Finally got my 40" Samsung 1080P all set up and calibrated (luckily I found a knowledgeable source who posted the settings for my exact model) and have re-watched several movies this weekend. Casino Royale, Kingdom of Heaven, Pirates 1 and 2, and Curse of the Golden Flower. All I can say is WOW! Yeah...on my previous LCD they looked great....but now they look absolutely incredible. Kingdom of Heaven is absolutely gorgeous. Even my video games look better now. A lot of the detail I lost in the other set pops off of the screen now. I am extremely satisfied with this set so far, especially for $1150......I cannot recommend this set enough (LN-T4066F)...especially if you can find a deal on it.

On the flip side....the high contrast ratio on the TV is making SD viewing almost impossible. You notice every single little flaw in the signal. I was going nuts watching today's broadcasts of NFL.....even NBC's Sunday Night one wasn't that great looking.

As long as your TV de-interlaces 1080P correctly you will see Zero difference in 1080I or 1080P.
Not sure on the 2nd part of your question. Sorry

Also how good is the quality when a DVD-R or DVD-RW is being used on an A3?
depends on how it was encoded it should look okay. are you talking about 50% compression from a real dual-layer dvd you ripped and encoded, or something off your handheld dvd-r video camera?

Here's a question that I don't know the answer to and would like some input on. I watched Call of Duty 4 on my brother in laws 360 this weekend. He was playing it on my old tube standard def 42" Phillips t.v. that I gave him. He was using s-video cables and the graphics looked better on that than they did on my 92'' 1080p set when I'm playing my PS3 version. The jaggies on the shadows and a lot of backgrounds are awful on the PS3 when I'm playing it.
My question is this...
Is there some settings on the PS3 that may be off?(I checked everything and it's set to hdmi and 1080p, but besides these settings)
Could it be because it's on a 92'' screen and more noticeable?
Could it be that the 360 version is just better looking?

i think it's just the screen. You notice everything more when it's larger.
All the reviews had the graphics between PS3/260 on COD4 about even, perhaps even favoring the PS3 a little more.

Watched Rescue Dawn last night on BR, it's a great movie and the audio and video were great. If you guys liked the movie you should check out the Documentary about the real guy, it's called "Little Dieter needs to Fly". After watching it you can see what a great actor Bale is, the real guy was pretty nuts and Bale does a spot on job playing him.

Upconvert DVD player does not play High Def movies - it plays standard DVD's and if you have an HDTV, it will upconver them to make them look better.
Not nearly as good as HD DVD's or Blu Ray movies - but it will look better than playing it on a non-up converting dvd player.

It's a common problem with many tv sets... LCDs in particular do not handle blacks very well.
I've found it's more common with tv movies rather than HDM movies, most likely due to the higher bit rate.

However, if the protection is stripped from the DVD or doesn't exist on the disk in the first place, then you can upconvert over component. :)

Ok last question before I make my decision on an HD-DVD player. Does it come with all the cables needed to use it or do I have to buy the HDMI cable for that as well?
Also the TV I bought has 2 HDMI outputs on it. I plan on buying an HD-TV for myself after xmas and have an xbox, dvr and hd-dvd player to hook up. If I get a tv with only 2 HDMI outputs is there no way of hooking the 3rd item up and getting HD?
civictyperboy
11-28-2007, 06:32 AM
Well I would hook the DVR or Xbox up through component cables, you could even hook the Xbox up through VGA and still get a decent signal, but your DVR isn't going to do anything better over HDMI than component so that is what I would do

As said above, I'd just do the cable box through component - HD still looks really good.
However, you can always get a switch for one of the ports: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011001&p_id=2786&seq=1&format=1#largeimage

Well, I busted out the manual and that appears to be correct. Boy do I feel dumb.
How is the picture quality difference from component to HDMI? I only have two HDMI jacks and 3 HDMI capable pieces of equipment. Right now I have the PS3 and DVR hooked up to HDMI and the DVD player via component. If I switch the DVD player and the DVR, I can apparently upconvert, which would be nice, though maybe since I didn't really notice, not that important. However, I watch a lot of cable TV and don't want it to look terrible, so I wonder how different it will look via component than HDMI.
Note that I don't really want to use my PS3 to play DVDs. I already have the DVD player and it works with my Harmony remote, so I'd rather use it and save some wear on my PS3.

