My local Best Buy had The Aviator out for Blu-ray last night. I almost snagged it but the vanilla DD 5.1 soundtrack turned me away.

Just got back from checking out some HD-TV's at best buy. Was looking at 40" Samsung's and I have to say the 1080p is far more clearer then the 720p. I know its suppose to be but Ive heard people say you dont need 1080p for anything under 42". After seeing the difference I wouldnt even bother with a 40" 720p. Definetly gonna go with the 1080p for $1699 if I buy one.

A word of warning, make sure you can see that difference from the actually distance you'll be watching the tv from.
I agree the difference can be seen, but that viewing distance is pretty small.
That Sammy is a pretty nice tv... I'm looking at the 32" version currently for our bedroom.

Oh there was a big difference not matter where I was standing lol. I stood basically at all angles and distances where it would be viewed from. I was just stunned by how great that TV looked. Its $200 more then the 720p but well worth it for the better clarity imo. I think thats the one Im gonna go with.

Its an Xmas present for my parents... So wont be setup till then but Ill let everyone know how it looks once it is. Setting them up with a whole new experience when it comes to TV. HD-TV... Digital cable, HD, DVR. Will be something they never expected. They have wanted an HD-TV... mentioned it before...looked before but never pull the trigger buying one. So now they will have the easy decision of where in the living room to put it lol.

We want to take advantage of the dollar, and i want to get some stuff at better prices then up here. What I really want is an HD DVD (A3) player and reading the posts it sounds like they are $199 in the U.S. I was at my local best buy and they were selling for $459.99. You can get the A-30 right now at London drugs for $400. :)
Seattle is probably the best place to go... although a trip to Billings or Great Falls Montana might pay off as well.

The XBR4 and 5 are the same TV, the XBR5 has an 18 month warranty and the XBR4 has the standard 1 year, the XBR5 has an RS232 control input on the back (don't know what it is, you won't use it) and the color, XBR5 = Piano Black, XBR4 = Flat black and you can change bezels, also if you are near a Sony Style you get a $500 Gift Card on the XBR4 (put towards any accessories or in-home service plan), however not the XBR5 (they are in tight supply)

Cars review: 5 stars audio, 5 stars video.
'Cars' looks absolutely fantastic on Blu-ray. I have not a single nitpick -- every last pixel appears to be perfectly in place, and every aspect of the presentation is exemplary. Pixar also went for an extremely slick and shiny veneer for 'Cars,' so no intentional degradation (artificial film grain, etc.) has been added to the mix. The level of detail and sharpness to the image is extraordinary -- if you can find a single shot throughout 'Cars' that looks anything but fully three-dimensional, email me and we'll duke it out.
this image is simply flawless. Five stars all the way.

From Edmonton... I'd say no. The gas alone isn't worth it.
Odds are the A3 will go onsale at FS or BB before the holiday season... I'd watch both flyers very closely for the next 3 weeks or so. Or if you don't care about the free movies, just buy an A2 off of ebay.

Supposedly (and I can't really confirm this) is the sales one's were A2W's (a special SKU for WM).
Technically, there is no difference, although most stores with the A2 come with 3 free movies in the box.
I think that $98 special was for the weekend only.

Does this make any sense to you guys? Blu-ray.com just posted a review for Robocop. Here's what they say about video quality....
This Orion Picture production is presented in a 1:85:1 aspect ratio in 1080p. The picture quality is a mixed bag: some scenes look reasonably sharp, and others are marred by excessive film grain. Despite the amount of grain, this is the best I have seen Robocop look in all of its renditions: the 20th anniversary DVD, the Trilogy set issued by MGM, or the excellent laserdisc released by Criterion. The transfer itself is quite sharp. I was able to detect objects not previously seen on the DVD or laserdisc releases, like the detail in Robocop’s uniform and headgear. Colors are reasonably saturated, and skin tones ranged from natural, to a little on the pink-reddish side. Blood is vividly red, but occasionally colors became subdued. Some scenes appear too dark obstructing shadow detail, and occasionally blacks look a little muddy. The graininess previously mentioned is most objectionable in dark colors, and could appear more like digital noise than grain. In spite of its flaws, this is the definitive Robocop in terms of picture quality.
"This is the definitive Robocop in terms of picture quality" So why does it get a 1.5 http://www.blu-ray.com/images/rating/b3.jpg in their Video quality rating? Makes no sense to me....

