There's a big difference between Dreamworks SKG (their movie division) and Dreamworks Animation. Toshiba gave Dreamworks as a whole $150m. Jeffrey's comments only pertain to Dreamworks Animation (not Dreamworks SKG) which thus far has only released 1 HD DVD: Shrek 3. Bee Movie is next. After that who knows what they have planned. Paramount and DreamWorks SKG were covered by the $50m that went to Viacom. DreamWorks Animation separately received $100m to release on HD DVD (they hadn't released anything on either format until that point).

ah, OK.

Wow, for a company to admit their balls are in another company's sling because of money they received just gives me ****** chills. Dreamworks HAS to be kicking themselves for taking a bribe to go HD DVD exclusive and then for it to die shortly thereafter. *cringe*

How would this benefit Toshiba in any way? I mean if I was Dreamworks, I would just not release anything and just master stuff for Blu-ray, so they could have a ton of movies ready for when the agreement expires.

Just signed up for Netflix. Give it a try with the free 14 day trial. American Gangster is a very long wait :(. Still got a pretty good list of movies I havent seen yet :)

Did you miss the 800 announcements that Netflix was moving to Blu-ray or did you not sign-up just to get HD-DVDs? Your comment about waiting on AG made me wonder.

Netflix is apparently already shifting people over from HD-DVD to DVD.

As a side note, AG wasn't nearly as good as I thought it would be. Enjoyable, yes, but not as amazing as it seemed it would be.

An insider on Blu-ray.com pretty much summed it up like this....

More like this:

Toshiba: We're dropping HD DVD, so you won't get the rest of your money.
Katzenberg: But we want the money, I don't care about Blu-ray.
Toshiba: Still not giving you any money, HD DVD is done.
Katzenberg: But you said...
Toshiba: Doesn't matter we dropped HD DVD.
Katzenberg: Damn, well I'll go to the press to make sure no one in Hollywood ever does business with you again...

... and here we are...

I guess I assumed they just paid the whole thing to DW up front, but I guess a series of payments is probably more likely. I can see both points, especially DW, if they want to try and get free money.

Just looked up TVserity and its free? Looks interesting. Im just trying to gather info before I buy an external HD for my system. Can you take Blu-Ray movies and HD-Movies and transfer them onto the HD. That way you have them saved there and can sell the movies off and not take up the space?

Also where can you get good quality High Def Movies to download online? Are they on TVserity or do you have to go elsewhere for them.

All info appreciated. Wanna get the most out of my system and I have a vacation coming up where I want to improve things.

TVserity is free. If you have a Blu-ray or HD-DVD Reader in your PC at home, you could rip them to your PC and then transfer them to your external drive. I don't think ripping BR/HD-DVD is as easy as ripping DVDs is and will require some digging on your part to figure out.

You could probably download high quailty movie rips off of a torrent site, but I'm just guessing. ;) Again, there is a bit of learning involved to know what you need to download torrents and what to look for to get a good copy. TVserity doesn't host any content.

I actually saw some HD-DVDs in my Walmart yesterday. Looked like they had some pretty decent titles still, but they all seemed to be full price still. No one around to ask, since it was midnight and you know how accurately things are priced at Walmart. Plus, they were tied down, so I couldn't even scan them myself.

It's possible to rip Blu-ray and HD DVD movies if you know how (I don't but I know where to get them from) but the PS3 doesn't support the files they are typically saved as. You can play them from beefy PC's but not directly on your PS3. The PS3 has a file size reading limit of 2GB anyway so it won't read them natively. A way around that is looking for HD movies that have been ripped and converted to WMV files which are smaller than 2GB and which the PS3 will now read since the latest firmware.

Also where can you get good quality High Def Movies to download online? Are they on TVserity or do you have to go elsewhere for them.

Most HD movies are available on private torrent sites and on newsgroups.

Some info you might find helpful Toight....

The PlayStation 3 2.10 update is here, bringing with it not only Blu-ray Profile 1.1 support (which adds picture in picture among other things), but DivX and WMV playback as well. Unfortunately, DivX support means DivX support, and doesn't include XviD as some of us hoped according to readers includes XviD support, but the files we have tested don't work at all. We threw our normal battery of files at our PS3, and came to the conclusion that it's not quite as good as the Xbox 360 implementation. Here are our notes. DivX and WMV play back fine. Just as they claimed, the PS3 now can play back DivX files and WMV files. No problemo.

Most XviD files work, some don't.

