speakers eventually even though I've always been very impressed with the Pioneer speakers in my HTIB. Thanks for the suggestion.

Well the 605 does decode TrueHD which I dont think the 910 does. Both have their pros and cons. Check out the reveiws on the Sony's before you make a finial choice.

I've been putting off getting Planet Earth....but at the very begining of Galapagos....is a commercial showing all the kickaz scenes from Planet Earth......and I must get it soon.

+1

If anyone enjoyed Planet Earth and likes those type of nature shows.....Galapagos is a must own. Some incredible cinematagraphy that looks even clearer then Planet Earth did. Seriously....if it weren't for the unreal clarity...I don't think you'd be able to see the "dragons" on those rocks. Those little buggers blend in so well.

Jay....I haven't seen all 100% of it yet...but what is your standout PQ scene.

Mine has to be the segment on the "sea iguanas"......where they are talking about the crabs interaction with the iguanas....and then they show this crab....who looked like a friggin south american parrot with all the colors he had on his shell...and he was climbing over a pile of the iguanas. The colors...the contrast...the scene.......I was "wowed".

It's on Amazon for $19.95. It has a running time of 2 and 1/2 hours...which is not bad. It's basically a documentary...much like Planet Earth....but this one centers specifically on...you guessed it.....the Galapagos Islands.

If you didn't care for Planet Earth...then you won't like this one either. But if you like the nature films....then this is a must own.

I just think it's pretty amazing that some of the best shots I have ever seen on my HDTV...come not from CGI....nor from Hollywood sets.....nor from production editting........but from just good old mother nature and a HD camera.

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/images/post/2/2969/original.jpeg

Plot Synopsis: The Galapagos islands are a fascinating microcosm of our planet and home to some of the most astonishing creatures found anywhere on Earth: iguanas swim the sea like dragons, short-eared owls stalk petrels by day and 500 pound giant tortoises bellow over lava fields. One thousand kilometers due west of Ecuador, where four major ocean currents unite, vast undersea volcanoes break the surface of the Pacific Ocean. Early explorers described these otherworldly islands as "Las Encantadas" - "the Enchanted Isles," but in time they became known as "Galapagos," the "Islands of the Tortoises." Using spectacular HiDefinition cinematography from land, sea and air, and blending dramatic landscapes with intimate animal behavior, drama reconstruction and stunning satellite imagery, this ambitious series presents the most complete portrait ever of these fascinating islands. Galapagos reveals how wildlife has found the most enterprising ways to survive on this restless volcanic outpost, why these islands are such a fascinating showcase for evolution, and the profound forces that influence the delicate balance of life. Against a backdrop of smoldering volcanoes, brittle lava fields, fields of giant cactus and wave-pounded shores, witness blue-footed boobies plunge-diving into treacherous waters, sea lions surfing, the beautiful courtship dance of the waved albatross, Darwin's finches as crafty tool-users and hawks hunting marine iguanas. Galapagos is unlike any other place on Earth.

It would depend on your setup... I forget how it all works exactly. :(

I believe that one requires HDMI 1.3 to pass any next gen sound even if the player does the decoding... the only exception would be if you're using discrete analogue channels.

I'd do some checking at AVS before proceeding to be sure. :)

HD-DVD is region free and movie studios license their movies differently outside the US. Fantastic Four is a Blu-ray exclusive here in the US. But in Germany it's not and available on HD-DVD. The same goes for Terminator 2 and both Underworld movies which are all Blu-ray exclusive here in the US but available on HD-DVD in other countries. Just go here - http://xploitedcinema.com/catalog/hd-dvds-c-35.html and see for yourself.... ;)

Importing will never play a big part in the sales and certainly not in the format war. It is for a few crazy people like myself that want some special titles and know were to get them. J6P won't know he or she can get titles abroad with different mastering or titles not yet available in USA. If he does he might think it's to expensive or too much hassle.