Working at Best Buy last night I noticed we got in Close Encounters of the Third Kind last night to put out for next Tuesday. I was soooo tempted to buy that. Love that movie. :D
Must get Close Encounters. Blu ray discs are eating up my cash with thier HD god like PQ.:D

Why anyone would give Spider-Man less then a 4/5 in PQ is beyond me.
It may have a slight red push, in some scenes, and thats about it. It looks and sounds exactly as it did in the theater.
And in watching it again, it's like a fine aged bleu cheese.
And Spider-Man 3 is like a Kraft single.

Supposedly (and I can't really confirm this) is the sales one's were A2W's (a special SKU for WM).
Technically, there is no difference, although most stores with the A2 come with 3 free movies in the box.
I think that $98 special was for the weekend only.
No difference.

Never buy a home theater in a box unless you can insure that you can replace all of the components later. Often the DVD player will double as a receiver and have a proprietary connection to the sub. If the DVD player, receiver, or the sub break you are going to have to go out and spend at least $500 to replace all three of them even if just one of them is broken. The DVD/Receiver combo that is common in most HTIB systems is usually of low quality. You will spend more money in the long run and not benefit from it. Especially stay away from Panasonic systems. It usually is the same cost to go out and buy five quality speakers, a sub, receiver, and DVD player and if something does break on you, you can just replace that component.

Yeah, that price is $50.00. I tried to return Season 1 of Lost a couple years ago when my Mom bought it for me for Christmas. I didn't know where she got it and I didn't want her to know that I was returning it so I didn't have a receipt either but it was brand new, unopened and Best Buy wouldn't take it back because retail was more than $50.00, not even for store credit. OK, quick question:
I've got my PS3 running into my receiver via Optical. In game, I get Dolby Digital or DTS, same with Blu-Ray discs. But when I'm in the XMB or I'm watching a trailer from the PS Store, everything is coming through in standard stereo (and the trailers from the store all say AAC 128 KBPS). Is this correct, or is there a way to have it running in Dolby Digital or DTS all the time? And I don't mean crappy pro-logic or DTS Neo, either.

Yes, you can do this. It is how I have mine setup.
I have HDMI running from the PS3 to the Sony TV. I have the digital out port for sound running from the PS3 to the receiver. Works perfectly fine.

I would in general agree with this statement. If you buy something like this, you definitly want to be able to replace the pieces and parts as they break, if they do.
With the prices of electronics in general now, you can get a great DVD player that upscales for well under $100 which would be better than having one built in to an HTIB. Heck, you could just go a bit further and get and HD-DVD player which will upconvert and play HD-DVDs.
I bought a Kenwood HTIB from Sam's Club like.....geez, 7 years ago now. It is great and hasn't failed me yet. It is a 5.1 system and supports DTS and DD. I think it sounds fine in my basement and I'm happy with it. It has a ton of connections and I've got a Wii, PS3, Sony SXRD, Cable box, DVD player, and a CD changer all running through it.
It doesn't really have all the video connections to support all the devices, but I run those through the TV. It does support audio connections for all those devices.
If you really want a HTIB, I'd go with something like Onkyo or Denon.

The cable shouldn't matter at all. If you're watching a DVD that has a DTS track on it and your receiver supports DTS then you will receive the DTS audio regardless of whether you have a $2 Toslink optical cable from Monoprice or a $50 rip-off Monster Toslink optical cable.

This is correct.
Toslink or optical uses a red laser on fibreoptic... digital coax is just a regular coax cable, just with orange ends.
I've heard people claim that optical is better, but I've never noticed a huge difference. That being said however, optical is more prominent it seems that digital coax.

You can purchase an HDMI to DVI cable from www.monoprice.com (http://www.monoprice.com) for about $10 shipped.

