HD-DVD exchange for those of you that bought these goofy HD-DVDs.
http://www.hdscape.com/cat_upgrade.cfm
They are also on sale!!

I paid less than that when I bought them the first time before Xmas... I think I'll just hold onto them for now. :)

I imagine Paramount will have to address an exchange program sooner rather than later. Reason being...I've been reading about the original series Star Trek being released for season one. Apparently the pricing was rather high when they announced exclusivity to HD. With fans now being forced to purchase a Blu player...why would they buy another set for S1 again and blow $100+ is unrealistic.

Hmmmm....that is an interesting look at it. I guess for smaller movie purchases it isn't as big of a deal, but for big sets I can see where it would be an issue.
However, I'm going to just side with corporate greed and assume that they will just wait awhile before releasing the next set and release a Blu-ray version at the same time.
Those that don't already have the Season 1 set in Blu-ray will pick it up. Those that have it on HD-DVD will either buy the Season 2 set, rebuy them both, or be satisfied that they have Season 1 on HD-DVD and figure that by the time they need to replace the HD-DVD set, it will come down in price.
I see no real reason, other than an odd need for earning public goodwill and press, that a studio would offer an exchange program. There is more money to be made by not doing it and these studios are all about making money.

Oh, ewto16, did you know you can listen to all of either XM's or Sirius's satellite radio stations through TVersity/PS3? :D As long as you have a paying XM or Sirius sub you can go to www.millardsoftware.com and download either XM or Sirius's program from him. Then it runs in the background as a server. You enter the URL in TVersity as an Internet Audio Feed then all the channels show up. They take approx 10-15 seconds to load but it's pretty cool. :D
The same goes for all the Shoutcast Radio stations that are accessable in Winamp. Just add those URL's as an Internet Audio URL's and you can play them as well. :D

I'd like to see Paramount exchange for ST: TOS S1, but I doubt it will happen.
And I'd be very surprised to see it on BD anytime soon either. Toshiba was funding the remastering and creation of the rather expensive sets. With that gone now I can see Paramount shelving them until the install base is larger.

Nope. I'm into Blu Rays....and 1/4 Scale Premium Format statues from Sideshow...and that's it. Only visit this board because it's a habit and there are a few boardies I actually like.
I'm still trying to figure out, with using the PS3 as my player, what is the best receiver I need to get to enjoy the most out of my Blu Rays. Obviously...the most expensive one would probably do the trick....but for example...I'm looking in the area of the Oknyo 605 or 805...or Sony 810 or 910.
I'd like......7.1 audio......and to be able to play almost all of the tracks available on Blu Rays. It also will be my "movie" receiver...as I do not intend to listen to music on it.....so I don't care about that. And I need at least two HDMI ins....preferably 3.
The 605 will be more then plenty for you. The 805 is a tank and comes in about 60 pounds.
Since you need 3 HDMI ins I would go with either the 705 or 805.
605 only has 2 HDMI ins.

I suppose this will be dictated by the number of units sold. Not sure how many fans could have afforded the set anyways at $195 retail but for those that did...I'd be pissed at my investment going down the drain and the need to buy a new Blu player at a minimum of $400. Unless they want to burn bridges in that niche market...an exchange program needs to be addressed.

Hmmm...the waiting-it-out-til-they-forget option doesn't sound like a solid gameplan imo. No doubt fans will be contemplating selling their sets but with the value obviously going down, perhaps by 50%...it's going to leave a nasty taste in their mouths without some sort of exchange or proof-of-purchase rebate instituted.

Well, as many people on here point out, your investment didn't go down the drain. Your HD-DVds will still work. They don't stop working now. Assuming you are still interested in HD media, then you would be purchasing a Blu-ray player anyway, now that it will be your only option going forward. If you are a Star Trek fan, then you will buy the next season set and maybe pick up the old one on Blu-ray or not.

Early adopters face this problem all the time. You buy in and hope that you make the right choice or realize that you got your enjoyment out of the product while you could. Assuming you got $100 back, then you are really only out $99, which may or may not equal the value and enjoyment you got out of watching them.

Damn I guess I'm the only one who still collects Mcfarlane figures....going strong since 2001. I've toyed with the idea of quitting and selling everything I own about a million times by now but I could never pull the trigger. To this day I regret getting rid of all of my slu's and I don't want to feel that regret twice by getting rid of all my mcfarlane stuff. I also really don't have the luxury of a bunch of you guys of just cutting back and getting players from my favorite team...right now I've been waiting 3+ years for another player from my favorite team. I should put up pics one of these days....hell maybe today being snowed in and all.
As for Blu-rays ever since I changed my harry potter order over from the boxed set to the single dvd's I've been wanting to ditch my Die Hard boxed set and get the single disks. If anyone has the single disks and is looking for the boxed set let me know...or if you only have a couple of the singles we could work something out.