To mirror what imagine said, just connect the DVR by component... odds are you won't see any difference.
Or go buy an HDMI switch... I believe on exists with an IR receiver so you don't have to get up and push buttons all the time.

Even though I've stayed away from Blu-ray they have a way better selection of horror titles which HD DVD is severely lacking, if a person doesn't want to buy imports anyway. My favorite genre and I believe I only have about 6 horror titles.

Imports are a way you can get movies that either aren't released in either format in North America or get releases that are exclusive to one format or another.
For example, in North America Terminator 2, all 3 Rambos, both Underworld films, The Prestige and Reign of Fire are all on Blu-ray only. But in Europe or Japan, these films can be found on HD DVD and often have a better transfer. :)
And because HD DVD is region free, you won't have any trouble playing them in any HD DVD player.

The high-definition format war tilted even more heavily in favor of Blu-ray Disc despite a rash of inexpensive HD DVD players sold through Wal-Mart and other discount retailers in recent weeks. Nielsen VideoScan data for the week shows 72.6% of high-definition discs purchased by consumers were Blu-ray and just 27.4% were HD DVD. Correct me if I am wrong but hasnt Blu Ray been winning every week for almost a year now?
Yet HD DVD is still here and doesn't look like it's going anywhere and let's be honest, some of those BOGO weeks bluray may have "won" by selling more discs - but, for example, the transformers week you and I know that the HD DVD camp made more money.
So yeah, every week they've sold more discs - but they haven't made more money every week.
As for the new players - I'd imagine a big chunk of them being sold now are going to be xmas gifts, so it makes sense that there isn't a huge upturn in sales within days of the players being sold. I think we'll see the difference in Q1 2008.
Regardless, my point in that response is that one week doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things - even if that week is the same week of black friday when a lot of HD DVD players were sold.
(For the record I could care less who wins now that I jumped on board with a PS3 - which I have to say that I've been very impressed with so far)

Yeah I jumped in with the PS3 awhile back. I bought one black friday weekend. Received 10 free BR disc and sold the PS3 for what I paid for it. Not bad deal.
I agree Bogo's are killing HD DVD. Its time they do the same thing. Everytime a blockbuster for BR comes out counter it with a Bogo.

Black Friday is when I jumped in, 10 free movies was too hard to pass up - I was going to buy another one and just sell the ps3 and keep the movies, but the guy at WM wouldn't sell me another one.
There are a number of Blu ray titles I want to pick up, but I'm waiting to see if they do a BOGO the week of bourne:)

The Fireplace disk has 4 different fires (didn't look very different IMO) and 3 different tracks (fire crackling, classical and Christmas). PQ is okay, probably a 3.5/5.
The Aquirium disk has 5 different tanks with 3 different views (full, closeup, editted) and 4 different tracks (bubbles, classical, soothing and one other)
I'm glad I only paid $10 each plus shipping... they're good, but certainly not worth the $25 regular price.

I really don't think anyone is going to win the HD Format war anytime soon. There is just too much support from the corporations that started HD-DVD for it to fail at the moment.
It does seem that there is a significant difference to the amount of media sold though. When your direct competitor beats you every week for a year, I think that is something that you need to worry about. Still, McDonalds beats all the other fast food places in sales every year, and there are plenty of other options.
I just wish that stuidos would drop their exclusive support. Let people make a true choice as to the media they want. I think in that case Blu-Ray would probably win, since I think the majority of HD-DVD sales come from titles that are exclusive to that format.
Anyone have a breakdown of titles like that? Top selling HD-DVDs and top selling HD media on both formats?

at this point even if they all go neutral you won't get a true representation of what the consumer wants because many have already chosen their side. If all the studios were neutral from day 1, then you would've known what people really wanted.

