Nope, if Sony announces a price cut, you can bet it will be effective immedately. No point in announcing "We are selling the PS3 for $299 starting March 1st.". All that does is stop people from buying the PS3 until then. If you wait and announce the price cut on March 1st, or a couple days before, then you get all those sales at the higher price that you would have lost by announcing it eariler.
To be fair, the rumor states that the price cut will be announced Jan 28th and implemented Feb 29th... so it could be a new model.

Link? Is it from a reputable source?
I see that a new white model has been approved by the FCC, so it could be related to that. I would assume that a $299 model would be a different SKU with something else removed from it.
20GB hard drive, no SM3 packin, no Wi-Fi?
I can't imagine there would be a straight price cut.
Usually by now (less that a week out) there is a lot more information and confirmed rumors on reputable sites than I seem to be seeing at the moment.

Well, that site says they are shipping any day now and going to be on sale Monday. New items would go on slae Sunday in the US and a new PS3 model would CERTAINLY be in the ads for this week.
Plus, the white PS3 just cleared FCC status this week. Last time the 40GB model cleared FCC status it was 2 months before it came out.
No way a new PS3 hits next week. I won't doubt that a white model is coming. I really doubt it will be reduced in price by $100, when I think people would buy them at $399.
I call shenanigins.

According to internet posters, the Best Buy sterling va store had two pallets of the 40GB PS3 in the first aisle at a manager's special price of just $299. The deal is reportedly only for this store only although who knows if any others will follow suit!

Probably because everyone is scrambling to break the news before everyone else, and they didn't bother to really research the story.
No way a white PS3 that sells for $299 shows up Monday of next week. Just doesn't happen. Like I said earlier, it is obvious a white PS3 is coming.
Actually, I just remembered that the DualShock 3 controller is coming out in spring and was released in Japan in white, so I wouldn't be shocked to see a white PS3 in March/April. That also fits the 2 monthish time table to get something out after the FCC approves it.
I still don't think it will be $299. I think any price drop would happen at E3 (July) or at TGS (Sept).

Should be pulling the trigger on a new LCD in the next week or so.
Out of these, which one would you choose, I'm still researching. I know the Sharps have banding, the Toshis have green push. Still working on the others but I'm curious if you guys have any of these displays or which one you would buy. Tiger is the only choice for vendor, they were dumb enough to give me a credit card there ;) plus their warehouse is local to me and I can pick the set up there. My Tax Refund wasn't so hot this year so the budget is less than $2000 including a stand I'll have to pick up somewhere. Will be used pretty equally for DirecTV HD viewing, XBox 360 playing and HD-DVD movie viewing. This new set will replace an old 57" CRT rear projection set that is just too big for the room.
Let me know if this link works okay, I think it will but I'm not sure.

This is what I was referring to in my previous posts about the new PS3 model coming out. I had seen the ads for next week already and it wasn't in there.
Usually when something like this occurs, there are more leaks that are more reliable than some random blog post. Someone will report a new SKU ringing up at Target, seeing the item in the BB inventory system, or seeing it in the ad flyer.
So far, none of this has occured. Like I said, there is a white PS3 coming and it very well may get announced Monday, but if that is the case, it will go on sale for the same price as the current PS3. No way will Sony announce a price cut a month before the system comes out.

Hey, do any of you in here have Direct-TV? I have WideOpenWest for my cable now, which is fine, but I only get about 12 HD channels. I really like the idea of getting more HD channels, especially for some of the cable channels I watch, like MTV, USA, VH1 and so on.
Trying to see if you guys like the service and if you have any tips for a noob like myself. I've looked and it seems like it will cost me about $200 in startup costs, since I need a HD/DVR box, a DVR box, and a regular box.
I'm thinking of joining around the next NFL season, as they seem to have some pretty good deals around then and I really want to get the Sunday Ticket package.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

I have DirecTV and love it. Switched from Comcrap back in September (when they running the NFL ST package you speak of, free Premier for 3 months). If you want HD channels you need to be with DirecTV - the MPEG4 stuff looks amazing too, much better than what Comcrap was sending me. Their SD channels look a little better than cable but they're still nothing great but I'm watching on a 57" display. Monthly bill is about the same as it was with cable but I have a lot more channels than I did with cable, including all of the movie channels. The HD-DVR is nice and they do a good job of updating the firmware pretty regularly and adding new features.

IMO, the Sammy is probably the best of the lot... Sammy and Sony use the same panels for their LCDs and tend to get the highest ratings. Take a look at what people have to say about the model and go from there.