Don't mess with tags, there's no need. My folders on my 500GB external look like this....
-=Music=-
-=Movies=-
-=TV Shows=-
-=Pictures=-
-=UFC=- (I have all the UFC pay per views downloaded)
When I access my videos through TVersity I select Video > My Video > Folders so I see my actual folder names. Much easier that way. :)

I was able to trade my Harry Potter box set to a guy on HDD for the singles. Best trade EVER. :D The Die Hard box set I don't mind as much since it's actually in a Blu-ray case; just a big one. The Harry Potter box set was just too damn big and looked like crap on my shelf.

Well it was a snowy day today so I figured what better then to try out the new camera (which apparently sucks just slightly less then my old one)
The side I've got pictured in the first 2 photos is about 1/3 of my home theatre/sports room. Sports on one side movies/games/tv on other side.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d14/Chugga78/new/100_0024.jpg
Thats all of NFL1 through I'm going to say about NFL10....at least part of NFL10
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d14/Chugga78/new/100_0020.jpg
Thats a bunch of 11 and 12 and some 13 on the side. The figures keep going around the rectangle but I didn't take pics because it's not really done yet (and had a ton of rock band stuff in the way)
And then to keep things on topic: http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d14/Chugga78/new/100_0027.jpg
Like I said it was a snowy day today so I figured why not start alphabetizing them. Sorry for the crappy pic that doesn't even show the vast majority of the titles but I'm kinda in the middle of a move, building a shelving unit that they'll eventually go in. And yes I'm very aware I'm backlogged about 60 or so movies. But I'll catch up eventually, it's the BOGO's that put me behind schedule.

Well, I couldn't resist and got myself a Toshiba A-3 last night for $89. I can't see the down side at all when you consider the upconverting is much better than the DVD player I had before that up converted, not to mention the 7 free movies.
I figure with everyone panicing and selling off thier collections, I will still be able to get a lot of titles I want and eventually get Blue Ray when (not if) the price of players drop.
And Chugga, I still collect all goalies, all Yankees, and any chase figures I can get in all sports except basketball.
And if anyone wants to get rid of Transformers HD at a good price.....:D

Nice SP and BR collection there Chugga. Everytime I see a collection of both regs and variants I'm amazed that someone has actually gone through the hunting and searching to put that together.

I've had to change my DLP bulb twice since I've had the TV...the first time it was covered, the second time a lightning bolt blew it out. But both times I just went safe and rebought the whole thing.
Personally, I wouldn't mess with just the bulb. But I'm sure you can find a tutorial somewhere online.

Same boat here - it looked so good when history channel showed it a few weeks ago in HD - I'm thinking 1 of 2 things:
- we'll see an announcement or an unlikely release around fathers day
- or the more likely thing is that we will see it come out around the same time as the sequel starts on HBO, which I think is sometime in 2009

I'm loving the B2G2 going on at Gamestop/EB still. Picked up 4 more yesterday - Shooter (HD-DVD), Pan's Labyrinth (HD-DVD), Top Gun (HD-DVD) and Talladega Nights (BR) for $34 total. Haven't gotten in on all the Hollywood Video madness, there's only one or two stores around me that have survived and I'm not willing to travel that far to see what's left. Anyways, seems a lot of people really did unload their HD-DVD's at Gamestop over the last few days when they announced they would no longer buy them back - 3 stores near me have more HD-DVD's than they've ever had before, actually a really decent selection.
Rumor is that Gamestop/EB are indeed not going to carry DVD's at all anymore and that starting tomorrow they will be Buy 2, Get 4 free on all previously viewed DVD/HDDVD/BD.

Watched American Gangster yesterday. Actually enjoyed the movie more the second time around.
PQ was unimpressive, though. I know this was the "feel" of the movie, but it was what it was. Clean, but drab, lacking in detail at some points.
I'd say the reviews that gave it a 7 were right on.

i've been eyeing a harmony 550 and i'm wondering how easily it will handle 2 TVs, cable box and logitech surround sound system? (i'll know i'll have to stick with my ps3s bluetooth remote)
What i mean is, how easily can you change the inputs on each of the devices? Is it a matter of pushing a button, or going through a few menus to get to what you want to do, etc.
I've never had any experience with a harmony before but i'd like to know more about it.

