I hope you didn't pay $34.99 for it..because although it will be New Line's only HD DVD, it's not like there isn't a good amount out there. And when HD DVD dies, they'll be had for $15 bucks tops.

Looks like this weekend Im going to be picking up a new HD-TV for my room and a PS3 so I can get into this thing they call Blu Ray. :)
Got my 12% the TV coupon from BB in the mail today. Also have my $100 worth of reward points to use. Probably gonna grab a couple BR movies while Im out and maybe a PS3 game if I find something good.
Need to grab an xbox 360 add on HD-DVD player as well but it looks like people are starting to ditch them for cheap on ebay right now. May hold off and grab it on there.
Anyone have PS3 game recommendations in the meantime?

got sunshine, 3:10 to yuma, and zodiac today. sunshine was a blind buy, but I had been aching to see it. definitely a must own. excellent acting plus an intriguing story. may be one of the best blu rays I have seen so far. going thru the special features of zodiaz for the past two hours. theres a visual effects presentation and it is remarkable how much of the movie is cgi.

Uncharted is probably the best PS3 game right now. I'd get that if I was you. Warhawk is also fun, but only online. Heavenly Sword is cool but short. Ninja Gaiden is also cool, but hard.

I dont know if its true with BR but with HD-DVD I had the choice of either hooking up the ethernet cable and it automatically updated, i could have downloaded it off the interenet and burn it to a cd-rw and then update it like that or i could send away for the update discs.
I cant imagine BR would be much different then that though.

They took my coupon along with a price match of Wal-Marts price the week it came out. This is likely a YMMV thing.
Random unrelated story....
I actually tried to get BB to price match COD4 a couple weeks ago when Target was selling it for $37. The store closest to this BB happened to be sold out, but one 15ish minutes away had some copies. They refused to match it saying that it wasn't the local store.
I asked them to define local, since 15 minutes didn't seem unreasonable to me. It is the same metro area. They said local was whatever the closest store was. I said that wasn't what local meant and there is a BB near that store anyway. If they are one big chain, it should be an issue.
15 minutes of discussion and arguing later, I still didn't get COD4 from there. Totally annoying. Took the Target ad to Meijers and they matched it no problem.

Any thoughts on my previous comments regarding future Universal and Paramount releases? Will it even make sense for them to take the time and internal costs to make their HD-DVD releases, if it really seems as if Blu-Ray is going to win? It would seem to me that the market is going to shrink a ton for new HD-DVD releases, as they won't be getting many new adopters and some early adopters are leaving.
Perhaps the cost of making the discs won't offset the profit they make from selling them? Plus, I can't see them continuing to worry about getting catalog titles out the door in the future, likely just day and date stuff. I mean each will probably only have one major release every two months that is a "must Buy" title. Can they afford to make those HD-DVDs and actually make a profit on them?
I mean the best HD-DVD title will probably be lucky to crack the 100,000 barrier now. Granted that is around 2 mil at $20 a pop, but that 2 mil isn't all profit. They probably don't make more than half off that after all the marketing, promotions, development, pressing, and points to the various actors, directors, etc.
Might make more sense for them to just not release anything, thus bringing HD-DVD to the end sooner and enabling them to go over to Blu-Ray easier and without paying the HD-DVD group anything.

If that's the case, then why bother putting out anything in HD to begin with?
This is how I see it going down.
Both Paramount and Universal are weighing their options. Paramount would have to buy out their contract in order to product BD. Universal seems to have some sort of fued with Sony, so they could take it all a little more personally.
Either way, both studios will most likely go purple at some point in time. Then X months down the road, go blu permanently.
I do believe you are correct about catalogue titles... unless they were previously announced, there will be no more HD DVD cat titles.
As for the 100,000 mark, I doubt any HDM disk will hit that again until after the summer blockbusters are released (I Am Legend might do it if Warner does a purple release).

I assume this was in reference to my post.
You make a good point about the HD media......it would seem like it was pointless in the first place. I guess I assume there were some arrangements made to which the studios agreed to releace a certain amount of movies or something like that? Not really sure I guess. I mean Sony makes sense, since they want the format to take off as the owner, but the others not so much.
Universal is currently owned by NBC, so I have no idea why they would hate Sony. The point you make about Paramount having to buy out there contract is why I said they might not release anything. If HD-DVD is dead, then they probably wouldn't have to pay. Though I suppose Toshiba will continue to support it for at least another year.
You are probably right with how much of it will go. If Paramount leaves, I assume that Universal won't stubbornly stay with HD-DVD just to spite Sony. That would be pretty dumb, but I could see where they just decide to not release any Blu-Ray movies. There was a major studio that took forever to start releasing DVDs back in the day, if I remember correctly.
I forgot that I Am Legend would be on Blu-Ray now or at least could be. That rocks!! I bet that will easily do 100,000. That was a good movie and will look great in HD.
What other Warner movies could be coming out on Blu-Ray in the future now that were a big deal in the theater?

