Well looks like BR won another week 61-39 in favor of Blue.
With the BB and Amazon Bogo's, 3 day & date release's against Just BR's Rush Hour 3 and still couldnt do anything I am in shock really. 61 - 39 the last 3 weeks.
Seem's to me there is something going on behind all the #'s..
But who knows. I think its time for Warner to end this soon..

That's pretty shocking, too....It might just be that a TON of people now own PS3s and are picking up the blu-rays.

yeah, as much as I went into the theater really wanting to like RE3, the movie just wasn't good. So no buy for me on that one....plus I already have the second one (as I'm guessing most fans of the movies do on blu-ray)...so I wasn't even considering the 3-pack.

I don't think any of these work on the PS3 because the PS3 is bluetooth.

HAHA!!! And yeah its not top tier but its still noticeably better then regular dvd. I really enjoyed it. The whole interspecies erotica was funny but I think the best part was the when the LOTR geek throws up because Randal made fun of the series. It was so unspecting it made me laugh really hard.

I dont think any remote works with the gaming systems at this point. You would have to use the PS3 remote.
Not even the Harmony remotes work with gaming systems right now. Hopefully thats something they will change because it would be nice to have the 1 remote work for everything.
I could be wrong as well but unless something new has come out my research shows they wont.

The harmony works out of the box with the Xbox 360. It can control the XMB and BD playback on a PS3 with a tiny USB dongle (http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-3-Blu-Wave-Remote/dp/B000R5H7KE/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1199466862&sr=8-1).

Question - is there a huge difference between the Transformers DVD and HD-DVD? I have the DVD and have played it upconverted on my HD DVD player, and it looks great. Just wondering if it's worth it to get the HD DVD.
FYI, I have a 40" Bravia (KDL40D3000 - 1080i) with an HDMI connection to my HD DVD player.

I think most work with the 360 because its infrared. Bluetooth is different, which is why most exclude the PS3.

You'll get varying opinions based on different people's setup and equipment. I would suggest renting the HD DVD once to tell for yourself.
However, if you just want other's opinions....here's mine. There's a significant difference. Even the lower-tiered HD DVDs and blu-ray are head and shoulders above the best upconverted DVDs.
For me, it's kinda like pitting Duke or another top college team (upconverted DVD) against...say....this year's Minnesota Timberwolves (say a lower tiered HD DVD).
Duke might be the best in its own league, but it'd still get crushed in the pros, even by the worst team.

if you bought an hd player and you're not using it for a top effects movie like transformer, what ARE You waiting to use it for?
even w/o reading a single review you should just imagine that transformers in hd would be pretty much the REASON to buy an hd player

Warner will continue to release on both HD DVD and Blu-ray until May 2008, but after that, it's BD for life for this studio. Oh, and while there's nothing official mentioning any sort of payoff, we're hearing that quite a sum was dished out to make this happen.

It is easy to say that.
When Paramount went HD-DVD exclusive the amount and names were dropped.
I'm not saying that money didn't change hands, but that statement is empty.
The day Paramount went exclusive $150 million was said, a guy from Microsoft(can't remember his name) said money was exchanged but none came from Microsoft.

Well all the BR's Bogo's have worked and made WB's come over to the Blu Side.
Remember BR DID NOT out sell HD DVD they just gave away more disk.
I think HD DVD made Blu Ray alot better. Without HD DVD, BR would probably not be where its at today.
Do you think they will continue with all the BR Bogo's now?? I sure hope so :)
Funny how the Blu Ray dorks think the WAR is over. What a joke its far from over.
They still have DVD to compete with.
imaginegrafix
01-04-2008, 03:38 PM
I hope the bogo's continue - I don't like the prices on Blu catalog titles w/out the sales, and I'll still buy hd dvd exclusive titles - picking up zoidac Tuesday - but hd dvd should be dead by the end of the year, but you never know..... maybe they have something up their sleeve yet.
As for competing with dvd - maybe 5 years from now they can get on that level, but it's not going to happen anytime soon.

