Went to BB today and noticed that the A-30's were marked to $199 and the A-3's were $149. Not sure if its like that at your BB's. I picked up a Samsung BD-P1400 for $149.99. They had a sale for 50% off all open box items, did I get a good deal on it? I dont know much about the SAL BD players.
I heard the 1400 is not a good player at all.
Toshiba lowered the prices on all their player.
Recieved the movies. Thanks again

I did buy the extra warranty for it, so if I don't get the results I want, I will just brick the player and get a PS3 or wait for the 5500 duel player.

What is the best deal (other then PS3) for a Blu-Ray player? Looking to get one for my parents TV and they would have no need for a PS3 lol.

Wow...according to highdefdigest's count, Universal has 2 new HD DVDs announced through April.
(4 total but 2 are non-combo reissues). And the two new ones are Fletch and The Brave One.
Hate to say it, but the format mine as well be dead if the so-called leading studio doesn't step it up immediately.

If you recall last year, Universal didn't announce any titles until late January, early February.
Although I wouldn't be surprised to see them abandon catalogue titles and just release day and date until B-day arrives.

What a difference going from a 7 year old HTIB hooked up through composite to a receiver through HDMI is. The HDMI and component switching works flawlessly. For a while I could get audio but no video from the PS3, I turned off the projector and PS3, rebooted and it's been working since then.
Another cool thing about this receiver is the ability to rename the inputs.. like change Video 2 to Blu-ray etc.
I'm just glad I can finally watch Die Hard in HD! (Once I get a copy that is :D)

Has anyone ordered movies on eBay on the week of Christmas and still haven't recieved their stuff yet?
I purchased Babel and Troy on Blu-Ray from 2 different eBay dealers and I still haven't recieved them. They will follow through in the event it doesn't show up but just wondering if anyone else has gotten delays due to the busy holiday rush and post offices being backed up or something.
By the way, has anybody actually seen any porn on HD-DVD? Because most porn is filmed in amateur home video style, I wonder how good it actually looks.
I was tempted to buy Pirates on Blu-Ray (the only adult film on Blu-Ray) but wanted to hear some reviews about the video and audio quality. LOL! Actually I'm serious.

I'm an idiot. Realized yesterday that I won't be able to hook up the passive subwoofer that I have now with my Onkyo HTIB to the new Onkyo receiver that's on it's way. So yesterday I ordered a whole new 5.1 JBL speaker system (SCS 500.5) with a powered active sub and it'll be an upgrade to the center and the satellites as well over what I have now. It's still pending credit review at TigerDirect though, probably won't go through :(

I recently got all the Harry Potters on Blu Ray (mostly thanks to the last Amazon BOGO) and I noticed after watching Goblet of fire on Blu, it came on HBO HD the next day.
immediately you notice that the HBO cut made it fill the entire screen, while the BD of course has the extra wide presentation resulting in the black bars on the top and bottom.
Anyways, it seemed to me that the HBO version had better picture quality than my Blu Ray. Am I just seeing things or does having the whole screen filled make it seem that way or did Warner just have a lesser transfer to Blu?

this is the tv me and my wife are leaning towards.
What do you guys think/know about it?
I've also noticed it's $100 cheaper on amazon, but with shipping would pry actually end up being pretty close. Will circuit City price match to amazon? Is circuit city worth buying from?
When I do buy my tv, do I buy the protection plan with it through circuit city? (or best buy if i can get it tthere.) Best buy and circuit city are about all I have around me.
One last question :) The blur. Is it horribly noticeable. i noticed on one of the reviews for this tv it's mentioned but i only really saw it on one review. I haven't noticed it on anything in store so i don't think it'd bother me much.

Most of the time Amazon I thought was free shipping over $25.00
Its a good TV. You will have to replace bulbs in it every 2 - 3 years
Motion Blur on that set is bad. When it comes to watching sports its very hard to do in SD. In HD its alot better but still noticable.

I wouldn't get this anyway. The original one is so much better. You don't have to attach anything to your PS3 and and has a lot more options like, angles, audio options, subtitles, slow mo fwd&rwd, etc. It's much better for your buck.

The only time Amazon doesnt have free shipping over 25.00 is when the irm is coming directly from a third party. That was the case when i bought my Onkyo Receiver thru them.

I find it hillarious that I Am Legend comes out on Blu-ray before HD-DVD. Shows that Warner is more interested in supporting Blu-ray than HD-DVD in the remaining days. Also, shows they have been working on the Blu-ray release ahead of time, or else it wouldn't really be ready on day and date.
Sadly, I think my wife has banned me from buying this movie. She didn't like a certain part and was very upset by it.

