I have an ATI Radeon 5500 with a DVI output. Movies in HD Quicktime and HD WMP look beautifull. Now, I read in PC tools magazine some moths ago, that current graphic cards can“t handle the HDTV format. You know anythig about this?
Some graphic cards don't have the HDCP chip on it, so the TV will not accept the encrypted signal & down convert it to 480p.

if you have an HDTV, it's totally worth it. $200 bucks is a bargain once you see the quality of some of these transfers.
Yeah I have a 42" panasonic Plasma in the bedroom and a 50" Sony LCD in the living room

My TV is 720p native with 1080i support and they look fantastic.
1080p will probably look a bit more smooth, but overall it'd be tough to tell the difference.

12-29-2006, 01:43 PM
Yeah between shipping, higher prices, etc it's not worth it. I'd really like to see a place like best buy have a giant 1 day only sale on next gen dvd's. Something like "hop into 2007 with the next gen of theatre products". Then have ridiculous sales on players and disks. I loved targets 15.99 sale but target doesn't have enough titles to make me actually care.
PrimeBane
12-29-2006, 03:49 PM
It might not be too bad.
If I bought the same 3 movies from Amazon.com at $27.95 US each minus 10% plus $6 shipping and conversion, I saved about $25 CDN. :)
I'm debating whether or not to go pick up 3 more... that is if I can find 3 more that I really want.

Finished up Kingdom of Heaven today....it's a little slower than I remember it, but still a good flick. Definitely strong PQ, although I didn't feel a whole lot of 3D effect from it, but still a sharp, clean image the whole way through.
Next I'm gonna pop in Talladega Nights that came with the PS3....not expecting much out of the PQ from what I've read.
Chugga
12-29-2006, 04:05 PM
If anything just open up Talladega Nights for the rebates....$80's worth of Blu-Ray rebates inside that thing
Chugga
12-29-2006, 04:07 PM
Actually I think it's $70 worth of rebates....not sure how many studios are included into the rebate. But it basically turns ever $25 blu-ray title you buy into a $15 title.

There's a SonyStyle store near me that carries a crapload of Blu-Rays at a decent price. I picked up Underworld Evolution....almost got Tears of the Sun, too.
dayday6
12-30-2006, 12:40 PM
What is a decent price?
I went to Target yesterday, but they were all out of Underworld. I DL the trailer and it looked really good, I remember they had it for $20.
Chugga
12-30-2006, 01:35 PM
Target has by far the best Blu-Ray prices but it's selection is awful. I'm lucky if they have 10 different movies when I show up. My Walmart only carries 3 Blu-Ray movies but their prices are almost comparable with Target. Then of course you've got Best Buy....absolutely awful prices, sales are far and few between, but they eventually get every single title released so what can you do?

Too bad you don't have a Fry's Electronics near you. When the PS3 launched that had several titles for $15. I didn't get any because I didn't have my PS3 yet. They have all the titles & prices are better than Best Buy & Circuit City.
Chugga
12-30-2006, 01:50 PM
Yeah I went with targets $15.99 sale right before the PS3 launched. Thats where I picked up a decent bulk of my collection. I got like 8 titles between the 2 days I went there since I thought it was one of those things you just couldn't pass up. I've been waiting to see a deal like that from somewhere else now for a while but no luck.
But yeah I've always wanted a Fry's....hell I've always wanted a Circuit City just so that I could reap the benefits of them constantly trying to 1-up Best Buy but no luck on either front.

Supposedly both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will have major announcements on the 7th or so at CES...
Possible predictions:
Blu-Ray - Major title announcements, don't expect anything in the way of Universal going neutral yet.
HD-DVD - Possibly another company supporting hardware, maybe Onkyo? Bringing the players down in price?
I know many people are dying for Disney to go neutral and support HD DVD, but I don't see it happening, again just yet.

