All I had was 2 remotes so I guess I didn't get the full vantage point of how great the remote could be. I had the DishNetwork remote (which controlled my tv too) and my receiver remote. Combining those 2 remotes was cool, but nothing earth shattering for me. Now if I had a disk changer in my setup I'd probably crap myself with how awesome the harmony is...I mean I'd never actually have to stand up.

PS3. This is the best option and what everyone will recommend in this thread.

so not many people use a standalone..they just use the PS3

I have the 550. It works pretty well for me. When the batteries die in mine, I don't have to replace my settings or anything like that. I just put in new batteries and I'm good to go.

Sometimes, somepeople forget to have spare batteries on hand... :(

i wonder if the eventual release of American Gangster on Blu-Ray will come with both versions of the film. 2 disc Blu-Ray releases are not often released.

LG to Continue HD DVD Support
Tue Feb 19, 2008 at 01:59 PM ET

Hoping to bridge the gap for HD DVD-supporting early adopters, LG said Tuesday that it would continue to support HD DVD in the wake of Toshiba's announcement.

In a statement first published by Pocket-lint.uk, LG acknowledged that Blu-ray will now be the leading high-def format, but "that does not rule out HDDVD immediately as there are still a number of consumers who have chosen HDDVD and begun to build a HDDVD collection."

The manufacturer went on to say that "at this present moment in time, it is necessary to provide a player which supports both formats and therefore create simplicity and convenience for the existing HDDVD consumer."

LG was the first electronics manufaturer to offer a dual-format high-def player, first issuing its BH100 back in January of 2007 (the company has since updated that earlier model with the BH200). Late last year, Samsung had entered the dual-format player market with its BD-UP5000, and plans for a second player in the coming months. A Samsung official was quoted Sunday as saying the company would likely focus on Blu-ray moving forward.

Harmony remotes will control any device with an IR receiver including the 360.

You can control the PS3 with a Harmony, but only if you add a 3rd party IR usb receiver to it.

Pretty sure you aren't getting that for the Wii. 2K isn't making it for the Wii as far as I know.

You are missing out on some really nice games as well as Blu-ray movies by not picking up a PS3.

Pretty sure you need to get your eyes examined as it's right on 2ksports' website that it's coming for the wii

Huh....what do you know. I guess since I hadn't seen it covered at all on IGN, I assumed it wasn't coming to the Wii.

I must admit I'm curious as to why you would get this for the 360 and the Wii. It is going to look like total crap on the Wii and likely play like crap as well. I would imagine they don't spend a lot of time making the Wii controls actually matter.

I was right...it looks like crap on the Wii. One point to you though for being correct about it actually being on the Wii.

That's not bad for the Wii, and besides, the reason they didn't put out a 2k7 was to ensure they had time to get the controls to work well. I want it for the Wii for the interactivity.

Run Lola Run was a b**** of a title to find today. I hate how alot of the bigger chains treat catalog titles like the plague. Best Buy no, Target no, Walmart no, FYE no.....finally found it at Borders. Borders by the way has the best selection of high def media known to man. They DO NOT miss a title. The only place that even comes close to them is Newbury Comics but their prices are so good that they sell out quick (and it's an hour drive).

But I mean damn you can walk into Borders look at their Blu-ray selection and be like "wait a minute this movie actually came out for Blu-ray? really I never knew". But anyways they of course have their downside....awful prices. I had to drop $38 on Man on Fire there because it was no where else around here. Run Lola Run was $28 which I imagine is a sucky price (probably could be had for $20) but what are you going to do.

Didn't have to worry about tax but the shipping is a bit of a downer unless you order a bunch. I got 9 movies delivered for $10 thats not too bad. But also I went parcel post, I'm not really in a hurry to get any of the movies so waiting a week or 2 won't kill me.