However here comes a list of some titles available for import on the Blu-ray format. Many more titles are coming to the markets out-side of USA now as the market starts to grow. All title will play in an American Blu-ray players:

Here is a list of some movies available as region free from Europe, not available in USA:

12 Monkeys
Alpha Dog
Con Air
Crimson Tide
Bruce Almighty
Face/Off
Hostel
Lucky Number Slevin
Paprika
Pans Labyrinth - Steelbook (no English subtitles...)
Scary Movie 4
Starship Troopers
The Exorcism of Emily Rose

that's kind of funny, I rather liked "over the hedge" and thought "hoodwinked" could have been much better.
But at least we agree on "The Wild"

I have read some reviews on "Surf's Up" and it intrigues me because I like the "mock-documentry" style of movies, which I haven't seen in an animated film before and I'm sure the tropical scenery looks great on bluray.

Um... maybe?

Ideal-Lume Lights provide another benefit that's a bit more technical. Video experts have found that using the right color of white light behind the TV helps preserve correct color perception in the picture. Our products use special lamps that have the same color of light TV professionals use as a reference,TV pictures look more natural when the light in the room is in this color.

Now, for all the technical details:

In the mid 1980's the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) conducted human factors research to identify optimum standards for the viewing conditions in professional monitor environments. Their work addressed issues applicable to all forms of electronic displays. These findings, as set forth in their 'Recommended Practices Document #166: Critical Viewing Conditions for Evaluation of Color Television Pictures', can be applied to the consumer's own viewing environment at home to get the highest level of performance and enjoyment from any television. SMPTE’s work focused not just on helping the viewer see the picture correctly but also on making the viewing experience comfortable over a long period of time - minimizing eye strain as an example.

All TVs require a darkened room to present their best picture. The color, point of origin, and intensity of light in a viewing environment, all affect the quality of image obtainable from any television, as well as the viewing fatigue experienced. A small fluorescent fixture, with a proper 'color temperature' bulb, placed behind a direct-view monitor, flat panel TV, or rear-projection set, fulfills much of what is needed to achieve the SMPTE recommendations pertaining to ambient light in the room. Viewing a TV in a darkened room can cause eye strain in short order. This is primarily due to the iris opening and closing dramatically as scenes change from dark to light on the screen. For a vivid demonstration of how frequently light levels change throughout a typical program, turn your back to a TV in a darkened room and notice how much the light changes in the room, both in intensity and frequency. Providing a small amount of light behind the set 'biases' the iris (reducing the range of motion in the iris muscle), resulting in more relaxed viewing. Glare and reflections are then dramatically reduced, by eliminating any light source from striking the front of the set. Colors appear richer and blacks are darker. Contrast and brightness controls can be turned down. Doing this will prevent over-saturation of phosphors, thereby reducing the risk of 'screen burn-in and preserving maximum sharpness and detail. This also preserves correct picture geometry and actually prolongs the life of picture tubes. Phospor life will also be extended for plasma panels and LCD monitors with adjustable cold-cathode fluorescent backlighting.

The imported fluorescent bulbs included in our products feature rare phosphors that perform unusually well. The 'Color Rendering Index' (CRI) of all our bulbs exceeds that of commonly available commercial fluorescents. Typical fluorescents have a prominent green spike in their spectral content. The human eye is most sensitive to green light. Those bulbs are manufactured for efficiency and perceived light output rather than color accuracy. CRI is the measurement of a light's ability to render surface colors recognizable according to a prescribed standard. Put another way, it’s the ability of a light source to illuminate all colors in a predictable balance. The CRI of most types of light bulbs is referenced to the spectral content of a standard element heated to a certain temperature on the Kelvin scale. Illuminants rated at 5000 Kelvins and higher are referenced to natural daylight at varying times of day. Our video monitor luminaires are rated at 6500 Kelvins. This color of white light is the same as that displayed on a correctly calibrated TV set. Using 6500K ambient lighting in a video viewing environment preserves accurate color perception of images on the screen. Another, even more precise, method of measuring an illuminant's color performance is called its 'Spectral Power Distribution' (SPD). The SPD measurements of our bulbs are among the best in the industry.

A light of this type, placed behind the TV, provides more than enough illumination in most rooms for serious viewing. Point the light toward the wall behind the set to produce an even glow surrounding the TV. It is commonly understood in the lighting industry that fluorescent phosphors change as they age. Our fluorescent bulbs' published, average, lifespan ratings are their maximum useable life. When ultimate color performance is the priority, these bulbs should be replaced at about their half-life. Even though the eye strain benefits of fluorescent bias lighting will continue until the bulb fails, the color accuracy of our bulbs will start to change slightly at approximately 50% of their maximum life rating. Many of our customers order an extra bulb with their Ideal-Lume as a convenience, in light of this aging characteristic.

