Well, I think that mostly due to the low scores on extras and the movie itself.
I think you enjoyed or loved the movie, it's worth a pickup at some point. :)

Yeah, seems as if this reviewer really hated the movie overall. While he didn't like it, he seems to forget that this movie pretty much put Will Smith on the map and also restarted the summer movie blockbuster trend.

IMO, when looking at reviews for HDM one need only look at the PQ and AQ.
Reviews for the movies themselves are better done elsewhere (rottentomatos), or if you've seen it yourself then you already know if you want to own it.
I never bother looking at the overall score anymore.

That's all I look at too. 4 stars for audio and video are fine with me for catalog titles. They pretty much have to be 4 stars for me to buy them depending on the movie.

For those up north, FutureShop is offering a limited HD-DVD player exchange.
http://www.futureshop.ca/popup/bluray.asp?logon=&langid=EN
This was a crap deal until they lowered the price on both dual players to $499 mid-day today.
So, you can basically get a dual player for $350 plus tax or $300 plus tax (you get a $50 gift card with the purchase of either player). Not a bad deal at all if you can live with a profile 1.0 BD player. :)

Just ordered Mummy, Mummy Returns and Scent of a Women from Buy.com. $13 each. They dropped prices on a bunch of movies. Couldnt pass up those 3 classics. Everytime I say I am not going to buy anything more something like this happens :( lol
Also American Gangster is almost $10 cheaper on buy.com and Casino Royal is $6 cheaper. I just bought them off there.
Not sure if there's a Best Buy near you but they have about 15 titles for $10.49 each, including both Mummies.

TARGET is the absolute WORST at returning/taking things back. Even with a receipt. I have never heard of an employee ripping open a DVD to check if the disc is there. That could have been put back on the shelf but instead it is now a defective item that has to be credited. Having worked at Target in the past, I know that isn't common practice.

http://www.futureshop.ca/popup/bluray.asp?logon=&langid=EN
This is too awesome.
Originally price at Future Shop - $799
Visions Price Match - $699 + 10% off the difference.
Price goes down to $499, go back to get the difference.
Now I'll get an extra $100 off since I'm still within the 30 day period and have my first player, a D1 unused so I'll bring that in. = $399
For those considering the LG I've been very impressed with mine. It's played every disc I've thrown at it and boot-up times are pretty good. It has a nice sleek look to it too. I use this one upstairs with the Panny plasma and get a beautiful picture. It won't decode all the HD audio codecs but if you're like me and use it for more casual viewing and not in the home theatre it won't matter anyway. The Samsung is crap.

Has anyone seen The Punisher blu-ray? I'm trying to get an idea of PQ...tier threads at Avs and High-def. digest have it pretty low on the charts...but review sites like dvdauthority and dvdtown seemed to rave about it.
Makes it hard to gauge.

Watched Beowulf tonight... I wouldn't call it aweful, but it's not a terrific movie either. PQ was terrific as was AQ.
One thing I'm learning about my LCD projector is that dark movies just don't show as well on it. A movie like Cars and it shines. A movie like Beowulf and something is lost. Perhaps I just need to cut down on the reflective lighting.
And of course I got a disk error close to the end. I restarted and everything worked out again, but I was having flashbacks to Children of Men.