Amazon.com

clearly until retailers get their _ _ _ _ together there is no better choice than buying online

it was b&m retailers that I'm sure lead the charge for one HDM format, now it is time for them to act accordingly and reset the stores....

catalog has been slim pickins at the outset of the format roll out (though others including here tend to buy anything no matter how awful it is just because it is a HD title) but as poor as the number of skus has been retail has been even worse at keeping the few key ones in stock

I'm not sure if JaylisJayp will recall this because we are going back months....probably over an entire year now. But back when this thread was alot younger I was having a hell of a time trying to find Blu-ray titles I wanted. It was pissing me off and at one time I was like "screw it I'm going hd dvd I can't stand this crap of never getting a movie I want". But anyways everyone was like "well you can just go on amazon.com" and my rational behind always saying no (and believe me it's a weird rational) but I feel like I'd go overboard if I had every single movie ever released at my fingertips. I basically swore off ever shopping for movies on Amazon or any other online store unless there is just some absolutely ridiculous deal that can't be passed up (bogo's, $11.99 titles, etc).

I honestly never shop online. I would rather go without ever owning a title (I'm still on a year long search for Courage Under Fire) then have every single title I want. It's really my one and only way of keeping my buying habits in check. I take what they give me around here.

In unrelated news I watched Run Lola Run tonight and I've gotta say it was probably the weirdest transfer I've ever sat down and watched. For a catalog title the transfer is actually pretty damn sharp throughout most of the movie (4 star quality). But there are these certain scenes that you can tell are shot with a completely different camera and they are just out of left field because you can tell they are really really cleaned up and enhanced for high def, but the source itself is so bad that it still looks like polished crap.

Best thing I can relate it to is when you're watching a movie in high def and in one of the scenes the character is watching tv and it kinda zooms in to show you what he's watching and in the back of your head you're saying "wow the picture of this movie is amazing, but that tv is just so damn bad theres no way you can clean it up".

Overall I say it's a must buy if you're a fan because I think it's the best you'll see Run Lola Run....the bad scenes that are scattered here and there aren't a testiment to a bad transfer or lack of effort, just the source material was just well below par.

Any announcements on when to expect Universal and Paramount Blu-Ray titles out??

Nothing yet, I'd assume we'll get a press release soon with Universals Blu-ray intentions. Theoretically they could have movies out in April. I can definately see myself walking into a Best Buy and picking up Charlie Wilson's War on Blu-ray day/date. Right now they are probably just trying to fill out their release schedule and see where everything falls before letting the cat out of the bag. When they do have a press release maybe it's me overhyping it but I think it will blow Blu-ray fans out of the water. I'm talking an entire 2 quarters worth of title after title after title.

As for Paramount who the hell knows. They could have copies of Blades of Glory and Transformers ready to ship as we speak but who knows with them. Their foot is somewhat lodged in their mouth right now, so they are probably picking their words very carefully for when they finally do end the silence.

I'm very careful when picking catalog titles on Hi-Def. I've seen lots of poor transfers and some that are just a tad step up from the Standard DVD. So from now I just pick up new stuff unless a review clearly states that they really cleaned it up alot from the original source master.

Sleepy Hollow on Blu-Ray was my worst pick. I love Sleepy Hollow and got it on Standard DVD but after seeing it on Blu-Ray, I wish I hadn't picked it up.

All I gotta say is grain grain grain.

HD-DVD movies that I have that I wanna double-dip to get on Blu-Ray are Transformers and The Kingdom mainly because I know they can do much better on the audio on Blu-Ray compared to what they already got.

Hopefully never. The 360 only outputs HD DVD's with Dolby Digital 5.1/DTS and doesn't support ANY of the HD audio formats that are used on Blu-ray movies. A Blu-ray add-on for the 360 would be crippled right out of the box.

Cmon..you dont think M$ is gonna push a blu ray add-on? weather is supports certain audio formats or not they will sell TONS of them..

So it begins: Toshiba's HD-A3 falls to $99 at Circuit City, comes with 7 free HD DVDsPosted Feb 20th 2008 9:26AM by Darren MurphFiled under: Industry, HD DVD, Players, ToshibaIt's

not like there has been any shortage of deals on HD DVD hardware over the past few months or anything, but now that Toshiba (and almost everyone else on the planet) has officially yanked support for the format, prices are beginning to plummet en masse. First on the docket is the HD-A3 at Circuit City, which now sits at just $99.99 and comes with seven free titles, two of which are 300 and Bourne Identity. So yeah, if you've been waiting for this moment to snap up the failed format for cheap, hop on in -- but if we were betting souls, we'd say holding out just a wee bit longer would actually be in your wallet's best interest.

