If I put my Miis on my Wiimote, can I put them back on my Wii later?

Any suggestions on how to calibrate HD-A1's audio besides buying HD's calibration disk?
I'm using analog multichannel and can't control the levels on the receiver, only through the player.
I tried using an SD Avia calibration disc and it seems out of whack with the player. When tested with a sound meter, the subwoofer was about 5 level too cold.
I was watching regular dvd's last night and the rear speakers were definitely louder than the fronts. But when I watch HD's it seems to be balanced (I think the sub might be a little too loud, not sure yet).
What do you mean you can not control the levels on the Receiver? Like when you hit the Multi Channel button nothing else will work?
What do you have your subwoofer set at and what reciever do you have.
Mine is the same. HD seems full and working and SD sounds off.

Since you're sending it back to Nintendo, they should sent you your Wii back with everything still intact, including your Miis...although you will have to redownload any Virtual Console games you had, but it should be free.
That's what's nice about sending it back to Nintendo as opposed to switching it out at Best Buy or Circuit City.

Watching Spider-Man 1 on Blu-ray right now. I'm pretty impressed so far. It's the best it's ever looked. The grain during the bright scenes is minimal. Haven't watched any night scenes yet.

Been watching some more. I was expecting to be disappointed like some of the reviews I've read. The only thing I've noticed is the slight bit of grain but for the most part I can ignore it. The other thing is the contrast in the skin tones is a little too hot. You can notice it in the hallway fight scene when Flash attacks Peter. Other than that I'm pretty impressed. It's the best it's ever looked and sounded.

When my receiver(Onkyo 502) is on multi channel, I can't change the options(level, distance, crossover frequency). I have the option on changing the options when it's a toslink or rca.
My subwoofer is set around 5.5. On the hd dvd player it's set at -12.
I don't know if it's my calibration setup but Dawn of The Dead's track is out of whack. LFE is really loud with the gunshots but the dialogue is low. So I constantly have to turn it up and down. Usually when this occurs, it's a calibration problem, I recalibrated it again using the avia calibration sd-dvd and it still has the issue. I'm wondering if the only solution is to use the DVE calibration disk?

No... Transformers was supposed to just win the week. I don't think any sane HD DVD supporter thought TF would kill off BD.
The only reason it didn't win the week was due to the Disney bogo sale... a smart move on the part of the BDA. Even then, the split was 51:49... pretty damn good still considering how BD players in home vastly outnumber HD DVD players in homes.
Never the less, the TF HD DVD sold a pile of disks. :)

I support both but saying Transformers "failed to register on the radar" is complete BS. It DID "register on radar" and in a big way. It closed the gap that week to the tune of 51:49. Also, it wasn't supposed to kill BD but it easily would have if the Blu BOGO deals wouldn't have taken place. Please don't troll our thread here with fanboy BS.

$98 HD-DVD player is tempting, but I guess I'm not lke the rest of you in that I don't buy a ton of movies. I just get the ones I really like, so being format neutral would be nice, but it isn't so important. Still, being able to see TF in HD would rock.
Is it wrong that I'm concerned that if I got it that I have no room in my entertainment stand for it? I'm sure it is thicker than my current Sony DVD player. I really have no where to put it.

From the Toshiba A2 spec sheet
Viewing high-definition content and up-converting DVD content may require an HDCP capable DVI or HDMI input on your display device.
Will it not display HD-DVD's in 1080i on my RPTV over component? Do I need a HDMI-DVI converter instead? Then I can ditch the Denon upconverting DVD player if that's the case. I have a DVI-D input but no HDMI.
PrimeBane

For HD DVDs you'll be fine with component... but you won't be able to use the upcoverting capabilites of the A2 over it. You have to have HDMI or DVI for that.

