I will, my credit score is pretty much crap though - 660'ish. I've also gotten 2 credit cards within the last two months so that will probably be a red flag to them.

White PS3 possibly coming soon? Apparently 40GB PS3s are being spotted minus the SM3 disc now as well.
http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/02/29/white-ps3s-shipped-due-out-possibly-in-march
Apparently, Circuit City employee's have been talking about receiving some mysterious shipments of late. These shipments are meant to replace the SpiderMan 3 bundle PS3 and come with the serial number "CECHH01". If you frequent Kotaku, you may recall they deduced this serial number was for the new White PS3. So, when those old bundles sell out or a certain date rolls around, expect the new color to hit shelves at $399. Now you can have two different color PS3's to create a sort of console nirvana in your house. Feng-shui, or something.

Can you confirm if you have any of the white PS3s in stock yet? They have the serial number CECHH01, if that helps any.
Seems like something Sony would have announced ahead of time, especially with their big retailer conference last week. Maybe they are the serial number for the 40GB w/o SM3?

Hmmm...well the other site did say it was a rumor, so the "Circuit City" employee could have been lying. I know Best Buy has huge marketing deals with Sony, so I would figure if there was one coming, your store would have them before CC. I suppose we will jsut wait and see.
On a related note, are there stacks of Wiis in the back? Supposedly everyone has been saving Wii stock for Smash Bros on Sunday. I think it is minimum 15 perstore, but most people are saying that Best Buy should have like close to 100.

The HD war was finally decided a few weeks ago, while LucasFilm has been working with this new release for probably months ahead of the upcoming release of Crystal Skull. They had to make a decision to market the previous films in May (2 months away)...they simply had no time to release the films on Blu............YET!

as to that Revolution card offer above I read they do a hard pull on your credit
and to those saying I will pay off and cancel, if I'm not mistaken it is much better on your credit history to just cut up and toss the card after it is paid off than to actually cancel it

a hard pull?

On a credit report, when a third party looks at your credit score, this is called an inquiry. All inquiries, however, are not created equal. Some hurt your credit score, and some do not. An inquiry known as a soft inquiry does not affect your credit report, but a hard pull does.
Soft inquiry
A soft inquiry, or soft pull, is a term used to refer to an inquiry into your credit history that does not adversely affect the credit score. Often, you are not even aware that there has been a soft inquiry on your credit report. For example, if you receive a solicitation in the mail offering you a credit card, the credit card company has most likely conducted a soft pull to see if you qualify. When mortgage lenders pre-approve you for a loan, they initially use a soft pull. Potential employers use it as a part of background checks, and your current credit card companies use soft inquiries to check up on you. Banks use them to verify that you are who you say you are when opening an account. If you check your own credit report, which you can do for free once a year, this is done with a soft pull. Most of the time, you do not even know when they occur, and they do not affect your credit report.
Hard pull
A hard pull on a credit report is different. It does affect your credit score. Anytime that you are actually getting a loan or a new credit card, the lender conducts a hard pull on your credit report. This stays on the record. It also lowers your credit score by about five points for six months. For this reason, it is important to guard your credit report from too many hard pulls. If you get a store credit card just to save 10 percent on a single purchase, you have hurt your credit score. That is probably not worth the 10 percent savings. Some banks even use a hard pull if you are opening a savings account, so be sure to check your potential bank’s policy. Additionally, the incentives that credit card companies offer for signing up may not be worth the hit to your credit score.
A good rule of thumb for your credit report is to try to avoid any inquiries that are considered hard pulls. By limiting them your credit will be in good shape and you can qualify for the best interest rate available to you when it comes time for you to apply for a loan that you truly need.

