The thing that kinda sucks is that 90% of Universal HD DVD movies in the year ahead supposedly will be combos, which means 5-10 bucks more expensive.
Hell, they're already pretty pricey for one movie, I can't ever see myself spending 35-40 bucks on these things.
yeah I posted that early that 90% will be combo's which really suck but for movies like Jaws and Jurassic park I dont care if they are combo's or not. They are must buys
I think they have to come down in price for the combo's or they will be in trouble.
I want Ant Bully HD-DVD but not for $30 for the combo disk.

For anyone that might be looking for a standalone HD-DVD player you might want to consider this one.

$389.99
And it doubles and a very good upconverting DVD player.

Well I signed up for Blockbuster online total access today. We'll see how good they are at getting HD DVDs and BLU Rays out...but I'm pretty stoked about the service. Return the DVDs from the mail to any blockbuster and get a new one free on the spot...could be a Netflix killer.

I was just over at thedigitalbits website and they had an article about the first scans of next-gen movie sales and Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD by over a 2 to 1 margin. In the first sample HD-DVD was only selling 47 discs for every 100 Blu-Ray's and in the 2nd report only 38 for every 100 Blu-Ray's.
Looks like Blu-Ray is out in front right now if one format were to die off...

The first official retail tracking data from Nielsen VideoScan seems to show Blu-ray Disc outselling HD-DVD in unit software sales by a more than 2 to 1 margin, and the gap is widening. According to data reported in Home Media Retailing (http://www.homemediamagazine.com/) (you'll find it on page one of the digital edition available on their website) for the week ending 1/7/07, Year-to-Date tracking indicated that for every 47.14 HD-DVDs sold there were 100 Blu-ray Disc titles sold. Just a week later, ending 1/14/07, the same YTD tracking indicated just 38.36 HD-DVDs sold for every 100 Blu-ray Discs sold. What's more, tracking by Nielsen VideoScan since the inception of both formats appears to indicate that Blu-ray Disc is quickly erasing the sales lead HD-DVD enjoyed as a result of launching months earlier in 2006. On 1/7, HD-DVD's lead was 100 discs for every 85.05 Blu-ray Discs sold, while just a week later on 1/14, that lead had been reduced to 100 HD-DVDs for every 92.40 Blu-ray Discs sold.

No surprise....HD DVD has been massively lagging in new releases, and in this kind of a format war, you can't take any time off.
Second is the combo thing, it's killing HD DVD. It's the only reason I'll be buying The Departed on Blu-Ray as opposed to HD DVD.
I used to pull for HD DVD because of the superior quality, but since Blu-Ray got it's act together in terms of quality, I personally don't care who wins the format war. I'll get the movies either way.
PrimeBane
01-31-2007, 10:27 PM
Like Jalis said, there's WAY more out on BD right now. People that support new formats want their content and they want it NOW.
But if you compare sales between the same titles (The Departed and Babel for example) on both formats, you'll find they're virtually identical.
But the HD-DVD folks do need to get their act together and get some good new disks on the shelves instead of just announcing dateless titles.
As for the combo disk, I actually like them. I can play them on either of my tvs that way. :)
The thing that really ticked me today... it sounds like Warner is holding back major releases until they're ready in both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray... mostly due to the Java app being a real pain to program for. :(

I don't understand that article, it says plug the controller in, plug the ethernet cable in as well. What does that have to do with BD playback?
Anyway they released a new update this morning 1.51, hopefully that fixed what ever problems people were having.
PrimeBane
02-02-2007, 01:44 PM
The problem
A significant number of complaints surround the update’s affect on Blu-ray playback, reportedly causing high definition movies to freeze.
The fix
Although Sony has yet to offer some much-needed advice on the matter, self-proclaimed audio-video experts are telling forum visitors to do the following:
Reconnect the wireless controller
Attach the PlayStation 3 to web router using a direct Ethernet cable
It seems most of the issues are affecting users linked to the internet via wireless connection.
So if you don't connect your PS3 to the net via wireless, you shouldn't have to worry. :)

If you really don't want to worry then don't sign online. I haven't been on Sony online since early december. I never trust those first wave patches....I like to download them weeks if not months after a patch fixes the patch that was supposed to fix a patch.