I think so too, that and the Sharp are on the top for me right now. The problem with the Sammy is that it's a refurb
though, not that I really care but...
I think I'll head over there this weekend so I can see them all side-by-side and get a better idea. I've seen that Toshiba in their store before and was just blown away by the quality of the picture (they were running an HD-DVD demo disc straight from an HD-A3 player) but I have a Toshiba now and it's been quite the PITA.

List is $299, there's almost always a promotion for $199. You will have to come in with $199 up front almost for sure. That's for the HD-DVR. You can get an HD receiver free and you can get a SD DVR free but not an HD-DVR free.Check DBSTalk though - http://www.dbstalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=12 - somewhere there is a very large thread about deals/etc..ways to get it cheaper but as a new customer it's going to be near impossible. It was a huge sticking point with me at first too and I held off having DirecTV installed for a long time because of it - I didn't feel I should have to invest such a huge amount of money for something I didn't know, at the time, would be any better than what I currently had. That was all during the HD-LITE uproar before they launched the D10 sat. I finally gave in and I'm glad I did - it's well worth it. They'll give you plenty of monthly credits and stuff too for joining up, they take care of their customers pretty good but it does take a long time to get through to them on the phone.

I would list them:
1) toshiba - The green push is easy to correct and this set puts out a nice pic
2) sharp - Get set
3) Samsung - Its an ok set but I think the other two above are a little better IMO.
Honestly your 57" CRT is the TV to keep. That probably puts out a better pic then any of those above with some fine tuning..
Good luck

I see that the Hitman blu ray will include an extra DVD with a digital copy of the movie for consumption on ipods, laptops, etc.
I really liked this idea when I heard the Family Guy Blue Harvest set came with a digital copy and I really hope this becomes the norm, although this can't make it easy for them to avoid piracy.

I'm wondering if I should sell my fully backwards compatible, 60G model....and then rebuy a 40G model.....since I do not own any PS2 games.....nor will I buy any. Are the 60G still fetching a decent amount?

it works really well..I like the features and I think the picture is great even not being 1080. I don't have an HD cable box hooked up to it or any HD or BluRay dvds but I bought it just to play my 360 on...

Linkage? Nevermind....
I should have bought the 1 year replacement warrenty on my 80GB when I traded my 60GB one in at EB.
I'm guessing this ties into there being a white model coming. Though now I'm confused as the 40GB one has certain things that clearly make it inferioir to the 80GB model. Not sure why they would want to continue to move forward with that model.
Maybe the white PS3 is going to be the higher tiered model?
By the way, the fact that there are 132 versions of the PS3 and 360 is one of the stupidest things EVER about the current state of video game systems. I really miss the day where there was just one console for each brand. All the SNESs were the same.

The PS3 has this feature for Blu-ray, where it makes you a digital copy for your PSP of the BD.

I just finished watching The Kingdom on HD-DVD and I gotta that say although the video quality is great, the audio with the Dolby 5.1 is one of the weakest audio presentations on Hi-Def. For those who have Smokin' Aces on standard DVD, its somewhat of the same thing and its quite piss poor. For an action movie of such high caliber, you'd expect an Uncompressed PCM track but unfortunately, this is something that really does not rock the house. Oh well, its still a great movie, the audio could've been so much more though.

I use Netflix, but for HD-DVD. Haven't had too many problems, even got a couple titles like Shrek the Third and Mr. Bean's Holiday the day they were released (at my house on Tue.). There's maybe 3 or 4 out of 40 in my queue that are on any kind of 'waiting' status - I assume because they don't have enough copies to go around. BladeRunner is one of those on 'Long Wait' for me - it always has been since it came out. I have The Kingdom, The Departed, and Balls of Fury at home right now.