Microsoft nixes HD DVD drive for Xbox 360
Posted by Erica Ogg
Microsoft will end production of the external HD DVD drive for its Xbox 360 video game console, according to a report by the Associated Press.
The company said it would, however, continue to offer warranty support for the peripheral.
"HD DVD is one of the several ways we offer a high definition experience to consumers and we will continue to give consumers the choice to enjoy digital distribution of high definition movies and TV shows directly to their living room, along with playback of the DVD movies they already own," Blair Westlake, a corporate vice president of Microsoft's media and entertainment group, said in a statement.
The drive, which currently costs about $130, was intended as Microsoft's answer to Sony's PlayStation 3 console, which contained an integrated Blu-ray Disc drive.
Microsoft is just the latest top-tier tech company to abandon the failed high-definition disc format. Along with Toshiba, Intel, and NEC, Microsoft was one of the most prominent supporters of the standard. Toshiba said last week it would no longer make HD DVD players. Wal-Mart Stores, Best Buy, and all the major movie studios have all now said they will exclusively support Blu-ray.
The biggest proponent of Blu-ray, Sony, now stands poised to become the standard bearer of HD video mostly because of its strategy in including Blu-ray playback capability into the PS3. It's unclear if Microsoft now plans to make an attachable Blu-ray player for the Xbox 360.

I have a 550 and it works great. I use it to control my TV, cable box, DVD, player, and home theater. Just push a button and it flips all the inputs around as necessary. You may have to do some customization to get everything perfect, but it is easy to do through the Harmony menus.

No you may not have There Will Be Blood on HD DVD :o
Paramount Nixes 'There Will Be Blood' HD DVD
Though Paramount has yet to detail its Blu-ray transition plans, it looks like at least one of its previously-announced HD DVD titles won't be hitting store shelves as originally planned.
Announced just last week, the April 15th release of 'There Will Be Blood' would likely have been among the biggest titles to hit HD DVD this Spring, but following Paramount's announcement late Thursday that it will re-embrace Blu-ray, the title has quietly been removed from from the studio's official media website.
At press time it wasn't clear whether the cancellation was a direct result of Paramount's move to Blu-ray. As we've previously reported, the studio has yet to provide a timetable for its first Blu-ray releases, nor has it commented on the fate of its upcoming HD DVD slate.
Notably, although 'There Will Be Blood' has been removed, Paramount still lists over a half a dozen HD DVD titles for release through early Spring. Here is a complete list of previously-announced Paramount/DreamWorks titles that remain officially scheduled as of this writing:
February 26: 'Beowulf'
March 4: 'Into the Wild,' 'Things We Lost in the Fire'
March 11: 'Bee Movie'
March 25: 'The Jack Ryan Collection,' 'The Kite Runner'
April 1: 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street'
Needless to say, we'll keep you posted on any official announcements from Paramount as they come in.

Polk makes better speakers then subs but that should be good for an Apt. I wouldnt put in your home HT.
Probably about the same..
Great price tho.

so a couple years ago i bought the first 4 seasons of 24 on dvd. I never got around to watching anymore than the first couple episodes of season 1.
I decided to try to take the other 3 to wal*mart and trade em for some blu's, walked in, found out they were worth 50 bucks a piece. Lady told me to go pick out what I wanted. I got back up front and she said without a reciept they couldn't do anything.
I used to work for wal*mart and I don't remember them every turning anything down. How are BB and CC with taking back dvds sans reciept. I have a couple of my 5 free I wanna go trade also when they get here.

I went to my local Hollywood yesterday and they were listed as $14.99. There previously viewed new release SD DVDs were also $14.99 or 2 for $20.00. I picked up
picked up Stardust, Smoking Aces, V for Vendeta, and Constintine on HD and when they rang up they rang up 2 for $20.00 just like the New Release SDs. The only thing that sucks is there were in Standard DVD cases. They did have the HD case cover art though so I just picked up some replacement HD Dvd cases off of Ebay.

I got lucky at a HV by me, I guess they were one of the first stores to get HD. They had a stack of the original cases and I asked what he was doing with them, he said he was just gonna throw them out. So I walked out of there with about 30 cases....lol

i was able to return a movie to Best Buy without a receipt, but it did have the Best Buy price tag sticker on it.
Wal Mart has become stricter with what they'll accept back without a receipt.

Slightly off topic, but has anyone in here seen the 1990 Irish mob flick State of Grace?
Holy crap was this movie awesome. Gary Oldman was spectacular. Not to mention Sean Penn, Ed Harris, John Turturro, Robin Wright, Burgess Meredith and John C. Reily.
I hope somehow this makes it blu-ray someday.
I'd honestly put this in my top 3 mobster movies of all time.

