Firefly is the TV series serenty was based off.
There are alot of people that loved Firefly but hated Serenity...
You don't have fireflys in NY? Weird....
Serenity was decent. I enjoyed it. Never saw the Firefly series though, but I would like to at some point. Loved Buffy and Angel.
American Gangster was OK. I was expecting something a lot more than what it was for all the hype it received. Just not as good as I expected.
Still haven't seen Zodiac, but I would like too.
Tremors is a funny movie. Not great, but entertaining.

Well, I would have been 5-6 then, so that explains why I didn't see it. Since I lived in a little podunk town growing up, I wouldn't have had the chance to see the 1992 release either. We either didn't have a theater at the time, or it was busy showing second rate movies.

Batman Begins Bluray slated for July 8th.:D
This makes me a happy man!
Warner Home Video will release Batman Begins on Blu-ray Disc July 8 (prebook June 3) in anticipation of the July 18 theatrical release of its sequel, The Dark Knight. The HD DVD version of the movie is one of the fading format’s top sellers.
Two Blu-ray editions are in the works: a single-disc version at $28.99, and as part of a limited-edition gift set at $49.99. The gift set also includes a Batman Begins motion art lenticular, exclusive photos, script pages, storyboards, five collectible Batman Begins postcards and $7.50 in movie cash toward a Dark Knight ticket. Both the standalone version and gift set Blu-ray releases include an exclusive comic book prologue to The Dark Knight.
Warner also will re-release Batman Begins on DVD, re-packaged as a $39.92 gift set that includes a 128MB Batman flash drive, the collectible postcards and movie cash. A Warner spokesperson said the DVD includes all the content from the 2005 two-disc special edition DVD set.
The critically acclaimed Batman Begins, directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale as Batman, grossed more than $205 million at the domestic box office and was overwhelmingly selected as the greatest superhero movie of all time in an AgentDVD.com poll, earning 40% of the votes.
Also due July 8 is the new direct-to-video animated anthology Batman: Gotham Knight, an anime-inspired film that chronicles Bruce Wayne’s journey to become Batman. Warner offers a single-disc DVD at $24.98, a two-DVD special edition at $29.98, and on Blu-ray Disc at $34.99. The movie also debuts day-and-date on pay-per-view, on-demand and for download.
i'll be grabbing the special edition

Xbox 360 with Blu Confirmed?
http://forums.highdefdigest.com/showthread.php?p=845829#post845829
Microsoft is planning a brand new Xbox that will include a Blu-ray drive. Confirming that Sony and Microsoft are in talks, a senior Sony President has claimed that the move will not hurt the Japanese consumer electronics company.
Sony has confirmed that they are in talks with Microsoft about offering a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360. Reported exclusively on SmartHouse 4 weeks ago it has also been revealed that the two competitors are discussing the possibility of a Blu-ray drive being built into the Xbox 360 console as opposed to a standalone model similar to the HD DVD model that Microsoft recently dumped.
Confirming our original story (See http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Gaming/Console/J7L7H2R4&n bsp;Chief Executive of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer has that the company will now support Blu-ray. "We've already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like, and I think the world moves on", said Ballmer at Microsoft's Mix08 internet conference. "Toshiba has moved on. We've moved on, and we'll support Blu-ray in ways that make sense", he said.

Update on the Schmartz IR adapter with on/off feature.
I got this a few weeks ago and set it up right away... I haven't had a whole lot of time to play around with it to much but it does work, but only partially. No problems setting it up to the 880... actually there wasn't any setup at all, it's already setup to work with the programming of your PS3. Just plug and play. Only problem is it will turn off with the remote but I can't get the on feature to work despite placing the sticky thing in multiple places. It's not that big of a deal though because I'll usually need to walk over to the PS3 to put a movie or game in anyway. Just glad I can finally use my Harmony to control all the equipment.
Okay, it's Friday, time to go shopping... I got a big list this week. :D