I would say with 99% certainty that it is the old version
the list of titles is the same crappy list that you see whenever a retailer is giving away movies or doing the free by mail offers
pretty sure the new version of FMJ is a different sku
That's what I figured, but with all the HD screwups, one can always hope eh? :)

If you get DirectTV, you'll need to upgrade to their HD service.
Same with Comcast/cable in general - I know comcast gave me 10 HD channels for 5 dollars more a month.
You'll need to run HDMI, component, DVI, or VGA cables from the cable/satellite box to the HDTV to view HD signals. Regular TV may, and probably will, look like crap. If your parents watch nothing but lifetime/history channel/local news, HD may not be necessary for them.
What type of movies do your parents watch? If Disney and Fox films, get them a Blu-Ray player. This plays Blu-Ray high def discs and also upconverts their DVDs (makes them look a little better). You'll need to hook this up via HDMI. If your parents prefer Universal and Paramount films, get them an HD-DVD player. It also will play standard DVDs, and HD-DVD players can be found this holiday in the ~$150 range, compared to Blu-Ray players going for ~$250 or more.
This should be a good starting point.

Through our cable company its like $5/month also for the cable channels. I also plan to get them a DVR. Not sure about an HD-DVD player though. My parents dont watch those program channels so they should be fine.

You'll get power cables but need to buy the component/HDMI seperate in most cases.

For $1500, you can get a pretty nice flatpanel tv, LCD or Plasma. :)
A few of things to consider:
1. Viewing distance
2. Lighting
3. Resolution
The rule for the best result for any HDtv is watch from approx 2 to 2.5 times the size of the tv away from it. So if you have a 42" tv (3.5') you'll get the best result watching from 7 to 8.75 feet away.
Next is lighting... if there is a TON of sunlight in the room you might want to shy away from plasma. Screen glare can be a real pain.
Lastly is resolution. Do you buy a 720p set? 768p? 1080i/p? If the tv is smaller than 60", 720p or 768p will do just fine.

No, you'll need to get an HD receiver from your cable company and you may have to subscribe to their HD service. And if cables don't come in the box, you can always get them cheap online or from a computer store.
The other option is, if it's available in your area, over the air (OTA) HD. Then all you need is an HD antenna. But you're limited to the local HD channels with that.
Since you're looking at LCDs, I'd recommend Sony, Sharp and Samsung... they tend to make the highest rated sets right now.

Welcome to the boards jackbauer :)
If you're looking for a deal on an HD DVD player in Canada, your best bet is to sign up at www.digitalhome.ca and keep an eye on the deals forums.
A few places were selling the A2 for as low as $188 CDN, but the stock has sold out for the most part. You might want to check out Visions to see what they have left and what they're selling it for (that's were I got my A2 for $188 in Calgary).
The A3s are supposed to be arriving at stores before long... if you can't find a decent deal on one before December then you should try your luck for a $199 WM HD DVD player. :)

