What was Wal-Mart's price? And isn't that almost a week early?
You should watch this one tonight....and give us a review of the PQ/SQ. I want to buy it....but I'm worried about the quality seeing as how it is a dated film.
I will sample at least the Final Cut tonight...others are saying it looks amazing.
Wal-Mart's price was $31.87 (printed off their Web site - technically an online only price, but if you click into the item it doesn't say online only on that screen.) Best Buy was $34.99. Plus I had a $5 reward zone certificate.
I would've tried Target/Amazon's $27.95 price but I couldn't get the item to come up when I searched through Target. It's hit or miss with them.
Yes, they had it out there in Jensen on Tuesday - exactly a week before "street date". 3 copies of the blu-ray one only. I went back today and all 3 were still there, so there's 2 left. Others are seeing the same thing at Best Buys across the country. Weird.

FYI regarding that Best Buy BOGO....someone over at Avs posted a .pdf of the actual ad. I printed it out and got Circuit City to price match it today.
Got Bourne Ultimatum for myself and Shooter for a friend and we split the cost.
Also found Blade Runner blu-ray on the shelf at Best Buy and got them to price-match Wal-Mart's price.
When you price match do you just take the products up to the register and then show the ad? Did they ask any questions?

LOL. The HD DVD version of Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix is a COMBO disc...
So someone could mess with the HD DVD disc in their Blu-ray Disc machine and actually GET the movie to play!
Certainly it will be when they get to the DVD side... but it will most certainly play!
But will they realize it?
LOOK AT THIS BLU RAY MOVIE! I PAYED THOUSANDS FOR THIS TV AND BLUE RAY MACHHINE! ISNT THE QUALITY AMAZING? IT'S SO REAL!

Well my garbage CC didn't price match. Tried it tonight and they said they don't price match "special offers". I told her that it was ok and I would go to Best Buy with my money. I think this whole price match thing is kinda garbage. "Special Offers" could be taken as a sale price and they could deny you. They should call it.."we will match the competitors offer if you can prove to us that it is the "regular price" in which the competitor sells the exact same item. Ohh well I will wait until Sunday to go to BB and get the movies.

When you price match do you just take the products up to the register and then show the ad? Did they ask any questions?
Yes. At Best Buy here I can go up to any register. At Circuit City you have to go up to customer service. As long as you have something on paper, they tend to do it. My Circuit City is very good with price matching anything. When TRU had that deal a few weeks ago that if you buy Mario Galaxy you get a $25 gift card, Circuit City matched that for me too.
They usually don't ask me questions, since I know the drill and I have everything ready for them.
The key is to make sure they know right away the deal is for another brick and mortar store that exists in the immediate area. Target, Wal-Mart, FYE, etc...
I also find that if you go toward closing, the person running the customer service counter is tired as all hell and it's usually not a manager or higher up. If you sympathize and shmooze and give 'em a line like, "Tough day, huh?" they're more open to helping you out and matching whatever you put in front of them.

Got 2 Bourne Ultimatum's today at Best Buy. Going to price match with the b1g1 deal sometime next week.
I wasn't planning on getting Bourne because I thought it would be a one time watch movie. But with the great reviews and the deal next week at Best Buy, I just couldn't pass up.
Watched it earlier and I enjoyed it more this time than at the theatre. Dolby TrueHD was great. Music score from John Powell really stood out. Video quality was good but I've seen sharper transfers in Transformers and 300. I don't know if this is how it was originally shot.
Transformers is still the HD to beat.

It got a lot of heat when it came out because people were saying it was anti American. I enjoyed the movie, it was deeper than I thought. It wasn't really anti American but the way humans work when it comes to beliefs/revenge.
Universal site is reporting it doesn't have True HD BUT other sites are reporting it has it. If it has it I'm buying, if not, I'm not going to support it. This movie deserves lossless sound.

Don't know....but HD in general is such a niche. Maybe HD DVD is fine for now with being the niche of the niche?
JaylisJayP
12-14-2007, 08:12 PM
although it's easy to see why....HD DVD just doesn't have the sheer # of blockbusters to move the movies. I wouldn't even call Bourne Ultimatum a blockbuster in the sense that it would sell players.
Pirates
Fantastic 4s
Spidermans
Those movies sell in huge quantities.
All HD DVD has had to offer was Transformers. Now, if they had offered all 3 shrek flicks when Shrek 3 came out, they'd probably at least have won 1 week.

3:1 is pretty typical for a week where BD has the major releases and HD DVD has nothing other than an expensive box set.
Like Jaylis said, it's all just niche so far... hardly a reason for anyone on the red side to worry.

Yes the more the better unless you have a Receiver that has multiple HDMI ports you want as many HDMI ports as possible. Or buy a switcher.
But yes he is correct I would look for a TV with the most Ports possible.

Doesnt matter. BR sold 160,000 POTCAWE not good when DVD sold 8 Million copies. Both will be a niche market for some time to come
I would love to see all studios put movies on both formats. Just think if Transformers or POTC AWE was on both formats. Possible they would have sold 500K each not alot but alot better then 160,000 or 190,000
I do beleive BR will win this thing (someday) but HD DVD will still be around.

at some point, though, there are just too many players and people invested in it (HD DVD) to just drop it completely, you'd think. Although i admit I don't have any experience buying into a "losing" or "failed" format. (Betamax, Divx, I suppose laserdisc).