Yep. When you cancel a card, there is no way for a bank to tell if you canceled or the bank/company backing the card canceled, so it looks bad.
Also, not only do the hard pulls hurt, but just opening a new card/new line of credit it also lowers your credit score temporarily.

pretty much. getting a credit card or a hard pull isnt something that will haunt you the rest of your life. It knocks your score down a few points for a bit then once the 6 months period is over it goes back up.
If you dont plan on buying a home or getting a loan then its not a big deal. I have good credit but I really dont need it at this point. I have a Best Buy card I use for bigger purchases only and I always make my payments on time. Other then student loans I have no other debt and Ive paid all my past debt off.
I get 2 movies for $3.00 and it hurts my score about 5-10 points for 6 months. Its worth it to me.

Just sharing my opinion on all this...you never REALLY know what is or isn't going to mess up your credit when it comes to something like this.
Personally, I feel it's never a good idea to bite on a deal like this. Even if you cancel the card, your credit keeps track of things like how many cards you add and kill and how often you do this.
However, it's not going to hurt your credit to have another credit card if it's your second or third...but if it's your fifth or sixth...it will.
Seriously, if you're worried, for $50 it should be a no-brainer to avoid it. Even a half a point deduction will cost you so much more in the long run. Not just for home purchases, but for cars, future credit cards you really need, etc...
To each his own, but for me it's not worth it.

The worst part was, was how many times he had to swing the axe on a couple people. I mean after you've killed like 5 people with an axe you'd think he could probably take the last guys head off with one clean swipe....but no, he'll need about 4 attempts.
To me the most shocking/freaky moment of the entire movie was ----- spoiler ----- when they find that little girl vampire. Just looking at her freaked me out. Far more then alot of the Japanese horror movies where they randomly include some freaky looking kid, those kids never scare me, but that little girl randomly eating that woman and then saying she was done with that one like she was some kind of toy was like "holy crap". Not to mention when she kool-aid's out of the door and attacks everyone. But really the shocking part was that they actually killed her. You rarely if ever see a child killed in movies regardless of if they are vampires or not. Kids getting killed on screen is a big no-no. But they had no problem with it, and in my opinion it made the movie better as you could see everyones grief in having to do it ----- end spoiler. -----
But anyways good movie.
Dat cold ain't the weatha' .......dat's death approachin'.

Yeah really at this point I dont think it was worth it. I get 2 movies big deal. But its not going to kill me. Im not gonna get any credit cards in the future and I probably wont do a deal like this again. Just wanted to try it and see. Was an impulse thing really. Of course any little knock against your credit score even if for a short period of time isnt good.
Ill pay the card off right away then shred it. Ill probably keep it active for a few months then cancel it. After that Ill stay away from deals such as that. The Best Buy card I have is more then I really want for credit cards. Only reason I got it was to purchase the components to my parents and my entertainment sytems. I made sure I had the money in the bank though to pay it off. It will help me build my credit some.
I still just dont like credit cards though. I dont like buying things unless I can pay for them in cash. Thats just me though.
Live and learn I guess.

Your correct for the most part, but even an inquiry can look bad on your credit report - whether your declined or accepted.
Having five or six credit cards doesn't hurt your credit, actually if you have a low balance on them and had them for a while it's a good thing.
Whoever did go for this offer, as previously mentioned, don't cancel it right away - in fact, don't cancel it all. Shred it or just don't use it - cancelling it will hurt your credit, even if you cancel in a few months.
My opinion is if you don't need it, then don't do it - If your set with your mortgage and vehicle it really shouldn't matter much as you won't have any major credit reviews for large purchases anytime in the near future, but that is the only way I'd do it.

Ive been a Finance Manager for 22 years.Excessive inquirys hurt more then opening a account does for sure,However opening a account if your not loaded with inquirys is definately not going to hurt your borrowing ability. It would if you were opening a 50000.00 line or something crazy like that.If your going to shred the card make sure you cancel it though because even with no balances your outstanding ability to borrow money also hurts your score-Thats why you dont want to keep to many cards open that you have no intent of using.