Disney FINALLY acknowledges Pirates 1 framing error and promises a disc exchange program.
For customers of the original, mis-framed Blu-ray edition of 'Pirates, Disney said it would also be offering a free disc exchange program. Although the studio told us that they've not yet set an exact date for release of the corrected discs, a studio rep promised that it will be "very soon."

I'm buried in my home setup- and maybe over-thinking myself:
HD cable box to HD TV- HDMI cable
HD cable box to receiver- optical cable
PS3 to HD TV- component cables
I also have a HDMI "splitter", which allows for another HDMI port, since my TV only has one. To push my PS3 through my receiver (which doesn't have HDMI), what are my options?

You can run an optical cable from the ps3 to your receiver, assuming you have an open port - if you don't you can buy a switch from monoprice.

Ok...so assuming you have a new TV which has an optical out, here is how I would hook up your stuff, optical in from cable box to tv then optical out from TV to receiver, component cables on cable box to tv, PS3 with hdmi to tv, use the tv to decode the signal and send the sound out to your receiver

By my limited knowledge, the PS3 component cables only carry video, and no audio, correct?

OK, on to the next question-
My TV is carried to the receiver via optical cable, giving me surround sound for my cable.

I would try component cables for your cable to your tv...then optical out from the tv to the receiver to see if that gives surround sound, your tv may be able to process that, but I don't know...easy solution, purchase an inexpensive receiver that has more than one optical in...

Speaking of......have any of you seen the latest options for purchases between 10/1/07 - 1/31/08
The Prestige/ Wild Hogs/ POTC: Black Pearl
Swordfish/ Superman:The Movie/ Full Metal Jacket
Stir of Echoes/ American Psycho/ The Devil's Rejects
The Patriot/ SWAT/ Ultraviolet
Chain Reaction/ Omen 666/ Flight of the Phoenix/ Species/ Hart's War/ The Last Waltz
This is the list I have to pick from. I have no idea what I'm going to pick. So far it looks like this:
Wild Hogs (I have the other two)
No idea (I don't have any of the three. I haven't seen FMJ.)
No idea (I don't have any of these and I don't think I've seen any. Psycho sounds appealing since Bale is in it.)
No idea (I have the Patriot. Not really interested in the other two.)
No idea (I've seen Species and the others sound like crap.)
Any suggestions?

my picks
group 1: The Prestige (no brainer here)
group 2: Full Metal Jacket (again no brainer, greatest movie director of all time, amazing movie, not the most recent edition but still trumps anything in any other category)
group 3: Stir Of Echos (decent movie, not interested in keeping but better than the other choices)
group 4: Ultraviolet (who cares, picked Ultraviolet because I think it was said to have the better PQ of anything else in the group... could toss this one in the garbage and not care)
group 5: The Last Waltz (no contest, The Band are one of the greatest music groups of our time and this is a fantastic concert directed by Marty)

This actually came at great timing for me. My wife wanted to get The Lake House, which is included in this. So instead of feeling like a complete tool for just buying the Lake House, at least I was able to throw in another title for myself.
Although that other title was Purple Rain (which rocks by the way), since I either have all the other ones or they're duds. Not sure what that does to negate the tool feeling, though. :)

Why do you have to change the settings on the PS3 for this movie?
PrimeBane
12-04-2007, 12:40 PM
It's just a printing error.
As for the movie settins, Disney has said it's no a 1080p/24 encode. You only need to worry about this if you have 1080p/24 turned on on your PS3. If you do, this is how you shut it off.
INFO FROM AVS:
for people having the problem: Turn 1089/24P Off from Auto(Default)
"
UPDATE:
I just got off the phone with Disney and i got mine to work and it sounds like it a simple fix to the problem, you have to go to your settings screen of your PS3, then go to BD/DVD settings, go to near the bottom where it says BD 1080p 24Mhz playback, click that and turn it off, then restart the system and it worked, somekind of PS3 problem with not playing a movie that doesnt support that.
its 1080p but its not 24fps, Disney said thats why it wouldnt play, there a disc reading problem when u try to play it at that setting"

Please note the Movie is in 1080P, it was a misprint with 1080I, if you are having problems with your PS3, turn 24P off, don't leave on auto.

