i'm sure this has been asked in here a million times.
I'm lookin to get a dlp tv, where's the best places to look and help me decide.
Amazon is a good place to start - reviews are pretty good - when you see one you look I'd ask in here as there are a couple guys that really know their stuff that'll let you know the pros/cons of the model your looking at.

For anyone that regrets buying the HD DVD HP set (and no, not because it's on HD DVD, because it's looks like ****) I pulled these off a thread on AVS, in the software area somewhere. I'll probably buy a few empty cases and put these in them instead. I was suckered into the whole leather/metal/fleshbound etc etc cases but this time I want the emphasis to be on the movie itself and a nice, simple case. Hope Photobucket doesn't resize them.

well i'll keep looking, but i'll throw out what i'm looking for :)
50", 1080p, rear projection is what we're looking at.
I like the dlps, and we found a Sony at circuit city here that we really like, I don't know the model number but it's 50, 1080p, 2 hdmi, 3lcd (dont' know much about that) bravia.
we're not set on any particular brand yet. 1500 is about our max.
Any help will be greatly appreciated :)

If you can get your hands onto a KDS50A3000, go with it SXRD, I have the A2000 and I love it, Sony is getting out of the RPTV business to focus more onto their LCD line (it has a higher gross margin)

I would look into the Toshiba Regza line. 3 HDMI inputs and its an LCD and not a Rear Projection TV where you have to replace the bulbs every 2 - 3 year. Which is costly over the life of the TV.
Samsung makes some nice LCD's as well.
Myself I could never buy a DLP. Plasma or LCD for me.
Which I could help more.

PS3 games suck IMO. Ninja Gaiden is about the only thing I play. I bought hevenly sword but that sucks.
Xbox 360 has a few games I like to play
Again IMO the WII has the better games right now.
Didn't you buy that HS from me? I sold mine to someone on here. Can't remember if it was you or another guy.
PS3 has some really good games for it now. You are really missing out if you don't play Uncharted. It is great.
Wii has some really fun games, but it does have a lot of quick, make a buck filler too. Usually pretty easy to spot. The steller Wii titles are very good though.

Does anyone know if Target usually gets Blu-Ray releases such as Man on Fire the day of release? I have noticed they usually get "New New" movies that are released, but not sure about older movies being released on Blu or HD DVD. The reason I would like to buy at Target is because I have a gift card I would like to use for it.

Just got back from TRU's and I picked up two BR titles Cars and POTCAWE for:
$11.99 which includes tax for both movies. So $6.00/title is amazing.
LOL
They took the $5.00 (any bluray disney movie) coupon off as well as the $10 for POTCAWE no problems at all. She took both and they both scanned.
both I just printed out from Bluray.com
Unreal deal..
some are saying to can print two of the $5.00 coupons out one for each movie..
All movies are $24.99 except Meet the Robinsons which I think was $28.99

the war has been won
the next front is SD vs Blu
anyway.... went to TRU today and picked up Ratatouille and Cars
was able to use 2 of the $5 off Disney coupons bringing my total to $16.61 with tax for both movies
also in case you are seeking the movies out at the store and notice slim pickings in the dvd area ... make sure and go to the videogames area as there were more titles on a Blu endcap in that section... I wouldn't have found Ratatouille if it weren't for that area of the store

If HD-DVD decides to go on with the War and DW and Uni are behind them, then I would expect to see a lot of bit hitters to be released and try to sway over a studio from the BR group. It will be an interesting few weeks before we will see what Toshiba and its partners are made of or if they throw in the towel.

puting together a release schedule is not as simple as that
if one had heavy hitters to offer there is plenty of planning, marketing, forecasting, packaging, manufacturing, soliciting, scheduling (and more "ing" words) that all goes into the equation
DW and Uni have nothing they are holding back that they can release in a short period of time that will make any difference in this matter or that the Blu side couldn't counter

POTC 1 -$24.99
POTC 2 - Free
POTC 3 -$24.99
Cars - Free
Total would be $50.00 then minus $10.00 for POTC 3 brings it down to $40.00 then minus $20.00 (4) $5.00 coupons that would make it $20.00 plus tax for all 4. Holy Crap..
Plus there is a $10.00 Rebate for buying Cars on BR.
So for $10.00 you get 4 movies...
Going back tomorrow
Can resell them for a little profit

puting together a release schedule is not as simple as that
if one had heavy hitters to offer there is plenty of planning, marketing, forecasting, packaging, manufacturing, soliciting, scheduling (and more "ing" words) that all goes into the equation
DW and Uni have nothing they are holding back that they can release in a short period of time that will make any difference in this matter or that the Blu side couldn't counter
I know most of it is unlikely, but I would still like to see them pull something out of their a s s and make one last who rah!!

