You shouldn't have any of those problems with Transformers. 300, yes, it'll be grainy, but you should still be able to see the amazing detail through the grain.

As for Transformers, I thought it was one of the cleanest, sharpest, most colorful transfers HD DVD has yet to offer.

this is all I would need right

plug the PS3, Xbox 360, and HD Standalone player into that receiver via HDMI.....then run one single HDMI from that receiver to my TV...and voila'....done. And I would be able to play the TRUE HD tracks as well as the PCM ones right.

I would just need this....and then to go out and get a 7.1 speaker package

Is it just the extra HDMI input you're looking for? Because you can save a hell of a lot of money getting the Sony 910 over the 805, and it has 3 inputs where the Onkyo 605 only has 2. This is probably the receiver I will be getting in the new year, I can't wait to have one cable going to my projector with a nice easy setup and taking advantage of HD sound.

Pretty sure it will play PCM and True HD but the player will need to do the decoding, not the receiver.

I believe it is the player, my cousin and I have the same model. I have not even hooked mine up yet and I have had it for a month. I own Transformers, Matrix Trology, & Heroes season 1. I let my cousin use Transformers and he said it doesn't look as good as when Blu-ray movies are on his TV. He was asking me if HD-DVD was inferior, I told him they are supposed to be the same. He also watched some other HD-DVD movies and said the difference between SD & HD-DVD was not as big a difference as SD to Blu-ray.

I think it is just a lower model with lower PQ, but I'm not complaining because I only paid $99.

LOL your friend is crazy (not really) but to say SD - HD DVD is not big but SD - BR was sounds fishy. Lower PQ??? The A2 puts out a beautiful HD picture as well as upscaled DVD's. No difference from the PS3 BR and the A2 PQ in HD. NONE.

I know one is 1080I and the other is 1080P but unless you have a 100' projector you just wont see it.

Transformers from SD to HD on the A2 is night and day.

So now that i have hd dvd and blu rays, i need to get me a sound system to go with everything.

I have a sony 50" 720p tv, and it has 2 hdmi inputs which I have the cable box hooked into and my ps3. and i also have a 360 with the hd dvd add on.

what kind of sound setup is best? i would say my price range would be like under $500..is it worth it to even get something under that much or r there good ones out there..any help would be appreciated.

not a bad idea...if they weren't so expensive I'd keep a spare so I won't have to wait next time it happens.

One decent thing about these replacement bulbs is they have a 6-month Toshiba warranty.

Have you tried hooking up the player to your tv via component - just throwing it out there as maybe there is an issue with the hdmi-to-dvi connection..... worth a shot.

I'm personally a huge fan of plasma. And I always opt for a larger size on a big purchase like a new TV. So all other things equal (since the brand is the same) for $50 difference I wouldn't even think about it - 50" plasma.

Receiver question....

Recently, I've had an issue where it sounds like the sound is dropping out of my receiver. It seems to only occur when I watch material that is not in DD or DTS.

Basically, the sound drops in volume for a bit, then seems to come back, but there is usually a static (crackling) noise that comes with it. Sort of like the signal isn't quite clear and is getting some interferance.

I've noticed it most often when watching PTI and the GTA4 trailer last night. Those are the only things I usually watch that aren't in HD. I haven't noticed it watching Heroes, Journeyman, or playing Blu-ray movies or PS3 games.

The cable box (PTI) is hooked up via the coaxial digital input (Looks like a regualr AV jack, but is usually orange colored.) and the PS3 is hooked up via optical input (The little one that I think uses light).

Any thoughts? Please tell me my receiver isn't dying.

My first instinct is to try new cables... but I fear it might be the part of the reciever dying on you. :(

Great, I just called a few Wally Worlds on their in-store secret deal on the 50" Vizio. Most of the stores around me didn't get the Vizio so they are offering a Sanyo 50" plazma for the same price. Just the bad thing is that there is only 1 set per store and I wont be able to go out shopping till later this afternoon. So finding a store that still has one at that time is gonna be like finding a needle in a haystack.

That's a known issue with the A2 - can't do Blacker-than-Black with the HDMI-DVI connection, I'm sure you're seeing plenty of crush and loss of detail in dark scenes - I know I am, watched Disturbia the other night and I literally have no idea what the hell happened at the end because I couldn't see a damn thing. It should look better over component.
Still, it shouldn't be grainy (well 300 should). Transformers was absolutely gorgeous, no grain or artifacts, it's a new, pristine transfer.

