'Jack Ryan' Special Edition HD DVD Not So Special?
Tue Oct 16, 2007 at 11:00 AM ET

http://www.highdefdigest.com/images/post/4/4010/original.jpeg

In what may end up being the biggest packaging blunder yet for a high-def title, Paramount's 'Jack Ryan Collection' HD DVD appears to have shipped to retail in a deluxe "Special Collectors Edition" box set that contains none of its advertised bonus features.

First announced earlier this summer, the four-disc 'Jack Ryan Collection' was originally planned for dual-format release on September 25. Although the studio would eventually scrap the Blu-ray version and push back the street date by nearly a month to October 23, the box set remained among the more highly-anticipated titles of the season.

Now, with the set's official street date only a week away, the HD DVD edition of 'The Jack Ryan Collection' has begun shipping to retail, but fans who were initially delighted to snap up early copies of the set began noticing something strange as they dived into the four-disc set.

As first reported yesterday by fans on several forums (including our own), despite the "Special Collector's Edition" label clearly stamped across the front cover of each disc in the set, and a list of bonus features promoted on the box art (including audio commentaries, featurettes, and more), as yet no one has been able to find the advertised supplementary material on any of the actual discs.

We here at High-Def Digest received our own copy of the final product direct from Paramount on Monday, and after combing through each disc, we too were unable to find a single supplemental feature anywhere on the entire set.

At press time, Paramount had not yet responded to a request for a comment on the apparent packaging snafu, but we'll keep you posted as soon as any official information comes in on the matter. Stay tuned...

Also the got The Reaming, oops, I mean The Reaping.

I hear you Primebane, Canada needs some deals like the US gets, hell if Best Buy had a 2 for 1, or 50% off titles I'd need a cart for all the HD DVD's I'd get.

I think you guys should ban SBrooks1 for posting that on a BR site, not only did he buy it, he bought two of them and bragged about it here, why two, all that is going to do is help the Nielson numbers next week, at least he could of done was buy a couple of BR discs to offset the HD DVDs.

Buy 2 HD movies you can mix and match. Or grab 2 Transformers and sell the other one.

I ended up buying 21 HD DVD and Blu Ray disc all together. One amazing deal.

The manager was next to us while I was getting cashed out and said that cant be right and said he has to check into something so I am sure this deal is going to be caught very very soon.

10-16-2007, 12:12 PM
Picked up:

Transformers HD
Smokin' Aces HD
Day After Tomorrow BD
Fantastic Four 2 BD
Stargate BD
Talladega Nights BD

total price: Just over $94

I informed my buddy about the sale but when he strolled into his local Circuit City in Tennessee, nothing rang up on sale and all of the HD copies of Transformers had been pulled from the shelves. He ended up picking one from under a check-out counter. He took it to a girl in customer service and coaxed her into giving it to him for the "nationwide sale price" of $14.99. At least he didn't leave empty handed. Now the question is whether or not CC is onto what is happening or if this was just an isolated store.

I had no problems but I think it was because the woman who helped me knew what she was doing. I even asked her(like a ******) if it would be OK to add these HD DVDs, and she said "yeah it's just supposed to be for select blu-rays, but they're all coming up so...). The first girl at the checkout counter was not aware of the code needed to activate the deal. The woman who helped me was white, black curly hair, little overweight, very nice.

I'd recommend getting over there before it gets even more picked over...they still had plenty of good stuff today, though. Might go down to Wellington tomorrow!!!! I'll hit 3 CC in 3 days.

It was an unadvertised sale that apparently started Saturday (although there is a sign up at the blu-ray section now).

Circuit City has a select group of blu-ray titles at buy 1, get 1 free...but apparently at stores where they knew how to ring up the promotion, ALL blu-ray discs ran up with the deal, not just a select group. People tried HD DVDs and they worked, as well. So for a time, ALL high definition content that was priced $29.99 or lower worked as part of this "promotion" and was 50% off.