Amazon Names Blu-ray 'Digital Format of Choice'
Wed Feb 20, 2008 at 09:18 AM ET

Though it will continue to stock movies on both high-def disc formats, Amazon.com said Wednesday that it will more prominently feature Blu-ray hardware and software products on its website.

In a just-issued press release, the web giant said it was making the move in an effort to "help demystify high definition entertainment for consumers."

"The high-definition landscape is rapidly changing, and consumers are looking for guidance on how to make the best high-definition buying decisions," said Peter Faricy, vice president of movies and music at Amazon.com. "In order to best serve our customers, Amazon is recommending Blu-ray as the preferred digital format and will continue to carry the 'Earth's Largest Selection' of Blu-ray products."

Faricy went on to say that Amazon customers had "clearly voiced their support for the Blu-ray format," with sales of Blu-ray movie titles increasing from just over half of high-definition sales to over three-quarters of our high-definition sales since early January.

Though Amazon's statement this morning echoes a similar announcement from Best Buy early last week, the future of the HD DVD format by now is a fait accompli, following primary HD DVD backer Toshiba's announcement Tuesday that it would drop all efforts to produce and market the format.

For what it is worth I saw a post online with a clip of an ad from FutureShop this upcoming week. Apparently, starting on Friday (In the US ads start on Sundays) the 360 is going down by $50 in all models. Not sure if this is a permenant price drop or not, but stores traditionally don't have sales on consoles.

Wonder if MS is dropping the price to counter some of the residual momentum the PS3 should pick up from HD-DVD going away.

I'm confused as to why Para/DW hasn't made any sort of announcement yet rearding Blu-ray. Is it possible they are actually locked into HD-DVD for the full 18 months and forced to support a dead format?

I guess I assume they have to figure out some way to get out of their contract without giveing anyone back some of that "supposed" payoff money they got in the first place. It would seem that since Toshiba killed it, the contract should be void, but what do I know.

By the way, BDA's payment of whatever to Warner was a WAY better investment than the money Toshiba paid Para/DW it seems.

Define too many players? Toshiba is quoted as saying there are just over 1 million HD-DVD players sold total worldwide. That really isn't that many overall.

I assume that Para/DW are just going to release the HD-DVD movies that they already have pressed and mastered, since they already spent the time and money to do all of that. Maybe they can recoup some of that loss.

Also, they could just cancel them at the last minute as well. Blades of Glory was already shipped and when they went HD-DVD, they pulled all off them from the stores. So if they finally decided to just go Blu-ray, they could always pull them. More likely that they will just sell through what they have already done though.

Also, when a game console dies (Xbox, Gamecube, N64, PS1) 98% of the games are cutoff on the sytem. Usually only crap comes out. The only exception to this has been the PS2 which Sony actually continues to support.

Paramount is doing this purposely. Ignoring the fact that HD DVD is in fact considered dead by the very company you swore your loyalty to and while every other major studio or retailer has at least released a sentence or so about their intentions the biggest player left in the game hasn't said a word?

It's what they at Paramount likely consider brilliant marketing even though it's just a waste of our time. Paramount wants the spotlight all to themselves. Think about it, are we talking about Universal anymore? Nah they are in the bag, we are just anticipating when/what with them. If Paramount released a press release the same day it would get lost in the shuffle. Paramount most likely wants to make a big splash and drawing this out and pretending like it never happened is only making people more antsy for their press release.

When Toshiba made there announcement, that automatically dropped Para and Uni from their contracts. So they are free to do what they want.I'm confused as to why Para/DW hasn't made any sort of announcement yet rearding Blu-ray.

It depends on the remote... the higher function ones allow a lot more customization.

The 880 would allow you to do it.

Microsoft is about to mess up the HD format war one last time just for fun. Despite HD DVD officially being dead, the news we have is still going to tick off the Blu ray camp.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3ic60f3f2e7077b9b8dc969933f25fc601

All six major Hollywood studios are now in the Blu-ray Disc camp, a day after Toshiba has pulled the plug on HD DVD and Blu-ray became effectively the only next-gen game in town.

