The last Universal HD DVD release....but sad nonetheless. :(

Indeed :(

Indeed :(

Actually, for me, for all intents and purposes it's the last HD DVD...since I'm format neutral. There's no sense in getting the HD DVD version of any upcoming Warner titles I'm interested in...unless they start going for $14.99 on release week, which I can't see happening.

So I picked up No Country For Old Men yesterday. Watched it today.

Not impressed. It was ok, but it died out at the end and just wasn't my type of movie.

Throwin it up for trade :)

Have:
Across the Universe
No Country for Old Men *TRADED*

Wants (preference order)

Man On Fire
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
The Gameplan
Saw IV
Con Air *Done*
The Rock *Done*

I might take something else :) Just pm me an offer. ATM I'd rather trade. 1 for 1 is cool with me.

Got rid of NCFOM, so just have Across the Universe :)

Got Enchanted for $14.96 today. Although I almost had to fight all of Walmart to make it happen. It's amazing how they treat good customers like crap but the lowest of all the customers who throw grow up temper tantrums in customer service are treated like gods. The worst part was, was they refused to scan the coupon. I was like "ok how about this, if the coupon scans and is in your system then the deal is ok, but if the coupon for any reason doesn't scan then I'll walk away no big deal". They WOULD NOT scan the damn coupon...finally after I broke their will they scanned the coupon and what do you know an immediate $10 off. I basically had to double dog dare them to freakin scan a coupon.

It is in their policy to accept online coupons, so if they give you crap about it just tell them you will be contacting corprate

Did you print it out full size (ie full sheet of paper) or did you shrink it down?

And did you print in color or b&w?

Black & White not full size....the high res is so freakin big it takes up like 2-3 pages. I shrinked it down to take up basically 1 full sheet of paper with space on the right side.

Good luck...best advice I can give you is even if it doesn't work just be persistant. I backed down on the Gameplan, I backed down on No Country for Old Men and this time I just wasn't having it after hearing success story after success story after success story on hdd. You don't have to get loud, you don't have to be a jackass to the employees just take a hard stand and know your story. My story was that I get weekly newsletters in my email giving me deals on blu-rays and this was this weeks deal.

You were probably shopping at a "high risk" Walmart. Usually the closer you get to a big city the more locks you find inside your Walmart. Out here in the burbs instead of having locks they just give you the eagle eye anytime your around anything expensive.

The Wal Mart closest to a good friend of mine is TOO lock and key with theirs.

They put those "spider locks" (ya know, the big round electronic tracker with the wires wrapped around the case) on every individual movie....and they crank um down so tight that the DVD (or BR or HD) cases get dented and bent from the cables.

Needless to say, my friend avoids buying any movies at that particular walmart.

We only have those spider locks on Prison Break and the Oceans Boxed Set. And unfortunately those locks are the exact reason I got neither of those movies at Walmart. They kill the boxes/cases.

Technically it's not an online coupon though. What people are using is a scan of the coupon that comes with the dvd version. It's their way of trying to get you to buy both versions :)

Technically printing out the scanned coupon and using that is a scam, and Wal*mart/whoever won't get their money back for it.

I printed it out too. But it's technically wrong :)

As for the ;)... LOL I think I have an illness. She knows the rules. No talking, cell phones, moving around, or touching during a movie. ESPECIALLY during a first viewing. Dude... I've gotten grumpy with her if she crunches too loud!! (movie reactions are ok: ie laughing, gasping, etc.)

Casual TV watching / movie we catch on TV is different.

But for a sitdown movie or one of my hardcore tv shows (lost, 24, etc.). There are rules that must be obeyed!!

Grabbed NCFOM and Enchanted at Wal-Mart using the $10 off coupons. I just went to the cashier who looked like she really could give a rat's azz whether I used an invalid coupon or not :D

Just walked up and said...the scans are pretty crappy...but I think if you just input that little code right there (and pointed to the 6 digit code on the upper left) it should work. She punched them in...then slipped the coupons into her register. And I printed out the worst looking copies possible. Seriously...they looked like 10 year old newspapers...could barely read the print.