Alright here is some more info on the Vizio 50" secret in store special today. I come to find out it's the Vizio 50HDM model, not the 50HDTV model that has the built in HDTV tuner. So be careful guys, your not getting a real HDTV with the 50" Wal Mart is selling today only for $998.

I'm gonna see if I can get the Sanyo 50" plasma if it is a true HDTV and if they are still in stock. If not then it's just the Vizio 42" incher for me. :o

Built in tuner isn't a huge deal unless you plan on getting HD over the air... as long as you have an HD or Satellite box, you're still good. :)

this is what I read on it.

The Vizio's feature package is definitely its weakest point, but you can't expect the moon and the stars at this price. As we mentioned at the outset, it lacks both a built-in HDTV tuner and Digital Cable Ready capability, as well as a standard NTSC tuner. In other words, the P50HDM is a monitor, and as such it doesn't need to adhere to the FCC's tuner mandate. The omission of tuners means you'll need to use an external tuner box (cable, satellite, or over the air) to watch high-def and standard television.

I'll be getting HD TV signal from my cable provider. Should I still not worry about the HDTV tuner?

Yes it happens with both sources. Sadly, I don't really have spare cables to use to test.

The problem is that it is an inconsistant problem at the moment, so I'm going to continue to monitor it and see what happens. Pay more attention to sources and what I'm actually doing when it happens to see if I can isolate it more.

How organized are your cables - are they wrapping around each other at all? It's possible the cables could be causing interference - I'd try unhooking one completely and see if the other connection is still having problems and vice versa.

Probably isn't the problem but it's worth a shot to try it - when I hooked up my ps3 a couple weeks ago for some reason the cables caused interference with my DVR box and it wouldn't get a connection - I rerouted the ps3 cables and it fixed the problem.

Yeah, it's worth a shot - I was ready to pull my hair out after hooking up the PS3 and the DVR wouldn't work - then the mrs. comes in with her logic "it's got to be something with the PS3 since you just hooked that up" and of course, I unhooked it and it the DVR worked just fine.

Worst case is that'll be organized back there a little better:)

The long-awaited Profile 1.1 firmware upgrade for the PlayStation 3 should be available later this month. It was confirmed by Don Eklund, EVP of advanced technologies for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, at the High-Def 2.0 conference Dec. 4 in Los Angeles.

http://www.homemediamagazine.com/news/html/breaking_article.cfm?article_id=11685

"The rumor is that Warner is coming aboard soon," says Michael Burns, vice-chairman of studio Lionsgate (LGF), which makes its movies available on the Sony-backed format. "That will make it awfully tough for HD DVD to stay in this game." (Sony declined to comment, and Toshiba only would say it is "in regular contact with the studios.")

Alrighty, we have 2 HD TVs in the den here. The big one and a smaller by the computer on the other side of the room. Right now I'm using a 5-disc DVD player, running through the inputs in the back of the DVD-R/VCR combo, and out through the cable, which is split to both TVs.
We have 2 cable inputs in here, but the cable modem speed was suffering because we were splitting it to the small TV and the modem. So now I run cable TV from the other outlet to both TVs. Sounds stupid, and it is. And looks it. :D

Our images already look crappy on regular cable channels, and we don't have digital cable yet.

I guess none of that makes a difference...*LOL*
Main thing I want to do is split the signal from a soon-to-be had HD DVD player. Or, I guess I could do it from the PS3 since it upconverts DVDs also.
But I need to know if anyone here can suggest a relatively cheap method of splitting the video signal so at least the movies will be presented in good definition. The cable TV we can worry about later.

Does a place like monoprice.com have anything I can split the signal with, and what kind of splitter would I need?

follow up for some re: POTC

First up, the Pirates 3 Blu-ray... Disney now believes that the problem is related to viewing the disc in 1080p/24 mode via certain monitors (using the PS3 and some Samsung models). They're suggesting viewing in 1080i mode as a short-term solution, and say that firmware updates available shortly will correct the problem.

(Sorry for asking this question on another thread but for those who do not visit the 360 thread :o )

So for those that have their XBOX 360 (especially the Elite system) hooked up to HDTV, do you use the component hook-up (switched on HDTV) or do you use the direct HDTV hook-up? And is there a difference?

I'm using the component hook-up since it lets me plug in the red and white plugs from the 360 into my stereo

There hasn't been a BOGO every week or almost every week for Blu-ray. That's just absurd. Blu-ray has beaten HD DVD in sales every week this year and while a few weeks it was because of BOGO's for the most part it wasn't.

I will have to find the post on the avsforum to prove just how many Bogo deals BR has had. Its crazy.

A few weeks?? You are crazy. Been alot more then a few weeks.