It is always not that easy. I am usually the same way with patches, but if you want to go to the PS store to get demos you have to update anyway. Plus when they fixed the graphics for PS2 games I was all over it.

I guess I'm different because I don't like downloading/playing demos. I just think most times you don't get a very good representation of what you'll be playing...sometimes for the good sometimes for the bad. So me signing onto sony online has never been much of an issue....I mean I only have 1 game and I'm not too huge on it's multiplayer so I'm never on. That will unfortunately changed when Virtua Fighter is out....I'm going to have to sit there forever having to catch up.

Fortunately or Unfortunately, you will not need to go online on VF5, it has no online capabilities. Sega said due to the time specific moves, the lag from online will hamper the game so they didn't include it.
The patch downloads are fairly quick.
You are missing out on MotorStorm though. I don't judge a game on it's demo, if the demo is bad. But if it is a good demo, I play it until the game comes out. MotoStorm should be played by everyone who has a PS3.

I read this week on gametab.com that they're saying in an article how a PS3 price drop would be "very difficult"
Seriously, they don't need a price drop, they just need 3 exclusive games that are rated 80 or above and the thing will start selling.

yeah that's what happened with me. I got a PS3 and now have 7 Blu-Ray titles to my 19 HD DVDs. As long as Universal and Weinstein back HD DVD, it'll still be around, it just won't be the leader.
3 video game systems exist, I'd imagine 2 HD DVD formats can exist, as well.
And if not, that's too bad, because HD DVD still looks so beautiful in my opinion.

Walmart likely wasn't "out" of HD DVDs they likely never got them. I go to Walmart bi-weekly now and they simply never get HD DVDs in (this is over a span of me checking 4 different walmarts within a 10 minute drive). They got in V for Vendetta and King Kong and Lady in the Water and from what I've seen they are content with just having those 3 titles warm the pegs (one of the walmarts doesn't even put the movies out you are required to "ask" about what they have). On the Blu-Ray side they are on a weekly basis getting in the top title of that week and then usually one or two others for that week. For instance this week they got in Open Season which was the top title then Flyboys and Harts War. While the week before they got in Saw 3 which was the top title and also the Guardian and Chicago. They only put out 3-5 copies of each movie so you gotta move quick on them. People are starting to smarten up when it comes to Walmart....they have the best prices by far and if they don't, they price match.
If you know where to look you can find every HD DVD title ever made though. Between Best Buy and...well Best Buy they've got you covered. Target absolutely sucks...they get in 10 blu-ray titles and 10 hd dvd titles and call it a day. Walmart from my experiences has been very pro blu-ray...gamestop doesn't even count they only have 5 titles in. But I mean around here you never have any problems finding HD DVD titles. On any given tuesday I've gotta run around to 2-3 different stores to pick up the Blu-Ray releases I want...when it comes to HD DVD Best Buy always puts the stuff out on time. But on the same note thats just my best buy.

Everything you said was pretty much spot on. Even though Target does suck for selection, there are 2 bright spots. 1: They are completely equal on the 2 formats, and 2, at least for HD DVDs, if they do happen to have the title you're looking for, it'll be cheaper there than any other brick and mortar that carries them (possibly the same as Wal-Mart, but as the Wal-Marts around here don't carry anything but XMen3, I wouldn't know.)

Unless you've gone recently I'd check your Walmart again to see if they've updated. My Walmarts used to be exactly like yours (I've got 1 super Walmart and 3 regular Walmarts within a 10 minute drive from me so I checked all of them occassionally). But I mean they sucked for the most part. The HD DVD section was comprised of.....King Kong and Superman (thats it). And the Blu-Ray section was comprised of X-Men and Superman (thats it). Then all of a sudden right after Christmas they kicked in with on time releases. The 26th is when I started noticing that we were actually getting in new titles. I mean don't get me wrong Walmart still isn't reliable....they don't even bother ordering catalog titles released before 2000. But Best Buy is such a pain in the neck for me that they are a nice alternative.
Now-a-days I can generally pick up all the titles I need between Best Buy and Walmart....before I'd have to try out the local movie stores, target, etc. but BB and Walmart have been very good for me. Only thing I haven't been able to get my hands on that I really wanted was last weeks Fox releases....which seem to not have shipped to anywhere other then Circuit Citys and I don't have one of those..
Also on an unrelated note anyone else somewhat bummed that the largest commercial stage in the world (The Superbowl) had absolutely NO high def ads what-so-ever. I mean I can't go 2 seconds without seeing a Blu-Ray add on HDNet for Dish Network but during the SB I really thought they'd try at least one commercial.