Warner Targets June For 'Dirty Harry' Blu-ray Set
Tue Mar 04, 2008 at 11:00 AM ET
Dirty Harry fans, mark your calendars: Warner has set an early June Blu-ray arrival for all five of the Clint Eastwood vigilante classics.
Dubbed 'Dirty Harry: The Ultimate Collection,' and featuring all five films in the famous franchise ('Dirty Harry,' 'Magnum Force,' 'The Enforcer,' 'Sudden Impact,' 'The Dead Pool'), the long-awaited box set is due to fire on Blu-ray June 3, day-and-date with a set of new DVD re-issues.
As Warner has yet to issue a full media announcement, there were no tech specs or supplemental details at press time, but the studio has told us that each film in the series will be newly remastered, and that the box set will boast numerous bonus features.
There was also no word yet on whether the studio has plans to issue the five Dirty Harry films as standalone Blu-ray releases. Needless to say, we'll keep you posted.

Thats sucks because I would of picked one up this weekend if it did fall under it.
Some people have reported getting that coupon to work. Your best best is to try and go into the Best Buy and just attempt to make your purchase.
With really good luck, you will get a cashier that doesn't give a crap and it will work.
With minor luck, you will get a cashier that calls the manager and you get a manager that is willing to be reasonable and accept the fact that the PS3 is indeed a Blu-ray player regardless of the fact that it play PS3 games as well and that the coupon doesn't SPECIFICALLY exclude the PS3. Buying the Spider-Man pack, which highlights the fact that the PS3 is a Blu-ray player can only help your cause regardless if you want the movie or not.
Be nice and polite with the manager, but be firm in your belief that you should be able to use the coupon. If it deosn't work, then it doesn't work. You could always try another Best Buy as well.
Whatever you do, don't just call. It is way too easy for the manager to just dismiss you over the phone. Much harder to do when you are standing in line and making a logical arguement in front of other customers.

I haven't decided to go hunting yet today but there isn't a best buy within an hour drive that has it (which is odd for the title). I don't know it might have been pushed back, I don't want to go all the way to the super walmart just to come up empty.

Pioneer is also getting into the LCD game. It's first sets will use Sharp LCD panels.
It's really too bad that Pio will quit making plasma panels... they are the #1 makes hands down. If only the price was more in line with the average buyer. :( I had hoped to buy a nice big Pioneer plasma for the basement one day... I guess I'll go with a Panny now.

How is assassination of Jesse James?
worth a blind buy?
Not in my opinion. It was good - very well acted, I'm really starting to like Casey and he absolutely deserved the Oscar nomination for this role. PQ and AQ are great but it really seems to drag a bit in the middle of the film. It's suspenseful and well narrated by the storyteller but, in the end, it's not quite enough. It's a movie you'll only watch once.
*To add to that, there's a scene near the beginning with a train (no spoilers) that has the deepest bass I've yet to hear on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. I'm not sure it's the deepest bass out there on HDM but it's gotta be mentioned and it's just a cool scene.

HD DVDs demise seem to push Blu-ray prices up
What's New
By Henning Molbaek
FIRST ONLINE Mar 5, 2008
New data shows that the price of Blu-ray players has a upward trend after HD DVDs demise.
The data comes from pricegrabber.com that can show the average price of a given player on a given time.
TG Daily collected the data which shows a upward trend for Blu-ray players.
On January 1st 2008 (Before Warner chose Blu-ray) the average price of a Panasonice DMP-BD30K player was $401. On March 2nd it was up at $495. The Sony BDP-S300 shows a similar trend with a January price of $307 and a March price of $386. Many of the players were also sold with free Blu-ray movies in January but these offers has ended as well.
The only Blu-ray players that seems to have fallen in price in the period are DUO (Plays HD DVD and Blu-ray discs) players from Samsung and LG.

True it does, but then consumers just have to speak with their dollars in another way. Instead of buying all the movies to support your format, you only buy a select few or none, until market pressure drives prices down.
If they want Blu-ray to succeed and overtake DVD, then they will eventually continue to lower prices and offer better deals. Same thing happened with DVD compared to VHS.

I have no doubt that this is how it will playout... however, the process is now going to take that much longer just as it did with DVD.