Also, my wife and I watched Sahara last night.
Man, this is a total showcase for the HD DVD format. Amazing Picture Quality, booming audio, and it's a fun, action-packed movie (I'd never seen it before).
I haven't seen King Kong yet, but Sahara has the best picture quality I've seen to date, better than Rid****, better than KOH on Blu-Ray.

It must be me...but it amazes me that everyone LOVES the PQ on Serenity. Don't get me wrong...I love the movie (Saw it 8 times in the theater) and the PQ is a lot better than the SD DVD...however I find it amazing people on AVS are putting it in the Tier 1 category...I think it was just the way it was filmed...
JaylisJayP
01-03-2007, 07:55 AM
I think it's definitely Tier 1. If you notice in the avs forum they don't take into account what the "director's intent" was or how it was filmed, just the overall result of the picture quality on the HD DVD. If you're only using that guideline, it's hard to argue against Serenity in Tier 1. It is so crisp and colorful with many examples of that 3D pop.

Anyways...on an EVEN BETTER NOTE!!!
2nd generation high definition freestanding Blu-ray players will be announced and displayed by the major CE manufacturers. Prices will drop as much as 50%. Blu-ray recorders are expected to debut as well with ship dates by late 2007.
Good...because there a lot of movies coming to BluRay I would like to watch in HD...just finished the Die Hard trilogy and can't imagine what that will be like!!!
HD DVD will announce new vendors and models and may have entry pricing as low as $299. HD DVD recorders will be announced and demonstrated, with deliveryexpected to be scheduled for 2007.
Cool cool! I wouldn't mind having an actual HD DVD player instead of just the drive running through my 360...
however...
LG Electronics has just announced it will introduce the first dual format high definiton disc player at CES. The player will accomidate HD DVD and Blu-ray discs. The new twin format HD player will be available for sale in the US in early 2007.
All I can say is...."Yippie Kay Yea Motherf-----!!!!"

The LG news is huge if true....now it just totally doesn't matter about the format war.
Personally, I wouldn't touch a movie on Blu-Ray that's also on HD DVD, so this will up the ante for Sony and force them to enhance the quality of their format.

"bad" as in good or "bad" as in awful? The CGI in King Kong looked almost seamless with the real environments, to me. Even my wife noticed, and she said she "couldn't see a difference" when I fixed up my 360 to 1080 (with component cables). Her seeing a difference really means there is a difference. She never notices stuff like that.
Huge news for the format war - I was kinda bummed that I'd never see The Incredibles or Spider-Man on HD-DVD, now it won't matter with the dual format players:)
Of course, what will I do with my 360 HD add-on once the combo players are released? Is a firmware/software update in the future going to allow BR play on the HD-DVD drive, or is that impossible?

Bad is a BAD movie. The CGI was hit and miss. Kong looked spectacular...and the T-Rex fight was amazing. But the stegasarus stampede scene was HORRENDOUS. It looked incredible bad and one could very much tell the Blue Screen effect.
Not possible to play BluRay with the HDDVD Drive. Perhaps they will release a cheap bluray drive though...

Yes, the Kong and T-Rex parts were outstanding - I have always thought the stampede scene was second rate CGI, though.

Yeah I don't know...KONG was just not a good movie in my opinion.
The movie was full of pointless subplots (little jimmy and his black mentor...ugh)
Hit and miss CGI...
Bad casting decisions (Jack Black will always have the Tenacious D personna)
Jokes that were completly unfunny ("I knwo who made this large footprint...the abominable snowman!")
It was a major dissapointment form Peter Jackson...who I think is a great director. LotR...The Frighteners...DeadAlive....all great flicks...but this one just didn't do it for me.
By the way...as far as the duel player is concerned...rumors are floating around of a $1199 price tag....ouch:mad:

Not to sidetrack too much, but count me in as someone who was disappointed with King Kong as a movie - even though I saw it twice in theaters.
In the movie industry, you almost always need someone to counter the creative genius to reel them in at times when they go overboard. Spielberg needed it on Jaws - he wanted the viewer to see the shark from start to finish.
A great editor could have made Kong a masterpiece. As it stands, it is a severely flawed, but fun, adventure film.