The SMPTE ideal recommends that the wall behind the set be a neutral color to further preserve correct color perception. Colors classified as neutral by the Munsell Color Order System, range from white to black throughout the gray scale. Vivid colors should be avoided if they are used within the field of view of the TV screen. SMPTE suggests Munsell's 'Nearly-Neutrals' be used elsewhere in the viewing environment, but not within the field of view while observing the screen. The typical off-whites used in most homes will skew the viewer's color perception only slightly. These lighter wall colors invariably reflect so much light that most users of Ideal-Lume require some degree of dimming.

SMPTE's research discovered that the optimum level of backlighting for extended viewing should be 10% of the brightest white typically on the screen. A low-cost but effective method of dimming fluorescents is to use neutral-density theatrical gels, or a simple mechanical baffle, to cover the bulb. All of our models feature one or more of these methods.

In the absence of a light meter, there is a simple way to judge if the light is producing the correct amount of illumination on the wall behind the set. Joe Kane's 'Video Essentials' DVD or laserdisc contains a still-frame reference pattern (DVD Title 15, Chapter10) that can be displayed on the screen to provide a visual comparison. This title is now out of print. The new 'Digital Video Essentials (http://www.goestores.com/catalog.aspx?Merchant=cinemaquestincn&DeptID=127459)' HD-VHS and DVD versions contain this test pattern and other helpful information pertaining to viewing environment principles. The new DVD is available discounted on our online store. The HD-VHS version is a linear program without chapter stops. 'Digital Video Essentials (http://www.goestores.com/catalog.aspx?Merchant=cinemaquestincn&DeptID=127459)' on DVD has the test pattern in Title 12, Chapter 16, labeled "Ambient Light Reference." Mr. Kane chaired the SMPTE Professional/ Studio Monitor Working Group mentioned previously and produced these programs to help consumers and technicians alike optimize their video displays and multi-channel audio systems.

Using an Ideal-Lume behind large rear-projection TVs, larger flat panels, or behind media cabinets makes it difficult to reach the on/off switch on this product. Another helpful accessory available on our online store is a small, radio frequency controlled, remote, on/off switch (http://www.goestores.com/catalog.aspx?Merchant=cinemaquestincn&DeptID=127472). This simple switch allows the user to turn any of our Ideal-Lumes on or off from a chair or even another room. Since it is RF rather than IR, it will work even through walls without the need for a line of sight infrared beam. The device is composed of a key chain-style remote control which operates a plug-in transceiver module that would be plugged into a wall outlet behind the TV or cabinet. The Ideal-Lume is then switched on and plugged into the transceiver module. Our store also offers other switching options that feature infrared remote operability, ect.

Waterworld was pretty good, can't wait to see it in HD. :p

New, cheaper 40gb PS3 coming out at the end of the year, $399 but it's not backwards compatible. Damn, Sony can be dumb. If it was backwards compatible I'd pick one up, that's a pretty important important feature to me.

Buy a slim PS2 for the price difference in between the 40GB PS3 and the next model. Or buy one of the PS3s that plays PS2 games that is out now. Or buy a used PS2 at a video game store.

Really I don't see the appeal in playing old PS2 games anymore. Now that I've played games in high def it just isn't appealing to play PS2 games.

oaktown...were you able to find Robocop anywhere? I checked 4 or 5 places but came up empty. Found Surf's Up at Wal-Mart for $25 and picked up 28 Weeks Later, too.

kinda funny you mention it....but ever since I get the "rewards" on my Sony card....and the fact that if I order anything off of Sony Style.com I get 8 times the amount of rewards....I've started buying my Blu-Rays directly from them. Besides...they're cheaper then BestBuy and just slightly (usually like $1 or $2) more then amazon.

