Thanks man. I was confused why people on avs were flaming me when I wrote that he wanted me to keep it. They acted like I was ripping him off. You're probably right though, just haters.

I'm not jealous at all. I was just wondering since it seems that guy went above and beyond to help you out. I was just wondering if you reciprocated the gesture.

I screened some scenes from all the Kubrick movies I bought on Blu-ray yesterday last night and I'm really impressed with them. Full Metal Jacket finally looks really good. Eyes Wide Shut looks really good even though I had heard it had a lot of grain, which I didn't notice a lot of. The Shining looks amazing! Lots of depth and color. But 2001, wow.....absolutely amazing picture quality for such an old film. The colors are striking! But above all the PCM soundtracks on them all really shine for me. Especially with all the classical music in 2001. I really put my home theater through the ropes last night screening all of them. Now I just have to find the time to watch them all properly... :D

The 20GB version also plays the old PS2 games, if you can still find one. It should be even cheaper, but not likely to include anything more than the standard 5 BR deal. You can always upgrade the hard drive later.

Doesn't include Wi-fi and memory card slots though.

It was more of a comment towards the avsforum members, which Grif32 is a part of. They're calling me a sociopath and scam artist even though the seller is fully aware of the situation. I've already offerred to pay him for his troubles but he wouldn't take the money at all. But I guess to that forum, if an owner is knowingly giving his player for free, he's been conned.

Anyhow, enough of that topic back to HD-DVD. I changed my analog speaker settings to "small" and more bass can be felt. Especially in Shooter when it was close to none the first time I watched it. Transformers is getting more bass as well. Woo hoo!

hopefully someone here will know how to do this:

i'm wanting to be able to run my 360 (which i'm using for my main DVD player) through these speakers (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836121121) without having to keep switching plugs between my 360 and my PC...also, if possible, i'd like to be able to use the speakers for this TV (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16889179002)...i'm thinking i'm going to have to get something like a Creative DDTS-100 Decoder, but i'd like to do it cheaper if there is a way to do so...

so, any ideas? :D

Yes I am part of the Avsforum. Thanks for pointing that out  Just like most on here are.

Anyway. Thats what I was getting at. Set the speakers to small and the bass will have more punch to it. Transformers sounds sweet.

I am far from jealous you got the A1 for free. I think the whole problem was the way it was presented.

Like I said enjoy it. Its built like a tank and its a great pc of equipment.

I agree. It was probably the way I wrote it. I was just excited and wanted to share my experience on how I got my player but I should have written it with more details.

Now the thread is becoming a flame war, pretty much me defending myself and one guy who got what I was trying to say vs. 25 or so posters trying to be the moral police.
I'm done posting on that thread.

I shall never doubt you regarding HD technology. Bass is coming out more. How do I calibrate my setup when I can only change the levels on the A1 and not the receiver. I read the test tones for the A1 are out of whack and I should use a calibration disk. With my Onkyo, I can't edit the level settings when I choose "multichannel".

I really want a ps3 just for the blue ray player. I wish I could buy one without a controller and just a dvd remote though. And if the ps3 ever gets a game I want then id pick up a controller

JaylisJayP
10-24-2007, 06:12 PM
the PS3 remote is great and it's only $25....no big deal to pick it up. The controller acts as a remote, as well, so you technically don't need the remote anyway.

OK, you guys will know this, since I'm too lazy to find out on my own, and I actually can't find anything.

1) Any truth to the fact that using off brand HDMI/TosLink cables for PS3 voids the warranty, or is that a crock of ****? Not that I care, but it follows in to part 2...

2) Do Sony/Microsoft offer extended warranties on the PS3/X360 through the respective companies? I bought my PS3 from Amazon and Halo 360 from Gamestop, and I'd like to extend the warranties if possible... but it's not a must really.

Waiting for Primebane...

1. Nope, they can't tell what cables are used and if they ask, you have no real obligation to tell them they were off brand. I'd say 95% of the people in this thread use monoprice or some other cables for their AV equipment. I have an HDMI cable from them for my PS3.

2. Nope, no extended warrenties through Sony or MS. 360 does have a standard 3 year warrenty on it now though, so you should be fine. PS3 is solid as a rock so far. I don't think I've heard of 5 people with a defective console.

#1 sounds bogus, I've never heard of that.

I think all the big stores - BB, CC, Gamestop, Sears, Wal-Mart, Target - they all offer some sort of extended warranty separate from Microsoft/Sony. Best Buy I've found to be the best and easiest. Circuit City's warranties are EXPENSIVE. Wal-Mart's might be cheap, but I think it's just provided through another company and you have to mail it away...not sure about Targets.