It's the only way to go my friend, especially if you don't mind waiting a bit to get your movies.
I've saved anywhere from $5 to $20 on most of my HD DVDs and Blu-rays by ordering online whether it's from the USA or Canada.
Check these places out online... I tend to order the bulk of my movies through them.
www.amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com)
www.sigelectronics.com (http://www.sigelectronics.com)
www.hdaddicts.com (http://www.hdaddicts.com) (best for sales mostly)
Sig Electronics and HD Addicts are both in Canada so you need not worry about duty at the border. Amazon.com, providing your order is large enough, will 99 times out of 100 get past the border without duty. Plus there's no GST on orders from HD Addicts or Amazon. :)

It is better than you just being stuck with a HD-DVD player you no longer want. Circuit City could just as easily not do anything and people would eventually buy a Blu-ray player from them.
This way they encourage people to adopt them earlier and earn some goodwill, which CC could certainly use.

Unless they show pictures of this so called hanger, I am skeptical. Obviously you cant just stick some connectors onto a hanger and have it work. There would have to be some work done on it first. Dont get me wrong I am not a supporter of Monster cables or anything, but I think there is something behind the story that isnt being said.

Most people who bought an HD DVD player probably have a decent size HD DVD collection so trading it in for BR makes no sense to them
Its just a rumor and lets see where it goes.
Kinda strange they are not going to promote it but you have to ASK for the trade in?? Thats whats Weird about the whole thing. IF CC was doing this to help people buy BR players then why not promote it but instead people have to ask for them to do it.
I dont know.. Strange.

Circuit City discounts HD DVD for quick inventory sell-off
Also cuts price of Toshiba players
By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 3/3/2008
MARCH 3 | Circuit City is closing out its HD DVD stock and expects to be rid of the products within the month.
The chain is eager to start offering consumers Blu-ray Disc as the one choice for high-definition, believing that the end of format war should encourage mass customer adoption, spokesman Jim Babb said.
In one deal, valid between March 2 and March 8, Circuit City shoppers can purchase three $29.99-priced HD DVDs and get two HD DVD titles for free. Featured sale discs include Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s The Bourne Ultimatum and Knocked Up and Paramount Home Entertainment’s Transformers and Mission Impossible: III.
Additionally, at the chain’s Web site, Toshiba’s HD-A30 player is being advertised for $129, representing a $70 chop from already reduced pricing in January.
Shortly after Toshiba announced it was dropping support for HD DVD, the manufacturer started helping retailers sell off players with price credits. These cuts followed Toshiba’s widespread sales earlier in the year in an attempt to boost HD DVD following Warner Home Video’s exit from the format.
“We are in clearance mode, and we expect to go through the remaining inventory in the next few weeks,” said Babb. “We’ve said all along that it would have been better for consumers and retailers if we had started with one format. Now, the end of the format conflict will mean people can invest with a lot more confidence in gear that they know will be useful for years to come.”
Babb noted that Toshiba HD DVD players are still worthwhile products because of their ability to upconvert standard-definition DVDs to near high-def quality.
“The way they are priced makes them pretty attractive, and it upconverts your DVDs,” said Babb. “That makes them still an option for people.”
He didn’t specify whether the disappearance of HD DVD will necessarily grant Blu-ray wider berth on shelves. Yet Circuit City is hopeful that Blu-ray will catch on with mainstream customers.
“We certainly recognize that the future in this is Blu-ray,” said Babb.
They are going to discount them but them allow people to return them??

They're HD DVD sale is stupid. If they're really serious about clearing inventory they'd do a 50% sale on ALL titles and stop d--cking around with this little bit here, little discout there.
Sorry, 12 titles that have been in EVERY other sale...somewhat discounted from CC's inflated prices to begin with...won't move enough of the product to deal-savvy HD DVD loyalists.
They'll very quickly find they'll need to do much more if they want to sell off they're remaining HD DVD product.