Also....my BOGO portion of movies from Columbia House arrived....30 days of night, Michael Clayton, Asassination of Jesse James. The other three are preorders and will show upon release, I am Legend, Golden Compass, Dewey Cox.

Got a ton of movie watching to do. I think I'm all set on Blu Rays until Predator comes out.

I personally think you're wasting money on 1080p on a 47" set. Even at that size, you will not notice a difference. You'd be completely buying into the sales trap.

I agree with that too, I know I'd stay away from Phillips. Plenty of Samsung, Sony and Toshiba models in that price range if you look around, much better quality sets that will most likely outperform and outlast this Phillips you're looking at.

Best Buy Stands Behind Customers By Awarding More Than $10 Million in Gift Cards to HD-DVD Purchasers

Leading Consumer Electronics Retailer will Send $50 Gift Cards to Customers Who Purchased an HD-DVD Player from Best Buy in the U.S.

MINNEAPOLIS --(Business Wire)-- Mar. 19, 2008 With Blu-ray declaring victory over HD-DVD in the high definition movie format war, Best Buy, the nation's largest consumer electronics retailer, is giving $50 gift cards to customers who purchased an HD-DVD player or HD-DVD attachment from its U.S. stores before February 23, 2008. Customers will get a gift card for each player or HD-DVD attachment that they purchased. Through this program, Best Buy will distribute more than $10 million in gift cards to customers across the country.

"The DVD format war has divided our customers in a way we haven't seen since Betamax took on VHS more than 20 years ago," said Brian J. Dunn, president and chief operating officer for Best Buy. "At Best Buy, we understood and shared our customers' frustrations as they were being asked to choose one format or the other. Now that the format war is over, we hope these gift cards will reassure our customers that we will help them make a smooth transition into the right technology for their needs."

Most Best Buy customers won't have to do anything to receive their gift card. As a demonstration of its commitment to its customers, Best Buy will proactively mail cards to all customers that the company can identify as having purchased an HD-DVD player. Members of the Best Buy Reward Zone program, customers who purchased Performance Service Plans (PSPs) or who made their purchase on BestBuy.com should look for their gift cards in the mail by May 1. Other customers who may not be easily identified can call (888) BEST BUY to receive their gift cards with proof of purchase through a credit card or their Best Buy receipt.

"The beauty of this offer is that it doesn't require our customers to give up their HD-DVD player," said Barry Judge, chief marketing officer for Best Buy. "We know that many people who purchased these players have HD-DVD movies that they would like to continue to watch. We're telling our customers they can keep their players to play these movies as well as their older DVDs and use the $50 to treat themselves to anything else in our stores."

HD-DVD players can actually deliver greatly enhanced video performance with standard DVDs by upconverting the video resolution.

Beginning on March 21, customers who do want to get rid of their HD-DVD players can visit Best Buy's Online Trade-In Center at http://www.bestbuytradein.com. Visitors to the site will receive instant estimates of the value of their HD-DVD players and movies. Those who agree with the estimates can then ship their goods to the Trade-In Center free of charge by downloading a prepaid shipping label and will receive an additional gift card as payment for their trade-in. This service is open to HD-DVD owners regardless of where they bought their player.

I have to say I'm totally stunned by this whole idea of trading in HD-DVD players for credit towards Blu-ray players. Really it is just something that has never happened in the electronics industry before. I'm just amazed.

I also realize I could have basically bought a 360 add-on for free based on this....

Another in agreement. You should be able to find a TV at Sams Club that is made by one of the above companies and get a much better TV.

I beleive Phillips is a division of RCA and based on a warrenty issue I had with them, I would never buy another one of their products again.