Best Buy's warranty on the 360/PS3 used to be $60, but they might be $80-$100 now. I've used mine 3 times on the 360 already and once on the PS3, and each time they just swapped it out for a brand new one in-store...plus I was upgraded to the 60G PS3 because the 40G I had was discontinued.

civictyperboy
10-24-2007, 09:33 PM
um MP...no off brand hdmi cables or whatever will not void your warranty and no Sony does not offer extended service plans on any playstation hardware, now stores like best buy or gamestop will, however that is their own service, and not backed by Sony

Anyone know why some of the HD DVD movies are formatted in Super Wide screen. The black bars take up atleast 40% of my TV!! When I zoom in it gets all blurry. This happened on Transformers and Blood Diamond. Is there something wrong with my 360 add on setting or TV settings? I have a 40 inch 720p Samsung LCD and I also have Blu Ray. I really notice a huge leap in Blu Ray, but not so much in HD DVD...I just feel like I have some kind of setting wrong for HD DVD.

I have the same TV as you except mine does 1080i. What you are seeing with these "super wide screen" movies is how the Director filmed it and it's what he/she intended you to see. What you're seeing is the original aspect ratio and that's how the movie should be watched. Even if black bars take up 40% of your screen, so be it. You DON'T zoom in with your TV. Never ever do that. All you're doing is distorting the picture quality.

Take a look at the diagram below. Then in the future, look on the back of the HD-DVD/Blu-ray cases to see what the aspect ratio is and how you can expect it to look on your TV. :)

I like it better because instead of having to hit the triangle button to bring up the settings menu during Blu-ray movies all the functions in that menu are mapped to buttons on the remote. Much easier and quicker to change the audio, subtitle, etc.

Then there's A Clockwork Orange, which is 1.66:1. In this case, because the 16:9 screen has a wider aspect ratio than the source material, vertical bars must be used to allow for full viewing of the 1.66:1 image without any distortion....

For the 360 HD problem

You probably need to go onto your dashboard...go to your settings blade....and change the setting to reflect "720P" + "Widescreen"

My favorite aspect ratio is the 2.35:1

How does the Toshiba A2 stack up? Is it a barebones player....middle of the road...or top quality???

Hey guys I would RUN to your local Best Buy, I went in and grabed the Xbox add on and got Heroes for free and matrix box set and Sopranos 2nd half for free total out the door $194 and some change.......RUN

It's not intentional. The promo says that the two free movies have to be $34.99 or less. But the computer is ignoring that and allowing box sets like Planet Earth and Matrix UE to be free. I would get there tonight as I dont see this lasting very long

Someone chime in here......isn't there something you lose capability with when using the add on as your HD DVD player?

Is it HDMI sound?

I remember there being a specific reason as to why I said "i'm not buying the add on" to myself.

JaylisJayP
10-25-2007, 06:02 PM
well, it could be, since the HD DVD add-on doesn't have HDMI, although I don't know all that may have changed with the Elite 360.

what's with these big stores screwing up so horribly on these deals? Is high-def media that complicated to program a computer system deal for?

I don't know, I guess it's great that consumers are getting a good deal (I know I took advantage of the CC BOGO), but my gut tells me in the long run if Best Buy gets pissed about losing business on this, their high-def prices (probably all prices) will stay higher as a result.

imaginegrafix
10-25-2007, 06:23 PM
That deal is insane - will be shocked if it's not caught tonight and fixed in their systems tomorrow.

I don't even think they really intended for the extra 2 movies w/ the 360 add on, but their ad left the door open on that.

Jaylis - This is best buy's screw up, if they get pissed it should be at their employees for messing up - Either way they are alwasy going to charge a bit more on hd media, just like they do with everything else.

Ohh the picture is much better..Pretty much right on par with Blu Ray. I'm not one to argu which is better and all of that. I just love HD movies! Also the black bars have been reduced to like 20% insted of 40% so that is much better too. Now I am going to need help buying a new TV for my room. I want a 1080p LCD about 40-42 inch would do. If you see any good deals online that would be great. I am mostly looking to buy one at CC because I have a credit card with them and my mom works for them so I try and support them as well.

Anyone try this with Blu-Ray discs as well?

I am selling the individual parts at a loss, yes...all I need to do is sell off 1 more add-on and I'm square with my original cost. Here's how it's worked for me.

Best Buy Total: 380

Planet Earth sold - 45
1 add-on sold - 125
Sopranos sold - 50
Heroes sold - 45

So, I need like 120 or something for my last add-on and I've made back my money, leaving me this stuff for absolutely free.

