Michael Clayton, American Gangster, and The Invasion are all mine. MC has a boring ass title but I've heard it's really good so it'll be a blind buy. Actually, all 3 will be blind buys.

Does anyone have pics of their setups? I'll probably take some soon and post 'em but I'm interested in seeing other setups too.

I disagree. If the magins in sales continue week in and week out to look like this, there is no incentive for Universal and Para/DW to make HD-DVDs. Why would they just want to put movies on the shelf if no one is going to buy them? Everyone you talk to in stores now says that Blu-ray is the right choice. Not that those store people are always correct, but that is where the typical shopper gets their info and who they trust.

I think those compaines might be holding out for the BDA to give them some money, so they can get something out of the switch to Blu-ray, or perhaps they really are tightly contractually bound to HD-DVD for awhile.

Personally, I think the BDA will just wait them out and eventually they will come over to the Blu-ray side. If the market for Blu-ray keeps growing, which it will, then they would be foolish and not worried about making money, if they continued to only make HD-DVD movies.

I'll be really interested to see what the charts look like when HD-DVD has a day and date release that is something good. What is the next one? Bee movie? Beowolf?

Those 2 and American Gangster.

I think the only one of those 3 that will sell as a "major" new release on HD DVD is Beowulf. Bee Movie seemed to not get a lot of ....ugghh....buzz (heh heh), and American Gangster, while good, won't draw in massive purchases.

And, if history is any indication, I'd bet you'll see the next wave of blu-ray BOGOs the week Beowulf is released.

I see your point about the charts in relation to last year.

The point you and another person brought up about the release schedule makes no sense though. You can't just say HD-DVD isn't doing well because they haven't had good movies to release. That is going to be a problem into the future and only going to get worse.

Of course Blu-ray had a better release scheule. They have more studios and therefore more movies. If you put out more content, more people are going to see it and buy it. Is the plan for HD-DVD to stay alive on their current release schedule? What does that amount to? 12 movies a year from two studios?

If they can't (or won't) release catalog titles to get their output to the same general area as Blu-ray, they have no shot. Either Uni or Para could have released any of NUMEROUS catalog titles that people have been waiting for and tried to get sales this last month. Neither of them did, in fact, I don't think they released anything since the first week of the year and apparently aren't until American Gangster.

What else comes out the same week as AG? Anything from Blu-ray?

I agree that uni/para/dreamworks need to release catalog titles if hd dvd is going to be around for more than another year - but if we've learned anything from the past year, we don't know what the heck is going to happen 3 months from now, let alone 2 weeks from now.

All I'm saying is HD DVD has been dead about half a dozen times in the past year - yet the BDA seemingly can't close the door on them, the time to strike is now rather than wait out those studios because if they do start dipping into those catalog titles....... then HD DVD might be around for as long as blu ray is.

What will it prove though? The only week HD DVD got even close to a 50:50 was when Transformers was released. Every other week in 2007 was Blu winning 2:1. So yes it may close the gap some when movies like Beowulf, Bee Movie and even I Am Legend come out but even then it won't mean anything. Even if the market for Blu/HD DVD sales are small, with HD DVD not having a single title in the Top 10 for 3 weeks straight it still shows that YES consumers of HDM have spoken. Universal, Paramount and Dreamworks have to know that.

Well, in the case of HD DVD not having a movie in the top 10 for 3 weeks straight it IS for lack of trying. You have to put popular new releases out in order for people to care, and Universal and Paramount just aren't doing this in 2008.

It's not like HD DVD's best are losing to blu-ray's best. Not that it really matters...but just saying a statistic like that is because blu-ray keeps coming out with new movies and HD DVD is for some unbelievably frustrating to understand reason sitting on their thumbs.

Sbrooks the ONLY reason the week of Transformers was even close was because of the Bogo. Just like they do EVERY time HD DVD has a big release.

Yes I'm aware of that. It doesn't mean anything now though. If that's the best single week HD DVD could do while going up against a BOGO in the span of over a year then what does that say for the format?

I think everyone knows by now that the BDA doesn't have to have BOGO's to show they've won. It's already a given now. The weekly numbers from last year proved it and the numbers from January 2008 really prove it. Let's say there's no BOGO the weeks AG, Beowulf and Bee come out and for some miraculous reason the numbers go back to the 2:1 we had all last year. What would that prove? Honestly, I own both formats and over 150 movies between them. But it's time to move on. Blu-ray has won.