I would say about 50 - 75% of the commericals here were HD OTA. The other 50% were not and had the bars on top and bottom.

But on the same note thats just my best buy.
No best buy here except their distribution center. CC has a ton of Blu Ray in one section and has HD DVD scattered throught with the regular DVD's. Walmart section sucks and Target sucks as well. Thats about it. Gamestop and Fye's do not carry them where i live. So its either ebay or you guys that want to sell them to me :D . Also I will probably order them of Amazon as well.
I love HD DVD and the 360 addon but I still think they are in trouble and need to get some HUGE hits out very fast

I thought for the most part the commercials all sucked anyway.

At one point at my WM, they couldn't keep most HD-DVDs on the shelves and BD sat... now it's the opposite. Within a week the BD were nearly cleared out and now most of the HD-DVD are sitting.

A little good news for HD-DVD from Warner:
First of all, thank you for your support of Warner Bros. and for our films in the new HD DVD format, as well as the existing SD DVD format. As you have pointed out in your note, there have recently been on-line discussions claiming that Warner Home Video is holding titles back from the marketplace in the HD DVD format due to plans in BD, and that this is now a company policy. Regardless of the source of this information, it is not true.
Warner Home Video is releasing titles in both high definition formats, and where possible we try to release a title simultaneously in both formats. But this is not always the case, and in fact since we released our first titles in April, 2006 there have been some titles that have been released in HD DVD before BD, and some that have been released in BD before HD DVD.
There are many factors that determine the timing for the release of a motion picture in DVD, HD DVD, and BD. We currently have released more titles in HD DVD than any other studio, and we are anticipating a very exciting schedule for the rest of 2007. In the month of January 2007, we released 4 new titles in HD DVD.
We hope you will enjoy our upcoming HD DVD releases, including two of our best movies from last year (and both recognized with multiple Academy Award nominations), THE DEPARTED and HAPPY FEET, which will be released in February and March 2007, respectively.
We also expect to announce shortly some title plans for April and May. The titles will be quite a thrill for all HD DVD owners and supporters.
Best regards.
I look forward to the announcement :)

Oh my God this one sounds and looks great, and the shipping was lightning fast for only 5 bucks.
The only downside is, since it's an import, it doesn't come in the standard maroon plastic case, but instead more of a cardboard oversleeve. Not a huge deal, I'm sure eventually there will be blank HD DVD cases you can buy.

go to avsforum.com under the blu-ray picture quality tier thread....you can get a good idea for what movies are worth getting on blu-ray. T2 and Devil's Rejects are not really that great of transfers.
Some good ones are: Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven, Crank, Kung Fu Hustle, Underworld Evolution, Tears of the Sun...and basically anything CGI.
That is NOT the purpose of the tier system. What you're asking for is a ranking of movies "worth it" to upgrade from standard DVD to next gen DVD. That is NOT the tier system.
The tier system, while useful in its own way, describes the picture quality of a next gen DVD. Picture quality includes 3D effects, dirty artifacts in the picture, muddy blacks, etc. The basic concept of it is if your friend came over and was like "ok blow me away with HD," you'd grab a tier 0 movie and impress. The picture quality of movies (supposedly) decreases as you increase tiers. I say supposedly, as there is obviously a human choice element to it.
This does NOT mean that the next gen movie is BETTER than the standard DVD version. Example, Sleepy Hollow is a tier 3 movie. The second worst picture quality tier you can get (in their opinion). While this may be so, the next gen version of Sleepy Hollow BLOWS AWAY the current release in terms of picture quality. I don't know if they remastered it, or the reading machine had a better day, but it's way better. Definitely worth an upgrade if this is one of your favorite movies.
On the other hand, from the very first post in the Blu-ray Disc tier thread, "Silent Hill, XXX and Dinosaur look nearly identical to their DVD counterparts." Silent Hill and XXX are tier 3, but Dinosaur is tier 2!
Just to sum up, because it all is VERY confusing, the tier system is not a "worth it to upgrade from standard DVD to next gen DVD" ranking system. It's just comparing next gen DVDs to next gen DVDs in terms of picture quality. And don't forget it's just an opinion at that.
Chugga