Sometimes I read short reviews on Hi-Def movies here and I get confused.
I find that there are 2 things:
1) reviewing a movie in general
and
2) reviewing a Hi-Def title (movie, tv show, documentary, etc.)
Its quite obvious for the differences but for those that don't know. Reviewing a movie is just what you thought of the movie but reviewing a Hi-Def title should be more about reviewing more the PQ and AQ. Because after all, thats what Hi-Definition is all about.
I watch the movies on Blu-Ray and then I say to myself, damn, that was awesome in Hi-Def. But then others will say, that movie sucked!!!
Like the reviewer above who wished they rented POTC2. I thought POTC2 was ok also but its definitely the type of movie that deserves a Hi-Def release because it looks and sounds AWESOME on Blu-Ray. It makes great demo material for when you have guests over who you wanna show off your home theater setup to. So I'm glad I purchased it.
So yes, the movie itself was ok, entertaining but wasn't as good as the first but as a Blu-Ray release, its phenomenal.
Perhaps in the future, people can provide more details about what they thought of the actual Hi-Def release of the movie. Because I find that these reviews are just like reviewing the standard DVD movie release. But of course, you're welcome to provide whatever review you want. I just wanted to point out that, being in a Hi-Def forum here, it'd be helpful to future buyers what movies they should get on Hi-Def and what movies that should stick to standard-def.
I can think of a small handful of movies that are worthy of a release on Hi-Def but once they are released, either they rushed the transfer or something because the AQ and PQ is not up to par, however the movie itself was fine.
Sleepy Hollow for example. Great movie. Tim Burton in top form but those who are thinking about getting it on Blu-Ray, don't. Its only a tad step up from the original release. They didn't do a good job on it.
So when someone reviews a movie and says it was good, don't go nuts and tell yourself that you should get it on Hi-Def cuz someone said it was good. Find out from people who actually reviewed it as a Hi-Def movie.
Peace!

Good points.
I look at it like this...for 30 or so dollars....I want the gift wrapping and the gift to be good.
If it looks great..and sounds great....but is a POS film....then I just have a pretty box with a piece of **** inside of it. If it's a great movie....but the AQ/PQ is crap...then I have a diamond....covered in ****. Either way...not very appealing.
For what I'm paying...I want (and expect) both...good techincal details...and good content. So I'm all for the reviews that give both. I just hope that one doesn't influence the other in the reviewer's eyes.

I'm a little more forgiving when it comes to PQ...only because even lower-tiered HD movies look so much better than SD...and over the holidays when you could find these for $10-$15 each, it was absolutely worth the upgrade even for less than perfect 3-D images.

I was never a huge fan of Will Smith's comedic interludes as the "end of mankind" was seemingly taking place. I had hoped for a more "serious" film then what was given. Have never like ID. I didn't own it on DVD...and for $34.99...I damn sure won't own it on Blu Ray.

It does seem to have problems with my HD sat box from time to time, but I don't think that will be a huge concern as the basement is mainly used for movies.

Watched Saw 4 this weekend. I thought the PQ and AQ were both really good in this movie. There was one scene where the blacks were really crushed, but that was the only time I saw that happen.
I thought the storry was OK as far as a Saw movie goes. I realized as I got through the end of this movie that I think I'm done with this series. Not that they weren't good, but I think I'm just tired of the concept.
I think the writer's did a great job with writing this movie and making it work with the story of the previous 3 movies. I just think the concept is finally played out for me.
Again, PQ and AQ were both great. If you like the Saw movies, you will enjoy this one. If you haven't seen a previous Saw movie, I highly suggest watching the others before this one.

Had a chance to watch Equilibrium HD DVD last night and all I can say is wow. One of the most crisp, vibrant transfers I've ever seen. My first time seeing the movie, too, which is now one of my favorites.
I've always enjoyed Bale, but I can't remember when I've seen someone act so well with just the most subtle facial expressions.
This has quickly catapulted into my top 3 high-def discs that I own.

Future Shop lowered the price on the Panasonic I bought by $100 so went back and got a nice little discount. Man, it sure pays off to watch prices for 30 days after you buy new equipment.
Also, watched Tremors and good god what an amazing picture imo, felt almost like I was watching it for the first time. Why can't they make movies like this anymore....