On a sidenote, I switched my 60GB PS3 from component to HDMI and started screening some DVD's in 1080i (TV's max). Pretty impressed so far. The DTS version of Saving Private Ryan is playing right now. Looks the BEST I've seen it since the theater.

It would prove BR is a niche market. 70% of studio support Millions of players and if they only maintain a 2:1 lead. Cmon that would be sad.

What has BR won? This is the part I dont understand. BR can not sell more then 300k at best on any movie new or not. With millions and Millions of BR players out there why is that?

So please tell me what they won??

Blu-ray has been vastly ahead in the numbers for much of 2007. HD DVD owners don't seem to care. Up to this point Universal, Toshiba and Paramount haven't seem to publicly care about it, either.

The numbers from last year proved they did have to do them in order to win - w/out the bogo on TF week it would have probably been 2:1 in favor of HD DVD.

I'm also not bashing HD-DVD. I just want those studios that support it to at least go purple, so I can get those movies as well. I have no interest in paying $200 for a HD-DVD player for the 6 movies that will come out that I want. I don't need it for upconversion and, as stupid as it may sound, don't have room for it in my AV rack.

What I want is to be able to buy the movies I like and want on Blu-ray, since I already have a PS3. I want those last two studios to quit hanging on to a dying format (that they don't seem to be real interested in supporting fully due to the lack of releases this past month and upcoming) and start putting out Blu-ray movies.

What the numbers tell us is that more people, for whatever reason, are buying up Blu-ray movies more than HD-DVD. So it stands to reason that more people have Blu-ray players and want movies for them.

HD-DVD has had some BOGO the last two weeks, but those might have just been on Amazon, so I suppose they don't count. Why is that anyway? Do they want to sell their data to the NPD?

For those of you with both formats, your first true purple choice in the new era is I Am Legend. Which one are you buying and why?

who cares??? Are you not gonna buy American Gangster or Beowulf on HD-DVD??? Just enjoy the movies when you can...I want to watch them when they first hit the shelves. Who cares if it comes out on Blu-ray or HD-DVD...as long as it comes out in Hi-Def. Once the format is done...does the player stop working???or the movies don't work???? or does the player not upscale normal DVD's anymore?????

Sorry, I thought someone might have the answer really quick. Go with the 605 then, that's a huge difference. The 805 can't possibly be worth $300 more, for what? 2 more HDMI inputs and the ability to make custom input labels? What else could it possibly have to make it that much more?
*edit* searched a little more and found out the 805 has better DAC's, whatever the hell those are ;) .
I'd be really curious if it sounded THAT much better or is it something that only a real audiophile is going to notice in a small little home theater application.

It's pretty simple why the 805 is better than the 605...
1. 605 - 90 watts x 7 into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at 0.08% THD
2. 805 - 130 watts x 7 into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at 0.05% THD

power is power..trust me..take it if you can get it!!

3. The 805 is THX® Ultra2 certified(components have to reach certain specs to receive this logo..if the 605 reached them, why wouldn't Onkyo have the 605 certified)
4. The 805 has THX Surround EX

I agree it is worth $300 more to some but not to others. The 605 is MORE then plenty for most people.

But the 805 has the Lip Sync issue and to me thats not acceptable. The 605 does not.

Thats why I am having a hard time picking one. The 805 is pretty much future proof but the 605 is more then plenty for me RIGHT NOW.

In 4 years or so I will getting the newest and best again even if I pick up the 805 now.

Its a tough choice. I am hoping the 805 comes down in price soon and they fix the lip synce with future one's.

I agree with pretty much everything you said. I might add why not just make movies on both formats so people who have one or the other can get any movie they want? I for one cannot afford both players and all the wires and such that goes with setting up a nice system.

I have to order my 5 free Blu Ray movies that come with my player I got for Xmas. Does anyone want or need any of the movies on the list? Maybe we could do a pre-trade and I could order you one off the list. It's the standard free 5 list, you can see whats on there by going to BB.com and clicking on Panasonic BR rebates. It shows the same list as the print out one I have. LMK as I have to send this in soon.

Anyone who has Resident Evil: Extinction watch the special features? There's a preview for what looks like a kick-ass CG movie called Resident Evil: Degeneration.