Anyone ever watch WEEDS? I might get that Blu-ray if the show is any good.
My love for Blu-ray actually made me hooked on this show. I was in Walmart one day with absolutely nothing to buy and Weeds ended up catching my eye. It did 2 things that I really liked. One it was cheap...two it started off with season 1. Something that alot of Blu-ray studios should look at, if I'm bored, money is burning a hole in my pocket, and I want to buy a TV show on DVD I'm not going to start with season 3-5 you idiots.
But anyways showtime has absolutely amazing television shows. Weeds is awesome and Californication is probably the 2nd best show on TV. It's definately a show that you can get hooked on and for only $15-$20 why not? And with season 3 recently announced for Blu-ray release you know that if you do fall in love with the show you know it will at least be supported for the future.

Sorry guys....last night was hectic.......ended up working late....then got home and my wife was in bed because she didn't feel well.....and our little 9 week old puppy turned into the devil himself.
So, in short, I did not have time to compile my "Friday Free For All Blu Ray Sale".
Instead...I will have to make it a "Sensational Saturday Sales Extravaganza"
:p
Well, at least if it's delayed to Sunday you can use the same alliteration. But you're in trouble if it gets pushed to Monday.

Primeval is one of the worst movies I own on Blu-ray and thats really saying something. The hell is the BDA doing?
Everyone has dropped HD DVD support but the numbers haven't improved at all recently - this is exactly what I was worried about, they are sitting on their hands thinking everyone will just adopt the format now.
what are they doing?
what they aren't doing is having to blow out their inventory of software at rock bottom prices

ehh, they (BDA) should be agressive right now - I haven't seen any new ads...... not one, maybe I've missed them but it being tax return season and all..... you'd think they would want to try and capitalize on that and get people to splurge with that extra wad of cash - especially since so many people were holding out to see who won the format war.
AG was #1 when it was a standard $29.99 - so the blowout rule doesn't apply there, same w/ Beowulf. BDA has gotten complacent - Everybody has dropped HD DVD support but Blu hasn't gained ANY ground in the numbers. Now sure, you can argue that $10 movies are making the difference - but only a few online retailers are offering that (granted Amazon is one of the biggest).
That being said, there is no reason Blu shouldn't be picking up ground - sure, HD DVD has had the better releases the past few weeks (prior to this week) but it's a dead format, it shouldn't have any title outselling blu. It better be at least 85/15 this week and if it's not.... that doesn't bode well for the long term future of blu imo.

I'm sorry I lost all interest in Batman after so many changes in the main character. Each movie got sillier and I was bored by the last one.

Blu isn't picking up ground because the number and quality of catalog releases are crap
it isn't about deep discounting the catalog out now that is going to impact adoption ....
it is the release of content people want to see
this is such a simple concept
the titles will come in time ... unfortunately it is taking so long
just as consumers may have been holding out/back so were studios with their content
why spend on advertising now when there is no killer application (software) to drive sales

Because people have that "extra" cash now from the tax returns and a lot of people were on the fence about it until one format won.
This is what I was worried about - Blu has gotten complacent, they need to push hard for widespread adoption.

You were seriously bored by Batman Begins?
Batman begins is theeeeee only batman movie you need to see. Bale is perfect, in both characters. While Keaton may have been a better Batman, he was no Bruce Wayne I.M.H.O. but Bale seems to pull off both of them. The darkness of the movie, the whole feel is just awesome. You have to get a copy of this and watch it.
Yes the last two of the original series were, well, laughable at best. I still love them. But this movie is the only one you should concern yourself with.

Ehh it's not like you'll take the disk out of your player and break it in half. I don't think you'll regret buying it.....but in comparison to the rest of the movies you got coming in your haul thats your one weak spot. The movie had me going well and good but the minute you turn an 80 year old 20 foot long croc into a stealthy, athletic hunter I'm kinda like "oh come on".
I mean I know it's a movie and you are supposed to leave your brain at the door....but my brain was yelling at me all the way from the door telling me how ridiculous it was. It's definately one of those movies that if you go into it with an open mind and with enough friends watching it with you, it can be so bad it's good. Because it will most definately deliver on the "so bad" part.