In an early announce to retailers, Fox has set an April Blu-ray debut for the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic 'Predator.'
One of the "monster" franchises of the '80s (along with the 'Alien' series), the original 'Predator' has long been on the wishlish of early adopters for high-def release. Now Fox has heeded the call to hunt, setting an April 15 street date for the Blu-ray.
With a full press announcement still due in the coming days, there are no supplemental details yet available, but we'll keep you posted.
Tech specs are set to include 1080p video and audio flavors in DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround and Dolby Digital 4.0 Surround, plus a French Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo dub.

Perhaps some of the bigger name titles... both sides released their fair share of catalogue titles already.
I think for now, studios are playing a bit of a guessing game as to what will cost them the least to produce, but sell well enough to warrant an HD transfer.

More rumoring via FormatWarCentral:
Rumors just won't stop about the future of HD DVD, and while we try not to post all of them, some seem too believable to pass up. Our friend Bill Hunt, at the Digital Bits, -- still waiting on those permalinks, Bill -- is reporting that his "second to none" sources informed him that both Universal and Paramount are in the process of going blu. But don't bother asking 'em, because the same contracts that prevent them from switching now, prevent them from confirming the rumor. In addition, Bills sources tell him that while Paramount could make an announcement any day now, Universal's won't come until February -- at the earliest -- because "their contract period with the HD-DVD camp expires at the end of January."

the widescreen framing on this movie really bothers me from the screenshots I have seen..... too much information is lost from the top and bottom of the frame that I consider part of the shot
nice to get the unrated version (though those few seconds really have no impact on the movie itself) but I still haven't chose to upgrade from sd due to the transfer

Daily Variety has confirmed that Universal's commitment to backing HD DVD exclusively has ended. And Paramount has an escape clause in its HD DVD contract allowing it to release pics on Blu-ray after Warner Bros.' decision to back that format exclusively.

All part of their semi-secret plan to help kill off the format and get out of their deal without paying. Delay, cancel, delay until Universal leaves as well. Then just stop putting out media all together until HD-DVD gives up. No way are they going to support the format all on their own. This will get really interesting if Universal really can leave at the end of the month.
I hope that both studios will be working on getting out previously HD-DVD exclusive titles in Blu-ray as soon as possible. I'd love to have Transformers in Blu-ray as well as a couple other movies I'm sure. I can never remember what is made by what studios. :o

Batman Begins should arrive on BD just before The Dark Knight arrives in theatres. V for Vendetta will probably arrive shortly as well.
As for Lucky Number Slevin, I wouldn't count on it or any other Weinstein title coming out in either format for a very long time. Supposedly Weinstein wants more money from either side to produce HDM and that's certainly not going to happen now.

Like you said, who knows what they will do tomorrow. All these statements from CEOs are 95% garbage and marketing spin anyway. I'll spin that to read that they are "currently supporting the HD-DVD format", but it doesn't say they are "exclusive" any more and that they won't support Blu-ray.
I mean Sony denided for months that they were dropping the price of the PS3 the first time, even though there was a CC ad with the new price flying around and everyone and their mom knew the price was going down. Then they come out a few days before the sale starts and announce the price drop.

Oddly I am going to Vegas in April as well. April 7-10th.
I don't know what the PS3 is in Canada, but it is $399 or $499 here depending on the model. Why don't you just order one online? I just posted a link to a decent deal on the Dell web site one page back. Plus, then you won't have to have it flown back on the plane. I imagine that being a pain to get on the plane as a carry-on and I wouldn't trust them to handle it as regular baggage.

Your optimum viewing distance for a 19" tv will be between 3 and 4 feet away... so yes, you should see a difference with an upconverting player.
Although buy it from a place with a good return policy, just in case you don't like the results. Lower end upscalers don't always give the best results.