I think people are writing off hd dvd too quickly - they've "been dead" what, about 5 times over now?
Sure, it looks bleak, but you never know - they've shown they'll shell out cash for studio support and stranger things have happened. We should know in the next week whether tosh is going to continue to fight or just let the format die off.

Gotta love Michael Bay! :D
Well another studio down. Maybe I was right? Blu ray is just better. HD will die a slow death. It's what I predicted a year ago. Now with Warner's down for the count with Blu Ray. That makes it easier for Wal-Mart to push Blu Ray. And whatever Wal-Mart pushes - wins. Hd better start giving out those $120 million dollars checks to stay alive. Maybe they can give me some so I can give it to my Make-A-Wish charity, just to shut me up. Have faith people Transformers will come out in Blu-ray one day!

I know the look, color, and sounds on my own movies better they anyone in the world. I color-time every single image, and am there for every single audio tweak. I see my films in the editing and final process no less then a 100 times. I know ever single nuance. For some **** wads on these posts who think I can't make an informed choice on what format in the end, has the truer results for my own films. Well you where to shove.... My films finished in Blu-Ray are better - more true. Hd is better than DVD, but just not as good as Blu-Ray. So buying a Transformers Hd is still the best you will see this movie as of today. But when Paramount caves for Blu-Ray in the future - This will happen, then you will see Transformers one day finished in Blu-Ray and I will sure be able to tell the difference.

Michael Bay is officially mentally ******ed. Your films look better on Blu, instead of HD-DVD? Really? Seeing as how they often use the exact same codecs, have the same bitrates, and other nonsense?
Do you even know what color timing is, you ****wad? Seriously, this guy seems to know less about film then me, and I only minored in it in college.
Pick up a film term dictionary, you ******. What an embarassment.

The other quote is comical - blu is paying out money to studios as well - I'd also like to see where he said a year ago hd dvd would be dead.
Cripes he rambles on like Transformers is an epic movie when it's nothing more than a summer flick.

How can anyone not respect Michael Bay. I mean he has the same car chase scene in pretty much every movie. Think about it. It started with Bad Boys 2 with the cars falling on the highway. Then in the Island they were on the truck throwing of train wheels off of it onto the highway in the exact same way.

The studio’s switch means the outlook is gloomy for the studios that have championed HD-DVD. Universal, owned by General Electric, has been the format’s biggest champion but it was keeping tight-lipped yesterday about its next move.
It was also unclear yesterday whether the other studios backing HD-DVD would change sides, although it is understood Paramount has reserved the right to switch its backing to Blu-ray.
Unless HD DVD has some grand ace up its sleave (and I fear that the only ace went out the window with Fox/Warner), at the very least Paramount/Dreamworks will be announcing dual or Blu only by the end of the week.

say who?
well, that link i posted for one...(from the link >>>) Paramount made an 18-month deal with HD DVD when they decided to go HD DVD exclusive back in August 2007. This means that they will not be able to release on Blu-ray before February/March 2009.
Also, wasn't that the whole point? Exclusivity? That typically doesn't include the option of not being exclusive anymore if the studio chooses so.
I also wouldn't take what FT.com says as truth. I can't tell you how many articles from major news sources (of which FT is not) like Wall Street Journal or The Associated Press who have just blatantly gotten high def info flat wrong.
If you can really confirm that somewhere, then I stand corrected. But judging from what the deal was reported at, and what Paramount just said today, they won't be switching anytime soon. Just like Warner has to keep releasing HD DVDs until May, I believe it's part of whatever contract they set up.

I agree with you and the points that you make about the Paramount deal. Like you said, it is the whole point of the deal. At the same time, I'm sure if they really wanted, they could buy their way out of the deal if they really wanted to. Money always talks.
Would it make more or less sense for Paramount to put out HD-DVDs or just not release them anymore? If the market for HD-DVDs really shrinks as much as most people think it will, do they make enough money to even justify releasing the discs?
Say HD-DVD really was dead based on the Warner deal and assume that Paramount really did get $150 million for their original deal. Would Paramount just benefit more (make more money) just sitting around and releasing none to a few titles and maximizing the $150 mil they got, or would they actually make some money and get a benefit from releasing more movies?

I dont get why everyone feels like it is such a bad thing. I just bought a HD-DVD drive for the 360 a few days ago from someone trying to ditch it. Just because they stop making dvds for it after a while doesnt mean it is going to stop working. Sure down the road I am going to get a PS3 for the Blu-ray fix, but for now I am happy I am getting a HD-DVD player.