Pioneer current makes their own panels... probably the best in the world, but only 3% of the market. All their current plasmas are Pioneer panels.
If the article is correct, the next generation of Pioneer plasmas will use panels made by Panasonic. So yeah, the next generation of Pioneer plasmas (or perhaps next year's models depending on how fast they move) with be Pioneer branded Panasonics. Although the electronics and such will still be made by Pioneer.

I did pick up Beowulf yesterday. Thx to you guys I seen that BB had it for sale at $20, and I had a $5 gift card so got the movie for $15dlvd (site to store pickup). I was watching it last night and I was so damn tired I passed out. I woke up an hour later and the movie was frozen!! I've never had this happen before on my HD player. I'll give it another look now to see if it was a disk problem or just a freak thing. But other then that, the movie was not too bad. I didn't realize it was an CG movie, I thought it would be just like 300 with live actors and CG backgrounds. Good action and FX make this movie a very glorified comic book made into a CG movie for me.

fyi... just because a press release was released today doesn't mean it's still good. these companies write these press releases a while back and then post it on their website hidden with a "Scheduled release date" so it doesn't show up to the public until that date checks around. Then anyone who access the companies press release section finds it.

Well if a movie sucks and the picture and audio quality are top notch then the picture and audio quality should get top notch ratings. Kenneth Brown over at hdd used to have a bit of this problem himself (until they later went back and cleaned up a few of his reviews) but basically a couple of online reviewers would let their view of a movie completely skew the rest of the movies ratings.
I don't go to highdefdigest or dvdtalk or dvdtown or where-ever to get reviews about the movie itself. Rottentomatoes gives me hundreds of reviews on a single movie....so don't review the movie, review the disk. And when you start letting your view of the movie get in the way of the review of the disk then theres a problem. Minor or not it's still something annoying to see a favorite film of yours get dogged because it was handed to the wrong reviewer and his hate of the movie bled through so deep that it took away an entire star from PQ and AQ.

I could definately see Warner backing out...look at their release schedule it's awful.
Bonnie & Clyde, One Missed Call, Sublime, Ocean's 11&12, PS I Love You, and Twister.
There isn't a title in that entire bunch that is going to break 10,000 (maybe not even 5,000) copies sold. Why even bother? I wouldn't be suprised if they call it a day after I Am Legend on April 8th. Theres honestly no reason what-so-ever to keep going after April 8th. Bonnie & Clyde is a catalog title and won't move, One Missed Call & Sublime are less than impressive horror movies that won't move, both of the Ocean's movies have already come out and the deals on them were so good chances are 90% of the people who wanted those 2 movies already have them, PS I Love You is a romantic comedy aka it's not moving, and Twister while a quality title is the last announced HD DVD as of right now and chances are most people have left the building by time it's out and also lets not forget the word "catalog".
They might as well just push I Am Legend up a week to April 1st and then say that is their last day of support for HD DVD. Not trying to hate on you HD DVD guys but it's worthless you are talking about 6 more titles, is it really worth the effort when Warner could be using their time doing more important things...like finally getting Batman Begins out, I mean damnit get it out already.

Jaylis, are you saying it should receive a higher rating on the presentation? I haven't seen it on Blu so I can't comment.
Not on the presentation, my initial thought was perhaps his "wrap up" and "recommendation" were off base since he didn't like the movie itself so much. But in hindsight, I know that doesn't exactly sound right. Maybe it was partly my bias for the movie that led me to contact him in the first place.
And in hindsight, his review itself was fine...I never had a major problem with his review, I really just wanted to start a dialogue and share my opinion (wrong or right)...and I was talking to him in the same tone I'm talking in right now....really trying not to be a jerk since I know these guys are probably bombarded with idiots telling them this and that all the time.
But this guy's responses from the first one were nasty, immature, unprofessional and just a total shock since I'd had discussions with other reviewers at DVDTalk before and they were all great.
Not trying to get into a debate on whether his review was right or wrong, or whether my opinion was right or wrong...just making a mention of the guy's off-putting tone in his responses. I would expect more from someone in that type of position.

must not click.......no real need to replace 550...........don't buy just because of deal.......
Also, I was thinking I was sending it to Canada as a package. That was apparently higher, and I didn't want the BR to get damaged. If you can send them in a bubble mailer for $3, I'd do that.
So like $25 if you are still interested PB. No biggie if you aren't. Just thinking I could help out.