Content is king, your right - they could do an ad stating that all studios now support bluray, let the public know that all the movies will be coming to blu and hd dvd is dead..... you push for mass adoption so that people go out and buy players now while they have the "extra" money to do so.
You might not spend any money on catalog releases - but someone just buying into bluray would grab a few movies.

First one's the best because unlike the sequels, it didn't have a confusing story and didn't deal with so much pirate politics. And plus you can sleep through the first 2 hours of the first one and wake up for the last part.
But I do have to admit the final climatic battle was quite one helluva thrill ride. It was really quite exciting especially with the addition of Hans Zimmer's awesome score.
It is also a great looking Blu-Ray movie. :D

I see all of your points and I agree about the jobs, homes and gas prices - however, a good % of people take that tax return money and spend it on an impulse.
Maybe the BDA is waiting for best buy, etc. to phase out all the hd dvd stuff and then they are going to make a strong push, it's the only thing that would make sense to me at this point. I just really hope they don't continue to sit on their hands and just expect people to adopt the format.
Edit: Another thing that just hit me, maybe they are waiting to make a push until the tax bonuses come in later this year - forgot about that. Would be a good time to hit people with the 'impulse buy'.

Hey Guys,
I am planning on purchasing the new Sony STR-DG820 Receiver (7.1 Channel) next month. Can anyone recommend a good speaker set to hook up to this? I'm not an overly huge audiophile, but also don't want that HTIB crap. I will be running my 80GB PS3 through this for the main purpose of watching Blu Ray movies. I don' know that I really even care about True HD Lossless audio either. Should I even bother going with a 7.1 setup, or stick with 5.1 or 6.1? Go with 5.1. It's what I have. As Grif said, you can always upgrade with 2 more speakers later if you feel like you need to. Almost all movies are mixed at 5.1 anyways. Plus, 5.1 vs. 7.1 is a big debate in audiophile land. Many audiophiles I know refuse to move to 7.1. Their arguement is that they don't want more surround speakers than front speakers to risk drowning out important stuff.
Who knows.

Good advice, thanks guys. I was looking at the Klipsch Quintet III set, not too bad of price, seems to have good reviews, the only downfall being having to shell out more money for the sub that is not included. Gonna do some Polk research now.....

Sub and Center are the main speakers IMHO. I would get a good sub and Center then Fronts and Surrounds last.
I upgraded my center from a HTIB to a Polk center and its amazing the difference. Then replaced the Sub and its amazing what I was missing.

I'm sure questions like this have been asked, but I don't want to look at all of those pages. I'm going to be receiving an $1100 tax return, and I want to buy my first HDTV for my bedroom.
I currently have a 20" flat screen Toshiba that I bought in early 2002. I think that a 26" set would be a good size for the room. My sister and her fiancee just bought a 32" set and I think it might be too large for the room.
My main question is this. Is there a 26" set that does 1080p? I'd like to get the highest signal. If I can't, I'll probably hold off for the time being. I might consider a 32" set. Also, could someone explain to me what exactly contrast ratio is? I know higher is better, but what is acceptable for a set? Thank you for the help!

For TV size, multiply the screen WIDTH by 1.5. That's how far away you should be sitting. (So plan on a TV size accordingly)
You won't notice a difference betwen 720p and 1080p on a set smaller than 50".
Contrast ratio is irrelevant at this point. It's just marketing.