Some are now saying corporate corrected the loophole, but it worked for me last night and again this morning.

Thanks to the CC sale I now have 11 HD's instead of 3. Picked up:

Shooter
MI: 3
Dawn of The Dead
Perfect Storm - I read sound is good, but pq is about the same as DVD. Might also return
Casino - might return
Goodfellas - might return
Transformers x 2 - didn't know what else to get.

I'm still looking for Troy: DC, I heard stores restock on Wednesdays. Maybe I'll exchange my Transformers for Troy if they get it in.

My logic is to buy what's on sale now instead of regretting it later. You can always return the movies if you don't want it later on(of course it needs to be sealed).

I wish you the best of luck, but I got this message from the 1 store I tried and the corporate office. Best Buy won't honor any deal without a written advertisement to verify. I had my receipt and a call into the customer service people at Circuit City and that wasn't good enough. It pissed me off at the time, but the next day I got the same movies at a different Circuit City for $7.50 cheaper anyway, since Best Buy's Fox titles are $34.99 and Circuit City has them for $29.99.

A few people said briging in the receipt worked for them, so it might depend on the store.

I haven't competely stopped (last movie I went to was RE: Extinction) but it's becoming very rare that I actually go now. I'm guaranteed the best seat in my theatre, I can pop popcorn, pause to take a leak or order a pizza or do whatever. The best part is I don't have to worry about seatkickers behind me, **** that's like my pet peeve at the theatre. I seriously think the theatres around me don't hold a candle to the picture I have, now I need to get the audio to where my pq is at. After this latest splurge....I too am gonna start to limit what it is I actually buy....versus what I can go to Blockbuster and just rent for $4.

After getting my Fry's order and opening all the discs....I was looking over them and thinking to myself........self, how many times are you going to watch Layer Cake.....or Flying Daggers......or Donnie Brasco? The answer.....not many.

From here on out....I'm sticking to the Blockbusters (POTC, Spiderman, etc).....and the Classics (Terminators, Robocop, etc).

From my perspective, if I buy a movie for $10 bucks and it doesn't totally suck, I may watch it twice. That is a good as renting it twice, so I think it evens out. If I don't think I'll watch it more than once, I won't buy it.

Nope... I learned my lesson with DVDs not to buy every ok new release that comes out.

I'll buy the classics and some of the new day and date's, but I plan on selling off most of the new day and date disks if I don't see the movie as being one I'll watch over and over again.

Exactly. I usually watch some action scenes over and over again because of the sound design. Or if it has a cool sequence, those have good replay value

Even though some movies are good like Casino and Goodfellas, I don't think I'd watch it over and over again. Same for comedies. I don't need HD's for those either. I wouldn't really care if it's clear or not because it's just comedy.

hey everyone, best buy just advised me that they will not do an in-wall install of the wiring (per geek squad home theatre install of mounting a flat panel tv) unless it is "safety" rated. And according to them, the minimum standard for this type of rating are their monster cables. I wanted to buy the cheapest cables possible but they're telling me that their installers will not do it unless they are monster.

What does everyone think or know regarding this? I couldn't help but be skeptical

What a joke, whether it's true or not....nice easy way to get you to buy Monster cables....I'd buy your products and get your install somewhere else.

I've never even heard of safety rating on speaker wire (if that's what you're talking about)...they have thickness ratings, which are universal between brands.

There are safety ratings for in wall cables. But it's about the AWG, not the *brand*. Rolleyes to them. Here in GA, one needs 12 AWG for speaker wire to pass builder code. I use 10 AWG whenever I can (lower is better), but 12 is good enough. My surround speakers use 12AWG in wall, and then I use 10 from the speaker itself to the wall jack. Oh well. ANY brand will do. I recommend Blue Jeans Cable (http://www.bluejeanscable.com) for high quality wire at a low price. They are AVS sponsors, too.