Seems like everytime HD DVD has a big hit BR has a bogo..

If you dont think the Bogo's have really helped BR then time to take off the blinders. I dont mind it trust me but to say only a few weeks have helped its nuts.

Only reason I went blu was because of all the Bogo's

Amazon has had one this week, BB is having one next week, CC is having one week before xmas.. Thats just this month.

Frys also has been running the BOGO(1/2 price) on Blu-ray titles almost every week now since Transformers hit the streets.

They removed the long list of Bogo's because I guess it illegal to post them now on avsforum

All you have to do is a search and you will see beg from 1/1/07 all the Bogo deals BR has had and its not a few.

There are more threads talking about all the bogo's BR has.

Bogo's have helped maintain the 1.8:1 lead BR has had. No bogo's and this race is 1:1

I have to agree, the only reason blu-ray beat HD DVD during the Transformers, Shrek 3 weeks is because of BOGO. Whatever that means, who knows.

But Frys is like a permanent BOGO on blu-ray lately.

I wonder in a twisted way if that's actually hurting blu-ray, because I know there are VERY few exceptions now to where I'll pay full price for a blu-ray disc. I really want Castaway, but I know before the end of January someone will have it for $14-16...so why the hell would I pay $30-$35 now for a catalog title?

I think thats why new release's for BR are not doing as well as they should. I think most people now are waiting for Bogo's to happen then pick up the disc

Blu-Ray's company stance is "we offer cheap software pick us"

HD DVD's company stance is "we offer cheap hardware pick us"

For as much as we can fault Blu-Ray for running BOGO sales they are just there to combat HD DVD's $99-$200 hardware sales. Saying "the only reason blu-ray is winning the software sales is because of well....software sales". Is like saying "the only reason hd dvd is winning hardware sales is because of.....hardware sales".

As for the BOGO sales, Blu-ray has run a bunch of them but you can't honestly tell me those sales helped win the first 3/4's of 2007. I know exactly what BOGO's you are talking about, the best buy ones, and if anyone even bothered showing up for the first bogo then there was no need showing up for the next 10 because they offered the same exact titles every single damn time. House of Flying Daggers, Monster House, Into the Blue, Black Hawk Down, Click, etc I never even want to see those titles in an ad ever again. I could have bought them 50 times over by July of 2007. Blu-Ray's BOGO's right now are simply out there to combat HD DVD's software sales.

Are BOGO sales moving software? Yeah, but I mean how do you think 200,000 hd dvd standalones just moved a couple weeks back? It wasn't out of the kindness of customers hearts. Contrary to popular belief there was a bit of a price insentive there.

I mean look at this from an outside perspective for a minute. Blu-ray simply can't offer hardware sales....far too many CE companies backing them, for 1 to lower it's price is to essentially d*ck over 10 of your other good friends and allies. HD DVD on the other hand can do that so they do. Whats Blu-Rays answer? Sales on their software. If you wanna say BOGO sales is what skews the software sales then any person with a little time and effort can just as easily put together an argument that ridiculously amazing deals on hardware from the HD DVD side is whats winning the standalone front for them.

If I wanted to be more comical I could have just changed out the words "blu-ray" with "hd dvd" and "bogo" with "hardware sales" in your original post and I would have made a pretty valid argument.

U might have got sick of seeing those deals all the time but others jumped in on them. INCLUDING PEOPLE WHO DIDNT EVEN HAVE A BR MACHINE. And thats still true today. People are buying into the Bogo deals that dont even have a BR machine.

I agree 100% the reason HD DVD is leading in standalones is because of price. I have never said anything different. Thats a no brainer. We can all agree on that.

Problem is people can not see the fact that BOGO's REALLY help BR disc #'s. Plain and simple. BR fans do not want to accept that.

Bogo's or 50% off sales whatever you want to call them for 07 for BR. Found some in threads and some with the help of others remembering. Includes Amazon, fry's, target, CC. etc..

Dec 06 - Bogo Running
Jan - Bogo running
Feb - Bogo running
March - Bogo Running
April
May
June
July
Aug - Bogog running
Sept - Bogo Running
Oct - Bogo running
Nov - Bogo running
Dec - Bogo running multiple places, Amazon, CC and BB etc..

Cant find anything for a few months alot of threads were deleted on avsforums.
Most had a couple weeks in single month. So yeah its safe to say Bogo's have really helped BR..

I know is mostly the same titles over and over but Bogo's are helping BR.

Now damit HD DVD do some.

Do you think studios will re-release the titles that were exclusive on the winning format, or do you think they'll leave them be since they were already released in an HD format?