With this news about WB, I am thinking about getting a Blu-Ray player. I dont know alot about the industry, I keep up with everything with this thread, and it seems like this will end the war. I think I know the answer but should I just go with the cheapest PS3 that I can find? I dont care about the backwards comp, and I have a 360 (like it better as a gaming machine). I think I have seen everyone here say it is the best player for the price, and every now and then i could play a great PS3 game.

grif....i'm as formal neutral as they come. 120 blu-ray, 108 HD DVD. But I have a difficult time believing that this move won't mean the end of the format war.
Not disagreeing with you, just asking why you believe the war is far from over?
Is Universal/Paramount/Dreamworks enough to keep an entire format going? They'd have to dramatically increase their release count.

DVD is still cheap and so are the players. HDM WILL NOT replace DVD.

Well, a little let down by Warner's decision. Would have been if they went HD too. I think it was great that ANY studio was supporting both formats, made things a lot better for the consumer DESPITE what Warner says. I liked having the choice too.
Oh well. And again, this isn't a deathblow for HD....not yet anyway. And both formats combined only BARELY outsold VHS (which IS a dead format pretty much) last year. Neither one is going to be victorious....only continue to be niche markets.

HDM might be the evolution of DVD, but it will never be the full-out replacement.
At some point digital media will take hold. I'll fight it since I love my tangible discs, but I do see it happening in the next 10 years.

I can't see how they didn't outsell VHS.
VHS is not even stocked at stores anymore, and studios do not release on VHS either.

There are plenty of HD format movies that sold a good amount, and they didn't have VHS to contend with.
Season sets, 300, Transformers, Spiderman plus others.

Call BS all you want, majority of the country doesn't have an HDTV to watch either format on. And while you don't see VHS is stores anymore, they aren't impossible to find....especially on line...and they're also dirt cheap...AND you also have to consider movies that haven't hit DVD yet, haven't hit either hi-def format yet and are only available on VHS.
So yea, don't actually look at the site...but call BS anyway just cuz you feel that's what's right. hidefdigest is one of the biggest/most reliable sources on both formats out there. the reviews can come a little slow, but as far as news, I usually get my info from them before I even see it on any other site.

I have a large catalog of movies in the dvd format and not once during the BOGO promotions was I persuaded to need to/want to pick up any 2 movies offered
BOGOs will continue to exist to sway the market to mass adoption
more importantly once one standard is settled on we will start to see "quality" catalog being released by the studios and together just like with dvd, software prices will be driven down

I would rather watch the rednecks on "Shop at Home" much more entertaining.

It wasn't too long ago that I paid $25 + for new release SD DVD. LOTR, Matrix, Star Wars, etc. Big deal, BR and HD are 5 or 6 bucks more than that. If DVD hadn't been gouging the consumer, we'd all have huge libraries. I see LOTR trilogy for less than I paid for ONE lotr dvd, now that's insane.

I really think the BR case was better looking than HD, and the blu-ray name sounded better and was less confusing for alot of people. I know it sounds stupid, but I am sure people bought HD-dvds thinking they would play in their dvd player, and to make matters worse for the BURGUNDY, they had dual format HD/DVDs. Man, I know some people must have been like ????.

$5 or $6 more?? What B&M store are you buying movies at?
Take away the Bogo's and walk into BB or CC and their Disc are alot more then $5 or $6 more over SD DVD's. Lets be real. Some as high as $10.00 more.
Your next argument will be "Online they are cheaper"
Well online SD DVD's are less expensive as well so it doesnt hold water.
HDM Disc might be $19.95 -$27.95 online but the same SD DVD will be
Just as an example. Live free die harder $27.95 online for BR $15.49 for SD DVD alot more then $5 - $6.
HDM disc are way to high now PERIOD! Average person WILL NOT spend the extra $10.00 per movie because they think their $90 1080P upscale DVD player looks amazing on their HD TV hooked up via composite cables.