Streaming only works off of Windows Media Player 11 shares, not Windows Media Connect or SMB (regular Windows folder sharing). This one could be a biggie. The PlayStation 3 doesn't actually support SMB network shares, which is the default Windows folder sharing network protocol that both Linux and OS X understand. This means you're going to have to install Windows Media Player 11 (or something similar, like Orb or TVersity) in order to stream video from your home computer. Windows Media Connect, which sits on our Windows Home Server that housed most of our video files, didn't work. WMP11 did.

You can play files off a burned CD/DVD. If your PlayStation 3 isn't connected to a network, or if it's hooked up to a Wi-Fi network that's too slow to stream big files without dropping out, you can burn your flicks to a DVD. This is a hassle, but ensures that your movie experience won't be interrupted by someone microwaving popcorn.

The quality is pretty good. When we got the network streaming to work and found a compatible DivX file out of all our XviDs, playback was smooth and (for the most part) artifact free.

Video dimensions stretch well. The PS3 knows exactly what aspect ratio your files are and stretches them to fit your screen without distortion. The 360 couldn't quite handle that without a little coaxing.

The first time you play back a WMV file, you need to activate WMA playback first. Not a huge deal, but kind of a pain that you have to go to the System Settings screen and activate WMA playback before you can watch any WMV file that uses the codec.

Playback controls are gimpy. This isn't the fault of the new DivX support, but of the way the PS3 handles all video playback. It's usable, but it's not as polished as the Xbox's (which wasn't all that great to begin with.) UI isn't Sony's strong suit.

It's not all bad news though, as the PS3 is actually entirely DivX certified—unlike the Xbox 360. This means that the console natively supports the codec, so games can play back DivX files as their in-game cut scene movies. However, this fact doesn't help out the rabid downloader that's expecting it to play back most of his media files—like the Xbox 360 does. If you're looking for a machine to replace that aging Xbox Media Center (XBMC), the 360 is the current winner.

Not for all...but you are correct for this one. Soderberg intentionally shot this on film to replicate the 70's look in terms of grain. Course I watched this one on Blu and it looked pristine imo so maybe it's a HD-DVD thing.

Not for all...but you are correct for this one. Soderberg intentionally shot this on film to replicate the 70's look in terms of grain. Course I watched this one on Blu and it looked pristine imo so maybe it's a HD-DVD thing.

I have it on blu, too, and thought it looked good considering the way it was shot.

I get the overall jist of that saying....but I never understood why.....because it isn't true.

Yes....every hour...on the hour...somewhere in the world it would be 5 o'clock. But not for the other 59 minutes. It would be 5:01....5:02. The time zones fluctuate by the hour...not the minute. So for example....it's 12:40 EST right now.....no where in the world is it currently 5:00......the closest would be 5:40...or even 4:40.

I also have no idea why I just thought about that or why I even bothered to type it all out

Interesting...

Ironic -- Warner is the last studio announcing HD DVD titles, and they are the ones who started the avalanche that resulted in the format's demise.

In any case, they've slotted stand-alone versions of 'Ocean's 11' and 'Ocean's 12' for May 20.

I think I have a Belkin at home. I really don't know anything about UPS systems. I just know I read on AVS that it was a must for a rear projection TV like I have. Supposed to prevent damage to the bulb. I bought mine from CompUSA a while ago.

I have no idea if mine is good bad or whatever. I do know that it works and keeps my stuff powered on long enough for me to turn it off and let it cool down, which is really like a minute or two. The one I have for my PC on the other hand beeps and then dies in about 5 seconds flat. Long enough to go "Uh oh" and that is about it.

Rumor has it that Cloverfield will arrive on BD on April 22nd. However, the extra content has been scrapped.

http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/11423

A lot of people worked hard for over a month creating some amazing extra features for the HD release of "Cloverfield." At first it looked like not many consumers would see these features, as the release was planned for HD-DVD like Paramount's other recent titles. But now that Toshiba's HD-DVD format is dead, Paramount is scrambling to release "Cloverfield" on Blu-ray - on the original HD-DVD street date. As a result, the current belief is that there's not enough time to program all the extra features (including lots of new story stuff, along the lines of the viral campaign's backstory) in time for the Blu-ray release, and all this great work will be scrapped."

With all the cool viral marketting stuff they did, the loss of those extras sucks. :(

But I'm sure we'll see the double dip version in time...

Yeah, FYE is generally high, but I look at it this way.