While I think jaylisjayp and hollandx are actually talking about the exact same thing but don't realize it, I still wouldn't get too caught up on the tier system. I'm the proud owner of a couple tier3 and lower disks. When it's all said and done it's about the movies. Dude wheres my car could be tier -9 and it wouldn't really help anything. Where as the 5th element is tier crappy and I still picked it up.
If you want to impress buddies and all that good stuff then the tier system is great to figure out exactly what movie is going to blow them away. But if you just wanna watch a good action flick then hell, doesn't matter what tier Rambo is...either way you get to see a bunch of people get stabbed with woodlands objects. And he throws a freakin rock at the windshield of a helicopter, how crazy is that.

Gears of War and Lost Planet are better then Resistance but Quake4 and COD2, I can't get on board with that. Quake 4 was awful and COD2 was jaggy as all hell in comparison to todays titles.
I don't know maybe it's your settings but if Resistance is looking worse then those 2 games then I'd definately give them a look over and make sure you have everything set to the right resolution because if everything is set up right there should be absolutely no comparison what-so-ever between Resistance and Quake.

I had never seen the movie up until a few days ago but thought hey 19.99 at Walmart, amazing cast, I've heard good things about it, why not. So I bought it and me and my 2 friends were pretty blown away by how great the movie was.
One of my favorite songs of all time got it's origins from Young Guns which I NEVER knew. Anyone who even bothered turning on a hip-hop station in the 90's will immediately be like "holy crap thats where they got it from".
Aside from that Billy the Kid in the movie is just one of the most bad@$$ characters I've seen on film. Just don't think it's going to be the brat pack meets old western....you do the movie a disservice....while I love the brat pack movies, Young Guns is on a whole other level. April 10th
Matrix -Warner :D
Matrix Revolutions - Warner :D
No Reloaded ?!
Say it ain't so:(
If the HD-DVD people knew what was good for them, they'd force WB to keep the Matrix titles HD-DVD Exclusive.
It just doesn't make sense to me why the consumer can't have it both ways...don't be forced to choose one over the other for a handful of movies, just make them for both formats.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to buy this week.
The only title I KNOW I'm getting is The Departed. The only title I KNOW I'm not getting is the Marine.
Everything else just has a huge question mark next to it. The Usual Suspects, Phone Booth, Reign of Fire, Ladder 49....wouldn't be against getting any of them, haven't seen most of them.
Anyone have any "definately get that" or "steer clear of it" picks?

If you like dragons and are partial to that whole "post apocalyptic" type movie, you'll enjoy Reign of Fire. I know it got blasted by many, but my entire family really enjoyed the movie and watched it several times when it came out on DVD.
And the HD DVD version from Japan is considered a tier 1 movie on AVS.
If I had a BD player, I'd be picking up Reign, Departed and Planet of the Apes (although the PQ isn't that great I guess).

I don't really care about PQ too much. I'm not saying I don't give the 5 star reviews a little more love then the 3 star ones but overall I'm in it for good movies, so I'd take a good movie with crappy PQ over a crappy movie with good PQ.
Planet of the Apes was one of the movies I've actually already seen....it was decent but I don't really know if I'd drop cash on it.

Personally, I would put the Usual Suspects into the "definitely get" category, especially after the highdefdigest rating. It's a great movie, extremely well acted, good twists, action, colorful characters...and I know you said it doesn't matter to you that much, but apparently a 4/5 picture quality. That alone sealed the deal for me, since I traded in my oooooold DVD a few months ago.

