Right....

And Sony wasn't going to drop the price of the PS3.
And Paramount didn't receive any sort of payout to go HD DVD exclusive.

It may not have been exactly $500 mil, but Warner did get something in exchange for it's exclusivity from the BDA... as did Fox.

Speculate all you want but there are no facts to back it up with. Warner even said themselves there was no payoff. Now Paramount/Dreamworks on the other hand..... ;)

Don't forget Disney - They helped develop hd dvd interactive features (which scream disney) and then up and dropped the format in the middle of the night.

It's all part of the game - but to imply that blu is winning because it is a better format is lunacy.

paramount and dreamworks also said there was no payout........... so there are no "facts" since we are going off what studio heads say.

Common sense should tell you any exclusive studio, on either side, was paid off in some way/shape/form.

Truthfully, Disney was never behind HD DVD just HDi... I believe (although I'm not 100% on this) they they were also part of VC-1. HDi could have easily been a spec on BD if not for the battle MS and Sony are having.

Disney is a smart company and were keeping their options open should HD DVD had ever emerged the winner.

highly unlikely. This isn't the VHS or DVD age....anything you want is available free on the Internet. I'm all for great quality cooch, but I wouldn't pay a dime for porn anymore.

Plus, a lot of the porn starlettes don't like the idea of high def, as it's a bit too revealing of their age and various imperfections in their skin.

I'm at 40 Hi-Def titles right now in my collection and I did 90% of my purchases on eBay and so far so good.

I got some delivery delays though. A title that was shipped on Dec 23 2007 arrived on Jan 17, 2008 and another that was shipped on Dec 29, 2007 arrived on Jan 18, 2008.

I guess postal services were backed up due to the busy holiday rush, but other than that, everything is just perfect. *touch wood*

No because there is always something better like 1440P on the horizon..

Full HD would mean thats it nothing more its FULL which is not true.

I think the definition of "Full HD" being 1080p started with PS3 hype and then extended to acceptance by other manufacturers

you can say that about anything..but as of right now Full HD is the 1920x1080 "progressive scan" HDTV format. Also called "Full HD" "True HD" and "Ultra HD," 1080p provides the highest resolution in the HDTV standard...it doesn't matter how many TV's you hooked up for friends and family...back to the original answer...as of RIGHT NOW there is no Plasma TV on the market under 50" that produces "Full HD"....PERIOD...but don't worry you probably think Bose is Hi-Fi also...;)

There's nothing wrong with wanting Bose, if it truly is what you want. I have a Bose system in my Living Room and I love it. I've had it for 6 years. Granted, I got a new system at cost (around 50-60% off) when my then-GF worked at Circuit City... LOL, but I still love it!

It's the people who are convinced that Bose is the absolute best audio in the world without EVER hearing it and deciding for themselves that are annoying. Bose has amazing marketing and they use a high price point as a way to back up their claims. Can't really argue it if it works for them.

I never said its a myth or not better then 720P. If you have a 100" screen then sure you will see the benefits of 1080P or if you are right on top of the TV.

I can show you many 720P plasma's that blow away 1080P lcd sets. So I guess your argument about the Best picture quality is 1920x1080p in an HDTV doesnt hold water.

So explain to me how a 720P plasma can put out a better pic then a 1080P lcd set?

Here is an interesting quote

"Hitachi uses the term “Full HD” to refer to a resolution of 1920 x 1080, regardless of whether the TV displays the image in interlaced or progressive mode"

Dont let Sbrooks hear you say that...

I agree when I take people to look and purchase a TV I redo all the settings and go from there. Its a long process but I want to make sure they know what they are getting because its not cheap.

I always here people trying to return their TV because it all their channels to not look like they did in the store.

Most people have no clue that all they run is an HD loop and around here we only have like 6 - 8 channels in HD.

so when they start watcing SD cable its a shock..

Been nothing for deals since the big announcement. Hopefully something comes up soon. Im tired of not buying anything lol. Got Breach and Knocked Up HD-DVD's last week. Watched Knocked Up and didnt like it. So I sold it off on here. Havent watched Breach yet. I know its a great movie as Ive seen it just not in HD yet. Other then that havent been able to buy anything. I have my eye on a few movies on ebay right now though. Hoping to grab a few cheap from the same guy to save on shipping.

Got Hulk, Italian Job, Swordfish, Darkman and they sent me Firewall instead of The Frighteners.

Yeah, I wonder if it's due to the big announcement, or just coincidental with the big announcement. IceRat already alluded to the fact that the BB/CC circulars are produced way in advance, so I don't know if the WB announcement would have hit them by now yet.