As was said, 1080p is completely unnecessary on a set smaller than 50"....and it's debatable as to larger than 50", as well.
They will try to sell you 1080p at every turn in the stores but don't buy into it. Contrast ratio also is mostly irrelevent.
What you want to do is go for brand. Pioneer, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony...possibly LG.
My other advice is if you're spending a decent amount of money on a TV, and odds are you're not going to do it again anytime soon....get a bigger size. I look at the widescreen 16:9 dimensions of TV's these days and anything smaller than 42" just seems like a waste.
With a 768p TV, you should be able to get a 40-42" TV well within your budget, even of a quality brand, and it'll shine.
Whenever I show off my Panasonic 50" plasma (which is 768p native), all I get are dropped jaws, and much of the time it's from people who own 1080p TV's that wonder why their sets don't look like mine.
I would seriously consider buying from a reputable, authorized dealer online if that sort of thing doesn't bother you. They're extremely professional, you save hundreds, the warranties are cheaper, it's just a better all-around shopping experience than going to Best Buy. I'd avoid Circuit City at all costs, their warranties are insanely expensive.

Amen brotha, mine is a 42" Panasonic plasma and I think my wife is jealous of my TV with the amount of attention it's getting.
Anyway, for the question... When I went to buy my TV Future Shop had a 42" 1080p and 720p TV right beside each other. The picture was EXACTLY the same. I bought the 1080p only because it was the same price as the 720p. The signal being fed was 1080i so that might have been a factor, I don't know. You'll never notice a difference in a smaller TV.
In conclusion, my plasma is getting all the love lately while my projector is sulking in the basement. ;)
Also, picked up Gone Baby Gone and We Own the Night... both blind buys.

Contrast ratio is important. You want a TV with a better contrast ratio. This defines how well it handles light and dark scenes. Granted, most of the manufactuers they recommended offer TVs with good contrast ratios.

If you're looking to buy a new HDTV, don't place much merit on the contrast ratio published by the manufacturer; it is pretty much meaningless for real-world (a little bit of light in the room) viewing. Plus, I've never seen a review of a calibrated display meet or exceed the manufacturer published contrast ratios.
http://www.carltonbale.com/2007/01/the-truth-about-inflated-hdtv-contrast-ratios/
Ultimately, contrast ratio has become little more than marketing-speak, and the numbers are now largely meaningless. Things have gotten out of control to the point where various vendors have claimed 1,000,000:1 contrast ratios. It's getting to the point where escalating contrast ratios are now an industry joke, though not a very funny one.
http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/29651
...and so on and so on.
Plus, a movie theater has a contrast ratio of 500:1. As long as you're higher than that, you're ok. (Hint: The TV you will buy will be higher than that.)

Just found this link. It's great! It's called "The Contrast Ratio Game."
Presence of light: To better understand the impact of the presence of light in a room on the contrast ratio performance of an imaging device, it is sufficient to realize that with the light emitted by just one candle in a room - that's just one LUX - there would not be any difference between a 500:1 and a 5000 or even a 10,000:1 contrast ratio!
Increase the level of light in the room to just 30 LUX - that's equivalent to a dimly lit room - and contrast ratio figures above 50:1 would turn out to be simply academic even in the case of video projectors with relatively high brightness rating (2000/2500 Lumens and above).
It is therefore clear that unless you watch your moves in a completely darkened environment, it would be useless to stress too much and pay more for a device with a higher contrast ratio!

It's not really a bad movie, but it does fail to live up to the hype. The creatures are really lame since it's all CG and they look just as convincing as those damn Gungans from SW Episode 1. My thanks to everyone for the advice. I'm going to stick with buying a 26" set, as it's going in a bedroom. When I buy my own place, I will look into something larger for a main room. I'm leaning towards a Samsung set that I've linked to below. It's on sale for $649.99 and has a nice amount of connections. I'd have a Nintendo Wii hooked up via component cables and I'd have the two free HDMI hookups for another system or Blu-Ray player in the future. Any opinions on this set? Sony has a Bravia in a 26" model, as does Toshiba with a Regaza.

School for Scoundrels is for me...possibly the worst movie I've ever rented. I've seen a few stinkers in the theater I've walked out of, but this one was atrocious. It says something that of all the movie buying I've been doing, and with HD DVDs reaching this $9 price point, I've still left this one alone.