Warner: New Line, HBO Not Covered By Blu-ray Announcement
Though it's widely expected that Warner Bros. subsidiaries New Line and HBO will follow Warner Home Entertainment to Blu-ray exclusivity, for the moment they remain format-agnostic.
That's according to Warner Home Entertainment President Kevin Tsujihara, who said that the studio's announcement that it would drop HD DVD support does not extend to titles released by New Line, HBO or the BBC (which Warner distributes here in the US).

I just received an email from the HD DVD Promotion Group stating that the CES 2008 HD DVD press event has been canceled. The recent Blu-ray exclusive announcement from Warner is cited as the reason for the event being canceled. You can find the full text of the notice below.
Notice of CES Press Conference Cancellation by North American HD DVD Promotion Group
“Based on the timing of the Warner Home Video announcement today, we have decided to postpone our CES 2008 press conference scheduled for Sunday, January 6th at 8:30 p.m. in the Wynn Hotel. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
We are currently discussing the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluating next steps. We believe the consumer continues to benefit from HD DVD’s commitment to quality and affordability – a bar that is critical for the mainstream success of any format.
We’ll continue to keep you updated on new developments around HD DVD.”

I was an HD-DVD supporter from June 2006.
In November 2007 I finally picked up a PS3 and became purple just so I wouldn't miss out on so many titles. Then about a week later the "Warner Rumor" began. After that I decided I would be buying titles in Blu Ray when it came to a choice of which format...and thanks to Amazon's BOGO I quickly built up a nice library.
As of this announcment, I will not be buying another HD-DVD. If I want to watch Bourne Ultimatum, I will rent it in HD or wait for the eventual Blu release...same goes with every other title.
I am not upset by this announcment what so ever...in fact I somehow feel a little more secure knowing that by purchasing Blu titles now I will be investing in the "safe" format. As for my 40+ HD-DVDs...Ill definetly keep them along with my player. Chances are when they are released on Blu they will look a lot like the HD versions.

I was Blu from the beginning because I had a PS3. I wouldn't have gone either way with a stand alone. I got my HD-DVD player for $98 at the super secret Friday Walmart sale. I was going to get one to hold me off until I had the money for a PS3, but I guess it is pointless now.
Well it's definately pointless to get a HD DVD player now, as sad as it is (and believe me I have no idea why people are going to do this....but they will) people are going to start selling off their HD DVD stuff in bundles and for cheap as hell.
I came into the Blu-Ray thing back in October of 06 and at that time I knew for a fact that my format could lose but the whole idea was as long as I had a player (soon to be released PS3) then who cared who won or lost. But you've got people now who see their format of choice possibly losing and they are starting up firesales on all of their stuff. If you truly did want a HD DVD player I certainly wouldn't buy one at retail anymore, the prices are going to start bottoming out.
I just don't get it....when I went into a store and bought Superbad I bought the movie because I wanted to watch it as many times as I felt like over the course of the next 10 years....whether or not my format of choice won or lost didn't mean anything, I just wanted to see the movie in high def. So people selling their collections, ehh I don't get it. The only thing I would sell if anything if I were on the HD DVD side of the fence was warner releases...I'd trade those off.

I was pretty sure that Blu-ray would win out. It is just better technology. The Blu-ray was able to handle more disc space, since HD-DVDs are just regular dvds with more compression on them. It was just going to take some time for the Technology to become cheap enough to actually sell players for a reasonable price, which probably still hasnt happened yet.

Thats the main reason I'd do a trade-off. Me personally I'm pretty anal about stupid stuff like that. I wouldn't want 5 red cases of harry potter and then 2 blue ones. It's one of the main reasons even though I got all 5 harry potter movies I didn't get the boxed set. I didn't want that giant box looking like an eyesore on my shelf.
Same with something like Batman Begins...if I had it in red and know I know the sequel would be blue thats another I'd switch out.