I figure at this pace.......I'll have enough points to redeem a 52" Sony LCD by 2012 :p

What's up fellas, I joined the club last night and bought a blu-ray player (PS3). I also picked up 300, The Departed, and Apocolyto. I've got a 50" Pioneer TV that I've been watching on an upconvert dvd player. I'm excited to see the difference as I've never seen and HD movie.

Congrats and welcome! Enjoy the eye candy.

Yeah... I kinda figured the PQ wouldn't be fantastic for either disk. But in my experience, a rating of 3 usually means the movie has some good moments in HD... just don't expect Pirates or Matrix type HD PQ the entire movie.

If you want the most money, ebay. In you want the most in-store, I'd guess FYE, the were always the best when it came to trading in my video games, never tried DVD with them, though.

Gamestop gives you 50 cents to about 5 bucks.

The Video: Sizing Up the Picture

'Spider-Man 3' may just be the most eagerly-awaited Blu-ray title from Sony since the launch of the format war. Simply put, this one can't just be good, it's got to be outstanding -- the kind of demo disc that will get the fence-sitters to finally plunk down the cash and buy a Blu-ray player. Thankfully for Sony, they've largely delivered. The picture quality of 'Spider-Man 3' may not be perfect, but it is without a doubt among the top tier of titles released on the format so far.

The film is presented in 2.40:1 widescreen, and encoded in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video. Although it was shot on film, the CGI effects are so prevalent that, like the 'Star Wars' prequels, it often feels like you're watching an animated movie -- not live-action. That gives 'Spider-Man 3' an unreal quality, which is heightened by the processed nature of the transfer.

As you would expect from a new release, the source is impeccable, with rich blacks and very bright contrast. Unfortunately, this leads me to my main gripe with the image -- the darker scenes actually look the best and most dimensional. Anything brightly lit or in daylight suffers from hot whites, which flatten out depth somewhat. Fleshtones also suffer, with even close-ups of the actors faces not looking natural in texture.

Still, when 'Spider-Man 3' delivers, it delivers in spades. The image is razor sharp, and colors are bold with no bleeding or noise. Again, darker scenes are fantastic. Even the most panoramic wide shots are rich in detail, seemingly down to the pixel. Three-dimensionality is exquisite, with the image often boasting that perfect picture window effect. Sony has also clearly taken their time with the encoding, and there are no noticeable artifacts, such as banding or macroblocking.

In short, although I can't give Spidey my full vote of confidence with a perfect five-star video rating, I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with the picture quality of this disc.

The Audio: Rating the Sound

Even better than the video is the audio. Two tracks are included -- a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround mix (at 48kHz/24-bit) and an uncompressed PCM 5.1 surround mix (at 48kHz/16-bit/4.6mbps). Although both tracks are quite stellar, if pressed, I would give the TrueHD a slight edge in terms of impact, dynamics and accuracy of sound placement.

What's great about 'Spider-Man 3,' however, is that regardless of audio format, any one of its many action sequences is instant demo material. The early fight between Spidey and Harry, the transformation of the Sandman, the over-the-top final battle -- take your pick, and you'll be treated to a stunning home theater audio experience. The "wall of sound" effect in the rears can be mammoth. The swirling waves of the Sandman are like a sonic character all on their own, while the shrieks of Venom seriously gave me one of the biggest jolts I've ever had on my couch. Deployment of discrete effects is highly aggressive, with frequent and seamless pans between all channels that create a terrific, wholly believable 360-degree effect. This is exactly the kind of surround experience that high-def is all about.

The soundtrack elements are also impeccably produced and recorded. Clarity, tonal range and realism are state-of-the-art. Low bass is a mover, shaking up the subwoofer almost constantly during the action sequences. Thankfully, volume balance is also terrific. From the all-too-clear reproduction of Kirsten Dunst's singing (please, god, no!) to the loud-as-hell extended climax, dialogue is always intelligible and well-placed in the mix. There are no apparent defects to the source at all, with the entire sonic spectrum crystal clear and free from noise, harshness or other imperfections.

Simply put, this one is reference quality, from beginning to end.

Well...if you want one of those movies for $10...you could get it now.

If there is another movie you were anticpating on buying...you could wait until 10/14.....buy that movie from Frys....then get one of the ones listed for free....or get basically $10 off any other BluRay

Me personally, there's nothing (at full retail) that I'm looking to buy....so i just jumped on the $9.99 (PE for $49.99) sale right now.