I don't understand why BB would do this at all...it's way too generous. A $50 gift card and they get to keep their HD-DVD player. They don't even have to use this Gift Card on Blu-Ray movies/hardware? Seems almost foolish to me, businesswise. Many of these customers are still satisfied and happy with their HD-DVD players that they purchased at BB, I'm sure, and will continue to use them for years to come.
That BB trade-in site sucks though, their values are extremely low - that won't even be worth looking at as an option if you want to "upgrade" to Blu.

I will be sitting bout 10 ft away from it so I thought I'd want to go with the 1080p. I'm just looking for a sweet looking tv that will make my High Def stuff look awesome. I want a 47". The farther away you sit means the more you DON'T want 1080p. You'd never see the benefit it at that distance for that size TV.

what about panasonic? i have my eyes on a 42inch plasma...

I honestly don't know. I only know LCD's because I was just shopping for a 47" LCD myself a couple months ago. I did a ton of research and actually decided against purchasing one at all because all of the sets in my price range (under $1500) had too many problems. From what I've read briefly Panasonic makes the best plasma sets out there.
If I'm looking for something like this I like to just go over to avsforum and read the owner's thread for that particular model. They have so many well-educated board members that really know what they're talking about for the most part. And of course, while researching a particular set that you're interested in, you're bound to come across features and specs of similar models and what makes them better/worse.

And next time an unproven tech comes along are you going to buy it at Best Buy or Circuit City? ;)

Also, you're discounting the extent to which getting people in the store. that's a massive boon to Best Buy. A $5 gift certificate? You and I would use... But most people would ignore till they expired. $50? Most people will go in. Will they just grab 4 free cds? or will they use it to go on a spree for $500+.

Obviously if someone buys a videogame, BB loses lots. But if someone buy an HDMI cable? CHA-CHING.

Also, this is SUCH the PERFECT time to do this with tax rebates coming out in May.

I figure 50% of these gift cards will go unused. You have to have purchased an extended warranty to used your reward zone card to get these gift cards automatically mailed to you. How many people said "F U" when the cashier asked about that stuff. If you didn't do that, you have to find your receipt and call Best Buy. If you don't care enough to have a reward zone card, you're never going to find this press release.

Similar to you taking a girl out to dinner. You pay for everything...head back to her place for a nightcap and find out that she's a he. It was all false advertising and you want him to pay every cent back. ;)

The TV size isn't a problem....you just won't need to waste hundreds on 1080p. 768p (720p) is all you need.

The brand makes more of a difference....you'd be better off spending the money on Panasonic, Sony or Samsung.

More Onkyo receivers.

http://www.avguide.com/news/2008/03/17/onkyo-unveils-two-new-av-receivers-with-music-optimizer/

March 17 - Onkyo has decided to unveil two brand new A/V receivers today that will have a significant appeal to home theater buffs on a budget.

The new units, the TX-SR506 and the TX-SR576, look to be very capable and are priced at only $379 and $479 respectively.

The TX-SR506 will include a wide range of features, including Audyssey’s 2EQ room correction system and Audyssey’s Dynamic EQ loudness control. Audyssey’s room correction software is basically second-to-none at the moment, so this is a definite perk at these prices.

These units will also feature Onkyo’s Powered Zone 2 technol0gy, which allows the user to power stereo speakers in a second zone from the unit’s surround amplifier channels while still listening to 5.1 channel surround sound in the first zone.

Onkyo is also debuting a new technology in these receivers, the Onkyo Music Optimizer.

This technology will enhance the sound of digital music that has been compressed in the AAC and MP3 formats.

The TX-SR506 is capable of 75 watts of output over 7 channels, with the slightly upgraded TX-SR576 capable of 80 watts per channel.

Both units support a wide array of audio formats as well, catering to the voracious needs of home theater enthusiasts across the globe.

For the very reasonable $379 and $479 price points on these units, they look absolutely amazing relative to similarly priced receivers.

Furthermore, it is good to see more companies recognizing the poor quality of digital music, while acknowledging its prevelance in today’s music scene, and trying to do something about the quality problem.