HD-DVD wasent a bad invesment and still isnt. If your a fan of movies the owing both was just a fact you had to deal with. You also knew the risk of investing in both formats, that eventually one would die off (not that HD is done yet).

Im so glad i chose the ps3. I would be beyond pissed and feel stupid if i had hd dvd. I feel realy bad for heads that just got hd dvd for xmas though.
lol while many of us (including me) now tease hd dvd relentlessly, it isn't a DEAD format. I mean, the players just won't explode and cease to function. HDM is still HDM, and everyone with an HD player can still play all the movies they own, the ones they don't own out of 400 or so, plus all the ones that will still come out (at least for a little while).
i own 2 hd-dvd players (xa-2 and a-2) and they still work fine!! :p

Not a fan of a small touch screen on the remote, though I would imagine that you only use the touchscreen for stuff like activities and the advanced functions. Usually I like to just be able to use my remote by feel, which you can't do with the touchscreen.
Still I have to look down to use the advanced functions on by 550 so it wouldn't be so bad.

I really don't think we need to justify why owning HD DVD isn't a bad thing. People will come in and spew garbage to either make themselves feel better or just try to "stick it" to others.
Whatever.

Considering I paid less for TWO HD DVD players than I did for my first DVD player in '99, I'm still feeling pretty good. I felt especially good watching Borne Ultimatum on my A2 New Year's Eve (man, what a terrific movie!)
The only people that should maybe feel bad are those that bought a player just days before Jan 4th... but hopefully they can at least return them.
I personally plan to enjoy my HD DVDs for years to come. :)

I'm dissapointed at Warners decision to go Blu. But what could have been this year if Warners stuck to their guns. Dark Knight HD, Iron Man HD, Incredible Hulk HD, American Gangster HD, No Country For Old Men HD. I could go on and on. I'll go Blu when any of the LOTR extended films are released and can fit extras and all on one Blu-Ray disc. Will the firmware still have to be upgraded for HD players? I was wondering about that.

Unless Blu-ray offers one hell of a deal I'm quite content with keeping ALL of my HD DVD's (well, except Alpha Dog) and hardware. Not everyone wants to dump all of their stuff at the drop of a hat. I won't be replacing my collection, like ever. It's actually pretty cool that my HD DVD collection could become a niche, within a niche... I think.
Also, got a notice in the mail that HD DVD declined my free HD DVD's because I sent in a photocopy of the UPC instead of the original. Oh well, I have 2 months to send it in so I guess I'll be waiting quite a bit longer.

Yeah, for the most part I'm holding off on buying titles in hope there will be some fire sales, I'll still buy a title here or there but no more buying 5-6 at a time until the huge price cuts begin, unless HD DVD makes some kind of miraculous comeback then they can keep taking my money at normal or normal-sale type prices. upcoming BD Live standard (Blu-ray Profile 2.0) brings good things for PSP owners. Movies that follow the updated Blu-ray protocol can optionally offer handheld versions of the movie to be copied off the disc. You can, for example, have a Blu-ray version of Men in Black on your PS3 and copy a handheld version of the movie directly to PSP. "This way, you can have a portable copy you can take with you," explained David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment,

Well my Best buy order got delivered to the wrong address (my fault for having my old one in there) it was supposed to get forwarded but didn't - It was too late to knock on the door and see if the residents had it, but I might stop back there tomorrow.
I called best buy and they were actually pretty helpful - they put in a request to have it reshipped and said I should hear back in 5-10 days, however I got home and had emails that it was being reshipped. Only problem is the new shipping address was in GA?!?! (I live in WI) Called back again and they can't update that address, so it might ship out to the GA address. They said I should be covered though if it does.
Initially my mistake so I can't complain too much - but damn, where did they pull the GA address from.

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/29262/Paramount-denies-Blu-Ray-defection
once again, it doesn't say "exclusively"
i think it would benefit EVERYONE if paramount/dreamworks and universal went purple or blu as soon as possible.