How in the world does Toshiba think it's ever going to make any money from the HD-DVD format? I mean, seriously.
You may have heard by now that Toshiba has made pre-Black Friday arrangements with Wal-Mart to effectively dump its HD-A2 HD-DVD player starting this Friday (this weekend only) for just $98.87. You may also have heard that Best Buy has followed suit. Supplies are limited, of course, and the offer is apparently not valid in some parts of the country that have state anti-dumping laws.
Wikipedia defines dumping as "the act of a manufacturer in one country exporting a product to another country at a price which is either below the price it charges in its home market or is below its costs of production." Toshiba's move isn't really anti-competitive, because there are no U.S. manufacturers making HD-DVD players. But it's that "below its costs of production" part that applies in this case. The HD-A2 arrived in the States with an original MSRP of $499.99. Now, Toshiba is letting it go for just $99. There's no way the player cost less than $100 to manufacturer. Just. No. Way.
You might wonder: How can Toshiba possibly have enough HD-A2s left to sell at just $99 at large, nationwide retailers? Simple. It's because they didn't sell originally, so plenty of stores still have them sitting on shelves, gathering dust. Toshiba is eager to clear them all out at this point, and Wal-Mart and Best Buy are happy to help.
Clearly, the HD-DVD camp understands that low price is really the only card they have left to play in this format war. Porn hasn't won the war for them as predicted, nor have online bells and whistles, or combo discs/players. The obvious question would be: Why in the world would any other hardware manufacturer want to join Toshiba's foolhardy strategy of driving player prices down to next to nothing? It's no accident that not a single other major manufacturer has released a stand-alone HD-DVD player (and no, the Venturer doesn't count). Given how dramatically Toshiba has slashed prices on HD-DVD players over the last year, you have to wonder how long they can keep losing money.
Forget for a moment that the HD-A2 isn't capable of delivering full 1080p video - that doesn't matter. Why? Because anyone who is so price sensitive that they wait until a high-def player price hits $99 to buy one isn't likely to have an HDTV set yet. Being super bargain shoppers, they aren't likely to want to pay $30 for an HD-DVD movie either. I'd bet many of the people who jump on this sale will either be using them primarily as upconverting DVD players, or they're already diehard HD-DVD supporters and are buying them as second players. For those regular consumers who take the bait, I wonder how they'll feel when they realize they can't play those big Disney titles in the "blu" boxes due next week.
Speaking of which... a couple weeks ago, when Disney and Sony launched the successful strategy of counter-selling their Blu-ray software titles 2 for 1 the same week Paramount and DreamWorks released Transformers on HD-DVD, we got a few e-mails from HD-DVD fans telling us how lame that was. Is it any accident that Toshiba didn't wait for Black Friday to sell their $99 players, instead carefully planning the 3-day sale for the weekend before Disney and Pixar release Cars, Ratatouille and the Pixar Short Films Collection on Blu-ray? Not a chance. So Toshiba is slashing HD-DVD hardware prices to counteract the release of blockbuster Blu-ray software. What does that tell you about the viability of HD-DVD going into a fourth quarter that, by all accounts, is make or break for the format? (Especially with Warner Home Video now hinting that they're looking at the fourth quarter to "reevaluate" their dual format support)
Hey - there's no doubt that thousands of eager consumers will get a deal on cheap hardware this weekend. But it still isn't going to be the format war winner for HD-DVD that some would like to believe. On the contrary, it means that Toshiba is getting desperate with an all-or-nothing strategy... and is going even more deeply into the red with this format. Meanwhile, given the strength of their rhetoric this week, it's a safe bet that the Blu-ray camp will continue to press their advantage in the fourth quarter, and start turning up the heat on HD-DVD in the weeks and months ahead.
It boggles the mind to think that any reasonable person can still believe at this point that the HD-DVD format represents a viable long-term business. Even if Toshiba's strategy has the desired effect (which seems primarily to be garnering splashy headlines in the press), what do they ultimately win? A tie? The best case for HD-DVD, if Warner were to go HD exclusive, would be to effectively create a 50/50 split in terms of studio support. In other words, a total quagmire. High prices were the number one most surveyed consumers were staying away from high-def discs in the recent NPD survey, but the existence of two competing formats was close behind.
Keep in mind, contrary to the opinions of some online, we don't think HD-DVD is a bad format at all. If it were the only HD format around, we'd be all over it here at The Bits. But Toshiba is effectively paying studios to support it, and now they're practically giving the hardware and software away. Do you suppose we'll see free HD-DVD player offers in Cracker Jacks and cereal boxes next? $50 players? $25 players? 2 for 1 players?
Experienced fighter pilots will tell you that when you dive your aircraft at the deck, you very quickly run out of maneuvering room. It seems to me that the ground is coming up awfully fast for HD-DVD.
Back with more on Blu-ray Fest later this afternoon. Stay tuned...

Anyway, anyone have a link to the Wal-Mart page that lists ALL the $14.96 movies on sale tomorrow?

Not sure if you saw this - Sbrooks posted it on the last page:
So here is the complete list of $14.96 HD DVD's for this Friday:
Clerks 2
Lucky # S7even
Pulse
Failure to Launch
4 Brothers
Italian Job
Sleepy Hollow
Casino
12 Monkeys
Backdraft
Big Lebowski
Sea Biscuit
Alexander Revisted
Blood Diamond
Full Metal Jacket
The Last Samurai
Swordfish
Unforgiven
I went to WM tonight and some of the titles (the ones they had in stock on that list) were already $14.96.