Hopefully features like Onkyo’s Music Optimizer coupled with Audyssey’s 2EQ room correction technology will begin to gain more traction in the market, allowing for much more pure reproduction in the new digital age of music.

The Audyssey stuff is nice but most won't use it. I prefer my own settings over what it came up with for me in my environment anyways.
The Music Optimizer sounds nice on paper but there is no mention of iPod integration built-in to these receivers and Onkyo's iPod "dock" is about $90.

They are already using PlayTV in Europe. Turns the PS3 into a DVR. Haven't gotten the deals done on this side of the pond yet. Big cable is holding things up.

PlayTV's interface is really cool. I hope it comes here soon!! :D

UK, February 26, 2008 - It's probably fair to assume that when you honked down cash and invested in the promised potential of Sony's PlayStation 3, the last thing you thought you'd be doing was watching television on it. Still, that hasn't discouraged SCEE from beavering away on its forthcoming PlayTV DVR peripheral, set for release in the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain. So, goggle-eyes at the ready, we thought we'd pop on over to Sony and find out if we should even pretend to be excited about the whole thing.

PlayTV consists of one part digital TV tuner, one part PS3 software. One end of the fairly unassuming external tuner plugs into your TV aerial, with the box connecting to your PS3 by way of USB - which, incidentally, supplies power to the device. From here, it's simply a case of tucking the thing down the back of the telly or draping a doilly over it – you need never know it's there again.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/854/854941/playtv-preview-20080226073525899-000.jpgPlayTV's main interface: where all your telly-related dreams come true.

On the software side, PlayTV adds a brand new 'TV' icon to the standard PS3 XMB, the relevant PlayTV software residing merrily as a sub-menu item. Unsurprisingly, once booted up, the package sports a clean, accessible interface - perfect for the technologically incapable. Not entirely dissimilar to Front Row on a Mac, PlayTV's rotating icon carousel interface is split into seven different categories: LiveTV, Schedule, Find and Record, Search, Guide, Library and Manual.

Starting with the least exciting option, Manual provides convenient pictorial instructions for using the PS3 controller to navigate and operate PlayTV. That's probably just as well given the slightly bewildering array of options and sub-menus on offer. Without actually going hands-on with the thing, it's hard to gauge how intuitive pad control is but we suspect you might want to pick up a Blu-ray remote at some point if you want to avoid finger cramp.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/854/854941/playtv-preview-20080226073514337-000.jpgOn-screen programme information looking very much like you'd expect.

PlayTV has been developed in conjunction with Sony's Bravia team and the result is a TV tuner that does pretty much everything you'd expect of your modern day television/DVR hybrid – offering full access to digital Freeview channels and supporting subtitles, audio descriptions and the like. It's also a speedy little beast and happily whips between channels and interactive TV with ease, unlike some of your low-budget high street tuners.

It's tough to describe PlayTV's full feature list without boring everyone to tears but, suffice to say, if you've ever used digital TV, you'll know pretty much exactly what to expect, PlayTV sporting your usual on-screen Electronic Programme Guide in a fairly standard way. It's nicely designed though and even features a rather nifty effect which gently blurs the TV image behind any interface elements. Classy, Sony.

From within LiveTV, you're free to start recording at any time and a slowly lengthening bar on the upper portion of the EPG indicates where in the programme you began recording and for how long. As with other DVRs, you're free to pause, rewind and generally fanny about with the programme you're watching (at which point, the software switches to 'ReplayTV' mode). PlayTV can buffer up to 2GB of information as you watch – the exact length varies depending on a particular channel's broadcast bit-rate. For instance, 2GB will probably be sufficient for an hour and a half of BBC One, while you can probably cram a lot more Dave in, should you so desire. Of course, the buffering period will shrink significantly when HD digital TV is introduced but its good to see that PlayTV should at least support the standard.