So if Best Buy makes you use Monster cables, find someone else. Find a recommendation from a friend or family members for a local electrician. He'll hook you up, and be way cheaper than Best Buy.

well I have a cousin that works at best buy which is why I opted not to buy any of the a/v cables during the purchase (oh btw, I bought that Panasonic 58" that I asked for everyone's opinion about compared to the Samsung on one of my revious posts). So I bought the cheapest ones they had because I personally don't buy into the whole "the better cables, the better picture philosophy," at least not to a certain extent. I bought the dynex ones from best buy - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8426401&productCategoryId=abcat0107020&type=product&tab=1&id=1181832626461#productdetail\ (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8426401&productCategoryId=abcat0107020&type=product&tab=1&id=1181832626461#productdetail%5C)

These are the ones they said weren't safety rated for in-wall installation.

I also can't help but think that the guy I purchased everything from just wants to try and get me to buy monster knowing that I have a plug at BB. But it doesn't make sense cause these guys aren't even on commission. In any case thanks for everyone's feedback!

It's the same as being someone who likes to watch the "Special Features" on a disc.....or being someone who could care less about the special features.

I've always been in the second category. I've never wanted to watch a film while listening to what the driector was trying to achieve in a particular scene. If he achieved it....I saw it. That simple.

The only exception is outtakes and bloopers. I love those :)

Spiderman Trilogy review

http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/review.php?id=31070

Wow, thanks a lot Sony... jerks!

I assume you're referring to this?

The Image:

All three films in the box set are presented in 1080p transfers, encoded with AVC/MPEG-4.

Spider-Man: Having not seen the first film in a few years, I was shocked to discover that it's framed at 1.85:1. I had to double check that this wasn't some kind of mistake, but no, that's how it was shot and exhibited, and that's what we get here. And the fact that it's in OAR is about the best thing I can say about it. This is the worst high-profile transfer I've seen since the early days of Blu-ray. The brightness in dark scenes have been jacked up, turning the blacks into murky blues. I often saw stray flashes of colors where they weren't supposed to be, perhaps breaking up the solid color of a wall or girder. Detail is extremely low, to the point where I felt like I was watching a DVD, and maybe not even an upconverted one. 2 Stars.

(SM2 got 4 stars and SM3 got 4.5 stars)

The Audio:

All three films offer Dolby True HD 24 bit/48 kHz 5.1 lossless mixes. Spider-Man 3 also has a 16 bit/48 kHz PCM lossless 5.1 track.

Spider-Man: While miles ahead of the video quality, I still had problems with the audio on this title. While the mix is certainly lively, with active surrounds and deep bass, I found that at times dialogue had a noticeable hiss. It was most discernible in the scene where Norman takes his own serum. The mix also didn't have nearly as much sound isolation as the other two films. 3.5 Stars.

(SM2 got 4.5 stars and SM3 got 5 stars)

Ordered my 2nd HD DVD player (early birthday present from my wife :D ), got an A20. I get it Tuesday. The older one will be used upstairs for casual use and the newer one will be used in the dedicated home theatre. So with the 5 free movies mail away and 3 in the box that gives me 8 free movies. Canada is finally getting some kick ass deals now.

The 5 I'm getting...

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory
The Thing
The Frighteners
Darkman

uhmmmmmmmm.....Robocop sucks azz on Blu Ray

I've seen DVDs....that aren't even upscaled...that look better. What a disappointment. I really wish I could return it and get my money back. I might even try to ebay it. Absolute crap. And any of the "tv news sequences" are absolute crap.....I mean bad......really, really bad.

Hmmm....mine is still unopened. I think it might be going back for the money I spent on it.

So you'd recommend a return if I still have the option Oak?

The Video: Sizing Up the Picture

The original unreleased Blu-ray version of 'RoboCop' has taken on a somewhat fabled quality, if only due to the fact that few have seen it. Having reviewed it personally, however, I can assure you that it was dreadful -- a mess of a transfer that was clearly minted from the same dated master used for the old MGM DVD.