Technically what you are doing is illegal. With people buying things for Ebay and off the Internet, stores have become much more strict in their return policies. Many stores only allow you so many returns within a time period now.
BB and CC are likely more strict with their returns than Wal-Mart is. You could try Target as well, but I don't know if you will have any luck.

Well, I was just trying to think of another department store place that would probably still carry the sets and might take them back. I'm not surprised they are strict about it as well. Most places really do require that you have a receipt anymore.

Need an opinion. A local FS has a HD A30 opened for $75.00. Should I get it as a back up? Is there still the five free movie deal? And if I should buy it do I get the firmware update right away or will it always be available?

For $70, yes buy it.
Yes, the 5 free are still available, but I don't know if you can get them with an open box purchase or not. 5 free is available on purchases in Canada until the 28th and must be received by the end of March.
You can always download the firmware update to your computer and leave it. I've heard that 2.0 can cause problems with the A30 and A35. I've held off on updating my A35 for the moment.

Yep lots of great info in here. Most of the big news, developments, and deals get posted in here. This place is pretty "n00b" friendly too, as opposed to some of the other sites that are more specialized.
I always come here first and explore outward.

Picked up 30 Days as well but I had to pass of Beowulf. I enjoyed it in theaters but it's probably one of those movies that I can only watch once. I was hoping that Darjeeling was going to be an HD release, but I guess it's coming later on.

Question for the HD DVD crowd....I know a sales manager who works at Best Buy. I was there today shooting the breeze with him and he mentions he has a new HD DVD player in box that he got as a gift a little while ago that he has no use for. I tell him I'm interested and ask how much he wants to sell it for. So he says whatever he can get. I asked him which model # it is (he's going to check for sure and get back to me tonight), but he said he thought he remembered a W and a D...I'm guessing it's the Toshiba D-2 probably.
So I offered him $50 and he said sure. I'm supposed to get it from him on Friday.
Is this a good deal for this player new in box? I know nothing about it other than it doesn't do 1080p, which is fine with me. I figured what the hell for $50 to have another backup player.
Thanks

If it's the D2, it's just a rebranded A2. $50 is a steal for it. :)

Wow, for a company to admit their balls are in another company's sling because of money they received just gives me ****** chills. Dreamworks HAS to be kicking themselves for taking a bribe to go HD DVD exclusive and then for it to die shortly thereafter. *cringe*
DreamWorks waiting for cue from Toshiba on Blu-ray
LOS ANGELES, Feb 26 (Reuters) - DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc said on Tuesday it was locked in an exclusive deal to distribute DVDs on Toshiba Corp's HD DVD format even though the Japanese electronics maker plans to quit the technology.
"We have a partnership with Toshiba and have an obligation to see this through," DreamWorks Chief Executive Jeffrey Katzenberg said on Tuesday.
"As you know, we have been well-compensated for our support. It really is in their court at this point to really declare what the next step will be. We're poised either way to jump into the marketplace when the conditions are right to do so," he said

If I were Toshiba...I couldn't see a reason why I'd just let Dreamworks go to blu-ray. Unless the blu-ray group paid up. Would seem awkward if a "good faith" type thing popped up where Toshiba just said "Go ahead," ... out of competition now or not.

FYI, its the Canadian bilingual copy so if you don't like the additional french text, you might not want it. Disk wise it's the same as the US copy.

Why? They probably received more money going HD DVD than they'd make selling BDs all year long. They're laughing all the way to bank.
I have no doubt that Toshiba will tell them to go ahead and produce BDs very soon.

Can't really think of anything extra I'd have to trade right now...unless you need any videogames. As far as the text, is it just on the disc? As long as there's not like forced French subtitles, I don't care if there's french text on the disc itself.

It kinda looks weird....cause on the detail....the price they say you are getting for free...is the retail price....not the actual price of the Blu Ray....none of them are actually like $38.95. They are more like $28.95. So basically....I got all of the above titles...for $15 each....not too damned bad.
But yeah....I'm just happy to get some "newly released/not even out yet" Blu Rays as part of a BOGO. I cannot complain one bit.

I don't think this is accurate. Either Anchorman or Old School or both are Dreamworks, too.
There's a big difference between Dreamworks SKG (their movie division) and Dreamworks Animation. Toshiba gave Dreamworks as a whole $150m. Jeffrey's comments only pertain to Dreamworks Animation (not Dreamworks SKG) which thus far has only released 1 HD DVD: Shrek 3. Bee Movie is next. After that who knows what they have planned. Paramount and DreamWorks SKG were covered by the $50m that went to Viacom. DreamWorks Animation separately received $100m to release on HD DVD (they hadn't released anything on either format until that point).