Paramount Home Entertainment quietly came onboard via a statement sent exclusively to The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday: "We are pleased that the industry is moving to a single high-definition format, as we believe it is in the best interest of the consumer," the statement reads. "As we look to (begin) releasing our titles on Blu-ray, we will monitor consumer adoption and determine our release plans accordingly."

No further details were given.

Daaaaamn, just popped in the Shoot 'Em Up Blu-ray and cranked up the audio. Easily one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. Granted I'm only getting the 1.5 MB DTS core from my PS3 but damn it's loud and oh so clear.

Question, if I buy one of the receivers you guys talk about all the time (remind me of the brand/model numbers again) and I hook it up to my PS3 via HDMI, what kind of audio would I get from a DTS-MA 7.1 Blu-ray?

I dont think the PS3 as of YET can bitstream DTS-MA. I get all these codecs confused sometimes so dont quote me on it if this is the correct one or not. I dont think it can either. Lets face it, if it could they would have done it by now.

PS3 the only time you want to bitstream anything right now is with DVD's everything else set PS3 to PCM

This is correct... the PS3 doesn't have a true HDMI 1.3a port, thus you can't even send DTS-MA to a receiver for decoding. Hopefully we see DTS-MA decoding on the PS3 very soon.

Toshiba actually makes a pretty damn good product. My first DVD player was a Toshiba (purchased in '99) and it still works like a charm even today. :)

Most of us are taking advantage of upgrading our entry level players and 360 addons to the higher end players that are being liquidated at some pretty great prices.

However, I wouldn't stockpile anything... there will be pleanty to go around.

No disrespect but that wasn't the smartest move for a purchase. You can easily expand that hard drive space with a 160GB external for $60. The 40gb w/giftcard was a no-brainer.

I'm so happy to finally be on the Blu bandwagon. I already had Fantastic 4 Rise of the SS and Spidey 3 so I at least got a few movie to watch on it (well as soon as my HDMI cables come in). And as far as HDDVD, I don't mind still buying HDDVD's as long as I can find them for cheap. :D

As for the speaker problem, if you have a copy of Star Wars or any THX DVD lying around, run the speaker setup test in it. What source were you using for sound and how was it connected to the receiver when only the front speakers would produce?

Well...there is no dire need for me to sell it.....I'm just trying to "buck" the system.

I have the 60g. And I have the Sony rewards CC. I also do not own any PS2 games and do not plan on buying any. I get 8 times the amount of reward points if I order from Sony Style. Sooooo.....if I can sell my 60g (which I really don't have to have....since I don't need the BC and the extra 20G doesn't matter)....for what a 40G costs...I'll order a new 40G and get the extra reward points....putting me that much closer to a Sony 910...or possibly even an ES series receiver :D

There should be an "input mode" button on the front of the receiver (the picture I have is crap so I can't make the text out exactly... cycle through it. The different inputs should read on the display.

You should only have 1 cable going from the receiver to the tv, so there should be no need for the tv to do anything other than display the picture.

If you are using the Receiver for HDMI switching and your TV only has one HDMI input then you will assign the Cable box and PS3 to "Video 6". Not two different imputs.

Also make sure you have the PS3 switch to HDMI as well..

The receiver should "Switch" sources for you. But I do not know enough about your receiver.

Well since you know that using "Sat" worked for the cable why not plug the PS3 in that to see if the PS3 outputs video if not then its a setting in your PS3 if it does then its a setting on another input on your receiver.

Do you have 2 or more HDMI inputs and 1 out on your receiver? Of so then try above.

I completely stopped collecting figures except for Chicago Bulls/Blackhawks/Bears/White Sox pieces.

I've actually been selling off as much of my collection as I can on the BST board. The only non-Chicago figures I plan to keep are my Snowy Brady and 49ers Rice.

And..........since it's swap meet Friday. I'm always happy to trade figures for blu's or HD DVD's!!!!

Is it just HDMI that opens the door to uncompressed audio...or do you need a receiver that can specifically support high-definition audio formats....and are the 2 different?

I'm still a little in the dark as to how the audio works.

Hey, since you use TVserity a lot, what are some good tips? What are the things that I should look for in a video to ensure I get good quality on my TV? I'm watching a copy of AG right now and it is OK at best quality wise.