Is the buy 1 get 1 only at their retail stores? We don't have Fry's around Ohio. If it is online, then I might wait until next week and get the Prestige and some others.

I wouldn't mind going and getting Apocolypto and Gone in 60 Seconds (yes...I actually like this film...despite Cage's terrible acting) at Best Buy on Sunday.....but I seriously doubt I'll even remember admist the NFL and Fantasy Football.

Donnie Brasco [Blu-Ray] 1 $9.99 $9.99
Memoirs of a Geisha [Blu-Ray] 1 $9.99 $9.99
The Fifth Element (Re-Mastered)[Blu-Ray] 1 $9.99 $9.99
Bram Stoker's Dracula [Blu-Ray] 1 $9.99 $9.99

subtotal $89.95

As HD-DVD player prices drop, the add-on becomes less attractive in my mind. I'd rather have a seperate component that isn't tied to a 360 that could die at anytime. Plus, I don't have to deal with the 360 at all then either.

Exactly why I haven't bought an add on for my 360. I'll continue to wait. Then eventually I'll just get a stand alone player.

I'd guess by this time next year the stand-alone players will be the same price as the HD DVD add-on since they have that new deal with the company putting out cheap HD DVD players...but then again they'll probably drop the add-on to $129 or something like that. Still, you can't go wrong.

You should.

You just need a reality check. Remember back to your extensive DVD collection (assuming you have/had one). How many of those movies do you really think you will watch over and over again. I'm guilty of it as well. I just bought all of those Blu Rays...and the only one that I know for a fact I will watch over and over is PE. I just couldn't pass up the $9.99. But....I probably should have...as I'll watch those movies once......and I could have just rented them from Blockbuster for $5 instead of paying $10.

Finally found a copy of Twilight Zone: The Movie on HD-DVD while working at Best Buy last night. I was too tired to watch this last night but I did pop it in this morning and watched some of it. Very impressed! This is one of my favorite movies of all time and in HD it looks VERY nice. Their original print must be in very nice shape because it cleaned up amazingly well for HD. The TrueHD soundtrack started off a little weird with Burgess Meredith's intro. The sonic positioning was all over the place, maybe it was intentional. Like at the end when he says "The Twilight Zone" they had it coming out of the rear's which struck me as a little odd. I only delved into the first story so far and it looks and sounds really good. The score really sounds good here. Very impressed so far. I plan on giving it a full screening tomorrow night.

Twilight Zone and Transformers... among a bunch of other titles I'll buy this month these 2 are what it's all about baby.

Anyway, thought I read somewhere (maybe this thread) that there is a firmware update for the A2 that allows it to pump out a 1080p signal, anyone know anything about this? I'm wanting to buy a second player soon and use the older one for the TV, after I get a receiver... these composite cables are killing me.

freezerfuel
10-13-2007, 09:03 AM
Crap, nevermind.

This firmware update adds support for 1080p/24Hz output to the HD-A20 and HD-XA2 players. For the HD-A2, HD-A2W, HD-D2, HD-A20 and HD-XA2 players, it adds more on-screen language display options. In addition, this firmware update improves network connectivity for supporting the download of web- enabled network content associated with certain HD DVD discs, and also addresses certain disc playback and HDMI/DVI related issues identified by Toshiba

A warning to those with the 360 addon and Knocked up... let the cookie download finish before you watch the movie and definately do not cancel it.

I made the mistake of cancelling the DL... well did that ever F up my 360.

First, the rear USB stopped working. Thus the addon wasn't recognized nor was my wireless. Then, I couldn't connect any wireless controllers.

I finally got the addon to work by plugging the usb into the front. Even then Knocked Up wouldn't work and the 360 wouldn't recognize the controllers. I thought for sure I'd be calling for a coffin again.

But thank god for AVS... I found out I needed to delete the file/cookie from the addon and let it DL again. That did the trick :)

Now all is well again.