You can get many different opinions, but those are all good sets. I might lean toward Samsung over the other two just because it might be the most value for the money. But everyone's eyes are room setups are different. The smartest thing to do is find these TVs in a B&M store just so you can comparison shop and see the units for yourself. Then go back to Amazon and order when you know which one you want.
You might also want to try Vanns.com or other fully authorized dealers online.
Sometimes they're cheaper than even Amazon and they are more specialized customer service.

Oh no you didn't edit my work!
If you want to know the optimum distance, measure your TV horizontally (not diagonally) to get the actual screen width. Take that number and multiply by 1.54. That will give you the ideal amount of inches from the TV.

I doubt there is a single movie on XBox Live that is either 1080i or 1080p. I would bet they are all 720p and then your XBox will upconvert them to 1080i or p depending on what kind of connection you use for video output.

First, thanks to oaktown for selling me this. :)
I have to say I really enjoyed this movie. Granted, I'm a sucker for these end of the world type films. The PQ was amazing and the sound equally good in DTS 5.1
This is definately more of a "thinking" scifi than an "action" scifi, so if you're not into movies like Children of Men or Blade Runner, this might be a pass for you.
Personally, I think it's the best new release I've watched at home in 2008. :)
All right....someone who I can agree with on a movie! :)

Just ordered IAL from that Amazon deal. Looks to be the best price this week. Pretty excited by it. Got a Red Peters CD for my Dad to get over the $25 free shipping barrier.

Anyone updated the firmware on the AD-30??? I don't want to run into problems. But I have a disc that says system error occurred, and Toshiba told me i needed the update.

lol... no sir :)
To put it mildly, Sunshine isn't a popcorn flick (and I LOVE popcorn flicks).
I do think it takes a particular mindset to enjoy a movie like Sunshine. And if you don't have it that's definately not a bad thing.
The same goes for films like the Royal Tanembaums... for all the rave reviews it got, I thought the films sucked ass and didn't have a single funny moment in it.

Heheheh...decided to pass on Barry Manilow eh? Actually Red Peters is a winner in my book. That guy has some of the funniest songs that I've heard in a loooong time. Listen to him quite a bit on Howard 101 via satellite.