I haven't heard a thing about this, but if it makes it to blu it could give FF: Spirits Within a run for its money in the CG PQ department.

I might not get I Am Legend on either format....I thought the ending was a giant turd. And the scene with the dog in the middle scarred me for life.

But they advertise alternate endings, so that has my interest. And the infected people were damn cool.

That scene was terrible. My wife says I can't buy the movie simply because of that scene. Apparently others were as traumatized by this as I was.

I wasn't a fan of this one. Statham was watered-down and Jet Li fought for about 5 minutes, the rest of the time he's talking, which isn't a good look for him.

I thought it was very cookie-cutter, B-rate action. Nothing memorable. The ending was weak, the one twist was decent, I'll give you that, but the twist at the end was totally unnecesssary.

A much cooler Chinese-underground type movie imo was The Corruptor.

Weird, dude. I watched First Blood last night also! I thought it looked OK, they probably did what they could with it short of a complete remaster.

You question how good one of these movies actually looks in HD until you scan through the extras in standard def and realize how unwatchable they are because of the difference in PQ, even in a movie like this it's night and day.

Video: HD DVD Super Bowl Commercial
Mon Feb 04, 2008 at 12:41 AM ET

It didn't air nationally (nor was it new), but Toshiba's much-hyped Super Bowl ad did air in several markets, and we've got the video.

Following a full week's worth of anticipation, reaction to the ad among HD DVD fans in our forums area was somewhat muted; although it had been expected to run nationally, it appears Toshiba instead made a targeted spot buy, with those in some markets seeing the ad, while others did not.

Meanwhile, HD DVD fans who were lucky enough to see it were disappointed to see that it wasn't a new ad, but rather a re-badged version of the football-themed spot that Toshiba has been running all season long. Others defended the ad, arguing that it had met its goal of raising awareness for the format in general and for the new low price points of Toshiba's players.

To watch the ad, go here: http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/High-Def_Disc_Marketing/Toshiba/Video_Clips/Video:_HD_DVD_Super_Bowl_Commercial/1430..

Just watched it. Pretty much worthless. Old commercial, and in my opinion at this point advertising a $149 format of a dying format to joe six pack, who even though he may be totally ignorant about high definition, still knows blu-ray is winning this thing, that's just ******ed.

Bad decision.
No new annoucements.
Anemic lineup of good movies.
No interest in trying something new (only releasing a new movie on HD DVD/DVD combo)

If or when HD DVD dies, even though I am heavily invested in it, I unfortunately have to say I won't feel the least bit sorry for Toshiba that Sony got the best of them. Toshiba/HD DVD has been 1 step behind this entire time save a seemingly inexplicable decision from Paramount 7 months ago.

Well, I watched Saw 4 Blu and gotta say it was pretty disappointing. Felt like they were reaching for a story throughout the whole movie and it had the worst twist yet at the end. I stand by my convictions that after Saw 3 they should have called it quits. Saw 3 wrapped up the trilogy quite nicely where this one just looks for stupid reasons to drag the franchaise on even further. But, movie studios just want to keep making money....

Picked up the Spider Man Trilogy and Saw 2 BD as well at Wal-Mart.

Actually I'm happy that Toshiba made the decision to put out an ad during Super-Bowl to prolong the losing battle for as long as they can even though defeat is inevitable. I don't mind that they keep on fighting because I just bought my HD-DVD player on December 2007 and I don't wanna think that it was a waste.

If and when they lose the battle, fine. I'll just watch whatever I have on HD-DVD and then just use it as an upconverting DVD player.

I'll tackle this one.

First, SB adds are supposed to good... just look at the hype each year just for the adds. Hell, many people watch the SB just for the adds.

Fans of the format, myself included, hoped that the add would be a little something special. Something to help gain at least a little ground back. Instead it turned out to be a recyled add that was pretty much aimed at clearing out old stock.

Like Holland said, I expected a bit of BOOM, but got crickets instead... pretty pathetic for the $3 million they spent for the spot.

2008 RIP HD DVD :(

I also didn't get the HD-DVD ad. I live in Ohio. I heard a rumor that the ad was even in SD. Anyone know if that is correct?

While I want Blu-ray to win, simply because I have a PS3, it is pretty bad that they more or less wasted $3 million. Now they might get some people into the store to ask about it, but those people will be told by most every sales person that HD-DVD is dying, so if a sale is made, they will probably just push people to Blu-ray.