Sony's E3000 line is the new line of RPTV, if you could I would suggest the A3000 line, the SXRD technology is a lot better it is noticeable, I used to sell those things all the time...as far as a service plan the only thing I believe that is not covered is a bulb, however at CC they cover you for 1 BULB, but you are really paying for it when you buy the service plan...even though I do not work for them anymore Sony Style online you can purchase a service plan and a bulb for a lot less than you would from CC (Sony doesn't cover the bulb)

Actually speculation on this is 2 fold:
1. The deal with the BDA requires them to release the BD version first.
2. Warner doesn't want to be embarassed should the HD DVD version outsell the BD version.
Make no mistake, Warner would have preferred to go HD DVD (and would have if Fox hadn't backed out at the last minute), but for the good of mass adoption decided to go Blu.

Yeah, there is no question if they stayed neutral they would come out at the same time.
I also read that Warner has an out clause if certain disc sales numbers aren't met - I really like the fact that tosh isn't just throwing in the towel, they are still going for mass adoption with the cheap player prices. As long as they have uni/para in their corner it's far from over.

you wouldn't notice blur that much on an RPTV, their response time is fantastic, the A3000 has your 120hz which I would turn off anyway, I just prefer the SXRD over the the 3LCD, as far as the first 3 Saw movies I do own them and I do not watch them so shoot a pm over

Seems like no one wants to give up or pick a format. Why don't all the studios make the movies in both formats, and let those who have Blu-Ray and those who have HD-DVD buy and collect the ones they want. If either one bows out, the only real losers are gonna be us consumers, who have already purchased players, game machines and software to entertain us. I mean hardly anyone has a BetaMax machine, and probably in the next couple of years no one will have a VHS. I remember the 1st time I went to buy a VHS player with Hi-Fi sound and they were $1000 to start. Now who won when DVD's came out? NOT US, alot of people were out 1000's of dollars on a VHS/VCR and all those movies.
I know I just got a blu ray player for xmas, and I have a few movies already. And I will be p i dbl ss ed off, if it goes under!
As I'm sure those with HD DVD will be too. And there are lots movies I would like to have that I can't simply because we have to have 2 formats?? Well I for one cannot afford both players. Looking back It seems alot easier to just buy the DVD's and the only thing I had to worry about was Full or Wide screen...

Yep, that's why I want that one. Still no luck finding one locally and I hate ordering online for this kind of stuff.
Best Buy Canada has a rack of about 20 different titled Blu-rays... Buy 2, get $10 off so I picked up First Blood and Dawn of the Dead original.
Also picked up
Total Recall BD
Young Guns BD
Twilight Zone HD DVD
I posted back a few pages my HD DVD 5 free offer was refused because I sent in a photocopy instead of the original UPC. I actually threw out the box I guess... which I don't remember doing but whatever. Anyway I called them yesterday and the dude there told me he'll force the order through and I'll still get them... thought that was pretty decent of them.
Also sent away for my 5 free BD's

Full Metal Jacket (wanted the new version but the other 2 options I already own on HD DVD)

Not if you're going to put any serious time video gaming on it. I would highly suggest a model with a LED light source as opposed to the standard lamp, it gets really expensive after a while to continuously have to pump $200 into your television( one every 1-1/2 to 2 years.)

Talk to anyone that installs... nothing compares to a plasma's picture. Rear projection is fine, but the picture tends to be dark and the viewing angles are brutal.

I have, I used to have a plasma but traded over to a Mitsubishi DLP because the picture was a great deal smoother. Plasma is like the gray goose of the television world, it's not better it's just flashier and endorsed by MTV.
as far as burn in goes, I'm currently in the market for a new television and have been reading quite a few manuals, all the plasma ones still say keep video gaming under X. amount of hours a week due to burn in, although in practice it may not be a big deal anymore I still don't like those odds on something that expensive.

I'm pretty certain the titles plugged into a circular for next week were predetermined well before the Warner announcement
These ads/solicitations are put together weeks in advance
there just aren't enough titles out there right now to be able to do much new and exciting..... I'm sure Amazon will continue to try and offer the best discount/BOGO type deals as they seem to be the beneficiary of the HDM sales since they can be a lot less restrictive than b&m when it comes to space

as far as burn in goes, I'm currently in the market for a new television and have been reading quite a few manuals, all the plasma ones still say keep video gaming under X. amount of hours a week due to burn in, although in practice it may not be a big deal anymore I still don't like those odds on something that expensive.
DLP does not hold a candle to a Plasma Sorry...
Plasma's are alot better. Better blacks, better viewing angle, Better overall PQ and no bulbs to replace every 2 - 3 years.
I have had my plasma for over 5 years with ZERO burn in issue's while gaming. So I know the current one's are just that much better.
Also its not really Burn in but more image retention which goes away.