Lionsgate just released an announcement too saying they are going to continue to support blu-ray and then gave a pretty weak list of titles that they'd be releasing. (ultimate avengers and waiting being the only 2 I'd think of picking up)
Truth be told I'm VERY excited with what I read. I was afraid Blu-Ray was going to hold back on my favorite titles until there was more of a fanbase for the technology but seeing Man on Fire, Independence Day, Pirates, Finding Neverland, Big Fish, Remember the Titans, Glory, etc all right around the corner I can honestly say I'm really psyched for 2007.

MGM/Fox for the most part said they would only be backing one horse for the foreseeable future so I'm not believing that idea too much either. I'm sure it would have been HUGE news at CES when they first started presenting and seeing as though their press release is already out I'm doubting it. I like what Warner is doing but the question I ask is what do the dual display boxes look like? And how expensive are these disks? It sounded like a great idea at first but I'd like to see a little bit more info on how much this is going to hurt my wallet first.
With that being said I don't really care about the picture quality of Glory....it's one of those movies that I'd buy on any format just to watch a million times. Extras would be nice, but I just love the movie so much that it doesn't really bother me either way.

Interesting... I don't know how true this rumor is or not, but I've read that Fox will follow Warner's example and release combo HD-DVD/Blu-Ray/DVD disks sometime in the 2nd quarter.
I'm taking this with a grain of salt for now...
Makes me wonder why sony and whoever hddvd execs can't just co-operate and live happily ever after to begin with in this bluray - hddvd battle. With Total HD or whatever and now this, the studios seem to be "friends".

It's all about money... if Sony crushed HD-DVD then they get all the royalties for Blu-Ray and vice versa.
If there's a dual disk, everyone is paying Warner royalties as well.

^^ Yeah, check out the Blu-Ray software area in AVSforums, a lot of HD DVD supporters even admit to it. By the end of 2007, I think we can already see the clear winner of the two.
Chugga
01-09-2007, 01:02 PM
I'm not going to say clear winner but anyone following the whole blu-ray/hddvd thing would have seen that Blu-Rays studio support if it ever actually "kicked in" would be a nice advantage for them. In 2007 it looks like studios (mainly disney which I'm suprised by) aren't going to sit back and let this play out they are going to actually deliver titles people want to see. This is still in it's infancy so I'm not going to proclaim anything but as a blu-ray supporter I'm just excited to see that alot of titles that I bought into this technology for are going to be coming out in 2007.
I still feel the need to pick up an HD DVD player one of these days (mainly because Weinstein is actually bringing out their heavy hitters) but I'm not going to rush out like I was planning to. Universals just gotta get out there and do more then the usual "we support HD DVD by releasing movies, thank you and goodnight". Gotta stop acting like Scottie Pippen and start acting like Michael Jordan. If HD DVD was a tripod Universal would be 2 of the freakin legs, they gotta make something happen, and right now I haven't heard anything out of CES from them....although it could very well be the calm before the storm.

Seriously they are slipping up. CES is what sets the new year in motion. It puts the technology out there that we should all be looking forward to and tells us why we should buy it. When you for the most part come out to CES and say "yeah we're going to keep on doing the same thing we've been doing" who is going to get excited about that?
CES has given Blu-Ray fans dozens of things to cheer about within a 2 day period and Universal the biggest HD DVD supporter that actually matters shows up with nothing. It's like forgetting to bring your project to the science fair.....where the winner gets himself a few billion dollars.