Ok, so I just went to my local BB to see about a $99 A2.
Looked on the shelf... See nothing that's an A2. Everything's A3.
Man: "Can I help you?"
Me: "Hey, I assume you don't have anymore Toshiba A2's?"
Man: "Oh, uh... I'm just a sony rep."
That must have just sucked for you.
Found an actual Best Buy rep.
"Let me check the computer!"
One A2 in the store under "unavailable." He thinks it's a display model, if that number is accurate at all.
So anyways, he ventures about the store to look for an A2 on display. He looks everywhere. Nothing. He asks a manager. "Oh, Billy was looking around all day for it. Never found it. It's probably just an error in the computer."
I figured. Thanks anyways. He pulls up ALL of Georgia on the computer. All 0s. Whoever said this is a total bait and switch was absolutely correct. They don't have anymore A2s. Anyways, he said another store nearby has 1 as "unavailable" so that may be the store model as well.
As I'm about to head there, I decide to look about the store myself. Sure enough, not 20 seconds into my search, guess what I spot. All alone in a corner on a rack under a TV. A lone A2. I pull it out. It's in great condition except for a bunch of scrapes right in the center of the top. They're not bad that bad, and I can definitely touch them up with a black marker. Nobody will ever see them when it's in my cabinet.
Me: "I found it."
Salesman: "No way!"
Me: "Do you have the power cord and remote?"
He looks around. He hands me a power cord "that will work." And finds me a random DVD remote that says "Toshiba" on it. "It should work. It has play and eject."
I honestly didn't even care about the remote. I have a Harmony. I mean sure it would be nice to have. Especially if my Harmony doesn't give me all the buttons I need. But it's not a deal breaker at this point.
So he goes to ring me out. "Do you want the Best Buy replacement plan? It's $10 for 2 years." Ok, I NEVER buy the stupid plan. But this is some old ratty display model that's been out for a year. I actually kinda want it, and $10 isn't bad at all.
"Sure" I say.
Now is where it gets interesting.
Me: "Do they do anything about the price of it since it's used and is scratched up? Plus I'm not really getting the right remote."
Him: "No way will they do anything about the price. This is the rock bottom price. You can go online to BestBuy.com and click 'replacement parts' and order the right remote if you want it."
Um. I have to pay full price for a used machine and THEN go buy the remote I SHOULD be getting for free?!
Him: "But on the bright side, you still get a rebate for 5 free HD DVDS!"
Me: "But I don't have the UPC from the box."
Him: "Good point. Tell them that when you send it in. Maybe you'll get lucky!"
So I decided to purchase it anyways. At least I HAVE it. I can always return it tomorrow. So I spent about $117 with tax and the 2 year replacement plan for a used open box A2 with a remote that may or may not work for all the functions I need it to. AND I don't get the free 5 movies by mail.
I'll probably wake up early tomorrow and hit up Wal-Mart. For $10 less I can get a brand new one with the right remote and power cord AND 5 free HD movies! I figure if they don't have any when I get there, at least I have this to fall back on if I want to keep it.
So how screwed did I get?
dayday6
11-01-2007, 06:54 PM
I was the one that said it was a bait and switch.
Take that machine back, a new machine would be better plus you get 7 movies.

The replacement plans are good for some things, sometimes you are just giving them money.
I did not buy one for my HDTV or laptop because Sony already offers a 1 year warranty standard. I took my chances, the laptop no problems, the TV I had to get fixed after 9 months. I think Fry's offered plans on both for a couple hundred dollars, but I passed on it.
Do you buy replacement plans at TRU for your games?

if that is what you got out of the article then you truely missed the "point"
it is probably only a matter of time before Toshiba sends its employees out there to buy their own product over the counter at retail to manipulate the numbers even more
oh did I just say that... maybe they are doing it already... sure would be easier to do at $99 dollars than $399
It is probably only a matter of time before Sony sends its employees out there to buy their own product over the coutner at retail to HELP SELL the damn thing.
You came here bashing HD DVD lets keep it civil here. If you do not like HD DVD then move on. If you want to enjoy both then stay and chat with all the fine members here. Simple as that.
Bill Hunt Blast HD DVD every chance he gets. Why? Because according to him HD DVD should have died by now.