- Heroes
-Sopranos Season 6 Part 1
-Sopranos Season 6 Part 2
-1 set of 5-free mail-in HD DVDs

The nice thing is so far it looks like I'll only have to ebay 1 item. And I get to help people out with discounted crap at the same time.

Oh, and as Holland said, the ultimate insult to injury - 380 Best Buy Reward Zone points.

Dawn of the Dead remake
Pulse (blind buy)
House of Wax remake
Terminator 3
The Road Warrior
Caddyshack
Waterworld
Under Siege

I also got NL Christmas Vacation which is a must own Christmas movie for me. It only has 2 channel sound though, what's up with that? This is one movie I would double dip over tho so if they clean it up and and use TrueHD audio or whatever I'll get it again.

And Black Rain is sold.

A good price, yes, but the .99 shipping option said something like 10 or more business days for arrival.

If the image of the Best Buy flier is accurate, they'll have it for 5 bucks more and I can walk in Tuesday and get it instead of waiting 2 weeks.

What would hacking BD+ mean? Is that the copyright protection scheme used? Is there really a point to it anyway? Everything gets hacked at some point.

Fox dropping their releases from the market would be dumb considering DVD has been hacked for like 3 years now and they still put out DVDs.

BD+ is the extra layer of protection on BDs that Fox was all wet about. They are by far and away the largest antipirate studio and they go that extra mile to protect their content. BD+ was supposed to make BDs uncrackable.

As for DVDs, they profit margin is large enough that they can't ignore it...

Not that OCD at all. I try to never buy "greatest hits" game cases when they hit the markdown price, I'll specifically hunt down the old version (and in some cases, pay a few bucks more).

OK, I've been working on having everything hooked up once and for all for my entertainment center - one last question.

For my Wii, should I just hook it up to my TV, use the Coax out from my TV to my receiver, and use that to do the Dolby Pro Logic II Surround? I don't think I have a choice otherwise, unless I get RCA jack extenders and hook the Wii's RCA cables up to the receiver.

God damn technology, too many cables...

Wii question for you all, since I know some of you have one.

I'm starting to get what I would call a dirty picture. Basically, I have some pixels pop-up that are not right for the screen. So if I'm looking at a menu or playing Wii Tennis for example, you can see some spots, which are pixel shaped that are the wrong color.

That make sense to anyone? Any ideas? I have it hooked up via component cables to a Sony SXRD KDS-50A2000. I'm thinking it just started happening, as I never noticed it before and I can't ignore it now.

HDMI is HDMI is HDMI (basically). It's a digital signal. It either works, or it doesn't. There is SOME chance of interference, but it's not like in the past where there was some noticable differences between cheap and expensive component cables.

If it's already on HDMI, you are good to go.

This happened to me, too. Started with a few games on a few screens and then it was appearing everywhere. It is a problem with your graphics card. It's not your cable or anything heat related. You need to send it in for repair at Wii. That's what I did and they fixed it.

Any suggestions on how to calibrate HD-A1's audio besides buying HD's calibration disk?

I'm using analog multichannel and can't control the levels on the receiver, only through the player.

I tried using an SD Avia calibration disc and it seems out of whack with the player. When tested with a sound meter, the subwoofer was about 5 level too cold.

I was watching regular dvd's last night and the rear speakers were definitely louder than the fronts. But when I watch HD's it seems to be balanced (I think the sub might be a little too loud, not sure yet).

I want HD-DVD to pull through, and Warner wont make a choice till after the 4th Q numbers are in. With the prices of HD-DVD players only going down in price, I think this holiday season will be a huge push for HD and will sell a ton of players.

BTW Target's Spider-Man Triolgy is in a flipper case

Who is picking up all of the Pixar stuff next week?

Great Pixar films + a high def format = drool?

Geeze Mark, all the article says it that they're re-valuating. :p

Of course they'll be positive about BD at a BD conference.

People are reading WAY too much into this right now.

Remember, Paramount was right behind BD too right up until they went exclusive...

All we can do right now is wait and see what happens. :)

I bought the Spiderman trilogy at BB, no mask but they gave out a Spiderman trick or treat bag.

On Spiderman 2 they also have Spiderman 2.1 on there.

Never seen 2.1, so that is cool.

Why do all these Blu-Ray releases keep getting delayed? Because of the BD+ thingy?

IMO, it's a combination of:

1. BD+ not playing well with stand alone machines
2. Not enough plants producing BD50s