I copmletely agree - I own both but don't plan on selling any hd dvd movies that I bought to keep for the long haul, it's still HD and the blu versions aren't any better.
I'm all for people selling their collections though - should be able to get some nice deals:D - It goes back to what I said a few posts above though, it seems like a lot of people are more in love w/ "their" format rather than the movies in HD.

The more I think about it, the more pissed I am about Warner. Whether they went to HD or Blu, the way they went about it is totally unprofessional. Not only did they not say a thing to the HD camp before hand (they found out just like the public), they pull it out of nowhere just a day or so before CES, thus completely cacelling Toshiba's press conference, and Toshiba has already mentioned that they had had some contractual agreements with Warner that this move might be infringing on.
Warner's Prez was a bit TOO quick to deny a pay off, but...it's a HUGE turn around from just a month or so ago firmly stating they were committed to bringing people both formats. And it's not like they'd admit it. Sorry, but to randomly change stance from just over a month ago, and to do so without warning on the eve of CES....screams strategic pay off.
Again, I don't care which side they went with...I care about how they handled it, and it's not very professional.

Probably because if showcased a lot of WB titles. That's not squirming....it's keeping themselves from squirming. What were they going to do, clear their throats every couple minutes to say "ignore this slide...that title is no longer coming" or just have the audience stare at the wall for a good chunk of the original run time?

Well we all know money changed hands, the cool thing to do is to deny it. But we are talking about a 20 billion dollar industry so if money doesn't change hands then theres something horribly wrong with how they run their business. Same thing happened with Paramount, I don't care if they got money, you just gotta admit that somewhere down the line a dollar or 2 may have entered your palm.
The thing with Warner is the HD market is so fragile and wide open that you can't "give warning". You "give warning" to Toshiba and 30 seconds later Avsforum.com has official word from an industry insider that Warner is going exclusive. And if this word gets out before you are about to release Oceans 13 or Harry Potter on both formats then you've completely screwed the pooch. No one besides the diehards of the format will buy the version that they know you are going to ditch out on.
I honestly don't think theres a "right way" to drop format neutrality. No matter how you do it, no matter when you do it, no matter where you do it it's going absolutely suck and cause a giant stir.
If Warner drops neutrality during CES then their 1 hour long presentation turns into 12 hours when they constantly have to listen to crying and field 1 million different questions. Not to mention deal with telling Toshiba DURING the show that "oh yeah we aren't showing up to that thing anymore that starts in 2 hours".
If Warner drops neutrality after CES then in my opinion it's even worse because then you are up on stage shaking hands with Toshiba telling them how much you love them knowing very well your dagger is planted squarely in their back the minute you leave Las Vegas.
If anything I think before CES is probably the way to go...granted Toshiba is definately hurting right now and not knowing what the hell hit them they still have a week (if they hold of to the end) to get together with their allies, come up with a gameplan, and present it for the crowds.
To be honest though like I said theres just no way to do this type of thing gracefully. And you and I both know that if you were doing any sort of research or on the internet at all in the last 3 months regardless of how much Warner denied EVERYONE knew they were going exclusive around CES it was just a matter of with who. It's just like Xbox360 denying a HDMI 360, deny deny deny, then 2 months later I'm waiting in line to buy one. Or how about Mcfarlane saying their won't be a chase of this certain figure, deny, deny, deny...theres one on Ebay. Thats just how things go.

What is the strategy now?
Will you ditch HD-DVD?
Will you put a moratorium on HD-DVD and keep what you got?
Will you buy up peoples fire sales?

I'll still buy hd dvd - picking up zodiac on Tues. - if it's dual format I'll buy blu though, but otherwise I have no problem buying hd dvd, I'm in it for the movies. It looks very bleak, but they aren't dead yet. You never know what could happen.
I already bought a few movies off of ebay in peoples fire sales and expect to buy a lot more over the next few months - fire sales equal cheap hd movies for me.