Would anyone be interested in writing reviews for Blu-Ray Movies? I'm building a site ( www.bluraymovieauctions.com ) and currently have all the movie auctions up (streamed in from ebay), but I'm wanting to add more to it in terms of content and can't do any type of reviews since I don't own Blu-Ray.
I'm also doing a site for HD-DVD and should have that up in the next week or so and will want to know if anyone would be interested in helping me on reviews for that one.
Not trying to spam my sites - just seeing if anyone would be interested.

GREAT SUCCESS!
I got there about 7:45. I saw about 3-4 people walking around with them. I asked them and they said Wal-Mart was letting you buy them now. I found the display and there were like 5 left. They were very strict about one per customer. They made you check out in the back right after you picked it up.
By the time I left, I saw another guy grabbing one, and after that there were 8 on the shelf. I wonder how many they have in the back to replenish them with.

The Walmarts in Canada just put up a 4x4 display that is half Bluray and half HD-DVD
One side has an HD tv playing BD the other side is playing HD
It's actually kind of neat
Before the display they had the titles all mixed up on an endcap

Just a question about the replacement plans.
I have heard 2 things and want to know which one is true.
If you buy a XBOX360 with the replacement plan for 4 years and it brakes 100 days later, then they give you a gift card to replace your 360.
Do you have to purchase ANOTHER replacement plan for the new 360 or does your old replacement plan cover it.
I have heard that you have to purchase a new one with each new replacement item. And I also have heard that you do not.
I would think that you wouldn't have to buy another one but I forgot where I heard it (employee or customer).

the way mine have worked is they've swapped it out for a new unit, not a gift card, every time it's happened to me this is how they've handled it (unless they don't have stock on hand)...then you can wait or they might give you a gift card.
Lately, Best Buy has been pro-rating the cost of a new plan if you want a fresh 2-years added to your new 360, but if you don't, the duration of the old plan will carry over to the new one, at least it should.
For example, if you bought the replacement plan for 2 years for a 360 at, say, 100 bucks...if your 360 breaks after 1 year, they'll give you the option to extend it back to 2 years for $50, half the price of the original since you're halfway through your replacement plan.
Hope that helps.

I ended up ordering 12 Monkeys and Backdraft through Best Buy in-store pickup for the $17.99 they have them for, then I'll at least get them to price-match 12 Monkeys in store since that one's on Wal-Mart's home page. I can live with paying 3 bucks more total.

My FUN day at Best Buy......
Called 1-888-BESTBUY and spoke to a dude name Jose, who assured me I would be able to price match Wal-Mart's $14.96 price for 12 Monkeys at the in-store level even if I make the purchase online through their Web site (I later find out this is so not true).
Purchased 12 Monkeys and Backdraft through BestBuy.com for $17.99 each, but applied 2 $5 reward certificates toward the total cost of the order. So the total was like $27 and change.
Went into Best Buy to pick up my order with the Wal-Mart ad in hand to get a few bucks back on 12 Monkeys. Well they looked at my order and told me they wouldn't price match because each movie was showing up as $12.99. Apparently there was no record of the reward certificates, they just deducted $5 from the price of each movie. So obviously there was nothing to price match since the Wal-Mart price was technically higher than the "price" I paid for my movie on BestBuy.com.
So I explained to the manager what happened and he said he couldn't do anything without seeing on a receipt that the certificates were applied and that the actual purchase price was $17.99. What a surprise.
Called back 1-888-BESTBUY to explain the situation, the lady and then the supervisor basically told me I was S.O.L., at least the supervisor gave me a corporate phone number if I wanted to complain more. I just may.
Anyway……
I told the manager what I was going to do was return the movies and then repurchase them with 12 Monkeys being discounted to the $14.96 price, so I save the 3 dollars but I don't get my reward zone credit back for about a month. Whatever, I'd rather save the money off the purchase price.
After ALL this nonsense of policy that Best Buy hides behind, the cashier and the manager were evidently confused, because they re-rang up the 2 movies for the price match, but they apparently thought their Web site was listing these for $12.99 so they pricematched both movies to that $12.99 price.
So I went in with the hope of getting one movie adjusted down to $14.96 and ended up getting both adjusted down to $12.99 (plus I still get my $10 in reward certificates back).
Unreal, wasted about 20 minutes of my time, but thanks to their complete incompetence at least I walked out with a deal.
Phew………..