I'm more inclined to think it's the post-holiday lull moreso than anything else. I think everyone blew out their collective deals pre-xmas for gifts and post-xmas for gift cards already. We're just sitting in a lull right now.

there are still deals, they're just garbage in comparison. If Amazon/Best Buy/blu-ray want my money for catalog titles in the future...it'll be through BOGO exclusively. Sorry you can't throw those out like they're candy to draw me in and then cut them off...if they dry up I'll just go to ebay.

Holy crap, I lucked out at Best Buy today... I actually found the Jack Ryan Collection on HD DVD. I was like nawwww... that's gotta be an empty box or a display or something but it was the real deal. I bought the **** out of it. :D

Also picked up at various places...

The Devil's Rejects BD
House 1000K BD
Bad Santa BD
King of New York BD
Sunshine BD
Scary Movie BD
Evil Dead 2 BD
Jay & Silent Bob BD
War BD
Reservoir Dogs BD
King Arthur BD
Pan's Labyrinth HD DVD

Now, does anyone know if the Intec PS3 remote uses IR or Bluetooth? It does have a USB connector so that's why I bought it ($20 - BB... small, simple design) in hopes I could program it for the Harmony 880. I'm going to research it before I open but was wondering if anyone in here knew.

I finally got around to setting up my 880 today.

Unfortunately, I think it screwed up my setup for my 628 upstairs, but I'll fix that another day.

Two problems I ran into.

1. It didn't recognize my satellite box, so it had to learn the commands.
2. I had to manually go in and set all the controls for the BlueWave remote to work properly. I wish I could turn the damn thing on and off.

I've had great success off of ebay - got the spiderman trilogy bluray brand new and sealed for $24 dlvd a week or two ago and have scored some other good deals. As with anything on ebay, just look at their feedback and make sure it is good.

High def Digest forums b/s/t boards are another good place to score cheap movies - same deal though, make sure they have good feedback.

Just finished watching a couple movies today.

Simpsons blu-ray. Good, cute movie, was about what I remember in the theaters. PQ was good, hard to screw up a cartoon.

Hollowman blu-ray. First time I'd seen this since I saw it in the theater, and enjoyed it just as much. It's surprising how well the effects stand up even today. PQ was pretty strong through most of the movie, a few awkwardly hazy scenes, just a couple and only for 10 seconds or so, but they seemed so unnecessary. Anyway, PQ was an 8.3/10.

Not only for the prices, but the fact that everyone who bit on the BOGOs probably already has what they want.

The PS3 in my opinion is still the best blu-ray player on the market. Don't let the fact that it's a videogame machine sway you. It's pretty obvious Sony has little interest in pushing it's success as a gaming device.

Thing is though CoachB, if I spend $300-$400 on a BD player, it better damn well be able to play everything to it's full capability now and in the future... otherwise you don't get my money.

Now if you're happy with the movie playing in HD with HD sound, then anyone of these players will work just fine. :) If you want a little more and want to be able to take advantage of the next gen movie experience, then these "obsolete" players just don't do the trick. :(

Yeah, it's pretty sad - blu boys have gotten very arrogant lately, last I checked hd dvd wasn't dead. It sure looks bleak, but tosh isn't just rolling over and as long as there are a few exlcusive studios then it isn't over. Fanboys should look back to last year, hd dvd was "dead" a few times then as well - but I've come to the conclusion that a good majority of people that are posting on those boards are more in love with their format rather than hi def movies.

I think you're confusing HDMI and the BD profiles.

The BD profiles (the latest players are profile 1.1) determine what can be done on the BD player (ie PIP, internet connectivity, etc).

I think most of them just like to be jerks and hide behind the Internet. They were probably all the PS2 fanboys, or Apple fanboys....you're right, it probably doesn't even matter about the product.

burngwngs

there's a problem with the original remote?

PrimeBane
01-22-2008, 10:41 AM
No... but if you own a universal remote, like many HT owners do, you can't control the PS3 with it directly. You at least need a USB IR piece and even then you can't power on and off the PS3.

With this new solution, you mod your PS3 BT remote with an IR receiver that will have the BT remote send signals to the PS3, including being able to turn it on. :)

The reason "could" be 2 fold:

1. They haven't had a lot of luck getting the 100 GB and 200 GB to work well enough (they had a hell of a time getting the 50 GB disks going and yields were horrible to begin with).
2. They might not work with the current BD drives, even with a firmware update.