Interestingly, it's possible to disable automatic buffering, largely as a precautionary measure. Sony claims its research into other DVR boxes revealed that the biggest cause of hardware failure tends to revolve around hard-drive components and, although keen to stress it's yet to see any such issues with the PS3's robust drives, Sony has included the feature as a workload-easing measure.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/854/854941/playtv-preview-20080226073512790-000.jpgYou can peruse channels in the Guide, or schedule recordings (in red).

Of course, PlayTV also lets you schedule future recordings (either as a one off or regular daily or weekly occurrence - proper 'series link' recording may be implemented later) via the Guide screen. In a nice touch, you can use the Search option to scan the EPG for keywords too so, if you're a ferret fanatic, say, you'll never miss a rodent-based programme again. Once you've located the programme you want, upcoming recordings are indicated in red (as opposed to the EPG's normal blue) and PlayTV conveniently informs you when a recording conflict occurs, asking what you'd like to do in those circumstances. At the moment, PlayTV features one dedicated playback tuner and one recording tuner, which means you can watch one programme and record another, but you can't record two things at once.

Neatly though, once a recording begins (waking the console up from stand-by mode if necessary), a standard system message in the top right corner of the screen appears, so you'll know what's going on, whatever you might be doing with your PS3 at the time. Which brings us nicely onto that burning question – will you be able to play games on your PS3 and record a TV programme simultaneously? Currently, Sony hopes so but is putting its console through its paces to ensure the feature won't affect a player's gaming experience. The company's priority is to ensure that nothing detracts from gameplay sessions and it's literally checking compatability with every PS3 game on the market before it's prepared to confirm the feature's inclusion in retail iterations of PlayTV. Encouragingly though, it seems Sony's yet to run into a problem with titles tested.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/854/854941/playtv-preview-20080226073518602-000.jpgStored programmes in the Library can be assigned a thumbnail for easy reference.

Once a recording has completed, you'll find it within PlayTV's Library menu, sorted by date, channel or even programme if you so choose. It's even possible to assign a thumbnail from the recording to your stored shows for ease of reference. Perhaps most interesting though, it's possible to transfer your recordings to the PS3's XMB 'Movies' folder via the 'Move to Home' option. Programmes are stored in MPEG 2 video and Sony won't be implementing restrictions on what you can do with your files. In other words, if you want to bung it on a memory stick or convert it for playback on your iPod, go for it.

Speaking of TV on the move, one of Sony's bigger PlayTV features is the ability to watch television on your PSP via Remote Play and, while it was referenced in our demo, we've yet to see it in action. We're certainly intrigued though and hope to check out what could be a must-have feature soon. Also mentioned, but infinitely less substantial, is the ability to scan through recordings at variable speeds using the PS3's analogue shoulder buttons. It's still in the works but we thought we'd mention it anyway, mainly because it sounded cool.

Of course, absolutely key to the success of PlayTV will be its price point, with a whole heap of cheap DVRs already on the market. Admittedly, Remote Play and the ability to record television while you're gaming might be enough to persuade power-users to part with their cash but perhaps doesn't quite equate to 'value' for everyone else. With Sony still keeping quiet on price and a release date though, we'll reserve judgement on the company's nifty - but perhaps non-essential - peripheral till later.

Cool, I'll have to put it back in my Netflix queue. For some reason, they sent me the regular DVD version, I guess the Blu version was gone and it defaulted to standard DVD then. They've never done that before, obviously I would prefer if they don't have a title on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray that they just skip to the next title in my queue. What the hell am I going to do with a standard DVD...bleccch :D - you guessed it - I opened it to check if it really was just the SD DVD then put it right back in the envelope to go back.

Sweeney Todd was pulled by Paramount for HD DVD.

I guarantee it will show up on DVD... Blu-ray is a longshot at this point, but I wouldn't rule it out just yet. I believe the BD version is up for presell in Europe so anything is possible.

WEINSTEIN!!!

Genius to Go Blu in Late 2008; Weinstein to Follow?
Thu Mar 20, 2008 at 01:00 PM ET

After sitting out the format war for nearly a year, the CEO of Genius Products says the company is preparing to release its first Blu-ray titles beginning in the second half of 2008.