Well, in one ofthe 300 articles posted on this the last few days, I thought I read something that Universal's contract expired at the end of the month. Perhaps, they have to wait until then??
That would still make their statement to Variety correct, as "current" would be now until the end of the month. I'm not particularly sure what benefit they would get from announcing it later as opposed to now, other than being contractually obligated. Who knows why these companies do what they do anyway.
I mean it is only a matter of time. There is no reason them for them to not at least support both at some point soon. Maybe they do that longer than people assume.

Hey everyone,
I have been pondering the idea of starting my own high def web site. Sort of like highdefdigest.com. Since I work a full time job and this would be a side thing I was wondering if anyone would like to help write reviews and articles etc. I was hoping to get like 5 or 6 people so that no one person had to write a bunch of reviews. I haven't really started making the site yet, but I have a good idea of what it could be. I am just going to see how many people I can get to help generate content for the site before I make it. If you like the idea just PM me or drop a post in this thread. I check it pretty often. If I get enough interest I will give more details about the site.:)

If I was any good at writing reviews, I'd be more than happy to help you out sobentyo... but alas, but writing skills just aren't that great.
Just my 2 cents, but there's already a pile of websites out there that cover HD now... unless you have some sort of catch or gimmick, it might not be worth your time.

I might be interested in chipping in some reviews. I don't really have any experience with it, but I could certainly give the general everyman's opinion on movies.

Blu-ray probably wont fail, although it probably wont be mainstream for a while. It most likely will never over take DVD, but who knows as more and more people get HD tvs. We shall see what the future holds. I know after just watching 2 HD-DVDs so far it is tough to go back and watch regular dvds.

if someone doesn't mind taking on an extra credit card the Sony card offer gets you $100 credit with purchase of the PS3
I know this has been posted before but I believe the past offers had wording to suggest Sony Store/sonystyle purchases only ... it appears this promo is open towards purchases at ANY authorized retailer
so one could pretty much get this [40 GB] for $299 from Amazon (no tax + free shipping)

No kidding, I can't believe how expensive being an HD buff in Canada has to be.
Freaking $39.99 plus taxes for HD-DVD combo discs
$32.99 and up plus taxes for Blu-Ray movies
So if I bought Shoot'em Up on Blu-Ray and The Kingdom on HD-DVD at Futureshop while living in BC, I would have to pay 5% GST plus 7% PST making it a grand total of $83.98 CAD. I could've already purchased 4 to 5 Hi-Def titles already.
Another great comparison is that Prison Break Season 1 is $87.99 plus taxes at Future Shop which is roughly $100 CAD
I just bought it on eBay for $34 USD shipped brand new. That means the markup on these movies at places like Future Shop and Best Buy is absolutely insane.
Even when I read about new release announcements about Blu-Ray and HD-DVD titles at websites like The Digital Bits and High Def Digest, they announce that the suggested retail is actually $39.99 but nobody in the US actually charges the actual retail price, thats freaking insane when you really think about it.
Today I walked around Future Shop in the Blu-Ray section and then I see a guy holding 2 Blu-Ray titles. Thats probably $70 to $80 right there, for 2 movies. 10 minutes, later he comes back to the Blu-Ray section to put one movie back. He was probably thinking, "naaaah, maybe I should put it back, its too much to purchase 2 movies at one time"
Canadians get the shaft big time when it comes to Hi-Def. Standard DVD buying is not bad though but after going Hi-Def, the only time I buy standard DVDs is when they got them in the bargain bin for like 2 for $10 or $15.
Speaking of ridiculous prices, can you actually believe that the original list price for Miami Vice HD-DVD combo disc is $54.99 CAD plus tax(es)????? I picked up my copy on eBay for $18.
The only time I would pay full retail for Hi-Def at Canadian retail is if its a must have, cannot wait title like 300 or Transformers. 300 is the only Hi-Def movie I ever bought at full retail price at $32.99 plus taxes but it was fully worth it. I have never heard a better sounding Blu-Ray movie than 300.

Haven't tried getting movies online, but one of the things that has helped me is HMV's 2/$50 sales, as it's easier (for me, at least) to justify paying $25 per HD DVD.

hey yo-- how bad is it to watch 4:3 on a recent (i bought it six months ago) panny plasma? I know it stretches the image to fill the space, but that bugs the crap out of me. but i gote the shield on dvd, and wanted to start watching the series. so how bad is it?
PrimeBane

Depends on the plasma... but providing you're not going to watch 4:3 on it for 50 hours straight you should be just fine to go back if the stretched image isn't your thing. :)

Can't you set the picture to standard? That's what I've set both my TVs for when I watch cable. It makes the picture a little smaller and gives you the sidebars, but I can't stand the sideways stretching.
PrimeBane

Yes, but it is recommended that for any new plasma tv to watch any 4:3 programming in stretch mode for at least the first 100 hours to break in the set.
I've read that this isn't always necessary, but when you pay that much for a tv, what's 100 hours?