Anyone that says the cheap ones don't work are plants or clueless... granted you can run into problems with the cheaper cables and longer runs, but that doesn't apply to most people.

Digital signals either get there or they don't... there is no signal degradation.

No-one is complaining. My point is BR fanboys claim the only reason for HD DVD having a lead in standalones players is because of the $99 deal. Which HD DVD fans can agree to.

Problem is BR fanboys are blind to the bogo's and claim they dont inflat BR #'s

Also every BR fanboy claim the same thing. Look at the free titles that Toshiba is giving away with each player. But they overlook the 15 free titles that Walmart gave away with the PS3 black friday weekend.

In the upcoming year I want to upgrade yet downsize the tv - looking at Toshiba Regza's around 47" (LCD). I also want to pick up a new surround receiver that can output Dolby TrueHD and Digital Plus - looking at the Onkyo 605, of course that will require a speaker/sub upgrade - looking at Axiom and SVS(sub).

Looks like one of those RARE BR bogo deals again on amazon. They must be really scared to lose a week to HD DVD with Bourne coming out.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&plgroup=1&docId=1000174981&plpage=1

Knew the Sony stuff was coming... most stores should have that sale.

It's the ususal "Big HD DVD release is coming out so we better put on a bogo so the Nielsen numbers show we're still winning".

Honestly, I'm pretty bogo'd out now... the Fifth Element is about the only title there that I'd really want.

Couple of Q:

- What do you think of Phillips Plasma 42PF9431D/37 ?

- What is the difference between Broadcast Format Displayed and Broadcast Format Supported ?

Philips isn't bad for plasmas... probably a solid tier 2 unit. If you can get it for a good price, I'm sure you'll be happy with it... espeically if it has ambilight (backlighting).

Broadcast format diplayed = native resolution of the tv. This means whatever signal is put into the tv, if it does not match, it will either be upconverted or downconverting to the native resolution (providing the tv supports the resolution).

Broadcase format supported = what signals you can input into the tv that it will understand. This generally isn't a problem today, but tvs made as early as 2 years ago couldn't always accept a 1080p signal. Most new tvs today will accept anything from standard def to 1080p (although 1080p is usually only over HDMI).

Well, here's my setup.

Upstairs - RCA 52" HD Ready CRT TV, Toshiba D1 HD DVD player, Wii (temporarily until I can get a proper receiver for the basement, same with a PS3... I only want one connection going to the projector)

Downstairs - Optoma HD70 Projector, 100" Screen, Toshiba A20 HD DVD player, old ass Pioneer 5.1 HTIB, SEGA Dreamcast and Master System ;)

In order, here are my priorities...

Either a Sony 910 or Onkyo 605 Receiver, not sure which yet.
PS3 (I returned the one I bought for the Wii and a bunch of other crap for it)
Harmony Remotes (One up, one down)
New Speakers, most likely stay at 5.1 but we shall see.
Possibly a bigger screen.

While I'm at it some other crap I want to buy for the Basement Home Theatre...

Black velvet curtain
Black dye for the matching sofa's (right now they're greenish gold... blech)
And I need to raise up the rear seating more, like stadium seating.
Some little side tables I can attach to each side of both sofa's.
A few framed movie posters.
Maybe a couple Arcade machines, heheh. ;)

A person can take advantage of many BOGOs with many different studios and combinations to come.

Also, is the amazon BOGO only for 2 movies? (buy 1, other free) Or can I select like 2 movies, and then get 2 free? Or can I say order for example Goodfellas, and 300 and complete that order. Then go back later that day and get Full Metal Jacket and Casino Royale? Or would they not allow that?

You could buy 50 movies and get 50 for free if you wanted. No need to wait till the next day or do seperate transactions. For every 1 movie you buy you get 1 free. So it's up to you....you could put all 4 of those movies into your shopping cart then when you go to checkout of the 4 movies you got the 2 with the lowest prices will be deducted from the final.

Just remember you'll always get the cheapest movies free. So if you add four $25 movies to your cart and then four $18 movies to your cart you will get the $18 ones for free. If you don't mind seperate transactions you could shave a couple dollars off of your total and do a transaction with just the $25 movies then just a transaction with the $18 ones. That way you would be getting some $25 ones for free too.

I like Mr/Mrs Smith for what it is. Typical action flick, mixed in with a splash of humor. I liked the chemistry between Pitt/Jolie as well. Thought they worked well on screen.

Chuck and Larry is midly funny. It has its moments, but it isn't a laugh riot. Your typical comedy, though James and Sandler are both good in their roles.

i means interlaced, meaning only half the horizontal lines of the picture will be shown on screen at once, then the other half, and they go back and forth.