Blacks are really crushed and it is sort of pixely in scenes with a lot of black. Also, the picture seems zoomed, but my TV isn't doing it.

Thanks!!

I'm all over that Niners Rice if you ever want to sell it. I've always wanted one. I too have a Snowy Brady that I bought for $25 bucks because the comic book shop guy needed guitar strings. I love that story.

I sort of stopped collecting as well. I used to grab a lot of figures and they just take up too much space and I don't really do anything with them. Right now I have 29 figures just sitting around that I need to open to display or do something with. This doesn't even include all the figs that I still have in boxes.

Now I just collect Niners figures, collector's edition/exclusives, and figs that are cool to display (favorite players/poses). The last few figs I bought were White Niners 3-pack, Frank Gore, and Bo Jackson.

This area is REALLY messy so bear with me (I'm not even sure I fully understand it).

You don't need an HDMI receiver to enjoy lossless. If you have an older receiver (like myself) and it has 6 channel PCM analogue input AND your HD DVD or BD player has PCM 6 channel analogue out AND the player decodes the proper the codec (or the disk has uncompressed PCM) then you can enjoy lossless. However, analogue out generally only comes on higher end players like the Toshiba XA2 or Toshiba A35. And while the Panasonic BD30 has analogue out, it doesn't decode lossless, so it's only good for uncompressed PCM I guess. All current 1.1 capable BD players and their functionality are listing in this link to AVS (http://www.avforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6201817&postcount=1)

HDMI receivers won't always work either due to the different version of HDMI ports.

Any HDMI port will send PCM over it. However this is only good if your player does the decoding. To bitstream the audio to the the receiver for decoding, you must have a HDMI 1.3a compliant player and HDMI 1.3a compliant receiver. If you're missing one or the other, forget about bitstreaming.

Since most of us own PS3s here (not an HDMI 1.3a compatible device), once they update it to decoding DTA HD Master audio, you can get by with any HDMI receiver to enjoy all lossless formats (we can already enjoy Dolby TruHD and uncompressed PCM). The PS3 will do all the decoding and send PCM to the receiver.

I think I got that right... I'm never sure about the PCM or bitstream part.

I'm a huge movie downloader and I download a lot of DVDRIP XviD's. When I play them through TVersity through my PS3 I know the quality won't be very good. But it's close to DVD quality and for movies I have no plan on buying or renting it's perfectly acceptable for me. Sometimes there is pixelation but it's just something I deal with. One thing I do like is for movies that only have 2 channel stereo sound, the PS3 simulates surround sound and takes some of the soundtrack and puts it to my rears. Bottom line is I don't stream movies for quality, I stream them for ease of use to watch them quickly.

I don't know how to explain it. It just happens automatically. I'm using optical from my PS3 to my old 6.1 Kenwood receiver. When I play a movie that only has the 2-channel sound, the PS3 simulates Dolby Surround and takes some of the audio and throws it to my surrounds. Sometimes it sounds really good surprisingly.

It's probably not be a feature of the PS3 because when I hit the select button while it's playing it says 2-channel. It's probably a feature of my receiver. Either way it's pretty cool.

Just me thinking out loud, but IMO this is how it all went down before the Warner switch.

Warner wanted to go one way or the other and quite possibly preffered HD DVD... they'd only go HD DVD if someone from the Blu side came over. They had large monetary offers from either side.

They found a taker in Fox... but Fox went back to Sony to see if they'd sweeten the pot. Sony did, Fox backed out and Warner, wanting an end, took the Sony offer.

I'm still trying to figure out, with using the PS3 as my player, what is the best receiver I need to get to enjoy the most out of my Blu Rays. Obviously...the most expensive one would probably do the trick....but for example...I'm looking in the area of the Oknyo 605 or 805...or Sony 810 or 910.

I'd like......7.1 audio......and to be able to play almost all of the tracks available on Blu Rays. It also will be my "movie" receiver...as I do not intend to listen to music on it.....so I don't care about that. And I need at least two HDMI ins....preferably 3.

Since your PS3 would do any decoding, you could get by with just about any HDMI receiver with 7.1. If you bought a receiver that had HDMI 1.3a and decoded TruHD and DTS HD Master, it would be more for a future player than anything.