NPD: Free Blu-ray player deals led to boosted sales this month
By Nate Mook (nmook@betanews.com), BetaNews
January 24, 2008, 2:46 PM
A report from NPD Group (http://www.npd.com/) claimed Blu-ray standalone player sales accounted for 93 percent of the high-def market for the week ending January 12, but NPD itself won't stand behind the numbers (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/mytwocentsa149.html#npd), saying they were leaked and that weekly sales data is not a long-term indicator.
According to Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis for NPD, the data "came from an NPD subscriber" and "wasn't approved for release from NPD." He added that the firm typically sees big fluctuations in sales volumes each week, and never makes long-term judgements based on weekly data.
"It reflects what was going on during that week," Baker said, adding that it wasn't smart to "extrapolate that out for six months.
"So what went on the week ending January 12 that led to such high numbers in Blu-ray standalone player sales? Bundling deals with HDTVs, explained Baker. Sharp Blu-ray players accounted for over 30% of sales, as they were offered free to buyers of the company's LCD televisions.
Sony -- also accounting for one-third of sales -- had a similar $400-off deal for Blu-ray players when buying a Sony HDTV.
Panasonic, like Sharp, offered a free Blu-ray player and made up for the remaining third of units sold. Samsung Blu-ray sales were almost non-existent, as the company did not offer any special deals to TV buyers.
The NPD figures did not include Sony's PlayStation 3 or Microsoft's HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 -- only standalone players.
Baker wouldn't get specific -- since NPD normally never even comments on weekly sales data -- but said there was some drop in HD DVD player sales. For its part, the HD DVD Promotional Group told BetaNews the weekly sales data was from before the HD DVD player price drop Toshiba announced last week.
Baker did provide BetaNews some insight as to how NPD counts sales. It receives its data from point-of-sale systems from a number of retail outlets across the United States. He would not say how many retailers send data to NPD, but said it was "double digits."
NPD's numbers do not include online sales from the likes of Amazon, where Toshiba's HD-A3 HD DVD player is the number one seller in the DVD player category and number 14 in all of electronics. By contrast, standalone Blu-ray players do not make the electronics list.

Good call, if there's anything you want to hook up with component cables that's the way to go since the 910 has component switching while the 710 and 810 don't. You also get high definition sound but the player has to do the grunt work. I just about went with the 810 until I found out about the non-component switching thing.

I plan to watch it this weekend. :)
I saw it in the theater and of course in the theater it sounds fine but when you play it back, its just very flat sounding. You gotta turn the volume quite high and even so, all the sound levels whether it be dialogue, gunfire or explosions are all at the same volume. There is no dynamic audio whatsoever.
And alot of the dialogue sounds mumbled as well. The audio is way subpar, I'm quite dissappointed but the video is just fine.
In the theater, it is a somewhat different experience. I was quite annoyed by the constant handheld camera work. There was almost absolutely not steady cam work at all the movie unless it was an action set piece which involved using a crane or a stationary camera. But even in drama scenes which are all driven by dialogue, Peter Berg just refuses to shoot with steady cam. Its all handheld and the camera moves quite violently even when its not necessary. Its alot better watching it on HD-DVD for the video but its less dissorienting. I'm not talking about Cloverfield shakiness but its just never still.

I know everyone probably already has them but if anyone still needs 300 or The Bourne Identity on HD I've got them both. I bought an A3 today for my dad and got those 2 for free but we already have them. I'd really like to trade for other blu ray or hd movies but if anyone wants to buy them out right, I'd part with them for $15 apiece delivered or both for $25. Just lmk. Thanks, Matt

It's pretty rare than Universal screws up a day and date release like that. :(

I noticed something like this (or the opposite, really) with my blu ray copy of 300. It seemed that the sound effects and music blew the dialogue out of the water. The voices where just so low when compared to the music and other sound. I'm not sure if that's how the movie is but I always just assumed I didn't have my TV audio set up right. (Even though 300 is the only movie I've had this problem with).
It got so ridiculous that I had to turn on the captioning so I didn't have to constantly play with the volume between dialogue scenes and action scenes.

As an FYI to those that are looking to pick up a PS3, there is still no mention of a new model of the PS3 or a price cut in the ads for the week of Feb. 3rd - Feb. 9th.
Resume waiting for more info on this rumor.

Well, if the rumor is correct the announcement comes on the 28th ;)
For what it's worth, retailers weren't informed of the last price drop beforehand... I remember seeing old price PS3s in the flyers up here weeks after the price drop.

I don't know if this happened to anyone else, as I'm sure most of you have already recieved yours back. But remember the Disney replacement BR of Pirates curse of the Pearl? Where all you had to do was call a number or e-mail them? Well I finally got a response today, and now they want me to send in the old disc and then they will send me out a new one? Has this happened to anyone else? Or did they just send out the BR replacement like they said they would?

How are you connecting the sound to the tv? With HDMI or with red/white RCA? You might need to set the player to output 2 channel sound rather than 5.1.

No but they are doing that now because people who didnt even own the disc were calling in and getting a free movie.