P means progressive, meaning all 1080 lines are shown at the same time.

you will undoubtedly get 100 different opinions as to whether you NEED progressive. My opinion is you don't even need to consider it unless your TV is larger than 50".

Also, there aren't that many 1080i native TVs...you'll most likely either get 1080p or 720p that can handle 1080i.

Wow....serves that TV station right for quoting a ****** like that employee. A half-decent reporter (obviously she is not) would've at least asked to speak to the head of the media department or the Magnolia room.

Unreal and scary, because the average consumer will believe every word of this.

Alright, just got back from trying to find "Led Zeppelin: The Song Remains the Same."

Went to a target and another best buy, and nothing. IMO the reason they postponed it (although some got out) is because Led Zeppelin is going to tour. I've been saying ever since they announced this "one time concert" that they would announce a tour after it.

RAIDEN6
12-11-2007, 10:44 PM
Come on....someone tell me they aren't going to tour...
UPDATE: This story just keeps getting stranger and stranger. Though the official word Warner was that this release has been postponed (and indeed it has been pulled down by several major retailers, including Amazon and DVD Empire), other retailers report receiving stock from their distributors and some lucky consumers have already got their hands on the discs. We've contacted Warner for clarification and will update this post with more details as they come in.

It looks like fans of Led Zeppelin's 'The Song Remains the Same' may have to wait a while longer for the concert classic to hit high-def disc.

Originally announced for a November 20th cross-format bow on Blu-ray, HD DVD and standard DVD, Warner subsequently pushed back the next-gen editions of 'The Song Remains the Same' to today, December 11. On Monday, however, the studio confirmed various retailer reports that the title has been delayed yet again -- this time without a new release date.

Warner didn't provide any official reason for the latest delay, but a studio rep tells High-Def Digest that the title has not been permanently cancelled, and is expected get a new release date sometime in the new

The FYE near me will buy back DVDs, they will give you cash or store credit, but I think it's 20% less if it's cash.

Also, be aware, FYE has a "quota" of how many DVDs they'll take back in a day, I found that out a few weeks ago. So I'd suggest getting there at least before noon or 1 p.m.

*EDIT*
Yeah, nevermind. Figured out what I need and why it didn't work. What a waste. If they're gonna call it a splitter and describe it as doing what I needed it to do, it ought to do it. Now I find out I'll need to spend about $70 instead to make it all work how I need it to.
[hr]

Okay, bought HDMI cables and a splitter from monoprice. I wanted to run the upconvert DVD player to both HDTVs we have in the den. Everything I read on the site, including the reviews, said this would work very easily.

And it does to a point. I can only run one TV at a time though. If I have both TVs on the HDMI input for the DVD player, the screen goes black and won't register the image. I can see the image on both TVs, just not one both at the same time. If one is off or not on the same input, I can see.
Does it need some kind of power boost or something to get the image visible on both?

Well, Rush Hour 3 will hit HD DVD sometime in 2008. New Line puts out the BD version first because it has region coding on it. Due to HD DVDs lack of region coding it will show up later.

As for War, I'd say the odds could be good for a an HD DVD import version. :)

BD to HD DVD ratio was 76:24 (or about a 3:1 ratio). Not surprising considering the 2 big d&d BD releases and none from HD DVD.

What is better 720p or 1080i?
Don't tell me there is no difference.
My TV is a 720p LCD.
The native resolution is 720p, but it also supports 1080i.
Should I force one resolution over the other one?

I know when I watch sports in HD 720p always looks better, but that could be Comcast related. There is more movement blur with 1080i.

Should I force my PS3 and HD-DVD player to 720p?

School me.

720p shows 720 lines of active resolution at a time

1080i shows 1080 lines of resolution at a time, but only 540 are active. (540 even change, while 540 odd don't, then 540 odd change while 540 even don't, repeat)

I know that already.:)
That doesn't tell me which one is better.
I know resolutions are listed 480i,480p,720p,1080i,1080p.
By reading that, 1080i should be a higher grade than 720p

Is there a situation where one is better than the other?

Considering your tvs native resolution is 720p, your tv is doing less work with the 720p signal than the 1080i signal. I'd stick with it. :)

I've found that somtimes 1080i looks better than 720p and vice versa... it really seems to depend on the media unfortunately.

The reason 1080i "could" look bad on your tv is that is might be doing a poor job of taking interlaced data and creating the progressive picture.

Really, your tv is tossing any extra data from the 1080i signal anyways as it can't be used.

My cable is through component.

PrimeBane