Plus the motion sensor feature (backlight kicks on when you move the remote) is perfect for a dark movie room.
Thanks for the offer ewto, but I'll pass for now.... I have more Halo 3 figures to buy first before the kids get a new movie. ;)

Nope, no cradle and rechargeable battery, but my sectional has a little remote holder area in it anyway, so I don't think the cradle would work in there. Not sure it would fit or that I would be able to run power to it. The 550 does have a motion sensor in it though. My 550 features rechargeable batteries. Energizers seem to work just fine so far.

Doubt the 360 will feature an integrated BD drive. I'm sure it will be an add-on like the HD-DVD drive was. Can't read the article as it requires registration and I'm too lazy to sign up, so maybe it says something more specific.

Sony, Microsoft discuss Blu-ray for Xbox 360
By Chris Nuttall in San Francisco
Published: March 6 2008 18:50 | Last updated: March 6 2008 18:50
Sony is in talks with console rival Microsoft about offering a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360, according to a senior executive.
The Japanese electronics maker has until now touted Blu-ray as an advantage its PlayStation 3 holds over Microsoft’s console. Microsoft has backed Toshiba’s HD-DVD format and offered an HD-DVD drive that can be plugged into the 360.
But after Sony’s victory last month in the high-definition DVD format war, Stan Glasgow, Sony Electronics US president, said the two sides were now talking about Microsoft adopting Blu-ray.
A Blu-ray drive in a 360 would make Microsoft more competitive with the PS3, but it would also mean extra revenues for Sony’s electronics division. It would also add further cost to the 360, meaning a premium edition of the console could be necessary.
A Blu-ray drive could be incorporated in its top-of-the-range Elite Xbox, or Microsoft could again offer a drive as a plug-in peripheral.
Mr Glasgow, speaking at a media dinner, added that discussions were also taking place with Apple, which has not offered Blu-ray drives on any of its computers so far and has focused on digital media via downloads and streaming through devices such as its Apple TV.
The Sony president said he did not believe Blu-ray would be overtaken by high-definition content becoming available over the internet. Bandwidth limitations meant it was still available to only a few, he said, and consumers favoured disks they could own.
“Downloading will build over time, but this will be over a period of years,” he said.
Microsoft declined to confirm any talks, saying: ”We have made no such announcement. Games are what are driving consumers to purchase game consoles and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available.”
On Blu-ray pricing, Mr Glasgow expects prices of players to drop to as low as $299 by the end of the year. They currently cost $399 and higher. He feels the price of a player could fall to about $200 by the end of 2009.
The prices of Blu-ray players are not expected to fall as precipitously as they did with regular DVD players. The Blu-ray Association, the group controlling the standard, has yet to license it to Chinese manufacturers, who would be expected to drive down prices.

A 360 w/ a built-in BD player would mean my PS3 will be on ebay! Now the question is this: if we get a 360 w/ a BD player built-in, can we still plug our HD-DVD add-on into it?

But this guy's responses from the first one were nasty, immature, unprofessional and just a total shock since I'd had discussions with other reviewers at DVDTalk before and they were all great.
Not trying to get into a debate on whether his review was right or wrong, or whether my opinion was right or wrong...just making a mention of the guy's off-putting tone in his responses. I would expect more from someone in that type of position.
I think he was right. The review was great, Jaylis! What's the problem? He gives fantastic attention to both the movie and the BD itself. Way better than most reviewers.
I e-mailed this Orndorf fella, and he was very nice to me -- adult and mature, funny even. He says you were very insulting and baited him with poor research and thin arguments. He mentioned you "told" on him to the editors at dvdtalk. That's not cool. You didn't do that, did you? I could've sworn your profile says you're 30 years old.