Onkyo 606 coming soon :)
http://avbuzz.com/bbs/av/av-uploads/2008/03/12/1205322185.JPG
The Progression of Affordable High-Def Home Theater Continues
with Full HD Integration and Video Upscaling
As part of the second generation of Onkyo high-definition-capable receivers, the TX-SR606 is at the forefront of affordable home
theater. The key is to have the most capable version of HDMI.The TX-SR606 provides high-definition video and audio processing for
four source components—another first for Onkyo at this level. From Blu-ray Disc players to gaming consoles and cable/satellite boxes,
you have everything in the digital realm covered.Apart from 1080p video, the TX-SR606 can upscale all video signals to 1080i,
regardless of the connection, for output via HDMI. Onkyo’s own RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) also gives you inter-operability
with the displays and playback components from other leading brands. And with an expanded version of Audyssey’s room correction
technology, the TX-SR606 maintains the fullness of surround sound audio quality at low volume levels. The TX-SR606 offers all-round
excellence rarely seen at this level.
Processing 1080p Video and High-Def Surround Sound
via HDMI 1.3a
With the latest HDMI version and advanced A/V processing
capabilities, the TX-SR606 is a powerful control center for all highdefinition
media, including Blu-ray Disc and HD broadcasts. You can
connect up to four components via HDMI to receive and switch
compatible sources for a pure digital connection to an HDTV.Also, all
multichannel audio—from bit-for-bit streams to standard Dolby
Digital—can be digitally transported via HDMI for processing by the
TX-SR606.This version of HDMI enables CEC (Consumer Electronics
Control), greater bandwidth to deal with higher resolutions, 36-bit
Deep Color™, and high frame rates.
The Full Range of Next-Generation, High-Definition
Surround-Sound Codecs
The TX-SR606 has the decoding technologies—Dolby TrueHD® and
DTS-HD® Master Audio—to enable a lossless, bit-for-bit soundtrack
that is identical to that of the studio master. Both codecs are designed
for the Blu-ray Disc format. The receiver also handles two “lossy”
technologies: Dolby® Digital Plus and DTS-HD® High Resolution Audio.
Dolby Digital Plus has been designed for high-definition video delivered
via disc media, broadcasts and online content. DTS-HD High
Resolution Audio, meanwhile, offers a greater bit rate, a higher sampling
rate, and more channels than the core DTS technology.
HDMI Video Upscaling (to 1080i) and Faroudja DCDi
Edge™ (Directional Correlational Deinterlacing)
Technology
The TX-SR606’s HDMI inputs can receive pristine digital video from
HDMI-enabled components for a single-cable output to a display
device with an HDMI or DVI connection. 1080p video is processed as
it is, but all other signals can be upscaled to 1080i via HDMI. Upscaling
takes the video resolution to pure HD quality, and it better matches
the native resolution of today’s high-definition displays. To further
improve performance on high-definition displays, the TX-SR606 features
a deinterlacing chip with Faroudja DCDi Edge technology, which
effectively eliminates video artifacts.
RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) for System
Control
Courtesy of HDMI 1.3a, the TX-SR606 offers integrated system control
with selected HDMI-compatible high-definition displays, DVD and harddisk
recorders, and Blu-ray Disc players. With one remote control, you
can control several functions, including Standby,Volume Command and
Direct Change. RIHD lets you seamlessly integrate the TX-SR606 with
other leading brand-name devices, including those in the Panasonic
VIERA Link™,Toshiba CE-Link™, Sharp AQUOS Link, and Samsung
Anynet+ ranges.

Just thought I'd give you guys a heads up....At work tonight (Best Buy) I saw a note on our company message board/announcement board that at the end of March there will be a huge HD DVD sendback so we need to keep all our totes ready for it. It didn't say if ALL HD DVD's would be sent back but it sounds like it will be significant. This wasn't just for my location, it's company wide. I'll try and get a screenshot of it and post it ASAP.

Can't say I'm surprised... stores can only discount so much before the better option is to ship them back for credit.
Hopefully everything sent back is sold off to a Liquidation website or store rather than the studios destroying them.

Seen something that I have NEVER seen on SD DVD. I have watched this movie many many many times.
There is one scene where it shows a HUGE BOOGER in Sean Connery's nose. It was so gross. I went back to the SD version and it doesnt show up. My GF seen it at the same time I did. She just laughed.
I love HD and all but DAM I wasnt ready for that part.

Has anyone ordered a television through Amazon.com? I've picked out the set I want after comparing in-store today and Amazon has it on sale for a much better price. I guess I'm just worried about dead pixels or damage in shipping. Also, is the 2 year extended warranty worth the additional $59.99? People revieiwng the company weren't very kind to it.
One final question (I know, I'm sorry). Is there any difference at all between HDMI cables? I don't buy into any of the Monster Cable nonsense, but am I good with a $15 cable?

I ordered my tv through Amazon with no problems.
When they come to deliver the tv, you have to sign for it, so you can open it up and check everything out before you let the guy go. Just have it set up so it'll be fast :) There's a G checker on the sides of the tvs. It tells you if the box was dropped or anything. Mine was tripped so I plugged in and hooked up xbox and everything before the guy left.
As far as the warranty, that one on amazon is crap from what I've read.
Go to Monoprice.com for your cable needs. I got 3 hdmi cables for like 9 bucks a piece.

I've not bought a TV off Amazon, but I looked at doing so before. Instead I found a local place that would match an online price, and then had Best Buy match that one. That way I got reward points.
You will be just fine with a $15 HDMI cable. Mine was $6 and works great.