We went in there to the BD section and asked the guy how the promo work and he said it was any title and that you had to get the same price BD's to get the buy 1 get 1 deal. So we had our titles and go to pay, come to find out that the guy ringing us up got all the titles mixed up and inreturn messed up the computer saying that none of the title were part of the promo. So an 1 1/2 later we finially get everything striaghtend out and we walked away with 10 BD movies for $125

Heres the latest about next gen in Australia(from IGN)
JB Hi-Fi to Stock Blu-ray Only
Aussie retailer backs Sony's format of choice.
by Patrick Kolan, IGN AU
Australia, February 13, 2007 - In a sign that HD DVD might well be dead on arrival when it is released in Australia within the next couple of months, major Australian entertainment retailer, JB Hi-Fi has commented that they will only be stocking Blu-ray format HD movies and entertainment.
According to iTWire, the company has backed the PS3's format of choice, simply due to the number of film companies who have committed to the format.
"Blu-ray is the only format that has the ability to tell the whole story, with the most comprehensive offering on the market. With seven of Hollywood's leading studios accounting for the vast majority of 2006's home video sales, among the 170 plus companies globally that support Blu-ray Disc, it makes sense that content will be king when it comes to Blu-ray," commented JB Hi-Fi Marketing Director Scott Browning.
We are curious as to whether this will affect their decision to sell the Xbox 360's HD DVD drive add-on, which is scheduled to be released in Australia in late March. We are currently seeking comment from the company, so check back soon for any developments.

Or it could be the fact that Blu Ray has and will continue to have a better and more varied selection of movies. 2 for 1 deals have been going on forever. Don't act like "evil" Sony concocted this scheme by themselves to take over the world. It's called competing and if the HD DVD manufacturers were smart, they would hurry up and do something before it's too late.

Exactly. Blu-Ray is getting their movies out faster and with better overall selection. Plus, HD-DVD is in trouble as long as Disney, Fox and Sony continues to only support Blu-Ray. That's a TON of good titles HD-DVD won't be getting. There was a good article on the digital bits about the sales and that and they mentioned a format is only as good as the movie library available for it. Right now Blu-Ray has a far superior catelog and way more exclusive titles both out and on the way.

I don't want to jump into this format war too much because I hate being stuck with a losing format so I only have The Descent and Crank right now. PrimeBane
02-14-2007, 01:02 PM
Well for standard DVD players most use component or S-Video cables.
For upconverting DVD players people use HDMI.
Cables alone though will not make your DVDs look like HD... upconversion is required and due to security in place, these upconversions (providing it's an upconverting DVD) can only be done over HDMI, DVI or VGA cables.

If your DVD player is good enough to even use an HDMI cable, then the picture quality will be a pretty decent improvement. Don't listen to the guys on here that say the quality will approach Blu Ray and HD DVD levels of quality. That's completely ridiculous.

It depends on the upconverting player and the native resolution of your HDtv.
A good upconverting player, like the Oppo DVI-981 HD, can give you a next to HD picture on your HDtv especially if it's native res is 720p. At 1080i and 1080p the picture won't be quite as good, but still considerably better than a progressive scan DVD player.

Obviously, I know I missed some titles that are on both formats, and exclusives, too. Also, the BR list is shorter because there's no point in naming the same movie twice that's on BR & HD-DVD. I suppose I could have put the titles that share formats in one list, but I don't have that much free time:)
The titles listed above are the ones I think should not be in high definition. I did not base it on 'good' or 'bad' movie, just ones I felt were either so crappy that they weren't worthy to be in high def, or were unnecessary to be seen in HD (Blazing Saddles Adventure of Robin Hood, Dirty Dozen, movies with no FX, etcetera).