As an avid HD DVD supporter this whole CES thing is very dissapointing.
HOWEVER...there are things one must remember...
CES is not a place to show off your upcoming films...its a place for technology. The only reason this happened last year with both camps is that they needed software to go with their hardware. This year it is about what upgrades to the hardware you have coming up.
The BDA however felt they needed to release a list of their upcoming titles while HDDVD simply said "We have over 300 titles coming in 2007."
The other trump card for HD DVD is New Line Cinema. Right now we all know they are backing HD DVD even if they havnt released any info yet. If they are HDDVD exclusive then this fight is still anybodies game. Right now New Line is only listed on HDDVDs site and not BluRays and the BDA has yet to make ANY mention of New Line.
If HD DVD gets the Lord of the Rings...It's going to get really interesting.
Either way, I think I am going to pick up a PS3 in a couple months if only for Pirates and Die Hard...and perhaps 24 when it is released :D

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm very happy with the announcements and the titles coming out this year...on a typical month I'll buy 2 movies, so even having 30 titles that are must buys for me will keep me busy with both formats in the year ahead.
Plus I need to save up money for the influx of video games coming out this year, including what I'm sure will run $100 in guitar hero for 360.

Quick question when did it become common knowledge that New Line was only going to HD DVD? Despite the logo at the look and sound of perfect that doesn't really mean too much. New Line has the same issues Warner has...which is good for movie fans. Warner wanted to go 100% HD DVD but Time Warner and AOL completely stopped that idea from happening and now as you can see they are format neutral. New Line can for the most part say/do whatever they want to but the Time Warner/AOL hammer will strike down before they get to release even one movie telling them to support both formats for the most possible money.
New Line has been format neutral since day 1 anyways just waiting on the sidelines until more people had players in their homes. If anything much like their brother company you'll likely see these "THD" disks come from them....it's Time Warners/AOLs cash cow....it's basically like releasing a DVD, it completely negates all of the format boundaries.

Whats funny about that article is that Warner, HBO, and New Line all vow alliegence to HD DVD. But like I was saying in my last post....Time Warner/AOL simply won't let that vow happen....which is why as of today my local Best Buy's blu-ray section goes completely against anything that article just said.
The articles also VERY old though, I don't think Blu-Ray had many supporters what-so-ever as of when that article was released. Blu-Ray didn't pick up much steam until midway through 2005.

Unfortunately it's not. Last I heard on the LOTR's front was it's at the VERY earliest mid-2008. Peter Jackson was swamped with work and wanted to put forth alot of effort onto the HD release and his schedule wouldn't be cleared until 2008. If I had to place bets I'd put money on us not seeing it until christmas of 2008.
I'm still baffled about Spiderman, they gotta get those disks out quick so they can capitalize on a day/date release of Spiderman3 in HD. Very disappointed that Sony didn't even mention the word "Spiderman" so far in CES.

Man, forget the superversions of LOTR... just give me the movies! I was lucky enough to watch ROTK in HD over Xmas and it was [b]beautiful]/b] to say the least.
As for Spiderman, I bet Sony is waiting for a magic number of BD players on the market before taking that leap.
Chugga
01-10-2007, 04:39 PM
But this is like the chicken/egg scenario. Do you wait for a certain number of BD players to be on the market before releasing the movie or do you release the movie and then the movie alone helps you sell those target amount of players.
I'm hoping Sony is taking the approach Wingnut talks about...the big hype of releasing all the Spiderman movies at the peak of his popularity (the 3rd film sounds like it's going to be flat out amazing). Best case scenario they are waiting for a giant PS3 shipment so they can sell the Spiderman movies in Gamestops, ToysRus, Best Buy, where-ever. But from what I've seen no one should have any problems finding a PS3 as of right now.

They're "supposed to" come out on Tuesday just like regular DVDs. But most employees at stores have no clue about next gen disks and tend put them out late (sometimes early if you're lucky).
In my experience, if a movie comes out in Blu-Ray or HD-DVD on a particular day, you probably won't find it until the next week.

Just a heads up to correct some of the stuff I was talking about yesterday.
1. First and foremost New Line is currently working on LOTR's in hi def so it may not be as far off as we had thought.
2. Supposedly the THD technology isn't going to cost some ridiculous amount to make...the materials cost the same as DVD...just wondering how much it costs to put 2 movies on 1 disk...could get pricey but from the sounds of it they are trying to keep costs down
3. The THD box art looks awful.....I'll just leave it at that.
4. In order to get more studios on board you don't actually have to pay royalties to Warner for the THD technology
5. New Line and HBO have officially signed on for the THD project. So looks like that Time Warner/AOL hammer I was speaking of yesterday has already been swung.