If someone could put out a good Blu-ray player for around $300 bucks, it would probably take off more. There are probably still a lot of people who won't buy a PS3 simply because it is a "game" system, regardless of the fact that it is the best Blu-ray player.

As a side note, a guy at Best Buy told me they are eliminating the Motorstorm bundle and replacing it with an Uncharted bundle in April. No increase in HD space or rumble. Take it for what it is worth.

This is very true, and I can't believe HD DVD would be so blind as to see what's going on in the retail stores. The employees push blu-ray, especially at Best Buy, so while they might get a few people straggling in to ask about HD DVD, they'll just be pushed in the other direction.

In a twisted way, they're almost spending the money to help blu-ray, since it raises awareness of High Definition as a whole, but the people in the stores will most likely be pushed toward blu-ray.

HD DVD seems insistant on doing everything but putting out more quality titles. Totally inexplicable imo.

Totally agree. No HD-DVD content = no sales and only driving more people to Blu-ray. People are going to see more BR titles in the store, in their newspaper ads, etc. Blu-ray continues to release catalog titles on a weekly basis (insert your own opinion here on the quality) but they are out there if nothing else.

HD-DVD is doing nothing, other than trying to give thier players away at low prices. That worked well when they actually had movies to watch on them, but won't as the lead in BR movies increases.

Too bad that, like everyone says, all the store people are pushing BR now, so regardless of price, most people aren't going to drop $150 on something a store employee tells them will be worthless in a year.

HD DVD add for SB
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWlj5ZX7JmY

I saw it. Pretty pathetic.

kawai7
02-04-2008, 12:54 PM
I'll tackle this one.

First, SB adds are supposed to good... just look at the hype each year just for the adds. Hell, many people watch the SB just for the adds.

Fans of the format, myself included, hoped that the add would be a little something special. Something to help gain at least a little ground back. Instead it turned out to be a recyled add that was pretty much aimed at clearing out old stock.

Like Holland said, I expected a bit of BOOM, but got crickets instead... pretty pathetic for the $3 million they spent for the spot.

2008 RIP HD DVD :(

I think the purpose was to build awareness with regards to gaining new buyers of the medium as opposed to trying to excite existing fans of it.

In the eyes of the someone who doesn't know what HD-DVD is, they would probably be thinking "ooooh that looks interesting". But in the eyes of the fan of HD-DVD, they were all thinking "God, that sucked!!" I believe the fans are looking at it in a completely wrong way. A commercial is still a commercial. They just bought the ad space for $3 million to get the ad on and thats what they got.

They don't need to appeal or direct their ad to people who already are fans or own HD-DVDs, they want to gain the appeal of the standard movie buff who only owns DVDs. They could care less for the people who already own it because Toshiba already got your money. Now its time to get money from the new people and they probably achieved their intention yesterday.

This is why BR/HD DVD will always be a niche market IMO

It's the one that's $149 anyways. The 5 free by mail has always been around (you get that with any HD-DVD player including the 360 add-on) and the 2 free have always been in the box. The only deals on this one come when they let you pick another 2 free off the rack or when they were price-matching the WalMart A2 @ $98 in Nov. when they ran out of them.

You are partly correct. They did try to pull in the new customer with that ad, not do something to entice the person that already has HD-DVD.

Unfortunately for them, when that person goes to Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. the person working there will tell them how HD-DD is dying and that Blu-ray is going to win because it has the most studio support.

Then that sales person is going to walk them over to the HD media display and show the large amount of Blu-ray movies in stock versus HD-DVD movies. Then they are going to point out that there aren't any HD-DVD releases until Beowolf and AG.

The person wanting to buy an HD-DVD player is now going to do one of the following:

1) not care and buy one anway
2) become confused and not buy anything and probably leave to do some more research on their own, which will likely lead them down the Blu-ray path
3) See that the sales person (in this case) is basically right and buy a Blu-ray player instead.

Without also exciting their current owners, I don't see how HD-DVDs advertising was effective, except in that first case. In my opinion, that first case is a small portion of people.

Meh, G4 is just repeating what ArsTechnia and Joystiq have reported in the last week or two. G4 stinks as a whole. It has yet to be confirmed by anyone as more than a rumor.