Theres a alot I disagree with....first and foremost John Legend: Live at the House of Blues. I know it's a little homer in me talking (I'm a huge John Legend fan, have front row seats to his next show around here) but it's got HD audio....I can't even bring myself to listen to his first cd anymore because it just sounds at least 50 billion times better in PCM 5.1.
Another few names that stick out to me are Memento and Big Fish. Both of those are 2 of my favorite movies of all time and shine in HD. Memento had a really strong transfer and Big Fish has all the potential in the world to look amazing. Thats one of the most colorful movies I've probably ever seen before in my life, it's a movie that could really catch people by suprise in the picture department.
I just personally don't agree with the whole "they should stop releasing movies just for the sake of releasing movies" argument. Both of these formats are trying their hardest to muscle DVD out of the equation...everyone looks at this war as blu-ray vs. hd-dvd but in the end both of those guys can fail if they don't squeeze enough people away from DVD....so you can't just release movies that will traditionally look good in HD...you've gotta throw everyone out there and hope certain things stick with certain crowds. Everyone knows they should buy blu-ray/hd-dvd for spider-man, king kong, etc. But what after they get their eye candy purchases out of the way....they are going to want the classics that they've loved for years, stuff like Rambo, Rocky, etc. While I know basically everyone in this thread is more concerned with the whole pristine HD aspect more then anything else (I myself am also guilty of this) when it's all said and done these companies want to flat out replace a format that has every single title known to man out for it. They gotta make steps towards catching up with a format that seems almost impossible to catch up to. Also it's a huge selling point for both sides. If one format has 400 titles on it's shelves and another has 200 regardless of how awful the 400 titles may be the casual consumer making decisions based off of which format is going to have more movies he likes is always going to go with the display overflowing with tons of different movies....even if 50 of those movies consist of dude wheres my car, little man, and the covenant.
You'd be suprised by movie fans out there. And while it may sound strange some of my favorite blu-ray movies I own are Rambo, Lethal Weapon, etc. Mainly because watching them on normal DVD is just painful...I feel like I'm watching those movies on 18inch radio/tv's. The step from dvd to blu-ray/hd-dvd on some of the older flicks can be breathtaking...granted you may not see every single hair on a mans beard like alot of 2004+'s movies just the overall pictures receives such an upgrade that I never have a problem dropping $20's on an upgrade of a 1980's movie.

Some interesting developments across the pond.
Studio Canal (major movie distributor) was pretty much an HD DVD exlusive company, will now release BD movies.
And Fox in Europe will be releasing HD DVDs.

The problem here is that there aren't a whole lot of people who say: "OMG, I can't even watch regular DVDs anymore!". Hardly anybody says that. There aren't going to be a whole lot of people upgrading their Breakfast Club and Fast Times DVDs anytime soon. What would be the purpose? It's almost 3 times the price for a slightly improved picture. The people you just described are casual buyers who wouldn't buy HD or Blu Ray right now anyway because of the price. No thanks, I'll keep my regular movies and only replace stuff with a quality picture.

Honestly Chugga, I wouldn't be surprised to see Weinstain go neutral next year... same goes for Universal and Lion's Gate... Beuna Vista is my longshot to go neutral, but they're a way safer bet than the morons at Fox.

It's strange because about 3 months ago when Buena Vista was releasing crap transfers of crap movies on Blu-Ray Buena Vista was talked about as getting a 1 way ticket to format neutrality. And then CES blew most of those thoughts away and now they are one of Blu-Rays most loyal companies.
I personally think alot of the smaller studios will go format neutral just because they don't have alot of stuff to put out and they'll have to find a way to sell stuff eventually. Weinstein has a bunch of good movies but after their initial 2 year burst with HD-DVD they honestly don't have much left to really put out thats going to be a success. Same with Lions Gate....they've got some great titles but they'll run their course sooner then the heavy hitters like Universal and Buena Vista.
As for Universal....I mean I'd love to hear that announcement, but not yet. It's actually somewhat of a blessing in disguise that each format only has so many backers....so you aren't getting bombarded with 25 releases a week. I like the fact that we're only getting maybe 3-8 titles a week. Warners slow rollout has helped too...I still get to look forward to stuff like Batman Begins and V for Vendetta.
I wanted to be format neutral but my wallet told me no on numerous occassions. It's not the $200 HD-DVD add-on that makes my wallet cry, it's the ridiculous amount of titles that I know I'd be suckered into buying. I mean I've given alot of titles tryouts in hd....some had good results (the guardian) and some were well...not smart choices (into the blue). And I know if I had both players the sheer amount of movies "I'd give a shot" would have me broke by May.