Considering I was going to go neutral this year anyway it doesn't sting too bad, but I can't help but feel like the bad guys just kicked the good guys in the junk, oh well.
0 chance I'll sell off any HD DVD's, they're in HD and I don't need to replace HD with a different HD.
Pretty sad most people will panic and sell their HD DVD collections. Depending on how long HD DVD can hold up there's some more releases I'll still get.

Obviously the person selling the movies at $7 and some change was already scared :)
I keep going back to what Chugga said, I'm buying these movies to watch in HD for a long time - even if the format is dead by the end of the year my hd dvd player will still play hd dvd's, and they'll still look damn good!

Well WB was paid $500 million to switch.. Wonder what Fox was paid.

I know WB denies it but lets be real.
I wonder how much Disney is getting paid...

Anyway, here is what I know. Warner and Toshiba had a deal last week with another "unnamed studio" (if you have read my posts, you should be able to figure it out and they would be considered a "major")...anyway, at the last minute, the unnamed studio got cold feet and walked out on the deal. Warner was NOT going to go to HD DVD alone because it would cause more of a stalemate and Toshiba needed to get another "player" in the group. When this other studio left the table, Warner had one choice to end the format war and that was to go to Blu-ray.
I've known about these negotiations for a while and there are others on here that can confirm because I confided in them in PM's on the condition that they kept the information tightly held. I knew a decision was going to be made today for the past couple of weeks and told people to expect a decision on the 4th. I didn't know which way Warner would go until just before the press release hit the wires...I was contacted by two sources within 1 minute of each other and I thank those sources for providing me information. I had sent an email to both my editor at Home Theater as well as Home Theater Spot informing them of Warner's decision just before Reuters reported the news.
I don't know what Toshiba will do, but for all intent and purpose, the format war is over as far as I am concerned.

I don't think it was ever really a tight race from the get-go. When the Blu Ray format had Sony and Disney solely behind them - it was over. Especially the amount of money involved with those 2 entities. I've been Blu Ray all the way and I've only had 2 complaints - Transformers and Batman Begins missing in my collection. Now I'm pretty sure I'll have BB by summer, and hopefully Transformers soon to follow. Now if I could only get my damn Unrated "Live Free or Die Hard BD"................

PS3 games suck IMO. Ninja Gaiden is about the only thing I play. I bought hevenly sword but that sucks.

The Wii is full of trash games and this is widely known.
The Nintendo firts party games are good, but not spectacular.
There is absolutely no quality control on that system and developers are counting on uneducated soccer moms to buy their product.
Chicken Shoot and all the other broken games that have an average rating under 3.
If you like the games it offers that is good for you it is your money.
That system doesn't offer anything on the level of Uncharted, Warhawk, Folklore or The Orange Box.

Quick question about the 360 and the HD-DVD player for it.
I have an orginal premium xbox. It doesnt have HDMI. Its has Component cables and on it is a little switch that has TV and HD on it.
My Question is will the HD-DVD quality be good with Component and the HD-DVD player going through an original Xbox 360? Is there a need for the elite?
All info appreciated :)

Shame about Warners choice. I actually thought that both formats would sustain in the market like how certain video games are available for all the systems. I didn't invest too much in HD I only have 12 titles most I purchsed through BOGO's and discounts and I didn't pay alot for my player. My HD-A3 was only $199. But I won't go out today and buy a Blu player I'll wait on the sidelines and enjoy what I have In HD. And I still buy standard DVD like most of you. The past 2 months through online coupons and offers I've purchased 20 standard DVD's.Afterall these are movies we should enjoy them in any format thats what makes the experience special.

Hey everyone, I just watched Queen Rock Montreal (on *gasp* HD DVD).
If you're a fan of the band this is a must own. The picture quality is hazy on long shots and crowd shots, but most shots of the band and close-ups are a revelation for a film concert shot in 1981.
Sound is very powerful, too. I usually listen to my movies with the Onkyo receiver volume set at 48-50. The Queen concert was full and LOUD at 27.