By comparison, this new version is a clear improvement, but I'm sorry to report that this newly minted master still isn't the massive upgrade fans have been hoping for.

Fox/MGM presents 'RoboCop' in 1080p/MPEG-2 video (at 1.85:1 widescreen). Though there are still some instances of speckles and dirt, the print is much cleaner than the previous version. Likewise, grain is still present (particularly in low-light scenes), but again it's improved. The wacky tint problems that marred the Sony disc are mostly corrected, while fleshtones are now largely accurate (alas, there is still a slight red cast at times), and hues are generally more vibrant.

That's not to say this new Blu-ray edition of 'RoboCop' looks like a million bucks. Far from it. Detail, while again superior to what's come before, still wobbles. Sharpness wavers throughout, making some shots look flat and lacking in depth (particularly any effects shots involving mattes, and just about all of the darker/nighttime scenes). There is also still some obvious noise in the shadows, and fine textures can turn into mush. Although compression artifacts are generally not a problem, edge enhancement is obvious, with ringing visible on the most highly-contrasted areas of the picture.

Overall, while this fresh master is clearly superior to the old canceled disc, unfortunately this is just not a remaster on par with something like Sony's 'Fifth Element (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/fifthelement_remastered.html).' Simply put, I'd hoped for alot better.

The Audio: Rating the Sound

MGM presents 'RoboCop' in DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround, utilizing a 48kHz/16-bit source. Although my current hardware setup only allows me to extract the 1.5mbps DTS core of the DTS-HD MA mix, my initial impressions of this track are nearly identical to those I expressed after listening to the PCM 5.1 mix on the earlier Blu-ray version. (Note that I plan to revisit this review once I'm able extract DTS-HD MA in all its glory.)

For a film celebrating its 20th anniversary, 'RoboCop' sounds quite impressive, boosted by aggressive sound design that belies its age. The sense of envelopment is strong, with the surrounds frequently coming alive with gunfire, explosions and minor score bleed. For a mix that has been spruced up digitally for the home environment, directionality is sharp, with discrete effects not overtly localized and imaging between channels relatively seamless. I also really appreciated the fact that even during non-action scenes there was some effort made to place atmospheric sounds to the rears, giving 'RoboCop' a consistently active presence.

Having said all that, this mix shares the same limitations of the PCM track on the earlier Blu-ray disc. Fidelity and realism are lacking, and dynamic range just can't compare to today's modern mixes. High end in particular feels a bit constrained, and low bass is lacking in true heft and impact. There is also some really bad ADR in the movie, and the artificially processed quality of the original source stems only underscores the problem. Still, overall I found this to be an above-average remaster for a film of its period.

Yup, Crank on Friday. Chicago and Gone in 60 Seconds today. I'm figuring out something about Blu-ray movies that I'm in love with.....uncompressed PCM audio. It easily sounds louder and clearer than anything I've heard on any of my 30+ HD-DVD's. Crank sounds amazing and Chicago sounds almost even better. If all uncompressed PCM soundtracks are as loud and clear as these do then my non-exclusive HD-DVD buying will easily come to an end.

Xbox 360 With Built-in HD-DVD Coming?

October 21, 2007

According to Australian site Smarthouse.com.au, citing an insider at Toshiba, Microsoft is working on a new Xbox 360 console with built-in HD-DVD drive. According to the source, the new console will also include a larger hard drive and a revamped software and decoder package, including an HDTV tuner. This is supposedly Microsoft’s answer to Sony’s PS3 multi-media/HTPC capabilities, which should be available early next year.

It’s not entirely unlikely that Microsoft will release a console with built-in HD-DVD drive, but they’ll need to keep the cost down as much as possible. Otherwise we’re looking at a $500-$600 Xbox 360/HTPC/HD-DVD combo player.

"Spider-man 3 on Blu-ray is one of the Holiday season’s most highly anticipated releases on the 1080p high definition Blu-ray format but early adopters may have problems playing the disc in many of today’s Blu-ray players.