Looking for a BluRay review from you guys.
Anycody have Memento on BluRay?Whats the quality? Is it worth Double Dipping since i have it on Regular DVD?
Watched Training Day last night-What a sweet flick
I thought Memento looked very good. I remember back a long time ago when I was asking the same question and Chugga said it was one of the first blu-rays where they actually got the PQ-control right.
If you're a big fan of the movie, I'd saw double dip. Especially if it's one of those $13.99 titles at tower.com.
Final Thoughts
'Memento' is a true cinematic original, an audacious feat of narrative gymnastics that manages to transcend its structural gimmick to achieve a haunting resonance. Sony has put together a fairly good Blu-ray release on paper; with an initially good-looking transfer, a solid soundtrack and a couple of extras. Alas, upon closer examination the transfer suffers from an unacceptable level of compression artifacts. I also wish Sony didn't need to sacrifice extras for bit space, because I don't think Blu-ray is going to succeed unless it offers at least as comprehensive a supplemental package as standard DVD. All in all, 'Memento' is tough to recommend given these negatives.

TIER 3 -BRONZE-
Few HD POP effects, some digital noise/artifacting. Not demo material, but a better picture than up-converted DVDs.

Also, the AVS tier threads imo have the least amount of actual credibility of the entire high definition community on the Internet.

Ok just finished up hooking everything up all my new entertainment items I purchased today! Went to Best Buy and got the following
32" Samsung 720p HD-TV
Playstation 3 (for Blu Ray player. Got Spiderman 3 Blu Ray with it)
Playstation 3 remote
Toshiba A3 HD-DVD player (9 free movie deal) (Got Shooter and Terminator 3 for in store free movies)
War Blu Ray
Super Bad Blu Ray
Got everything hooked up now and it looks great. I am getting 2 more HDMI cables from monoprice though. The TV has 3 hdmi slots and right now I only have the PS3 hooked up through it. Still need my HD-DVD player and DVR hooked up through HDMI.
I am about to go browse and buy some more movies online. Gonna hit up that Tower.com deal for sure :)
Oh btw I had all kinds of Best Buy rewards/coupons. I had $85 rewards. Plus several coupons with money off that I used. I got everything for $1200 which includes service plan for the TV. Really made out I think. Plus I got triple rewards points from my purchases today so I will have another $150 or so coming back to spend more :)

Well I found out my Monster Surge Protector was smoking and it melted. I am prying none of my electronics are fried. I have to go buy another one.
Unreal nothing was even turned on. I have never seen anything like it before.
Thanks god I was home. I will be making a call to monster.
Thats fargin scary:eek:Thank God you were home bro.

You selling these to that other schmuck;)
No I just sent them to him but didnt really look into it.
Then Kiana was looking over my shoulder and wanted a figure which is like 1500 points. I have 650 but would have had close to that if I didnt give them to the guy.
He was getting a POTC TV for his son.

UPDATE:
Bought a New Washer and Dryer :) Unreal deal on them. Plus I bought a 20% off coupon from Home Depot on the bay for $1.50 and Lowes allowed me to use them on my washer and Dryer? Saved about $400.00 on them both. Best $1.50 I have ever spent. I bought a total of 6 of ebay. Amazing the things you find out there.
Also my buddy found another electrical problem. Small one and we fixed it.
EVERYTHING IS WORKING NOW!!!
Problem was with the bottom oulet. He checked the top oulet and everything was working. So when I used the bottom outlet things were not working. I am some f-edup electrical but I am replacing it all this summer.
My heart is now better :).
So the Monster Surge really did its job. Damn house still smells like burnt Plastic... But not bad for the scare I had about losing components.

Star Trek: TOS and Lost Seaon 4 arrives Friday FINALLY after ordering them a month ago... but for $135 shipped, I was prepared to wait. :D
We also watched Blades of Glory Friday night and Superbad Saturday night.
Blades was entertaining enough... probably worth a rent more than a buy. PQ was decent, but hardly reference.
Superbad was pretty damn funny... at least better than I thought it was going to be especially after being disappointed with Knocked Up. PQ was slightley below average... one again, hardly a reference disk.

Here's the major problem CoachB.
Shooter was mass produced and readily available in stores for sale.
Blades of Glory never made it to retail... ever... anywhere. If it was mass produced, the disks never made it to retail and were most likely destroyed. It's speculated that any copies that did make it out were demo disks for reviewers and the like. I'd be surprised if 100 Blades of Glory BDs existed world wide.
In other words, if you REALLY want to watch the movie in HD, it would be cheaper and easier for you to go buy yourself an HD DVD player and an HD DVD copy of the movie. :)
Or you can wait 12 months or more for Paramount/Dreamworks to release it...

Perfect Storm HD-DVD has a poor video transfer. Sound is really good but in some scenes, the edges are soft. Its still a SLIGHT upgrade from standard DVD but for a movie of such caliber, you'd expect a better video transfer. The video quality is quite dissappointing.