The only thing that matters is how many devices you are plugging in.
If you are only going to plug in 2 devices, that 2 inputs is enough.

niche market is a bit of an overstatement when mentioning HD video sales
the music industry has just as many potential customers and would be happy right now to have their top weekly seller doing 160,000 right now
If anything the home movie industry is spoiled by how home video ownership took off via dvd and despite the 8 mil number the industry is said to be slumping compared to past years. Some slump considering most of the blockbusters make their money back on theatrical release and much of the home video sales is just gravy.

If you take all of the bonus stuff out I would imagine so. HD/BD movie cases are small. The 5 movies come in different sized custom cases. It's kinda cool but you can't display them with the rest of your movie collection. The first 2 movies come in CD-sized cases.

Did Sony discontinue the 60 GB PS3? All I see are 40 and 80 GB systems.
Picked up the Harry Potter HD DVD set, it looked pretty cool in person so I went that route instead of buying them individually. Also picked up Shrek 3, another gift.

I hate High Def Digest's reviews. Almost all of their reviews at some point have "this is probably how the film is supposed to look, but I don't like it! Wahhh!"
What the ****? I don't want all of my films to look like Spider-Man 3. Grain Structures, overblown whites, crushed shadows, etc. are sometimes ON PURPOSE.
HDD needs to learn to rate their movies on the star scale based on how its SUPPOSED to look, rather than how they WANT IT to look.
The worst was 300. "I know this looks exactly as it does in theaters, but I don't like it so I won't give it 5 stars"
What the **** does that even mean?

I consider HDD's reviews by Peter Bracke to be the best on the net, period. There's really no other site that gives as well written reviews of HD DVD's and Blu-ray's better than HDD.

Yeas, The PS3 really does hold it down for entertainment value. The media center options work great if youre jacking HD content from the net. Stream it to ps3 or transfer video over to ps3 and watch from there.

Well Bogo's for BR seem to be all the time now. If Hd DVD has a big release coming you can pretty much assume a Bogo for BR.
HD DVD has one on amazon.
But Bogo's for HD DVD are rare. Hopefully they will have more now to compete with BR.

Posted December 17, 2007 by Josh
Many months after the Blu-ray release of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl', an error was discovered in the framing of some scenes. To rectify this issue, Disney is offering a replacement disc with the framing corrected. Simply call their customer service line at 1-800-723-4763 (US) and you will need to provide them with your contact information. Have your copy in front of you as well, if possible.
For Canadian customers, a phone line is being set up at 1-800-877-2843, but it may not be up yet.

Simply put, 'The Final Cut' looks stunning. Although again I didn't despise the earlier DVD editions, this restoration is nothing short of a revelation. I've seen the film at least 50 times over the years (seriously), and was absolutely floored by how many visual elements I'd simply never seen before. The detail, texture and depth of the image are spectacular. The original elements have clearly been rehabbed from the ground up, with a flawless print that has had all dirt and blemishes removed, (which is doubly impressive considering how many optical effects there are in the film). But lest purists fear that Warner has overdone it, I was thrilled to see that there is still some legitimate grain to the image, which retains a film-like and natural look entirely appropriate to the vintage of the film.

Nice... on all 4 HDM sets too:)
I'm not sure sure if I want to pick it up or not... my initial thoughts were that the film was pretty boring when I saw it years ago.

It looks and sounds so damn good I think I'm gonna pick up the Tony Bennet, Destiny's Child and John Legend concerts too. I'm a sucker for HD concerts and PCM 5.1. :D

No True HD for Kingdom. This is disapointing because the movie sounded pretty good at the theatre. DD+ might be good as well like Transformers but why not put the lossless track? It's about the same length as Bourne Supremacy. Way to be consistent Universal

Because I'm bored and 2007 is just about over, here's my list of red titles I'll be picking up so far in 2008 that have release dates.
No Country For OId Men
The Invasion
White Noise
Zodiac
Beowulf
Fletch
Land of the Dead (just saw it listed on HD Digest... woohoo!)
Twister
American Gangster
Not much yet but at least there's 3 horror titles, HD DVD needs more horror!

yep, I was a little underwhelmed with the audio till later in the movie but that may just be because my daughter was sleeping when I watched it and I fluctuated the audio. Not sure how it compares with the last version of the dvd.
I have seen this movie countless times but last night something stood out to me for the first time and bothered me...............
SPOILERS*****
HAL had the power to take over Frank's pod and have it "attack" him
why did he not exert the same control on Dave's pod shutting down the mechanics of it
then when Dave ejects himself from the pod into the spaceship why doesn't HAL shut down the ability of the ships exit bay door to close
Dave then I believe goes through 1 or possibly 2 (mechanical) sliding doors on the way to HAL's memory center.... again why doesn't HAL protect himself and shut down functions of the doors from opening
ps. now I have to decide if I should pick up the rest of the newly released Kubrick catalog (ACO, The Shining, EWS) to replace my dvds or wait till they re-release them once again in the future.

I got approval instantly a few months back when I wanted to buy a PS3, but I have had friends try it that have good (not great) credit and they were denied. I love it so far. I paid off the complete balances of my other cards and cut them up and now use the Sony card exclusively. I've already accumulated 10,000 Sony points ($100 value) in a couple months. I'm holding off on spending them on Blu Rays or on PS3 games in hopes I can get an AV receiver...or possibly a 7.1 speaker package in another couple months.

Children of Men - Decent flick, but I wouldn't watch it again. It is filmed very well.
Forbidden Planet - I don't know what this is exactly. It sounds familar though.
Aviator - I hated this movie and turned it off after like 30-45 minutes. Slow and boring.
Stardust - Haven't seen, but I think it got decent reviews in the theater.