Well, when it comes to Beuna Vista I figure if HD DVD can prove itself saleswise to them then they'll go neutral... they're not as firmly planted as Sony or Fox (Sony owns stock in Fox and Fox are the DRM nazis).
Universal will go neutral simply due to the large numbers...
By mid 2008 assuming HD DVD does well enough sales wise, the only remaining non neutral studios will be Fox and Sony (and any studios owned by them).
But that's just my opinion.

This is very true. I'm just opening my eyes to the fact that there really is no major differences between the "tiers" on the avsforum threads. There's really just the HD tier and the SD tier. I've started dabbling in the lower Tier 2, upper Tier 3 movies and honestly find some of them look better than stuff they have it Tier 1.
I just watched The Usual Suspects Blu Ray today, a low-budget movie from 13 years ago, and I thought it looked damn amazing. I ditched my DVD copy last year and hadn't seen it for a while, and while I'm sure it'll get placed somewhere in Tier 2 or Tier 3 on the avsforum thread....to me it's worth every penny.

No not all Walmarts are like that....all 4 of my Walmarts carry both formats but tend to endorse just 1 of them. The Walmart I go to the most (super walmart) has about 12 Blu-Ray movies (not a lack of movies just they get in 1 shipment and with the great prices they sell out real quick and then never restock) and about 4 HD-DVD movies. They never get ANY new HD-DVD movies in unless it's a huge release....they got in King Kong, Superman, and now The Departed but anything outside of that and they don't carry it. All my other 3 Walmarts are alot more of the same thing. If I had to say it I honestly believe Walmart is at least partially biased.
As for selling my original DVD collection I haven't done that yet. Right now I'm just replacing 1 by 1 (on titles I deem worthy of replacing). I picked up Crash on Blu-Ray and the next day traded in Crash on DVD at Gamestop...same for a few more titles like Pearl Harbor, Lethal Weapon, etc. And no I haven't looked back or regretted it one bit...I'm kinda hooked on the whole HD era, my TV is finally living up to it's expectations and I love it.

You can already get that for 5 bucks cheaper at Target. It retails for 19.99 there. So, maybe ask them to match the price and then get the 5 bucks off in addition.
The Last Samurai was good. I have seen the movie and own it on HD DVD, but can't speak to the PQ since I haven't seen the HD DVD yet. But reviews are positive of it.

You are absolutely correct. I know...because I am one of these people. I've had this conversation before with chugga over xbox live while killing various things....be it Gears, Rainbow Six, or Oblivion.
While I can easily admit there is a difference in the picture quality between SD and HD ones....there is not enough of a difference in experience that makes me want to A) go buy an HD player and B) start paying over $20 a movie to replace my DVDs. Yes...the picture will look a little better....the sound will be a little more crisp....but it's just not a big enough leap forward to make me move on to the next level.
With gaming consoles....it was an easy choice...once I played the 360....it was worth it to move up from the PS2.
With tv's....another easy choice....the difference between my widescreen 1080i LCD and my 32" standard rear projection tv was like night and day and well worth the money.
With surround sound speakers.....another easy choice. Listening to anything (games, movies, football) is 10X better in surround sound then with just the TV speakers.
That's part of the reason I can't see making the jump to HD DVDs. When I went from watching DVDs on my 32" tv to watching them on my 1080i LCD with surround sound...it was like WOW!!!! Gladiator looked AMAZING. Saving Private Ryan sounded INCREDIBLE with the bullets whizzing past your head (or at least it seemed like they were). To me...the money invested to get that experience upgrade was well worth it.
However, the HD format just doesn't push things so far forward from what I have now that I must go out and purchase it. It is just not worth it to me. And I am betting grif32 is correct and that there are a lot more out there like me.