Using a review copy of "Spider-man 3" on Blu-ray on local tests at AVRev.com, the disc struggled to play in the brand new Samsung BD-P1400. After an excruciatingly long load-up time, the disc starts to freeze and skip from the very start. Audio dropping out, picture stuttering, you name it. Compared to the mainstream consumer’s expectation for DVD playback, most couldn’t make it to the actual film.

According to various reports, other players including units from Sony, Pioneer and other stand-alone Blu-ray players are reportedly having issues with the blockbuster and feature laden HD release.

Playstation 3 does come to the rescue. The game machine plays the disc like a champ. Although one of the first Blu-ray players on the market, the Sony Playstation 3 is without question the most reliable Blu-ray player on the market. While a game machine isn’t suited for many home theater applications, the lack of format incompatibilities paired with a low entry price makes the Playstation 3 the way many enthusiasts test the waters in a ferocious HD disc format war.

This has been rumored forever. MS keeps denying it though. I think it is a natural evolution for the console at some point though. I'm not sure if that would be good or bad for the 360 though.

While the PS3 keeps coming out with different modles, the core functions remain the same. Each version of the 360 seems to either add or remove a feature from the system.

TRANSFORMERS has sold over 190,000 HD DVDs in its first week making it the fastest and best-selling week one release on either high definition format as well as the best selling HD DVD ever. The TRANSFORMERS DVD is also the top-selling October DVD release in the history of the home entertainment industry.

190,000 doesn't seem like that much in a week for something as great as Transformers was. I guess that just gives me a better perspective of how many people actually care about HD programming. Imagine how many copies they would have sold if they released it on Blu-Ray as well? Hope that $500 million they got was worth it.

By the way over 4 million DVDs on Tuesday alone is an astounding number. Using crude math, that is $60 million bucks in a day. I'm assuming they make at least half off the DVD, so a $35 million take for the studio in one day is pretty huge I imagine.

Well...the Nielsons aren't going to tell you the percentage of discs sold as a BOGO at CC.

I wouldn't say the success is because of that deal....but....coincidentally, it didn't hurt either.

Plus...you'll never know the number of discs "enfluenced" by a sale like that. Of course everyone didn't go out and buy 2 or 3 or 4 discs of Transformers...looking to re sell them. but how many people thought.....well...if I go and get Transformers TODAY (rather then waiting)...I can get another movie for free and then went down and bought it in it's first week.

Just look at how many people in this very thread went crazy with that sale. Now multiply that with how many people browse the AVS forum and other multiple forums. Finally got an HD-A1, it's a long story on how I retrieved it but more on that in the next couple of days. I'll write it on my blog, it's definitely worth a read.

Here are my brief summary of the titles I tried. HDMI to the tv and analog multichannel for sound:

300 - great video, even better sound. When the dude on the horse first entered Sparta, the bass was kicking. Sounded almost like a drum.

Transformers - Wow! Video is definitely, if not the best of the bunch. The robots are more appreciated because of the details that goes into them compared to SD-DVD. Sound lacked bass for my taste but surround was clean and active, especially in the city.

Shooter - Underwhelmed by it. Sounded good at the theatre but this one lacked more bass than Transformers, pretty much no LFE.

Batman Begins - Video is somewhere in the middle, pretty good but a bit soft. Sound was pretty good, especially the Tumbler chase.

Dawn of The Dead - Video seemed bright compared to SD-DVD. Sound is average, I expected it more surround but the bass of the shotgun does sound awesome.

Dawn of The Dead - Video seemed bright compared to SD-DVD. Sound is average, I expected it more surround but the bass of the shotgun does sound awesome.

I thought the sound in Batman Begins was amazing.. And the PQ was top notch

Transformers was a perfect 5/5 in PQ and AQ for me.

Congrats on the A-1 things built like a tank.

So obviously TF will be the top selling title for the week. What do you guys think will be the rest of the breakdown? More Blu-rays sold or more HD-DVDs?