Got the Onkyo 605 and my new JBL speakers yesterday, dramatic improvement over the old Onkyo HTIB!! I'll try to take pictures tonight, I've still got bags and boxes all over the LR. I missed signing for the receiver from the UPS guy on Tues. so, of course, I called in sick to work yesterday (Oooh my stomach ;) ) to sign for it and the speakers which also came yesterday. Spent a couple hours hooking everything up, took a couple trips to Menard's to fashion some speaker stands together for the fronts and get screws/anchors to mount the rears on the wall.
I'm actually still waiting for an HDMI cable from Monoprice to really get the most out of the system so hopefully that comes today, I need to order another one too actually - one for the DirecTV HD-DVR, one for the A2.

I have to agree with all the plasma supports. Last year we did alot of research and viewing of display models. Were initially were looking at rear projections because you can get alot of TV for the money. When we saw the viewing angles (even on the SXRDs) and lack of brightness, we said no.
Then it was between LCD or Plasma and we decided Plasma. From everything we looked and all the reviews we read, the plasma's color was much richer and the contrast ratio for blacks we so much better. We ended up with the 50" Pioneer Plasma and anyone that comes over that has any other HDTV technology is amazed at our picture quality and how much nicer it is.

What's the diff in these two tvs?

i'm leaning towards the first one of these two, and actually thinking maybe that one instead of the sony.
Sorry to keep bothering you guys :) This is a huge purchase for us and I want to get it right.
I have a Sony A2000 and MUCH preferred it over the Samsung when I was looking at TVs. I'm not a fan of DLP technology. I don't think it produces a very good picture overall. It doesn't render 1080p either. It fakes out the resolution using wobulation.
If I had the opportunity now, I would probably buy a plasma. At the time I bought my TV, I couldn't get a 1080p plasma over 50" in my price range.

Thank you for providing technical specs as opposed to saying it is so simply because I say it is so (like some other board members:rolleyes:).
one thing I keep coming back to though, and this is probably my viewing preference, is the clarity of picture. It has been my experience that DLP produces a much smoother moving image then plasma, I know this is due to warbling but that seems to work in its favor. even last year's high-end plasmas produce a noticeable amount of digital static, I am often at Circuit City or Best Buy and while viewing the plasmas think to myself Ugh it doesn't look as organic as I would like. I certainly will not debate plasma has a brighter image, but that hasn't been as big an issue to me as clarity.
As far as viewing angle goes, My Mitsubishi can be seen from anywhere in the room that would be comfortable to sit and watch a movie, but I have seen other sets where if you're not dead on you lose the whole picture, so I think that one's on a TV by TV bases.
I am in the market currently for a new TV and open to being swayed, so ( and this goes out to anyone here) what in your opinion is the best plasma TV on the market right now, and keep in mind that I often have movie night (5 to 10 people) at my house so I like to watch things big, But have no intention of spending as much as car.

latonthesnake: One thing I have found in the last few years is that people tend to view these tvs differently. So while plasma does tend to give the best viewing experience for most, that's not always true for the rest. The best thing you can do is view the tvs for yourself in store and at friends and family (providing they own one) and make your own decision. If you find RPtvs look the best to you, then buy that. :) The most important thing for anyone buying an HDtv is to be happy with their purchase.
As for plasmas, if you can afford one, the first ones to look at will always be the Pioneers. Especially the Kuro line. If you find them to be too pricey, Panasonic is generally your next best bet followed by Samsung.
Since you have movie nights often, you might want to consider looking at an HD projector. If you don't mind a 720p resolution, there are many good quality LCD and DLP projectors hovering around the $1000 mark (less if on sale). Unfotunately they do come with their own unique problems (bulb life being the biggest) and you'll want to buy a screen in time, but there is a certain "wow" factor in watching a movie in HD on a 100" screen. :D

Nothing about any of the posts I made would imply anything other than fact that I did research it myself. as of late I've been reading a great deal of technical websites as well as downloading TV manuals to see the ins and outs of the sets that I'm considering.
If you think one is better and you're going to state it as an absolute fact, it would help better a civilized conversation to back up why.
I myself am fairly tech savvy, but I'm willing to listen to the opinions of others, and I was under the impression that this particular thread was a HD discussion jumping off point.
The nice thing about a web board is that you can dip into the knowledge base of people all across the world, thus extending your own.