In a recent conference call with investors, Genius CEO Trevor Drinkwater stopped short of issuing any specific titles or release dates, but confirmed that the company will begin supporting the Blu-ray format by the end of the year.

As the home video distributor for the Weinstein Company, Genius had been among the HD DVD camp's most high-profile initial partners. The company released nearly a dozen titles over the first six months of 2006 (including 'Clerks II,' 'Black Christmas' and 'Scary Movie 4'), before abruptly ending their support without any further explanation.

In light of Drinkwater's statements, could Genius/Weinstein finally be ready to release such highly-anticipated hits as '1408,' 'Grindhouse' and the 'Scary Movie' franchise to Blu-ray? High-Def Digest contacted both companies for comment, but representatives from both companies were unprepared to offer comments on their future high-def plans.

Nevertheless, Genius' plans for a late-2008 Blu-ray launch certainly remain a positive omen for Blu-ray fans. In addition to the Weinstein Co., Genius currently distributes titles on home video for such other prominent indie labels as Tartan Films, ESPN, Sesame Workshop, Here!, World Wrestling Federation, and IFC Films.

As always, we'll keep you posted on all future developments in the Genius/Weinstein Co. story as they come to us.

Any of you guys have the Harmony One remote? The one with the touch screen? I have a friend who bought one for his first Harmony remote and is having issues with it. When he switches between activities, like Watch DVD to Watch TV, it turns off the TV or the DVR if it was on previously.

Basically it isn't picking up that the TV is already on. Anyone ever have the same issue?

I don't have the One, but if it's like other harmony remotes there should be a help feature where the remote learns. Have him try that... it should ask him if a particular device is on or off.

MSRP, no way in hell.

But if you shop around I wouldn't be surprised to see an online sale or Black Friday sale for a $199 player.

I think the number they want to hit for Christmas 2008 is $299.

Really?? The Help button on my 550 just seems to ask me what the deal is (Is the TV On?) and let's me choose Yes or No. Depending on what I choose, it turns the TV on, or goes onto the next help topic. I didn't think it learned anything.

Maybe I didn't explain myself right?

He wants to watch a DVD. He touches (fancy remote) Watch DVD. Everything turns on and all is great and wonderful. His movie sucks, so he would rather watch the NCAA tourney. He touches Watch TV. DVD turns off, TV turns off, Cable box turns on. Now he is sad and has to turn on his TV again.

There's an option whether you want to turn off devices if you want to watch a different activity. I turned my "off" option to no. So when I watch my HD DVD's and I change my mind and want to watch satellite. TV changes to the right output for satellite, receiver changes output as well, HD DVD player just stops. I manually have to turn off the HD DVD player but better than turning on the TV again.

TheRedOx
03-20-2008, 02:47 PM
Just go back and review the activity settings on the Harmony remote software. There's a setting somewhere that must have gotten screwed up where it specifically asks you which devices should be on for which activity. Ex. - If I wanted to have my ceiling fan come on only when I played XBox I could set it up that way by making that device part of the activity. It sounds like he has the television on there twice as two separate devices or something. The software asked me straight-away if I wanted to leave my DirecTV DVR on all of the time instead of turning it off as well so I'm sure there's a setting for that too.

I would assume that if it actually still does get released, which it seems that it will, that it won't really be that hard to find. I mean, it will likely be on Amazon, so that makes it easy to find right away. Probably BB and CC will still carry it.

It isn't like it is going to be a limited edition or anything, and they probably already pressed all the copies before Toshiba decided to kill off HD-DVD, so there will be tons floating around.

On the plus side, it will probably be cheaper than the Blu-ray version.

I've wanted to for awhile..I've had a personal boycott of the NHL since '06, I don't watch hockey anymore at all and Tuomo Ruutu getting traded recently from the Hawks to the Canes was the last straw for me. Like others stated he has a button clicked to off instead of ON.

You can choose to leave other Electronics ON while switching Activites if needs be.