But like I was saying my Best Buy is coming in....Crank was out day 1 and covenant was out only a couple days after release.

2.If that is the case Blu-Ray & HD-DVD cost the same to make as DVD, and what I have read that is not the case. Whoever makes a disc will have to pay both camps though, so won't the disc be more expensive?
5.New Line is part of Warner, so they have to support it right? That is really nothing

It's going to be more expensive but the big issue was the cost of the disk itself. There was alot of grey area on what the new technology would cost and now with this new information it's on par with DVD so the main cost you'll be having to pay is that to the camps themselves like you said....not the disk.
As for New Line it's a part of Time Warner/AOL....Warner Bros the studio have connections with New Line but nothing big enough where Warner Bros could say "make this!" and they'd be at their mercy. Time Warner/AOL on the other hand if they say "make this!" then they are making it. New Line was another one of the grey areas....they've got a giant catalog of great movies but they've always been very secretive with their plans. One would guess that anything Warner Bros did New Line would eventually follow suit but you never know, it's better to have it in writing. And now seeing as though New Line has adopted the THD idea Lord of the Rings is no longer a "god I hope I get it" title...it's a "I can't wait to get it".
You can't really get much more concrete evidence as to who New Line is supporting then hearing that New Line was the first studio to sign up for Warners THD program. A program based upon format neutrality.

Porn won't have nearly the outcome it had in previous wars.
Sorry, but that's just how it is shaping up at this point. As people have said, sometimes details are better left covered up.
I'll never understand why people get so riled up over format wars - I paid $200 dollars to get into this "war", so I could watch 10-15 certain films in gorgeous HD with great surround sound. If my format loses, my player doesn't blow up and my DVDs give read errors. I'll just shrug and buy the prevailing player (assuming HD-DVD doesn't win), and go about my business. I've spent $200 on far worse things that gave me far less in return, so I'm hardly going to get riled up.
So long as I get Children of Men, Blade Runner, and The Fountain (all of which are slated for 1st half of 2007 releases, assuming they are day and date and these studios follow the typical 6 month release pattern from Theater ---> DVD, cept for Blade Runner of course), it + the other 10 movies I own have made this purchase well worth while.

Kung Fu Hustle is an ok movie, it is one of those quirky Hong Kong comedies. House of flying Daggers was a bad movie.IMO Too many flaws with no payoff at the end, combine that with the low rating for PQ and I will pass.

Kung Fu Hustle I popped into the PS3 for a couple minutes just to check it out haven't seen the full movie yet but from what I've seen it was a good movie. Best movies on that entire list is Monster House and Black Hawk Down.

Just fyi, was out at a mall this weekend and saw that FYE has started carrying Blu Ray and HD DVD titles.
It's weird, the store had a full endcap of them, and then many titles mixed in with their DVD counterpart, with a Blu-Ray/HD DVD divider placed in there to let people know about it.
The prices were predictably higher, but they had a good selection, including Deer Hunter, which I haven't seen at Best Buy or CC around here yet.
Haven't bought anything from them yet, but it's good to see another store finally carrying them.

I'm not positive there's an online list... best to email Blockbuster customer service directly and ask them about locations in your city.
Well, it was a pretty good idea, but Blockbuster's customer service is about what I expected it to be. Essentially, they told me how to use the 'store locator' and then how to 'browse movies'. The second email at least apologized for not giving me any useful info.
More interestingly though, the Blockbuster site links all of the HD DVDs and Blu-Rays back to the Standard Def DVDs when you go to look for availability (which doesn't help much if you're trying to find stores carrying HD DVD). They're all listed at $21.99 (including normally higher priced titles like MI 3), which I'd guess would correspond to the SD DVD price. Anybody want to gamble on buying a few titles and seeing if Blockbuster will correct their mistake for sending you the wrong version (a la the TRU.com chase scam that's so en vogue on the sportsboard).
It probably won't amount to anything since it shows up as 'DVD' format when added to your cart, but if their customer service is good, then you could end up getting the DVD for free or getting the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray shipped at no additional cost since it's their screwed up website.