In fact, if you are to beleive rumors, the 80GB is out the door, but Sony is still undecided at this point what they want to do. They know they want to keep two skus, but they are unsure what the other sku should be atthis point.

Regardless, there are more than enough 80GB systems floating around that you will be able to find one for a very long time.

I only have Blu Ray, and I cant afford both, when DVD came out that was the only choice. I'm just a movie fan, I don't care either way, but since I bought a BR, I would like to see it succeed. But I also would like to see ALL the movies I wanna see/buy, when I wanna see and buy them, and not have to wait to enjoy them because of some dang format war by the Gigantic movie companies that are already rich. Until one of the companies gives up(which will probably never happen) make all the movies in both formats and let those who have Red or Blue or Both buy whichever one they want. In the end the movie companies will still continue to get richer. Ive bought as many HD Dvds in the last month as i have Blu Rays.I love both formats.

The movie or the PQ of the HD DVD?

If you're talking about the movie, it's good but it's not a great film. There's no climax, Crowe's character is forgettable....

Denzel thumps his chest, as usual, and the story is good, the mood of the movie is cool, the action is decent....

Just went through all of HD DVD's releases for the rest of the year and the only movies that are must-buys are...

The Invasion
Beowulf
American Gangster
Land of the Dead
Fletch
Michael Clayton *maybe
Sweeney Todd
Twister, if it does get released.

Pretty sad release list so far. :(

Can't say the BD schedule is that much better :(

30 Days of Night
Ice Age
Gattaca
ID4
No Country for Old Men
Unbreakable
Predator

And that list was hard enough to put together for stuff that's actually going to be worth buying...

Q1 is always crappy for new releases of any sort.

Its funny I remember back in 97' drunk as a skunk watching an info-mercial from Philips showing DVD in action..I knew i just had to have one. I got one the phone and within 10 mins i just purchased my first DVD player----for $799 bucks!!!! but it came with 5 free movies!...now 10-11 years later after having upgraded to a 60"1080p tv and a HD DVD and Blu ray player..watching a standard DVD at 480i/p resolution seems unbearable..cant wait to see whats next!

i was the first person I know to have dvd (i was like 16). I remember my first dvd was Big Daddy and I watched it like 18 times, because everyone had to come over and watch it.

Now i'll be the first person I know (personally/irl) to get into blu-ray :)

If any of you guys are on the fence about theFrench Import HD DVD of Terminator 2-Dont be.It is absolutely awesome and i certainly understand why even Blu Ray fanboys are bent about the crappy release they got compared to this import. The sound is worth the price of the disc alone plus you get Theatrical and the Directors Ultimate cuts of the movie on two discs.

I have the French release and totally agree. Although now you can get the UK version (just the director's cut) for $21.95 at Xploited. If I didn't have the French one I'd get the UK one for that price. Especially since the theatrical on the French release has forced subtitles.

I think my first DVD player was a Phillips I bought in 1999 for $220 through ebay. My first DVDs were Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Dark City and Rounders. Of the hundreds or thousands of DVDs I've traded in or sold over the years, I think I still have these 3.

Can someone explain to me why The Island and Starship Troopers are available in the UK on Blu-Ray (especially since The Island is a DW film)? Let me rephrase that, why do they get it over there first before we do over here in North America? Does that mean they eventually come out here? What I would find disturbing is if they release it over there with no plans to release it over here (at least not even discuss the possibility of releasing it here any time soon).

Just wondering if I should go all out and visit the UK Amazon site to pick those up or just wait patiently.

Haha, so true, that case is ugly. I actually took the movies out and am displaying them without the trunk. Just waiting for the HD DVD cases in the mail and then I'll print out replacement covers. All the crap inside the trunk has actually been given away to my niece who's a HP nut, except for the movies and bonus disc. That's the last odd shaped boxed set I buy, rather they look good lined up on a shelf.

Just joined the HD-DVD club. I had bought an add on for the 360 about a year ago at 200 and ended up returning it. Well today I say an auction ending on ebay with a 360 hd-dvd add on Hulk,Aeon Flux,Darkman,Swordfish,Firewall,King Kong, and Heroes season 1 for a decent price so I bit on it. I know HD-DVD is on its way out, but oh well Im a sucker. I do plan on getting a Playstation 3 so I can have both here soon. So we will see how the collection builds.