Just sounds like when he switches certain activies he clicked "OFF" instead of ON>

Simple fix.

Clicking the HELP button wont help. Its a setting that needs to be changed.

I currently connect my PS3 to my Yamaha RX-V520 receiver for sound via optical cable. However, then the harmony turns everything on, it sets the input mode to DTS. I need to set it to auto so it will recognize everything, not just DTS. I have had ZERO luck trying to find any such setting...

The first screen that pops up is to choose which version of the movie you want to see. Alternate or Theatrical version.

I'm surprised you thought that the AQ wasn't great. I Am Legend and 300 are probably the 2 best sounding Blu-Rays out there. You just have to set it to Dolby TrueHD. And unlike other Dolby TrueHD tracks, you don't really have to turn up your volume that loud to really hear it because the sound is dynamic quite 3 Dimensional sounding.

Paramount needs to bring this to the US NOW!

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/images/post/5/5445/original.pjpeg

The Audio: Rating the Sound

Unbelievable. I was already struck with awe by the amazing Dolby Digital Plus track Paramount included on the domestic HD DVD release of 'Beowulf,' but Warner Brothers stops the show with a lossless Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround mix that's, quite frankly, a sonic revelation. Boasting improved fidelity, subtly increased stability, and more nuanced bass, the TrueHD track featured on this import makes me wish I could bump my score higher than a five.

Everything else is just as impressive as it was on the domestic HD DVD. Dynamics literally shake the room with powerful LFE support, booming low-end thooms, and crystal clear treble tones. From the opening credits, the '300'-esque soundtrack hit me square in the chest and refused to relent -- by the time Beowulf found himself fighting sea monsters in the midst of a storm, I was convinced this mix could do no wrong. Rear support was shockingly aggressive and provided some of the most involving immersive qualities I've encountered in a soundfield. Listen to Grendel's initial attack -- soldiers are flung across the room, chairs shatter and skitter across the floor, and the creature's screams echo around the hall perfectly. Better still, head for the scene in which the fire dragon attacks and pay attention to his thunderous wings, the roar of his flames, and the cries of his victims.

To top it all off, dialogue was crystal clear and nicely prioritized within the chaos. I didn't have problems deciphering lines or instinctually understanding the placement of every object and character in the soundfield. This is a reference quality track through and through, and easily bests the majority of audio mixes on the high-def market.

Well I got TrueHD finally and the sound is still not all that great.

I guess I was expecting more. Alot of reviews gave the audio like an 8.5. It was ok but not great.

I had to turn it up more then any other BR so far. I put in 30 days of night and it blows this sound track away.

Technically, what looks better, 1080i or 720p? Native resolution for my Sony TV is 1080i. I switched the resolutions back and forth and 720p looks somewhat better. It has a smoother feel.

I had to turn it up more then any other BR so far.

Isn't it usually the better the uncompressed audio, the more you have to turn it up due to the expanded range? The louds are louder and the quiets are much more quiet.

whatever's native is better because that's what it's going to pump anyways. if you play 1080i, so will your tv. if you play 720p, your tv will convert it to 1080i and then pump that anyways. don't go through the conversion process if you don't have to.

We've been getting a lot of questions from readers over the last few weeks as to what some of the various studios are working on with regard to Blu-ray Disc, especially now that the format war is officially over. There haven't been all that many new title announcements in the last month or so, and so people are naturally wondering what's up. They're especially wondering when Paramount and Universal will finally show their BD cards.

To be able to give you a better sense of what's going on, I've been making some calls to the various studios and support companies on the subject this week. So here's a bit of what I've learned...

First up, it seems that now that the format war is over, there's a lot of 'making nice' going on in the industry, especially between the studios that had previously been on opposite sides of the format dispute. I'm also told that the BDA and its various members are working to help studios that had previously backed HD-DVD get fully up to speed with regard to Blu-ray authoring and production (in some cases even specifically making room for them in replication lines), and also to ensure that there's enough replication capacity available to meet demand for 3rd and 4th quarter titles.