Hey all. I'm new to the whole HD craze. This thread has been delightfully informative for a "newb" like me and the links that's been provided has proved most invaluable in helping me to thoroughly research so that I feel confident enough to make an informed decision on purchasing an HDTV. I've since narrowed down my two choices and I was hoping what everyone's opinion were on these two plasma TVs:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8509081&type=product&id=1186005526959

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8330987&type=product&id=1175389260793

They both have the size and specs I was looking for; they both have similar price tags too. I've read very good things about the panasonic--good enough that I read on one of the customer reviews that it was voted overall best flat-panel TV by a credible magazine. However, as for the samsung, I haven't really come across it much just from simply googling it on the internet compared to the abundance of reviews that came up from googling the panasonic. I've seen the PQ on the panasonic in-store but I don't believe i've come across the samsung yet. It is for these reasons i'm leaning towards the panasonic. Yet it's hard to ignore the 15000:1 contrast ratio on the samsung as opposed to the 5000:1 on the panasonic as well as the 3 HDMI inputs vs the 2 with pnasonic. Has anyone seen both of these in-person? Or does anyone here know much about this samsung model in general?

Also, I had another basic question regarding DVD upconversion. I believe i've read some posts about this from the previous pages back, but I still need some clarification. I'm still thinking of buying another HDTV for a bedroom but do not want to shell out more mula for another 1080P. Thus i'm looking for somewhere around the size range of 26-32." So my question is, will a DVD upconversion be enough to take advantage of the PQ from a 720P HDTV or will I be able to see the difference with an HDDVD/BD player that pumps out 1080P? In other words, does it make sense to buy another HD disc player for an HDTV with a native resolution of 720P or will a DVD upconversion suffice??

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and/or opinions as well as taking the time to read this

In short...

The DVD Upconversion will be noticeable, but that's more dependant on the quality of your upconversion DVD player than your TV (in my opinion). The PS3 is a hell of an upconverter.

As for the difference between and upconverted DVD and an HD DVD/blu-ray, there is a major difference. Doesn't matter if your TV is 720p native (both of mine are)...at anything 50" or less, you wouldn't notice a difference to 1080p anyway (I can't at larger sizes either, but that's just me).

As for the TV, I personally have and LOVE the Panasonic plasma I got a couple months ago, so I highly recommend the Panasonic brand. However, Samsung is a decent brand in the high-def field, as well, and while a 15,000:1 contrast ratio is obviously better than 5,000:1, don't let that be the deciding factor. The only thing I can suggest is to try to find locations that have them in store and do an on-site comparison.

Everyone's eyes are different, and everyone's rooms are different, so no 1 opinion is better than your own under your own conditions. That said, you probably can't go wrong with either set there...so it might come down to price and your gut feeling.

Hope that helps.

I would go with Panasonic. Great TV.

I think that small of a TV an upconversion DVD player will work fine. But for $199.00 Toshiba players its tough not to buy one because a decent upconversion DVD player will run you $100.00.

U WILL NOT benefit from 1080P on that samll of a screen at all..

thanks for the feedback Jay and grif. So both of you are suggesting that HDDVD/BD player with a 49" or smaller 720P HDTV will look just as clear as on a 1080P HDTV in the same size range?

in short:

HD DVD/BD player -> smaller 720P HDTVs = HDDVD/BD -> smaller 1080P HDTVs

My personal belief and recommendation is that your money is better spend on a larger TV/better brand than 1080p over 720p with all other things considered, even above 50", but definitely at 50" or below.

Some people will advocate for 1080p no matter what with a blu-ray player because it's a 1080p source, but again, I couldn't tell the difference with my own eyes...and at some point, there's only so much detail the human eye can understand anyway.

Enjoy!

Did a mess of HD viewing this weekend :)

Friday night was Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer on BD... the film wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I'd classify it as a fun flick that I'll watch again. Kids really liked it. PQ was good for the most part, but it didn't really pop like I thought it would.

Next on Friday was Knocked up on HD DVD... it wasn't the funniest film I'd ever seen and it turned out to be a lot more crude than I originally thought. Not sure if I'll watch this one again or not and it most certainly won't be viewed with the kids up.

Saturday Night was 1 episode of Heroes on HD DVD (still fantastic) and Apocalypto on BD. I have to say Apocalypto is one amazing movie... definately one to own IMO. The PQ is fantastic and the story even better. Beware there are subtitles if that's not your thing.