Last week's sales numbers. Ouch... :D
C'mon Universal and Paramount, the writing is on the wall. You're backing a failed format. Consumers have spoken.
Washington, D.C. (January 17, 2008) -- If this were a boxing match, HD DVD was just knocked down.
Again.
Home Media Magazine reports that Blu-ray last week captured 85 percent of high-def disc sales compared to HD DVD's 15 percent.
Blu-ray discs have consistently outsold HD DVD by a 2-1 margin for the last year, but last week's numbers reflect the greatest disparity yet in the format war.
Even worse for HD DVD, Home Media Magazine writes that the top 10 high-def disc sellers were all Blu-ray. The best-selling HD DVD, The Kingdom, sold just 10 percent as many discs as the best-selling Blu-ray title, 3:10 to Yuma.
The numbers are the first indicator of the damage done to HD DVD by Warner Bros' endorsement of Blu-ray on January 4.
The Warner decision gave Blu-ray a 5-2 'major studio' advantage over HD DVD and prompted widespread speculation that HD DVD can't survive the format war.
Despite HD DVD woes, Paramount and Universal, which still back the format exclusively, are expected to soon announce several new releases.

I did back it why.. I have researched more TV's and installed more dang TV's then I ever wanted to. Just because I didnt post a link doesnt mean its not fact . If a link will help you determine whats fact and what is not good luck.
This was you posted:
Thank you for providing technical specs as opposed to saying it is so simply because I say it is so (like some other board members:rolleyes:).
I just found that funny to say just because someone didnt post a link....
You will find a million other links probably saying DLP is better then Plasma's. And vise versa my point is first hand knowledge is more important then what a website has to say.
I have been around TV's a very long time and I posted IMO plasma's are better because of my first hand knowledge of all TV's.
Anyway good luck with your research. All I can say is go to as many stores and hook up as many components as they will let you, play with the settings.

sorry...I should say.....FULL HD...is that better
No because there is always something better like 1440P on the horizon..
Full HD would mean thats it nothing more its FULL which is not true.
I think the definition of "Full HD" being 1080p started with PS3 hype and then extended to acceptance by other manufacturers

This is in no way trying to spark an argument, but I can understand things on a deeper level than this TV am better. It would have been helpful to have some comparative technical specs attached to a blanket statement, and if your as into the HD market as you say you are it's always nice to hear it from the horses mouth that's all.
And no I don't need links to everything but at least it was a start.

despite my love for both formats, I honestly....honestly cannot understand why HD DVD is still around.
They've done nothing since the Warner announcement. With the exception of MAYBE a handful of titles, it's a crappy or non-existent release schedule through like June. No big guns, no reason for people to buy in at this point. Lower player prices are worthless at this point.
If HD DVD wants to survive, Toshiba needs to get Universal and Paramount to release new movies on HD DVD/DVD combo only and price it THE SAME as DVD. Otherwise, they're done, son.
Either crap or get off the pot

Well they have slashed player prices - it's not much, but what else can they do at this point - I agree though, they need to put the screws to the studios that still support the format to put out some more catalog titles.
On another note, I cannot wait for American Gangster and I'll probably also pick up Into the Wild, but outside of that - there isn't much I'll picking up for exclusive hd dvd titles (I'll still probably buy the warner titles in red as well) but it's pretty bleak looking in terms of releases.

O.T., sorta - If you have DirecTV you can now schedule your DVR while you're away. The feature is a little wonky still today but I think it's cool as hell. There's a mobile app/site for it too - m.directv.com
Being able to record a show at my house while I'm away at work and I can do it from iPod Touch - come on - that's pretty damn cool.

Can anyone confirm the American Gangster HD-DVD is the theatrical cut or the extended cut?
I'm tired of Hi-Def releases only having the theatrical cut of the film.
Its dumb cuz alot of times the Extended Edition / Director's Cut is only available on DVD and the HD-DVD only features the Theatrical Cut.
For example, Enemy of the State, Con Air, Gone in 60 Seconds, Black Hawk Down, Crimson Tide, Tears of the Sun, King Kong, all their extended editions are available on Standard DVD. But their Hi-Def counter parts only feature the theatrical cut. It kinda blows because you will never get the extended version on Hi-Def.
So I'm worried that, as a collector, I would have to double dip on American Gangster

Universal's American Gangster coming to HD DVD - HD DVD/DVD Combo, Dolby Digital PLUS 5.1 and the Extended Cut is only on the DVD version. Way to phone it in Universal. Jump to Blu-ray and all 3 of those problems would be fixed easily.

American Gangster really wasn't that great anyway. I know I'm in the minority, but I thought it was a C+ all around movie. Denzel did the same schtick he always does (chest thumping apparently = great acting).
Dont' get me wrong, Denzel is amazing, but he didn't show me anything new in this movie. Russell Crowe's character was weak. There was no climax.
Disappointing. Even more disappointing is that this is all Universal's got for HD DVD right now.

Lol - didn't TF win best audio of the year with DD+ 5.1 from the same place you are getting that info from?
Edit: I also don't see the combo as a problem, they probably chose to do that - same as keeping the extended cut off of the hd dvd side. There are plenty of movies that are longer (i.e. Troy DC).
How is that unrated cut of DH4 on blu?