The only place I knew that sold the Sony 910 here was Best Buy and they priced it at $650. But I went to a place called Audio Warehouse for the first time and they had it on sale for $400 so I grabbed one.
I ended up deciding on a 5.1 Precision Acoustics speaker system which the guy there said they had in stock according to the computer... I paid for them before he looked for them and of course... after that he couldn't find them. He knew my second choice was JBL which I thought sounded better but they were just too much money. Because it was sorta his fault he offered to take $250 off the JBL's or wait until they got more Precision Acoustics in stock. So I took the JBL's. :D

Question for you guys. How do you get the 360 to upconvert dvds? I know it needs an HDMI cable. Do you just put an HDMI cable from the HD-DVD drive to the TV? I mean I already have it connected through the component cables. So if I hook up the HD-DVD drive with HDMI do I still need it to have the system hooked up through the component cables as well?
PrimeBane
01-12-2008, 09:03 PM
No... HDMI will replace your component cables.
And it will be the 360 you connect with HDMI, not the addon. The addon only has USB out. It's basically just a drive that reads the disks. The 360 does all the decoding of the data.
avsfan21
01-12-2008, 09:05 PM
So I am screwed then since I have an old 360 and I dont have any HDMI ports on my 360.

Unless you have a VGA input on your tv, I'm afraid you are.
If you want to go to the trouble of ripping your DVDs, stripping the CSS off and reburning them then the 360 will then upcovert.

Well, if you do end up buying a PS3 sometime in the near future, it will upconvert DVDs... and better than the 360 from what I understand.
Odd you mention this...I just watched my first DVD on my PS3 and it looked awesome. I was very surprised how good it actually looked. Although....I do think the material was perfect for an upconversion, Pixar's "The Incredibles"

You got a 910 and then opted for 5.1......why not get 7.1
Just to save a bit of money for now. I might pick up 2 more speakers later.

Very nice :D
I'm fighting the urge to get a new receiver... I was thinking of getting an Onkyo, but then I was introduced to the Yamaha RXV1800 at highdefdigest.
http://www.yamaha.ca/av/Receivers/RXV1800B.jsp
4 HDMI 1.3a ports, TruHD, DTS Master, 1080p upscaling... *drool*
Problem is it's damn pricey right now... I'm hoping to see a price drop or a great Boxing Day sale next year.
Sounds like a kickass receiver (The Yamaha). Yeah, I was thinking of an Onkyo too, the 705 had 3 HDMI inputs like the 910... problem was the price difference between the two. I'm only using 2 in's but it's nice to have an extra just in case. Now I've got to tear everything apart and put it all back together again. :D

I think animation is the easiest to upconvert... less textures, etc. I noticed the same with Ice Age 2 a while back.

Finally upgrading my audio/video setup a bit. Onkyo TX-SR605 on the way, should have it Wednesday. Upgrading from Onkyo HTS570 HTIB.
Speakers and sub still need to be upgraded bigtime but that's going to have to wait, I want to keep shopping around - not sure of what I want yet or how much I want to spend.

i just watched this last night, and it is spectacular. In a class of it's own.
Watching this movie on blu-ray, too, just makes it that much more evident that high-definition adds an incredible positive dimension to film. It wouldn't be anything near the same experience on DVD.

You have the same HTIB as I do. I been going back and forth on the Onkyo 605 and 805 then upgrading my speakers to Polk..

Cool. I definitely want some nice speakers but I'll admit I don't know much about them and what to look for. I like to do a lot of research before I buy stuff like that. I do know that I want an SVS cylinder subwoofer though but they're so expensive.

I keep thinking about getting a new receiver as well. I have a Kenwood 5.1 HTIB right now that is like 7 years old. It gets the job done though, so I have trouble with spending $500+ on a new 7.1 system. My current one supports DD and DTS and I have hookups for all my audio.
Just hard to make myself pay to upgrade when I'm not really sure how much more I'll get out of it.

Went to BB today and noticed that the A-30's were marked to $199 and the A-3's were $149. Not sure if its like that at your BB's. I picked up a Samsung BD-P1400 for $149.99. They had a sale for 50% off all open box items, did I get a good deal on it? I dont know much about the SAL BD players.