If they have a new release priced at $34.99 (which is what No Country For Old Men will be)...then they'll have it on sale the first week for $29.99 (which is what Best Buy will have it priced at.)

Then add the 10% off I get with my FYE card, and if I'm basically getting it for less than Amazon price after shipping. Combine that with paying with store credit and it's a decent deal.

Plus they have an OK selection of used movies, some priced between $16-$20 that I pick through every now and then....also saving 10% on each one with my discount card.

But yeah, I'd never pay $39.99 for a movie there even with credit and the 10% off.

I guess I'm in the minority. I could honestly care less about special features. I thought Man on Fire was the perfect disk. Let me pick audio, let me watch the movie. I'm a sucker for previews (love them, even if I've seen them) and I like blooper reels but everything else - PiP, commentary, how to, making of, mini games, all of that stuff is kinda "meh" to me. I'll never watch it, and then to top it off half the time all of that stuff isn't even in HD.

I just want to see Cloverfield on Blu-ray....the thing could ship in a paper sleeve and I'd be good. I actually wish studios would do this more if it meant getting movies out on time. Take the Matrix box set for instance, I've been waiting a year for that thing when all of the stuff that has made me wait this long @$$ time is stuff that I won't even look at, ever.

JaylisJayP
02-29-2008, 03:30 PM

But I basically sold it for the same exact amount as what it cost for me to get a brand new 40g....plus I got all the Sony rewards points for ordering one....win/win for me. If the 5 Free offer was still going...that would have even been better...but alas...it's not valid any more. And Manny....got the 60G version with all the bells and wistles....can play all his PS2 games for his kids...and still saved $100 by buying it from me instead of Target.....win/win for him. Everyone's happy :)

Im a HD noob. Im considering buying an HDTV soon. If I do and I plug my cable box into it I will NOT be seeing things in HD correct? There has to be both a HD tv and an HD broadcast for that right? If however I have a HD tv and an HD DVD player the HD DVDs will obviously be in HD. What if I play a regular dvd in my HD dvd player? Will it upgrade the picture? What about xbox 360. Do I need any special cables to hook it up to an HD tv/see it in HD?

As far as tv feeds, you will need to be watching an hd channel in order to see hd. The sd channels will probably look a little worse.

Cables you need either component (the red blue and green) or hdmi. hdmi being the better choice :)

Yes, your HD DVD or Blu-ray player will upconvert the picture. How well it upconverts will depend on the player.

What about xbox 360. Do I need any special cables to hook it up to an HD tv/see it in HD?

Assuming you have the Pro or Premium bundle, the component cables that came with it will do just fine. Just be sure to flick the switch on the cable for HD.

Since you have the Halo 3 version, you have the option to use the component cables that came with it or you can use the HDMI port. You can pick up a cheap HDMI cable at www.monoprice.com. HDMI would carry both sound and picture.

edward SCISSORHANDS - yes if you can find it cheapish - it's a FOX catalog title so it runs $34.99 at brick and mortar stores.

Black Snake Moan - haven't seen it

Blade Runner (a must anyway, awesome movie) - yes PQ is insane

Fifth Element. - The remastered one is absolutely worth it. Stunning PQ, fun unique movie

Disturbia - Good PQ, sleeper movie I enjoyed it. I'd say pick it up if you can find it for $15 or less

Closer - Haven't seen it

Layer Cake - Definite buy, one of the best looking titles on blu and a cool-ass flick.

Bought a 1080p Panny for the living room. Pretty much was going to get an LG 720p but comparing the two in person was night and day.... I don't think it had much to do with 720p vs 1080p as much as Panny just makes a better Plasma, beautiful picture. Samsung puts out a nice picture too. Gonna set it all up tonight.

Other than Pioneer, whose plasmas I find very overpriced, Panny makes the best plasmas on the market today. Just make sure you take it off torch mode (vivid) when you set it up.

You should also have a 100 hour break-in period as well... and don't forget to stretch 4:3 content.

Haha, yeah... Pioneer seem a little priced to the extreme, once I saw the prices I didn't pay much attention but they did look good from what I did see.

I took it off Vivid and content is stretched, I won't be using this TV for gaming so I don't think burn-in should be a problem. Anything else I can do to avoid it?

It carries picture and sound only to receivers that can decode it properly. Otherwise it usually only produces picture. Some HDMI enabled television's and surround sound receivers can only do one.
I do not believe the Xbox comes with an optical cable but they are fairly cheap at RadioShack, and don't get suckered into buying the expensive monster versions unless you're going to be running it several feet.