Sure it does. You asked, "who recalls box art?" I gave you an example. Of course, a company should recall packages for incorrect specs. It is very frustrating when you buy something expecting one thing and something else entirely is in the package. Rarely do you get businesses to ever recall anything, no room to complain when they actually act with responsibility on their own volition. It is not as if a recall on DVDs costs anything. The manufacturing costs on DVDs themselves are extremely low. There is simply no reason to not recall something. The average consumer does not have the knowledge we have here and simply have to go by what is on the box, not reason that information should not be correct.

Michael Bay still hates HD-DVD
Per IGN:
After retracting his initial statement, Bay is back on his website's official forums with some more HD DVD bashing, except that this time, his focus is on Microsoft. Responding to a post about the reluctance to release a myriad of the director's films on Blu-ray, Bay stated:
"What you don't understand is corporate politics. Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads. That is the dirty secret no one is talking about. That is why Microsoft is handing out $100 million dollar checks to studios just embrace the HD DVD and not the leading, and superior Blu Ray. They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital downloads. Time will tell and you will see the truth."
Can someone tell me how that argeement works again? I know that all Paramount/Dreamworks fils are HD-DVD exclusive, but what about other combinations? Paramount/Warner or Dreamworks/Sony, or even just a Dreamworks movie by itself?
I saw a movie the other day, I think it ws Sweeny Todd that was Paramount/something other than Dreamworks and wondered how it was handled.

It's no secret that Michael "Transformers" Bay prefers his high definition optical discs in the Blu variety, but what we didn't know was how convinced the man is that the whole format war is nothing but a stalling tactic, with Microsoft pulling all the strings. Responding to a commenter angry over Paramount's decision to burn Optimus and friends onto HD DVD only, Bay claims to have the inside track on the "corporate politics" at play here, suggesting that "Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads." He goes on to claim that Redmond has only been financially backing HD DVD over "superior Blu-ray" to create "confusion in the market" until such time as high def digital downloading goes prime time. In other words, if you believe Bay, Microsoft is backing a known loser in order to prolong a war it doesn't want anyone to win. Pretty wild theory, if you ask us -- hey, this guy should make movies.

Other combinations are dealt with before the movie is released. So if it's a Warner/Paramount film, one will often get the distribution rights in the theatre and the other will get the distribution rights for home viewing.
As for Bay, I don't think the guy can form his own thoughts... most of what he spews seems to come from his "friends" and it's mostly beaten down arguements from message boards.
Bay and other directors need to sthu and enjoy their paycheck.

So I bought and watched Superbad twice last night...pretty funny. This one will be worth at least a few viewings....as the commentary with the actors in it is funnier then the movie itself. Some of the RL stories these guys tell are great. There's a part where one of the guys has his daughter in there with him...and he's giving greif to some of the others for cursing during the commentary....you can imagine where that goes....they end up saying every single foul mouthed word you can think of.

From the POTC3 description on BR.com
Those of you who are picking up 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' today on Blu-ray may notice that something isn't quite right on the specifications. If you look at the video encode for the main feature, the packaging says it is presented in 1080i. You shouldn't worry, though, as this is simply a misprint - the title is encoded at full 1080p24.
Why does it not work with that setting on the PS3 then?

that's exactly what it was.......Training Day is no longer eligible :(
So I ended up putting in two separate orders.....lol, call me a cheap azz. First order was for two $19.99 titles, Unforgiven and Goodfellas....then the second was for two $23.99 titles, The Departed and Relentless Enemies. If you throw all 4 together...they give you both the $19.99 titles for free.
Want The Dirty Dozen but I couldn't find another one to pair it with. I think I might be the only person in the world who didn't like Unforgiven.

wow, those are totally different than what they had before...wonder why they did that?
They may have removed the ones they sold out of and substituted new ones because the sale was going well.

any hear a "peep" about Gladiator (Ridley Scott) for BluRay? For some reason I thought this was coming out X-mas 07' :(

Acutally, it a Dreamworks SKG film thus Paramount currently owns the right. But it's still HD DVD exclusive. :)
It's been rumored that Gladiator could make an appearance in HD sometime in 2008.