I'm neutral and prefer Blu-ray now over HD-DVD but I'd like to see HD-DVD win the numbers for last week if only to stick it in the face of the arrogant people on Blu-ray.com's forums :D

Probably Blu-Ray...even though you could geth both formats for BOGO at CC, all the other places were blu-ray only BOGO...that has to weigh in.

Even with the bogo, I don't think BD is going to come even close to the number of HD DVDs sold thanks to TFs.

For that that might be interested in "adult" themed films in HD, there's a 1 day sale going on today.

Thanks bro. It's a bit slow but I'll take it because of the lossless sound through analog.

One question on the HD-A1 setup. Since my sub's x-over frequency is at 0, what should be the player's x-over frequency? I have it now at 80mhz.

For my receiver when I watch regular DVD's I also have it at 80. Thanks!

Well, that press release that someone posted the other day said that TF had sold 190,000 copies on HD-DVD. I don't remember if that was for the week or just Tuesday.

I'm pretty sure that the people in this thread bought 190,000 Blu-rays based on the posts I saw last week. :D

Quote from Michael Bay in support of Blu-ray:

Transformers is the first major film to arrive on HD DVD ($40) since partners Paramount and DreamWorks joined that side of the high-definition video disc format war. Universal also makes its films available exclusively on HD DVD. Sony, Disney and Fox support rival Blu-ray Disc, while Warner releases on both formats.

Bay caused a brouhaha on his blog (michaelbay.com) by voicing his displeasure that Transformers would not be available on Blu-ray and that he was rethinking his plan to direct a sequel. The next day he backpedaled, but he is still upset about the format war.

"It's short-sighted and it has delayed consumers' moving to HD (home video)," he says. "As a director, my critical eye is that Blu-ray is where my money is. Consumers are smart, and they are going to wait it out."

On my player it's set to large because I guess there's a glitch with the a1 having no bass output when set to small.

I just sent him Transformers today. He's never seen the movie but he said he'd take me up on the offer. I told him to let me know whenever he comes to my area so I can buy him drinks, about a 2 hour drive from where he lives.

I posted my story on AVS and I'm getting flamed for it. Wow, maybe I should edit my post and let everyone know he was the one that told me to keep the player for free.

Still have Top Gun and Hulk HD Dvds for trade-Looking for other HD Dvds,Let me know.

BD has the potential to be better, but studios just aren't utilizing it's advantages... yet.

Right now, unless you're an audio freak, there's no major difference between the two format. Both have amazing PQ (depending on the transfer) and solid audio. HD DVD still leads the way with extra and interactive content... I don't see BD ever catching up as BD-J was just a horrible idea to begin with.

The best reason I could tell anyone to buy into one format or the other is to enjoy all the films currently available in HD... why limit yourself to one or the other if you don't have to? :)

I've also thought about getting a PS3 but in all honesty... yeah it would be nice to be able to see all titles released on both formats but I'm just not that interested in Blu-ray. I don't want to offend any Blu-ray guys in here (but too bad :D ) but I really think HD DVD is going to win this thing, or at least get a couple more studios on their side. I'm just going to keep buying HD DVD's I want and renting the titles on DVD I can't get which hasn't been that many. I'm far too busy trying to keep up with what HD DVD has to offer to even bother with what Blu-ray is doing right now.

It might sound cliche already, but the advantage is being format neutral...it's great to be able to just get all the releases and not worry about the format war.

I have not watched it yet but it's getting 4/5 ratings for the movie and PQ at a few places. I haven't seen the movie yet, either, and since I have about 50 I haven't seen yet, it might be this weekend when I get around to watching it....or it might be 2009 :)

Hehe, I've had to to do the same thing for a couple titles my wife wants back in the collection since I sold the DVD. *cough Van Helsing cough*

And 50 titles? Damn, at least you won't have a shortage of anything to watch for a while, lol... :D