Each studio is currently busy planning and preparing its BD release slate for the rest of the year. I can tell you that there are a LOT of titles in the works for Blu-ray release later this year, but also that the general sense in the industry is that the floodgates are really going to start opening up in 2009, after the Blu-ray format is able to make its holiday sales pitch to consumers unopposed for the first time. In fact, I've learned that there are some very exciting titles set to debut in the 1st quarter of 2009. Unfortunately, we can't really talk about them right now, as specific titles, schedules and features are shifting around a lot at the moment. While many 2009 releases are already in production, that's still a long ways off in terms of actual release dates.

More immediately, Warner Home Video has already given hints as to its Blu-ray plans in the year ahead, which we've reported on at some length (here and here). Image is working on titles. Genius Products has let it be known that they'll start releasing on the format in the second half of 2008 (including Weinstein Company titles). Disney and Sony are also working on lots of new titles. And I can tell you with confidence that Paramount and Universal have many titles already in the works as well. Part of the problem, particularly for Paramount, is that they're well aware that they've upset many high-def consumers in recent months. There are also, as we've said previously, some remaining contractual and financial issues being resolved with Toshiba as well. The main thing is that both studios want to make a big positive splash with their Blu-ray efforts going forward, and so they're taking their sweet time to frame their plans. Neither studio wants to start announcing titles and dates until they're completely ready to make good.

Meanwhile, what about Fox and MGM? Some of their release plans (through May and June) are already known. However, I'm told that many more catalog titles are in the works for possible release by the end of 2008, including such films as Walk the Line, the classic Batman: The Movie, The French Connection, Super Troopers, Fargo, the X-Men trilogy, the original Planet of the Apes, possibly Young Frankenstein and maybe even MGM musical titles, not to mention the expected new release films. And there are some great 2009 titles already being planned. Note that this information comes directly from studio sources, though the specific title slate and street dates are all fluctuating and are yet to be announced, so you should consider this Rumor Mill-worthy until official announcements are made.

Posted from AVSforums:

I don't know if anyone else has posted similar info but a couple of weeks back I mentioned that I had a god awful blast from my speakers while playing a Blu-ray disk. One of our colleagues put me on the path that the problem may be caused by DTS HD MA tracks. Well, it appears I'm not alone.

Check this thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1008620

This is causing quite a stir. Don't confuse this issue with the speaker pop we've discussed at length. You'll know this when you hear it. Recommended reading for anyone bitstreaming DTS MA.

I asked the same question and this was one response.

For dts 5.1 and dtsES 5.1 i prefer thx cinema with neo:6
For 2.0 tracks i prefer neuralTHX7.1 if it is a game or a movie.

Movie watching day :)

Sunshine - Netflix - Liked the movie overall. Picture was great. I didn't like what they did with the dude from Icarus 1. Camera out of focus isn't a cool effect.

Robocop - Pretty impressed with how old this was. It looked pretty decent. The effects back in the day were horrible :) But it was still cool to watch.

Now me and the kid are watching Ice Age The Meltdown. Gonna either watch Hellboy or ID4 after this one

I have Enchanted on BD for sale. Sold SBrooks1

Thanks! Received it today! Me and the fiance are checking out the D-Files extra right now where they ask you trivia questions while you watch most of the movie. Now THIS is how I expect an extra to be on a Blu-ray disc. Apparently if you answer the question correctly you get to see a behind-the-scenes video all in HD. If you get it wrong, no video. :( Pretty cool though. Thanks again johnnyknoxsvill!! :D

Just finished watching Hitman....what a fantastic movie. I enjoyed every minute of it. I guess action flicks with lots of killing is my thing :)

On another note...Timothy Olyphant was great in this as Agent 47. He was also great in Live Free or Die Hard. I must say he is a talented actor and quickly becoming one of my favorites. Hope to see him do more action movies and hopefully there will be a Hitman 2!