Good to hear... but I can't say I'm a fan of the price. $29 for just a BD?
I think I'll wait for a sale for this one.

I wouldn't waste your time with this one
I bought the Bluray version
The picture quality is just as good as dvd
and the sound is only 2.0 Dolby
I thought I was getting an upgrade from the DVD when I bought it and really it is the same, if not worse

Dang that sucks. After watching Blazing Saddles BR i was hopful CV would be close in PQ.

It's still better than the DVD IMO, just don't expect the best HD PQ you've ever seen.
If you can get it for cheap or in a bogo, I'd say it's probably worth it if you watch it every Christmas.

looks like WalMart is having a special on the HD-A3 tomorrow morning...the player, 2 movies in the box, 5 more instantly and the 5 mail-in movies...not a bad deal for $300...

if there's 1 thing I've learned from this latest Amazon BOGO on blu-ray titles from reading the reviews is that Warner has churned out a ton of crappy transfers.

this is all I would need right
plug the PS3, Xbox 360, and HD Standalone player into that receiver via HDMI.....then run one single HDMI from that receiver to my TV...and voila'....done. And I would be able to play the TRUE HD tracks as well as the PCM ones right.
I would just need this....and then to go out and get a 7.1 speaker package

Yup, it should be all you'll need. :)
I'd LOVE that receiver, but it's out of my price range at this point. :(

hey everyone. I have a HDA2. I have watched transformers and 300 on it and honestly was not that impressed. Both were grainy in alot of areas. Its hooked up with hdmi to dvi as my tv does not have any hdmi outputs. I know its a 1080i player so should I get the A30? Is there that much of a difference. I guess I am just a little dissapointed as I was not blown away with the two movies. I am a huge "movie nerd" as my girlfriend would say so I want to get the best experience as I can. Sorry for the horribly written post!!

Are you watching them on a crappy TV?
300 will have a ton of grain in it....as it was meant to. Not sure about Transformers.......I don't own HD yet...but I will.

hmmm...I wondering about taking advantage of their sale right now....but I know that would cause a little rift at home with the holidays so close
"You spent how much on yourself....again?" Probably wouldn't go over to well. I hate when all the good sales happen at the same time.
I'll most likely have to wait till after the holidays....and hope that it is still on sale or will go on sale again. $750 ain't too bad......but $1000 is. It's just something about that extra 4th digit :D

I've been debating forever over buying Robocop on Blu-ray. Tonight I finally bit the bullet and bought it. I'm watching it right now and I'm really impressed! Yes there's a little noise/grain but it's not bad at all. It's definitely the best looking and sounding Robocop I've ever seen. I should have never waited this long to buy it. :D

Holy shiiiiiit!! The opening ED-209 sequence was awesome! I've never seen the Unrated version before and the guy ED-209 blows away at the beginning really gets messed up baaaad! They show extended footage of all kinds of bullets hitting him. Daaaamn!! :D

I believe it is the player, my cousin and I have the same model. I have not even hooked mine up yet and I have had it for a month. I own Transformers, Matrix Trology, & Heroes season 1. I let my cousin use Transformers and he said it doesn't look as good as when Blu-ray movies are on his TV. He was asking me if HD-DVD was inferior, I told him they are supposed to be the same. He also watched some other HD-DVD movies and said the difference between SD & HD-DVD was not as big a difference as SD to Blu-ray.
I think it is just a lower model with lower PQ, but I'm not complaining because I only paid $99.