Hey guys. I am probably getting the HDA3 from visions today. Problem is my TV does not have hdmi but does have dvi. Whats the best way to hook it up. Dvi,or component. Sorry if this is a stupid question, I do not know alot about this stuff. Thanks in advance.
The best way is that DVI input. You'll need an HDMI male/DVI female adapter. Should look like this:
http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/5786/c18440368ciu7.th.jpg (http://img216.imageshack.us/my.php?image=c18440368ciu7.jpg)
Then you'll need a regular DVI-D cable if you don't already have one. If you hook it up through component cables then you won't be able to upconvert your standard DVD's - they'll only be output at 480p. It will still play your HD-DVD's though.
I got the adapter at TigerDirect since they're warehouse is local to me - it was $9.99. I saw one at Wal-Mart on clearance for $10.00 too. Monoprice has it for around $3.00 with $2.00 shipping if you want to wait for it. DO NOT go to CC, BB, etc. for one - they're around $30.00 for the same thing - total ripoff, unless you want to be ripped off ;)

I've already discovered through your postings that you and I have different tastes in "good" movies. ;)
Hopefully they get both movies back on track fro those that want them. :)
well, admittedly I do go for a lot of crappy movies. It doesn't take much to entertain me.
But Ronin was pretty solid.

    I feel the exact opposite. Ronin is one of my favorite movies!
As much as I loved the "what if" factor that Red Dawn presented....Ronin is bad azz. It's what made me want to get a supercharged Audi when I was a teen :D

That's impossible - the week when 90,000 A2's were sold? 71% - 29% Blu-Ray?
why is it impossible
consumers bought SM3 on BR and spent their money on HD-DVD hardware and not software
.... and I doubt they will make up any ground next week against the 2 Disney/Pixar releases this week

Actually was just reading AVS - WalMart does not report to Nielson - that's why. I guarantee everyone that picked up a player grabbed an HD-DVD or two as well. I know I did. Granted, a lot of people that picked up an A2 might have picked it up as a second or third player but, still.
IceRat
11-09-2007, 12:54 PM
right so WM's SM3 numbers weren't reported as well in the tally
and I can guarantee you that everyone who picked up a player did not buy software
positive ways to look at the data if you support red
- not all hardware purchased made it in home... I'm sure a good number of units were purchased for resale on the secondary market
- a number of units were purchased as gifts for the holidays and software sales could/would follow later

I bought the WM A2 and then bought Transformers HD-DVD, my cousin bought the player and no movies. We also bought SM Trilogy, so that is 6 movies to 1.
There were 14 players at the store I went to a couple people bought 2 players, most bought 1 player and no movies.
IceRat

actually is would be 2:1 as a packaged box set only counts for 1 sku sale not 3 individual sales as in this case

I think a fair assumption would be that half of the 60,000 purchased at least 1 movie... that's an addition 30,000 HD DVD titles not included in any sort of ratio.
I think the HD DVD camp is just fine with the Nielson numbers this week. :)

interview with Sony CEO----
Just hitting the web via AP, dated 11/09/2007
NEW YORK (AP) - The head of Sony Corp., Howard Stringer, said Thursday that the Blu-ray disc format the company has developed as the successor to the DVD is in a 'stalemate' with the competing HD DVD format, chiefly backed by Toshiba Corp. and Microsoft Corp.
'It's a difficult fight,' said Stringer, speaking at the 92nd Street Y cultural center in Manhattan.
Toshiba has been selling its players for as low as $200 heading into the holiday season, while Blu-ray players cost more than twice as much. The HD DVD camp also scored a significant win in August, when it induced Paramount Pictures to drop most of its support for Blu-ray and put out high-definition movies exclusively on HD DVD.
'We were trying to win on the merits, which we were doing for a while, until Paramount changed sides,' Stringer said.
At the same time, he played down the importance of the battle, saying it was mostly a matter of prestige whose format wins out in the end.
'It doesn't mean as much as all that,' Stringer said. He added that he believed there was an opportunity of uniting the two camps under one format before he became CEO, and he wishes he could travel back in time to make that happen.
Stringer was more upbeat about the PlayStation (Nachrichten) 3, the game console that has so far had disappointing sales compared to the rival Nintendo Wii.
The CEO said the console is the best-selling console in Europe after a price cut three weeks ago. In the U.S., a recent price cut has doubled sales.
'We are coming back up again,' Stringer said. The company aims to sell 10 million PS3s by the end of its fiscal year in March. Nintendo has already sold 13.2 million Wiis.

wow, that's a huge difference last week.
Paramount really isn't a huge advantage without better catalog titles. Yes they gave HD DVD Transformers, but Old School and Anchorman won't cut it...most people have these on DVD and won't upgrade for comedies. I know I won't.