What bonus features are on The Rock Blu Ray??
SPECIAL FEATURES: http://www.hometheaterspot.com/fusionbb/images/smilies/thumbup_1_.gif It’s almost surprising to see most of the extras from the Criterion released 2-DVD set make it to high definition. In the past, typically extras developed for Criterion aren’t found on the regular studio editions of films. This is a first that I’ve seen. All of the extras preserve their original 4:3 aspects and standard def fidelity. None are all that comprehensive on the making of the film. But, it’s nice to not have to give up anything meaningful when upgrading to a new, presumably better edition. The BD is the all-around champion in every category.
audio commentary with Michael Bay, Jerry Bruckheimer, Nicolas Cage, Ed Harris, and technical advisor Harry Humphries
teaser trailer
theatrical trailer
5 TV Spots
2 minute promo at and on the films world premiere at Alcatraz
6 minutes of civilian firearms training and interview footage with Navy Seals
8 minute firearms safety/training segment with two Hollywood technical advisors
8 minute special effects featurette on the “Dive” sequence
8 minute “Movie Magic” action effects featurette
9 minutes of outtakes
14 minute history of Alcatraz featurette
16 minute Jerry Bruckheimer interview
WRAP-UP: The Rock is a fan favorite actioner that many online have been impatiently awaiting its high def debut. Disney does not disappoint, preserving the worthwhile extras from the 2-disc Criterion set, while updating the audio and video to a much higher fidelity than even reference DVD can afford.

Well... we've had SOME confirmation this morning of the details of the Financial Times story from last night. While the studio isn't yet commenting, reliable industry sources are telling us that Paramount is indeed preparing to end their HD-DVD support and announce a return to the Blu-ray fold. Details are currently being finalized, and an announcement is expected as soon as they're complete. Paramount's first new Blu-rays will almost certainly include many of those titles that were cancelled last year, but that were already packaged and ready for shipping, so you could see them in stores very quickly once the studio announces.
Meanwhile, sources are telling us that Universal has also been talking with the BDA, and is looking to follow Paramount and Warner's lead as soon as possible.
On a related note, Times Online in the U.K. is now reporting that as many as 20 additional firms currently backing HD-DVD are also considering defection in the wake of Warner's Friday announcement, including Fujitsu, Lenovo, Kenwood and Pony Canyon (which is a major Japanese film and music studio).
What's more, word is starting to circulate at CES that major big box retailers will begin winding down in-store support for HD-DVD as soon as these studios go public with their decisions. We're told that the industry's major retail partners are already pressuring Paramount, DreamWorks and Universal to go Blu following Warner's decision.
Rumors are also beginning to circulate here that Apple's Steve Jobs may announce the addition of Blu-ray Disc drives to their Mac desktop lineup at next week's Macworld Expo in San Francisco.
We would caution you to keep in mind that all of this should be considered unofficial until the studios make their actual announcements. Things are moving very fast, and the situation is highly fluid. Still, it really looks like this is the end for HD-DVD, and the end of the format war overall. We'll keep you up to date with new developments as they break.
Stay tuned...

^^^ well there was a story on one of the sites today saying none of the new MACS have a blu-ray drive, for whatever that's worth.
Not saying what you posted isn't true, it probably is...but isn't digitalbits Bill Hunt's thing? Isn't he a big time blu fanboy?

He supports Blu-ray 110% definitely but he is also has enough clout that he was able to ask a question during the Blu-ray Disc Association Press Conference last night. He's well known and has a lot of sources.

Do you think that BR will quit having sales and BOGO's if everyone is on board, with the same format? Who will they have to compete with? They won't need to have promotions or sales?

I dont think so.I think the BOGO's are as much to get more and more discs into peoples homes thereby driving the format. At the 27.95-29.95 per disc price the average bear isnt even going to give the format a chance.

Yeah, I think you are partly right. I think they are having the sales so the early adopters build up their libraries and spread HD by word of mouth to friends and family. They need more players and more people buying discs, not the same buyers buying bogos.

Agreed-The higher the numbers on Blu Ray sales get the more public awareness increases. The tech buffs are what they have now-What they need is Joe Public to get involved and try the format or see the format at a friends. The Big Blu Ray displays at BJ Wholesale and Target certainly draw attention and get the interest elevated.

Confirming earlier reports that it would follow Warner to Blu-ray exclusivity, New Line says its first HD DVD title ('Pan's Labryinth') will also be its last.

I hope you all don't have a hard time finding Man on Fire. I went to CC and BB and none of them even had it in. Then I checked out Movie Stop and got the very last copy. Worth the trouble thought because it is one of my favorite movies of all time. :)

Isn't Man on Fire $34.99 everywhere? Stupid FOX.
Anyway, I ended up with Yuma, The Rock and Sunshine today.
The Rock has a coupon on the front that you get $10 back if you already own the DVD, plus I got BB to price match to $19.95....so it's basically like getting it for the BOGO price.

Bogo's with BR will continue and here is the reason:
I think BR sold 5.2 million disc all last year or a little more dont remember exact.. DVD sells that many of 1 title in a day/week.
BR must compete with DVD. Thats why BR wants to replace.
But in order to do that THEY MUST get full functional players under $200.00 which buy the look of the new players and the pricing this isnt happening.
Next they will continue with major Bogo's to sell more disc.
IMO..