I understand where you are coming from....most casual people won't even talk about not replacing their collections because most casual people won't even look at buying a player with how expensive they are right now. But in all honesty what I believe we are looking at it early adopters price gouging...but thats another point for another day.
As for DVD it's still a fight that you need to wage. Will blu-ray or hd dvd ever actually topple DVD? Of course not, will never happen, doesn't even have a chance. But you've still gotta fight just for the sake of fighting and to put on a good show for the consumers.
While I understand the whole "but those movies aren't even good in HD" line the movies that are getting released now are just to fill up store displays. Of all the movies you've listed I saw a ton of movies I could either care less about, suck, or are pointless to have on HD. BUT this war is all about showing dominance and like I had said before if one company can put out 500 titles while the other hardly hits 250 people are going to see that and people are going to take notice. It's like flashing your wallet and having a 50 in the front, a 100 in the back and the middle of your wallet laced with tons of 1 dollar bills. You look rich as hell, but if you look deeper we all know you aren't. Thats what high def companies are trying to do they are trying to fill up those displays and look dominant when in reality more then half the titles are crap.
You just can't take everything for face value here...everyone is fighting for position in every way they can. These crap HD releases are no different, just space fillers.

Is there a noticable difference between HDMI cables as far as picture quality is concerned? I just picked up a new tv for my bedroom and was shopping cables. Just as an example Monster Cable 12ft HDMI's were more than twice as much as a 12ft Phillips cable.

With HDMI the digital signal either gets there or it doesn't.
Of course there are exceptions like long cable runs and VERY high end home theatres, but for the average consumer, the $10 HDMI cable will work just as well as the $200 one.

Grif, from what I have read (a few articles here and there), the PS3 holds up very well as a blu ray player. And if you at any point are going to play the games, to me it's a no-brainer.
Chugga
02-17-2007, 01:26 AM
PS3 is the best blu-ray player out on the market hands down. Not because it has amazing blu-ray features and functionality, but because you can play PS3 games on it. Now don't get me wrong the PS3 overall is pretty weak right now, most of it's best games I own for the 360 and the few exclusives aren't exactly amazing. But one day thats going to change and when that day comes you'll have both a BR player and a PS3.
Then to top all of that off it's the cheapest player out on the market now. Sure the Samsung can be had for $700 but thats the faultiest BR player out right now, I can't imagine wanting to go out and buy that one. You could always go with the Sony or Panasonic but those are going to run you a G each and theres no hiding it what-so-ever they are overpriced by about $500.
For me the PS3 has made a great opener for Blu-Ray....one of these days I will get a standalone player for the extra features/functionality but today isn't that day. I'd much rather see some second gen players and solid players that don't require 50 hours of firmware.

The only thing the PS3 is lacking is upconversion capability for SD DVDs. Well, not the only thing, but the main thing.

Upconversion on the PS3 is "supposed to" be available next month.
I'd love one just for BD playback, but until the price comes down or there's a few games that I "have to" have it's not in my future.
Back to movies... watched Corpse Bride last night... beautiful PQ but I found it to be a dud of a movie like much of the crap Tim Burton puts out.

The PS3 are doing upconversion now, but you have to install Linux first. Until I see more people installing Linux, I will wait.
The Tech Savvy are using VLC to play the DVDs on their PS3 upconverted.

Yeah we watched the blu-ray last night. Not the best picture quality out there, but definitely up at the top. Crank was better imo.
Also watched the Mummy HD-DVD, which looks good. And we picked up The Mummy Returns HD DVD today. Gonna watch that one tonight.

Crank should be the best BR out there. I believe that was shot with and HD camera.
Departed HD look good but not great. Flip it to the SD side an almost cried. SD was so bad. Its getting hard to watch SD movies now
Mummy Returns the 1st half PQ was not good. The 2nd half of the movie the PQ was amazing.
I need to pick up the Mummy on HD.
I am going to sell my Xbox 360 Add-on here in a few days. Going to pick up the Toshiba HD A2 only because I can not upcovert with the 360 since I dont have VGA. Atleast the Toshiba will upcovert over HDMI
Really want tha AX2 but for $800 way to rich for my blood.

HD DVD will still be around for at least another couple years. Universal won't jump ship before then.
Watched Accepted just now...**** Blockbuster disc started freezing up. Anyway, the movie looked all right, pretty flat. Movie itself was surprisingly enjoyable, though nothing I'd buy.

Exactly... when both sides have barely sold 500k each, neither is exactly burning up the video sales charts.
Both formats will remain in play until HVD destroys them both with its 1440p movies. :D