From what I've seen, the extras are pretty much the same as most special ed DVDs. And it depends on the HD-DVD... some have tons of extras while others just have the basics.
The cool part is, you can access them at anytime while the movie is still running (at least with HD-DVD... I don't know about Blu-Ray).
As for a superbit HD disk, with today's codecs I'm not sure how much benefit one would see... but I'd definately like to see it. :)

It depends on the release. With X-Men 3 on BD, the special feautures were very small. A few deleted scenes, alternative endings and movie trailers. Im sure the DVD had a helluva lot more. The main reason why the special features were slim is cause X-Men 3 was released on a single layer BD.
But with MI:III, there is a whole second disc filled with special features. I wish X-men 3 came with a second disc given the 34.99 price tag. The most expensive regular movie BD i've seen so far.
Im sure when more BD's become burned on dual-layer, we'll start getting a hail storm of bonus extras since it will be a 50gb disc. The reason why the majority of these first releases of BD are on single layer is cause they've had problems successfully burning on dual layer. I read that the problems have been remedied and more releases will be on dual layer discs.

FINALLY... about time there was a Universal announcement :)
http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents
Afternoon, everyone. I just wanted to jump in here with some late-breaking high-def news. Universal, presumably to make up for their relative silence at CES, has just announced that they're planning more than 100 exclusive releases on the HD-DVD format in 2007... and they've revealed at least a few new titles that are on the way (if not specific release dates). The first 40-50 of these will be available in the first half of 2007, starting with Brokeback Mountain (now available) and Hollywoodland (on 2/6). Also on the way to HD-DVD in 2007 according to the studio (90% of the titles as DVD/HD-DVD Combo releases) are new films like Children of Men, The Good Shepherd and Smokin' Aces, as well as classic catalog titles like Scarface, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Bruce Almighty, The Bourne Identity, Meet the Fockers, American Pie, Inside Man, Pride & Prejudice, The Big Lebowski, Liar Liar, Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Brazil, Erin Brockovich, Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Slap Shot and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The studio also confirmed that the first season of Sci-Fi's new Battlestar Galactica will be released on HD-DVD this year, as well as additional TV series titles yet to be announced. There's definitely some cool titles in that list, and presumably more (and more details) will be announced at a later date. It'll be great to see Lebowski and Brazil in HD, that's for sure... and the prospect of Battlestar has us pretty excited too.
Children of Men :D
Battlestar Galactica :D
The rest aren't must buys for me, but I imagine I'll pick up the odd title.

Man just got the HD-DVD addon for the 360 with King Kong and picked up MIP3..
Holy bleeping crap!!! Simply amazing. Even the GF was really impressed.
I was going to wait but went ahead and bought it today and glad I did. Best $200 I have ever spent.. This is what Movies should be like
The only thing that sucks about HD DVD is you notice everything on someones face now. Like in MIP3 you could see every wrinkle, every zit everything on their faces. Not sure how Hollywood stars are going to like this..
Anyone have any HD-DVD's they are not found of and want to sell? LMK and if its something I might want then we can work a deal for them.

Watched World Trade Center last night... amazing PQ for the most part, espeically the landscape shots. The darker scenes were a little grainy.

I just picked up Pear Harbor, Italian Job (blue ray) and Friday Night Lights (HD). I haven't watched any of them yet to see how their PQ is but I will soon. Was thinking about getting S.W.A.T. and Memento on blue ray. The Meijer store near me has them for $21.95 each. I think that's a fair price.