Oh yes! The new audio codecs are just incredible. As long as you have your system set up properly with the correct angles and have quality speakers and a sub you'll fall in love with it.

it happened to me during the first Disney BOGO....as it stands now (once I receive my lastest Amazon order) I'll have 9 more blu-ray than HD DVD. And I have had HD DVD for 4 months longer than my PS3.
The selection is still solid, but the sales just aren't there. There have been a few last week at Best Buy and CC, but meager selection of movies that early adopters probably already own. I guess they were trying to get the crowd that just nabbed all the $99 A2s.

Blu-Ray hit is in.
Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest
The Prestige
Reign of Fire (Blind Buy)
Apocalypto (Blind Buy)
Memento
The Fifth Element (Sort of Blind Buy, I've probably seen the whole movie, I just never pay attention)
Grand Total: 54.28. 9.05 per disc? Can't beat that, no sir.

Shrek is an absolute waste of time (and money).
Ocean's 13 is decent, enjoyable.
I'll be passing on everything this week unless I can find a brick and mortar store that has Close Encounters for under $35.

We watched Patriot Games tonight and I was stunned at the PQ. It's not perfect the whole way through, but most of the shots are vibrant, colorful and a few are the stronger 3-D moments I've seen on any disc yet.
A big winner, 4.25/5 for PQ.

I'd avoid it. That's just my opinion, I have no specific experience to back it up, but for a major purchase like a new television, I would stick to Panasonic, Sony, Sharp, Pioneer or Toshiba...maybe Samsung. Either that or get an extended warranty.
I know these Vizios, Westinghouse, etc... are major sellers, but I'd rather cut my budget somewhere else.

Probably not very similar prices.
Remember, you get what you pay for. If a Vizio TV is 1k less then a Sharp, Panasonic, Pioneer, etc... It's for good reason. It'll be fine if you don't mind having a slightly inferior product, but you get what you pay for.
If you want a deal, go to a store that does floor model markdowns/clearances. I got a 2.8k TV for 850, with 2 free DLP bulbs. It's an off brand (Hewlett-Packard), but it's decent enough, has above average HD picture and I'm happy with it. I'd trade it in a second for a 42 inch top tier plasma, though.

This is where I bought this TV from (refurbished) and I have no complaints. With rebates I had it delivered for under 1200 bucks. While it has a below average contrast ratio, I still believe the picture to be very good and certainly worth the bang for the buck. If you can afford a more expensive TV, then by all means do it. But, for the money I spent on a 1080p TV this size I couldn't be happier.

You get what you pay for is not always true. I have a Bravia, but would have no problem buying a Vizio. You pay more for the brand, that is why Sony's cost more. Vizio does not advertise, that is why there prices are lower. I have seen a few Vizios in person and they look nice. My Bravia I had to take it in for thousands of dead pixels in the upper left corner and before I got around to taking it in, it would not power on anymore.
You pay more for brand, not for product.
Don't alot of the manufactures use the same panels in the first place?

I bought it at Fry's and did not purchase the product replacement plan since Sony already has a 1 year warranty and the PRP was about 25% more. The dead pixels happened within the first 3-4 months, then it kept shutting off and turning back on, then it would stay off for along time, then it just never came back on and I took it in.

Aeon Flux
Babel

Charlie and the Choc Fac

Full Metal Jacket

U2
Black Rain

They do share panels, but the off brand ones get the lower grade panels, most times.
Obviously, a Vizio won't look bad - but a 5k plasma will, quite simply, look better. It also depends on the source, of course.
I personally love my 58" HP I paid 850 bucks for - the HD picture, as I said, is perfectly acceptable to me. But I've seen the Bravia's, and Samsungs, properly calibrated, and they are just such a noticable step up.

It was one of Peter Jackson's first movies and I think its great. Funny and actually intense at times. Overall, a good fun film to own. Don't know how the PQ is but the movie doesn't really lend itself to being a huge demo disc, but I'd imagine the quality is decent enough.

My opinion, all the red are good movies, blue I'd watch if there's nothing else on and black I haven't seen or they suck. I wouldn't get Full Metal Jacket though as that's probably the old one, not the one from the Kubrick collection. I chose Freedom Writers (in my offer FW replaces Italian Job), The Thing, Darkman, Frighteners and Charlie & CC. Frighteners kicks ass. Freedom Writers and Babel both sound boring as hell and I already owned Aeon Flux, other than that first category I thought the selection was pretty good.
A few pages back that PS3 I bought was returned the next day, forgot the 40GB is NOT backwards compatible.... sigh. Very important feature for me.