Minor or not it's still something annoying to see a favorite film of yours get dogged because it was handed to the wrong reviewer and his hate of the movie bled through so deep that it took away an entire star from PQ and AQ.
understood..:)

So, um, the weirdest thing EVER happened to me.
Long story short, but I was in Target with the gf. She was fawning over Girls Next Door season 3, so I bought it for her ($22.99). Now, about a week later, I was perusing Circuit City, and I saw the same box set for $8 cheaper. PLUS I have some unused Circuit City gift cards. So I rebought it at Circuit City.
I gently pealed off the Circuit City price sticker, plopped it in a Target bag, and went to go return it to Target with my Target receipt.
So I get to Target and I'm like "I need to return this please."
She looks it over.
Her: "Did you open it?"
Me: "Nope."
Her: "Well I have to."
She gets out this MASSIVE pair of scissors. They're like clown scissors.
She MAULS open the package with the scissors. She pulls out the 3 superthin dvd cases in the box and rips open each one to verify the disc is in each one.
They are and, she processes the return, puts a giant return barcode right onto the box, and hands me my receipt.
This disc set is now DEAD. There is now one less Girls Next Door season 3 in this world.
Dude-- I was TERRIFIED when she started opening it. I was like trembling. I'm like if there's a disc missing, it's not my fault!!
The case didn't even look *****y or anything. It looked PERFECT. I've returned thousands of new DVDs in my life, and have never ever seen this.
I felt so bad for the disc set! They didn't deserve to go out like that.
Are they doing this to deter returns?
"Please don't hurt him. I'll take him back and give him a good home."

For those up north, FutureShop is offering a limited HD-DVD player exchange.
http://www.futureshop.ca/popup/bluray.asp?logon=&langid=EN
Future Shop Offers Solution for HD DVD Owners During Transition to Blu-ray
Trade in offer for HD DVD players; Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada recipients of returned players
(Burnaby, BC) March 7, 2008 - Future Shop, Canada's largest retailer and e-tailer of consumer electronics has introduced a transition option for Canadians affected by the end of the technology battle that left Blu-ray as the prevailing technology for home theatres. Approximately 35,000 Canadians have invested in HD DVD players and discs at various retailers since 2006 but Future Shop has created a practical solution to allow the transition to Blu-ray while still enjoying their existing HD DVDs.
"Future Shop recently announced the change to showcasing Blu-ray and liquidating HD DVD players," said Eric Stockner, Director of Merchandising, Home Theatre. "We recognize that some customers will jump into Blu-ray but others who invested in HD DVD, and started to build a library of movies, are interested in a transition and combo solution to the new Blu-ray home theatre and entertainment experience."
From March 7th to April 3rd, customers who own HD DVD players - whether purchased at Future Shop, or another retailer - are invited to return their HD DVD player to a Future Shop location and receive $100 off either an LG or Samsung Blu-ray / HD DVD Combo player.
"The Blu-ray/ HD-DVD Combo player is a win for customers as it allows them the opportunity to continue to view their HD DVDs while entering into the Blu-ray market," adds Stockner.
Returned HD DVD Players will be donated to Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada for use in their after-school and evening programs. There are over 700 service locations of the Boys and Girls Clubs across Canada.
For more information visit: www.futureshop.ca/bluray.
About Blu-ray
Blu-ray gets its name from the colour of laser that is used to read and write data. Current DVD technology such as DVD, DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD-RAM uses a red laser, but the new format uses a blue-violet laser. The advantage of a blue-violet laser is its shorter wavelength making it possible to focus the laser spot with even greater precision. This allows data to be packed more tightly and stored in less space, so in turn makes it possible to store more than five times more data on the same size disc as a CD/DVD. Therefore the little blue-violet laser used on Blu-ray discs allow more content, better sound, more effects, more excitement and more drama -- all in high definition.