Fox Prepping New 'AvP' Blu-ray with BD-Live, PIP
Mon Mar 10, 2008 at 04:00 PM ET
Tags: Disc Announcements, Exclusive HD Content, Fox (all tags)
There's no street date yet, but Fox says it is readying a Blu-ray re-issue of 'Alien vs. Predator' for the second half of 2008 that will include all-new PIP and BD-Live bonus features.
When asked to comment on recent rumors that the studio has been plotting a re-issue of 'AvP' to coincide with the April 15 Blu-ray debut of its sequel, 'Alien vs. Predator: Requiem,' a Fox spokesperson confirmed to High-Def Digest that a retooled 'AvP' is indeed in the pipeline for high-def, but that the title won't hit stores until sometime later this year.
Although the studio is still in the process of developing the supplements for the new version of 'AvP,' Fox VP of Worldwide Product Development and Production Sven Davison recently told Gizmodo that the title will be the studio's most technologically-advanced disc yet, making full use of the format's picture-in-picture and BD-Live interactive capabilities.
The only extra confirmed so far, however, is 'Alien vs. Predator vs. You,' an interactive BD-Live-based game that will allow multiple users to battle each other online, with the game's narrative woven into the storyline of the film as it progresses. (As previously reported, Fox first previewed the 'Alien vs. Predator vs. You" at last January's Consumer Electronics Show, but stopped short of issuing any further specifics.)
While this new version of 'Alien vs. Predator' marks the first confirmed BD-Live title from Fox, it's not likely to be the last, with the studio also telling Gizmodo that they are currently looking at three other major (but as-yet-unamed) franchises to receive a similar interactive-heavy treatment.
We'll keep you posted on Fox's future plans for its new version of 'Alien vs. Predator' as soon as they are officially confirmed.
In anticipation of an eventual announcement, we've added a new listing for 'Alien vs. Predator (Re-issue)' to our Blu-ray Release Schedule. Stay tuned!

Now full specs are in, and due to the feature film's 170-minute runtime and the volume of supplemental features, it will take two discs just to contain it.
Disc one is a BD-50 dual-layer disc with the main feature in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video and English DTS-HD Losslesss Master Audio 5.1 Surround (48kHz/16-bit), plus English Dolby Digital 5.0 Surround and French and Spanish Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono (192kbps) dubs, and English and Spanish subtitles.
Also on disc one is an Introduction by screenwriter Francis Ford Coppola, as well as a full-length audio commentary by Coppola.
Disc two is a BD-25 single-layer disc containing hours of bonus material, including the documentary "The Making Of Patton," two featurettes ("History Through the Lens: Patton: A Rebel Revisited," "Patton's Ghost Corps"), a "Production Still Gallery" accompanied by Jerry Goldsmith's complete musical score, a second "Behind the Scenes Gallery" accompanied by an audio essay on the historical Patton, and the original theatrical trailer.

My best buy is awful with price matching, they used to be good but now everything they price match has to be in "driving distance". Sounds like you buy locally only too, I have the same problem but my thing is it's boring shopping online... I actually don't mind going out and trying to find the movies I like... it's a hunt in a way. Yeah as discussed earlier I'm strictly against buying online (unless the sale is amazing). Hunting is pretty fun....it's almost like a game to me. It's not so much difficult to find the movies anymore (between 3 Walmarts, a Target, Borders, Best Buy, FYE, and Sears it's pretty hard not to find a title) but it's fun to guess and see if you can get the best price on a title.
Thats why I've basically worked my hunting down to Walmart, Target, Best Buy, then Borders. If I don't have every title I want by time I leave Borders then I start getting a little desperate and hit up FYE, Newbury Comics, etc and hope for the best.
Today it only took me 3 stops to find everything. Walmart had 4 new releases, Target had 4 new releases (2 overlaped with Walmart) and strangely enough Best Buy for once had EVERYTHING. A very successful day, after cancelling my trip to nycc, I had to have a little fun today looking for movies.

They tried to give me something free for buying Pirates of the Caribbean at Best Buy but to be honest that stuff generally goes into my garbage can the minute I get home. The only really cool things that are given out for free like you said never actually apply to high def which kinda sucks. I mean hell sometimes we're paying $10 more why the hell can't we get a free 25 cent toy with it. I wouldn't mind finding a coupon or 2 inside of my purchase either.
Standard DVD gets all of those awesome coupons too because their buyers didn't have the foresight to buy the movie in high def to begin with...how about giving us guys who actually went out and bought high def first a little incentive too.