Tonight was Borat (upconverted DVD... funny/strange movie that I really don't have the yen to see again) and 28 Weeks Later on BD. 28 Weeks wasn't bad, but IMO it's not as good as 28 Days Later. PQ was average at best, but that's probably more due to the mood they wanted to give the film rather than the transfer. Its another film that I'm not sure if I'll watch it again, although I'd like to with the volumn cranked... the youngest complained she could hear all the "scary" parts so I had to turn it down.

And on another positive note, my copy of Transformers on HD DVD will ship tomorrow. :) That means I'll probably have it by Wednesday or Thursday. :(

What a novel concept Prime....actually watching the movies you buy!

Just kidding, I watched U-571 on HD DVD with my wife last night. Very good movie with what I consider top tier PQ...this one did pop, to my surprise since there are so many dark scenes. Audio was fantastic, too, you feel like you're being depth charged.

Just got back from Circuit City myself....it was weird, they had the Blu-Rays buy 1, get 1 free but the HD DVDs just 50% off...hmm.

Anyway, picked up 8 more!!!

Blood Diamond HD DVD
The Jerk HD DVD
Bullitt HD DVD
Breach HD DVD
House of Wax HD DVD
Feast HD DVD

The Descent blu-ray
Vertical Limit blu-ray

I tried and tried, but for the life of me could not get Best Buy to match the deal. I wonder if this will still be going on tomorrow with Transformers coming out for HD DVD??

I need a favor from someone.

Does anyone here own the 300 DVD......not Blu Ray or HD DVD...but the plain old DVD?

If you do....can you list the movies they preview at the begining of the disc. I remember seeing this preview for this movie about warriors who are protecting this secret for centuries.......and if I'm not mistaken....it appeared that there were two previews for the same type of movie....one for the good guys side...and then another for the bad guy side. I also believe the film was made in Russia. Anybody have a clue what I'm talking about????

The "Watch" series of films. Day Night and Night Watch are 2 of the 3 in the trilogy that have been released in the US either in theaters or on disc.

can anyone tell me how I can find out if an HDTV can play 1080p at 24 frames per second?

Also, regarding BOGO at circuit city. can anyone confirm that this is the same for the CC's here in the Bay Area? I just called and I was told by someone in the movie dept that th BOGO was only for BD

I knew I wasn't crazy. I was trying to explain them to a buddy of mine...and I could have sworn they were two separate movies...concerning the same overall theme.

Do you happen to know...are they any good?

Side note.....I didn't get my Fry's order like everyone else :(

I believe that any new model 1080p set with HDMI 1.3 will do it.

I also went to CC today and picked up 8 titles for $120. The one I went to said that the deal should be going on tomorrow as well. So I will try to pick up Transformers for 50% off

Start by checking the specs at the company's website... if it's not there, email them. You could also check out AVSForum for the info.

Never saw any of them - I've heard they are above average; at the very least, very, very stylistically well done.

How come when I went to CC on Sunday and 2 movies weren't in the deal: 8 Below and Chicken Little.

Are you guys sure that's for ALL Blu and HD?

if you really want these two movies just go to Best Buy or Target, they should be part of the Buena Vista Buy 1, Get 1 Free sale, as well.

As far as the Circuit City deal is concerned...someone at AVS posted this, so I'll just pass it along.

ALL the Circuit City's are having this deal, the employees just need to know to enter 02 for the promotion near the very end of the checkout process.

That's not true. When I bought my 8 movies last night she didn't have to do anything. There's a little white "S" to the left of each item as it rings up. When another movie $29.99 or less is rung up both white "S's" beside each item turns green showing a promo/discount is being applied automatically.

I think I got a great deal. First Troy SE was 29.99 at my CC and it rung up 12.50. Than I got into my truck to look over my deals and found that the cashier didnt ring up superman returns. So I got 7 movies for the price of 6 and Troy for 12.50. Good day indeed!! :D

Anyway, I got it at Best Buy and used a reward zone certificate.

Did take advantage one more time on the 50% off deal at CC....

28 Days Later blu-ray

If you throw a hissy, you should get a $24 gift card for your trouble. It's IN their Sunday circular as being in stock on Tuesday.