Make sure that your Xbox has an HDMI port (the earlier ones do not, and I didn't see which edition yours was). here's a link to one of the cheapest dual HDMI enabled 7.1 surround sound systems on the market.

Just watched Justice League: The New Frontier and 30 Days of Night. Justice League immediately shot up to my favorite animated comic movie. (against the likes of Ultimate Avengers, Iron Man, Dr. Strange, etc). I hate DC but the movie was awesome. 30 Days of Night was solid too, it was one of the first horror movies I've liked in a long time. Mainly because it actually made sense. If the dude from scream comes to my town I'm going to go out and buy a shotgun and kill the bastard. If Jason shows up in my town I'm booking the first flight out of town. But the people in this movie simply didn't have options...AT ALL. They were stuck and they were screwed. Made for a good movie.

I guess I can't fathom using the TV for anything other than just a monitor:D.(since most of them have inadequate speaker systems). Watched We Own the Night last night. Thought the movie was decent enough, but not really a blockbuster like the previews made it out to be. Surprised that Joaquin Phoenix carried so much of the movie. I like him more as an actor now.

PQ for the movie was really good in my opinion. One of the best I have seen. Audio was fine, but again, this is a dialouge heavy movie, so it doesn't really test your surround sound setup. What was there sounded good though.

Special features looked terribly lame from the 5 minutes I spent looking at them.

Universal ends HD DVD support with March 18 releases

Universal Studios Home Entertainment's support of HD DVD finally has an end date of March 18. Ironically enough, the studio most loyal to the now defunct high definition format will close its multi-hundred run of releases with Atonement.

Previously we were led to believe Charlie Wilson's War would bring a close to HD DVD at Universal after the studio had released cover art and disc specs prior to an official title announcement. Now Universal has removed any sign of an HD DVD version of Charlie Wilson's War from their website, passing the last title honors to Atonement.

Universal's decision may have been influenced by Paramount's move last week. Rather than draw out HD DVD for another month or two, Paramount chose to abruptly end their support with Things We Lost in the Fire and Into the Wild on March 4. Other planned HD DVD titles such as Bee Movie, Sweeney Todd, The Kite Runner, The Jack Ryan Collection, There Will Be Blood, and Cloverfield were canceled. It's widely believed all these titles will appear on Blu-ray Disc by this summer.

Universal has dropped no hints as to when they'll announce their first Blu-ray Disc title, other than to say they will be supporting Sony's high definition format and are working on getting titles ready for release. We'll be sure to inform you of the big announcement once it's made.

They had nothing else announced coming out that I wanted anyway to be honest...hopefully they transition very quickly over to blu-ray.

What's going to suck is the dark peroid for Universal and Paramount/Dreamworks when they're not releasing on either format.

Finally sat down and watched Traffic HD DVD last night, and I can see why some people avoid this title based on horrific PQ reviews. All I have to say is, for the Mexico scenes, yeah it's pretty unremarkable...but it's not going to look any better on blu-ray or any other future format. That's how the movie was shot...you can tell it's not a bad transfer when you get to some of the later scenes with Douglas and Topher Grace, it's very crisp and detailed.

Quick interview from the Toshiba CEO.... man what a snake. I love the part where he says you won't be able to tell the difference between HD DVD and their super up-converters. Why didn't you just do that in the first place and save yourself and the consumers a hell of a lot of time, money and trouble?

Wall Street Journal (WSJ) recently talked with Toshiba CEO Atsutoshi Nishida about life after HD DVD.

---

WSJ: When did you first start thinking about withdrawing from the HD DVD business?

Mr. Nishida: When Warner [Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros.] announced its support for Blu-ray on the 4th of January. We took a little time before reaching a final decision, so we could give people a chance to voice their opinions and we could consider all the ramifications and consequences of pulling out, such as how it would affect consumers and us.

WSJ : Most industry observers had expected the format war to continue for a while longer. Why did you decide to pull out so quickly?

Mr. Nishida: I didn't think we stood a chance after Warner left us because it meant HD DVD would have just 20% to 30% of software market share. One has to take calculated risks in business, but it's also important to switch gears immediately if you think your decision was wrong. We were doing this to win, and if we weren't going to win then we had to pull out, especially since consumers were already asking for a single standard.