I was under the impression they would be announcing it Monday, but it wouldn't go into effect until later.

And I don't have any PS2 games anyhow, that's why I figured 40gb was my best bet

My wife and I started Saw IV last night after I watched Saw III earlier in the day.

There is a definite style to how these flicks were filmed. Plenty of targeted grain, not as heavy but in some shots a silimar feel to 300, the grain is there but the detail and color seems to almost burst through it.

Saw IV looks really good IMO.

I watched Saw IV on Blu Ray last night also-I was more impressed with the sound then anything. The sound was spooky as hell.

Not exactly, How many different BD players on the market? a bunch. Its sad that you have to buy a gaming machine to get the best BD player on the market. If you want to start spewing all that Blu Propaganda go over to Bluray.com We are all purple here and enjoy our peace

First of all I am also purple and I'm not spewing propaganda. But BD is my preference and everyone here knows that BD is going to win this war (whether they want to admit it or not) if they haven't already. It is what it is.

Why is it sad that the PS3 is the best BD player on the market? Maybe cuz your XBOX add on is a piece of crap?

Also if you're so purple then why the avatar?

I believe he's reffering to the fact that in the year and a half that BD players have been produced, the BDA hasn't been able to put out a stand alone player that even comes close to comparing to the PS3... and that is sad, especially considering the MSRP the slap on those stand alones. There are a few players worth purchasing such as the Panny BD player, but I don't think I'd waste my money on any of the rest.

Of course even the PS3 is not perfect (no DTS Master, no true HDMI 1.3a (thus no streaming HD audio codecs over HDMI to a receiver for decoding), no IR receiver, no discrete channel audio out), but at least it's upgradable for most of those unlike many of the other players on the market.

And the 360 addon works just fine... I don't know why so many people are down on it. :(

I have the 360 add on, and it's been much less of a "piece of crap" than the 3 PS3's I've gone through so far.

But, that's not his point. He didn't even mention the 360 add on, let alone compare it to the PS3. It's a sad statement when out of all the players available for an entire format, the best one for the money is a gaming system. Granted, it's obvious Sony built it as a blu-ray player with gaming functions to insure that their format would sell, but still....when I think of an excellent player of any kind (CD, DVD, BR, HD etc.) my mind should come to some sort of dedicated player...not an effing game console.

SPOILER ALERT

Can someone quickly explain the continuity of Saw IV to me. I thought it started after they did the autopsy on jigsaw....but toward the end you realize it's coming in line with the end of Saw III, which is obviously before the autopsy begins.

Also, why the hell would the detective set up all these things and help jigsaw? Did I miss it, or are we waiting for Saw V on that one?

The movie jumps back and forth in time periods quite a bit.It isnt untill the end that we are brought to current time as its happening.I thought it was really neat how they seamlessly went from one part in the past to the present.Example is when Jigsaws looking out the window at the hospital and you see his ex wife being interegated by the FBI as she tells the tale.Very cool in my opinion.

The cop was pretty much recruited like Jigsaws other followers. He saw the world thru the tainted eyes of a madman and bought into the whole"Life is to be cherished""Earn the right for your life" mentality.

i know it jumped back and forth, as it also was telling jigsaw's earlier story....i just though the beginning scenes were after the autospy, but I guess the "current" storyline was progressing at the same time as Saw III? Kinda like how Supremacy and Ulitmatum overlapped....or am I way off?

Nope, if Sony announces a price cut, you can bet it will be effective immedately. No point in announcing "We are selling the PS3 for $299 starting March 1st.". All that does is stop people from buying the PS3 until then. If you wait and announce the price cut on March 1st, or a couple days before, then you get all those sales at the higher price that you would have lost by announcing it eariler.

Sales flyers are printed about 3 weeks ahead of time. If there is a price cut, you will see it confirmed in one of those before you do from Sony. As of right now, people "think" there will be a price cut around the release of GTA4.

Personally, I don't think that will be the case. I think there is likely to be a price cut after GTA4. Enough people will want to play that game and MGS4 that they will pay $399 for a PS3. Why hurt your own bottom line?

I'd assume a price cut around the time of the TGS (Tokyo Game Show), which is usually in the fall.

BAH!!! Can you post and quote spoilers in a different color that you have to highlight to read? I know it says spoiler, but now I have to skip the last conversation you guys (Jay & GPW) are having because idon't know if it is about SAW or not.

You guys usually have a lot of HD info, so I like to read everything, in case you say something I find valuable or interesting.