I saw them in Boston a couple of years ago, it was a neat experience, we didn't have the greatest seats, however lots of paint and whatnot, if you are sitting in the front 2 rows you may get stuff on you, but I think they give you a bag to wear

First check your player to see if you need it... if you're at 2.5 already, you're good to go. :)
The easiest thing to do would be to connect it to the internet with an ethernet cable.
If you can't do that you can DL the update or call Toshiba for a copy (although it could take a while for Toshiba to send it.)

fyi, that's the Toshiba Canada site... but the firmware shouldn't be any different

I think the best deal besides the WM one is the new one that BB is offering.
A3 with 300 & Bourne Identity in the box, plus any 2 other movies instantly, plus the 5 send offs.
$199 for the A3 and 9 movies.
When is this deal running? And what is the diff between the A2 and A3?

I spoke too soon, the Wal-Mart near me has a new big HD display rack in the main aisle in front of the entertainment section with a 50/50 HD DVD/Blu-ray split. Truly awesome. And a small pamphlet on HD DVD which is pretty neat, explains the obvious stuff about it.
And now, I'm FORMAT NEUTRAL baby!!!! Picked up a PS3 with Spidey 3 packed in the box. There weren't any PS3's in the display case so I figured I was out of luck, asked a very helpful employee (which is cool for a change) if they had any anywhere else and he said he might have seen one in the back and told me to give him 10 minutes to try and find it. He came back and sure enough there it was in his hands. Oh **** yeah!!! Although I bought it more for a gaming machine I don't think I'll be buying any Blu-ray titles for now. So I'm format neutral but not really, and will support HD DVD only, for now... although there were a few horror titles I was pretty tempted to get.
Also picked up Face Off and Inside Man HD DVD's.
Inside Man got a kick ass review at HD Digest.

yes, there should be a place to go to print out a form.
You'll need the form filled out, your receipt and the barcode/UPC proof of purchase cut out from the box. Then be prepared to wait 3-4 months to get them.
Enjoy the player!
Thanks for the heads up bud. I printed out the form. Also, I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned it but I went by Wal Mart after work and they had all the HD DVD's for $14.96 but they had the new version of Full Metal Jacket instead of the old one. I'm definately glad I waited to buy it now. To think I almost bought it on Blu Ray the day they were all re-released. Thanks again.

Best Buy's latest move may be one of the best yet for "devil customers."
It was reported yesterday on DailyTech that Wal-Mart would have the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player on sale for $98.97 Friday morning. Best Buy followed suit by offering the HD-A2 online and in-store for $99.99.
As one might imagine, Best Buy stores were quickly depleted of stock and BestBuy.com was hammered with excess orders. Although some orders were able to get through, an overwhelming majority of customers who purchased HD-A2s from BestBuy.com received backorder notices.
Given that the HD-A2 is now discontinued, one would have expected that Best Buy would just cancel all of the orders and be done with it -- but you would be wrong. Best Buy instead is replacing all backordered HD-A2 players with the new third-generation HD-A3 which retails for $299.99.

Wouldn't it be funny that Toshiba is doing this because they are conceding to Blu-ray? DAMN!! That would suck...Joke aside I think that the HD/Blu side of DVD will be a niche market like laserdisc and consumers will still strongly support standard DVD. I'm still going to buy standard DVD as well as HD-DVD. And where does Criterion stand? All those movies now on another format? Sheesh. Good weekend deal though with BB.

Yeah - that was pretty cool, you should also check out Deep Blue ( I think that is what it is called ) from Discovery Channel - not to be confused with the IMAX one - they aired them on Discovery about 2 months ago and it was 4 episodes from the same people that did planet earth and it was just on the oceans - I'm hoping they do an HD release of it.