---

Toshiba will continue to produce standard DVD players. They believe they can still make a difference. "What people don't realize is that Hollywood studios are going to release new titles not just for Blu-ray but for standard DVDs as well, and there are a far greater number of current-generation DVD players out there. If you watch standard DVDs on our players, the images are of very high quality because they include an "upconverting" feature. And we're going to improve this even more, so that consumers won't be able to tell the difference from HD DVD images. The players would be much cheaper than Blu-ray players too. Next-generation DVD players are in a much weaker position than when standard DVD players were first introduced." Nishida said.

When asked about video downloads he replied "That's what we're hoping. We've been developing technologies in this area already, but now that we don't have the HD DVD business, I want to put even more energy into that."

Picked up Beowulf, Top Gun and Elizabeth: The Golden Age from BB sale for $58. Do the in-store pick up to save yourself on shipping also.

I finally popped in Top Gun over the weekend and was very impressed with both the PQ and AQ - looked and sounded great, except for a few overhead shots of some of the jets that must have been stock footage (they don't take you out of the experience though) - anyways, a fantastic release and should be in everyones collection - IIRC the last SD-DVD release of Top Gun was pretty poor visually.
Checking out a few other recent HD-DVD pickups that I got over the weekend led me all over the spectrum: The GOOD: Pan's Labyrinth - OMG! Perfect picture and audio, amazing reference quality all around IMO. The BAD: Old School:Unrated - awful picture quality - the worst I've seen by far - really, really soft - colors muted beyond recognition, no pop at all, surrounds are almost non-existent (not that they really need to be for this film).

the movie wasn't anything extra, story could have been told in a half hour episode of JH storyteller.

Universal ends HD DVD support with March 18 releases

I'm glad they finally set a day... hopefully Warner takes a cue and cancels it's remaining HD DVD titles now as well.

Hopefully it doesn't take Uni too long to get up to speed on BD-J authoring...

Just got done watching Live Free or Die Hard. What an amazing movie. 2nd best movie in the series. Of course there is no way they could beat the first. Bruce Willis is one of my favorite action stars and he can still get it done. I hope for another one in the future because this movie left me wanting more!

Justin Long was very good in it as well. He blended well with Willis and brought even more comedy into it. Kevin Smith's role was also great even though limited.

Give this movie a 8 out of 10 and is a must watch for those who havent seen it yet. I definetly need to get the boxed set now.

30 Days of Night has to be one of the most violent movies ever. I loved it but my gf was repulsed. the ax to the neck was hard to watch and it looked totally legit.

That's exactly why I loved it. It was nice to finally see a real horror movie released with kick ass violent brutality and no slap stick humor.

Yeah the cartoon movie. UK import. I popped it in my PS3 on my lunch break at home and it looks really nice. Not much LFE from the soundtrack but it sounded pretty good. The vibrancy of the colors was very nice too.

Too bad it was such a let down of a movie. :(

Is it at least the unrated version where spike or sparkplug swears?

I thought I read somewhere that special features were pretty non existant on the blu release. Is that the case?

Let down of a movie? I'd say it was more of a shocker, balls-to-the-wall film. I applaud the executives at the time for taking such risky steps in their franchise.

Btw...that Blu TF Movie...me likey!

Yeah just like HDD's review said, there aren't any extras on there. Which is fine by me. Unless extras are in HD I don't want to watch them anyway.

I just really want Glory....I've waited since February 07 to see Glory in high def (when it was SUPPOSED to be released) but still nothing. With the Shawshank Redemption slated for later this year the only other movie that I can honestly say I am desperate to own on HD (aside from the obvious LOTR, Star Wars, etc) is Glory.

The worst part was, was how many times he had to swing the axe on a couple people. I mean after you've killed like 5 people with an axe you'd think he could probably take the last guys head off with one clean swipe....but no, he'll need about 4 attempts.

To me the most shocking/freaky moment of the entire movie was ----- spoiler ----- when they find that little girl vampire. Just looking at her freaked me out. Far more then alot of the Japanese horror movies where they randomly include some freaky looking kid, those kids never scare me, but that little girl randomly eating that woman and then saying she was done with that one like she was some kind of toy was like "holy crap". Not to mention when she kool-aid's out of the door and attacks everyone. But really the shocking part was that they actually killed her. You rarely if ever see a child killed in movies regardless of if they are vampires or not. Kids getting killed on screen is a big no-no. But they had no problem with it, and in my opinion it made the movie better as you could see everyones grief in having to do it ----- end spoiler. -----

But anyways good movie.