Here Is a good article to read about Porn and the new formats.
http://gear.ign.com/articles/759/759068p1.html
This is the part I find interesting. And why I dont think Porn will help either format like some think.. It will help it but not make it the "Winner"
"For the first time ever the industry went into a recession last year, due to the glut of product in the marketplace and all the free porn that's on the internet. At this point the small to middle tier companies can't make it because of the internet. Most of these people can't afford to go the Blu-ray route at this point".

I went to Walmart today on just some weird hunch that they might actually have more then the 2 blu-ray movies they normally have (X-men&Mission Impossible). I came up big, found both the guardian and pearl harbor. The guardian was impressive....not only did I like the movie but the transfer was one of the best I've seen. Some of the ocean scenes are just ridiculous....word of advice if you are picking up the movie....don't read the back of the dvd case - biggest spoiler in the world is on it.
Also news to blu-ray fans the buy 1 get 1 free deal is back at best buy the week of febuary 4th. This time with Into the Blue and House of Flying Daggers added. I've been toying with the idea of picking up Click and Into the Blue next week but I don't know if I can justify buying Into the Blue just to see jessica alba in high def. I already have Fantastic 4 for that.

HOFD was part of the deal the last time around, also. There's a different second title this time, but I can't think of the name of it off the top of my head.

Yeah but even with great picture quality I don't want to buy crappy movies that just look really good. It was a huge problem I had with dvds. I joined in on that fad really early too and found myself buying alot of "oh I guess that movies ok". So when it was all said and done I had a giant dvd collection filled with a ton of stuff I'd never actually want to watch a second time (some things a first time). Granted I've had that problem a bit with blu-ray...I mean I did buy stealth when it was on sale for $15....but otherwise I've been trying to steer clear of that.
By the way the other newly added title was The Fifth Element. But unfortunately I already have that or I would have gotten it this time around.
The only thing that I don't understand is replacing all of your movies with HD and/or Blu-ray.
No offense to anyone's collection but do you really need HD versions of Blazing Saddles or 50 First Dates?
I can understand big movies that are SFX driven like The Island, The Mummy, King Kong, Pearl Harbor, etc. Or simply your favorite movies.

You're bang on ilas... I think a lot of people that were early adopters of DVD, like myself, are trying to avoid the "buy it all" mentality again.
Granted, I think a lot of us have mental lapses (I'm still not sure why I bought World Trade Center and Miami Vice), but for the most part I think most are trying to just replace the movies where the formats really show off the PQ. (that and who knows what the format of choice will be in 5 years... BD, HD-DVD, HVD, downloads?)

You're right ilas. I've only been picking up random movies that I really, really like and felt that it was worth it to invest in the HD version as it would enhance the experience (i.e. replacing my Batman Begins DVD w/ an HD version).

But as the article notes, just because its on the list, doesn't mean it will be released. :(

I was at Best Buy today and noticed Beerfest was 29.99 for Blu-Ray and 36.99 for HD DVD. Didn't make any sense to me at all since it's not an HD DVD combo.
Either way, it's pretty expensive, but things like this and the forced HD DVD combos are driving me to buy Blu-Ray instead for those titles that are released on both formats at the same time.

The thing that kinda sucks is that 90% of Universal HD DVD movies in the year ahead supposedly will be combos, which means 5-10 bucks more expensive.
Hell, they're already pretty pricey for one movie, I can't ever see myself spending 35-40 bucks on these things.

I went to Walmart today to get my Blu-Ray movies not Best Buy like usual. After going around shopping today at a number of different locations I've come to the conclusion that Best Buy doesn't suck as much as I originally thought they did....although they do suck.
First and foremost Walmarts are finally starting to put out the family oriented titles. Within the last 2 days I've been able to land The Guardian, Pearl Harbor, and Open Season for AT LEAST $5 less then the Best Buy counterparts (although Best Buy didn't even have them).
But to top it off Best Buy actually gets Blu-Ray titles in...they just sell out because they get a laughable amount of copies in.
I just hope Walmart keeps up the good work. I'll take $19.95 and $24.95 any day of the week.