pardon my ignorance, but can someone tell me what NCFOM is about? Spoiler free please. Is it better/worse/same as 3:10 to Yuma?
Better by a mile than Yuma. Basically it's a movie not for the faint of heart as it focuses on three characters who are entangled in this journey of cat n mouse over a case of stolen money from a gang exchange gone wrong. Since the primary focus is on Anton Chigur, the psychopath, the viewer can expect some gruesome killings from his perspective, although the scene with him and a gas station/convenience store clerk is absolutely brilliant for it's subtle text. It's essentially a study of good and evil...more so evil perhaps and its significance in the modern day with a sheriff who has many questions and getting so few answers.
The ending has been a hotly debated topic...one that you will simply "get it" or not...depending on your attention span during the film.
It rightly deserves its Oscar for best picture of 2007.

Went into Circuit City today to pick up Enchanted for my wife and son. I knew it was there yesterday and was hoping they'd still have it on the shelf today, because 1 of 2 things would've happened. Either they'd sell it to me early or refuse to sell it and as per their policy give me a $24 gift card.
So they had it and they refused to sell it. So I got a $24 gift card. That, coupled with the $10 off coupon for Enchanted, will make it free for me next week when it's released.

I agree 100%. There was absolutely no point to do that to the dog. You could have just as easily left her out of the movie entirely. Killing it off added nothing to the film. One could argue that it drove home the solidarity of his current situation, but then two other people show up killing that arguement. I hate it when writers/directors kill animals off for no other reason than a cheap attempt at elicitng an emotion becuase they aren't compentent enough to work towards a real one.

No, they're not supposed to sell it to you... if they do sell it to you, that's where the fines come in ($10,000 per title sold if caught)

Seems like I should be able to negoiate a better deal than a $24 gift card then.

Some stockperson made a mistake and put it on the shelf....this is the second time I've caught it at my Circuit City...when they tell you they can't sell it, I just calmly question why it's out. Both times now they've given me a $24 gift card "for my trouble."
Seeing as how any store credit is burning an insane hole in my pockets these days, I of course have already spent the gift card.
I went back to Circuit City and had them price match Best Buy's prices on a The Breakfast Club and Black Christmas, plus their 10% difference...and I got them both absolutely free. (I seriously think I already have almost every other movie on their shelf for both formats).
I planned to get Enchanted at Wal-Mart for $5 cheaper next week anyway. :D

I could not disagree more with you guys...
Of course it was TREMENDOUSLY emotional. That scene was one of the strongest things in the movie. They do it to complete his decension into pure isoloation and loneliness. That's what sparked his suicidal rage which led to the lady finding and driving him and the darkseekers finding and destroying his house. Plus, storyline-wise once he dies in the end, what were they supposed to do with his dog? Either way, I felt they HAD to do it.

I'm not saying the scene didn't have a strong purpose, I'm not saying the scene was poorly done, and I'm not saying it wasn't perfect to further the storyline.
All I'm saying is it disturbed me as a person and is just one of those scenes that kills a movie for me. Kinda like every scene in Hostel.

To some extent, yes. It's far from preachy about it but it's certainly hinted at that we're ****g the place up. That's with Sigourney Weaver's Discovery Channel narration. I've yet to hear David Attenborough's narration on the BBC version yet.

NCFOM coupon scanned no problem for me yesterday. I went to an apparent high risk store as all their high def movies were on lock down and they said they had to ring them up in the electronics dept. The funny thing is when I handed my coupon to the clerk, she said, "Man, everyone has these." I told her that the studio was emailing them around to people who regularly purchase high def movies in an attempt to draw more people to the Blu bandwagon, haha. She bought it. :)

Yeah, I don't mean I LOVED the scene for its eventual act but I guess it highlighted how talented Will is as an actor, that he can emotionally connect you to the animal in such a way.
As for the ending, I remember how in the trailer, he's literally face to face with the head mutant but that it was left out of the film...I'm guessing this is in the alternate ending?

Tremors is a flawless film. The story is original and entertaining. The actors make it all the more fun, especially Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward and Michael Gross. Tremors is the kind of movie that can't be placed in a certain genre. It's a little bit of everything; horror, comedy, action, adventure, etc. Don't miss this very good movie!
